he Davao City Ancillary Service Unit (ASU) has called on all sidewalk vendors to clear sidewalks, especially near schools to keep children safe from road accidents.

ASU chief Paul Bermejo said the city demolition team have been closely monitoring sidewalks in the city since the school opening when sidewalk vendors proliferate selling school supplies, toys, and food.

Bermejo said the City Administrator’s Of�ice has instructed the demolition team to clear all sidewalks of vendors to provide students and the general public easy and unhampered access to their destination.

“The City Administrator’s Of�ice instructed us to clear the City Hall, the areas around the Sanggu-

niang Panlungsod, schools, churches, and all public areas. Only vendors who were already regulated and pro�iled by our of�ice can stay on the sidewalks,” he said.

The city government has only allowed vendors to use sidewalks provided they observe the 1/3 -2/3 policy. The 2/3 should be the space for the people.

He said two demolition teams will work in shifts to monitor and tear down structures or con�iscate items that transgress pathways.

“They are not allowed to stay there (pathways), especially if they will leave their things on the sidewalk. If we will apprehend them for the third time, we will really con�iscate their items, we will no longer return it to them,” he said. CIO

responding to the incident. He said that a corresponding recognition will be given to them.

The 2202nd RRIBDe is now based in its new HQ at the Magsaysay Park, in a space provided by Mayor Sara Duterte, who is also a reserve colonel in the Philippine Army.

The 2202nd RRIB has two battalions, namely: the 1105th and the 1102nd Ready Reserve Infantry Battalions. It is under the operational control of the 11th Regional Community Defense Group (RCDG).

he Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), on Saturday night slammed some United Nations rapporteurs as biased over their fresh calls for an independent probe on the human rights situation in Manila.

“We reject this call as it is being made in bad faith by parties who want to undermine domestic processes and spread disinformation, on the basis of one-sided reports coming from questionable sources,” the DFA said in a statement through Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Fernandez.

The agency said this action indicates the refusal of these parties to engage “in true dialogue”.

“By ignoring the accountability and other information provided by the Philippines in good faith, these parties show their bias and political agenda

and assail the credibility and objectivity of the human rights mechanisms as constructive platforms of dialogue between the United Nations and the member states,” it pointed out.

On Friday, 11 independent experts, including UN rapporteur Agnes Callamard, accused the Philippine government of “sustained attack on people and institutions defending human rights.”

Citing this, they called on the UN Human Rights Council to establish an independent investigation on this alleged violation.

In its statement, the DFA belied these claims saying the Philippines is “a democratic nation with strong institutions and the government has an unshakeable determination to promote and protect the human rights of every Filipino.”

The Taiwan Fellowship, sponsored by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), seeks to produce researches related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, China, Asia-Paci�ic region, Sinology, Taiwan’s participation in regional economic integration, the New Southbound Policy, Asia-Paci�ic regional security, and countermeasures against disinformation and gender studies.

The online application for Filipinos started on May 1. The recipients will undertake their research in Taiwan from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.

The MOFA will sponsor the recipients with month-

ly grants paid at the beginning of each month.

For professor, associate professor, research fellow, or associate research fellow, the �inancial assistance is worth around NT60,000, or about PHP100,000.

While for assistant professor, assistant research fellow, or doctoral candidate, the grant is worth NT50,000, or around PHP84,000.

One round-trip air-ticket will also be shouldered by the MOFA, including accident insurance coverage.

he Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) needs the industry's help to leverage technical and vocational education and training's (TVET) image, an of�icial said.

"Would a parent want his/her child to be a mechanic? Many people see tech-voc as a second-class course," TESDA deputy director general, Rosanna Urdaneta, said at the sidelines of the One Step Ahead Forum in Makati City.

She said people have this mindset because techvoc jobs usually offer a low salary.

"If the salary could be leveled to that of a lawyer or a nurse, then maybe the parents would push their kids (to take tech-voc)," Urdaneta said.

"We need the industry to help us in this effort," she added.

TESDA data show that aqua-farm cultivators earn an average monthly salary of PHP7,823 while pow-

erplant operators receive an average of PHP30,887 monthly pay.

Earlier, Luz Victoria Amponin, executive director of TESDA’s Partnerships and Linkages Of�ice, said the TESDA has been eyeing to partner with more industries.

She said the kind of assistance that TESDA gets from industry partners depends on the agreement and the agencies' capabilities.

Some companies provide scholarships, others donate a building, while others share their facilities.

Others get TESDA's trainees as their interns, to expose them to their hightech machines, while some eventually hire them.

The forum's organizer, a multinational bank, J.P. Morgan, is among TESDA's partner industries, Urdaneta said.

atar Airways has announced that it will be opening the Doha-Davao route starting next week.

Qatar Airways becomes the 11th airline to �ly to Davao and the fourth international carrier to do so after XiamenAir, Cathay Dragon and SilkAir. In an announcement on its website, the state-owned airline said passengers �lying to Doha from Davao can start purchasing their tickets at the special launch price of just USD750 (about PHP38,921.25).

June 18. It will service the route once a week.

The airline said travelers �lying from Davao to Doha can easily �ly to about 160 other destinations worldwide.

EDITORIAL Exploitation of poverty and ignorance “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” This quote is from John Quincy Adams and it speaks well of what leaders are to his people. The unspoken side of this quote is the responsibility of the leader to tell his people to stop when it is no longer doing them any good, especially when he knows it.

Amidst the stern, clear and unambiguous statement of President Rodrigo Duterte to shut down all so-called investment scheme operators and organizations--whether religious or business--there is the incumbent responsibility upon leaders of organizations involve din this fraudulent scheme to have the temerity to accept its frailties and fallacies for the good of its members.

Organizations offering investment schemes with astronomic returns like Kapa and Rigen should accept the fact that the end of the line has come for them and caught up with them. It’s the natural course of what is advertised clearly, and accepted willingly by the risk-taking ‘investors’ from the very beginning. They took the risk, they must learn to accept

when the perceived risk has come.

It is best for leaders of these organizations and establishments, instead of giving false hopes to people, to take the hard reality that the craze is over. There are laws that have been violated by its continued operations and we cannot encourage people to believe that laws can be circumvented all because it has worked pro�itably for some. People’s impoverished state should not be made as a rallying point to make illegal as legal because this scheme is not even about stealing from the rich to give to the poor. In the bigger scope of things, it is actually stealing from the poor to enrich the schemers.

This is not about one religious congregation against another as being ampli�ied by Kapa against the congregation of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy who interviewed the President where he made the statement on Saturday. This is about violations of the law and exploitation of poverty and ignorance. There is a time to pro�it, but there is also a time to lose and let go.

BEAT AIR POLLUTION For more than �ive years now, Daniel has been driving a jeepney in the city. Recently, he has been coughing hard and is losing weight. In the afternoon, he has mild fever and is sweating at night. One bleak Wednesday, upon the prodding of his wife, he decided to see a doctor. The diagnosis: he has tuberculosis (TB).

Carlos was a healthy baby when he was growing up in a small town in Bansalan, Davao del Sur. When his father was promoted as a manager in a company where he is working, the family moved to Davao City. Two years after their arrival in the metropolis, Carlos developed asthma – much to the surprise of his parents.

The two anecdotes bring us to this year’s World Environment Day theme: “Beat Air Pollution.”

“This theme is very relevant, now more than ever, given that the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has reported that the most dominant causes of air pollution in the region’s rural areas is biomass burning; and in urban areas, vehicle and industrial emissions,” said Dr. Theresa Mundita S. Lim, the executive director of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.

The Geneva-based World

Health Organization (WHO) estimated that indoor air pollution among the members of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) caused more than 376,000 premature deaths; while outdoor air pollution was estimated to cause more than 149,000 premature deaths annually.

“Humans rely on the planet’s rich biodiversity and ecosystems: they are the source of our air, water and food; raw materials for medicine and shelter; and natural capital for businesses and industries,” said Dr. Lim in a press statement obtained

by EDGE Davao. “But this richness is threatened by pollution, one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss and ecosystems degradation.”

The Nairobi-based UNEP has identi�ied �ive major sources of air pollution: households, industries, transport, agriculture, and wastes.

Dr. Lim explained that household air pollution comes from the indoor burning of fossil fuels, wood and other biomass-based fuels for cooking, heating and lighting homes.

She cited a UNEP report which said that the global transport sector accounts for almost one quarter of energy-related

carbon dioxide emissions. Transport emissions have been linked to nearly 400,000 premature deaths.

Agriculture, on the other hand, has two major contributors to air pollution: livestock, which produces methane and ammonia, and the burning of agricultural waste. “Around 24% of all greenhouse gases emitted worldwide come from agriculture, forestry and other landuse,” Dr. Lim said.

Open waste burning and organic waste in land�ills release harmful dioxins, methane, furans, and black carbon into the atmosphere. According to UNEP, an estimated 40% percent of waste is openly burned.

Nine out of 10 people worldwide are exposed to levels of air pollutants that exceed safe levels, the United Nations health agency points out. “Thus, air pollution also contributes to health risks, aside from triggering global warming, biodiversity loss, and degradation of ecosystems,” Dr. Lim stressed.

Science tells us that many air pollutants – a mix of gases, droplets, and particles – are able to pass through the lungs into the bloodstream and are eventually transported to the heart and the entire body through blood ves-

sels.

“Because the cardiovascular system is dependent on the functioning of the respiratory system, it is also indirectly affected by the deleterious effects of the pollution on the lungs,” the WHO said.

A study published in Lancet showed that those living near a major road have a higher risk of dying than the rest of the population. It concluded that long-term exposure to traf�ic-released air pollution may shorten life expectancy.

Other studies also revealed that heart attacks, life-threatening heart rhythms, and thickening of the blood can also be traced to exposure to air pollution.

Perhaps not too many know that air pollution is tied to high blood pressure in pregnancy. Statistics showed that women develop high blood pressure during about one in ten pregnancies. Having so-called gestational hypertension makes it more likely that a woman will need a cesarean section, that she will give birth early and that her baby will be born small.

“Our results suggest air pollution does have some impact on the risk of gestational hypertension,” said epidemiologist Dr. Xiaohui Xu, who led the study at the University of Florida in

Gainesville. “This could have some subsequent effects on both maternal and fetal health.”

According to Dr. Lim, most causes of air pollution come from human activities. “But humans can also be the solution to this global problem,” she said.

For instance, “industries can put in place technologies that will reduce the release of air pollutants from their operations.

They can spearhead and mobilize their company personnel and even the public to plant native and appropriate vegetation in their surrounding areas that will help absorb carbon, and reduce air-borne and respiratory problems in nearby communities.”

On transportation, Dr. Lim suggested: “The public can be encouraged to use alternative means of transport such as bicycles, skate boards or scooters, to reach closer destinations, and to call for dedicated lanes to be set up for the purpose.

More suggestion: “The practice of reducing, reusing, and recycling of waste can also start at home. Waste segregation can reduce the volume of residual waste, and methane emission from saturated land�ills.”

THE SEA-STARS OF PADADA BEACH Padada Beach is a coastal region on southeastern Mindanao, in the gulf of Davao. It’s a seaside area where an assortment of seastars was collected by Dr. Willard Gibbs Van Name and Godfred R. Oesch in 1936-37.

Arthur H. Clark, in a paper delivered on April 27, 1949 and later included in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (USA) of the Smithsonian Institution (Vol. 62, 73-78), said the �irst dredge hauls of sea-stars from Davao Gulf, most of them taken from shallow shoreline waters were made on May 18, 1908, on board the steamer Albatross.

The Oesch-Name collection was later submitted by the American Museum of Natural History to Clark for study.

American zoologist-biologist Dr. Walter K.endrick Fisher, in 1919 memoir, listed some of the sea-stars collected from the 1908 expedition. Gathered from depths ranging from 18 to 28 fathoms, the specimens included the Protoeaster nodosus, Pentaceraster alveolatus, Fromia japonica, Nardoa squamulose, Ophidiaster fuscus, Othila luzonica, and Retaster inisgnis.

The early collection was a trove of littoral sea-stars but

“without de�inite locality [on the place where the specimens were collected] or other data.” Nearly three decades later, an annotated list of species was updated to included new discoveries.

More than �ive specimens of Archaster typicus Muller and Troschel, species Archasteridae, were collected from Padada Beach and the mouth of Padada River by Oesch. A specimen of Goniodiscaster for�iculatus (Perrier), species Gobiasteridae, was also found in Padada River, near Mangrove Island on June 20, 1936; Two specimens of Protoreaster nodosus (Linne), species Oreasteridae, were found near Mangrove Island, adjacent to Paloda River, by Dr. Name on November 7, 1937. Twenty-two specimens of Nardoa tuberculate Gray were amassed at Padada Beach by Oesch in May-June 20, 1936. Five specimens were found at Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, by Dr. Name on November 21, 1973.

Twenty specimens of Linckia laevigata (Linne), species Linckiidae, were gathered at Padada Beach by Oesch in March-July 1936 and another four specimens by Dr. Name from the reef

of Digos. Another specimen was taken by Dr. Name north of Paloda River, near Mangrove Island.

Oesch also found two specimens of Linckia multifors (Lamarck) on May 9-10, 1936, and another two specimens of Ophidiaster lioderma H.L. Clark at Padada Beach on the same dates.

Oesch also uncovered twenty specimens of Ophidiaster granifer Lutken at Padada Beach between March and July 1936 and ninety-four specimens from Padada River. Dr. Name got one specimen from Paloda River on November 14, 1937. At Padada Beach, Oesch also stumbled upon a specimen of Ophidiaster pustulus (von Martens) while scouring the area on July 6-19, 1936.

Twenty-four specimens of Asterina coronata coronata von Marten, species Asterinidae, were harvested at Padada Beach and Padada River by Oesch, and

by Dr. Name at Digos reef and north of Santa Cruz. The discoveries were made between March 8, 1936 and November 20, 1937.

Twelve specimens of Asterina cephea Muller and Troschel were found by Oesch at Padada Beach in March-July 1936, while a unique six-rayed sample was discovered by Dr. Name north

of Santa Cruz on November 20, 1937. On the other hand, Oesch found ninety-two samples of Patiriella exigua (Lamarck) at Padada Beach between May and July 1936, while six specimens were collected at Paloda River, including a six-rayed found on March 8, 1936.

Between June 28 and July 8, 1936, Oesch collected six specimens of Othilia luzonica Gray, species Echinasteridae, including a six-rayed. On November 20, 1937, a single sample of Acanthaster planci (Linne), species Acanthatteridae, was found north of Santa Cruz, by Dr. Name.

And on July 6-19, 1936, fragments of a sample of Mithrodia clavigera (Lamarck), species Mithrodiidae, were discovered by Dr. Name, also in Santa Cruz.

A study conducted by Sorsogon State College titled ‘Biodiversity of Echinoderms’ provides an elaborate appreciation of the star�ish population found in Davao Gulf: “A total of 2357 individuals were identi�ied along the intertidal zones of Davao Gulf in Davao City, Philippines. These species belong to 8 genera and 4 families of sea stars. Of these, 1842 species belong to fami-

ly Astropectinidae, 484 species are under the family of Ophidiasteridae, 30 species for family Oreasteridae, and 1 species in the family of Acanthasteridae.

“Uneven distribution of sea star species is attributed to the difference in the type of habitat and its food sources. Majority of the sea stars were Astropecten polyacanthus since these sea stars are common in sandy intertidal areas and sea grass beds distinctive of the habitat. This type of habitat is ideal for the sea stars to obtain food and to burrow in the substrate during daytime and becomes active at night…

“The study revealed a diversity index of 28.45% using Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index indicating low species richness and evenness in the intertidal zones of Davao Gulf in Davao City.”

Among the star�ish varieties that can be found in the gulf, according to the American Museum Novitates (1941), are the Hegeronuci oeschi and Sphaerpzius oeschi (named after Oesch); Trapezia davaoensis, Leptodius davaoensis, Chlorodiella davaoensis, and actumus davaoensis (named after Davao); and Charybdis padadina (named after Padada).

Panelo described the UN Special Rapporteur’s call for an independence probe as an interference on Philippine sovereignty.

FOR many of us, the country of Bangladesh is only familiar through the labels of many popular fashion brands, not many of us really know and understand the young country’s rich history, rich culture and colourful traditions.

Last June 7, the Embassy of Bangladesh in the Philippines led by its ambassador Asad Alam Siam and its dynamic Honorary Consul General of Bangladesh in Mindanao , businesswoman, Jojie IlaganBian, held a photo exhibit at the Atrium of SM Lanang Premier.

Titled “Faces of Bangladesh” the exhibit featured photographs of Davao lifestyle writers Michaelangelo “Mike” Dakudao and In Gerald “Jing-

goy” Salvador who recently visited Bangladesh through the country’s “Visit Bangladesh Programme.”

The photographs on exhibit features the country’s natural and cultural beauty with scenes from life in rural Bangladesh reflecting its ageold traditions and agrarian culture. Also featured were colourfiul scenes from the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangali calendar, which the writers also experienced during their trip.

“Experiencing Bangladesh for a week, indeed, will convince you and make you believe in the potential and promise of this young nation of hardworking people who truly love and are proud of their country,” shared architect

Also a fan of indigenous fabrics and styes Mike also had this to say on what people should look for when visiting the country “I was amazed at the beautiful fabrics Bangladesh produces and sells in its many markets. I was also able to buy beautiful leather shoes which were affordable and

Although Jinggoy was absent during the launch of the exhibit due to an earlier scheduled trip, he shared that his visit to Bangladesh opened his eyes to the country’s rich culture.

The truth that digital nomads do I SPEAK FOR MYSELF writing this, amid a mental storm, in this big metro in the Philippines—I couldn’t settle myself, and I just had to write. Lately, I’ve been rethinking the plans I’ve made for myself. There are ounces of regret here and there, but for the most part, I wouldn’t be the person I am without having gone through what I did for the past 10 months.

Thinking and overthinking alike, I knew I had to write the truth. It’s been simmering inside me for some time now. I don’t consider myself to be an expert in remote work, freelancing, or being a digital nomad. Though, I’ve been working remotely full-time for the best of the last three years.

Yet I only started dabbling in remote work back mid-year of 2012. Woah! A total of seven years! That should account for credible experience, I must say.

I haven’t written much about this part of my life— how I manage to make a living when it seems that I don’t have a ‘real job’ as most people would assume. It took me a while to write it because I wasn’t convinced that this was really the path for me. I thought this was an in-between phase. Maybe like a gap year but a personal one where I needed space and time to think clearly on what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I’m sharing this story for two primary reasons. The first one, to shed enlightenment on the overly-romanticized unconventional way of living.

This kind of lifestyle is not meant for everybody. Some people still prefer the routine and security within a corporate structure, and that’s fine.

I’ll talk more about this below.

Second, I want to share my experience with those who are considering taking the leap from corporate life to remote life can make an informed decision. When I was starting out, I’d grab a chance at any suggestion or advice I could get my hands or eyes on.

This is my way of giving back to the community that freely shared personal struggles and experiences—both the highs and lows—to those who cared.

THE TRUE DEFINITION OF REMOTE WORK The term ‘remote work’ isn’t new. There are a lot of well-written posts about this topic. Particularly this one from Remote Year () which gives a general overview. As

well as this one from Buffer () which I love because it shows a more in-depth explanation to remote work—there are a lot of various types!

In the Philippines, the term remote work isn’t used that much unless you’re from the industry itself. The terms’ freelance’ or ‘work-from-home’ or ‘online-based’ are ones that float around more in the verbal sphere. I have a big dislike of hearing these words because where I’m from, there’s a lot of negative connotations when it comes to people who don’t have a conventional way of making a living.

Freelancing is pretty much being an entrepreneur where

you handle a set of clients and projects independently. While remote work may mean that you’re hired by a company or organization and expected to do work as an employee would except that you don’t have to go to an office. You’re expected outputs, not hours-tracking.

The setup may differ as not all jobs are created equal, but for the most part, I speak based on experience working remotely for a fantastic marketing agency who trusts us well enough to deliver what is asked of us. No time-tracking, no specific hours required to be online (because we’re from different timezones) but of course, we’re expected to

During the GCash for Good launch in Davao City, Villasenor also disclosed that that people now prefer to donate online, as this removes the hassle of having to go through long queues and processes, giving them more time to focus on their daily lives.

He quoted a study by 2017 Global Trends in Giving which shows that 54 percent of individuals prefer to donate online, while the total volume of donations made online grew by a strong 12.1 percent.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said ensuring “just and equitable” compensation for public school teachers is key to retraining competent and committed civil servants.

Briones added that she fully supports President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncement to raise the salaries of teachers.

“As Education Secretary, and as an advocate, I am

committed to the policy to promote and improve the social and economic status of public school teachers, their living and working conditions, and their terms of employment,” she said.

Briones added that the current DepEd administration "vows to continuously expand the scope of employee welfare and safeguard the personal and professional development of both its teaching and non-teaching personnel" which is a priority under her 10-point agenda.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) earlier said government would need around PHP150 billion annually for a PHP10,000 increase for public school teachers.

President Duterte has ordered the National Bureau of

Investigation (NBI) and other government agencies to shut down investment schemes that are proliferating, mainly in Southern Mindanao, for conning people of their hardearned money.

President Duterte said the activities of these investment schemes, including the Kapa Community Ministry International, are clearly a form of estafa.

Several investment schemes have sprouted in Southern Mindanao and have reportedly been branching out to as far as Luzon in recent days. These include Kapa, headed by Joel Apolinario, which promises a 30 percent “love gift” each month. Some schemes, such as the Tagum City-based Rigen Marketing, Jogle and Ever Arm, even promise a return of up to 500 percent.

In the interview, Duterte said the NBI should immediately put a stop to these schemes.

The President said he has been telling people that “when it is too good to be true, it is fraud.”

Muhammad Ra�li quickly put Indonesia up with a �ifth-minute goal before the U23 Azkals kept the 0-1 scoreline at halftime.

Indra Sjafri’s Indonesian youngsters could have won the third-place playoff against the young Azkals by an even larger margin, but they were denied by the crossbar three times in the �irst 45 minutes.

“I’m here playing basketball for a living. Life’s pretty good,” he said. “Every day isn’t given to you.

You should be happy you wake up every day. I’m great. I’m alive.

“That’s the staying-inthe-moment thing I’ve always lived by. So it wasn’t hard to do. We just kind of made that the forefront of our team.

“We just have a bunch of guys that are in the moment, understanding we’re just going to keep playing and keep working.”

Leonard was inspired by being forced to sit out with an injury.

“You never know when those times will come when you’re not going to be able to play,” he said.

“That’s what my mindset really comes from and what made me grow as a player.

Those are the worst times in basketball.

“It’s not losing games or missing shots. It’s about you being able to play. I grew up my whole life wanting to play in the NBA. And when that’s taken away, it’s terrible.”

For Lowry, it’s appreciating that real adversity isn’t found playing basketball for millions of dollars no matter what the �inal score.

“What my mom had to go through and my grandmom, feeding myself, my brother and my other little cousins, going to work, getting up at �ive in the morning, making me cereal and being able to provide for me and my brother and my family, that’s pressure,” Lowry said.

aying the staging of the �irst world heavyweight championship in Davao City is a testament to the ability of the LGU to capably host major sporting events, Mayor Sara thanked RED Boxing Int’l and Global Boxing Organization for bringing the Thrilla in Davao in this part of the country.

The local chief executive described boxing both as a highly cerebral and physical sport that requires strength, endurance as well as character and discipline.

“As a combat sport, boxing develops stamina and strength, tests the limits of one’s endurance and also helps build character by teaching perseverance, discipline and self-con�idence,” said Mayor Sara of the boxing extravaganza that is expected to attract national as well as international attention.

For his part, Games and Amusement Board chief Abraham Kahlil Mitra congratulated GBO and RED Boxing Promotions for bringing back the glory of heavyweight boxing in the Philippines.

“Our country has been recognized as the stage for the historic “Thrilla in Manila, the bout which culminated the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier trilogy,’ adding that the “epic battle showcased the unbelievable power of these legendary boxers and is therefore deemed as one of the greatest �ights in the history of professional boxing.”

Mayor Sara was profuse with positive words, saying “may this

gathering foster greater camaraderie and sportsmanship… inspire each member of the Filipino boxing community to continue helping and uplift the condition of boxers as they strive for excellence.”

Promoter Rey Rodis, chair of RED Boxing Int’l, cited Mayor Sara and her staff for their ef�icient collaboration. He said part of the proceeds of the Davao Thrilla will go to Buhay Kamao Foundation, a charity project that will bene�it poor and disabled boxers, including scholarships for their children.

Rodis also praised the GAB for the quick and ef�icient facilitation of documents of all boxers concerned.

Meanwhile, both protagonists - American Ron Johnson and his Bolivian opponent, Saul Farah, are already tapering off in their spartan regimen having each prepared hard in their respective bailiwicks.

The 34-year old Cleveland, Ohio-born Johnson, the WBF three-belt owner, trained in Las Vegas, his home for the last 18 years while Farah, 36, is a seasoned campaigner who last climbed the ring last March, beating Cesar Mamani for the Bolivian heavyweight title. Both are doing �inal workouts at the Elorde Davao gym.
