overnment-run Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) is capable of handling emerging infectious diseases like the 2019-novel corona virus (2019-nCoV) or the Wuhan coronavirus.

SPMC chief of hospital Dr. Leopoldo "Bong" Vega said the hospital is prepared in the event that a patient will test positive for the new coronavirus.

"We are ready. That is the reason why we have isolation rooms. These are not ordinary isolation rooms," Vega told Edge

Davao in a phone interview.

Vega said the isolation facility is built for emerging infectious disease. The building was constructed during the height of infectious diseases like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS Cov),

and N1H1.

The isolation facility near the SPMC compound with rooms are equiped with no-touch wash areas, decontamination rooms and proper air �iltration for the whole facility.

"The facility has negative pressure also," Vega said.

The three isolation room buildings, aimed to stem highly classi�ied airborne viruses and prevent outbreak in the Mindanao Region, has satellite laboratories for research and con�irming tests. Equipped with automated air pres-

sure system, heating, ventilation and air condition systems and laminar �low system.

Vega added that they have a team speci�ic for emerging infections and responsible for triage and evaluation of all suspected cases.

The building of the isolation facility was authorized under the Republic Act No. 10155, the General Appropriations Act with the approval of the Department of Health.

He appealed to the public not to panic as he urged them to get information only from credible

sources and emphasized that false information will only cause unnecessary panic.

“Our top priority is to ensure the health and safety of our constituents.

We will do everything we can to minimize the risk of spreading the virus,” he added.

The novel coronavirus outbreak was declared on Friday by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global health emergency.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday reported that 24 more patients under investigation (PUIs) tested negative for the virus while the second con�irmed case died on Saturday. (PNA)

DavOr to create task force vs. 2019-nCoV

he provincial government of Davao Oriental is set to form an inter-agency task force on the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) amid its outbreak that has created an international alarm, an of�icial said Sunday.

Karen Lou Deloso, Davao Oriental provincial information head, told Philippine News Agency that Governor Nelson Dayanghirang will be convening concerned provincial agencies.

“The governor is set to call a meeting next week to all concerned agencies to discuss preparedness and proactive measures to stop the spread of the disease,” she said.

DA Regional Field Of�ice 11 Director Ricardo M. Onate, Jr. immediately convened an emergency meeting attended by the Davao Occidental provincial veterinarian, municipal agriculture of�icers of Don Marcelino and Malita, military and police of�icials, local environment and risk reduction of�icers, and DABAI veterinary quarantine service on January 30.

DA-BAI national director Ronnie Domingo, on the other hand, instructed the Davao regional veterinary quarantine of�icers (VQOs) to extend full assistance in restricting animal movement, following the 1-7-10 protocol in affected barangays.

Domingo also directed other regional VQOs in Mindanao to strictly enforce quarantine procedures and monitor animal movement.

Dar lauded Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista, and mayors of Don Marcelino and Malita towns for enforcing a temporary lockdown and in establishing 24/7 quarantine checkpoints manned by barangay tanod (village police of�icers) and uni-

formed Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police personnel.

He instructed Domingo to order DA-BAI regional VQOs to conduct investigations, particularly in areas where Don Marcelino actively trades with the towns of Malita, Santa Maria, Jose Abad Santos, all in Davao Occidental, and Sulop, Davao Del Sur. Onate said another coordination meeting with local of�icials and VQOs will be held to identify the disposal sites for culled hogs and conduct an inventory of the total swine population in affected areas.

The DA-RFO11 quick response team, together with Davao Occidental provincial veterinary of�ice and municipal agriculture of�ice of Don Marcelino conducted an investigation on January 29, in eight affected barangays (Linadasan, North Lamidian, South Lamidian, Calian, Mabuhay, Lawa, Nueva Villa and Baluntaya).

The composite team also reported ASF incidence in seven barangays in Bito, Kidalapong, Tubalan, Felis, Mana, Talogoy, and New Argao in Malita.

Laboratory examinations of affected animals revealed similarities of lesions for classical swine fever or hog cholera and ASF. Backyard farmers in the area practice group rearing (pagalam system) of hogs, from different owners, most having no proper housing provisions nor biosecurity practices.

Soccsksargen intensifies monitoring against ASF

W

ith the African swine fever (ASF) so far killing at least 1,000 pigs in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental in Region 11, a livestock expert in Soccsksargen urged Sunday the public to help in preventing the spread of the disease in the area through close monitoring.

Dr. Rene Molina, National Meat Inspection Service-Region 12 (NMIS12) meat control of�icer, stressed the need to intensify the monitoring of piggeries and backyard hog farms to determine if ASF has spread to Soccsksargen.

“We also need to strengthen quarantine measures to prevent the entry of ASF to our region,” he said.

Molina said their of�ice has not yet received a communication from the national of�ice or the laboratory results con�irming it was indeed a case of ASF, but noted that measures to prevent the spread of the

disease have already been put in place in the region.

He said they only learned from media reports on Saturday that 1,000 pigs have died in Don Marcelino town.

Molina added they will discuss the reported new ASF cases with other concerned agencies once of�ice resumes Monday.

Don Marcelino Mayor Michael Maruya earlier said the ASF caused the deaths of the pigs, and that a lockdown has been in place in his locality to prevent the spread of the disease.

He added that eight villages in his town have so far been affected by the ASF outbreak.

ASF is a highly contagious hemorrhagic disease in pigs and characterized by high fever, loss of appetite, hemorrhages in the skin and internal organs, and death in two to 10 days on average after infection, according to the World Organization for Animal Health.

PRRD to hold ‘emergency meeting’ 4 days after 1st 2019-nCov case

resident Rodrigo Duterte is set to hold an “emergency meeting” on Monday — four days after the Philippines con�irmed its �irst case of the deadly novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar defended the Duterte administration against criticism that the inter-agency meeting is long overdue.

The Philippines recorded its �irst 2019-nCoV case on January 30 and saw its �irst coronavirus-related death on Sunday.

“It’s not late. Very timely ang desisyon ng gobyerno. Ang mga desisyon ng gobyerno ay very methodical,” he said in a media brie�ing.

[Translation: It’s not late. The government’s de-

cision is very timely. The decisions of the government are very methodical.]

He also urged Filipinos not to discriminate against the Chinese nationals in the country.

“There were several times when countries around us were there for us. So we should be also there for the Chinese people who are suffering (from) the coronavirus.

There should be no room for discrimination,” he said.

The coronavirus outbreak has killed at least 362 people and infected more than 17,300 globally, as it continues to spread beyond China.

The World Health Organization said there is no community-wide spread of the deadly virus in the country.

Powering up BARMM with renewable energy

he New Zealand government expressed interest of powering up the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) with renewable energy (RE).

Power is one of the strengths of New Zealand as it uses mainly renewable energy (RE) sources making it one of the lowest carbon dioxide emitting countries in terms of electricity generation.

In an interview, NZ Ambassador-delegate Peter Kell said they are eyeing BARMM because they would like to support the

“We are interested on working together on areas where we have strengths and one of those is the renewable energy. That is one of the area we want to work and support in Mindanao,” Kell said.

The electricity sector in New Zealand uses mainly renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal power and wind energy.

“Our RE pro�ile where about 80 percent is renewable mainly is hydro which is about 40 percent and proportions of RE is geothermal, wind and solar,” he said.

he Department of Agriculture (DA) will have to ask for additional funding from the government as it tries to address the recent African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in a town in Davao Occidental.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said while the department is not running out of funds, they may still need additional budget considering that some amounts have already been used for disaster management efforts like that in the Taal Volcano eruption.

“We will have to ask additional budget for this purpose,” Dar said.

“Hindi [tayo] kinakapos. ‘Yung budget, nandiyan pero itong taon ay ang daming kalamidad.

‘Di ba, Taal, nangyari na.

So merong budget ang gobyerno,” he added.

In a memorandum issued January 31, Don

Marcelino, Davao Occidental Mayor Michael Maruya said the continuing incidence of ASF in the town has caused “the mortality of more or less 1,000 heads of swine.”

Dar said the DA will provide �inancial help to hog raisers amid the ASF outbreak. The DA will give P5,000 per hog that will have to be depopulated.

“We have mobilized our teams since early yesterday. Nakipag-ugnayan na kay Gov. [Claude] Bautista so everything is in place.

Apple dethrones Samsung

A

pple was the top smartphone seller in the �inal quarter of last year, seizing the crown from Samsung, according to market trackers.

Apple shipped an estimated 73.8 million iPhones during the fourth quarter, driven by the popularity of its newest models in the US and Europe and lower-priced handsets in other parts of the world, International Data Corp reported this week.

Apple, which has been below Samsung for some time, “is recovering, due to cheaper iPhone 11 pricing and healthier demand in Asia and North America,” said Neil Mawston of Strategy Analytics, whose separate survey also showed Apple on top in the past quarter.

South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung delivered some 69.4 million handsets as it slipped to the number two position, according to IDC.

Chinese smartphone powerhouse Huawei remained a strong player in its home market, but saw sales of premium models take a hit in Western Europe in the wake of US sanctions, according to IDC analyst Melissa Chau.

“Things will continue to look challenging for Huawei given that the trade war is still not yet resolved, while new uncertainty raised around the Wuhan coronavirus could potentially have adverse effects on not just Huawei, but all players reliant on the China smartphone supply chain,” Chau said.

Huawei shipped 56.2 million smartphones during the quarter, a decline of about seven percent from the same period a year earlier, IDC reported.

“Kasi if you will be able to export then you will be able to get very good prices for your mango like the domestic market is only P50 per kilo when you export you can command the price from P300 to P400 per kilo,” he said.

AirAsia has said it never made any purchase decisions that were premised on Airbus sponsorship, and that it would fully cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Time is of the essence

In any emergency, the most potent weapon is information dissemination.

How people manage information to make it useful in keeping the welfare and safety of all concerned is very critical. It could spare lives. And it could also cost lives.

Hence, when the Department of Health (DOH) dillydallied in making preemptive actions against the dreaded new coronavirus (designated as novel coronavirus or 2019 nCoV), it could have already cost a lot. The timeline would show that Health Secretary Francisco Duque announced the country’s “�irst con�irmed case” of the novel coronavirus on January 30 of a Chinese woman who had sought medical advice as early as January 25.

They said she was showing no other symptoms but a mild cough and was only con�irmed when her lab results from the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia yielded positive.

However, here’s the catch. The woman was admitted along with her boyfriend who based on medical record could have been sick �irst. The woman, concerned with her partner’s plight and realizing that they were ‘honeymooning’, decided to seek medical help herself.

It was case of the woman, who showed no signs of the coronavirus symptoms, which was reported as the �irst case. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the boyfriend that was reported as �irst case and it was not until February 2, a day after he died that it was reported the �irst case of coronavirus death outside China.

Why did the DOH omit the man’s case? It’s highly suspicious that the case of the boyfriend was not known to health of�icials. Duque did not explain why they did not report the man’s case nor admitted the truth about his medical condition during their announcement of the �irst con�irmed case involving the female partner.

These are two related cases and having omitted putting into the discussion the case of another person who is also con�irmed to have the virus or perhaps being under investigation (PUI), affects how the country will deal with this emergency.

Not even the grounds of protecting one’s privacy can outweigh the supervening urgency to provide immediate information of an even bigger threat. In this emergency, concerned of�icials directly handling the matter should realize that time is of the essence.

‘LOST’ MONUMENTS OF DAVAO Progress has its own way of destroying memorials that remind us of key events in the past, like bringing down monuments, sacri�icing natural habitats, cutting down trees that survived the test of time, and tearing down historical markers that should be preserved for posterity.

Some of these ‘lost’ Davao landmarks are the Jones Monument, Rizal Monument, Victory Monument, and Key Monument, among others.

The iconic post-war Jones Monument was built at the intersection of �ive streets, namely: Uyanguren (R. Magsaysay), J.P. Laurel (Bajada), Jacinto, Claveria (C.M. Recto), and the extension of Uyanguren. It was named after American congressman William Atkinson Jones (1849-1918), author of The Jones Law of 1916, which replaced the Philippine Organic Act of 1902.

Jones, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (18911918) represented the �irst district of the Commonwealth of Virginia. His pedigree came from his forebears who fought several wars and served distinguishably in the American legislature and bureaucracy.

Enacted on August 29, 1916, Jones Law, was passed “to declare the purpose of the people of the United States as to the future political status of the people of the Philippine Islands, and to provide a more autonomous government for those islands.”

Meanwhile, Victory Monument, also known as the Davao Battle Memorial, was constructed after the war in tribute of the Filipino and American liberation forces who sacri�iced their lives in a bloody con�lict that �inally set free Davao City in May 1945 from the Japanese Imperial forces. It got the name’s inspiration from Operation Victor V, an offensive operation devised to bring down the enemy in Mindanao.

The iconic landmark, for some reason, was later removed from its pedestal and supposedly given as a gift to the city of Cotabato. The monument now stands in a downtown plaza, visibly blending with the tree-decorated landscape.

Another exciting landmark was the Rizal Monument that originally stood at the rotunda where the Bonifacio Monument, which now serves as traf�ic circle, at the intersection of Magallanes

(A. Pichon Sr.), Claveria, and Washington streets. There are claims the same monument has already found its way in Mati City.

Something that is puzzling is the location of Key Monument. In the 1934 Revised Administration Code of the Philippines, Davao Port Road was a 1.6-km stretch from Jones Monument to Key Monument. If today’s Magsaysay Street was prewar Davao Port Road, then Key Monument was probably in reference to the Santa Ana lighthouse that still stands to this day.

Decades ago, Augusto Suazo, the recognized Davaoeño painter, conceived the idea of a Bagobo Monument in full ethnic attire holding a durian in both hands and standing. It was executed

by Ruperto Solon and the sculptor was installed across the entrance of the old Davao airport.

It was damaged when a bomb was exploded on March 4, 2003 in a nearby waiting shed. A similar statue, minus a pedestal, now stands at the small junction near the Bajada �lyover. There’s also a variation of the sculpture with a Bagobo in lotus position and a durian between his palms.

Over the past three decades,

new landmarks have sprouted in various places throughout the city. Welcoming visitors to Davao City from the south is the massive Carabao Monument, which drew controversies in the past; it is the brainchild of the late city councilor Renato Bangoy. At the junction of J. P. Laurel Avenue and R. Castillo is the Golden Kris Monument, which is a tribute to the Moro heritage of Davaoeños.

The Monument of Peace and Unity in front of city legislature was unveiled in 1998, coinciding with the centennial of the country’s declaration of independence. It symbolizes the harmony between the indigenous settlers of the region and the migrants that have made the city their permanent home. The Ohta Memorial Monument built in 1926, meanwhile, is an obelisk dedicated to Ohta Kyosaburo, the �irst Japanese hemp planter in Davao City, who died in 1917. It can be found inside the Mintal Elementary School campus.

Due west is the Magsaysay Monument, a 35-meter-high obelisk supported by a tripod and a circular skating rink on the ground. The landmark was built under the auspices of the Phil-

ippine Veterans Legion, Davao chapter, sometime in 1959, roughly two years after President Ramon Magsaysay, to whom the memorial is dedicated, died in a plane crash. It is found inside the park that has also been named after him.

Going southwest, at Times Beach, speci�ically the Baywalk, is the David Monument, a statue showing a naked �igure of a man and was the focus of disgust in the past from the sentinels of morality. The reason behind the controversial carving is a given; it is built near the entrance of a motel owned by the same person who commissioned the sculpture.

And as a testament to the proli�icity of Davao sculptor Kublai Millan, a Datu Bago awardee, are the dozens of stone monuments and statues he had built in the last two decades (19992019). Among his credentials are the Durian Monument adjacent to the city’s international airport; the giant Eagle Monument at the city’s People’s Park; the Kampilan Monument in the province of Sultan Kudarat; the Risen Christ in Tagum City; and the Banana Monument in Panabo City.

Be deliberate, but once you’ve made up your mind – jump in!” – Charles R. Swindoll *** Who says age – that number which most women fear (sorry, ladies if most of you are singled out) – matters? Look at Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao who, at 40, still manages to win his boxing match against a younger opponent.

If you’re like the world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, age also doesn’t matter at all. He was already 68 when he created his most famous structure – in about two hours. But hold your breath �irst. It actually took him long to do it.

Brandon Spector, in an article published in the widely-circulated Reader’s Digest, shares the story: “In 1934, Pittsburgh department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann Sr. hired Wright to design a retreat around the waterfalls of his forested Pennsylvania property. Wright visited the site and assured Kaufmann he had big plans. In truth, he hadn’t drawn a thing.

That’s how trouble started brewing. “Weeks became months, and on a Sunday morning, September 22, 1935, Kaufmann spontaneously decid-

ed to visit Wright’s studio and check his progress. He would arrive before lunch, Kaufmann explained over the phone, and was very excited to see the designs.”

If you were in Wright’s shoes, what would be your response. I know what you are thinking.

Read the rest of the story: “With nervous apprentices watching and Kaufmann hours from his door, Wright �inished breakfast, then drew up the plans for what became Fallingwater – an icon of modern design and a US National Historic Landmark.”

What Wright did – the delaying tactic – is procrastination. Its synonyms include dawdle, dally, defer, drag, linger, loiter, postpone, protract, retard, stall, suspend, tarry, temporize, and wait.

Dictionary de�ines it as “delay or postpone action.” It also means “put off doing something.”

Many famous men have shared their thoughts on the subject. “Never put off till tomorrow what may be done day after tomorrow just as well,” said American humorist and novelist Mark Twain. US President Abraham Lincoln also said, “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”

Two other American presidents did say on the subject.

Thomas Jefferson, stated, “Never put off for tomorrow, what you can do today.” Dwight David Eisenhower also said, “Neither a

wise nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.”

Wright, however, is not alone.

There are so many people – famous at that – who procrastinate for various reasons. Bestselling author Paulo Coelho admitted, “It was my failure that �irst kept me from attempting the master work. Now, I’m beginning what I could have started ten years ago.

But I’m happy at least that I didn’t wait twenty years.”

Miranda July, the woman behind It Chooses You, shared her own experience: “The funny thing about my procrastination was that I was almost done with the screenplay. I was like a person who had fought dragons and most limbs and crawled through swamps and now, �inally, the castle was visible. I could see tiny children waving �lags on the balcony; all I had to do was walk across a �ield to get to them.

Then, something unusual happened. The American �ilm director, screenwriter, singer, actress, author and artist went on: “But all of a sudden, I was very, very sleepy. And the children couldn’t believe their eyes as I folded down to my knees and fell to the ground face-�irst, with my eyes open. Motionless, I watched ants hurry in and out of a hole and I knew that standing up again would be a thousand times harder than the dragon or the

swamp and so I did not even try.

I just clicked on one thing after another after another.”

More often than not, writers have this habit of doing things “later on.” American playwright and essayist Paul Rudnick wrote: “As a writer, I need an enormous amount of time alone. Writing is 90% procrastination: reading magazines, eating cereal out of the box, watching infomercials.

It’s a matter of doing everything you can to avoid writing, until it is about four in the morning and you reach the point where you have to write.”

To procrastinate once is a while is alright. But doing it for several times that it becomes a habit, well, that’s another story.

“Habitual procrastination will readily testify to all the lost opportunities, missed deadlines, failed relationships and even monetary losses incurred just because of one nasty habit of putting things off until it is often too late,” wrote Stephen Richards, author of The Secret of Getting Started: Strategies to Triumph over Procrastination.

Do what you do today and don’t wait for tomorrow. Remember, we have given today and that’s why it is called present.

Yesterday is gone and you cannot relive the past. Tomorrow is still out there and what if, as the line of a song goes, “tomorrow never comes”?

Now, let me tell you a story

shared by William Barclay: It came to pass that Satan was testing all his little devils on the methods they would use to get people into the burning hell.

“What trick or like would you use?” he asked them.

A little devil pupil raised his hand and answered: “I’d tell them there is no heaven. Heaven is just a mere imagination.”

“You’re crazy,” Satan shouted. “Deep down inside everyone believes that they are one day going to be rewarded in heaven for all the good work they do. Saying there is no heaven does not work.”

Another volunteered, “I’d tell them there is no hell.” Satan again �ired back: “That’s no good either. Instinctively, everyone knows that someday – in a hell – evil and evildoers are going to get what they deserve. It is going to catch up. Forget about that argument.”

CAN THEY BE CURTAILED?

hey can strike anywhere, anytime.

On a cruise ship, in the corner restaurant, in the grass just outside the back door. And anyone can be a carrier: the stranger coughing in the next seat on the bus, the classmate from a far-off place, even the sweetheart who seems perfect in every way. For whatever we go and whatever we do, we are accosted by invaders from unseen world.” – Medical writer Michael D. Lemonick in a cover story of Time magazine in 1994.

Buoyed by improved sanitary conditions, advances in medical research, new vaccines, and better antibiotics, almost health of�icials in industrialized countries declared that the world need not worry about the scourge of communicable diseases.

In 1970, Surgeon General W. H. Stewart told the US Congress that the time had come to close the book on infectious disease. Five years later, well-known biologist John Cairns wrote that the Western World had virtually eliminated death by infectious disease.

But like Phoenix that rises from the ashes, infectious diseases staged a comeback – deadlier, more virulent, and on a killing spree. From time to time, new forms of previous virus emerge and create terror among human beings.

Such is the case of the novel coronavirus (2019nCoV), which was �irst identi�ied by Chinese health authorities. The virus is associated with an outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. “ C o ro naviruses are a large family of viruses, some causi n g illness in people and others that circulate among animals, including camels, cats and bats,” the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve and infect people and then spread between people.”

Such as has been seen with SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome). SARS, �irst recognized in China, caused a worldwide outbreak in 2002-2003 with 8,098 probable cases in-

cluding 774 deaths. MERS, on the other hand, was �irst reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has since caused illness in people from dozens of other countries.

Coronaviruses are named for the crownlike spikes on their surface. There are four main sub-groupings of coronaviruses, known as alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Human coronaviruses were �irst identi�ied in the mid1960s. So far, seven coronaviruses can infect people, including 2019-nCoV. In the beginning, many of the patients in the outbreak had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. In Wuhan, a city in central China, vendors legally sold live animals which are butchered and eaten. “This is where you get new and emerging diseases that the human population has never seen before,” said Dr.

Kevin J. Olival, a biologist and vice president of research with EcoHealth Alliance, a nonpro�it research organization, who has tracked previous outbreaks, told New York Times.

It all started before Christmas celebration. On December 31, the WHO China Country Of�ice was

informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause.

By January 5, SARS and MERS were ruled out as the cause. Four days later, preliminary investigation showed that it was a new type of coronavirus.

Then, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, suggesting person-to-person spread is occurring. As this was occurring, President Xi Jinping admitted, in a report carried by Channel News Asia, that China was facing a “grave situation” as death toll from the coronavirus outbreak kept growing.

State-run C h i n a Global Televis i o n Network also r e porte d that a doctor w h o had been t re a t i n g patients in Wuhan also died from the virus.

“This time I’m scared,” admitted Dr. Yi Guan, who played an important role in tracing the development of SARS and is the director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the University of Hong Kong. “Conservative estimates suggest that the scale of infection may eventually be 10 times higher than SARS,” he pointed out.

The Geneva-based

World Health Organization (WHO) referred to the situation as a “public-health emergency of international concern.” Some scientists believe that it is only a matter of time before the United Nations health agency will declare pandemic status. This happens when it occurs over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population.

According to the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, infectious diseases are caused by tiny living creatures called germs (microbes). They are found everywhere – in the air; on food, plants and animals; in soil and water –on just about every other surface, including the body.

You can get infected by touching, eating, drinking or breathing something that contains a germ.

Germs can also spread through animal and insect bites, kissing and sexual contact. Vaccines, proper hand washing and medicines can help prevent infections.

Infectious agents come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Mayo Clinic says categories of microbes include: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans and helminths. Bacteria are onecelled germs that multiply quickly and may release chemicals which can make you sick. Some infections caused by bacteria include strep throat, tuberculosis, and urinary tract infections.

Viruses, smaller than cells, are capsules that contain genetic material, and use your own cells to multiply. They are responsible for causing numerous dis-

eases, including acquired immune de�iciency syndrome (AIDS), common cold, genital herpes, in�luenza, measles, chickenpox and shingles.

Fungi, on the other hand, are primitive plants, like mushrooms or mildew. Yeast, another type of fungus, is a necessary ingredient in most types of bread. While some are edible, there are fungi that can cause illness. For one, they are responsible for skin conditions such as athlete’s foot and ringworm.

Protozoans are single-celled animals that use other living things for food and a place to live. Many protozoans call your intestinal tract home and are harmless. But they cause diseases such as giardia, malaria and toxoplasmosis.

Helminths – which comes from the Greek word for “worm” – are actually larger parasites that include tapeworms and roundworms. If this parasite – or its eggs – enters the body, it takes up residence in the intestinal tract, lungs, liver, skin or brain, where it lives off the body’s nutrients.

Dr. Dennis Pirages, an American professor of International Environmental Politics in the Department of Government and Politics and the University of Maryland, consider infectious disease as a more serious threat than terrorism.

“Measured in numbers of premature deaths and associated physical sufferings, the biggest source of human insecurity, past and present is the dreaded Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse -- infectious disease,” wrote Dr. Pirages in a chapter which

appeared in a State of the World Report published by Worldwatch Institute.

Infectious disease kills more people than those who perished in wars.

“Over the centuries, the number of deaths and injuries from military combat have paled in comparison to those from disease. It is estimated that all the wars of the twentieth century killed 111 million combatants and civilians, an average of about 1.1 million a year. Communicable diseases are now killing 14 times as many people annually.”

But despite this, relatively few resources from public treasures have been devoted to dealing with infectious disease. “Reducing the worldwide death toll from infectious disease should receive the highest priority,” Dr. Pirages urged.

Getting sick is a common experience, and most people encounters with disease organisms cause relatively little long-term damage to victims. “Human immune systems have coevolved with a variety of potential pathogens and have developed defenses over time for dealing with most of them,” explained Dr. Pirages.

However, signi�icant outbreaks of disease can occur. This happens when people encounter new pathogens or new serotypes of old ones. “But even most of these unfamiliar pathogens do relatively little damage to victims, and symptoms disappear after a few days,” said Dr. Pirages. “Occasionally, however, virulent and debilitating pathogens emerge for which immune systems

PLANT-BASED DIET

THE DESIRE to search Filipino recipes that are plant-based has consumed me. The quest to eat deliciously even though I’m a transitioning vegan has grown greater each day I quit eating animal-based products altogether.

Vegan meat or meat substitutes have helped curb my cravings for the real thing. I don’t think I’ll ever be more thankful for meat substitutes— they keep me on track.

The thing I struggle most with is cooking plant-based meals that resonate well with our Pinoy tastebuds. It’s a fact that there’s a lot of recipes out there but quite limited really.

There’s not a lot of Asian dishes that, and with Filipino cuisine, we got a lot of meat in our recipes. I never realized how meat was central to our food and culture that whole parties even revolve around meat (lechon, I am talking about you).

Start with what you won’t miss Some people went cold turkey and quit everything animal-based altogether. Some chose to do it gradually. It’s different for each person, but the best thing you could do is to stop eating what you won’t miss.

If you’re not exactly fond of processed meat, then you could go on without it. Maybe list down things you love eating, top of mind, and stick to those.

Add more plant-based and whole foods into your meals.

There’s nothing like a full, satiated feeling after a good hearty and healthy meal—minus the guilt. When eating whole foods and plant-based products, you can almost always indulge, especially with your favourite leafy greens.

Let your tastebuds (and mind) explore Try plant-based or vegan res-

starving yourself and being in a sour mood just because you ate eggs or had dairy (the most common culprit to baby vegans’ relapses).

Keep your plant-based journey a low profile This keeps off unwanted pressure, questions and unsolicited advice from people who might mean well but would generally be unhelpful for beginners. My

personal take on this is that keeping a low profile on your new lifestyle change helps keep you focused and doesn’t muddle up the reason why you switched in the first place.

You don’t need to be 100% plant-based all the time (to start) Sometimes we don’t have control over what we can eat.

ighty Sports made history for Philippine hoops when it became the �irst non-Middle Eastern club to win the Dubai International Basketball Championship.

The Filipino club came through with a massive third quarter attack to dethrone Lebanon’s Al Riyadi, 92-81, in the 31st edition of the tournament.

A sizable crowd of Filipino fans watched Mighty’s coronation at Shabab Al-Ahli Club in the United Arab Emirates.

The title sweep was Mighty Sports’ third since winning the Jones Cup in Taiwan in 2016 and 2019.

“We are overjoyed with the team’s latest achievement,” said Mighty Sports owner Alexander Wongchuking.

“We never thought to win the event much more by a sweep despite the short time of preparation.”

avao City’s Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders needed a wake up call to �inally get rid of a tough Unibersidad de Zamboanga Wildcats in Monday’s opener of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Mindanao Finals at the Davao City Recreation Center.

They got it from a two-handed slam from beanpole slotman Paul Turco in the dying seconds of the third period to ignite a big �inish in the fourth period.

That highlight reel was orchestrated by VJ Marquez’s spectacular dish leading to the vicious slam which marked the beginning of the Crusaders comefrom-behind victory over the Wildcats 79-72.

The youth-laden Crusaders appeared sluggish in the get-go, coming out with poor shooting and costly er-

rors. On the other hand, the seasoned Wildcats made buckets out of HCDC’s blunders and maintained a seven-point lead all throughout the �irst 30 minutes of the game.

The Crusaders, who took the last slot in the Mindanao Finals despite the heartbreaking loss against the Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFC) Sailors in the Collegiate Sponsors League (CSL) Escandor Cup Finals, didn’t look like they belong in the best-of-Mindanao tournament organized by the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas 11 under the leadership pf regional director and Presidential Adviser for Sports Glenn Escandor.

That Turco dunk reminded them of their mission.

The 6’5 center shone brightest for the Crusaders with 20 points,

15 of which came in the third and fourth quarters. Marquez led the Crusaders in scoring with 22 points while Montero made 15.

Shaq Dimacuta only had four points but his off-the-board put back from a back-toback offensive rebound punched the �irst deadlock of the game barely 52.5 seconds in the third quarter.

From there, the Crusaders took the lead, held strong on it and never looked back to draw the �irst blood in the competition which served as the quali�ier for the National Finals.

HCDC will face next the eighth-time defending champion Holy Trinity College (HTC) of General Santos Wildcats.

Meanwhile, Mats College of Technology (MCT) Navigators dumped STI College of Cagayan de Oro City, 9673, in the second game.
