Davao City Water District (DCWD) on Monday assured on-time recovery of water supply. This after the water interruption that lasted nearly three days in some parts of Davao City' �irst district and most parts of second district.

The water interruption not only affected residents but also upset businesses particularly water re�illing stations, laundry shops, and car wash establishments.

fter the House of Representatives approved its version of the bill postponing the 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to December 5, 2022, Dumper Partylist Representative Claudine "Dendee" Bautista, one of the principal authors of the bill, is optimistic the law will be passed the soonest.

Bautista made the statement on Saturday, November 9 during the distribution of relief goods with the Chinese Consulate Of�ice to earthquake victims in Davao del Sur. Bautista said the version of the Senate was also already passed last September, with the proposal to conduct subsequent elections triennially.

"So coming from the House (of Representatives), it was already approved and I think now all it really needs for it to be implemented is the signature of the president," Bautista said.

The lawmaker is con�ident that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will sign the bill as soon as possible, recalling the latter's urgency in his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) to make a bill that would postpone the village election that would help incumbent leaders to be ef�icient in �inishing their respective projects.

With all of that in the table, the polls are likely to be moved to 2022.

The relief operations

were conducted in three Municipalities of Davao del Sur including Bansalan, Matanoa and Magsaysay.

Chinese Consul General Li Lin said they have raised around P4million courtesy of friendship from the Chinese people.

Apart from the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Davao, Davao Fil-Chinese Multi-Sectoral Association, China Road and Bridge Corporation, CSCBC Philippines Branch, and CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd bankrolled the budget for the relief operation.

Lin said the monetary raised from the Chinese people were converted to daily essentials such as water, food, towels, and hygiene kits among others.

ernment Units (LGU)s and the 10th Infantry Division, 1002nd Brigade, and 73rd Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Bautista and Lin personally handed the relief goods to the people and held dialogues with the victims.

Bautista bared that her father Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista bought 2.8 hectares of land from his own pocket and donated it for the building of relocation sites for victims of the calamity since there was no assurance if the evacuees can still return home.

The Congresswoman also said she sets her sight in tapping private and government sectors to help fund for the relocations sites.

efense Secretary Del�in Lorenzana said Monday he was not inclined to recommend another extension of martial rule in Mindanao, calling instead for a tougher anti-terrorism law.

"Kung ako lang (If it's up to me) I will not recommend anymore the extension. Tagal na masyado (it's been too long)," he told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo.

Lorenzana said Congress' amendment of the Human Security Act would be a "better arrangement

than martial law" and would "give some teeth" to the country's law enforcement.

The military earlier said it supports amendments to the law, which would include a longer period of detention for alleged terrorists to 30 days from the current 3 days.

The restive south was �irst placed under martial law in 2017 following clashes in Marawi City between government forces and Islamic State-inspired militants in 2017.

Even after the city was liberated on Oct. 17, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte sought another extension for the whole 2018, and another until the end of 2019.

“As of 6 p.m. on November 10, the agency has given PHP38.8 million worth of aid to the 260,492 persons affected by the disaster from Regions 11 and 12,” said DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao in an interview.

“The food [grocery] packs that we give last for two days, so we give another batch each time. Depending on the assistance needed by the victims because it varies,” she said.

The DSWD Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) reported a total of 53,362 families or 260,492 persons were affected by the earthquake incidents in 317 barangays in Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

Of these, 11,830 families or 56,646 persons are taking temporary shelter in 75 evacuation centers.

Dumlao also acknowledged the efforts of private groups and individuals who extended help to the victims on the initiative.

“[Modernity has really improved] our transfer of information and level of awareness. It is heartwarming to know that there is assistance coming from the private sector,” she added.

On Friday, Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rolando Bautista made another visit to Kidapawan City, North Cotabato to personally oversee the department's continuous relief operations to affected families and individuals.

Bautista �irst visited the province on October 30, a day after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted central and southern Mindanao, to lead the provision of relief assistance to the survivors and assess the impact of the disaster.

Upon arrival in Koronadal City, he visited Erlinda Narciso, wife of Nestor Narciso, one of the fatalities in the earthquake to console and give cash assistance.

In Tulunan town, the DSWD chief condoled with the family of Maricel Marla, a pregnant woman who passed away during the tremor and extended �inancial assistance, aside from the burial assistance provided by the agency.

he Philippines is seeking more access for its agricultural products to the United States as American �irms eye the establishment of biofuel facilities in the country.

Philippine agriculture attaché Josyline Javelosa said there is great interest in the US for Philippine products such as okra, calamansi and coffee. Discussions with US of�icials are ongoing to determine how these products can enter the US market, she said.

At the same time, Javelosa said the Philippines is expanding the export of bananas, mangoes, and fresh young coconut.

“We continue to engage the US Department of Ag-

riculture on market access regulations for agricultural product exports from the Philippines,” she said.

“Hopefully we could improve the exports of Philippine products to the US.” Javelosa said renewable �irm Green Bison Co., on the other hand, is looking at the production of biomass fuel pellets from banana leaves, sugar cane bagasse and other �ibers, she said.

Another company, she added, is interested in es-

tablishing over 20 re�ineries to produce coco biodiesel.

Javelosa said the Philippines likewise asked the US to allow the entry of its pineapples in other ports as current shipments are limited to Guam, Northern Marianas Island, and the North Atlantic region.

With the short shelf life of some of its fruit exports, like mangoes, Javelosa said the Philippines also asked the USDA to waive the pre-inspection requirement for its agricultural products.

Such move, she said, would signi�icantly boost exports of the tropical fruit.

“We are trying to do away with the pre-waiver inspection for mangoes

because it entails more costs making our mango less competitive especially compared from the mango coming from the nearby Mexico,” Javelosa said.

The US remains the top single country market for Philippine food and agricultural products reaching $1.1 billion last year. As of 2018, the Philippines is the 11th largest agricultural export market of the US. Among the Philippines’ top food and agricultural exports to the US include tropical oils which amounts to $535 million, processed fruits and vegetables $168 million, tree nuts $113 million, fruits and vegetable juices $75 million and raw beet and cane sugar $61 million.

In an emailed statement on Monday, SMC said its packaging will utilize technology developed

by Philippine Bioresins Corp. for its products such as cement and feed sacks, grocery bags, and food packaging.

“Initially, we will use it for cement packaging.

What we will use is a biodegradable plastic woven packaging, or sack,” said SMC president and chief operating of�icer Ramon Ang. “This is proudly developed by Filipino inventors, using local materials, and made by local workers,” he added.

According to SMC, Philippine Bioresins was recently given an Environmental Technology Veri�ication certi�icate by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Industrial Technology De-

velopment Institute.

The veri�ication con�irmed that the biodegrable polypropylene produced by the company will be 64.65% degraded in 24 months, compared to non-biodegradable plastics that are 4.5% degraded in 24 months.

“We have always been looking for innovative environmental technologies, and we are excited about this development. We are looking forward to using biodegradable plastics, and this is just the beginning, as they are developing other technologies in this �ield,” said Ang. “We are very serious when it comes to sustainability. We have stopped our plastic bottled water business; we have taken on the challenge to reduce group-wide non-product water use by 50% by 2025, and we’ve poured more resources into major projects to clean up bodies of water as well as into research that supports plastic waste reduction,” said Ang.

ECONOMY 5 PH economic growth momentum rests on budget passage: analyst

he Philippine economy can grow higher than 6 percent as long as the 2020 budget is passed on time, an analyst said Monday.

Gross domestic product grew 6.2 percent in the third quarter on the back of a recovery in government spending that was weighed down by the delayed approval of the 2019 budget.

Increased liquidity in the market is also "very good for a healthy 2020," Security Bank executive vice president and head of wholesale banking

Edu Olbes said.

“I think there’s been lessons learned in terms of the delayed budget approval last year and so we see government acting to put budget approvals in place in a more timely way,” Olbes said.

“Our hope is that as long as government expenditures in infrastructure, which basically bene�it the construction sector, as those expenditures come online then you should see bene�its ripple up across the economy,” he said.

Senate set to tackle P4.1-T 2020 budget T he Senate is set to begin plenary debates Monday on the proposed ₱4.1-trillion 2020 budget.

Senate Finance committee chair Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said he will be sponsoring the committee report on the �iscal plan in plenary, in accordance with a timetable that eyes the budget to be transmitted to President Rodrigo Duterte by the third week of December at the latest.

Congress leaders are keen on avoiding another delayed passage of the budget, as it slowed down the country’s economy for two quarters this year.

“The experience has

only underscored that for us to maintain our country’s momentum and upward trajectory, we can afford no more delays, especially when public spending can account for up to 20 percent of the entire economy,” Angara said Sunday.

He assured that there is adequate funding for education, health and transportation infrastructure in the 2020 budget.

The passage of the 2019 budget was delayed due to accusations among lawmakers of allegedly

anomalous insertions, which were eventually vetoed by Duterte.

Allegations of “pork” remain, with Senator Pan�ilo “Ping” Lacson claiming that some ₱20 billion lump sum fundshave been inserted into allocations for several agencies.

House leaders have denied this.

House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said the lower chamber has realigned ₱9.52 billion from the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Commission on Elections to increase funding for 12 government agencies, including the Agriculture, Education and Health departments.

spokesperson, said in a separate mobile message.

“These guidelines ensure that the DOE is apprised of each step of CSPs, from the publication of the DU’s power supply & procurement plan on the DOE’s website, to the issuance of the invitation to bid (also published on the DOE’s website) to the submission to the DOE of the abstract of bids right after the opening of bids,” he added.

Observers from both the DOE and the Energy Regulatory Commission are always invited during pre-bid conferences and opening and submission of bids.

“Participating gencos even congratulated the TPBAC (Third-party Bids and Awards Committee) for a “well-conducted” CSP,” Zaldarriaga said.

ICSC calls for transparent bidding of power supply

he Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) on Monday called for an open and transparent bidding for power supply agreements (PSAs) of local distribution utility �irms.

There is a need for all distribution utilities to allow both existing and new power plants to join the bidding of their power requirements, ICSC senior policy advisor Pedro Maniego Jr. “In adherence to the prescribed spirit of free and fair competition, both existing and new power plants should be allowed to join Meralco’s upcoming bidding for a 1,200-megawatt power supply agreement,” he said.

fter three consecutive weeks of rollbacks, motorists will have to pay more for pump prices of gasoline, while consumers of diesel and kerosene will pay less this week.

In an advisory, Chevron Philippines Inc. (Caltex) said it will increase the price per liter of gasoline by P0.85, while lower diesel by P0.15 and kerosene by P0.10.

Cleanfuel and Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. will implement the same changes, excluding kerosene which the com-

panies do not carry.

The changes will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12 for Caltex and 6:00 a.m. for the rest of the �irm.

Similar adjustments were earlier announced

by Petro Gazz, Petron Corp., and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.

Recent data from the Department of Energy (DOE) showed the yearto-date adjustments of fuel prices stand at a net increase of P5.06 per liter for gasoline, P3.67 for diesel, and P0.86 for kerosene.

Time to shine

With her appointment as co-chair of the Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), Vice President Leni Robredo must already have something in mind on how to start her job. Afterall, she has been harping before of her opposition to the bloody drug war. At least some fundamental plan for now.

On Saturday, Senator Pan�ilo Lacson bared that the Vice President has conferred with him and agreed that a shift the drug war’s focus on “supply constriction” to target big-time drug lords instead of street peddlers is the main focus of the new strategy.

Robredo has openly criticized President Duterte’s anti-drug war, even to the point of calling for external party investigation. She had declared that she was amenable to a possible intervention of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), if the Philippine government fails to punish drug offenders. The 47-man UNHRC on July 11 adopted a reolution led by Iceland that seeks a probe into Duterte’s war on illegal drugs. The adoption of the resolution mandates UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet to present a “comprehensive” report on the drug war in the Philippines during the council’s 44th session in June 2020.

the investigation that would be initiated by the UNHRC, as he is only inclined to face a Philippine court under Philippine laws.

Based on data released by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on November 6, about 5,779 drug personalities died in legitimate police anti-drug operations from July 1, 2016 to Aug. 31, 2019.

Robredo wants a paradigm shift in the approach. How she will execute the plan is yet to be formulated.

For now, Robredo cannot complain about the support given to her by the agencies involved in the anti-illegal drugs campaign. Upon the directive of the President, agencies like the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency are all at her disposal to execute the plan once it is �inalized.

To be effective, Robredo needs to pursue a campaign free of in�luence and intervention by the other personalities of the opposition--some of those wanted her not to accept the designation.

This is Robredo’s time to prove her worth as an elected public of�icial worth her salt. She has not proven anything yet and this could be her biggest break.

THANKFULNESS With thousands of relief packs distributed and even more coming, it is clear that the spirit of community engagement is alive and well in the Davao region.

All this, despite the earthquake and the negative comments coming from certain quarters who sought to politicize the disaster.

What matters at this point is the recovery and reconstruction that needs to take place quickly in order to ensure business continuity. We cannot allow disruptions like this to affect our economic growth.

In the end it it up to use to help each other weather

any storm, political or natural. Be they through our taxes or our donations, the assistance needs to keep coming.

The reality is that international organizations have already regarded the Philippines is one of the most disaster prone areas on the planet, due to our geographical position within the typhoon belts of asia, and our position in the paci�ic ring of �ire exposing us to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Moving forward, there are a few good practices we can adopt At the enterprise level, Business Continuity Plan-

ning is essential to the survival and and continuous growth of our businesses and the economy. This allows us to make quick decisions and assure continuous operations at the soonest possible time. Likewise, it is vital that support networks and logistics systems for the immediate distribution

of relief goods and reconstruction activities be institutionalized further. Higher level cooperation between the DSWD, Local government units and civil society organizations to make sure that the relief is given where and when it is needed at the soonest possible time.

Thankfully, the response to this disaster has been tremendous and help has been given. The smiles on the faces and the grateful messages of those affected are proof positive that the helping network has been established.

The highlight of the trade mission to Japan from the Davao City Chamber included the signing of another sister chamber agreement, this time with Hitachinaka City, about 100 kilometers from Tokyo in Ibaraki prefecture. This city is home to the Hitachi companies and Komatsu.

This arrangement will surely boost business ties and create more opportunities for business exchange. This will mean more markets for our exports and other non traditional products such as Information Technology products.

A LADY VICE-GOVERNOR’S WRATH For displaying drunken indiscretion while under the in�luence of liquor, a judge was administratively charged by a lady vice-governor for acts of lasciviousness, resulting in his eventual dismissal from the service. The incident took place in the afternoon of August 19, 1972 inside Digoseña Restaurant in Digos, Davao del Sur. Records show that Judge Santiago lnutan of Sta. Maria, Davao del Sur, in a state of heavy intoxication, cocked his revolver inside the eatery, causing panic to all the people present. He also poked his gun on Roberto Doromal, threatening to kill him, “and lasciviously held… Cecilia de la Paz, who is the incumbent Vice Governor of Davao del Norte, and uttered some disgraceful and immoral words.” In response, the lady vice-governor �iled charges of (i) disgraceful and immoral conduct, (ii) drunkenness, and (iii) conduct prejudicial to the Judiciary against Inutan.

Doromal is the son-inlaw of the lady vice-governor who at the time of the incident was with her husband Ludovico dela Paz. In his comment dated December 16, 1972, the judge vehemently denied

the charges but justice undersecretary Efren Plana, on January 5, 1973, forwarded the complaint to judge Marcelino M. Francisco, executive district magistrate of the Court of First Instance (CFI) of Davao del Sur “for investigation, report and recommendation.”

It did not take long for the CFI judge to come out with his �indings, submitted on February 27, 1973. In his report, judge Francisco stated “the evidence presented had established satisfactorily, adequately and conclusively that the [municipal judge] committed the acts complained of” but did not make any recommendation on what penalty would be meted.

During the incident the drunken judge, records show, “could not walk straight, his hair was untidy, unkempt and falling on his forehead, and his face and eyes red.” He approached the lady vice-governor and companions, greeted the group by shaking their hands before settling himself on a space not too far from where Dela Paz’s group was seated.

The initial �indings, collaborated by the police, show the waitresses scurried after the judge “held his revolver in his right

hand with his thumb arched over the �iring pin and with his other hand rolling the ball of his gun” and later, after returning from the restroom, pulled out his gun from his waist and poked it on Doromal’s left side, forcing the vice-governor to introduce herself as the sister of Sen. Alejandro D. Almendras. Her disclosure, however, angered the judge who cussed, saying “were it not for [Almendras] I would be in a higher position now.”

The CFI judge’s �indings related: “[The drunken judge] then held [the vice-governor’s] left arm rubbing it up and down.

After respondent Judge released complainant’s arm, the owner of the restaurant took him out, with his gun remaining on the table.

Complainant took the gun and placed it in her handbag but when she saw respondent Judge coming back, she went to the counter and deposited the gun with the cashier of the restaurant.”

The case, docketed as Administrative Matters No. 201-MJ, reached the Supreme Court. On June 30, 1975, in an en banc session, a ruling was issued.

The high court agreed with some of the observations made by the investigated judge saying:

(i) The vice-governor “has no ulterior motives to testify falsely against the [judge who was president of the Municipal Judges League of Davao del Sur] because she never knew the respondent prior to August 19, 1972,” (ii) the judge’s drunkenness was corroborated by the police, who reported he was “talking harshly, misbehaving and under the heavy in�luence of liquor,” and (iii) the charge of disgraceful and immoral conduct was not “prompted by lustful desire” but was “the evil effects of his drunkenness.”

The high court chastised the judge for having “�lagrantly transgressed upon the established norm for judicial behavior,” adding his “undue surrender… to the proddings of his self-de�ined pleasure failed him in his duty to conduct himself within the con�ines of property and to behave in a manner shorn of reproach.” The �inal verdict stipulated: “The judge is the visible representation of the law and, more importantly, of justice. From him, the people draw their will and awareness to obey the law.

They see in him an intermediary of justice between two con�licting interests, specially in the station of

municipal judges, like respondent Judge, who have that close and direct contact with the people before anybody else in the judiciary. Thus, for the judge to return that regard, he must be the �irst to abide by the law and weave an example for the others to follow. He should be studiously careful to avoid even the slightest infraction of the law.

“But here is a judge who stands across the path of the law. Unperturbed by judicial conscience, he breached the very law he was sworn to uphold. Perhaps in a misplaced display of the in�luence of his of�ice, he unrestrainedly and openly intoxicated himself in a public place, caused disturbance and alarm, and poked his gun at an innocent man. He willfully moved away from the behavioral injunctions of his of�ice and let himself caught by the reaches of misconduct and misdeeds.

Such conduct need be sanctioned and must, therefore, be drawn to a close. It throws an indelible stain on the judiciary.”

The Supreme Court, in conclusion, ruled the judge was without doubt guilty of drunkenness and conduct injurious to the judiciary that were the bases for his removal from the service.

According to Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) Operations Head Yuri Sarmiento, it was in 2010 when they introduced the electric vehicle eSakay.

“At that time, we started the Green Route here in Makati, covering Legaspi and Salcedo Village. We initially had three vehicles that provided free rides.

Now, we are glad that with the help of companies such as Allianz PNB Life, we are able to sustain our efforts in transitioning to green alternatives of mass transportation,” Sarmiento said.

He also said that the initial objective for the deployment was to present an alternative technology to run vehicles that can help address the problem of air pollution.

As for PNB Life, the Ejeepney is just one of their corporate social responsibility

activities with great cocnern of the environment.

“As a global company, Allianz has always been mindful about its impact on the communities it serves, especially today with the threat of climate change. We are glad to have found a partner in eSakay to promote our message of environmental sustainability, and we are looking forward to launching more projects that will lead to a healthier planet,” Grenz concluded.

Apart from being an environment-friendly vehicle, ejeepneys also ensures the comfort for passengers. Each vehicle can accomodate 23 seaters and up to 10 standing passengers.

For the security of the passengers, eSakays are equipped with a dash cam, GPS tracking system and CCTV cameras.

There’s no need to worry with the heat while on transit as there are multiple fans installed plus they offer internet access to all passengers. USB ports are also available for charging if your phone batteries are running low. How cool is that? Not only did it limit the cause of air pollution but it also gives much comfort for every passenger.

“We are also developing software that would allow passengers to download an app so that they can monitor the vehicles,” Sarmiento said. eSakay will soon be launching an electronic payment system as well. Currently, passengers pay their fares in cash.

The minimum fare is PhP9, the same as that of regular jeepneys.

Aside from the Makati and Mandaluyong routes, there are on-going planning sessions to bring the E-jeepneys to Pampanga next year.

Meanwhile, goofy-footer Philmar Alipayo (Siargao) displayed one of the most impressive performances in the Men’s Open Shortboard quarterfinals. Riding only four waves in the 20-minute heat, Alipayo posted the highest total heat score of 15.00 points.

A perfect combination of set waves, powerful verticals and critical maneuvers rewarded him with the highest single-wave score of 8.00 points. “The waves were perfect during my heat, and I was just waiting for the perfect wave to come,” Alipayo said.

Neil Sanchez (Baler) who previously grabbed the championship from Alipayo during the 15th Lanuza Surfing Festival and the 2017 Oakley Pro Baler.

“It was an advantage for Philmar because he’s already an excellent surfer and the waves here are favouring his front side,” said Sanchez.

“When you know you’re up against a former PSCT grand champion, you need to fight for the win and do your best,” Sanchez adds.

“That’s all we’re here to do anyway—our best.”

Not one to back down, Sanchez gave a major exchange of maneuvers on his frontside during his heat with Alipayo. With the clock ticking and priority over, Sanchez tried his best to get the score he needed to progress but fell short as his best wave of 6.50 points, wasn’t enough to get him through.

“I’m looking forward to the PSCT leg in La Union this November. The waves will be a definite advantage to the regular-foot surfers.”

Sanchez said.

It’s going to be an epic fifth day with the semi-finals of the 9th Guiuan Odyssey Waves. If the wave conditions are right, we’re looking forward to watching the heats of Edito “Piso” Alcala Jr (Siargao) versus Jay-r Esquivel (La Union) and John Mark “Marama” Tokong versus Philmar Alipayo both from Siargao.

IWANT resurrects Celso Ad Castillo’s legendary psychological horror film “Patayin Mo sa Sindak si Barbara” with a modern re-telling of its story in the iWant original movie “Barbara Reimagined,” which is now streaming for free.

The new iteration is directed by Benedict Mique (“ML” and “MOMOL Nights”) and Celso’s late son Christopher Ad Castillo, with Nathalie Hart playing Barbara.

The horror classic, which marks its 45th anniversary this year, featured Susan Roces as the eponymous character and became essential to the legacy of horror as a genre in Philippine cinema.

It has since sprung different Barbaras for generations of viewers, played by Lorna Tolentino in “Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara” in 1995 and Kris Aquino in the ABS-CBN teleserye of the same title in 2008.

Like its previous versions, “Barbara Reimagined” tackles the fraught relationship of two sisters, packed with a bunch of jumpscares throughout the film.

The iWant movie, however, offers a dark and disturbing twist that will catch viewers completely off guard.

Nathalie also adds sultriness to the character, and is supported by JC de Vera as the dashing James, Mariel de Leon as Barbara’s delusional sister Karen, and child actress Xia Vigor as Karen and James’ daughter Isabelle.

In “Barbara Reimagined,” Barbara comes home for the funeral of Karen, who died after committing suicide. While grieving, she finds comfort in Karen’s husband James, who is also

her former lover.

With her unstable niece Isabelle needing a mother and the fire of her relationship with James just reignited, Barbara decides to stay and fill the hole her sister left.

However, strange events will happen upon her return and she uncovers the reason surrounding Karen’s mysterious death.

The iWant original movie premieres today as part of the lineup of the 2019 Cinema Originals Film Festival.

“Last year one of the series that we have featured was our AR magic books from a US publisher in direct animation. This was well-received throughout our market including Philippines. This year we have brought 14 titles including Christmas,” Ng said.

She said with last year’s turnout in Davao City, they are expecting to see more Davaoeños at the BBW book sale this year.

“Normally for the �irst year we dont know what to expect but so far because Davao CIty was our venue in the Philippines last year and we have our experience in MAnila and Cebu so roughly we know what the Filipinos like to read and in Davao we actually better prepared. But again every market is different and every region is different. This year we used our history from last year to create a better selection for this year,” Ng said.

he Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) brought cheers to some 600 children as UNESCO-cited Children’s Games held simultaneously in Jose Abad Santos (JAS), Davao Occidental and Banaybanay, Davao Oriental last November 8 and 9.

PSC Chairman William I. Ramirez said the national sports agency has been faithful and committed to President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s mandate to bring sports to the periphery.

“We have visited provinces which have never been visited by the PSC or any other sports program before,” the PSC chief said.

The road to JAS was

tedious. From Davao City, PSC Mindanao staff, led by program coordinator Cholo Elegino, had to cross three rivers to reach the municipality, which was roughly 229 kilometers and a seven-hour trip from Davao City.

But seeing the faces of 300 kids eagerly anticipating a day of fun and games at Holy Cross of Caburan was indeed worth the challenging trip.

About 250 children in the municipality played tug of peace, sack race, piko, dodgeball, kadang-kadang and dampa.

nization.

The 527 members of the event workforce will be deployed in various venues in Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, Subic, and New Clark City Sports Hub in Capas, Tarlac.

At least 10,000 athletes and of�icials from 11 participating SEA Games members will compete for in a record 529 events from 56 sports.

The opening ceremony of the SEA Games is set Nov. 30 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan while the closing rite will happen at the newly-built 20,000-seater New Clark City Athletics Stadium.

Phisgoc Chief Operating Of�icer Ramon Suzara said the Games’ competition, however, will begin much earlier with polo scheduled to start on Nov. 22 while men’s football, netball, and �loorball will kick off November 25.

Bugged by a double-digit de�icit down the stretch, clutch brothers Juanito Ybañez and Dioniel Lavente stood up for the MATS College of Technology (MATSCT) Navigators pouring their all to stave off a potential defeat last Sunday, November 10, against the unbeaten University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats in the resumption of the Collegiate Sponsors League (CSL) Escandor Cup held at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The Navigators scored a giant-sized upset over the Wildcats in a tightrope 115-111 game decided in overtime.

The Navigator's second victory after a two-game skid, however, didn't came

easily.

UM was a period away from their fourth-straight victory celebration. The guys in white and maroon had a double-digit lead upon entering the �inal frame. Basically, it was only a matter of slowing the phase and burning the clock while keeping their defense intact. Although UM has it, yielding wasn't an option for the Navigators.

MATSCT needed to win their remaining games to reach the top four in bracket A and enter the quarter�inals. They are currently at the sixth spot and have two remaining games before the elimination formally closes.
