On Tuesday, 18 June 2019, the �irst �light from Doha to Davao was welcomed with a celebratory water cannon salute at the Davao International Airport. Qatar Airways �light QR936 departed Hamad International Airport (HIA) on Tuesday, 18 June 2019, at 02:45 am and landed in Davao at 5:20 pm local time.

In a statement released by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive H.E. Akbar Al Baker said, “Qatar Airways is very proud to extend its reach into the Philippines by launching [our] third gateway into this beautiful country.”

Baker said the inclusion of Davao to their roster of destinations in the world signi�ies the opening and further strengthening of Davao’s inclusion into the Far East region’s global network.

The Qatar �lag carrier’s inaugural �light to Davao was followed by a brief press conference where Qatar Airways Philippines Country Manager Rohan Seneviratne gave the media an in-depth look at the operations and achievements

resident Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law requiring clean restrooms, lactation stations, and free internet in all transport terminals, stations and roll-on/roll-off terminals.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11311 on April 17, 2019 but a copy of the document was released to reporters on Wednesday.

Under the law, the state “recognizes that the right of every establishment to a fair return of investment carries with it a corresponding social responsibility to provide adequate facilities for the comfort of its clientele.”

“Towards the end, the State shall hereby require the owners, operators, and administrators of land transportation terminals, stations, stops, rest areas, and rollon/roll-off terminals to improve their facilities through the provision of free internet services, and clean sanitary facilities,” the law read.

Among the standards for sanitary facilities in-

clude providing separate restrooms for persons with disabilities, male, and female passengers; adequate ventilation and lighting; safe, adequate, and running water supply.

There should also be a �lush system; toilet seat with cover; a lavatory with toilet paper, mirror, soap, hand dryer and door lock; a waste bin; and exclusive space for diaper-changing.

Lactation stations should also be private, clean, sanitary, and well-ventilated rooms where nursing mothers can wash up, breastfeed,

or express their milk comfortably.

The law also prohibits transport terminals to collect fees from passengers for the use of regular sanitary facilities.

Instead of fees, passengers only need to show the paid bus ticket for the day in order to avail of the free use of sanitary facilities.

A P5,000 �ine will be imposed on the owner, operator, or administrator of land transport terminals, stations, stops, rest areas who do not comply with the law.

Land ownership issues derail school buildings’ construction

A

top city of�icial cited land ownership issues as the primary reason for the non-construction of 34 school buildings in 2018 despite the availability of funds.

Atty. Tristan Dwight Domingo, assistant city administrator said that the city cannot proceed with the construction of school buildings unless it has proof that the land where the project is situated is owned by the city government.

“Unless we can present suf�icient proof that we have the authority, or we owned the land to construct something, the city cannot proceed in constructing it,” he said.

Domingo said that some of these projects that have corresponding budgetary allocation have been recommended by different agencies.

He said the city government had been generous enough to be put in the budget and fund these projects with the objective of building a structure, edi�ice or classroom, but when the time came in getting the requirements from the requesting

of�ices, they failed to follow up.

Domingo said with this experience, the city government has changed the mechanism in supporting certain requests, especially projects that are really needed by the people.

“We request that if there are similar pleas in the future, we recommend that all the requirements must be to the appropriate of�ices like the City Engineer’s Of�ice and the City Planning and Development Of�ice,” he said.

Domingo said the Commission on Audit’s call is a learning experience, thus the need for the completion of the requirements before budget allocation.

According to the 2018 audit report of the COA, the local government of Davao City failed to build 34 public school buildings and implement 27 infrastructure projects meant to spur socio-economic development last year despite available funds worth more than P320-million.

The COA said Davao City had a total budget of P292.15-million for the con-

Self-rated poverty falls to record low 38%: SWS F ewer Filipinos consider themselves poor based on the results of a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey for the �irst quarter of 2019.

Of the families surveyed in their polls from March 28 to 31, 2019, a record-low 38 percent or an estimated 9.5 million families consider themselves as poor.

"This is 12 points below the 50 percent (est. 11.6 million) in December 2018, and 4 points below the previous record-low of 42 percent in September 2016 and March 2018," the SWS reported.

According to the polling �irm, this new record-low Self-Rated Poverty score is "a continuing recovery from the 10-point rise within the �irst three quarters of 2018."

The proportion of Self-Rated Poor families rose from 42 percent in March 2018, to 48 percent in June 2018, and 52 percent in September 2018.

It subsided by two points to 50 percent in December and fell to 38 percent in March 2019.

According to the SWS, the Self-Rated Poverty was down in all areas and record-low in Mindanao.

It attributed the overall decline to decreases of 16 points in Balance Luzon, 12 points in Mindanao, six points in the Visayas, and two points in Metro Manila.

SC resets oral arguments over writ of kalikasan suit

he Supreme Court (SC) has rescheduled the oral arguments originally scheduled next week on a "writ of kalikasan" suit questioning government action on a disputed territory off Palawan.

"The oral argument on G.R. No. 246209 (Monico A. Abogado, et al. vs. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Represented by Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, et al.) set on June 25, 2019, has been moved to July 2, 2019, Tuesday," the SC said in an advisory sent to newsmen Wednesday.

Last week, the High Court originally scheduled oral arguments on a petition for writ of kalikasan against the government to protect and rehabilitate the marine environment in Panatag Shoal, Ayungin Shoal, and Panganiban Reef.

A writ of kalikasan was

sought by petitioners Monico A. Abogado, citing supposed violations of environmental laws in the Philippine waters and in the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in said areas.

The suit was brought by members of the Kalayaan Palawan Farmers and Fisherfolk Association who are members of the �isherfolk community in the municipality of Kalayaan in Palawan, while the others are residents of Sitio Kinabukasan, Cawag, Zambales.

The group cited supposed violation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, the Philippine Fisheries Code, and Presidential Decree 1586 or Establishing the Environmental Impact Statement System in the Philippines.

From 51 percent in December 2018, the Self-Rated Poverty went down to 35 percent in the �irst quarter of 2019 for Balance Luzon, while it recorded a huge decrease in Mindanao from 49 percent in December to 37 percent this March.

In the Visayas, it fell by six points from 61 percent in December to 55 percent.

In Metro Manila, it fell by two points from 30 percent in December to 28 percent in March.

The same survey also found a new record-low 27 percent (est. 6.8 million) of Filipinos rating their food as Mahirap or Poor, termed by SWS as Food-Poor.

"This is seven points below the 34 percent (est. 7.9 million) in December 2018,

and two points below the previous record-low of 29 percent," it said.

Among others, the March 2019 survey concluded that 15.3 percent of Filipino families are newly out of poverty.

Of the 62 percent Self-Rated Non-Poor families, it said 15 percent used to be poor 1-4 years ago (newly non-poor) and 20 percent used to be poor �ive or more years ago (usually non-poor).

The March 2019 Social Weather Stations Survey was conducted using faceto-face interviews of 1,440 adults aged 18 years old and above nationwide: 360 each in Balance Luzon, Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao. (PNA)

resident Rodrigo Duterte said he plans to appoint Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat as board member of state regulator Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) once he retires from service.

During the 121st Philippine Navy anniversary in Sangley Point, Cavite City on Monday night, Duterte bared his plan to appoint Salamat to the MWSS who is set to retire next month.

“Hi, sir. Kailan ka mag-retire, sir? (When are you retiring) July 1?

Next month. Kung papayag si (Ricardo) Dick Morales, si Dick i-move out ko sa MWSS. Ikaw ang ilagay ko (If Dick Morales agrees, I’ll move him out of the MWSS and replace him by you),” Duterte said in his speech.

Salamat is currently Armed Forces of the Philippines-Northern Luzon commander.

On May 27 this year, Duterte appointed Morales, a retired military general, as MWSS board member to

serve until June 30, 2019.

Despite criticisms, Duterte explained his preference to appoint military men in government because they followed orders immediately.

“The one thing that really ails the system is bureaucracy is not fashioned, is not crafted to solve problems immediately. If you give them the project, they will debate with you. Then it would take them eternity to do the project until the money is gone,” Duterte said.

“I decided to shift and despite and in spite of criticisms of militarization,” he added.

Duterte’s plan to appoint Salamat to the MWSS comes after he threatened to replace its of�icials for failing to address the water shortage in some parts of Metro Manila on March.

He also threatened to terminate contracts of two water concessionaires — Maynilad and Manila Water for their lack of preparedness to prevent the problem. (PNA)

Pinoys in Japan told to remain vigilant after 6.7 earthquake

ilipinos in Japan are urged to closely monitor announcements and instructions from local authorities after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake jolted the country on Tuesday night.

The powerful quake hit Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan at around 10:30 p.m., Japan time. According to Embassy records, there are at least 815 registered Filipino in the area.

"We also got info from local news late this morning that while there were some injuries, thankfully there weren't any fatalities. So far no one has reached out to us for help," Consul General to Tokyo Robespierre Bo-

livar told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency earlier issued a tsunami alert for Yamagata Prefecture, as well as coastal areas in Niigata and Ishikawa Prefectures following the quake, which was eventually lifted at around 1 a.m. the following day.

Prior to this, railway services have been partly suspended and many households remained without power.

Bolivar assured the Embassy is ready to provide assistance as it closely monitors the situation and the well-being of Filipinos in the area.

New shipping company set to ply BIMP-EAGA sea route

A

new player in the BIMP-EAGA sub-regional cooperation shipping service, Reefer Pilipinas Express Line started its trial sail of the Davao–Bitung sea route early this week, signaling the revival of the Mindanao-North Sulawesi route.

BIMP-EAGA stands for Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area, a sub-regional cooperation formed in 1994 to accelerate development of member-countries’ focus areas through cross-border economic integration.

The maiden voyage for the Davao-General Santos-Bitung route was inaugurated by Presidents Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Joko Widodo last April 2017, as a side event to the ASEAN Leaders Summit.

“It can be recalled that the �irst vessel used for the route was too large at

500 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) capacity.

We had to look for a more smaller vessel to continue the operation of the DGB route,” said Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Deputy Executive Director Romeo Montenegro.

Reefer Filipinas is a Manila-based company recently established to support the Philippines in reviving the route. The company will be utilizing a conventional type vessel with load capacity up of to 290 TEU containers, and 10,000 loose cargoes.

Finally, the promise that’s a long time coming for Mindanao is dawning.

Japan and the Philippine government have signed a $202-million (P10.5 billion) loan agreement to build and improve roads in Mindanao, including war-torn Marawi City according to the Department of Finance. The loan agreement was the highlight of the Philippines-Japan Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation which culminated on Tuesday in Clark, Pampanga. Finance Sec. Carlos Dominguez and Japan International Cooperation Agency Senior Vice President Yasushi Tanaka signed the deal.

The road projects aim to reinvigorate local economies and reduce poverty in its communities by linking them to Mindanao’s trade centers.

Along with the Mindanao railway project, Mindanao is �inally getting its share of the government resources after being the one that’s always left out in past administrations.

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) is leading the creation of more viable opportunities in trade and investment, transportation, agri-business, tourism, energy, and environmental protection and management, among others.

The Duterte administration is also focused in building the capacity of local government units to deliver excellent public service and promote good governance in Mindanao. MinDA is likewise working on the Mindanao Development Corridors which is a development strategy aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Mindanao industries by providing common service facilities.

With the impetus on Mindanao, it is now a matter of seeing the programs and projects implemented on time and according to plan.

As it is, President Duterte has three years left in his term and that is the best opportune time for Mindanao to get what it deserves and what it has missed in decades.

BAGOBO’S HUMAN SACRIFICE Beyond the beads and trinkets that can be traced to the Chinese and Polynesians, the Bagobos, before embracing more civilized ways, have been known for their headhunting and human sacri�ice, part of the tribe’s ceremonial cannibalism.

The all-embracing documentation of human sacri�ice can be found in Jesuit missionary letters, American reports, and published �ield accounts. The most extensive was collated by Laura Watson Benedict (18611932), the �irst American anthropologists to study the Bagobos in 1906, in her book ‘A Study of Bagobo Ceremonial, Magic and Myth’ (1916).

The ritualistic human sacri�ice is called paghuaga, part of the ancient but speci�ic Bagobo custom; the offering takes place during the festival of Ginum, a kind of feast. Though the tribal leader can opt to substitute the victim for a fowl, such switch seldom happens. Benedict noted: “A fundamental feature of the worship of certain gods is the offering to them, from time to time, of a human victim, with appropri-

ate rites. The war-god, Mandarangan, demands this sacri�ice; and the persons who take part in the ceremony pray that he will keep them from sickness and death, in return for the human blood which they… are pouring out for him to drink.

At the Ginum a deity of the altar, called Tolus ka Balekat, is the one for whom, from ancient times, the human sacri�ice has been killed and ceremonially offered up.”

The practice of substituting a human victim was opted only in certain conditions. Fr. Mateo Gisbert, SJ, a former parish priest of Davao, wrote about this in a letter to his Mission Superior: “When any contagious disease appears, or whenever any of their relatives die, the Bagobos believe that the demon is asking them for victims, and they immediately hasten to offer them to him so that he may not kill them.

They are accustomed generally to show their good will in the act of sacri�ice in the following words.”

Another kind of human sacri�ice was the gaka which in-

volved a Bagobo of virtue and courage as victim. He was bound to a frame (takosan), teared to pieces, and killed so his liver, removed before his was buried, could be ceremonially eaten by other valorous Bagobo men.

On the �inal day of the Ginum, soon after daybreak, Benedict wrote, “the slave is taken to the forest, or to the beach if the village is not too far from the coast. All the people from several miles around gather to attend the ceremony, except the younger children who remain at home, where they later have a little supplementary performance. At the place picked out for the ceremony, a frame - the takosan - is set up.”

The frame has three vertical posts, the patindog, and a crossbeam, a decorated balabag, at the top. The embellishment includes fresh areca palm shoots.

In front of the frame was a hole, the kutkut, where the remains of the victim are buried. Adjacent to the frame is a small shrine, the tambara, that comprises a “white china bowl [for offerings were] wedged into the split end of a

rod of bamboo set upright on the ground and secured to a tree or other support.”

Fr. Gisbert admitted in his letter that he did not personally see the ritual but chanced upon the decorated poles, which were signs a human sacri�ice was held there. He remarked: “From the place of the sacri�ice they then go to the house of their chief or the master of the feast, holding branches in their hands which they place in a large bamboo, which is not only the chief adornment, but the altar of the house in which they meet… Curious persons who are present at those feasts, do not understand the language of the old men nor see anything that hints of a human sacri�ice, but those who are fully initiated in the Bagobo customs, will note immediately the token of the human sacri�ice which was made in the woods on the preceding day among the branches placed in the bamboo or drum, before which the old men above mentioned make their invocation to Darago.”

The conduct of a human sacri�ice was preceded with the old

men performing magical rites that were allied “with the carving of wooden �igures and the planting of medicinal branches for the exorcism of evil spirits; they control the entire ceremonial.”

Human sacri�ice, which was also observed in the islands of Luzon and the Visayas, was discouraged when the Spanish missionaries set foot to colonize the islands. With most of the tribes eventually converting Catholicism, the religious ceremony was banned.

The American colonists, harbinger of Protestantism in the country, also expressed abhorrence toward the customs of killing human as offering but it took quite some time before the last ritual was reported and con�irmed. Benedict wrote: “It is doubtful if any investigator will ever be in a position to record from personal observation a human sacri�ice. But of the signi�icance, and of the manner of its performance, we can get a tolerably clear idea from the several accounts that have leaked out, or that have been extracted by questioning.”

Agassiz refused on the grounds the lectures of this kind took up too much time that he should be devoting to research and writing.

The messenger persisted, saying that they were prepared to pay handsomely for the talk.

“That’s no inducement to me at all,” Agassiz replied. “I can’t afford to waste my time making money.”

That brings us to the subject of money. “As much money and life as you could want!” J.K. Rowling wrote in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “The two things most human beings would choose above all – the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them.”

American poet and satirist Dorothy Parker also said: “If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.” And what did US actor Will Rogers say? “Too many people,” he pointed out, “spend

money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.”

Money, as Wikipedia de�ines it, “is any item or veri�iable record that is generally accepted as payment for good and services and repayment of debts, such as taxes, in a particular country or socio-economic context.”

There are four functions of money: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value and sometimes, a standard of deferred payment. Any item or veri�iable record that ful�ills these four functions can be considered as money.

“Money is historically an emergent market phenomenon establishing a commodity money, but nearly all contemporary money systems are based on �iat money,” Wikipedia explains. “Fiat money, like any check or note of debt, is without use value as a physical commodity, It derives its value by being declared by a government to be legal tender; that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment within the boundaries of the country, for ‘all debts, public and private.’”

The word “money” is believed to have originated from the temple of Juno, on Capitoline, one of Rome’s seven hills. “In the ancient world, Juno was often associated with money,” Wikipedia claims. “The temple of Juno Moneta at Rome was the place

where the mint of ancient Rome was located.”

The name “Juno” may derive from the Etruscan goddess Uni (which means “the one,” “unique,” “unit,” “union”, “united”) and “Moneta” either from the Latin word, “monere” (remind, warn, or instruct) or the Greek word “moneres” (alone, unique).

Money comes in different forms and different stages.

Workers earn it while spendthrifts burn it. Bankers lend it. Women spend it. Forgers fake it. Taxes take it. Dying leave it as heirs receive it. Thrifty saves it and misers crave it. Rich increase it while gamblers lose it.

Matthew J. Ritchie shares this story: There were some Mexican Indians on their way to market with pottery. Some wealthy tourists stopped them on the way and offered to buy their entire stock for a good price.

The Indians refused and explained, “Señora, in my town no one can read and write; there is no electricity, so there can be no radios. Some must go to the city every week to get the news of the world, and without pottery we cannot get a place in the market to sell. So, we cannot sell you all the pottery jars, for they are a means to our end. Señora, we would be disgraced if we should return home without nothing but money.”

Money isn’t everything. It’s not how you spend your money but how you use it. I was reminded of the words of Frank C. Clark. “Many folks think they aren’t good at earning money,” he said, “when what they don’t know is how to use it.”

When they have money, some people spend it all as if there is no tomorrow. That should not be the case. Take care of your money and it will take care of you. Greek philosopher Aristotle was damned right: “Money is a guarantee that we may have what we want in the future. Though we need nothing at the moment, it ensures the possibility of satisfying a new desire when it arises.”

When it comes to life, inspirational author William A. Ward gives this advice: “Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.”

Ward’s statement seems to jibe with the words of British stateman Sir Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

At the end of the day, you can’t take money with you. Let money be your slave instead of being your master. I was re-

minded of the story shared by James A. Feehan: There was this businessman whose only interest in life was to play the stock market. He studied the �inancial pages of the newspapers greedily every day. He became so obsessed with �inances that one day he said aloud to himself: “I would give anything to see the paper one year from now.”

No sooner were the words of his mouth, than there was a puff of smoke in the room and a little genie handed him a newspaper and then disappeared. As soon as he got over this shock, he realized that his wish had been granted. The paper in his hand was dated for next year. Feverishly, he found the �inancial page and then his eyes bulged when he saw how the market had developed. He wrote down the stocks that had jumped highest and won the most money in that time.

He got into his car and went down to his stockbroker with this latest information. He took the newspaper along and was browsing through it before he started off. Then suddenly he noticed his name in the death column. It described the cause of his death and the funeral arrangements.

“Make money your god, and it will plague you like the devil,” American novelist and lawyer Henry Fielding once reminded.

COCONUT: (Third of Four Parts)

T

here’s more to coconut than just copra.

“An array of products vital to man’s daily life can be derived from this amazing tree,” says Dr. Patricio Faylon, a recognized agricultural policy expert and a luminary in research and development community. “The Philippines is fortunate to have planted large areas to this crop, making the country one of the top coconut producers in the world.”

Copra or dried coconut meat is the main products of coconuts. It has high oil content, as much as 64%. Coconut oil, which is the most readily digested among all fats of general use in the entire world, furnishes about 9,500 calories of energy per kilo. Its chief competitors are soya bean oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil.

“It is not enough that we plant the most number of trees or produce the highest number of nuts,” pointed out Dr. Faylon. “It is getting the highest value and bene�its from this crop that matters most. The best way to do this is to transform the nuts and other coconut parts into high-value products.”

One such product is virgin coconut oil (VCO). Most scientists believe coconut oil is most potent when it’s virgin – that is, extracted through pressing without the use of heat. Thanks to the pioneering work of the late Dr. Julian Banzon

and his protégé, Dr. Teresita Espino, the chemistry of virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been known and its bene�icial effects on the human body have been con�irmed.

“VCO is a natural oil from fresh, mature kernel of the coconut,” explains the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) in its Compendium of Commercially-Viable Coconut Technologies. “It can be obtained through mechanical or natural means. It can also be processed with or without the use of heat.”

Unlike the commercial coconut oil, VCO does not undergo chemical re�ining, bleaching, or deodorizing that leads to the alteration of the oil.

The product is suitable for consumption without the need for further processing.

In Davao Region, one entrepreneur who uses VCO in his products is Alvin Louie Ang from Pantukan, Compostela Valley.

He has developed beauty products with VCO as the main ingredient.

“I decided to broaden the use of coconuts, which are abundant in my province, by creating products which are considered a necessity,” Ang says. He thought of beauty soap. “These days, it is really hard to �ind an organic soap of good quality that is not very expensive. With that, I was inspired to make some VCO-based beauty soaps

and perfumes.”

In the United States, VCO has increasingly becoming popular in natural food circles and with vegans. It was described in a New York Times article as having a “haunting, nutty, vanilla �lavor” that also has a touch of sweetness that works well with baked goods, pastries, and sautés.

It was the late National Scientist Dr. Conrado S. Dayrit, touted to be the Father of VCO, who popularized the coconut product. His book, The Truth About Coconut Oil, became a bestseller and elevated coconut oil from folk medicine to a scienti�ic therapy. He found that VCO is sort of a drug “that regulates the body’s functions and defense mechanism. It restores the normal balance of tissues or cells that have become dysfunctional.”

Since the publication of the book fourteen years ago, the VCO has gone a long way. Because of many anecdotal evidences, which are hard to ignore, several studies have been carried out on it.

Last year, during the First World Coconut Congress, a neonatologist pointed out that VCO can be used as adjuvant treatment for cancer.

In the Philippines, nine Filipinos are diagnosed with cancer every hour, based on recent data released by the Department of Health and the Philippine Cancer Society Inc.

“Clinical trials on the use of VCO in ketogenic diet as supportive treatment for cancer has been shown to be highly promising under a clinical trial at the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) in Salzburg, Austria,” said a press released circulated by the Growth Publishing.

The home-produced VCO is a recognized source of bene�icial fatty acid metabolized in the liver as ketones in ketogenic diets. In the PMU clinical trial, the target is for ketogenic diet to achieve the socalled “Warburg effect,” where cancer cells are prevented from using glycolysis in order to produce the organic chemical ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) needed in the multiplication of cancer cells.

“Based on the results of rigorous preclinical and clinical studies performed thus far, the ketogenic diet would appear to be a promising and powerful option for adjuvant therapy for a range of cancers,” the PMU study said.

Dr. Mary Newport she cited the PMU study in her presentation during the coconut congress.

“It’s now being (used) for cancer because cancer cells like sugar. Some cancer cells use 200 times more sugar than the normal cell. They ferment sugar, the mitochondria ferments sugar.

They don’t metabolize it normally. But most cancer cells don’t use ke-

tones effectively as fuel,” she said.

In her presentation, “Combining Coconut Oil and Low Carbohydrate, Higher Fat Diet for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other Diseases,” Dr. Newport said: “Ketogenic diet attempts to starve the tumor, the cancer cells. But basically, your healthy cells and your brain can use ketones.

So, it can help in cancer.”

VCO is reportedly rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) that is converted to monolaurin by the human body. “When MCFAs are metabolized (in the human body), ketone bodies are created in the liver,” writes Ty Bollinger, a best-selling author, medical researcher, and health freedom advocate.

But what excites researchers about VCO is its lauric acid content.

“Fifty percent of coconut oil is lauric acid, a compound found in human breast milk, which makes it one of the best food sources for this nutrient available,” Bollinger notes. Lauric acid, if you care to know is bene�icial in deterring parasites, bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses.

According to some studies, one tablespoon of VCO contains 14 grams of total fat, of which 12 grams are saturated.

Most of the saturated fat found in most food like meat and cheese are considered long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). In comparison, the saturated fat in coconut oil

mostly comprised of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs).

The MCTs are easier for the human body to metabolize than LCTs. “While MCTs do not shrink cancer by themselves, but they have proved promising as a treatment for cancer,” a report said.

Unknowingly, VCO is also good for those having sexual problems.

The results of a clinical study done by the University of Santo Tomas on the effects of the extra VCO on cholesterol levels showed some of the participants to have “higher sex drive during the test phase.”

“It was an interesting observation that 13% of the VCO takers experienced becoming sexually active in the whole duration of their participation in the VCO study,” said Dr. Christina Binag, who headed the study.

The Philippines has introduced VCO to the world in 2000-2001 and remains to be world’s number one VCO exporter. In 2015, VCO was exported to 46 countries, the United Coconut Association of the Philippines said. The top importers were United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, and Japan. Other destinations were Belgium, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Australia. Smaller volumes went to Malaysia, Brazil, Taiwan, South Africa, France, China, Singapore and Czechoslovakia. For starters, the evening featured two beautiful Cava from Anna and Codorniu, and a fresh and fruity white Rioja by Viña - Pomal ViuraMalvasia which featured a rich and aromatic bouquet, notes of citrus and pears. I especially loved the Viura-Malvasia which featured bright notes of lemon and lime with a nice mineral finish.

Malita food trip I HAVE NEVER BEEN A BEACH PERSON. I love the beach but ain’t one you’d want to be with at the beach. For one, the sun and I do not see eye to eye. Too much sun exposure for me means “hello rosacea” in an instant. And yes, I burn easily. Not tan, but burn.

Just recently, after years of evading the sun, sand and sea, I have fallen in love with nature’s majestic creation -- the beach.

I do not know how or when it started, but yeah, I now yearn for some rewarding time under the tropical sun, with the sand on my toes and the sea at arms reach.

A planned road trip turned out to be a reality -- with my friends in tow and my work bag on my back, I was ready to add more color to my already tanned skin. Off to Malita we go.

To state, the ship-like deck is located within a sanctuary —the Tubalan Cove.

Tubalan Cove is, by far, one of the healthiest marine life sanctuary I’ve been to. Aside from the healthy marine life, it is also home to an underwater Japanese plane wreck that has been cove to many fish species and favourite of divers.

Over the years, the cove has been under the wings of the local government under the watchful eyes of Mayor Bradly Bautista. An underwater enthusiasts himself, the good mayor,

The family drama flick which is a co-production between GMA Pictures and Mic Test Entertainment (owned by Michael V. and his wife Carol Bunagan) will mark the return of the multi-talented comedian to the big screen after 10 years.

In his exclusive chat with GMANetwork.com, Paolo was impressed with how Michael V. handled his multiple roles in the movie.

He said, “It was a very

good experience especially for a first time director.

GLOBE STUDIOS’ films “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” and “Hintayan ng Langit” recently earned nominations at the 42nd Gawad Urian Awards, to be held at the UPFI (UP Film Institute) Film Center in Quezon City on June 18.

Nominated for Best Director were Lav Diaz, for his outstanding directorial job in “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw,” while veteran thespian Eddie Garcia earned a Best Actor nomination for his role as Manolo in “Hintayan ng Langit.”

It is another notable recognition for Globe Studios, who continue to co-produce outstanding creative film, television and online content.

“Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” (Season of the Devil) is the latest brilliant product of Diaz, a 4-hour epic which stars Piolo Pascual (Hugo) and Shaina Magdayao (Lorena). The film mixed Diaz’s usual ascetic aesthetics with powerful dialogues set in unaccompanied live “rock opera” fashion, a story told amid a late 1970s society that reeked with authoritarianism, repression and violence.

PSC hold cluster meetings with NSAs

eam Philippines reinforced their commitment to bring the delegation straight to the top of the 30th Southeast Asian Games with their continuous cooperation with Chef de Mission and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez’ initiatives for the delegation.

Eleven sports associations were consulted this morning as Ramirez’ secretariat continue to establish the status of the different sports’ status of preparation for the biennial meet.

The meeting is �irst of a series of in-depth consultations headed by a PSC Commissioner per cluster.

This morning’s cluster was presided by Comm. Ramon Fernandez. The other clusters are scheduled to meet the whole day of Thursday.

“We have to cover a lot of ground and we are heartened by the cooperation of everyone,” said Ramirez referring to lively and honest exchange of ideas among the national sports association representatives.

NSAs of boxing, pencak silat, wrestling, skateboarding, sambo, muaythai, wushu, judo, karatedo and arnis were all represented. Only three groups were unable to join the session.

“Just be open and let us know what you need” was Fernandez’ advise to the group when they started the meeting, following

Ramirez’ pronouncements that the agency will support their requirements as much as the PSC can.

A general consensus was the importance that foreign training plays in the overall success of their teams.

PSC Commissioners have thrown their support behind their Chairman as soon as he accepted the CDM position last May. With the Philippine Olympic Committee still unable to name Ramirez’ Deputy Chef de Mission, PSC Commissioners Arnold Agustin, Celia Kiram, Charles Maxey and Fernandez have stepped up their engagements with NSAs under their cluster to expedite the CDM’s work for Team Philippines.

EW YORK -- Teenage star Zion Williamson is set to be chosen with the top pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday as the New Orleans Pelicans launch their quest to build a team of championship contenders.

Williamson, who turns 19 on July 6, is the overwhelming favourite to be chosen with the number one selection after a dazzling season in college basketball with Duke University.

The 6 ft 7in (2.01m) teenager, who weighs in at 285 pounds (129kg), is regarded by many experts as the sort of once in a generation talent capable of reaching the pinnacle of the NBA. Williamson, who averaged averaged 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for Duke before declaring for the draft in April, offers a rare mix of imposing size and explosive athleticism.

"There are some things he obviously needs to work on, but at 6-7, 285, people ask who does he remind me of?

Nobody," said NBA TV analyst Steve Smith.

"There is not anyone I've seen like this (at that size). No one has jumped like this. There is nobody he reminds me of."

While Williamson's skills were not enough to carry Duke to the championship, his talent did see him win the Naismith College Player of the Year award.

The Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers agreed to a blockbuster trade on Saturday which will see Anthony Davis heading to the Lakers to form a partnership with LeBron James.

In return, New Orleans acquired the Lakers' Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart as well as three �irstround picks -- including the number four overall selection in Thursday's draft.

The Davis trade has given New Orleans added negotiating muscle for the draft. Reports on Monday said the Pelicans were contemplating swapping the number four pick in exchange for a more proven player.
