ice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte has just made emphasis on the word ‘quota.’

Quota, popularly used in loose Pinoy street speak as the minimum or maximum measure of ful�illment, has been named the operative minimum limit by the youthful presiding of�icer of the Davao City Council to require all councilors to pass at least one ordinance per year.

In a report by the Philippine News Agency posted late Wednesday, Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang bared in an interview with media that Vice Mayor Duterte wanted to see

to it that the councilors are working in their respective committees.

Dayanghirang, who said the vice mayor expressed this sentiment during one of their

executive sessions, added that City Council members are amenable to Baste’s proposal.

“We are obliged to follow it or else it would re�lect that we are not doing our job,” Dayanghirang said.

The veteran councilor said they �ind the vice mayor’s leadership “assertive” and that it was only right as they were primarily elected to formulate local laws.

hile expressing his full support to the reinstatement of death penalty, which is included in the legislative agenda laid out by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde on Thursday said he prefers lethal injection for illegal drug traf�ickers.

Albayalde’s preference is different from that of retired PNP chief and Senator-elect Ronald dela Rosa, who is also pushing for the reinstatement of death penalty for drug traf�ickers.

Albayalde said death penalty should be meted on criminals involved in terrorism, big time drug traf�icking and other heinous crimes related to the use of illegal drugs, such as

the rape of minors.

“That depends on what the law will say. We are civilized people here so probably lethal injection would suf�ice,” he said in a TV interview.

He clari�ied that terrorists who will be found guilty of being directly involved in bloody attacks that claimed lives, as well as their �inanciers, should be punished with death penalty.

“I �irmly believe that the deterrent effect of the certainty of punishment will be a game changer in our continuing campaign against illegal drugs, heinous crimes and corruption, particularly against drug traf�ickers, smugglers and peddlers of illegal drugs,” Albayalde said.

Both Dela Rosa and Albayalde said death penalty is a “good deterrent” against crimes.

Dela Rosa said the method of death penalty, which he wants to be made public, is a good deterrent against drug traf�icking.

“If you want, we can have it through �iring squad in a plaza covered live by media so that the people will be reminded not to be

lured into this activity,” he said in Filipino.

The former PNP chief, however, clari�ied that only big-time drug traf�ickers should be punished with death penalty.

“Not for all crimes. As I have said, small-time drug peddlers, pushers or users won’t be included. My version of death penalty is for drug traf�icking, those who �lood the country with illegal drugs. There should be a ceiling. For example, if you are caught in possession of at least 1 kilo of shabu, you are classi�ied as drug traf�icker. It can be like that,” dela Rosa explained.

rmed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief, Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr., has directed all military units to take the “extra mile” in neutralizing all threat groups in the country.

“As we intensify our efforts against the different threat groups and the support to the different agencies and units of our government, I am directing the commanders at all levels to take the extra mile,” he said during the 2nd Quarter Command Conference held at the Tejeros Hall, AFP Commissioned Of�icers Club, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Wednesday (July 24).

Present were all commanders of the AFP major services, uni�ied commands, AFP-wide service support units, and other major ground units of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

“Our mission accomplishment is directly proportional to the capacity and

capability of our personnel and units to execute their mission. At the end of the day, it is our leadership that matters,” Madrigal stressed.

The meeting covered signi�icant accomplishments in defeating communist and local terrorist groups. It also assessed ongoing security campaigns targeted at ending all threat groups as well as the AFP’s peace building activities.

Barely �ive months before the year ends, the AFP chief said the military has achieved a lot in bringing the communist terrorist groups (CTGs) to its breaking point. However, he said there is still more work to do.

Since the start of the year to July 24, the AFP has already neutralized 6,028 communist terrorists including supporters.

Of which, 95 regular New People’s Army (NPA) members were killed in encounters, 145 were appre-

“But if evidence proves that she is deeply involved in drug traf�icking, then we will let the law take its course,” he added.

Reports showed that the Sabah police arrested the 32-year-old Filipina at around midnight on Tuesday (July 23).

She will be held until July 29 pending investigation and may face a possible death sentence.

At least 48 Filipinos are on death row in Malaysia, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

recent survey, which gave the Cabinet of President Rodrigo Duterte a “very good” net satisfaction rating, is proof that Filipinos are starting to experience a “working government” that delivers their needs, Malacañang said on Thursday.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo welcomed the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, conducted from June 22 to 26, which showed that the Duterte Cabinet’s net satisfaction rating rose from "good" at +44 in March to "very good" in June of this year with a new record-high of +51.

Panelo described the result as “remarkable”, noting that it is the �irst time that a Cabinet received a "very good" rating in recent memory.

“To the Cabinet members, this survey is important as it is demonstrative of the sentiment of the Filipi-

no people, indicating that they are starting to experience a working government that addresses their welfare,” Panelo said in a statement.

Panelo attributed the survey result to the members of the Cabinet’s and their staff’s hard work and dedications to ful�ill the President’s directives.

He, meanwhile, reminded them to use the survey result as motivation to work harder to ful�ill the President’s promise of providing Filipinos with more comfortable lives.

In the latest Global Innovation Index (GII) report, the Philippines rose to number 54 in ranking, up nineteen notches from its previous ranking of 73 in 2018 and 2017. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia on Tuesday, however, said the country is expected to advance to upper middle income status by 2020. The Philippines is ranked only two notches below India, ranked 52nd, a vastly more populous country which

also happens to be its main competitor in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) race. By comparison the three nations with the highest GII rankings in 2019 are Switzerland, Sweden and the United States, scoring 67.24, 63.65 and 61.73 respectively. Nigeria, Togo and Yemen have the distinction of having the lowest GII score in 2019, ranking 127, 128 and 129 respectively. The GII is an annually published ranking of a country's capacity for, as well as its successes in innovation, according to a formula worked out by its publishers. Dominguez said there are existing offices that focus on these subjects such as the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) for water. He, thus, cited that “when they say a new depart-

ment they just want a brighter focus on it.” “(It) doesn’t necessarily mean a very big expenditure because a lot of the units are existing so it will probably be, I don’t know, maybe 10 percent more for the organization of the secretaries’ office or what. So essentially the units are already existing,” he said. Reviving the death penalty

Now that President Rodrigo Duterte has openly stated he wants the restoration of the capital punishment of death to select heinous crimes like drug traf�icking, the question now goes back whether or not death penalty is a real deterrent?

The Duterte government and its law enforcement agencies, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), all agree the country needs to restore the death penalty in order to deter the illegal drugs trade before it gets out of control. The President statement of this hot topic in his fourth SONA revived the debate on the deterrent effect of death penalty to heinous crimes.

The website deathpenalty.org de�ined deterrence as “probably the most commonly expressed rationale for the death penalty.” It contends that “the essence of the theory is that the threat of being executed in the future will be suf�icient to cause a signi�icant number of people to refrain from committing a heinous crime they had otherwise planned.

Deterrence is not principally concerned with the prevention of further killing by an already convicted death-penalty defendant. That falls under the topic of incapacitation.”

This brings us to the critical question of whether potential criminals will be dissuaded from engaging in drug traf�icking or killing because they would face the death penalty rather than no punishment at all. Other

punishments such as life without parole might provide equal deterrence at far less costs and without the attendant risk of executing an innocent person.

Whether the death penalty is a proven method of lowering the rate for the crimes attached to it will depend on many factors.

To rely on comparisons with other jurisdictions is not a dependable yardstick. There have been contentions from anti-death penalty advocates that the capital punishment did not work to deter crimes in other countries. That kind of mindset is ill-placed as there would be no reliable comparisons from the Philippines’ situation with that of other jurisdictions given that there are social factors like poverty and unemployment which is very much related to the illegal drugs trade in the country. For example, lower unemployment rates correlate with lower crime rates, and vice versa.

It is also important to note that the death penalty proposal will apply to select heinous crimes and this early, the suggestions include but not limited to terrorism, big time drug traf�icking and other heinous crimes related to the use of illegal drugs, such as the rape of minors.

And then there is also the factor of strengthening the justice system.

The death penalty issue will heavily require studies and discussions.

It is as critical as it is likewise urgent.

TAXATIONS PURPOSE AND WHY POGOS NEED TO BE TAXED PROPERLY It has often been said since Biblical times that we should render unto Ceasar what is due ceasar and render unto God what is due to God. This is often related with the issue of taxation , as many Jews at that time resisted the thought of paying taxes to the occupying state that was Rome Likewise oft repeated is the adage that the two constants in life are death and taxes.

That said, taxes are a part of life.

Apart from generating revenue for government operations, taxation is a way of regulating or encouraging or discouraging behavior, particularly economic activity that drives investment and income.

When we tax things that are deemed unhealthy or destructive, such as alcohol, cigarettes and sugary drinks people smoke and drink less, thereby increasing wellness and reducing government expenditure for treatment especially of vulnerable sectors.

The question of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations POGOS is thus an interesting one.

These companies, staffed mainly by Chinese speaking expats from of�ices in the Philippines, run online gambling operations patronized by many Chinese based on the mainland.

They have been controversial for buying large amounts of Manila condominium units, crowding locals out.

lower taxes on pogos may only encourage gambling rather than diminish it,and generate more livelihoods for foreigners and not Filipinos. Its net bene�it is simply generating revenue without much real wealth.

On another level, should we tax foreigners at them at the same level at which our countrymen are taxed? In all instances they need to pay the same taxes locals do. Only then can we have a truly level playing �ield for them and ourselves.

TIME MANAGEMENT Time is one of the most valuable things in the world. It is so invaluable that losing it is not like simply losing money or material possessions because losing time is losing something that could not be taken back or will be very hard to make up for.

IGNORED BLESSING Prophet Muhammad said, “Two blessings have been ignored by most people; health and vacant time.” Reported by Imam Al Bukhari.

Humans have a natural inclination to think that Allah’s blessings are only appreciable and quanti�iable via material objects but the Prophet has declared otherwise, that health and free time are blessings too. They are both blessings unlike any other because unlike money or material possessions that we may spend or lose and simply earn back by working, health and time that are wasted are gone forever.

So how do people abandon the blessing of time? It is by misusing it.

It is by spending it on unproductive things or even sinful things.

YOU WILL BE ASKED IN JUDGEMENT DAY ABOUT IT Time is not only valuable as a commodity that is non-returnable once

consumed. Time is very valuable because Allah will ask us about it and about what we did in those times. Prophet Muhammad said, “Allah will not let the son of Adam pass on Judgement day until he is asked about �ive things: how he lived his life, and how he utilized his youth, with what means did he earn his wealth, how did he spend his wealth, and what did he do with his knowledge.” Reported by Imam At Tirmidhi Imagine being asked by your parent on where you spent the money they gave you. They gave you that money so that you could spend it on something bene�icial or on something that they have already told you to spend it with. The same way, Allah shall be asking each one of us on where he or she spent his time during his whole lifetime.

Imagine how Allah shall be asking us on what we spent our time with. The time that He has given us in order for us to worship Him and do good deeds. Imagine what would it be like if He had known that we spent it disobeying him and doing sinful actions.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE Prophet Muhammad said,

This saying of Prophet Muhammad is an epitome of Islam’s emphasis on a Muslim’s full appreciation of Allah’s blessings by being thankful and by utilizing it fully in serving Allah. All these �ive different things are all related to how we manage our time. We may look at time in small chunks of hours, days, weeks, or months but ultimately, these chunks of time when added up together will take a considerably great amount of time that we could have wasted or spent productively.

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TIME Plan your day according to Salah or prayer time: For any Muslim, this could be the most valuable time management advice. To prioritize worshipping Allah gives us a sense of purpose and not feel burdened by it. You’d even �ind some Muslims tell time by mentioning the Salah �irst before telling the exact time. For example, one may say, ‘Let’s meet after Dhuhr (noon

prayer), one o’clock.’ This way, your life revolves around remembering Allah and obeying Him. Stay away from time wasters: It is normal for people to spend some time in recreation. In fact, our modern society has declared that the 24-hour cycle of humans should be divided into three, 8 hours for work, 8 hours for sleep and 8 hours for recreation.

Recreation is done differently by most people. Most of us would be spending it with family while others may be spending it drinking liquor and doing other vices. Time wasters are very dangerous because many of us don’t realize that when we spend time on things that we love and feel joy in doing. Today, social media take much of any one’s time. One may simply be scrolling down until he forgets time and when he checks again, 30 minutes have already passed. This is bad for us especially if it is time that we should be spending working or studying. TV, radio and internet sur�ing also pose the same problem. Shopping, too much socializing and useless travel are also time wasters.

Always remember Allah: Reciting Adhkar or remembrances of Allah always keep us from deviating into time wasting.

By always asking Allah for forgiveness or glorifying and praising Him and by reading the Quran or listening to it, we remember very well our �inite existence and the time that was given to us by Him which we should be spending on worshipping Him and doing good.

Learn to ignore, say no and politely walk away: Humans are social creatures. In fa,ct, it is enjoined upon Muslims to come whenever he is invited by his brethren to a meal. This meal may mean lunch, dinner or just coffee which may lead to long conversations especially when much gossip or jokes are involved. It is a fellow Muslim’s right that we answer his invitation but sometimes there are people who will simply waste your time and may even lead you to sin. Learn to say no by being honest that you really have something more important to do.

Prioritize: In Islam,, we have to learn that everything in this world is �inite and is bound to have an end, whether it is money, time and our lives as a whole. That is why we have to learn to spend it wisely and never waste it.

We have to learn to prioritize - on what to spend our time with and what not to spend it with.

t’s more than oil. It’s even more than gold.

It’s water!

“Water, not oil, is the most precious �luid in our lives, the substance from which all life on the earth has sprung and continues to depend,” wrote Maryann Bird in a Time article.

“Water is worth more than gold and necessary for survival above all other resources on earth,” said a feature published

by South Review, an independent international magazine aimed at presenting the perspectives of Third World countries.

If the world runs out of oil and other fossil fuels, it can always use alternative energy sources. People can live without the precious gold. But without water, the world is doomed.

In theory, some 34,000 cubic kilometers of freshwater are available globally for human use every year. “This amount would be enough to meet human needs, if freshwater were evenly distributed,” observed Donald Hinrichsen, an award-winning American journalist who writes for various United Nations publications. “But available freshwater supplies are not distributed evenly around the globe, throughout the seasons, or from year to year.”

This is the reason why some countries are undergoing water crisis in some parts of the year. Just recently, some Filipinos – particularly those living in Bansalan, a �irst-class municipality in Davao del Sur – are already experiencing what it feels without clean, drinkable water. To think, the country is surrounded by bodies of water.

In the 1950s, the Philippines had as much as 9,600 cubic meters of clean water per person, according to Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero III, an academician with the National Academy of Science and Technology. Four decades later, Filipinos must make do with little more than a third for that volume – 3,300 cubic meters per person.

“Everyone agrees water is basic for life,” wrote Juan Mercado in his column. “When cisterns go dry, disease and death rates surge. That ushers in economic decay – and political instability. Water riots can

be ugly. And no one has yet invented a substitute for water.”

The Philippines is not yet what hydrologists call a “water stressed” nation. That label applies to a country whose annual water supplies drop below 1,700 cubic meters per person.

When supplies drop below 1,000 cubic meters per person per year, the country faces water scarcity for all or part of the year. These concepts were developed by Swedish hydrologist Malin Falkenmark to gauge current and future water needs and to measure scarcity.

While the country is still not “water stressed,” it has already areas suffering from water scarcity. Four river basins – Pampanga, Agno, Pasig-Laguna, and the island of Cebu – are experiencing water scarcity from time to time.

During summer months, many residents of Metro Manila – home to more than 10 million people – are coping with a “water supply crisis.”

Metro Cebu in the Visayas and Davao City in Mindanao are already experiencing the same status.

The three major cities – along with six others (Angeles, Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo and Zamboanga) – were identi�ied by a study done

by Japan International Cooperation Agency in 1991 to be “water-critical areas.”

Four years ago, the Washington, D.C.-based World Resources Institute (WRI) predicts the Philippines will experience a “high” degree of water shortage by 2040. WRI de�ines water stress as “the ratio between total water withdrawals and available renewable surface water at a sub-catchment level.” A total score of 3 out of 5 was an indication that the country has “high” level of water stress.

“We cannot talk of providing sustainable water to people unless we protect the sources of the commodity – the water-

sheds,” said Elisea Gozon when she was still the head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The country’s water is supplied by rainfall as well as rivers, lakes, springs, and groundwater. With changing water patterns worldwide due to climate change, rainfall is getting scarcer. The little that comes from the heavens is collected, or wasted, in watersheds with balding forests.

A report from the environment department said that 90% of 99 watershed areas in the country are “hydrologically critical” due to their

d e graded physical condition. Massive destruction of the once-productive forested watersheds by illegal loggers and uncontrolled land use from mining, overgrazing, agricultural expansion, and industrialization have contributed to water depletion.

“Land use and vegetative cover in the watershed are very important because they affect water �low and water quality,” Patrick Durst told this author when he was the regional forestry of�icer of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

River pollution also contributes to the country’s current water woes. A report released by the Asian Development Bank some years back counted 16 rivers which were “biologically dead” during the

dry months. Some 48% of water pollution came from domestic waste, 37% from agricultural waste, and the remaining 15% from industrial waste.

There is more bad news.

Water levels in the country’s major sources have been dropping at the rate of 50% over the past two decades. Excessive pumping of groundwater has caused water depletion and consequent decline in water levels.

“Water isn’t just a commodity. It is a source of life,” says Sandra Postel, director of the Massachusetts-based Global Water Policy Project.

The New York Times reported that more than half of all accessible water on the planet has been diverted for the use of one species of the millions on the planet – human beings.

Worldwatch Institute, based in Washington, D.C., said that ideally, a person should have at least 50 liters of water each day to meet basic needs – for drinking, food preparation, cooking and cleaning up, washing and personal hygiene, laundry and house cleaning.

Water, after all, is fundamental for life and health. “The human right to water is indispensable for leading a healthy life in human dignity,” the UN Committee on Economic, Cultural and Social Rights pointed out. “It is a pre-requisite to the realization of all other human rights.”

Water is life, so they say. As Dr. Willie T. Ong pointed out in his book, How to Live Longer: Practical Health Tips from a Heart Doctor: “No water, no life. Our bodies are made up of mostly water. Just look at these facts: The brain contains 74% water, blood contains 83% water, lean muscle has 75% and bone has 22% water.”

Water – composed of two atoms of hydrogen and a single atom of oxygen – covers more than two-thirds of the earth's surface. But only 2.5% of that water is fresh water. And 99.7% of that fresh water is unavailable, trapped in glaciers, ice sheets, and mountainous areas. This means that about 0.3% of the planet’s fresh water is shared by its entire people.

“Every year, the rain falling on Earth’s surface amounts to about 110,000 cubic kilometers,” wrote David Molden, Charlotte de Fraiture, and Frank Rijsberman, in their paper, Water Scarcity: The Food Factor. “About 40,000 cubic kilometers contribute to rivers and groundwater. The remainder evaporates directly from soil.”

But human beings don’t use water ef�iciently. “We dam rivers, pump groundwater and siphon lakes and rivers to grow our food, quench our thirst, spur our industry,” wrote Jerome Casagrande, director of the Environmental Innovations Initiative at Ashoka. “We use our rivers, lakes and oceans

intentionally and unintentionally as dumping grounds for our waste.”

Worldwide hunger problems are actually water problems. “Over the coming decades, feeding a growing global population and ensuring food and nutrition security for all will depend on increasing food production. This, in turn, means ensuring the sustainable use of our most critical �inite source – water,” said Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary General.

Agriculture is by far the biggest consumer of water around the world. Take rice, for instance. In his book, Water: The International Crisis, author Robin Clark reports that an average farmer needs 5,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of rice.

Producing food from livestock – particularly meat and milk – also entails the use of water. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that one pound of pork needs at least 1,630 gallons of water to produce while one pound of beef requires 5,214 gallons of water.

“As water is increasingly diverted from agriculture to higher-return economic uses (such as booming industry and tourism), food supply will dwindle and go only to those who can pay for it,” Casagrande observed.

But even if there is enough food to eat, people may still be slowly dying from another form of hunger called “invisible hunger” and it comes from drinking unsafe water. Statistics showed one in �ive people around the world lack access to safe drinking water.

The notion that water can carry disease �irst occurred to the ancient Greeks. The physician Hippocrates, the ancient innovator of medical ethics, advised that polluted water be boiled or �iltered before being consumed.

“The number of people that die every year from water-related diseases is the equivalent of 20 jumbo jets crashing every day, mostly full of children,” said Stephen Turner from WaterAid, an international British charity.

Installing a �lush toilet in the home increases a newborn child’s chances of celebrating a �irst birthday by 59%, studies show. In the Philippines, out of

every 1,000 children, 27 never make it to their �irst birthday.

“It is chilling fact that a child dies every 15 seconds from water-related diseases and by 2025 two out of every three people will be living with water shortages,” deplored Joanne Greene from Tearfund, another British charity.

Today’s “crisis in water and sanitation is – above all – a crisis of the poor,” observed the United Nations Development Program study, “Beyond Scarcity: Power, Poverty and the Water Crisis.”

Scientists, water professionals, environmental campaigners and others have urged to solve the problem before it’s too late. “The world has got a very big water problem,” says Sir Crispin Tickell, one of the organizers of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. “It will be the progenitor of more wars than oil.”

Falkenmark has likewise admonished: “We have to stop living as if we had unlimited water supplies and start recognizing that we must deal with serious water constraints.”

In Falkenmark’s view, the relevant question to ask about water is not how much water do we need and from where do we get it, but rather how much water there is and how can we best bene�it from it.

Meanwhile, Postel believes water problems will be right there with climate change as a threat to the human future. In an International Council for Science survey of environmental experts in more than 50 countries, freshwater scarcity ranked second to climate change as a 21st century issue.

“Although the two are related, water has no substitutes,” Dr. Postel says. “We can transition away from coal and oil to solar, wind and other renewable energy sources. But there is no transitioning away from water to something else.”

And that’s a fact, indeed.

“Water, water, everywhere, and all the boards did shrink.

Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink,” wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1798’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. How true, indeed. But on second thought, in Exodus 23:25, it said, “Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water.”

n the home page of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s homepage is a striking image of a beaming young golfer holding yet another trophy.

If she looks familiar, that’s because for the third straight week, fourth in all since relocating in Canada from Australia, Dabawenya golf phenom Ella Nagayo has won her division in the tough junior golf event in Ontario.

The 15-year-old Nagayo, daughter of former Davao City councilor and now labor attache in Canada Rachel Zozobrado-Nagayo, topped the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour MJT Ontario GTA College Preview Girls 15-18 Division held July 22-23 at the Piper’s Heath Golf Club in Hornby, Ontario.

after coming off a threeyear golf scholarship in Melbourne, the girl monikered by Edge Davao as “Swingderella” for her fairy tale run overseas, shot 77 and 71 (148). The MJT Tour website described her game as “really started to �ind her groove” as she has gone three for three in her �irst three tournaments on the junior tour.

“I think the highlight of the tournament was meeting and competing with new MJT people,” said Nagayo. “I really like how [MJT] handles the tournaments and it feels great to win three straight events.”

Coming in second place in the division was Oakville’s Maya Cote, 16, who carded scores of 80 and 77 (157).

The event lured a talented �ield of junior golfers competing for titles in

seven divisions as well as for selection to Team East in the 2019 MJT National Team Challenge presented

by Freedom 55 Financial at Royal Niagara Golf Club in Niagara Falls later this summer.

The MJT U15 Girls title was captured by 13-yearold, Tara O’Connor who �ired rounds of 79 and 76 (155). “I was really happy with the way I played on the �inal day being under all that pressure,” remarked O’Connor, who secured her �irst career MJT title. “I dropped a �ive-foot putt on the 11th hole on the �irst day and that got me con�ident in my game.” After her victory at the MJT TaylorMade Junior Championship at Lionhead Golf Club one week ago, Jamie Roslyn Camero, 13, of Dubai, UAE, picked up a runner-up �inish this week at Piper’s

Heath Golf Club with scores of 78 and 83 (161).

Jeremiah Walker, 12, shot rounds of 77 and 72 (149) to win the MJT Peewee Boys Division in convincing fashion. Playing in his �irst junior tour event of the 2019 season, Walker made �ive birdies throughout the tournament and capped off his performance with an eagle on the 18th hole of the second day.

Jager Pain, 11, �ired rounds of 83 and 74 (157) to �inish in second place.

An exciting contest took place in the MJT Bantam Boys Division between 14-year-old, Andreas Diogenous and 14-year-old, Rhys LePoidevin-Jolly. With both players tied after the �irst day, Diogenous (77, 73 - 150) got off to an even-par front nine start on the second and took it home from there. “I feel great about

winning my division,” commented Diogenous. “The golf course was in great shape both days and it was a fun tournament.” LePoidevin-Jolly �ired a 77 and 73 (154) to �inish second, four shots behind.

Grabbing a three-shot victory in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division was Garvey Knapp, 15. Knapp, who shot 76 and 78 (154), got off to a one-under par start on the front nine of his �irst round, and kept it going all the way to the end. “I was happy with the way I started with those three birdies,” said Knapp. “Especially after making bogey on the �irst hole, I needed those.”

The event’s Collegiate division was won by Oakville’s Rogan Doyle, 19, with scores of 84 and 78 (162). After a dif�icult start to the �irst round, Doyle capped off his �irst day with an impressive back nine making three birdies and shooting even par, beating out Ryan Sherwood, 19 for the title.
