ayor Sara Duterte apologized over the cutting of trees at the rehabilitation-bound Clifford Park, owning up command responsibility while committing to planting new trees at the park.

The Mayor's statement ended days of mounting public uproar on social media over the cutting of decade-old trees at the park along Roxas Avenue which is a popular convergence area for Dabawenyos.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mayor Duterte said she gave the approval for Clifford Park's rehabilitation saying "the City Government of Davao intended to accommodate more people and enhance its tourism and recreational values."

"I approved the proposed design and assumed that the project will build around the trees. However, it has come to my attention that several trees were felled down as park re-

habilitation progressed," Mayor Duterte said.

She went on to admit that it was her mistake not to solicit an explanation on the park design.

"I quietly assumed that no trees will be taken down," she explained.

"I sincerely apologize for the oversight and commit to plant trees in the park, incorporating it to the new design."

n an effort to save the environment, President Rodrigo R. Duterte has broached the idea of prohibiting the use of plastics in the country, Malacañang said on Thursday.

The President raised the proposal during his “productive” discussions with Cabinet members at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday night.

“The President �loated the idea to ban the use of plastics, which according to him would require legislative action,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

Panelo noted that it was Vernice Victorio, president and chief executive of�icer of the Natural Resources Development Corporation (NRDC), who touched on the plastic pollution when she presented to the Pres-

ident and the Cabinet the Priority Programs for Environment and Climate Change Resiliency.

NRDC is a state corporation attached to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Philippines uses a “shocking” amount of single-use plastic, including nearly 60 billion sachets a year, according to a March 2019 article published

The activity is in line with the Drug-Free Workplace Campaign 2019 of the government.

City of Mati Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat said that the conduct of drug testing in government places is part of the City of Mati’s commitment in reducing drug supply and criminality in the community.

The City Anti-Drug Abuse Council(CADAC) said the activity is in implementation of the Dangerous Drug Board Resolution No. 13 or the ‘’Establishment and Institutionalization of Drug Free Workplace”.

There were 150 functionaries of barangay Matiao and 25 resident-surrenderers who underwent drug testing Wednesday morning.

Individuals who will test positive will undergo Drugs Community Based Rehabilitation and Aftercare Program (CBRAP).

PRRD expects Robredo to see 'realities’ of anti-drug drive

resident Rodrigo Duterte has welcomed Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo’s acceptance of his formal offer for her to co-chair the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), Malacañang said on Thursday.

During the 43rd Cabinet meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday night, Duterte was optimistic that Robredo would realize the importance of his administration’s intensi�ied crackdown on illegal drugs, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

“The President mentioned it was good that Vice President Ma. Leonor Robredo accepted his formal offer to co-chair the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs,” the Palace of�icial said.

On Wednesday, Robredo announced her decision to accept her designation as co-chairperson of ICAD, an anti-drug body that is mandated to ensure the implementation of all policies, laws, and issuances on the government’s anti-narcotics drive.

“With the Vice President at the helm of the anti-narcotics campaign, President Duterte expects that the former would see the realities on the ground, particularly with respect to the government's position against extrajudicial or state-sponsored killings,” Panelo said Robredo's acceptance came even after her spokesperson, lawyer Barry Gutierrez, claimed that her appointment was "unclear" and "non-existent".

Robredo will lead ICAD, along with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Aaron Aquino, until June 30, 2022, according to the memorandum signed by Duterte on October 31.

The memorandum also directed the PDEA, the Philippine National Police, the Dangerous Drugs Board, and all other law enforcement agencies to extend their "full assistance and cooperation" to Robredo to ensure the success of the administration's �ight against illegal drugs.

Lisette Cipriano, Senior Digital Technology Specialist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), underscored this in a brie�ing with journalists Wednesday at the sidelines of the 3rd Asia Finance Forum being hosted by the Manila-based lender from November 4-7, 2019.

PH economy grows 6.2% in Q3 of 2019

he Philippine economy expanded by 6.2 percent in July to September period this year after two quarters of deceleration, making it still one of Asia’s fastest, the government reported Thursday.

In a press brie�ing, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said the Philippines likely ranked second behind Vietnam’s 7.3 percent but higher than China’s 6 percent during the period.

“The stronger growth in

public spending in the third quarter contributed signi�icantly to our third-quarter performance,” Pernia said.

“Government is committed to speeding up the implementation of its programs and projects that were affected by the budget im-

The third-quarter �igure brought gross domestic product (GDP) of the last nine months to 5.8 percent, slightly below the lower-end of the government’s 6 to 7 percent target for the year.

are con�idently taking on,” Pernia added.

Among the major economic sectors, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that services posted the fastest growth with 6.9 percent in the third quarter.

Industry followed, which grew by 5.6 percent, while agriculture, hunting, forestry and �ishing all registered a growth of 3.1 percent.

"Pag hindi bumaba, may nagmamaniobra sa (Once it does not decline, someone manipulates in the) distribution," he added.

Dimagiba added that from the mill gate price, there is already price "unbonding" of sugar wherein only the mill gate price is moving while all taxes and everything that goes to processing, re�ining, distribution, and transportation are almost �ixed cost and “passed on down the line”.

Meanwhile, Coscolluela believes that with the proposed trade liberalization,

the sugar industry would be in “crisis” as it is not yet ready to face open competition in an uneven playing �ield.

He cited the Philippine sugar competing against Thailand’s sugar, which is heavily subsidized by its government.

"There is no way that the Philippine sugar industry can compete against subsidies," he said.

Coscolluela thus underscored the need for the sugar industry to improve its productivity, which is the major challenge it is facing today.

"The industry is facing (an) increasing cost of production, competition from subsidized sugar, sugar substitutes like HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup), and from smuggled sugar.

These are the realities that the industry is facing and it's going to be a big challenge to be able to survive under these circumstances,” he said.

"We're beginning to see the effects of import liberalization and we expect domestic prices to go down.

The sad thing is mill gate prices for sugar producers are beginning to go down but retail prices of sugar are remaining at unusual high levels," he added.

Coscolluela said the “big challenge” for the government now is to �ind a balance on how to protect the interest of the different sectors so it could have a consistent policy environment that encourages agriculture, protects the consumer, and most importantly protects the farmer or laborer.

During the roundtable forum on Wednesday in Quezon City, former Sugar Regulatory Administration chief Rafael Coscolluela said that if the mill gate price of raw sugar is PHP1,500 per 50-kilogram bag, this should be sold less than PHP50 a kilo in retail, or PHP46 to PHP47.

"If mill gate prices, for example, is PHP1,500, add about PHP800 to cover the distribution cost --that means from mill gate, pass on to trader, then to broker, repacker, and �inally to the retailer. Add PHP1,500 plus PHP800, that's PHP2,300, divided by 50, the price comes out to less than PHP50 per kilo retailed," he said.

“In today’s launching, �ish from General Santos City, canned sardines from Zamboanga, vegetables from Bukidnon, pork from nearby towns and rice direct from the farmers will be sold at farm gate prices,” Piñol said, adding that the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the police would be engaged to ensure the smooth operation of the outlets.

After Makilala, other outlets will be opened in Tulunan and Magpet in North Cotabato and Bansalan, Matanao, Magsaysay, and parts of Digos City recently hit by the quakes.

The other side of Leni’s appointment

Vice President Leni Robredo has accepted the appointment of President Rodrigo Duterte to co-chair the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign.

While many from both sides of the political fence believe the designation is a sarcastic ploy, this can also be viewed rather objectively as a welcome sign towards political cooperation. The designation had some of the Vice President’s allies in the opposition like jailed Senator Leila De Lima and former Senator Antonio Trillanes saying it is a trap. Even Leni �irst frowned on the idea thinking that the President’s failure should not be her responsibility. In the �irst place, Leni said it was not her who promised to eradicate illegal drugs in six months.

The designation was also criticized by some for the mere fact that the post is co-chairmanship. Which means that essentially, the co-chair still receives orders from the superior. In this case, the chief executive who is the appointing authority.

But all that must be swept under the rug now. Leni has accepted the ‘challenge’ of being the country’s anti-drugs enforcer in co-chair capacity with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). In fact, she immediately declared: “are you ready for me?”

Putting things into perspective. The gesture by President Duterte must not be construed as sheer sarcasm and a silly trap. Everyone instead should appreciate the gesture which could mean offering a hand in cooperation and unity. By appointing Leni, President Duterte is in effect reaching out to his so-called spare tire to be one with him in the �ight against illegal drugs--an enemy he must have ‘underestimated’ in 2016. With Leni on board, a different strategy is in the of�ing. Nothing can be said as of it yet but de�initely, given that she is against the bloody war earlier waged by government in drug operations, she could offer a different gameplan. And that is, to be fair with her, worth watching for.

The thing is, Leni should also not take it against her that she was put in the position as if it was designed for her to be destined to fail. If at all, she should take that as a challenge.

Meantime, it is not fair for the supporters of the President to wish Leni to fail. Instead, all support must be given her. For if Leni fails, the government fails. If she fails, her appointing authority--President Duterte-also fails.

Perhaps there is something good that will come out of this that only the wisdom of President Duterte could fathom out.

THE PERILS OF FILIPINO FISHERMEN IN TAIWAN Kaohsiung, Taiwan – Migrant �ishermen in Taiwan must be able to live onshore instead of sleeping on the boats on which they work.

This is the call of migrant rights and church groups after three Filipino and three Indonesian �ishermen were killed when the bridge in Nanfang’ao Port collapsed on October 1, crushing their boats. 10 people were also injured in the disaster. The incident also left 18 migrant �ishermen, 14 Filipino and 4 Indonesian homeless.

“I hope that this incident will serve as a lesson for all of us, especially the Taiwan authorities and employers, that �ishermen should not live on boats, because boats are a place of work and not a home,” said Fr. Joy Tajonera, a Filipino priest connected with Ugnayan Migrant and Immigrant Ministry in Taiwan.

An oil tank truck was on the bridge when it collapsed and ignited after falling into the waterway, spewing

smoke into the air. As it fell, the bridge crushed three �ishing boats beneath it, injuring and trapping a number of migrant �ishermen on board the vessels.

Out of the 14 Filipino migrant �ishermen, Ugnayan is now assisting �ive Filipino �ishermen who wanted to transfer to a factory job. Two are returning to the Philippines to live while the other seven are transferring to new �ishing employers.

The �ive �ishermen were present during the recent World Conference of the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan where they shared their experiences to the delegates.

“One could see the hope and the resilience of the Filipino people on how to be responsible to live for others and not only for oneself as the pain brought by separation is a sign of their love, strength, and faith for the good of their family and the country,” Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio

Cardinal Tagle said during the conference.Taiwan’s estimated $2 billion �ishing industry operates over a third of the world’s longline tuna vessels.

As of the end of April, the Ministry of Labor (MOL) reported that there were 12,406 migrant �ishermen in Taiwan, adding that 12,383 work on �ishing boats, while 23 are employed at �ish farms. However, NGOs estimates higher number of migrant �ishermen, mostly undocumented.

Labor issues have long troubled the global �ishing industry, and Taiwan is no exception.

Migrant �ishermen are a particularly vulnerable population.

The 2018 US State Department’s Country Report on Human Rights Practices for Taiwan �lagged the practices of recruitment and brokerage agencies, which facilitate the hiring of �ishermen and other migrant workers, as leaving workers “vulnerable to debt bondage.” This occurs when recruitment

agency hires a foreign �ishing worker and withholds his passport or deducts heavy service fees from the his pay.

The Report also noted mistreatment and poor working conditions for foreign �ishermen remained common. Foreign �ishermen recruited offshore were not entitled to the same labor rights, wages, insurance, and pensions as those recruited locally.

Many �ishermen frequently report non-payment, long work hours, and verbal and physical abuse, often at the hands of Taiwanese captains.

Regulations only require a minimum monthly wage of $450.00 for foreign �ishermen, signi�icantly below Taiwan’s minimum wage.

Moreover, NGOs reported that foreign �ishing crews on Taiwan-�lagged long-haul vessels generally received wages below $450 per month because of dubious deductions for administrative fees and deposits.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) earlier urged Filipino �ishermen to acquire the proper documents, certi�ication, and safety training requirements before working in Taiwan.

The agency said applicants should not use backdoor exits, and instead, engage the services of licensed recruitment agencies with job orders approved by the POEA. Illegal recruiters transport �ishermen who choose to avoid the legal process to remote facilities outside of Taiwan that have been dubbed as ‘�loating barracks’ and have been known to have substandard living conditions. *** Atty. THE SAMALS OF DAVAO GULF If we take a hard look at the administrative territories of Davao region, two of the places are named after indigenous tribes, namely Talaingod, a town north of Davao City, and Samal, an island-city.

Both are part of the province of Davao del Norte.

The islanders of Samal (also known as Sama), unlike the other Islamized tribe with the same name that inhabits some parts of the Sulu archipelago, caught the attention of early foreign visitors who were captivated by their features.

Arnold Henry Savage Landor (1865-1924), an English anthropologist who visited Davao in the early part of the 20th century, had exciting comments about the tribe.

In his book, The Gems of the East Sixteen Thousand Miles of Research Travel Among Wild and Tame Tribes of Enchanting Islands (1904), they reminded him of the foreigners he met in his southeast Asian travels.

Landor described the Samals as “very handsome people, of Indonesian origin— not of Malay extraction like

the other Samals; and their features are so regular that they might be taken for Spaniards or southern Italians.”

This concurs with the observations of French anthropologist and naturalist Joseph Montano who suggested the Samals, along with the Bagobos, Giangas, Atis, Tagakaolos, Manobos, and Mandayas “are pure Indonesians whose origin cannot be explained otherwise than by supposing them to be the indigenes of all the islands included under the term Indonesia.”

Dr. Montano, who did scienti�ic survey in Davao region, explained that the Samals are a mix of Polynesian, Malay-Bisaya, and Negrito strain and trace their Bisaya element to “the increase of transverse diameter of the cranium” and the Negrito element to “the waviness of the hair, the height and prominence of the forehead, and the darker color of the skin,” adding their anatomical features have something to do with their bigger stature, muscular physiognomy, and distinctive occipital lobe that

is dissimilar to that of the Malays.

On his visit to the island, Landor observed up close the physiognomic features of the Samals, describing them as having curly hair, with fairsized moustache, very large eyes, long eyelashes, and drooping eyelids at the outer bends which he compared to Caucasians. He wrote: “Their lips are thin and �irm, and their ears have detached lobes quite unlike most other tribes I had examined. The forehead was wide, but the back portion of the cranium lacked width.

The skull was also abnormally �lattened above. The cheekbones were very high, and the lower jawbone much enlarged but tapering into a small chin. The nose was well formed, the nostrils only slightly expanded, and the bridge of the nose quite raised. The upper lip projected over the lower.

“The skin of the Samals is of a darkish brown color.

They �ile their teeth horizontally, leaving a concave outward surface, and they blacken them. These people

seem to have an extraordinary development of chestsome men having breasts almost like women-arms, and legs. Their feet were coarse, with high instep and abnormally developed toes, and their hands suggested a brutal nature, the square topped �ingers stumpy, with heavy knuckles and short, pointed thumbs, making their hands, indeed, most repulsive to look at. But the wrists and ankles were comparatively small and well formed. Their pulse-beat was extraordinarily feeble and slow.”

In his notes, Landor also described the Samals as builders of good boats made of nipa leaves, bamboo strips, and sturdy hulls, complete with outriggers, square sail, and split-bamboo deck that serves as cooking platform.

As a separate tribe, the Sama (or Samals) were animists who believed in anito (spirits), balyan (tribal priest), and panawatawag (prayers). They also believed in bird sounds, the import of tides in relation to planting crops, and other traditions with similarities in other in-

digenous peoples.

Music is an important facet of Sama culture. They have songs of thanksgiving, the estiharo, and the pangayo, performed when the man askes for the hand of a woman in wedding. For narratives and sagas rendered in songs, they have the tuganuwan. Their musical arsenal includes instruments such as the agong and gumba for dancing; and koglong, kubing, patawali and kulintang for special occasions.

Samal dances are also allied with sounds. When the tribal priest dances, his accessories include kongkong, a small gong on the belt; kuyab, a hand fan; lampayon, a red kerchief; pawtina, a breast plate; and balyog, a necklace made of tiny seeds. He hops the sagumbata (dance of happiness), tagonggo (accompanied by a set of agong and a gimba), and lindog sayawan (warding off bad spirits).

When doing the pagbana ritual outside the house, he uses the bagaybay, a chicken with black or white feathers, and other added features strictly not aboriginal in character.

WILL THERE BE CHRISTMAS FOR THE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS?

ant to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you.” ― Steve Maraboli, author of Unapologetically You: Re�lections on Life and the Human Experience Three is considered a magical number. Christians, for instance, believe in the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). Because number 3 is associated with religion and magic, things were said to come in threes. So are bad things.

The popular saying came to mind when a powerful earthquake with magnitude 6.3 hit some portions of Mindanao on October 16. (According to the United States Geological Survey, magnitude is “a number that characterizes the relative size of an earthquake.” It is based on measurement of the maximum motion recorded by seismograph.)

There was nothing unusual that Wednesday night. After dinner, I went immediately to my sala and �inished the article I wrote that afternoon.

Thirty minutes later, I decided to lay down in my bed. It was 7:30 in the evening already – too early to go to sleep.

I decided to open my Facebook account. Some friends were online so I chatted with some of them. At 7:37 pm, I was jolted by the strong quake.

The house was literally swaying. I rushed to the door but it was locked. I tried to open the door when suddenly the room was completely dark.

There was a total

blackout. It was good that I was using my iPad; I used the light to see my way out. Now, at the tierra �irma, I was all alone.

But there was chaos all over.

From nearby house, where my parents and my sister’s family live, there was a lot of shouting. My mother, who was lying in her bed, had a hard time getting out from her bed.

So, was my father.

After a series of aftershocks continued to jolt southern Mindanao, a stronger earthquake with magnitude 6.6 smashed North Cotabato and Davao del Sur on October 29. Just when everyone thought it was already over, another earthquake with magnitude 6.5 struck the same areas.

Thousands of families and individuals were displaced. In fact, right after the October 16 tremor, there were some families who didn’t sleep inside their homes and instead built tents outside their homes. When the two other tremors came successively, there was no

other choice but to live outside their homes.

“I don’t feel inside my house anymore,” said Meryl Louise Lapinig, a mother of two whose youngest is only �ive months old. “My husband is a seaman and he is not with us right now. My eldest is already traumatized.”

To some children, living in a tent seems to be fun as they thought they were just camping out. “Sleeping inside a tent with your family for three weeks is easy,” said Jhunie Amaba, who lives in barangay Rizal in Bansalan, Davao del Sur. “You have this fear that your tent will be destroyed by a strong wind or if it rains and a strong wind blows the water might come inside the tent. I have also to think of my one-yearold baby.”

The family built their tent outside of their house since some portions were badly damaged by the series of earthquakes. “I could not think of camping out in the evacuation area where there are so

many families packed together. As there is no enough water and a place where they could do their necessities, diseases would be a big problem.”

It is during this time of calamities and natural disasters that brings out the best of a person. As gospel singer Kevin Health puts it: “Whenever there is a human need, there is an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference.”

Veteran Davao journalist Sera�in Ledesma, Jr. considers this as Christmas in itself. “The unprecedented outpouring from unknown donors to unknown recipients who are victims of the earthquakes exemplify Christmas. It is a season of giving and receiving and there is no better time to celebrate Christmas than now.

In his social account, he wrote: “Faceless individuals and groups responded to the call for assistance,” Ledesma continued. “It’s overwhelming. There were awe-inspiring acts of charity.

Inmates in Surigao volunteered to cut their meager food supply by half so they can dispatch the half to quake victims. Movie actress Angel Locsin came to Davao City surreptitiously, did her own shopping for varied relief items, the same way she did during the Marawi siege.”

But there were those

who were against the idea of people sharing their activities of extending help to those affected by the earthquakes on social media. “I feel there is nothing wrong about it,” says Jason John Joyce, the mayor of Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur. “The posts showing the generous nature of Filipinos certainly inspires and in�luences more people to give and to share.”

Kindness, in whatever form, deserves appreciation.

“Kindness, whether done in private or shown publicly (social media, etc.), brings hope and happiness,” Joyce points out. “It connects and unites people. So go ahead, be kind, inspire more people and make this world a more loving place.”

At this time of the year, people should have been in good moods already as Christmas is fast approaching. But if you go to those affected areas, you don’t see people smiling and looking forward for Christmas celebration. You don’t ever hear Christmas carols being played.

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts,” wrote Englisn writer and actress Joan Winmill Brown. “No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given-- when Christmas

David’s mom Virginia opened Kuzina Virginia last September 8 this year, which serves authentic Mandaya and Filipino dishes.

“We know Mati is popular for empanada but it is not a meal.

That is why we conceptualized this restaurant. Most of the travelers will ask for local food and I have to make this to bring people, have a taste and experience the Mandaya food,” David said in an interview.

The Mandayas in Davao Oriental have a rich tribal heritage that is very evident in their colorful costumes, bead works, and food.

Eating Mandaya dishes is as simple as having coconut and camote at home. These are the ingredients

used every time they prepare their dish to ensure it does not lose the original taste.

The cold tuba (coconut wine) shake and the mouthwatering pudding de Mati showcase the flourishing coconut industry of Davao Oriental. The tuba shake will not give you hangover only delight!

Another Mandaya way of cooking is wrapping the banami (shrimp) in banana leaves grilled in a pan. The banana leaf adds flavor and makes the banami juicier inside.

David said using banami aims to promote also the shrimp industry of the province. According to her, there are around 123 shrimp growers in Mati.

“Most of the food comes from the products we have here in Mati Davao Oriental,” she added.

The Mandaya tribe is popular for their L’lulot dish. These are usually composed of meat (pork, chicken or shrimp) and rice that is cooked in a bamboo along with coconut milk with a mix of ginger, onions and garlic.

At Kuzina Virginia, Lut is being served as a labor of love.

“But you have to order it ahead of time. We make it like we have to cook it within three to four hours.

We have to buy the Lut every other day because the bamboo can be used only within 24 hours and beyond that it does not taste nice kasi wala na yung moisture. The bamboo stalk that is being used is different. It must not be too young and too old,” David said.

They don’t see much good happening to them and not surprisingly, not much of anything ever happens in their lives. It never occurs to them that what they don’t see is exactly what they don’t get.

A timely thought from an unknown author should remind everyone as the world commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ: “Count your blessings instead of your crosses. Count your gains instead of your losses.

Count your joys instead of your woes. Count your friends instead of your foes. Count your smiles instead of your tears.

Count your courage instead of your fears. Count your full years instead of your lean. Count your kind deeds instead of your mean. Count your health instead of your wealth.”

American author Norman Vincent Peale, who popularized the concept of positive thinking, said it well: “I truly believe that if we keep telling the Christmas story, singing the Christmas songs, and living the Christmas spirit, we can bring joy and happiness and peace to this world.”

The suit accuses Facebook of abusing its power over user data, although most of the documents �iled in the case have been sealed by a judge at Face-

Bojan Bogdanovic added 20 points, six rebounds and �ive assists, and Joe Ingles scored a season-best 16 points off the bench as Utah halted a two-game slide.

Mike Conley scored 15 points and Rudy Gobert contributed 14 points, 16 rebounds and three steals.

Joel Embiid registered 27 points and 16 rebounds but was just 5 of 16 from the �ield as Philadelphia lost its second straight game. Josh Richardson scored 24 points, Tobias Harris added 16 and Raul Neto had 11 for the 76ers.

Simmons had just two points in 10 minutes before departing with 5:20 left in the second quarter with right shoulder soreness. He appeared to initially hurt the shoulder early in the �irst quarter when he banged it against the body of Utah defender Royce O'Neale.

According to reports, Simmons sustained a sprained AC joint and will be re-evaluated Thursday.

Bogdanovic had 15 �irst-half points as the Jazz held a 58-56 halftime edge. Embiid had 18 points and eight rebounds for Philadelphia.

Mitchell scored straight �ive points and Conley followed with a 3-pointer as the Jazz opened up a 74-63 lead with 5:57 left in the third quarter.

The lead reached 13 two minutes later on two free throws by O'Neale and Utah settled for an 84-73 advantage entering the �inal stanza.
