Another journalism mishap, says Mayor Duterte

avao City Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio denied a report she went crazy over a car reportedly given to President Rodrigo Duterte by evangelist Apollo Quiboloy.

“I categorically deny the 2016 Rappler story quoting President Rodrigo Duterte as saying that I “went crazy” because I wanted the car supposedly given to him by Pastor Apollo Quiboloy,” the presidential daughter said in a statement released on Monday.

“This incident never happened. I never saw an Expedition vehicle allegedly given by Pastor Quiboloy,” she said reacting to the report which she called as another ‘journalistic mishap.’

“The story was clearly a journalistic mishap and it was unfair and injurious to me as some-

one named in the article, something which would have been avoided had the writer conducted a simple process of veri�ication,” Mayor Duterte said.

She said her father “may have referred to another person with Inday as a name or he incorrectly remembered events.”

Palace confirms Cabinet clusters meeting on Monday

alacañang has con�irmed that the economic and security clusters of the Duterte Cabinet will hold a meeting on Monday (June 17) but it will be up to its members to decide whether the collision between a Filipino and Chinese �ishing vessels near Recto Bank (Reed Bank) in the West Philippine Sea will be discussed.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made this remark after Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles on Sunday bared that the Cabinet’s Economic Development and Security, Justice, and Peace clusters will be meeting to tackle the Recto Bank incident where a Chinese �ishing crew allegedly abandoned 22 Filipino �ishermen.

“Hindi maiiwasan na isa ito sa pag-uusapan (They cannot avoid that this will be among the topics discussed),” Nograles said in an interview over DZBB on Sunday (June 16).

Panelo, however, said that he could not con�irm or deny if the Recto Bank incident will indeed be brought up during the Cabinet clusters meeting.

“In the �irst place there is no special Cabinet meeting on the Recto Bank. Who said na meron (that there is)? Regular ‘yung cluster Cabinet meeting,” Panelo said in a Palace brie�ing.

“Whether that will be taken up or not, ‘di natin alam kung anong magiging agenda doon (we don’t know what their agenda

will be during the meeting),” he added.

Earlier, reports quoted Defense Secretary Del�in Lorenzana and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi con�irming that President Rodrigo R. Duterte called for a “special” Cabinet meeting to discuss the Recto Bank incident.

However, Panelo and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea denied that the President called for any Cabinet meeting to discuss the maritime issue.

Panelo explained that there could have been a “miscommunication” where a cluster Cabinet meeting was confused for a Cabinet meeting to be presided by the President.

“Wala namang special, palagay ko nagkaroon lang ng (There’s no special Cabinet meeting, I assume that there was only a) miscommunication with respect to cluster Cabinet meeting,” Panelo said.

Earlier, Nograles also clari�ied that a meeting among department secretaries in concerned clusters could not be called a Cabinet meeting if the President is not present.

Nograles said he does not think the President can attend the meeting since he will be attending the 121st anniversary of the Philippine Navy at Sangley Point in Cavite on the same day.

CTO rules: no extension of Q1 Real Property Tax due T he City Treasurer’s Of�ice (CTO) is no longer offering a second extension for payment of Real Property Tax (RPT) dues to the city government for the �irst quarter of the year.

City Treasurer Erwin Alparaque said the public. particularly the property owners had been duly informed of the extension to pay their obligations.

The CTO already extended the payment of

property taxes for the �irst quarter to June 30, 2019, after it encountered problems with its system when it implemented the increase in property tax rates.

“The �irst quarter pay-

ment will be until the end of this month only. There will be no more extension.

If they fail to pay, there will be corresponding penalties,” Alparaque said.

He said real property taxpayers should also remember that while the payment of tax dues for the �irst quarter had been extended, the real property taxes due for the second

he Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Sunday denied that 1,200 contract of service (COS) workers have been dismissed as claimed by one of its employees.

The DSWD explained that the reduction in the number of workers was not because of the dismissal but due to various reasons including the appointment of 876 COS workers to permanent, coterminous, casual and contractual positions from June 2018 to March 2019.

Based on records of the department, the COS positions have also been cut down due to the reduction in the 2019 approved budget of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).

It also cited the winding down of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahi-

rapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) with majority of employees in the program are under COS status while some COS workers resigned and transferred to other government agencies and the private sector.

In line with the expansion of its programs and services, the DSWD has, in fact, hired more workers.

As of April 28, 2019, the number of DSWD workforce nationwide is 27,000 composed of permanent, casual, contractual, coterminous, COS workers or Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) workers and Job Orders (JOs). Of this number, 13,294 are COS or MOA workers and JOs. The DSWD management has also been pushing for the regularization of quali�ied COS workers

he Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) on Sunday committed to helping the 22 �ishermen who were abandoned after their �ishing boat was allegedly hit by a Chinese vessel in the waters off the Recto Bank on June 9.

“The PCCI-lead International Chamber of Commerce and Philippine Silk Road International Chamber of Commerce (will) donate PHP1,000,000 for the livelihood support of Philippine �ishermen and for the repair of the �ishing boat in the Recto Bank incident, PHP 500,000 for repair and PHP 500,000 for livelihood support”, PCCI said in a statement.

The Chamber pledged

to donate the amount “upon the request of Mindoro Chamber of Commerce and after talking with the owner of the �ishing boat”.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director Elizer Salilig on Friday welcomed the �ishermen upon arrival at Occidental Mindoro aboard the Philippine Navy vessel BRP Ramon Alcaraz.

Salilig gave each of the �ishermen a sack of rice as immediate assistance and committed to distributing 22 �iberglass boats with complete accessories, including engine and nets to the �ishermen.

he Police Regional Of�ice 11 (Davao) has arrested 200 individuals for violating the gun ban and neutralized 25 persons in the �irst six months of the year.

From Jan. 13 to June 12, which covered the election period, PRO-11 arrested the 200 persons during the conduct of 11 police operations to implement search warrants, checkpoint operations, warrants of arrest, and illegal drugs buy-bust operations.

olice of�icials in Davao Region who are found to have invested in Ponzi-like investment schemes are not only in danger of losing their money or have lost their money, they will also face administrative charges and, possibly, relief from service, Police Major Jason Baria, spokesperson of the Police Regional Of�ice (PRO) 11 warned.

Baria said PRO director Brigadier General Marcelo Morales will charge them administratively, which might result in the personnel’s relief, as the region’s top police of�icial would not allow unprofessionalism and greed for money to destroy their image and dampen “what we have always strived for: to be a better police force, if not the best.”

“Once PRO 11 personnel are found to be involved in the investment scheme, he (Morales) will charge them administra-

tively under his power/ authority,” Baria said in a text message.

Baria said the PRO 11 had not received any complaints against police in the region who invested in the illegal get-rich-quick schemes.

A statement released by the PRO 11 said Morales issued a “stern warning” against the police to prevent being blamed by the public for not taking action against the illegal operations of the investment �irms.

“We will not allow the public to throw stones on us by not doing anything that these illegal operations have gone full-scale,” he said. “Let us not forget our mission and vision that we will continue to serve the community loyally.”

DOE flags illegal LPG-refilling

he Department of Energy (DOE), through its Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) and Visayas Field Of�ice (VFO), met with Lique�ied Petroleum Gas (LPG) suppliers operating in the region last Tuesday (11 June) in a move to further strengthen the Department’s campaign against the proliferation of illegal LPG-re�illing activities, particularly LPG-re�illed butane canisters.

“Butane canisters that have been re�illed with LPG are prohibited primarily because they are extremely dangerous.

These are �ire and explosive hazards. We would like to appeal to the public, especially to our kababayans in the Visayas where this illegal activity has been rampant – don’t risk your lives and those of your children and loved ones. Do not buy these illegally re�illed LPG canisters,” DOE Secretary Al-

fonso G. Cusi emphasized.

DOE – OIMB Assistant Director Rodela I. Romero and VFO Director Jose Rey Maleza, presided over the meeting, where LPG suppliers were briefed on the continuing joint enforcement activities being undertaken by the DOE with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the various local government units (LGUs) concerned.

This includes, among others, the �iling of criminal and administrative cases against those who have been found engaging in the unlawful re�iling of LPG into non-compliant containers, as well as the LGUs' provision of warehouse space for con�iscated illegal items.

ension loan releases of state-run Social Security System (SSS) on Monday hit the P1 billion mark with nearly 42,000 availees since it implemented the Pension Loan Program (PLP) last September 2018.

SSS President and Chief Executive Of�icer Aurora C. Ignacio said while the program has met its objective to provide immediate �inancial assistance to its pensioners for their short-term and emergency needs, she urged pensioners to be vigilant and avoid transacting with “�ixers” for their SSS transactions, especially for the PLP. “We are pleased to note that our pensioners are now relying on SSS for their immediate �inancial needs instead of going to loan sharks. But sad to say, there are people who take advantage of our pensioners during their times of need. This has to stop. And this will only stop if our pensioners will no longer entertain any deal with these individuals who exploit them,” she added.

SSS received an incident report last month from its Bacolod branch that 15 pensioners fell victims to unscrupulous �ixers whose modus operandi was to advance portions of their approved SSS pension loan then ran away with the pensioners’ cash cards. The pensioners �iled a case against the suspects with the National Bureau of Investigation last April 24.

“We urge our retiree-pensioners to be vigilant. Do not transact with non-SSS employees. Those who want to avail of the pension loan must personally apply in our branch of�ices nationwide,” Ignacio said.

Meanwhile, as of 27 May, PLP releases reached

P1.006 billion with 41,926 pensioner-borrowers for the nearly eight-month period of its implementation. SSS started offering PLP in September last year in celebration of its 61st founding anniversary and is set to provide emergency loan assistance for retiree-pensioners.

Data showed that Bacolod branch has the most number of approved loan applications at 2,696 and the highest amount of disbursed pension loan at P56.76 million. This was followed by Diliman branch with 2,177 approved loan applications for P56.09 million amount of pension loan; Cebu branch with 1,547 availees for P38.42 million pension loan releases; and Victorias branch in Bacolod City with 1,733 availees for P36.48 million pension loan.

Further, of the total number of approved loan applications, majority of the pensioners or 92.16 percent preferred to pay their pension loan for 12 months followed by some 6.25 percent who chose to pay within six months while the remaining 1.59 percent opted to pay within a three-month period.

In early March, SSS relaxed its guidelines for more than 1.2 million quali�ied retiree pensioners so that those who are receiving their monthly pension even for just a month and is already posted in the system, is already quali�ied to avail of the SSS pension loan.

Previously, a retiree pensioner must be receiving his monthly pension for at least six months to qualify for the pension loan.

he interest of potential foreign investors to explore their opportunities in the Davao Region is steadily gaining ground.

We are set to see this �irsthand in the upcoming 2019 Davao Investment Conference (ICon) on June 20-21, which is expecting double the number of international delegates than the previous ICon in 2017.

What is Davao ICon? Davao ICon is a biennial event designed to connect the Davao Region to both local and international investors and economic regions.

Organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. (DCCCII), ICon is a two-day event consisting of a business conference, trade exhibition and business-matching event.

This year’s event will be the �ifth installment of Davao ICon, marking an almost decade-long initiative to boost investment in Davao.

The theme this year is “Davao: Your Southeast Asian Investment Destination.”

Indeed, international traders and ambassadors are expected to come all the way from China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The number of foreign delegates is predicted to be twice as many as the conference two years ago.

The previous ICon in 2017 focused on Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Connectivity, and Tourism sectors. But perhaps

many people remember it as the moment Air Asia CEO Anthony Fernandes announced the Davao-Kuala Lumpur direct �light, which was launched with an initial promotional base fare of P99. The Philippine President, Mr. Rodrigo Duterte, also spoke in the 2017 conference.

This year’s conference focuses on investment opportunities in the areas of Halal Trade and Tourism, Infrastructure and Real Estate, IT and Business Process Management, and Tourism, which the DCCCII believes are currently the key areas that can drive employment in the region. Tech support burden on younger generation results in relationship rifts

T

echnology has transformed how we live our lives, but it has come at more than just a �inancial cost for many of us. A new Kaspersky survey has found that more

members to provide free technical support can be a step too far. Whilst more than half of millennials (55%) feel duty-bound to provide on-demand tech support to older relatives, a quarter (25%) say that they actively avoid family members who they think will ask for help.

With half (52%) of over 55s admitting they are not knowledgeable about tech, four-in-ten (41%) phone their children or other younger family members for remote IT support. An astonishing 18% miss their children’s tech support more than their company when they are not around.

And, in their desire to get help from family members, 15% of over 55s have even bribed them for support.

“Not everyone has grown up with technology – and the older generation may therefore not feel as comfortable using it as millennials, or tech natives, do. But we want everyone to enjoy the opportunities that technologies can and do bring to our lives – and we are committed to empowering everyone with the information to do so.

The right knowledge will enable users of all ages to conduct their online activities with con�idence – and look forward to what the future could bring,” explains Alexander Moiseev, Chief Business Of�icer, Kaspersky.

The over-reliance on millennials to be tech support heroes is affecting family relationships, and even their gifting habits.

Nearly a third (30%) avoid buying older family members technology presents, because they know they will be the ones lumbered with having to set it up.

“The dramatic rise of technology within our cars, of�ices and social environments has challenged all generations to continually learn how to bene�it from them. Those in the second half of their lives can �ind the changes overwhelming and often fear being duped, exposed or targeted via them – and it is often millennials who are forced to come to the rescue. Being armed with knowledge may mean we all feel a little less of an existential crisis and a little more attached to our inner Bill Gates,” adds Kathleen Saxton, psychotherapist.

A few good men

George Washington once said: “I hope I shall possess �irmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”

Indeed, honesty in public service has become a rare commodity so much so that when there’s one possessing the quality not many in government have, he is likely to be pulled down by intrigues of the bad eggs in his workplace.

Dr. Roy B. Ferrer, his being a Dabawenyo is merely coincidental, is one of those few good men in government. However, because of the many bad eggs in the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) organization, it is unfortunate that the president and CEO of PhilHealth had to tender his courtesy resignation to clear the way for President Duterte to implement a revamp.

Despite the storm of events at the agency arising from reports of anomalous transactions, Dr. Ferrer’s reputation survived the beating. No less than the President – on television – declared: “I never had reason to doubt the integrity and honesty of PhilHealth president Roy Ferrer.” Philippine Star columnist Domini Torrevilas wrote a touching piece on Dr. Ferrer saying that he “has left a legacy of professional competence, integrity and honor in PhilHealth.”

President Duterte appointed Dr. Ferrer as acting president and CEO of Philhealth on June 5, 2018 replacing a fellow member of the PhilHealth Board. Dr. Ferrer then hit the ground running and immediately ordered a reshuf�le of regional vice presidents to kickstart the cleansing process. He also prepped the newly constituted PhilHealth Board for the passage of the Universal Health Care Law which is aimed at ensuring health services to bene�it 100 percent of the Filipino

To keep PhilHealth �inancially stable, Dr. Ferrer deployed a �ive-point resiliency plan which included strengthened accounts management, premium increase, reasonable bene�it payouts, prudent spending and stronger anti-fraud campaign.

This led to PhilHealth’s net income for 2018 increased by about 4,800 percent when the restated 2017 net income of P237 million ballooned to P11.616 billion in 2018. As of March, PhilHealth has posted a net income of P2.439 billion, an increase of P1.176 billion over March 2018’s P1.263 billion net income. PhilHealth Fund now stands at P127 billion and is expected to be augmented by P17 billion more from PCSO and PAGCOR, as well as by the increase in rates and Sin Tax when the Universal Health Care Act is fully implemented.

To ensure the Fund is protected, Dr. Ferrer has deployed teams for a corporatewide intensive fraud detection and enforcement activities. The hard-nosed PhilHealth CEO is no pushover. He is ready to battle the scallawags in the agency.

Dr. Ferrer has made his agenda clear. His mission at PhilHealth is on point -- that “PhilHealth will move forward with uncommon courage and conviction, to ful�ill the mandate of the Universal Health Care Law, to make a weak-kneed PhilHealth a thing of the past, and to assure a stronger PhilHealth as a present reality.”

Dr. Ferrer is a big loss to the government. He has shown �irmness and virtue enough to maintain the character of an honest man.

But his mission will not die beyond his tenure. Instead, it will be a lasting legacy.

Who knows, he will be back? And that is not surprising considering that the man who appointed him still has full trust on his leadership.

WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE TO BE LAZY I can understand the huge public outcry created by the presidential directive to go after KAPA and other investment groups proliferating in the Davao area as well as proliferating strategies in Gen. Santos City, Tagum City and other nearby localities.

People – and families – who have placed hard-earned cash into these “it’s good to be true” investment schemes as described no less than Pres.

Duterte are now the victims rather than the bene�iciaries.

The guys behind these GRQS (get-rich-quickschemes) are suddenly out of sight and may have “disappeared’ for a while to avoid teams of arresting authorities.

It is a natural reaction when a seemingly legit operation is disturbed. Like rats, they desert a sinking ship.

From many lips, I have heard verbal testimonies of how they were able to get back their investments and how KAPA and other invest-

ment groups kept their word and faithfully, according to the signed bene�its in the “donation” form.

Early entrants – in a networking formula – are always the FIRST receivers of the huge bene�its because they automatically become advertisers of the product that needed testimonials to make it credible to the “still wondering” public.

GRQS proliferate because they are slyly able to get around the SEC laws governing their activities. This is quite amusing to me so that I �ind it necessary that a Senate (in aid of legislation) hearing be immediately conducted to determine if there are any loopholes in the SEC statute and to expose who the people are behind these GRQS. A religious ministry, as it should ideally be, must only engage in the spiritual upliftment and religious nutrition of its �lock. Pastors and priests should therefore not be in the ministry for money, fame

and popularity. This is a part of Christ’s teachings that are found in the Holy Book.

As we have now unfortunately witnessed, the poor citizens who patronized these GRQS and those who were lured later on to put in bigger sums of money are demanding, in a sort of collective voice that the government allow these wily persons to continue their operations because many poor are being bene�itted that which they cannot get huge returns as these from legitimate �inancial institutions like banks, pension and mutual funds, insurance, etc.

This is precisely the reason why PRRD moved to quell a fantastic fairy tale of a scam to prevent more innocent and ignorant persons from getting enamored, lured and fraudulently deceived by groups masquerading under the guise of a generous benefactor.

That no one is complaining does not necessarily mean these guys behind the GRQS

are not guilty of violating any law or the provisions of the SEC �iat. That the SEC issued a cease and desist order with the DILG as the implementing agency, warning all LGUS not to issue business permits to any and such networking formula, is already a pro-active move from the government to protect unsuspecting but willing-to-risk-it-all ordinary Filipinos.

Hoping to make a quick buck under any and all circumstances has become the order of the day, has it not?

This prevailing attitude is not good because a nation that likes to thrive on GRQS is a nation of lazy people and leeches.

Just how many billions of donations have been locked in cannot quanti�ied at this moment until all documents have been surrendered, collected and collated.

Industry, perseverance, patience, honesty and creativity are just �ive of the qualities

people need to possess in order to be outstandingly successful.

Laziness, over-dependence on government doleouts, mendicancy and all other negative traits that suffocate and prevent people from getting out of the crowd are what I see prevailing in our society.

The C, D and E economic classes are targets of GRQS because they need so much money badly to provide food on the table three times a day, have a roof above their heads, clothes for their bodies and education for their children.

Contributing to this malady is the recent legislation of the 4Ps into law which, to me, is an act that would slowly but surely transform our Third Word status as a welfare state.

Can we afford this?

AN ACT OF DECEPTION “In every age, it has been the tyrant, the oppressor and the exploiter who has wrapped himself in the cloak of patriotism, or religion, or both to deceive and overawe the people.” – Eugene Victor Debs in a speech delivered on June 16, 1918 *** Trickery, sham, and dishonesty – what do these words have one thing in common? Before answering the question, allow me to share the story below: A veteran supervisor for a building �irm was getting more and more irate about building mansions for the rich. So, on this particular job, he cut a lot of corners, intending by haphazard work to embarrass the owner of the house, as one thing after another would fall apart within a few years. He used rotten wood, cheap paint, wires which were too thin, wrong cement mixtures, rusty waterpipes, and crooked timber.

About the time the house was �inished, this supervisor was just �inishing his building career. He was retiring, being pensioned off. So, the company had a small celebration for him and told him that as a parting gift of gratitude, it was giving him the keys to the

grand mansion which he had just built.

Now, you get the point, right? If you still haven’t an idea, then read this second story, told by Aesop: An old lady who had become blind called in a doctor and promised him in the presence of witnesses that if he would restore her sight, she would pay him handsomely; but if he failed, he would get nothing at all.

The terms were agreed; the doctor called at regular intervals, tampered with the old lady’s eyes, and meanwhile carried off her good and furniture bit by bit. After some while, he set to work with all his skill and actually cured her. Then, of course, he asked for his fee.

But when the lady recovered her sight, she found the house stripped from top to bottom. So, every time the doctor repeated his demand for his fee, she made some excuse to avoid payments.

Eventually, however, he took her to court, and this is what she told the judge: “The man is quite right. I did promise him a fee if he gave me back my sight, but nothing otherwise. Now, he says I’m cured, but I just say the opposite. When I started to go blind,

I could see all sorts of furniture and other things in my house; but now, when he claims to have restored my sight, I can see nothing of them.”

Deception – that’s what this all about. The Cambridge Dictionary de�ines it as “the act of hiding the truth, especially to get an advantage.” It also means “a statement or action that hides the truth, or the act of hiding the truth.” It can also mean “dishonest or illegal methods that are used to get something, or to make people believe that something is true when it is not.”

Deception comes in different forms. Wikipedia lists six forms. The top three are lies (“making up information or giving information that is the opposite or very different from the truth”), equivocations (“making an indirect, ambiguous, or contradictory statement”) and concealments (“omitting information that is important or relevant to the given context, or engaging in behavior that helps hide relevant information”).

The three remaining forms are exaggerations (“overstatement or stretching the truth to a degree”), understatements (“minimization or downplaying aspects of the truth”), and untruthful (“also known as

misinterpreting the truth”).

When it comes to government, the term “deception” is typically frowned except if it is used in military operations. According to Wikipedia, the terms used by governments when the employ deception are: subterfuge (“in the case of disguise and disguised movement”), secrecy (“in the forti�ication of communications and in the forti�ied concealing of documents”), and misinformation (“uncon�ined to criminal investigations”).

In the past, “propaganda” was used. This was somewhat controversial label for what governments produce in the way of controlled information and message in media documents and communications. These days, the popular term is “fake news.” In criminal investigations, it is used in the delivery of information to the public or the deliberate transformation of certain key details.

“Deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance,” Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde once wrote. English writer Samuel Johnson sees it otherwise. “Don’t tell me of deception,” he pointed out, “a lie is a lie, whether it be a lie to the eye or a lie to the ear.”

Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, used another term. “Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools, that don’t have brains enough to be honest.” If you are the receiving end, don’t be fooled twice. As one saying puts it: “He fooled you once, shame on him. He fooled you twice, shame on you.”

American President Abraham Lincoln has given us one of the most often quoted statement to those who are trying to deceive people: “You can fool some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.”

Danish philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard said, “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.”

This bring us to the subject of fraud. In The Great California Game, Jonathan Gash wrote: “Fraud is the daughter of greed.” Again, here’s Samuel Johnson: “Whoever commits a fraud is guilty not only of the particular injury to him who deceives, but of the diminution of that con�idence which constitutes not only the ease but the existence of society.”

ompostela Valley province--- Children on their worn-out slippers, some barefooted, lined up in front of the �lagpole. Their parents, the community, local of�icials and government agency representatives, and private sector also stood straight on the side.

Their right hands pressed �irmly on their left, as they sing together the Philippine national anthem while the �lag was hoisted up. Thus, the �irst �lag ceremony was held at the newly built classroom in Sitio Puting Bato in Brgy.

Sitio Puting Bato is the farthest sitio in the municipality and home to mostly Dibabawon tribe with about 77 households.

“Nakahilak ko mam, di ko katuo naa na mi eskuwelahan diring dapita,” (I can’t help but cry, I can’t believe we will now have a school) 30-year old Crisadel Adlawan said, as she wiped away a tear after the �lag ceremony. Crisadel has all the reasons to be thankful for. Every Sunday afternoon, she and her 3 children had to walk for about 3-4 hours just to reach a makeshift house they had requested to occupy freely in the nearest school, Bango Public Ele-

mentary School. By Friday afternoon, it is another arduous walk back to their home in Sitio Puting Bato.

“Matag Sabado ug Domingo ra gyud ko maka atiman sa among gamayng uma kay kinahanglan man nako mubantay sa mga bata,” (It is only every Saturday and Sunday that I get to tend to our small farm as I need to be with my kids) Cisadel said. She added that she was willing to sacri�ice the long distance rather than send her children to the left-leaning Salugpungan school located in their sitio.

Meanwhile, another con�lict-affected and geographically isolated and depressed area (GIDA) in Compostela also had their new one-unit, 2 classroom-building turned over at Sitio Side 4 in Brgy.

Chairman Uraya Mansayloan, speaking on behalf of the dominant tribe, Matigsalog-Manobo, is thankful and hopeful that with the new classroom building, this will inspire them to have their own future teachers, engineers,

doctors, and other professions to come from their community.

THE TRUTH THAT DIGITAL NOMADS DON’T TELL YOU

Part 2

HERE’S THE CONTINUATION from last week’s series of the lowdown on being a digital nomad from a developing country in this day and age.

WHY I WENT REMOTE Two significant factors made me decide to jump to the remote world altogether. The first was my desire to focus on my writing as a livelihood and second, was the availability to chase after waves in whatever part of the country or world.

I was blessed enough to have a network in the world of remote work already. The shift wasn’t too tricky, and I was blessed to have great employers who weren’t cheapskates.

They were fair and indeed weren’t out there to get the highest quality of service at the cheapest cost. I know some aren’t as generous and others are desperate for a job, they’d take it.

The greatest lesson that I’ve learned and still am learning to have is the value of having self-discipline. It’s having the internal compass of knowing when to work, stop, and when to take a break. Notice that I didn’t say just when to stop and when to start working, there’s

an equally important aspect to learning when to take breaks in between projects.

Creative work, like nearly almost any other work, can be cumbersome and draining to the mind. Sometimes you feel like coming from a mental boot camp that at the end of the day, you’re just spent and can’t think of anything smart to write about.

It’s essential to know when to start your day (so you can get actual work done) and when to take a break to refresh.

It took me a long time to learn when to call it a day and resume work the next day, or the next.

I’ve learned to adjust my itinerary depending on the deadlines I needed to meet.

Sometimes, I have to cut my surfing short to ensure I meet deadlines, other times, I have to surf first to I get my brain

working.

It takes a while to learn about your productivity levels and the motivating factors behind it. Also, it helps to know how long it takes you to do a particular task so you can estimate better.

Believe me, it took me eight months to fully adjust to remote work. I felt I couldn’t get anything right. I kept working despite the doubt until I felt peace and contentment. I had learned the value of appreciating my work and where I am— priceless if you ask me!

This is the invaluable lesson I would never have learned if I stayed in corporate. I’d always have to force myself to work as long as I’m in the office and as long as it’s office hours. Nowadays, there are some corporations and awesome bosses that allow you to take a creative break and just come back when you’re refreshed and ready to work again.

In my opinion, nothing beats having control over your time and productivity. There are a lot of risks with going remote which I’ll discuss in the later part of this series.

BECOMING A DIGITAL NOMAD FROM A DEVELOPING COUNTRY

If not all jobs are created equal then, not all workers are made equal either. We can debate on that statement in the comments, but for me, this is a reality I’ve learned to accept.

There are countries where their currency has much more power than mine. That’s just how life goes.

So the earning power of a digital nomad or a remote worker depends also on the average market rates for the services they are paid to do.

I don’t want to make it that complicated with numbers and exchange rates, but the Philippines has one of the lowest costs for labor () in the world.

It may differ from profession to profession, but this fact naturally makes sense for those looking to get a dedicated and hardworking worker with great English-speaking (and writing) skills. eynaldo Hiligan, in his social media account, begged President Rodrigo R. Duterte about the situation of the price of copra. “Our beloved president. We hope you give coconut farmers some justice regarding the price of copra. It’s only P2.30 for the whole price of a coconut.”

A teacher from Davao shared the post and commented: “The price of copra is very cheap but the coconut oil is expensive. What is the Department of Agriculture doing? When will it be able to help the thousands of coconut farmers in the Philippines?”

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), the government’s agency tasked for the coconut industry, wrote in its website: “The �luctuation of domestic copra market is cyclical and this is beyond the control of the PCA or any government agency. This is because the domestic copra price is dependent to the coconut oil price in the global market.

“The global coconut oil price, on the other hand, is determined or affected by the supply and demand situation of other vegetable oils (that is, oil palm, soybean, rapeseed, sun�lower, olive oil, etc.) in the international market,” PCA continued.

“Though the Philippines is the biggest exporter of coconut oil in the world, coconut oil is just one of the many vegetable oils produced globally. As such, its price is greatly affected by the movement of prices of other vegetable oils particularly the palm oil which is the biggest among the internationally-traded vegetable oils (35%) and soybean oil, the second biggest vegetable oil (29%).”

Since December 2017, the price of palm oil in the world market has been going down. This explains the very low price of copra as companies in the international market using vegetable oils buy more palm oil as the supply is high and the price is low. “But if the supply of palm oil goes down,” PCA said, “prices of vegetable oils (including coconut) will again go up.”

Though copra price �luctuation is beyond the control of the government, it is very much aware of its impact to the coconut farmers. This is the reason why the Department of Agriculture has been trying to �ind some possible solution to the problem. One of these is �inding other products from coconut that can exported to other countries.

Coconut water – also known as buko juice or coco water – as one of the products that has high potential abroad. It must be recalled that during the presidency of Benigno Aquino III, he hailed coco water as one of the country’s most promising new export opportunities “Drinking what they call coco water, and what we call buko juice, is a growing trend in the US,” Aquino told the press when he returned from a working visit to the United States. “Because of its nutrients, because it is natural and environment friendly, it is becoming the new natural sports drink in America and is now a hundred-million-dollar industry.”

During the Palarong Pambansa held in Davao City recently, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol launched buko juice as “the of�icial energy drink” of the athletes coming from all over the country.

MAJOR EXPORT CROP OF FILIPINO FARMERS

“Coconut water is considered a sports drink because it contains many nutrients lost in physical exertion and sweating,” Susan Ferrandino points out in an article published in Livestrong.com.

“It is marketed as an isotonic beverage, which means that concentration levels of nutrients are the same as in human blood. As a result, coconut water is absorbed readily into the body and can prevent dehydration after a workout.”

That’s going aheaw of the story, however. Let’s take a closer look at it. “One cup of coconut water contains 46 calories,” writes Rebecca Slayton for Livestong.com.

“Carbohydrates make up the majority of the calorie content, with 8.9 grams per onecup serving, of which 6.26 grams are from sugar.”

Coconut water is a good source of the electrolyte potassium, and provides 600 milligrams per one-cup serving. This is the reason why it’s good for those engaged in sports to drink coconut water. “Normal potassium levels are necessary for regular cell function,” Slayton writes.

“When potassium levels drop too low, it affects your nervous system and can lead to an irregular heartbeat, which can be fatal.”

But it’s not only because of potassium why it’s a good sports drink. “Coconut water also contains 252 milligrams per serving of sodium, which is another electrolyte lost during exercise through sweat,” Slayton claims. “Sodium plays a role in your critical body functions by regulating the movement of water in and out of your cells.”

Coconut water is indeed a perfect sports drink. “The potassium and sodium con-

tent found in coconut water make it a smart choice when you become dehydrated, whether from physical activity or sickness when you are experiencing diarrhea or vomiting.”

But that’s not all. “Coconut water offers a good source of vitamins making it a nutritious drink option,” Slayton writes. “One serving of coconut water provides 5.8 milligrams of vitamin C, along with folate, ribo�lavin, thiamin, niacin and vitamin B6. Coconut water also provides other key minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.”

Despite the marketing hype, coconut water does have a few medical uses. For those with hypertension, it can be drunk to lower blood pressure. A study reported

by The West Indian Medical Journal said coconut water was able to lower the systolic pressure by 71% and diastolic pressure by 29%.

While coconut water may support healthy blood pressure levels, it should not be used as replacement for blood pressure medications or potassium prescribed by your physicians, Ferrandino reminds.

People who want to lose weight may drink coconut water instead of soft drinks and other sweet beverages.

Jessica Hendricks, in another Livestrong.com feature, writes: “Drinking coconut water in place of a high-calorie drink can help you lose weight over time because you’ll be consuming fewer calories in total.”

It is suggested that you drink coconut water straight from newly harvest coconuts. Some commercially produced coconut water drinks may include added

sugar, which can further raise the sugar level. The American Heart Association said that a diet high in sugar can increase your chance of weight gain and obesity.

Another good thing about coconut water is its ability to combat cholesterol. There was an animal study on the bene�its of coconut water and cholesterol levels which was published in Journal of Medicinal Food in 2006.

“Scientists found that rats fed coconut water at a ratio of 4 millimeters per day per 100 grams of body weight showed lower overall ‘bad’ cholesterol levels, namely low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides,” Hendricks reported. “In turn, the rats’ healthy or ‘good’ cholesterol – high-density lipoprotein – increased on coconut water diet.”

Among Filipinos, drinking coconut water is highly recommended for those suffering from urinary tract infections. As a natural diuretic, coconut water – along with antibiotics – helps �lush out bacteria from the urinary tract.

In his book, Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut, Dr. Bruce Fife claims coconut water makes kidney stones less likely to form and even helps �lush existing ones out.

A study conducted at the Philippine General Hospital on patients with kidney and urethral stone problems, Fife reports, showed improvement when they started a regular intake of coconut water.

Beauty conscious ladies may �ind a partner in coconut water. Ivana Saragjinova, in an article published in oldnaturalcures.com, shares

this information: “Coconut water does not contain omega-3 fatty acids but it is rich in saturated acids that help to strengthen the skin. It is therefore, a great ally of beauty. It helps stimulate the production of collagen, which is responsible for the elasticity of the skin, and whose function weakens with age. That’s why coconut water is great in �ighting wrinkles, stretch marks, stains on the skin, lip care, and extracting make-up.”

Diabetics can also bene�it from drinking coconut water. The PCA shares this bit of information: “Potassium content of water is remarkably high at all nut ages.

Together with sodium and phosphorus, potassium content also tends to increase with the ages of the coconut to peak at nine months. This characteristic of coconut water makes it a very good drinking water for diabetics. Diabetics waking from a coma recover quickly after drinking coconut water.”

Drink moderately, most health professionals urge.

This goes true, too, when it comes to coconut water. “The high potassium level of coconut water can cause hyperkalemia, or too much potassium in the blood,” writes Kirsten Braun for the website of Women’s Health Queensland Wide, Inc. “Hyperkalemia can lead to changes in heart rhythm which can be fatal. People with heart conditions or kidney diseases need to be particularly careful about the amount of coconut water they consume. Similarly, older people should also be cautious because as we age, our kidneys become less ef�icient at removing potassium from the blood.” (To be continued)

ispelling rumors, Equestrian Association of the Philippines (EAP) President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco yesterday bluntly expressed disinterest in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) presidency, saying he has done enough for the council which should now be led by younger and more dynamic leaders.

Cojuangco made the statement before some members of the POC Board which has called for an executive meeting with POC President Victorico “Ricky” Vargas, the boxing association president who is under �ire from the majority of the national sports associations for what was termed as a “mishandling” of the POC's role in the preparations for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

The Games are set from November 30 to December 10 in various venues in Metro Manila, Clark and Subic. But the preparations have hardly moved as the POC majority is questioning Vargas' role in the Phisgoc Foundation, a separate body incorporated by Vargas without approval from the POC Board.

The Phisgoc Foundation is different from the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) formed for the hosting with the earlier approval of the POC Board, then led

by Cojuangco as POC President, before he was defeated by Vargas in a court-ordered election last March 5, 2018.

The Phisgoc and the Phisgoc Foundation are both led by Taguig Congressman-elect Alan Peter Cayetano.

Vargas has accepted by the call by the POC Board to an executive meeting on Tuesday at the Council of�ice at the Philsports complex where he is expected to be questioned about the deals he had entered into on behalf of the Phisgoc Foundation but without the

approval of his board.

Among the issues to be tackled are the expenses he had made and contracts he had executed in partnership with Cayetano's Phisgoc Foundation team which the POC Board feels have caused damage to the Council.

Cojuangco, however, said the meeting is not a power grab as it was earlier �loated by the minority of�icials supporting Vargas.

“My name was always mentioned, but I am not interested in the POC presidency. I have done my part in sports and we have contributed enough, including the Philippines �irst and only overall championship in the SEA Games when we last hosted the Games in 2005,” Cojuangco said in the presence of archery association president Clint Aranas, wushu federation secretary general and POC treasurer Julian Camacho and Steve Hontiveros, a non-POC board member but an old hand in the local Olympic affairs.

“In fact, I am very supportive of Mr. Vargas,” Cojuangco said. “I met him several times since his election, shared with him my institutional knowledge and experiences and tried to guide him on issues. But I am being excluded from of�icial SEA Games Federation affairs hosted locally for the Games. Although the Federation members apprised me of what transpired because they came to my house right after the events. But still, I am supporting the SEA Games but everything has to be in order.”

“And no, I am not seeking to oust Mr. Vargas. I am supportive of him. Everything has to be with the full of agreement of the POC Board, though, as provided by our rules and by-laws.”

Vargas seems to be in agreement to the Board's demand, though, as he promised to attend the

fter disposing off tough Bolivian Saul Farah in Saturday night’s Thrilla In Davao, newly-crowned Global Boxing’s Organization (GBO) heavyweight champion Ron Johnson has called out WBA heavyweight titlist Andy Ruiz.

Nicknamed “The American Dream”, Johnson said he is ready to face theMexican champion Ruiz who scored an upset win over erstwhile undefeated heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua recently.

To the delight of the boxing crowd that included former Sen. Bongbong Marcos, Johnson taught Farah some neat boxing lessons to claim the GBO heavyweight title at the Azuela Cove in Lanang, Davao City.

Johnson, a native of Cleveland, Ohio �ighting out of Las Vegas, knocked Farah twice down in the very �irst round but the tough Latino heavyweight titlist,

aka “The Phoenix Assassin,” rose to his feet at the count of eight in both occasions to prevent himself from getting kayoed.

“Saul is a great warrior… very tough, he deserves my respect,” said Johnson, the former three-belt owner of the World Boxing Federation who earlier boasted to take his opponent in two rounds.

Farah also delivered clean shots but these were few and far in between.

Once, he hit Johnson with a right hook that rocked the stylish American. He had dif�iculty adjusting against Johnson’s weaving in and out whose jarring left jabs and right straights found their marks.

“I like the action. All three championship �ights were exciting, especially the heavyweight �ight… maganda, maganda” exclaimed Marcos who �lew all the way to Davao from Manila despite a rainy

weather.

The former senator was kept company by GAB chair Abraham Mitra, commissioners Mar Masanguid and Ed Trinidad, former Congressman Anton Lagdameo and Los Angeles-based lawyer James Bang. He reminded those around him of the 1975 Thrilla in Manila when asked for his comments.

Farah, in his halting English, said: “Two rounds, he (Johnson) not get me,” with two �ingers as a mocking gesture that Johnson’s boast of taking him out in two was nothing but hot air.

Johnson approached Farah in his corner and embraced him for his spartan attitude. The new GBO heavyweight king now sports a 16 win-0 loss-0 draw- personal tally while the Bolivian hombre has 63 wins, 24 losses and 3 draws in 96 outings.

erstwhile undefeated Ifugao boxer Roy Nagulman lost by unanimous decision to Aries Buenavidez for the GBO Asia Paci�ic bantamweight diadem while fellow Ifugao stablemate KJ Natuplag fell to Joe Tejones of Wowie Lalanto Stable via a close split decision for the GBO Asia Paci�ic Jr. lightweight crown.

Promoter Rey Rodis of RED Boxing Int’l thanked the City of Davao, particularly Mayor Sara Duterte and her staff, for the assistance the city government extended to the boxing promotion.

fter a break, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) revives its Laro't Saya sa Parke (LSP) program in Tagum City and Davao City this weekend.

Lilian Nieva, secretary of PSC chairman William "Butch" Ramirez, said the LSP in Tagum City was held at the Rotary Park yesterday, June 15, featuring 10 events. This included zumba, arnis, athletics, boxing, taekwondo, volleyball, gymnastics, frisbee, wushu and basketball.

Nieva said, "The LSP in Tagum will be held every Saturday morning while it will be on Sundays in Davao City at the People's Park."

Davao City's edition will resume on Father's Day set today, June 16, with zumba, taekwondo, Muay Thai, wushu

and karatedo as focused events.

Laro’t Saya Sa Parke is a park-based and family-oriented sports-forall program designed as a national campaign to draw the Filipino families into playing and learning sports together. This was inspired by PSC's mandate to craft "sports for all" programs by virtue of Section 6-A of Republic Act 6847.

Chairman Ramirez, during last December's culmination activity at People's Park, vowed to bring the LSP in Davao City, saying that it is the agency's mandate to create a healthy and vibrant citizenry.

In Davao alone, thousands of senior citizens, middle-aged, young professionals and youth have already bene�itted from the program.
