resident Rodrigo Duterte urged all Dabawenyos to go out Monday, May 13 and vote for the senators who vowed to help the administration.

During the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) 2019 Campaign Caravan for the Senators held on Thursday, May 9 at the San Pedro Square, Davao City mayor and HNP chairperson, Sara Duterte Carpio, speaking on behalf of her father, said the president begged the Dabawenyos to choose the senators who would help him in his endeavors.

“Nanghangyo siya sa inyoha ug suporta para sa mga senators nga naa dinhi diri karon nga nag ingon nga musuporta pud sa iyahang administration ug sa iyahang

mga proyekto, ug sa iyahang programa, ug sa tanan niyang mga initiatibo,” the presidential daughter said after announcing at the last-minute that her father would not be able to grace the rain-soaked rally.

The younger Duterte, however, announced that her father, who was supposed to be the main guest and speaker was monitoring the program entirely through live stream.

avao del Norte gubernatorial candidate Edwin Jubahib, on Thursday, May 9, shrugged off the allegations of a former security aide of Davao del Norte 1st District Representative Pantaleon Alvarez claiming massive corruption during the latter's house speakership period.

Jeffrey Lopez Cabigon of Carmen, Davao del Norte, accused Alvarez and Jubahib of violations of Republic Act No. 7080, otherwise known as the Plunder Act, and RA 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. The complainant �iled plunder charges before the of�ice of the Ombudsman-Mindanao on Monday, May 6 against the former speaker and re-electionist Alvarez and Jubahib himself, who has denied all allegations.

This clever schemes, said the aspiring governor, are all made up stories from the opposition to stain his reputation to the people of Davao del Norte since he claimed he is leading the race based on the latest survey.

In Cabigon's af�idavit complaint, Jubahib allegedly bought two Hummer vehicles in Subic for P6 million and P8million cash.

The electorate will choose from a list of 62 hopefuls vying for 12 Senate seats.

Compared to previous Senatorial elections, this year's race has the biggest number of candidates by far. The previous high was during the 2010 polls with 61 aspirants.

Out of the 62 Senatoriables, 51 are men and 11 are women. Seven of these candidates are reelectionists seeking a second term while another seven are seeking a return to the Senate.

Among them are 7 reelectionists looking for a second term in the Senate. They are Senators Sonny Angara, Bam Aquino, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Koko Pimentel, Grace Poe and Cynthia Villar. Another 7 candidates are seeking a Senate comeback like Pia Cayetano, Juan Ponce-Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, Lito Lapid, Serge Osmena, Bong Revilla and Mar Roxas.

There are also the eight hard-luck candidates who ran but never won in Senate races since 1987 and are trying again this time. The �irst timers are 40 candidates which included eight who have held local posts and six candidates who have held appointive posts or served in the Duterte administration. Four candi-

dates have held appointive posts in previous administrations without experience in elective posts while thirteen candidates are incumbent or former members of the House of Representatives.

Curiously, there are varying senatorial slates being pushed by the administration and its allies--one has 13 or one over the 12 slots to be �illed, and one has 11 or one less than the 12 slots needed.

The opposition has an 'incomplete' slate of 8.

PDP-Laban, President Rodrigo Duterte's party, has 5 candidates. Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), formed by presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, interestingly has 13 senatorial candidates. President Duterte also has his own slate, called "Du It Pilipinas" which has 11 candidates.

Carrying the �ight for the opposition is the group called "Otso Diretso," with 8 candidates from the Liberal Party and its allies.

Thirteen candidates has names starting with letter A while 3 have Chinese-sounding names in (Bong) Go, (Glenn) Chong and (Willie) Ong. Two have names that sound alike in (Dong) Mangudadatu and (Faisal) Mangondato.

Abul Khayr Alonto ‘a great visionary’

indanao “lost a great visionary, leader, and father” after Secretary Datu Abul Khayr D. Alonto, chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), died of a complication due to pneumonia on Thursday evening at a hospital in Quezon City.

“Mindanao lost a great visionary, leader, and father.

Secretary Alonto always envisioned that no one would need to leave their families behind just to �ind a living.

We, in MinDA, will take inspiration from his wisdom and vision as we continue the pur-

suit for a progressive, peaceful and united Mindanao – in ful�illment of the Mindanao promise,” a statement from MinDA reads.

The secretary had a coronary artery syndrome or blockade of the heart arteries, and had undergone angioplasty procedure at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Quezon City where he died around 10 p.m.

Doha-Davao direct flight starts June 18

D

oha to Davao City airline connection will commence on June 18, this according to Department of Tourism-XI regional director Tanya Rabat-Tan. The Qatar Airways Doha to Davao �light will be weekly (every Friday). The route will be Doha to Davao City, then Davao City to Clark then Doha.

“With the incoming direct �light from Doha in Qatar to Davao City, this will surely bring in more tourists to the region and not just tourists but it will also be bringing in OFWs,” Rabat- Tan said.

The direct �light was announced in March last year

by Akbar Al-Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways Group as part

of its expansion in Southeast Asia. Qatar Airways currently serves weekly �lights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar.

“This will be a chance for us to promote what we have, in the outer places in Davao City, this is a good news for us as additional �lights means additional arrivals.

The DOT-XI regional director said they are working very hard to sustain the route.

“We’re set to meet with

people from Doha, Qatar Airways will be bringing in media from different places actually there will be media coming from the U.S. We will be working together with the different agencies, travel agencies, tour operators and we’re trying to strengthen our Halal Program,” Rabat-Tan said.

She cited the importance of halal as Qatar is a predominantly Moslem country. Currently the Davao Region has only �ive certi�ied halal establishments and with the coming �lights from Doha there is a need to expand the number of halal establishments to service anticipated tourists from Qatar. “These are very interesting things to watch out for in the Bangsamoro in the next few years,” he said.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the BARMM’s output, although lower compared with the 7.5% registered in 2017, was the fourth highest in the country. Bicol registered the highest at 8.9% while Caraga the lowest at 3.2%.

Montenegro said Mindanao’s output expanded by 7.1% in 2018, surpassing the national average of 6.2%.

Services, agriculture, and industry sectors ramped up

Mindanao’s growth, he noted.

He said agriculture performed well in 2018, growing by 2.5% in 2018 from 0.9% in 2017.

“This is what we’ve always been pointing out that every time there is an instance in Mindanao where agriculture is able to demonstrate an uptick rate or growth it generally pushed up Mindanao’s overall economy because remember, 40% of Mindanao’s contributions is related to agriculture, 60% of Mindanao’s GDP is related to agriculture,” he said.

BARMM’s 2018 GRDP 2nd highest in Mindanao

he gross regional domestic product of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) of 7.2% in 2018, the second strongest next to Davao Region’s 8.6%, suggests better economic opportunities for the region under the new governance structure, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) deputy executive director Romeo Montenegro said on Friday.

“The relatively high economic growth rate demonstrated by the Bangsamoro is an indication of better things to come in the region especially with a new governance structure,” he said.

indanao’s peak power demand reached an all-time high at 2,013 megawatts on May 08, 2019, a report from the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee (MPMC) revealed. The highest peak demand last year was at 1,853 recorded on December 13.

Mindanao Development Authority Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, who also heads the MPMC technical working group said this surge in demand can be attributed to the growing economy of Mindanao.

“With Mindanao economy growing solid at 7.1 percent in 2018, primarily driven by our services sector, we can also expect for the power demand to head for an uptick,” Montenegro said.

He, however, assured that Mindanao’s supply remain at a comfortable level, with excess averaging from 400 to 600MW – this despite the summer month, when hydro output is historically low.

MinDA is likewise projecting a need for 3,500 MW of new capacity between 2021-2030 given the sustained economic growth of Mindanao, which triggers massive infrastructure and industry developments across the region.

“At least 40 20-storey buildings are expected to rise in Davao City alone in the next three to �ive years, with each building requiring at least 5 MW of electricity.

It is crucial that power supply moves along this growth trajectory in the long-term, thus the need to bring in new and reliable capacities even before the develop-

ments get ahead of us,” Montenegro said.

Although hydro power courtesy of the Agus-Pulangi complex remains to be the biggest and cheapest single source for power in Mindanao, several coal power plants have come on line in the last two years and, combined, now accounts to more than half of the supply, according to MinDA. “The next big challenge is to ensure a balanced mix of energy sources that will provide these new capacities, so we can continue to provide clean, reliable, and affordable power for the consumers,” Montenegro said.

Brownout free election The highest peak demand also comes in time with the scheduled increase in discharge of water from Lake Lanao for impounding to the downstream reservoirs, to ensure reliable power supply for the national elections.

“Basically, all power plants are required to be ready to supply at full capacity,” Montenegro said.

This is in support to the Department of Energy led election task force efforts, which enjoin all power suppliers and distribution utilities to provide full support and participation to ensure continuous and adequate power supply before, during, and after the election throughout the country.

Given that it's a holiday, power demand in Mindanao during next week's elections is projected to be around 1,700-1,800MW, with expected dependable supply of 2,200-2,500MW.

A MOTHER’S STORY TEXT AND PHOTOS BY HENRYLITO D. TACIO “You will never discern where you’re going unless you know where you came from.”

The statement came from the mouth of Saturnina – more popularly known as Tina – Dela Rita. She said those words while recalling her past. In between the conversation, she was in tears; in some instances, she cried unabashedly. Although she didn’t want to remember it anymore, she insisted that she wanted to share her story.

The second of four daughters, Tina couldn’t recall the complete names, the places, and the time but there were some that were retained. She could not remember her father’s name.

She was only six when she was given by her mother Ramona to Luciano Ortiz, a wealthy family in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. “Our mother couldn’t take care of us anymore,” she recalled.

“She was alone in providing our needs. We were very poor and she never �inished schooling.”

Her father died – poisoned by the man he trusted.

Tina said her parents owned a huge land in their hometown.

Her father was a farmer who planted corn in their farm, which was also planted to co-

conut. One day, a salesman came to their home and talked with her father.

The salesman told her father that if he would sell the land to him, he would bring the Dela Rita family to a town where they won’t encounter any hardships at all. At that time, products from the farms were miniscule. The father had a hard time meeting both ends meet.

“My parents were illiterate,” said Tina. “My father believed what the salesman told him.”

Tina never knew whether her father sold the land to the salesman. But one early morning, she was awakened by her mother that they would be leaving. “I was completely surprised,” she said. “We never bade goodbye to my uncles and aunts. I really didn’t know which place we came from but what I remembered was we travelled by boat for almost a day.”

Accompanying the family was the salesman. When they arrived in Zamboanga del Norte, they travelled again to a far �lung area, whose name she could no longer remember. It was there that the fami-

ly settled for almost two years.

The father thought he would �ind heaven in the new place but instead it was hell.

What the salesman told him before was the exact opposite.

The land was barren; nothing much would grow.

The good thing was that her father was industrious.

He remembered her father waking up early in the morning. He would walk several kilometers away to �ish in the open sea.

The �ish he caught were sold in the public market. He came home with some foods for his family. During rainy season, he would plant some corns and other crops in the farm.

Then tragedy struck the family. The father and the eldest daughter, Livinia, got sick of malaria. “The salesman heard what had happened,” Saturnina recalled. “He came to our home and told my father and my sister to take the medicine that would heal them both.”

After the salesman had left, the two ingested the medicine. A few minutes later, her father had dif�iculty breathing. The mother was in panic; she didn’t know what to do. They were far from town.

They didn’t have money. The children themselves didn’t know what was happening.

That day, the father died.

Livinia, however, survived because she vomited the medicine she had taken. After the father was buried, Ramona and her four daughters went to Sindangan to try their luck.

Ramona found a little place where she and her children would live for a year.

“Our mother would leave us in the early morning and would return before the sun sets,” Tina recalled. “We were always hungry. There were times, the four of us were crying.”

The mother worked all day and then took care of the children whenever she was at home. Her work was doing menial jobs like washing clothes for the wealthy families. She also did errands for other people.

There were times when Tina heard her mother crying at night for no apparent reason at all. Each day, Ramona

was getting frail – until she �inally contacted a disease. As she could no longer take care of her daughters, she decided to give them to other people for adoption.

The eldest was given to the town mayor, Joaquin Mesias. The Caballero family adopted the third daughter named Maura. Belen, the youngest, was taken up by the Enriquez family. Tina went to the Ortiz family.

In the beginning, the sisters would still see each other from time to time – in the market or some gathering.

Then, the meeting became irregular. The last time they were together was when their mother died.

During the wake, the four daughters were having a hard time understanding everything. After all, they were still kids – the eldest being seven years old while the youngest was four years old. “What would happen to us now?” the little Tina wondered as tears �lowed from her years.

When Luciano Ortiz died of an accident, the wife Rosario met Diosdado Gloria, a businessman from Davao. He courted her and when they got married, the couple had to go to Davao bringing Tina with them.

It was abrupt. Tina never had a chance of saying goodbye to her three sisters. “It was in 1950 that we came to Toril in Davao City,” she recalled. “After I left Zamboanga, I have not heard anything from my sisters nor have seen them.”

Tina stopped talking. She cried for a few moments and then wiped away the tears from her cheeks. She will turn 69 this coming November 15. Her birthday wish, she said, is to see her three sisters.

“A few years ago, I went back to Sindangan to �ind them,” she said, again crying.

“I was so excited; I was hoping to see them after all these years. But I wasn’t lucky. They were no longer there. People didn’t know where they were.

Someone told me that Belen, the youngest, died already.”

Again, a few minutes of silence followed. Then, her mood changed; she was already smiling when she recalled how she met her hus-

band, Generoso or Gener for short. She was watching the restaurant of her adopted mother when the young man from Davao City came to eat for lunch. Without her knowledge, he was smitten by her.

In the days that follow, Gener came to the restaurant when he was in town. Then, one time, he told her that he was madly in love with her.

She thought he was not serious, so she told him, “If you really love me, bring your parents next week, and asked for my hands from my mother.”

He did! And so the two tied the nuptial knot on March 28, 1961. She was only 19 at that time. The following year, a healthy baby boy was born; the couple named him after the King of England. Two years later, a girl, Evangeline, was added to the family. Then, another boy, Gerry, came in 1966.

Six more children came in subsequent years: Elena in 1968, Generoso Jr. in 1972, Avednigo in 1974, Jeannyline in 1975, Marilou in 1977, and Arman in 1980. All of them are married now with their own children. Two daughters are living in the United States. Just recently, two of her grandchildren are having their own kids.

“We may not be wealthy

but I am happy that I have a wonderful family,” Tina says now. “They are now my treasures.”

But deep inside her, there seems to be missing. She never knows where her parents were buried. She has a hard time �iguring out from which place her family really were from. More importantly, she longs to hug her sisters. She wonders if they are still alive But being a mother is one of the things she’s proud of.

Her eldest son is a noted journalist who has received several awards for his writing skills.

In one of the features, the son wrote a tribute to his mother: “If there’s one word that a child will speak the �irst time, it should be mother. After all, she carries the baby for nine months. She takes care of the newborn. She breastfeeds, she changes the diaper, and she puts the fragile human being to sleep.

“But I am not the only one she took care of. There were nine of us. She has guided us. She has endowed us with words of wisdom. She has shared her life experiences, her struggles, and her hopes.”

Now, you may be wondering why I know these information? Because Tina happens to be my mother and I am her eldest son!

BIKOY VIDEO IS EVIL Evil rules the world.

Evil is now threatening to destroy our country and our people.

The Bikoy video series is the handiwork of evil.

Satan’s trademarks are visible. He is the architect and author of confusion. He comes to steal our hope, our faith, our grace, our joy.

The Bikoy video series seeks to destabilize the government and force the duly constituted authorities to be stymied, fail, give up and eventually step down.

It is aimed at methodically grabbing power by picturing the Duterte family – the President especially – as corrupt, fascist and dictatorial in the same manner that the Marcos family was previously pictured and are continuously vili�ied.

The Bikoy video series is a well-thought out communications plan designed to sway, convince and incite the Filipinos to hate the Duterte family and

the incumbent administration.

Good that the machiavellian anti-Duterte Bikoy campaign was nipped in the bud.

The discovery and arrest of Rodel Jayme, the confessed administrator of the website Metro.Balita on Facebook where the Bikoy videos were released and aired, is cooperating with investigating agencies. Good for him.

If Jayme realizes his predicament and recti�ies his mistake by agreeing to spill all and become a state witness, he may yet escape the ax.

The ef�icient manner by which the DOJ is conducting the probe, the perpetrators and architects of these evil campaigns will soon be hailed to the courts.

Do you now believe that the oust-Duterte plot is real?

The political opposition – the LPs in particular – has parlayed this strategy during the Marcos martial law regime and continuously implements this template after it successfully forced Erap Estrada out of Mala-

canang.

Unfortunately, this sinister plot and approach have boomeranged against them. They could not secure the support of the military that have remained steadfastly pro-government while the Filipino people are “in love” with Digong.

The new matrix presented to the Malacanang press corps by spokesperson Salvador Panelo detailed the links of the ouster plot that mentioned the participation of the Yellow (LP) and Magdalo groups.

The Bikoy videos are not the product of amateurs, mind you.

They were carefully planned, objectives laid out, amply funded and executed in a James Bond-ish fashion.

The “voluntary” admission of a certain Advincula, who came out in the media using the IBP HQ as his portal, that he is the hooded “Bikoy” in the video was an outlandish display of moronic action.

Exposed a day later as a jailed illegal recruiter and ex-convict, Advincula has unnecessarily jeopardized the ouster plot.

His attempts to establish his credibility were effectively crashed by the IBP’s refusal to take up his cause.

Before that, Sen. Sotto declared that Advincula was the same person who offered him the same malicious schematic info during the previous regime of Noynoy’s involvement in corrupt practices.

What these all reveals support this column’s �irst sentence that “evil rules the world.”

From all appearances, anti-Duterte groups - regardless of the consequences to the nation and its people of their malicious actions - are not about to hold their punches until they successfully take down Duterte from his presidential perch, including the constitutionally instituted authorities.

THE ‘CHOP-CHOP’ WOMEN OF DAVAO In the annals of Philippine crimes, the list of cases of women murdered and their bodies chopped up into pieces and eviscerated is expanding. Since 1967, when the famous Lucila Lalu case hogged the headlines, close to a dozen similar incidents have already been recorded in blotters, nearly all of them post-millennial and most of these classi�ied as a ‘crime of passion.’

Fact is, two of the ‘chopchop lady’ incidents took place in Davao City. The �irst was the case of 39-year-old Maritess Hao who was killed on December 25, 2010by her live-in partner and her body chopped and mutilated. The incident took place in Talomo District.

Eight years later, Davao City landed anew in the headlines. Cut body parts of 43-year-old Julia E. Taguran, a resident of Northpoint condominium of the Villars, were found inside a garbage bag and left on the roadside at Cabantian, Buhangin. No theory was advanced on the case.

The second ‘chop-chip lady’ case after Lalu’s happened on September 23, 1993.

Elsa Santos Castillo, married, and American Stephen Mark Whisenhunt, also married, were having an adulterous affair; both were employed at

Apex Motor Corp. It was at the condo unit of the foreigner that the killing and mutilation took place after the two had a heated argument.

Whisenhunt was convicted and meted lifetime term.

Due to good behavior, his sentence was commuted; he was deported to the US on February 23, 2013. The incident spun two movies: ‘The Elsa Castillo Story: And Katotohanan,’ topbilled Kris Aquino and produced by OctoArts Films and the FLT Films’ ‘Chop-Chop Lady: The Elsa Castillo Story,’ starred by Lorna Tolentino.

One of the most gruesome ‘chop-chop’ crimes was the double murder committed in Talisay City, Cebu. On July 24, 2008, Richard Gudelosao, along with an accomplice, strangled and mutilated Eva Mae Peligro, his future sister-in-law, and cousin Gwendolyn Balasta who witnessed the crime. The motive of the crimes was due to Peligro’s threat to report his indiscretions to his mother and brother abroad. The cut body parts were placed inside garbage bags and dumped in various locations. He was convicted and meted 80 years in imprisonment.

Seventeen years after the Castillo crime, another similar incident took place in Cagayan

de Oro City. On July 28, 2010, 20-year-old Rubie Jane Abalde was raped and her body cut into two. The accused suspected the woman of having an affair with his father.

The following year, on April 1, 2011, another ‘chopchop’ incident was recorded in Laguna. Camille Ann Mamaclay, who was a mother at age 17 and worked as guest relations of�icer (nightclub attendant), was killed and her chopped body later found at the Canlubang Exit. She was last seen with a Korean-looking man who. No suspect was caught and charged.

On January 5, 2017, 17-year-old Mitzi Joy Balunsay, a student of Cavite State University, was found dead at Trece Martires City, her arms and limbs cut off and her stomach disemboweled. Police identi�ied the suspect as his former boyfriend, also studying in the same school.

In Quezon City, Heidi Estrera became the victim of a crime of passion after her husband killed her on March 11, 2018 and chopped her body into chunks. Prior to moving to the big city, the couple, which did not have a child, lived for fourteen years in Davao Oriental. Her spouse admitted to the crime. Police recovered a knife

and a hammer in the crime scene as evidence.

On March 22, 2019, at BelAir, Makati City, a chopped-up body belonging to 26-year-old Wang Ya Lei, a Chinese, was found stuffed in a condominium trash bin, travelling bag, and shopping bag. The crime was an offshoot of a discord between the victim and the condo unit owner. Four Chinese nationals were later charged in court for the crime for their involvement.

Seven days later, on March 29, 2019, Lindsey Avelino, a sales agent, was chopped into pieces and found inside a washing machine, trolley bag and toilet in Barangay Pampang, Angeles City. Her partner, Eduardo Pasion, the prime suspect, was killed in a shootout with cops.

Most well-known among ‘chop-chop lady’ crimes, the 1967 case of Lucila Tolentino Lalu of Candaba, Pampanga was the �irst Filipino ‘crime of passion’ to hit big screen in the year that Lulu’s ‘To Sir with Love,’ No. 1 in Billboard mag’s annual countdown, was the local jukebox hit.

Lalu migrated to Manila to work as waitress and after saving money opened her own salon and resto cum cocktail lounge at Sta. Cruz, Manila. But,

on May 29, 1967, her chopped legs were found at Malabon St., Sta. Cruz, Manila, wrapped in a newspaper and dumped in a trash bin, not too far away from the soda fountain she owned. The following day, here headless and legless torso was discovered on a vacant lot near the Guadalupe Bridge, Makati.

Being single, she had romantic affairs that included a married policeman (with whom she had a child), a 19-year-old waiter she �inancially supported, an unnamed printing press executive, and Jose Luis Santiano, dentistry student who owned up the crime. Santiano later retracted his testimony even if the cops found a blood-stained hammer, knife and razors in his home. He attributed the retraction to his lawyer’s advice.

Since his release, nothing was heard from him.

As an added twist, former Los Angeles police detective turned book author Steve Hodel, in 2003, suggested that Lalu’s killer could have been his father George who was in Manila at the time the crime happened. No indirect proof was found linking George, the suspected killer in the infamous US murder case, The Black Dahlia, in 1947. The remains open and unsolved.

IN SUPPORT of the government’s call for responsible and sustainable tourism, Globe Telecom joined the week-long celebration of Boracay’s rehabilitation aimed at encouraging residents, tourists, and other stakeholders to be more environmentally conscious.

Almost 300 participants from the Globe Store in Boracay, Boracay Foundation Inc., Boracay Inter- agency task force, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, Team Boracay Cyclist,

Philippine National Police, Malay Solid Waste, and Asean Centre for Biodiversity worked together to ensure that the country’s favorite summer getaway retains its pristine condition. The team gathered 32 bags of plastic waste and trash scattered along the popular White Beach where local and foreign tourists often converge.

At the same time, Globe put up an Eco Booth in D’mall where anyone can exchange their plastic bags with eco bags to encourage a more sustainable practice.

abawenyo former WBA interim light �lyweight world champion Randy Petalcorin (29-3-1, 22 KO’s) will be returning to action on June 9th in the Philippines, his Australian co-promoter Peter Maniatis said.

“Randy (Petalcorin) will be back a better boxer.

His IBF world title loss to Nicaraguan Felix Alvarado (34-2, 30 KO’s) was a learning experience for Randy as he battled Alvarado, a man whom I rate as the #1 champion in the Light �lyweight division.

“However, to me, the �ight of Petalcorin vs Alvarado was even, till it was stopped. That is why one Judge had Randy Petalcorin winning the �ight, while the other two foreign judges from Great Britain and Mexico had Alvarado win-

ning the battle,” said Maniatis.

“So to me, the �ight was even, but then all the sudden it got stopped. Fans can watch the video on youtube and see who was winning the �ight till stoppage came,” commented the Hall of Famer Australian promoter today.

“In my mind, we should take the loss as a learning experience. Because from now on, Randy will be a better �ighter, more experienced. That is why right now, he is in training for his June 9 return in his native Philippines. The opponent is still TBA. “Because after his June 9 stay-busy �ight, we are looking for big battles for him later on in this year 2019.

“That is why Petalcorin needs to keep on training

well at Sanman Boxing Gym in General Santos City,” added Maniatis.

For years, Peter Maniatis has been co-promoting the 27-year old Petralcorin together with young award-winning Filipino promoter JC Manangquil, the CEO of Sanman Boxing Promotions.

JC Manangquil has received awards in his work as a promoter, guiding the careers of boxers as Randy Petalcorin, Romero Duno, “Magic” Mike Plania, Jade Bornea, Reymart Gaballo among others.

Incidentally, Maniatis is also being awarded by the WBC Asia as the Australian promoter of the year, in part for his work promoting Petalcorin as well as Andrew Moloney and other boxers.

It’s the third time that Maniatis wins the coveted

distinction as he has also won it in 2012 and 2013.

This year Maniatis will be trophy on May 22 in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand.

“It’s a great honor. So I would like to thank Ultratune, Sean Buckley, Lynden Hosking and thank all our boxers, including Randy for supporting me in winning the award from the WBC Asia leadership, Pol. General Kovid Bhakdibhumi and WBA Asia executive Patrick Cusick.

Maniatis was also inducted into the Australia Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017.

“In my mind, promoters need boxers. We need boxers as Randy Petalcorin and Andrew Moloney and others. Because they are the stars. They are the whole show. They must always come �irst,” feels Maniatis.

SPORTS ALLIES Whether you like it or not, it is a big help to the sports community if we �ind strong sports allies in the political arena.

They can craft laws to bene�it the sports community or if there are existing laws already, they can further improve it, specially if the law was created before 1990. Hey 2019 na ron!

After 29 years, a lot of things have happened!

Currently, in the senatorial line-up, we have former SAP Bong Go who can do that for the sports community. And I like also his plan to create a De-

partment of the Overseas Filipino Workers.

Back to sports, Bong Go is no stranger to sports. If there are events, big or small, you may eventually �ind out later that he may have a big or small contribution to it. What I’m saying is, whether you tell him or not, he likes to be very much involved in sports. In other words, he is your Sportsman.

In the Davao scene, you have Goldie Delvo as another strong sports ally in the City Council.

Goldie, formerly deputy sports chief of the Sports Division-City Mayor’s Of�ice, believe me or not has one of the best minds in sports that you can �ind. She may not have 20 or 30 years experience in the Sports Division, yet she has seen the need to do legislative work to bene�it the sports community.

Bottomline is, we need improved laws for sports.

I know for sure Bong Go and Goldie Delvo will be doing consultative work after they get elected because they have been

doing consultative work anyways even before they decided to run for of�ice.

The sports community is a vibrant community. Daghag bright diha yet if you see the current situation, there is a need to boost it through legislation.

Okay �ine, you may say that, we have the Philippine Sports Commission and the Davao City Sports Division already.

You think that the law that created the PSC is “up to date”?

That needs to be improved? Is it time for the PSC to become

like a Department of Sports?

In the case of Davao City, is it time for the planned Comprehensive Sports Development Plan to be in ful�illment with the help of the City Council now that we have a UP Mindanao-Davao City Sports Complex?

These may be simple questions my fellow sports citizens, yet, a lot of things can be done if we �ind strong sports ally like Bong Go in the Senate of the Republic of the Philippines and Goldie Delvo in the City Council of Davao.

Sports personalities in Monday’s elections

e may not be a professional athlete or an amateur campaigner in international competitions, but yes, former Special Assistant to the President Chrstopher “Bong” Go is a dyed-in-the-wool sportsman. He, along with around 24 others are among the sports personalities vying for of�ice in today’s elections (May 13, 2019).

Go, a sharp-shooting basketball player and a staunch supporter of the Philippine national basketball team, is eyeing for a seat in the Philippine Senate under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) coalition. A partymate is another prominent athlete, former national volleyball team member and triathlete Pia Cayetano who will attempt to make a return to the Senate.

The other names in the sports list venturing into politics are current national men’s basketball coach Yeng Guiao, former Olympian taekwondo jin Monsour del Rosario, fencer Richard Gomez, former pro

boxer Bobby Pacquiao, former basketball star Vergel Meneses and current national volleyball player Ish Polvorosa.

Further down the list are Rene Tongson, a senior master of the International Modern Arnis Federation of the Philippines, basketball coach Elvis Tolentino, PBA team owner and former La Salle basketball player Mikee Romero, ex-UP basketball player Martin Reyes, and national weightlifting association chief Monico Puentevella.

Coaches Ariel Vanguardia and Denden Velez are also in that list.

Go and Cayetano are the only senatorial candidates out of 25 athletes and coaches while those who are vying for representation in legislative districts abd party-list are Bobby Pacquiao, Yeng Guiao, Mikee Romero, and Monico Puentevella.

In Davao City, former sports development of�ice personnel Goldie Delvo is gunning for a council seat in the second district.
