TOURISM BLOW BIR 11 projects 10 percent drop of revenue from tourism-related businesses due to Covid-19

By MAYA M. PADILLO he Bureau of Internal Revenue 11 (BIR 11) is projecting 10 percent revenue loss from tourism related businesses in the region due to coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

T

Abolhasan Balindong, assistant revenue district oficer IV of BIR 11 bared during Wednesday’s Habi at Kape that they submitted to the BIR national ofice last month a pro-

jection of 10 percent drop to their collections from tourism related establishments due to Covid-19. “Covid-19 has an impact in our collection efforts as most establish-

ments affected are the tourism related businesses such as restaurants, transportation, and hotels in the region,” Balindong said. He said currently there are no complaints of losses due to Covid-19 from the said businesses yet. He said they will know this when they start conducting audit to establishments by June this year. “We conduct audit after the iling of 2019 tax

return probably by June. Post-audit kasi tayo kasi wala tayong VAT Added Audit Section or VATAS, sa Metro Manila lang meron,” he said. Balindong said BIR is willing to provide leeway if a establishment is experiencing losses due to the virus. “Sabi nga do not kill the hen that lays the golden egg kung sa tingin natin na hirap ang negosyo,” he

said. Balindong is hopeful that the Covid-19 scare will not escalate in Davao City and in Davao Region, so that tourism related businesses will not suffer. “Ngayon pa lang ramdam na namin ang impact sa mga malls. Apektado na ang mga restaurants, tourist destinations, resorts, and hotels,” he said. Balindong said she cannot give an exact amount

the tourism related businesses have contributed to their overall collection as BIR 11 does not have a collection analysis based on industry, however, the projected 10 percent loss has an impact to their collection target of P21.8 billion for the region this year. BIR 11 will now focus on running after value added taxpayers to achieve the target.
