Spotted LPA to bring rains in Davao, nearby provinces

R

esidents in Davao City and provinces within and outside the Davao Region will expect rains in coming days as state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) 900 kilometers east of Davao City as of 3:00 a.m. today, Monday, April 8.

In its 4 a.m. advisory on Monday, PAGASA said the LPA is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression but expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of Mindanao and some areas in the Visayas.

Moderate to heavy rains with lightning and strong winds due to thunderstorms is being experienced in some areas in Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental, Bukidnon, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Camiguin, Zamboanga City, Basilan, and Sulu, according to PAGASA. Meanwhile, the easterlies will continue to affect in the remaining parts of the country.

PAGASA also advises residents in the area to be of alert on possible �lash�loods during severe thunderstorms.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council

(NDRRMC) issued an advisory on Monday directing its regional of�ices to monitor the LPA and undertake precautionary measures in their Area of Responsibility (AOR).

NDRRMC also emphasized proactive measures including pre-emptive evacuations.

The local government of Davao City has already dispatched advisories to communities within river systems, to include Lipagas River, Talomo River, Matina River, Davao River, Bunawan River, and Lasang River to be alert and be prepared for possible evacuations.

“We will conduct weekly test and examination to update the status of the red tide. As much as we can, we will make it twice a week,” Millana said.

PDEA seizes highest volume of illegal drugs

uthorities seized a total of PHP5.27 billion worth of shabu in the �irst quarter of the year, posting the highest volume of illegal drugs seized in the country’s drug law enforcement history, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Sunday.

PDEA Director General Aaron N. Aquino said in the �irst quarter of 2019, the agency seized a total of 776.06 kilos of shabu worth PHP5.27 billion, surpassing the combined seizure of 672.42 kilos of shabu worth PHP4.58 billion from the �irst quarters of 2009 to 2018 by 103.64 kilos worth PHP704,752,000.

“This is the highest recorded shabu seizure for the �irst three months of the year in PDEA history. It also more than doubled compared to the second highest �irst quarter seizure which was recorded in 2015 with 314.47 kilos worth PHP2.14 billion,” Aquino said in a statement.

“This volume of seizures is an indication that we are conducting high-impact operation and hitting high-value targets,” the PDEA chief said, adding that the agency is also focused on the implementation of anti-drug advocacies such as Balay Silangan which caters surrendered drug personalities, and Sagip Batang Solvent which focuses on children hooked on illegal drugs.

ardinal Orlando Quevedo, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Cotabato on Saturday warned the public against falling prey to a scam using his name to solicit funds allegedly to pay for his hospital bills.

“Warning po. This is a scam. Galing daw sa akin,” Quevedo said of the text message purportedly coming from him, to raise funds for his alleged ‘triple heart (sic) bypass operation.”

The message reads: “Hi. How are you? Tried calling.

I am so sorry to disturb you.I am really having second thoughts of messaging you kay maulaw gyud ko (I am ashamed). I just would like to personally

ask for help for my hospital bill. I am at the moment scheduled for a triple heart bypass operation. Please keep this as a con�idential message as only few people knows that I am about to undergo the surgery.”

The message continues with a note that the sender’s friend from General Santos City — and the name of the friend is mentioned — “also pledged to share. Hope to hear from you soon. Damo gid nga salamat and God bless!”

Early Durian season, lower production due to El Niño

avao Durian Council chairman Larry Miculob announced on Monday, April 8, that the durian season will come earlier than expected this year. However, the Davao Region’s production of the so-called King of Fruits is seen to decline by 20% due to El Niño.

“The durian season might be early this year, papasok ito ng August kasabay ng Kadayawan (Kadayawan sa Dabaw celebration) but the production might be smaller,” Miculob, during the Kapehan sa Dabaw held at the Annex of SM City Davao yesterday, said.

The Davao Durian Council chairman said Davao Region normally produces over 50 million kilos of durian each year with 30 million kilos coming from Davao City.

Investors in Taiwan have the highest retirement savings, with personal income set aside good for 4.5 years.

They are followed by investors in China and Indonesia who both have retirement savings that can last for 4.1 years.

The survey underscored the huge gap between Filipino investors’ current and ideal retirement savings.

They also believe that savings equivalent to 2.1 years’ worth of personal income is enough, remarkably low compared with the regional average of 12 years.

Henson said MISI results indicate that neighbor countries are “more active and

more aware in terms of preparing for their retirement.”

“What we found in the surveys that we done over the years is that Filipinos are really more optimistic in terms of their attitude towards investment and �inances,” she said.

“We are always happier about the results of our investments or the returns, we are always more optimistic even we are falling behind our savings goals, (thinking that) we can catch up. That optimism actually I think makes us maybe a little bit too con�ident that we can achieve the same goals within less time,” she explained.

On 14 March 2019, joint operatives of the CMS-BSP and the National Bureau of Investigation Lucena District Of�ice (NBI-LUCDO) arrested suspect Ronnie Espiritu while in the act of committing the crime of defacing and removing the core metal of the 10-Piso coin, which is part of the 2001 BSP Coin Series.

His companion, suspect Rodolfo Corral who was present during the actual operation, was also arrested. Corral had previous knowledge of the criminal acts of Espiritu and even uploaded a coin mutilation video in his social media account last January.

The video went viral and attracted the attention of authorities. Several mutilated Philippine coins and implements used by the suspects were found in plain view and subsequently seized by the CMSBSP and the NBI-LUCDO. Under Section 50 of Republic Act 7653, otherwise known as “The New Central Bank Act”, the BSP is vested with police authority to investigate, make ar-

rests, and conduct searches and seizures in accordance with law for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of the currency.

Charges were �iled against the suspects before the Of�ice of the Provincial Prosecutor, Lucena City for violation of Presidential Decree 247 (Prohibiting and Penalizing Defacement, Mutilation, Tearing, Burning or Destruction of Central Bank Notes and Coins) and Republic Act 10175 (An Act De�ining Cybercrime, Providing for the Prevention, Investigation, Suppression and the Imposition of Penalties Therefor and for Other Purposes).

The suspects are currently under the custody of the NBI-LUCDO. On Feb. 19, 2019, the BSP issued a statement warning the public that willful defacement, mutilation, tearing, burning or destruction of Philippine banknotes and coins are punishable by a �ine of not more than PHP20,000.00 and/or imprisonment of not more than �ive years under Presidential Decree 247.

The BSP encourages the public to report any information on mutilation of Philippine currency to the nearest police station or law enforcement agency for appropriate action or contact the CMS-BSP for assistance at telephone numbers 988-4833 and 926-5092. (BSP PR)

Dominguez bats for public ethic that respects nature

inance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III in a statement on Sunday underscored the need for fresh efforts to instill in the public consciousness the importance of a mutually bene�icial relationship between man and nature, which is the underlying goal behind the ongoing efforts to save the Philippine eagle from extinction.

The Philippine eagle, which personi�ies the nation through its courage, strength and grace, also represents its predicament, which is “a general lack of appreciation for what needs to be done to conserve our wildlife -- and, ultimately, to conserve our communities,” said Dominguez, who used to chair the board of trustees of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) and was former Minister of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources during the Corazon Aquino administration from 1986 to 1987.

Dominguez, who remains an active contributor to efforts to help save the Philippine eagle, invited the public to �ind the time to watch a documentary on the country’s national bird created by Emmy-winning cinematographer Neil Rettig to inspire them in helping preserve “this magni�icent symbol of the Philippines.”

“I hope that through this �ilm, we could reach out to ordinary citizens to help in the effort to conserve this truly majestic bird. There is an African saying that goes: It

takes a village to raise a child.

In the case of the endangered Philippine eagle, it will take a nation to help it prevail,” Dominguez said at the inaugural screening of the documentary titled “To Save Our Eagle” held recently at the Ayuntamiento de Manila auditorium of the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) central of�ice in Intramuros, Manila.

The 45-minute documentary �ilmed in ultra-high de�inition was produced by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in partnership with the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Rettig followed a family of Philippine eagles for �ive months until its eaglet left its nest.

Dominguez described Rettig’s �ilm as a “work of passion.”

“The Philippine eagle is said to represent the nation through its courage, strength and grace. It also represents our predicament. The plight of the Philippine eagle is due to the loss of habitat and a general lack of appreciation for what needs to be done to conserve our wildlife -- and, ultimately, to conserve our communities,” Dominguez said.

He said that “in this sense, this �ilm is more than being just about the Philippine eagle. It is about building a new awareness about the symbiosis between a sustainable natural environment and a contented human community. It is about building a vigorous public ethic that respects and appreciates nature.” (DOF PR)

Globe Telecom’s program spreads to more schools, communities

G

lobe Telecom’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) spreads to more schools and communities in various parts of the country as employee volunteers act as mentors to create a generation of responsible digital citizens.

Since the start of this year, a number of Globe employees fondly called “Ka-Globe Ambassadors” have held talks in various educational institutions in Mindanao such as at the La Salle Academy in Iligan City and the University of Mindanao in Davao City. These talks were all well-attended, particularly by Grade 10 and college students, respectively, of these schools.

In Metro Manila, KaGlobe Ambassadors talked about the program in two different occasions which were attended by PLAN International’s community facilitators, as well as the humanitarian organization’s youth facilitators and community student leaders.

Launched in 2016, DTP has become a venue for Ka-Globe Ambassadors to share their knowledge with the students about the proper way of using the internet so that these young citizens can protect

themselves against criminal elements lurking online while at the same time, be guided in achieving their life goals.

“I always �ind teaching as a Ka-Globe DTP Ambassador to be a very enriching and ful�illing experience. Not everyone is given the opportunity and the venue to share and in�luence our youth in matters that are critical in shaping our community and I feel very privileged to be able to carry out this responsibility,” said Chari Javelosa.

She added: “It is very important that we are able to foster responsible digital citizenship as people are spending so much time on the digital space and more and more of our decisions and actions are being based on the information we �ind online.”

Another Ka-Globe Ambassador, Jim Lubguban from Iligan City, said he is “more energized” after every class. “Teaching is exhilarating, I never feel more energized than after a class that has gone well. It was rewarding for me to impart knowledge to the students and to make them realize the importance of being accountable for their actions related to our Program on the digital thumbprint,” he said.

Globe is one of the country’s few companies that nurture its people’s innate desire to help by providing every employee with one day of “volunteer time-off” every year to pursue their chosen advocacy. It also encourages “volunteaming” where employees are free to organize themselves in groups to pursue their advocacies.

DTP includes four learning modules, namely Digital Insight, Digital Impact, Digital Ambition, and Digital Discernment which are conceptualized and designed to increase students’ knowledge of digital citizenship and cyber safety. The modules involve

taking a careful look at the online behavior of kids and helping them develop insights on how the online world can in�luence them in making choices.

The program’s goals of promoting the responsible use of the internet and protecting the safety of the students have indeed become an effective tool based on a study conducted by Nielsen in 2017 which showed an increase in the number of students practicing at least one security measure to protect their information online, a large reduction in the number of those who have random interaction with strangers online, and a signi�icant increase in the number of students who are now aware of how their online information is used by websites and apps.

In an assessment made

by Karrikins Group on the DTP, it was also noted that students who attended the workshops were highly satis�ied with the program.

All the teachers agreed that their students were highly engaged in their sessions.

RPRH Law advocates move forward with challenges, gains

ive years ago today, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 or the RPRH Law in a stunning decision that ended more than 15 years of �ighting for its passage and defeating the pressure put up by the Catholic church, its staunchest opposition.

Chi Laigo Vallido, director for programs and advocacy of the Forum for Family Planning and Development (The Forum), one of the advocacy organizations at the forefront of the RH movement, recalled the day the measure was Supreme Court-certi�ied as a law. “I will never forget the words ‘not unconstitutional’ as then Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Teodore Te read the decision.”

Like Vallido, Los Angeles based actor-producer Giselle Toengi-Walters was with about 200 other RH advocates outside the SC compound in Baguio City that day. “It’s been �ive years but I remember with pride how I was part of something greater that I could have imagined.”

The High Court ruled the RPRH Law as lawful after it �irst stopped its implementation four months as soon as it took effect on March 18, 2013. The Court issued a status quo ante order after Pro-Life Philippines Foundation Inc. and other Catholic Church groups questioned what they claimed was the law's violation of the constitutional provisions guaranteeing the right to life.

But barely a year since

the SC decision, the High Court responded to yet another petition of Catholic groups led by ALFI – Alliance for the Family Foundation Philippines resulting in a two-year SC temporary restraining order (TRO) on implants and contraceptives from June 2015 to November 2017.

However, pro-RH organizations like The Forum, which works with local community networks in promoting reproductive health and rights, was never stopped on its tracks.

"We need to move forward and implement the law because lives are at risk and because we are seeing slight improvements in our RH situation.”

Vallido said.

One proof of this is the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS)'s �inding of a signi�icant decline in the fertility of Filipino women to a statistical average of 2.7 children, down from 3.0 in 2013. This decline was associated with an increase in the use of modern family planning methods by over 40% of currently married women, or roughly 2 million women.

But Vallido said there are still many things that need to be done because the other indicators do not look good, such as in 2017 according to Philippine Statistics Authority, there were 1.7 million registered live births or 3 babies born per minute. “But far too many babies are also dying. Neonatal deaths based on the 2017 NDHS is 14 per 1,000 live births and 21 for infant mortality.

EDITORIAL Consider the bike lanes It is just sad it has to take the life of a bike lane advocate to rekindle the need for Davao City to establish bike lanes and bike paths.

Salvador “Jun” Paholio, known in the cycling community as “Father of Davao City Cycling”, died after getting hit by a taxi on Sunday afternoon while riding his bicycle for a leisurely weekend ride.

The long-time coach, cycling of�icial, and race organizer, left a trail that’s probably hard to duplicate in the local cycling landscape. He has sel�lesly dedicated his life to the sport and helped cyclists achieve their dreams, many of those went on to become professionals and later earned jobs here and abroad.

Jun dedicated his life too in promoting safety riding in the city and advocated for bike lanes and paths for bicycle-riding commuters and cyclists.

In 2010, the bicycle ordinance of Davao City �inally got the approval of the City Council authored by the late city councilor Leo Avila III. The ordinance was supposed to have four phases in the implementation, the �inal

of which is the establishment of bicycle lanes in selected streets in the city.

Now 9 years after, the bike lanes construction phase has never materialized.

The ordinance aims to promote the use of bicycles to buffer the high and �luctuating cost of fuel for motor vehicles. It is also seen to help curb the ill effects of carbon emission and protect the environment from pollution, which contributes to global warming and climate change.

As of last month, the debate on the bike lanes remained stalled after some city of�icials insist it is not feasible because of the city’s narrow roads. If only the city of�icials studied the successful models in many parts of the world like Australia, the size of the road actually did not matter. What is important is the willingness to allocate a portion of the road, ideally at least one meter, for bike lanes.

May Jun’s death rekindle the �ire to re-open the bike lanes project. It’s a pity of there will be more cycling deaths on the rode simply because we cannot share it with the bicycle-riding commuters of this city.

TO BE RICH AND FAMOUS? When I was still in college, one of the most-often played songs in the radio was “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” Memorable lines include these: “And as for fortune and as for fame I never invited them in. Though it seems to the world they were all I desired.”

To some people, fame is offered on a silver platter. Remember the precocious Tatum O’Neal? Being the daughter of her famous father, she was given the supporting role inPaper Moon.

She became the toast of the tinsel town and even snatched an Oscar trophy for her debut performance.

“The love of fame is almost another name for the love of excellence; or it is the ambition to attain the highest excellence, sanctioned by the highest authority, that of time,” said William Hazlitt. “Fame is a bee,” wrote poet Emily Dickinson. “It has a song. It has a sting. Ah, too, it has a wing.”

In other words, being famous is not forever just as a person can never be young forever. So, one wonders: Where is Tatum O’Neal now? Perhaps the words of Charles Sumner should remind us: “Whatever may be

the temporary applause of men, or the expressions of public opinion, it may be asserted without fear of contradiction, that no true and permanent fame can be founded, except in labors which promote the happiness of mankind.”

Alan Bennett adds, “Those who have known the famous are publicly debriefed of their memories, knowing as their own dusk falls that they will only be remembered for remembering someone else.”

Rick Warren, the famous author of The Purpose Driven Life and church pastor of Saddleback Church in California, knows this. He never dreams of becoming rich and famous. When interviewed by Paul Bradshaw recently if what is the purpose of a person’s life here on earth, he replied, “Life is preparation for eternity. We were made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in heaven.”

He further explained, “(Our life here on earth) is the warmup act - the dress rehearsal. The day is soon coming when Jesus will raise us from our graves and take us to be with Him. God wants us to practice here on earth how we will live in eterni-

ty. We were made by God and for God, and until you �igure that out, life isn’t going to make sense.”

Recently, Warren’s wife, Kay, has been diagnosed of having an incurable cancer. “Life is a series of problems: you are in one now, you’re just coming out of one, or you’re getting ready to go into another one.”

From the Bradshaw interview, Warren came up with these words of wisdom: “I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don’t believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it’s kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life.”

Talking the good things and the bad things, Warren stated, “No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for.”

The American pastor said that we have to deal with both the good and the bad that life brings.

“Actually, sometimes

learning to deal with the good is harder,” he pointed out. “For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don’t think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease.”

With the money pouring in, he remembered II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72. “We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions, for popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures, guilt, bitterness, materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God’s purposes (for my life)?”

Today, when Warren gets up in the morning, “I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn’t put me on earth just to ful�ill a to-do list.

He’s more interested in what I am than what I do. That’s why we’re called human beings, not human doings.”

Or to quote the words of Alexander Smith, “I have learned to prize the quiet, lightning deed, not the applauding thunder at its heels that men call fame.”

In 1992, some of the world’s most successful businessmen held a special meeting in Chicago.

They were a group of high-powered specialists who knew the secret of making money. There was no doubt about where their altar was.

Let’s take a look at the lives of those men 27 years later.

Charles Schwab, president of the largest independent steel company, died bankrupt and lived on borrowed money the last years of his life. Samuel Insull, president of the greatest utility company, died a fugitive from justice, penniless in a foreign land. Howard Hopson, president of the largest gas company, was insane.

Arthur Cutter, the greatest wheat speculator, died abroad in poverty. Richard Whitney, president of New York Stock Exchange, was sitting in Sing Sing prison. Albert Fall, a member of the President’s cabinet, was pardoned from prison so he could die at home.

“Famous people before the public live an imagined life in the thought of others, and �lourish or feel faint as their self outside themselves grows bright or dwindles in that mirror,” Logan Pearsall Smith reminded.

MAY ‘DIGONG MAHARLIKA’ Say it correctly—may dugong Maharlika (with royal blood).

The recent buzz to change the country’s name to Maharlika was another headline-hogging presidential pronouncement. In a snap, pundits had their expert’s take on the issue.

Roughly four decades ago, WE Forum, an anti-administration ‘alternative press,’ came out with a �ive-part article on ‘Maharlika,’ which came out after then President Ferdinand E. Marcos announced his intention to rename the country.

The well-researched serial, written by war veteran and �irst College Editors Guild of the Philippines president Eulogio Rodriguez, exposed the roots of the word, tracing its provenance to Sanskrit, which means ‘big phallus.’ Past Hindu royalties, who coined the term, were presumably known more for their big genitalia than having royal bloodlines. Overtime, phallic size was associated with the royalties.

President Duterte’s main reason in changing the country’s title was anchored on erasing the vestiges of King Philip II of Spain, after whom the country was named, and

rename it maharlika, an ancient mythical Filipino social class. Contrary to Duterte’s claim, King Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), was not a dictator. The Encyclopedia Brittanica describes him as follows: “During his reign the Spanish empire attained its greatest power, extent, and in�luence, though he failed to suppress the revolt of the Netherlands (beginning in 1566) and lost the ‘Invincible Armada’ in the attempted invasion of England (1588).

“Philip was the son of the Holy Roman emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. From time to time, the emperor wrote Philip secret memoranda, impressing on him the high duties to which God had called him and warning him against trusting any of his advisers too much.

Philip, a very dutiful son, took this advice to heart. From 1543 Charles conferred on his son the regency of Spain whenever he himself was abroad. From 1548 until 1551, Philip traveled inItaly, Germany, and the Netherlands, but his great reserve and his inability to speak �luently any language except Castilian made him unpopular with the German and Flemish nobility…

“By sheer hard work Philip tried to overcome the defects of this system. His methods have become famous. All work was done on paper, on the basis of consultas (that is, memoranda, reports, and advice presented him by his ministers).

In Madrid, or in the gloomy magni�icence of his monastic palace of El Escorial, which he built (1563–84) on the slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the king worked alone in his small of�ice, giving his decisions or, as often, deferring them… Philip was painstaking and conscientious in his cravings for ever more information, hiding an inability to distinguish between the important and the trivial and a temperamental unwillingness to make decisions.”

Changing a country’s name is a monstrous task. Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar (Burma), Thailand (Siam), Sri Lanka (Ceylon), and Vietnam (Indochina) may have junked their old names and adopted new ones but the consequent expense involved resulted in complications, something Filipinos will strongly oppose in a referendum.

First and foremost, are Filipinos willing to be called the new Maharlikans?

If one studies geography, it is not surprising to �ind that over two dozen countries of the world have been named after persons, and a similar number of dependent territories have also adopted the same practice. Let’s look at some of the nations named after people.

Bolivia, a central South American nation, is named after its conqueror, Spanish Simon Bolivar. China gets its tag from Emperor Qin, pronounced as ‘chin.’ Colombia comes from Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Marshall Islands comes from British navy of�icer John Marshall.

United States of America owes its sobriquet to Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

A number of nations get their name from saints or a combination of holy attributes: Dominican Republic (St. Dominic), Saint Kitts and Nevis (St. Christopher), Saint Lucia (St. Lucy), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (St. Vincent of Zaragosa), San Marino (St. Marinus), Sao Tomas and Principe (St. Thomas and the prince of Portugal), and El Salvador (The Savior Jesus Christ).

Meanwhile, Eswatini (Swaziland) is named after

King Mswati II. Israel is Jacob’s biblical name. Kiribati is local enunciation of British explorer Thomas Gilbert. Leichtenstein is in honor of a princely family with that surname. Mauritius is a tribute of Maurice of Nassau, the prince of Orange.

Mozambique comes from pre-Portuguese ruler Mussa Bin Bique, while Nicaragua is shortened from Nicarao, an indigenous chieftain.

Saudi Arabia is after founder Muhammad bin Saud.

Seycheles is named after French politician Jean Moreau de Sechelles. Solomon Islands comes from the King Solomon.

Uzbekiztan is in memory of Oz Beg Khan, the khan of the Golden Horde, while the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan gets its name from Hashim ibn Abd Manaf of the Hashemite and the Jordan River.

In Davao, some places, overtime, also adopted new labels. The towns of Santa Cruz (Labo), Malalag (Mercedes), Jose Abad Santos (Trinidad), Mabini (Cuambug), Tagum (Magugpo), Asuncion (Saug), San Vicente (Laak), Montevista (Camansa), Padada (Limonzo), Bansalan (Miral), Lupon (Sumlug), and Gov. Generoso (Sigaboy) were previously known by different names.

According to PAGASA, the LPA was located 900 kilometers east of Davao City.

While the weather disturbance is not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone, its trough or extension will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas and Mindanao.

The easterlies or the warm winds coming from the Paci�ic Ocean will continue to affect Metro Manila and the rest of the country where partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms will prevail.

PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza advised residents affected by the LPA trough and easterlies on possible �lash �loods during severe thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, a scorching 42.2°C heat index was recorded in Pasay City over the weekend, the hottest air temperature so far in Metro Manila since the dry season started. PAGASA said the maximum heat index of 42.2°C was observed at its NAIA station in Pasay City Sunday.

According to PAGASA, heat index refers to the actual feel of temperature, opposed to the temperature measured by a thermometer.

The high air temperatures and high relative humidity are the factors

considered in heat index which give high apparent temperatures or indices.

The state weather bureau considered heat indices of 41°C to 54°C as “dangerous,” meaning heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and a heat stroke is probable with continued activity.”

Meanwhile, heat indices of 32°C to 41°C calls for “extreme caution” in which heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible and continuing activity could also result in heat stroke.

Megaworld’s net income jumps 17%, record high P15.8-B in 2018

egaworld, the country’s largest developer of integrated urban townships, saw its net income grow by 17% to P15.8-billion in 2018 from P13.6-billion (excluding P113-million non-recurring gain) the previous year.

Net income attributable to parent company ended at P15.2-billion by end-December 2018, a 17% jump from P13.0-billion in 2017 (excluding P113-million non-recurring gain).

Consolidated revenues grew about 15% to P57.4-billion in 2018 from the previous year’s P50-billion (excluding P113-million non-recurring gain).

The company’s rental businesses, comprising of of�ice and lifestyle mall leasing, strongly contrib-

uted to the topline, soaring 21% to P14.3-billion in 2018 from the previous year’s P11.8-billion. This contributed 25% of the total consolidated revenues during the year.

In 2018 alone, Megaworld has already achieved over 70% of its rental income target of P20-billion by end of next year.

Last year, Megaworld opened its biggest mall development outside of Metro Manila, the Festive Walk Mall in Iloilo Business Park, offering around 90,000 square meters in gross �loor area. It also opened two new community malls – the San Lorenzo Place in Makati City, and The Village Alabang in Las Piñas City.

Also last year, the company closed a historic deal

in Philippine real estate when it bagged the longterm lease contract to build the 25-storey Philippine Global Service Center of JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. It was regarded as the country’s biggest single lease transaction to date, with around 70,000 square meters of ‘build-to-suit’ of�ice spaces for a single company alone.

“We have already secured multiple pre-lease deals for our of�ice buildings as well that are in the pipeline until next year.

avao City has lost a sports leader who has dedicated his life to developing the sport of cycling.

Salvador “Jun” Paholio, long-time coach and former president of the Citywide Cycling Association of Davao (CICAD), died on Sunday afternoon after he was hit from behind by a taxi cab while riding his bicycle. Paholio was rushed to a nearby hospital but expired moments later after sustaining fatal head contusion.

We mourn the untimely passing away of Jun Paholio, active in cycling and in the Davao City Sports Council,” said former city councilor and Davao City

Sports Council president Peter Tiu Lavina.

Paholio served as the sports representative to the Davao City Sports Council for several years and spearheaded the sport’s development in the city by organizing regular cycling races and maintaining a stable of young and upcoming riders.

Among the cycling teams he formed were the Team Inday Sara and the Team Tapang at Malasakit. He also coached Davao City riders in the early stages of the Philippine National Games and served as of�icial in several national cycling tours like the Marlboro Tour and LBC Ronda Pilipinas.

llianz Philippines urged local football players to aim for international competitions as it kicks off the Mindanao leg of the Allianz National Youth Futsal Invitational (ANYFI) in Tubod, Lanao del Sur on April 13.

At the launching of the 2019 ANYFI here at the Marco Polo Hotel on Saturday, Rei Abrazaldo, the Brand Communications and Digital Director of Allianz Philippines, said Filipino players must aim for international competitions given the country’s rich talents.

“The sport of football has progressed a lot since we started our futsal invitational three years ago.

We have sent our most talented Filipino players in one of the best, if not the best, football camps in Asia and Europe,” Abrazaldo said.

Allianz Philippines is launching the campaign in Davao City to boost sports presence in Mindanao.

Abrazaldo said ANYFI will have local eliminations and the regional �inals. Allianz is seeing more than 4,000 players nationwide.

In Davao, Abrazaldo said a total of 40 teams are expected to compete in the local elimination round in May with the top four teams moving on to compete in the Mindanao quali�iers also to be held in Davao City on May 18 and 19.

On its third year, Allianz PNB Life Insurance, Inc. in partnership with the Henry V. Moran Foundation and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), is eyeing players from Mindanao during the Mindanao Regional Final Quali�ier rounds starting in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on April 13 and 14; Koronadal, South

Cotabato on May 8 and 9; and, in Davao City on May 18 and 19.

Davao City will also host the Mindanao Regional Finals on May 18 and 19.

The teams that will make to the regional �inals will receive food subsidies, options for free accommodations (for out of town teams) and even transportation subsidies from their home area to the tournament venue (for out of town teams).

Allianz will give three players the opportunity to join a football camp in Singapore and another three players will be sent to a camp in Munich.

Danny Moran, the chairman of the Henry V Moran Foundation, said the Philippines is teeming with talents in football.

We just need to give our youth the support and venue to further hone their skills and excel in the sport.

In the Philippines, Moran said, honing the talents of the Filipino football players can be achieved through futsal, which can be organized and played in gyms.

“It is proven across the world that futsal develops better football players,” he said.

Kevin Goco, head of PFF, said futsal is the world’s fastest growing indoor sport and has the potential in engaging more communities, creating world-class athletes and improving lives.

He said Futsal in the Philippines is focusing on grassroots sports development instead of forming national teams for international competitions.

Moran said grassroots development is crucial in the case of futsal because children are already capable of playing the game.

abawenyo �ighter John Vincent Moralde and compatriot Neil John Tabanao suffered stinging setbacks on Friday (April 6, PH Time) in a couple of non-title �ights at Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Moralde suffered a 3rd round knockout to undefeated American prospect Xavier Martinez.

Tabanao bowed to another undefeated American Angelo “El Chinito” Leo by a unanimous10-round decision. Leo scored his 17th straight win while Tabanao lost his 5th against 17 wins.

Martinez (14-0) kept his perfect record intact with a over 3rd knockout victory over Moralde (21-3). The Sacramento, California native didn’t waste any time in his ShoBox debut.

He rocked Moralde early and often throughout the opening stanza which put the Filipino in retreat mode. Martinez went right back to work in the 2nd round as Moralde had trouble adjusting to Martinez's power.

A big counter left hook sent Moralde crashing to the canvas early in the third. He would rise to his feet but a series of unanswered blows forced referee Tony Weeks to stop the bout. The time of the

Super featherweight prospect Andres Cortes (100) kicked off the ShoBox telecast with a bang by dominating Jahmal Dyer (9-1) over 8 rounds. The �inals scores were 78-73, 79-73 and 7874.

The Las Vegas resident told BoxingScene.com prior to the �ight that he planned on winning by knockout and while he didn’t get the stoppage he predicted, he dominated the �ight outside of the 4th round.

After a couple feeling out rounds Cortes and Dyer exchanged big punches in the third round. Cortes was being the aggressor and landed a series of power shots as he backed Dyer into the the ropes to end the round.

Cortes rushed Dyer, sensing he was still hurt to begin the 4th round. Cortes was picking Dyer apart until Dyer landed a perfect counter right that sent Cortes to the canvas. However Cortes came back strong and almost �loored Dyer as the bell sounded to end the round.

The Las Vegas native continued to dominate the 5th and 6th rounds. Dyer tried to �ight back but didn’t have any juice on his punches as he fought on unstable legs.
