Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio starts a fresh three-year term as the city’s chief executive, her second consecutive tour of duty that began in 2016. Also of�icially kicking off their term of of�ice are two other presidential children

-- Paolo (Pulong), who will serve the next three years as representative of the �irst congressional district; and Sebastian (Baste), who will serve as vice mayor.

Unlike Sara and Pulong, Baste is in his �irst season in public of�ice.

Also serving fresh terms are congressional returnees Vincent Garcia in the second district and Isidro Ungab in the third district.

The 19th City Council will also have a mix of old and new faces.

The Philippines, which won after the Permanent Arbitration Court ruled against China’s invisible demarcation in the disputed waters, temporarily shelved the ruling as it engaged and strengthened ties with Beijing.

residential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo believes a bid to oust President Rodrigo R. Duterte is unlikely to prosper in Congress as impeachment is a numbers game.

ustice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Friday said President Rodrigo Duterte only wants the best interest of the country in refusing to give in to critics’ calls for hostile action against China following the June 9 incident involving 22 Filipino �ishermen at the Recto Bank in the West Philippine Sea. Speaking to newsmen, Guevarra said while “anyone is free to �ile an impeachment complaint against the President,” as aired by opposition �igures, this measure is not a purely legal proceeding.

“But remember that unlike an ordinary action in court, impeachment is not a strictly legal proceeding. It involves a whole gamut of political-economic and other

considerations,” Guevarra said.

“In the end the question is, did the president act against the general interest of the entire Filipino nation?,” he added.

Criticism of Chinese presence in the country’s economic zone arose after a Chinese vessel, identi�ied as the Yuemaubenyu 42212 from Guangdong province in some accounts, reportedly hit a wood-hulled Filipino registered private �ishing boat, the F/B Gem Ver last June 9.

PCOO clarifies non-liquidation of 'Yolanda' fund for employees

T

he Presidential Communications Operations Of�ice (PCOO) on Friday clari�ied the disbursement of funds for employees affected by the onslaught of typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) in 2013 after the Commission on Audit (COA) �lagged the fund's non-liquidation.

It said some 20 employees from attached agencies under the PCOO, who were victims of the typhoon and the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the Visayas in 2013, were given �inancial assistance in 2015 amounting to PHP1.3 million, broken down into two equal tranches, by the Of�ice of the President (OP).

The OP transferred the �irst tranche of PHP685,000 to the PCOO, which in turn distributed the funds to the bene�iciaries.

"It was only through the efforts of COA that the PCOO under the current administration was made aware of the shortcomings of the previous administration to liquidate the �irst tranche and distribute the second tranche, brought by the administration transition and lack of turn over," the PCOO said in a statement.

With regard to the non-liquidation of the �irst tranche, the PCOO, under the current administration, said it has already submitted the liquidation in the �irst quarter of 2019.

On the non-release of �inancial assistance to one bene�iciary, it reported that the previous administration found out that two of the bene�iciaries are a married couple and share one household.

The PCOO said it cannot distribute �inancial assistance to both who share one household, as this would be tantamount to double compensation, which is contrary to law.

"With regard to the second tranche, the PCOO has received it from OP within (the second quarter of) 2019, after submitting the liquidation of the �irst tranche," the PCOO said.

"The PCOO has already commenced the distribution of the second tranche last March 21, 2019.”

The agency assured it remains steadfast in improving and upholding accountability, public service, and governance.

"It also continues to ensure that graft and corruption will not have a place in this administration," it said.

NCRPO starts security preps for PRRD’s 4th SONA

T

he National Capital Region Police Of�ice (NCRPO) has begun preparations aimed at maintaining peace and order in the upcoming fourth State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo R. Duterte on July 22.

NCRPO director, Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said he will directly supervise the security preparations and operations in Metro Manila.

He directed all his police district directors to strengthen anti-criminality measures and police visibility operations all over the NCR, particularly during the SONA. Eleazar said he would sit down with leaders of anti- and pro-Duterte forces next month for them to determine the places they would occupy during the SONA. "We wanted to hear what the two forces wanted for us at the NCRPO command staff to discuss how to secure them.

We don't want them to be in the same places as what they are preaching or shouting might ignite trouble," the Metro Manila top cop told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

According to Eleazar, the NCRPO has a prepared template for the security of the event but they wanted to talk to all stakeholders so the SONA would be peaceful and orderly.

"We are prepared for all scenarios. However, we cannot attain our goal of a peaceful SONA if we fail to address the concerns of the pro- and anti-Duterte forces," he added.

Eleazar said the dialogue aims to establish coordination, cooperation, and understanding between the police, stakeholders, community leaders, and cause-oriented groups on self-policing, no-permit no-rally policy, traf�ic rerouting, and other public services.

He, however, warned that the police would not hesitate to use force if the protesters become unruly.

“As usual, our police will exercise maximum tolerance but at the same time we asked the militant groups to do their share and police their ranks to ensure a peaceful and orderly SONA day,” he added.

Eleazar said demonstrators will not be prevented from holding rallies “for as long as these are held peacefully.”

He noted that policemen will not be armed with shields and truncheons as an act of goodwill while shipping containers and barbed wires will not be laid out just like they did for the past three years along Batasan Road and Commonwealth Ave. “I am expecting na itong SONA na darating ay wala rin tayo ilalagay.

With the plans to improve the old market site, it was high time for the City Government to build a modern economic enterprise with facilities relevant to the needs and comfort of the panaboans.

Thus, the proposal was submitted to the PPP Center in Manila for review.

On an information material released by the PPP Center, it shows that the project involves �inancing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the new Panabo Town Center.

The project aims to develop a modern, aesthetic, well-built, clean, convenient, energy ef�icient, climate change resilient, and culturally adaptive commercial town center with integrated commercial retail space components.

The PPP Center provides technical assistance to national government agencies (NGAs), government-owned-and controlled corporations (GOCCs), government �inancial institutions (GFIs), state universities and colleges (SUCs), and local government units (LGUs) as well as to the private sector to help develop and implement critical infrastructure and other development projects.

Panabo Town Center project nears approval

anabo City is close to having its �irst modern market complex at the Central Business District (Poblacion). The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Center in Manila recently posted that the project for Panabo is included in their Pipeline of Projects as of 2019 and now on its Approval Stage. The proposed Panabo Town Center Project, which will be established speci�ically at the open area where the former Century Bank stands, is the �irst PPP Project for the City Government of Panabo through the initiative of incumbent City Mayor James G Gamao.

Jollibee expands presence in Vietnam

omegrown fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC) is expanding its footprint in Vietnam as it plans to put up 20 to 30 new stores a year.

“We look at the population of Vietnam which is close to 95 million, about the same in the Philippines and still fast-growing market so there is a lot of opportunities,” JFC Chief Executive Of�icer Ernesto Tanmantiong told reporters after the company’s stockholders’ meeting on Friday.

JFC Chairman Tony Tan Caktiong is optimistic that Vietnam can replicate the Philippine market.

EDITORIAL Public trust The country’s 18,081 elective of�icials from the May 13 elections begin their term of public service which will run for three years, except for the 12 new Senators who will serve for six years.

It is important for these elected of�icials to understand what their oath means in regards to the public of�ice they hold. Our jurisdiction teaches us that a public of�ice is a public trust. Hence, it is a responsibility handed down by virtue of trust and con�idence of the public to the person holding such position. Public of�ice is de�ined as a position or occupation established by law or by the act of a government body, for the purpose of exercising the authority of the government in the service of the public.

However, no matter how clear that de�inition is, there are still many who have betrayed that trust and served for self interest.

The constitutional description of public of�ice is a public trust where public of�icers and employees commonly known as civil servants and public of�icials must be upheld and respected at all times. Public of�icials are accountable to the people, whom they should serve with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty and ef�iciency. Signi�icantly, they are also expected to act with patriotism as well as lead a role of living modest lives.

At present, issues in corruption continue to affect the government. Several reasons of these issues still exist because of the deeply rooted problems like

nepotism, cronyism, political patronage as well as lack of transparency and accountability. The unsystematic enforcement of law and institutional mechanisms for holding civil servants and public of�icials accountable of their actions will always lead to a negative impression to the constituents.

The principle of public trust is not a new principle. It goes back to Plato.

About 100 years ago, that proposition that “public of�ice is a public trust” was regularly used in public discussion of government and parliamentarians’ actions.

It is not a metaphor: it is a fundamental ethical principle.

Giving priority to the public interest means transparency and accountability.

This may sound simple but many politicians �ind it hard to do as it requires moral courage. Elected of�icials inevitably have to deal with a con�lict of interest arising from their obligation to give priority to the public interest over their personal and political interests. This is an area of policy that affects how all other policy areas are addressed.

Public trust is critical to the operation of our democracy. If wilfully observed, it would also result in better government, reduce opportunities for corruption and signi�icantly help economic growth.

As Victor Hugo said: “All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”

It is time for politicians to put public trust �irst above their own interests.

FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY “Money is power, freedom, a cushion, the root of all evil, the sum of blessings.” – Carl Sandburg *** A messenger came from a learned society to invite Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz, a Swiss-American biologist and geologist recognized as an innovative and prodigious scholar of Earth’s natural history, to address its members. Agassiz refused on the grounds the lectures of this kind took up too much time that he should be devoting to research and writing.

The messenger persisted, saying that they were prepared to pay handsomely for the talk.

“That’s no inducement to me at all,” Agassiz replied. “I can’t afford to waste my time making money.”

That brings us to the subject of money. “As much money and life as you could want!” J.K. Rowling wrote in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “The two things most human beings would choose above all – the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them.”

American poet and satirist Dorothy Parker also said: “If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.” And what did US actor Will Rogers say?

“Too many people,” he pointed

out, “spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.”

Money, as Wikipedia de�ines it, “is any item or veri�iable record that is generally accepted as payment for good and services and repayment of debts, such as taxes, in a particular country or socio-economic context.”

There are four functions of money: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value and sometimes, a standard of deferred payment. Any item or veri�iable record that ful�ills these four functions can be considered as money.

“Money is historically an emergent market phenomenon establishing a commodity money, but nearly all contemporary money systems are based on �iat money,” Wikipedia explains. “Fiat money, like any check or note of debt, is without use value as a physical commodity, It derives its value by being declared by a government to be legal tender; that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment within the boundaries of the country, for ‘all debts, public and private.’”

The word “money” is believed to have originated from the temple of Juno, on Capitoline, one of Rome’s seven hills. “In the ancient world, Juno was often associated with money,” Wikipedia claims. “The

temple of Juno Moneta at Rome was the place where the mint of ancient Rome was located.”

The name “Juno” may derive from the Etruscan goddess Uni (which means “the one,” “unique,” “unit,” “union”, “united”) and “Moneta” either from the Latin word, “monere” (remind, warn, or instruct) or the Greek word “moneres” (alone, unique).

Money comes in different forms and different stages.

Workers earn it while spendthrifts burn it. Bankers lend it. Women spend it. Forgers fake it. Taxes take it. Dying leave it as heirs receive it. Thrifty saves it and misers crave it. Rich increase it while gamblers lose it.

Matthew J. Ritchie shares this story: There were some Mexican Indians on their way to market with pottery. Some wealthy tourists stopped them on the way and offered to buy their entire stock for a good price.

The Indians refused and explained, “Señora, in my town no one can read and write; there is no electricity, so there can be no radios. Some must go to the city every week to get the news of the world, and without pottery we cannot get a place in the market to sell. So, we cannot sell you all the pottery jars, for they are a means to our end.

Señora, we would be disgraced if we should return home with-

out nothing but money.”

Money isn’t everything. It’s not how you spend your money but how you use it. I was reminded of the words of Frank C. Clark. “Many folks think they aren’t good at earning money,” he said, “when what they don’t know is how to use it.”

When they have money, some people spend it all as if there is no tomorrow. That should not be the case. Take care of your money and it will take care of you. Greek philosopher Aristotle was damned right: “Money is a guarantee that we may have what we want in the future. Though we need nothing at the moment, it ensures the possibility of satisfying a new desire when it arises.”

When it comes to life, inspirational author William A. Ward gives this advice: “Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.”

Ward’s statement seems to jibe with the words of British stateman Sir Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

At the end of the day, you can’t take money with you. Let money be your slave instead of being your master. I was re-

minded of the story shared by James A. Feehan: There was this businessman whose only interest in life was to play the stock market. He studied the �inancial pages of the newspapers greedily every day. He became so obsessed with �inances that one day he said aloud to himself: “I would give anything to see the paper one year from now.”

No sooner were the words of his mouth, than there was a puff of smoke in the room and a little genie handed him a newspaper and then disappeared. As soon as he got over this shock, he realized that his wish had been granted. The paper in his hand was dated for next year. Feverishly, he found the �inancial page and then his eyes bulged when he saw how the market had developed. He wrote down the stocks that had jumped highest and won the most money in that time.

He got into his car and went down to his stockbroker with this latest information. He took the newspaper along and was browsing through it before he started off. Then suddenly he noticed his name in the death column. It described the cause of his death and the funeral arrangements.

“Make money your god, and it will plague you like the devil,” American novelist and lawyer Henry Fielding once reminded.

CREATE THE WORLD THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO BE Design your life – and your environment – according to the skills, learning, gifts and talents God has rewarded you with.

This is not an advice that exclusively comes from me but from many other motivational authors, writers and teachers and life coaches.

It is something people always forget – or abandon – when they suddenly shift their attention to something else and change gears intuitively.

There are emotional roadblocks that deter us from pursuing our goals and objectives.

Among them are envy, jealousy, greed, hatred, unforgiveness, revenge, bitterness, resentment, prejudice and guilt.

Get rid of these as quickly as you can.

As we meet and greet people every day - people who exhibit altogether different reactions to life’s stimuli – a person is in�luenced to an extent by the behavior people express.

Philosophically, learning is quite different from understanding.

If you learn the behavior of people who express their negative emotions considered as roadblocks to human peace and prosperity, wisely understanding them will give you a clearer view of the world you want to create for yourself.

Heraclitus said: “Much learning does not teach understanding.”

Some people just want to ride piggyback on somebody else’s success, like that �ly who lands on top of the carabao.

They think highly of themselves without looking where they are standing on.

Creating your own world just the way you want it to be may not be easy. But it can be done. And you don’t need to live alone in solitude.

Throw away your excess baggage. Realizing that excess baggage is a burden, unload all of them at the �irst possible

turn.

Always travel following a straight line. This way you don’t complicate life’s simple concerns by making unnecessary left and right turns and detours.

Select the right men and women to get into your company. A few with solid proven foundations of their own are enough to make your day.

Know where you �it in.

You can be a square peg in a round hole without realizing it because you get a warm and rousing welcome initially. A raucous company can push you hard with their boisterous screams and fraternal yells but they could be pushing you to the wrong way.

Have a sketch of what you want in life. You need a checklist. By process of elimination, cross out the erroneous entries that do not meet your specs. By omitting these unnecessary wants, what remains are your real targets.

Synchronize your efforts and prioritize the list according to the size and time needed to accomplish them. Itemize them as U-R-G-E-N-T, Second Priority and Third priority.

Be generous with your time when friends need your counsel and assistance. You will get the same treatment when you need theirs.

Be cheerful always and infect your friends so that your world and theirs jibe in unison and gladness. Be tolerant of other’s failures but do not subscribe to their mediocrity.

Be self-reliant. Work hard and toil honestly. Your integrity will vouch for yourself when the reckoning comes. Nothing is better than an unsullied and principled character.

The world you are creating should contain great ideas for your re�lection. It should not be too small to suffocate your growth nor too large to nurture a bloated ego.

Identify yourself with gra-

cious winners as well as good losers. You inevitably learn from both their achievements and their failures.

Keep a record of your biography for posterity. Your children and your family should pick up from where you left off, continuing your positive legacy that you can indeed create your world the way you want it to be.

Refuse to be cowed by imagined fears and doubts. Do not allow negative thoughts to be sown in your world.

Believe in yourself at all times. Before you know it, your dreams, your aspirations and goals are slowly but surely being realized.

3 Mati barangays now drug-cleared

ITY OF MATI, DAVAO O R I E N TA L —A f t e r successfully meeting the requirements set by the Dangerous Drugs Board Regulations number 3, series of 2017, three barangays in the City of Mati has been declared drug-cleared in a declaration and ceremonial signing on June 26 at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Session Hall, City of Mati.

Barangays Badas, Tagbinonga, and Mayo were declared drug-cleared in time for the celebration of the International Day of Anti-Drug Abuse and Illicit Traf�icking (IDDAIT).

Witnessed by the respective Punong Barangays and the drug reformists, the passage declaring the three barangays cleared from drugs was read by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Regional Director Antonio D. Rivera, who at the same time is the Chairman of the Regional Oversight Committee.

“After thorough assessment and validation pertinent to their compliance with the parameters

as enumerated in section 8 Dangerous Drug Board Regulation Number 3, Series of 2017, I hereby declare Barangay Badas, Tagbinonga, all of City of Mati, Davao Oriental as drugcleared barangays as of July 3, 2018, and Barangay Mayo, City of Mati, Davao Oriental as drug-cleared barangay as of June 26, 2019,” he said.

City Government of�icials congratulated the Punong Barangays for successfully doing their part for being at the frontline in the war against illegal drugs. Vice Mayor Glenda Rabat-Gayta said the city government is proud of the current status of the three barangays, stressing that it is a manifestation of ensuring the sustainability of its drug-cleared status considering the huge population of the said barangays being at the economic center of the province.

“With the help of our PADAC Of�icer, and with the effort of our CADAC Of�icer, we have already cleared four, so �ive more to go.

Why did it take us this long?

Because Mati is the center of the province. And we are not in a hurry because we wanted to do it right. We have to do it step by step and to ensure that once we declared cleared at least we can be proud to say it’s really cleared,” she said.

Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) Action Of�icer and at the same time Provincial Administrator Art Benjie commended the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council’s (CADAC) achievement, saying that it is indeed a manifestation that the government is really serious with its campaign against illegal drugs. Of the three barangays, only Barangay Mayo has been identi�ied under the PDEA watchlist. But the CADAC still conducted clearing operations in the other two barangays due to the presence of drug personalities in the said areas.

“We want to address what is the real problem, what is the real score in the community. From about 79 barangays which are affected under the watchlist of PDEA, we are now on our

74th Barangay to be declared as drug cleared, and the �irst province, hopefully, to be declared as drug-free province in the region, in the whole island of Mindanao,” he said.

With only �ive remaining barangays not yet cleared from drugs, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Provincial Director Orle Cabaobao challenged all concerned stakeholders to beef up efforts in clearing the City from illegal drugs considering the possible approval of Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) Act by 2020.

“By 2020, SGLG will already be an act, unlike now that it is optional so it is alright to pass or not.

And maybe one indicator [to pass the seal] is being a drug-cleared city, so if the remaining barangays are not yet cleared, the city will not get the Seal,” he said.

ore than 70 LGU employees and volunteers from different barangays participate in the voluntary mobile blood donation program conducted by the City Health Of�ice (CHO) and Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC) today at the City Hall lobby.

"This is the �irst time that I have donated my blood and I feel really good knowing that this will help someone," said Edmundo Aleonar, 42, of the City Social Welfare and Development Of�ice (CSWDO).

"Donating blood improves emotional and physical health. It may lower the risk of heart

disease and certain cancers, help liver stay healthy, reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, provide a sense of belonging and many more," said City Blood Program Coordinator Ma. Mildred Suello, RMT III. Suello added that donors and their direct dependents can avail discounted blood processing fees from DRMC in whenever they will need blood.

The Hungarian Film Festival: A window Hungary may be thousands of miles away, but through the magic of cinema, Dabawenyos were recently given a window to the eastern European country with the opening of the Davao edition of the 3rd Hungarian Film Festival in the Philippines (HUFF) last June 19, 2019.

Organised by the Embassy of Hungary in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, SM Cinemas and SM Lanang Premier, this year’s HUFF marks the first time for it to be presented in Visayas and Mindanao.

“We wanted to expand the scope of the festival. While it remains a weeklong event in Manila, Davao and Cebu will be treated to monthly screenings running from June until November 2019,” shared Hungarian ambassador to the Philippines Jozsef Bencze in his welcome remarks.

Inaugurating the 2019 film festival, the Embassy of Hungary and its partners screened “Kincsem — Bet on Revenge” at the SM Lanang Premier Cinemas in Davao. “Bet on Revenge” is a historical adventure film loosely based on the exploits of Kincsem, a world famous racing horse of unparalleled speed. Set agains the backdrop of 19th century political turmoil in Hungary, the film is tale of love, revenge and sportsmanship.

Johnson, a legendary star for the Lakers in their 1980s “Showtime” era, resigned from his job in

Leonard, a 27-year-old American forward, likely wants to know all the details behind the split and its lasting impact upon the Lakers before he considers playing for his hometown team, which has pulled together enough money to make a maximum contract offer to another player in the off-season.

If the Lakers can over-

come their front of�ice chaos and make an effective pitch to Leonard, he could join LeBron James and Anthony Davis, set to come to the Lakers in a trade deal with New Orleans that cannot be con�irmed until July 6, to create a powerhouse superteam lineup for the purple and gold.

Leonard did not opt into the �inal year of his contract with the Raptors, making him an unrestricted free agent.

While he is likely to receive a top offer from the Raptors that exceeds what any rival could offer, Leon-

ard could sign a two-year deal and be in position to maximize his money in 2021 by even more if he so desires.

Leonard could also return to the Raptors, with whom he won his second NBA crown. Leonard was named Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals this year and with San Antonio when he sparked the San Antonio Spurs to the 2014 title. He was traded from the Spurs to the Raptors last July.

IRON HAND IN SPORTS NEEDED The resignation of Ricky Vargas from the Philippine Olympic Committee presidency that collaterally forced the subsequent stepping down of four more top POC of�icials is a clear sign that Philippine sports is in a lamentable state of anarchy, confusion and chaos.

These twin incidents occurred as the country is just �ive months away from hosting the 2019 SEA Games, igniting sad thoughts that the Duterte government might be in for an embarrassing disappointment when the curtains are raised in November.

Of course, these developments are nothing new to this deadline beater as I had been a witness to worse occurrences in the past three decades of sports coverage,

particularly the goings-on inside the POC-PSC affairs.

The enmity between the POC and the PSC - the government agency tasked to oversee grassroots sports development into full fruition – is not imagined but real. It has been like this since the birth of the PSC in 1990.

Now comes the PHISGOC, an entity that used to be in the past just an ad hoc group that automatically dissolves after every SEAG hosting.

It suddenly transformed into a foundation to legalize and strengthen its position and subtly usurped the functions that originally were POC’s province.

The strong-arm tactics the PHISGOC are �lexing forced Vargas to tender his irrevocable res-

ignation to avoid getting into a heated confrontation, an action I initially thought was an act of cowardice on his part.

The hullabaloo is not good for our image in the 11-member ASEAN community because it projects how disunited our sports leaders are at a time when our country is already moving upward.

Asia is not the only one recognizing our positive economic movement but also the world as the Philippines is rated the fastest growing economy in this part of the globe.

But why should our sports leaders allow politics to rear its ugly head in the hosting of the biennial conclave when the SEAG is even considered as the lowest

level in competition standards?

Listen, guys. The POC – with its member national sports associations - is the legitimate NGO that has been involved in the SEAG since the latter’s inception back in the late seventies.

The POC, not the PHISGOC, is the one invited to meetings and deliberations in the Southeast Asian Games Federation as an original council member to discuss pertinent policy matters, has voting rights and enjoys autonomy.

This helter-skelter of a situation cannot be tolerated.

To clear the air and to make people toe the line, PRRD should issue an EO as to which agency should be the rightful of�ice to lead in the SEAG hosting.

The PHISGOC is reportedly meddling in the operational tasks that are long embedded in the POC, unilaterally moving, transferring or re-assigning sports venues without due consultation.

We heard that NSAs are complaining about the delayed publication of sports manuals which are used as guidelines for every sport in the SEAG calendar.

There are also reports that PHISGOC of�icials and employees are highly over-paid, receiving hefty sums and commissions.

Maybe, the P5 billion SEAG budget has something to do with the present state of affairs in the hosting of the 2019 SEAG. Oh, quo vadis, Philippine sports? GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!

Milo Marathon returns to Davao Oct 30 T

he 2019 National MILO Marathon, which will kick off with the Manila leg next month, returns to Davao City on October 20 as one of the nine qualifying legs of the country’s most elite footrace.

More than 150,000 runners are expected to take part in the 2019 edition of the marathon series which will center on the theme, “One Team. One Nation. Go Philippines!” in support for the Filipino athletes competing in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).

Six-time champion Mary Joy Tabal and 2018 National Finals runner-up Jerald Zabala will represent the Philippines in the SEA Games slated November 30 to December 11.

“We call on the entire nation to get involved and rally behind our athletes as they compete in our home soil for this signi�icant sporting event,” said MILO Sports manager Lester Castillo during the event launching on Friday at the Conrad Hotel in Pasay City.

“The SEA Games marks an exciting time for Philippine sports. May this event serve as an inspiration to all our runners to aspire for greatness throughout the season,” he added.

The race will kick off in Metro Manila on July 28, followed by Subic Bay Freeport Zone (August 4), Lucena (September 15), Batangas (September 22), Cebu (September 29), Iloilo (October 6), General Santos (October 13), Davao (October 20), Cagayan De Oro (November 17), and in Tarlac (January 19, 2020).

For the �irst time, the National Finals will take place in January 2020 to make way for the SEA Games.

Tarlac City will host the grand �inale in celebration of its annual KAISA Festival, the city’s week-long �iesta, to provide a festive and cultural experience for all participating runners.

“We, the City of Tarlac are thrilled to open our doors to all running enthusiasts to celebrate this grand milestone with us. Preparations are underway and we are in close coordination with our organizing committees to ensure that every runner will have a fun-�illed experience in Tarlac,” National Finals organizer Vlad Rodriguez said.

The 2020 National Finals is also something to look forward to with the participation of the Indonesian champions of the MILO 10-K run.

During the press conference, the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) has awarded its Silver Label certi�ication trophy to the 2018 National MILO Marathon for meeting the stringent criteria for quality location and logistics, course measurement and management, and actual event stage and �low.

“The Silver Label certi�ication by PATAFA in their inaugural Road Race Tier Rating System has inspired us to deliver another unforgettable season this year,” Castillo said.

PATAFA president Philip Ella Juico said he is happy with the partnership with MILO. “We are happy to work alongside MILO in our other events such as the Philippine National Games and the Philippine Athletics Championships.
