Ensure safety in ports, terminals for 'Undas'

ith the anticipated in�lux of passengers in the city’s public ports during semestral break and incoming ‘Undas’ (All Saints’ Day), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Davao is now intensifying security measures by conducting pre-departure inspection in the passengers ports of Davao City.

PCG Station Davao Commander Garry Laynesa said the inspection aims to ensure passengers' safety who will depart from Davao City via public ports such as Sta. Ana Wharf and Mae Wess.

While they have ballpark �igure of passengers that will be �locking to the ports, Laynesa said they are expecting a huge number heading off to resorts

and beaches, or go home for the holiday break.

"No exact number pero expected namin na marami dahil undas at sem break. Katulad last year na dagsa ang mga pasahero," Laynesa said.

DOH confirms PRRD to attend ASEAN meetings in Thailand 3rd polio case P T he Department of Health (DOH) on Monday reported the third con�irmed case of polio in the country.

In a statement, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said a fouryear-old female from Datu Piang in Maguindanao tested positive for poliovirus.

According to the DOH, the patient was initially diagnosed with acute �laccid paralysis on September 26 by the Cotabato Regional Medical Center after displaying symptoms like fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle pain.

On October 24, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said the stool samples from the patient tested positive for vaccine-derived poliovirus 2 (VDPV2).

The poliovirus isolated by the institute was genetically linked to the VDPV2 from a patient previously con�irmed to have polio in Lanao del Sur. The recent fatality had not received any

dose of oral polio vaccine, the DOH said.

Meanwhile, samples from another suspected polio case have already been sent to the laboratory for testing.

Duque said the health department will be conducting a massive vaccination campaign in Datu Piang from November 4 to 8 for an estimated 4,254 children between 0 to 59 months.

The DOH, World Health Organization, and United Nations Children's Fund are also set to meet with of�icials of Datu Piang from Monday to Tuesday to discuss the outbreak response.

he Philippine National Police (PNP) is on full alert status effective Monday to secure the country's commemoration of All Saints' and All Souls' days.

“Effective today, I am placing the entire Philippine National Police on full alert to ensure the availability of all personnel and resources for law enforcement and public safety operations ahead of the traditional All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day holiday this coming weekend,” PNP of�icer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa told reporters in a press brie�ing held at Camp Crame.

Under full alert status, all leaves from duty by PNP personnel are cancelled to guarantee a 100-percent presence of personnel to perform police functions.

Gamboa said over 35,000 police personnel from the police regional of�ices and national support

units would perform security and public safety duties this weekend when an estimated 15 million Filipinos are expected to troop to public cemeteries and memorial parks around the country.

He said the police regional of�ices and national support units would mobilize more than 99,000 force multipliers from local government units, civic action groups, civilian volunteer organizations and motoring clubs to man police assistance centers in providing road assistance and public safety services.

Security coverage would be laid out in all 83 airports and domestic air terminals, 333 seaports, 808 inland bus terminals, and 59 train stations in different parts of the country to assist travelers.

DLI Vice President Ricardo “Cary” Lagdameo said the design of the exterior of the building resembles banana and abaca �ibers which, when completed, will look like waves from the distance.

lang parang its just four walls. This is going to be the landmark building of Davao when it is �inished, I hope. When we see tourism ads and see Pearl Farm in those videos, hopefully when they show videos of Davao, they will show our Diamond Tower,” he said.

He added that the design of the building also demonstrate the family’s engagement in agriculture businesses.

“The reason we feel very strong about is is because when we have the

building design, we told our architect that our family is into agriculture so how to translate that into the architecture of the building?

That was my challenged,” he said.

The construction of the Diamond Tower is at light speed and the company is eyeing to top off the building by the end of the year.

Lagdameo said in terms of construction, they are now about 45 percent complete.

“We only started this in December of last year and to date we have about seven �loors already and we are looking to top off the building by end of the year, hopefully,” he said.

angko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno has urged the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) to ensure a positive end of the 12-month observation period for the Mutual Evaluation Report (MER).

In his speech during AMLC’s 18th-anniversary celebration on October 23, the BSP chief, who serves as the concurrent chair of the Council, said Mutual Evaluation measures a country’s level of technical compliance with international anti-money laundering (AML) or counter-terrorism �inancing (CTF) standards.

The ME also gauges the effectiveness of a jurisdiction’s existing AML and CTF. Diokno said AMLC has done a self-evaluation of its AML and CFT based on the current legal framework, operations of competent authorities and statistics.

Results of the self-assessment showed that on effectiveness, AMLC achieved accurate ratings on seven of the 11 Immediate Outcomes (IOs) while it is technically compliant on 34 of the 40 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendations, he said.

The central bank chief said the country is “in the latter stage” of the ME and AMLC must submit a comprehensive progress report to the Asia Paci�ic Group (APG) on Money Laundering regarding its recommended actions.

“This 12-month obser-

vation period gives us an opportunity for the country to remedy identi�ied shortcomings in the MER. As such, I enjoin everyone to work even harder to ensure that the Philippines is able to successfully exit thAMLe 12-month observation period,” he said.

“We cannot afford to have the Philippines in the Financial Action Task Force’s list of high risk and non-cooperative jurisdictions. Hence, we should be very strategic in our focus for the next 12 months. With perseverance, a reinforced Secretariat and a closer link with partner agencies, I am con�ident that we will be able to address the country’s weak AML/CFT areas,” he said.

Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a policy-making body that sets standards and encourages the effective implementation of legal, regulatory, and operational measures against money laundering and terrorist �inancing.

ECONOMY 5 Accredited retailers can now buy NFA rice at lower price – DA sec

he Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that National Food Authority (NFA) rice would now be sold to accredited retailers at a cheaper P23 pesos per kilogram from the previous P25/kilo.

DA Secretary William Dar said retailers could sell the rice at P27 per kilogram, but no higher.

Dar added that the lower price meant higher pro�its for retailers and the NFA could now move its stock faster.

“Ang council ay nag-decide to reduce this price level to retailers from 25 to 23 para mas magaan, mas mabilis ‘yong paglabas ng mga imported rice stocks ng NFA and para may 4 pesos na margin sila at mas mabilis ‘yong pagbenta ng NFA rice,” explained the Agriculture Secretary.

Dar said the move was in line with the NFA’s revised mandate under the Rice Tarif�ication Law. The new NFA rice prices took effect last October 25.

ultinational lender Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Monday committed to help member countries in improving food security and climate resilience and sustainability.

In his speech during the Rural Development and Food Security Forum in Mandaluyong City, ADB president Takehiko Nakao emphasized the need to provide assistance in food security.

“For its part, ADB will proactively assist our developing member countries to increase agricultural productivity and pro�itability, enhance food safety, and improve climate resilience and sustainability,” he said.

“We are committed to supporting our member countries to supply suf�icient, nutritious, safe, and affordable food. People also want higher quality food as their incomes increase,” he added.

The ADB is based in the Philippines, where agricultural production dropped 5.20% to P424.6 billion in the �irst half of the year.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) attributed this to declines in crop production as the

subsector lost 5.70% in output terms.

“The continued inability of farmers to generate a livable income risks rolling back many of the poverty reduction gains we have made in the last four decades,” Nakao said.

“Further, extreme weather conditions caused by climate change, and degraded farmland and water resources are making our task of �inding sustainable solutions even more dif�icult,” he added.

He called on stakeholders to continue their collaboration in ensuring food security across member countries.

“Now with Rural Development and Food Security as one of the seven operational priorities of ADB’s Strategy 2030, we need to deepen and accelerate our knowledge-sharing efforts with key stakeholders around the world,” said Nakao.

AGAYAN DE ORO — Security Bank Corporation (SBC) held the �inal leg of its �irst economic forum roadshow in the gateway of Northern Mindanao and brought together experts who highlighted key areas for sustainable and inclusive development in the region. The symposium also marks the bank’s �ifth and last economic forum for 2019.

Security Bank continues to see promising investment opportunities in Mindanao with the region’s impressive economic growth, which spurred demand for several infrastructure projects and real-estate developments in the area.

“We always keep a close eye on the exciting developments in Mindanao. Since 2016, there has been a gradual increase in GDP share of the region.

Earlier this year, its gross regional domestic product increased by 7.0% from 2018, owed to the accelerated growth of their service and industry sectors.

Graves and garbage turn graveyards into garbage dumps, Thus, it is imperative for local government units (LGUs) to enforce the law on proper solid-waste management during ‘Undas.’

Littering should not be tolerated tat is why apart from the usual reminders on safety and security, the city government must remind the public to properly dispose of their garbage.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estimates some 30,000 tons of garbage generated in the country every day and the volume expectedly shoots up during events and holidays like ‘Undas.’ Too bad, tons of trash are collected each year from public cemeteries and memorial parks during this season.

It’s time to be very conscious about this part of the religious tradition--to not only be safe and secured, but also to be wary of the environnment.

Dabawenyos must be responsible enough to properly dispose of their waste and not leave their graves like a dumpsite. Respect for the dead is not only manifested by one’s presence during ‘Undas’ but in keeping the environs where the dead are laid to rest clean.

It’s a garbage kind of ‘Undas’ season again.

It’s that time of the year when millions of Filipinos troop to cemeteries to pay tribute to their departed loved ones. This long weekend is referred to as ‘Undas’ or All Saints Day in the Philippines.

As the Philippines is the world’s third largest Catholic country, the country celebrates it with a lot of fanfare and tradition. Traditionally, All Saints’ Day marks a Roman Catholic holiday that celebrates saints who were not awarded their own feast days. It also marks a celebration of the lives of the deceased.

But while ‘Undas’ is considered one of the most important dates in the Catholic calendar, it is also a nightmare in terms of security and safety. The massive crowds moving on those days are just too much of work for law enforcers as well as security and safety workers. Hence, people get some reminders here and there during this time just to keep accidents as low as possible.

The other side of the major concern of the observance of ‘Undas’ is trash. The day after ‘Undas’ traditionally is like the day after a big storm. Expect piles of garbage littering around as revellers literally

INSTITUTIONALIZED FAULT-FINDING When the second highest of�icial of the land has nothing better to say than to �ind fault, what can the public expect from her if, just in case, she succeeds the president in an emergency?

VP Leni Robredo has made a hasty conclusive judgment when she declared nothing much concrete was achieved by the Duterte administration in its intensi�ied campaign against illegal drugs traf�icking.

This stance speaks volumes of her oppositionist mindset rather than a re�lection of her of�ice’ critical assessment of the state of affairs in our country that can be considered as a narrow-minded approach to understanding what public service is about.

Fault-�inding seems to have become an attractive career shift among contemporary politicians who are aspiring for higher elective posi-

tions. Without a doubt, it helps catch the public’s attention even for a swift moment.

Piggyback riding is one of the political tools by which ambitious men (as described

by Mark Anthony in his funeral oration for Julius Caesar) utilize as a springboard to either national prominence or notoriety, depending on how the audience absorbs the message, even if it were delivered off tangent (or foolishly as the case may be).

Sad that the Vice-President has not outlived her rural origins as she was – by a stroke of luck – merely catapulted into the national scene as the widow of a late “icon” of public service in the opposition’s desperate search for political expediency.

Handlers of the VP are in a frantic race to capitalize on the small success stemming out of the recent Supreme Court pro-

nouncement on the electoral protest �iled by losing 2016 vice-presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. Robredo’s political operators most probably thought their lady boss could pro�it from the favorable SC decision and gain “pogi” points by capitalizing on it. Little did they realize that the VP’s statement �inding fault with the illegal drugs war was too much of a hasty evaluation and assessment.

I hazard the guess that Robredo is already beginning to enjoy where she is in the political scenario – even as she is just a babe out of the woods – because whether anyone likes it or not, she is next in line – a heartbeat away, idiomatically speaking - for the most coveted elective position of the land.

And if she just plays her cards right, she can impose her

stature over her LP allies without really trying.

Now, if you, dear reader, are a keen political observer, you will realize that the VP is already beginning to take the bumpy road leading to the doorsteps of Malacanang.

At the rate she is attempting at every turn to rip to shreds the accomplishments of the incumbent administration – regardless whether she hits the nail on the head or the nail hits her head (pardon the pun but its intentional) – her political handlers want Robredo to be always in the center of public discussion.

Why? Because ultimately the goal is to catch the public’s eyes and ears as the political fever will now begin to heat up when 2020 beckons. Her handlers want her to be considered a serious contender for the presidency and the sure�ire

way to do that is to get into the “eye of the storm,” so to speak.

Robredo has obviously acquiesced to the strategic political ploy of institutionalized fault �inding because she has been made to believe that without it, she would lose her prominence and clout in the LP hierarchy.

In fact, the VP’s adept political strategists are visibly trying to erase from the public mind her many slip ups and illogical statements in the past to re-build Robredo’s �ighting and bold image as a capable president-in-waiting.

Institutionalized fault-�inding is already a political way of life.

THAT WHICH SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS That statement came the mouth of a would-be photographer and reminded me of the words of Hungarian-born American war photographer Robert Capa: “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”

To most people, photography is just taking pictures of a person, place or thing. But there’s more than that. “Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what it appears to be,” US photographer Duane Michals says.

A picture records history.

“Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again,” French humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson reminds.

Luxembourgish American photographer Edward Steichen is even more explicit. “Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man,” he points out.

Not everyone has so-called photographic memory. That is why photographers have to capture them through their lenses.

“All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget,” English art critic John Berger observes. “In this – as in other

ways – they are the opposite of paintings. Paintings record what the painter remembers.

Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting may change its meaning according to who is looking at it.”

And there are those who are wedding photographers.

“The people who hire me as a wedding photographer hire me not because of my photographic style,” Jared Platt said, “they hire me because of my style of my personality. My style and personality match, so they know they’re getting a genuine style.”

Journalists like me usually bring camera whenever they travel. We believe a picture speaks a thousand words. As Lewis Hine puts it: “If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn’t need to lug around a camera.”

But there are some instances when a journalist forgets to bring his camera (thanks God for mobile phones these days). If that happens to you, don’t worry.

Relax and enjoy. Someone advices, “There will be times when you will be in the �ield without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don’t be bitter because you can’t record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is!”

I learned how to use camera and started taking good pictures after meeting the multi-awarded American photojournalist

Don Rutledge. His photographs appeared in such prestigious publications as Time, Life, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Ebony, Stern in Germany, Paris-Match in France, and other magazines in Canada, Europe, and other parts of Asia. He received over 300 photographic awards from secular and religious organizations.

“My main subject matter involved people, showing them in natural surroundings, lifestyles, and the variety of environments in which they live their lives from work environments to pleasures and relaxations, among others,” Don said during our meeting in 1996.

He came to the Philippines to do photography for an article which The Commission. The subject matter was the 1985 Ramon Magsaysay recipient Harold R. Watson, who happened to be my boss at that time. He had been to over 143 countries!

“I believe it is important to help subjects feel comfortable while photographing them and getting them to carry on their normal activities rather than stopping their activities and then smiling and posing for me to take their pictures,” he answered when I asked him some tips.

“The challenge has always been to search and see beyond what the average person sees,” Don explained. “When we are young, we are �illed with questions about things around us. A child says, ‘Why is that �lower

red and that one yellow? Where does the rain come from?’ And so on. But as we grow into adulthood, we usually stop seeing the details and much of life around us becomes accepted as is and often even mundane. The excitement with photojournalism is that it will not let me do that.

I am forced by that challenge to look beyond what the average person looks and capture that moment in �ilm for viewers to enjoy.”

Hearing those words, I was reminded by the statement of James Lalropui Keivom. “It’s weird that photographers spend years or even a whole lifetime, trying to capture moments that added together, don’t even amount to a couple of hours,” he said.

During our time together, I observed that Don took a lot of pictures on one particular scene or activity. On why he was doing that, he replied, “It is much like a writer or a speaker preparing an article or speech. They write lots of notes from which the message is narrowed and developed into the �inal presentation. I take extra pictures for that same reason.” (With digital cameras now readily available, a photographer won’t have a problem following that tip!)

“In photojournalism,” he said, “there is constant change.

A subject is smiling, frowning, talking, listening, walking, standing, sitting, working, or relaxing.

Often in the background, while

subjects are being photographed in the foreground, people walk in and out of the picture. Making choices as to when to click the shutter is constant and important. The challenge is both dif�icult and exciting. The photojournalist becomes ‘eyes’ for viewers and places those viewers into the position where he stood while making the photograph.”

To those who are just starting photography as a hobby or a career, he offered this tip: “New photographers can �ind excitement in isolating wonderful elements of our world and its people in that view�inder of their camera. That becomes the photographer’s world. Outside that �inder, beyond the moment of clicking the shutter, is of course a world in enormous size and activity but the photographer’s world right then is de�ined in the view�inder and he freezes it to hold history as he clicks the shutter.

He continued, “His activity should be more than just raising the camera, looking through the view�inder and just clicking the shutter. That is a moment of personal history whether it involves special moments of his family or friends, activities of famous and unknown people, or even elements of nature scenes around him.”

“There are no rules for good photographs,” American landscape photographer Ansel Adams stated, “there are only good photographs.”

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo earlier said “spacing” in President’s activities might be implemented in light of his “punishing” schedule in Thailand.

Duterte had scrapes and bruises following a motorcycle accident inside the Presidential Security Group compound within the Malacañang Complex on October 16.

He had to cut short his trip to Japan on October 22, where he attended the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Naruhito, because of an “unbearable pain” in his spinal column which his doctor said was a case of muscular spasm.

The Palace said the President’s doctor had advised him to take some rest and limit his physical activity as world leaders

including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi expressed their concern for Duterte.

Upon returning home, his father broke into TEARS and said, "I am amazed that you did it My child! You're really great! " That night, Jordan slept alongside his father. His father said, "Son, in your experience selling these three pieces of clothing, what did you learn about success?"

Jordan replied, "Where there's a will, there's a way."

His father nodded his head, then shook his head, "What you say is not entirely wrong! But that was not my intention. I just wanted to show you that a piece of used clothing which is worth only a dollar can also be increased in value, Then how about us - living and thinking humans? We may

be darker and poorer, but what if we CAN increase our VALUE." This thought enlightened young Jordan. Even a piece of used clothing could be made digni�ied, then why not me? There is absolutely no reason to underestimate myself.

From then on, Michael Jordan felt that his future would be beautiful and full of hope.

He went on to become the greatest basketball player of all times.

Here's another one.

Like Jordan, it's about another legend in the making in sports--Tiger Woods.

Tiger's father Earl Woods, as the world would �ind out, knew his son better than anyone else. After all, he had been there from the beginning, the very early beginning. After seeing Tiger, not yet a year old, solidly strike his �irst golf shot, in a scene recounted in Tiger by John Strege, Earl ran from his makeshift garage driving range inside the house and shouted to his wife, Kultida, "We have a genius on our hands."

Earl would go on to teach Tiger about personal integrity, focus, commitment and being a good person. Earl was known for praising Tiger for his efforts, not his accomplishments. He was known for making Tiger always �ight, never giving up no matter what the circumstances.

Earl Woods said he made it clear his purpose was "not to raise a golfer. I wanted to raise a good person."

These two stories took me to one afterthought: sons are building blocks of dreams made by fathers.

And then I though of two men I know so well being my kumpadres--the church godfathers of my own son Magnus--Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go and businessman/Presidential Adviser for Sports Glenn Escandor.

Senator Bong, who �inished no. 3 in May's Senatorial race, saw his son Christian Lawrence rise up to place no. 3 in the last Licensure Examinations for Certi�ied Public Accountants, arguably one of the toughest professional exams in the country.

Glenn, who is also nicknamed Bong to his family, saw his son grow from a bungling oversized kid playing in the SBP and passerelle tournaments for Ateneo de Davao University to become a member of the fabled De La Salle University Green Archers basketball team in the UAAP. At 6-3, Francis Gabriel has a lot of future ahead of him in the Green Archers fold.

You can feel the pride oozing from these two who plays basketball together night in and night out before Bong the Senator had busier days attending to the side of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Indeed, fathers will do everything for a son because whatever he becomes will also be his own accomplishment in this world.

And I remember my dad who I lost 18 years ago, he told me: Son, one day you will have a son of your own and you will understand me perfectly.

I do now.

THE quiet, unassuming island of Calicoan came to life today as the competition proper of the 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves started with the Men’s Open Shortboard Division. Visitors from neighbouring towns and cities came in droves—clearly excited about seeing how top surfers from different areas in the Philippines would surf their beloved Calicoan waves.

Today’s outstanding performance came early in Heat 4 of Round 1. Tricky wave conditions produced by onshore winds tested our competitors’ wave-reading ability. Goofyfooter Edwin Uriarte from Pacifico, Siargao Island stood out with a total heat score of 15.00, the highest in Round 1 of the Men’s Open Shortboard Division.

“I made sure I practised every day back home in Pacifico. I was excited about the second leg of the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) because it’s a left-hander!” Uriarte said. This second leg is the first time PSCT is holding a tour with a predominantly left-breaking wave since its first tour in 2017.

Being the first PSCT event ever to be held in the Visayas, this second leg of the national tour had the most number of Visayan surfers competing. “PSCT gladly welcomes all the firsttime competitors, especially our brothers and sisters from the Visayas,” says PSCT president Luke Landrigan.

“I’m sure the judges and especially the locals are in for a treat seeing their best surfers compete,” Landrigan added.

The 64-year-old educator turned farmer-entrepreneur welcomes life lessons through experiences with her home garden in Barangay Angliongto.

She is proud to say that her 50 sqm backyard of greens is producing food for her family.

She is also able to sell homegrown seedlings and crops on the side, making good business every season.

“I want to learn more about how I can do this better,” she said in vernacular. Her passion for gardening also shows her interest to share her knowledge to others, as evident in regular participation in barangay seminars.

The past 12 weeks were not any different for Posadas. She was busy learning and gardening on weekends through a training series by the SM Foundation and its partners.

She is one of the 136 participants of this year’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) - Rural and Urban Farmers Training Program.

The SM Foundation Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) - Rural and Urban Farmers Training Program is a result of collaboration among public and private sectors.

Supermarket tours are part of the intensive program on agriculture, sustainability, and financial literacy This is a project by The SM Foundation Inc., Harbest Agribusiness Corporation and Macondray Philippines, Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, the City Government of Davao, SM Supermalls, SM Markets and BDO Foundation.

The Davao project run took place in the Davao Food Terminal Complex in Toril.

At the core of the program is a vision to empower teachers, small scale farmers, DSWD 4Ps beneficiaries, and senior citizens through building capacity on agro-eco system analyses, financial literacy, and sustainability. All these visualize participants to become successful farmer-entrepreneurs.

Participants are also hands on with farming in urban settings and with engagements

that reinforced values based on Henry Sy Sr.’s 14 life principles.

The three to four month, season-long, technical and hands-on training on high value crops has an average of 100 participants per site. It has developed more than 19,722 small farmers into self-sufficient families, earning their living from the vegetables and the fruits they produce from their lands. Several of them

CEB begins twice daily Cebu-Busuanga flights

T

he Bukidnon Football Association (BUFA) boys needed a superb performance from their reliables in the second half to trounce Davao White team, 4-0, and capture the �irst ever Mindanao Cup at the Tionko �ield on Saturday.

They earned a trip to the Luzon Cup set in Tarlac late next month and PHP30,000 worth of football equipment courtesy of organizer and football patron, Ricky Yanson, of

Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa).

The Wildcats won over the DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DMMACSP) Mariners 82-72, via overtime to pace bracket A with a clean 3-0 winloss card.

Karlo Quidlat struck like thunder as he �inished with 15 points and 8 rebounds in an exceptional effort in the dying seconds of the crucial period to force a �ive-minute extension enroute their third victory.

“It was all about resiliency. Wala dayon mi nisuko tapos tinabangay sa usat usa, mao to resulta,” Quidlat on their mindset when they were down by four points barely less than a minute left in the game.

The SPC-Mandarin best player of the game, however, said they kept their

composure during the overtime and take shots when needed.

UP, ATENEO TITLE CLASH POSSIBLE Ahead of the Final Four – and eventually to the best of 3 Championship series – I offer this narration of how the race to the UAAP throne may look like.

If Ateneo continues to run roughshod over the opposition as it did in the �irst round of the eliminations, it will likely become the First Finalist by completing a sweep also of the second round.

(Unless, UP trips them.)

With this assumption, four squads – UP, FEU, DLSU and UST – are left in the frenzied chase for the last �inals slot, which renders the tournament in a most exciting phase.

But after the Fighting Maroons edged the Archers, 71-68, last Sunday, this corner is convinced that the Diliman platoon

has a more than �ifty percent of sneaking into the title race against the expected �irst �inalist Blue Eagles.

Coach Bo Perasol has slowly but surely succeeded in transforming his boys into the welloiled machine that it is now leading to the Final Four phase where – by securing the second best elimination record – they only need to beat whichever team comes up against UP once to earn a championship berth.

There are just a few kinks that Perasol and his assistants need to focus on to reach that pinnacle.

I think that the edge of playing together the tandem of big boys Bright Akuete and Kobe Paras is not being exploited to the hilt.

Against DLSU, UP allowed the inside incursions of its opponents because it opted to play a man-to-man instead of a zone which should have forced the Archers to shoot from the outside.

Paras likes to play outside and shoot from the perimeter instead of the high post where naturally he will be double teamed.

At high post and when double teamed, it would afford Paras, an excellent passer, to issue an assist pass to an open Maroon sniper for a clear outside trey.

No doubt, Akhuete – as the reigning league MVP, - is a huge rebounder both offensively and defensively. He knows how to score, make follow ups and even attract fouls that may hurt the opposition.

A coach though cannot always rely on outside shooting especially if those are challenged by defenders.

That is why I think that the �irst and second options should be Akhuete and Paras at high post where they are expected to be double teamed.

Paras, a well-trained high jumping US high school standout, handles the ball well and is shiftier than any of them who plays his position.

In trying to make a three-title peat, Ateneo mentor Ted Baldwin considers UP as more of a bigger task – and a real threat as well.

A virtual championship match is being awaited by basketball fans when UP and Ateneo meet for the second time on

the last playing day of the UAAP eliminations.

This duel will - again – determine if the UP defense will work effectively against the reigning titleholders whose strength lies not in only two or three players but in all team members.

Because the championship scenario is focused on the title-retention bid of the Katipunan squad, UP may have to re-design its offensive forays without losing touch of its defensive ploys against the more experienced Blue Eagles.
