t's of�icial, Davao City is hosting the MICE (meetings incentive conventions and events) Conference 2020. The Tourism Promotions Board has recently announced Davao City as MICECON 2020's host destination.

And now for the groundworks.

The Davao MICE Execom will now get things going by �irst empowering the frontliners to make the city's hosting successful.

City Tourism Operations Of�ice (CTOO) head Generose Tecson told Edge Davao that one of the strategies they are looking at is for the frontliners of

the industry such as event organizers, front desks and tour guides to undergo training in preparation for next year's event and the succeeding ones.

"We will be meeting to get everyone on the same page as well as strategize and set timelines. Included sa strategies natin ang trainings for frontliners to get them ready for 2020

and beyond. Everyone has an important role not just the front liners," she said.

Tecson said the training aims to ensure that visitors are well satis�ied and happy with the services that the city will offer so that they can spread out the word to others as well keep on coming back to Davao.

"We are targeting to conduct the meeting next month with the Davao Execom muna," she said.

Ken Kapulong, Davao MICE Execom co-chair and general manager of Seda Abreeza, shared tentative timelines of the MICECON planning.

In the 4th quarter of this year, the Execom will work on theme and branding, establish �inancial framework, and secure venue bookings.

On the �irst quarter of 2020, they will start developing program/content conceptualization of socials and themed events, conceptualization and validation of tours, and publicity and promotions.

The second quarter of 2020 will be concentrated on logistical and technical requirements planning, collection of sponsorships, and start of regis-

ture and biodiversity.

"This is a satellite laboratory to the one we have now in UP-Diliman.

This is the �irst outside of National Capital Region (NCR) to serve our researchers in Mindanao," said Anthony Sales, Department of Science and Technology 11 (DOST 11) regional director in an interview.

Sales said the center will do two things--research and development, and services. He said for research and development, they will focus on agriculture applications for agriculture biodiversity conservation.

The center will help address the problems in agriculture particularly in diseases such as fusarium

disease in banana and by using DNA technology or molecular methods they can diagnose diseases from the soil, plants and even in water.

"Malalaman natin kung saan galing yung diseases at kung saan maraming organisms that causes such diseases using DNA technology," he said.

Currently, there are two laboratories in Mindanao--Tadeco in Carmen, Davao del Norte and Unifrutti Philippines in Bukidnon--that aim to help farmers improve the quality of seedlings and resist Panama disease.

"We now have two laboratories in Tadeco and Unifrutti and soon the PGC will provide the same

services," Sales said.

The building, which costs around P15 million will house other laboratories including the PGC and another P15 million allocation for the equipment.

"The DNA PCR machine and all other peripheral equipment and instruments would cost around P10 million to P15 million. The building is almost complete, the equipment are coming already and hope we will be able to complete all the equipment for the PGC so that we can operate the laboratory services. We need to see that all the equipment are there and people who will manned the laboratory are all properly trained," Sales said.

fter almost two weeks of pushing its massive Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) vaccination campaign, the City Health Of�ice (CHO) disclosed that it has already covered 95.6 percent of its 100 percent rate target.

The �irst round "Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio" campaign was launched last October 14 and only 4.4 percent of the area of Davao City has not availed of the free immunization.

The �irst round of the synchronized vaccination which aims to eradicate the polio virus in Davao City will end on October 27.

CHO Chief of the Technical Division Dr. Julinda Acosta said children who have not availed of the free vaccine in the �irst round may still have it during the second and third rounds

slated November 25 to December 7, and January 6 to 18, 2020, respectively.

Acosta also appealed to the parents to cooperate with the campaign enabling the City Government of Davao to achieve its goal.

"Hesistant parin yung iba dahil doon sa dengvaxia and yung iba naman ayaw talaga mag cooperate kasi may sarili na daw silang physician," Acosta, during the I-Speak Media Forum held on Thursday, October 24 at the City Hall of Davao, said.

Mostly of the parents who refused the free vaccination, said Acosta, came from high end subdivisions.

Thus, they directed the city health workers and barangay workers along other volunteers to focus on the less fortunate areas.

oint military and police forces killed seven alleged members of the Islamic State-inspired Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in a clash in Midsayap, North Cotabato, Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Glenn Cabrera, commander of the Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion, said the encounter occurred around 5:00 a.m. in Sitio Narra, Barangay Tumbras, Midsayap, after locals tipped authorities on the presence of armed men in their community.

“Our troopers, in coordination with the local police, immediately

responded to the tip and chanced upon the group at their nipa hideout who put up a �ight,” Cabrera said, referring to the 40-minute clash that ensued.

When the group offered no more resistance, government forces, this time backed by helicopter gunships, scoured Sitio Narra and found the remains of the slain suspects.

Initial military reports identi�ied two of the dead as Mama Macalimbol, long wanted for multiple frustrated murder charges, and a certain Bedis Macarimbang.

PRRD ‘feeling much better’ now: Palace P resident Rodrigo Duterte is now feeling “much better,” after experiencing pain in his lower back, Malacañang said on Thursday.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo gave the assurance, as he maintained that the health condition of the 74-yearold President should not be a cause for concern.

“The Palace assures our countrymen that they need not worry about the President’s health,” Panelo said.

he Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has denied allegations that President Rodrigo Duterte, who attended Emperor Naruhito's enthronement ceremony on Tuesday, shortened his Tokyo trip after he was "unceremoniously ignored" in Japan.

"I veri�ied with Tokyo (Philippine Embassy), the allegations are false," DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez told reporters on Thursday.

The statement came after a certain Ding Velasco alleged that the Chief Executive was faking his pelvic pain as a "ruse" to leave "for having been unceremoniously ignored in Japan."

Duterte, who witnessed on Tuesday the formal ascension of Emperor Naruhito to the Chrysanthemum Throne, cut short

his Japan visit due to “unbearable” back pain caused by a recent motorcycle accident.

After arriving in Manila on Tuesday night, he proceeded to the wake of former Senate president Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel. The president was supposed to extend his trip until Thursday but decided to �ly back home to see his neurologist on Wednesday.

In his Facebook post that had gone viral since Wednesday, Velasco questioned the move, asking why the president had to bypass Malacañang to rest and attend Pimentel's wake.

According to Malacañang, "notwithstanding his trip to Japan being cut short due to a searing pain in the spinal pelvic area of his body, the President was

three-day stay in Tokyo for the celebration of Emperor Naruhito’s accession to the throne.

Panelo noted that Duterte’s medical results showed that he is having “muscle spasms,” which could be aggravated by his motorcycle accident several years ago, and from another minor mishap this month.

Panelo said that there was no need for the President to undergo any surgical procedure, as he was only prescribed medicines to relieve the pain caused by the cramp.

“His doctor ruled out any surgical procedure for the President,” he said.

Panelo reassured that the Chief Executive is in

good health, and was only advised by his neurologist to take a rest and limit his activities.

“The President underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and medical evaluation yesterday (Wednesday). He was diagnosed to be having muscle spasms causing what he described to be an unbearable pain at the pelvic and spinal area of his body,” he said.

“The Chief Executive has been advised by his doctor to rest for a couple of days and limit his physical activity, particularly avoiding standing or walking for a long duration,” he added.

ASF in processed meat products alarms traders

group of meat processors said Thursday it was "seriously checking" reports that 3 pork products pork products allegedly tested positive for African swine fever.

The Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc (PAMPI) only received information from reporters and hog raisers, not authorities, that 3 brands of hotdog, longganisa and tocino were positive for the deadly virus, said its spokesperson Rex Agarrado.

"We are seriously checking kung ano ito (what this is)," he said.

"Unfair nga po, very unfair 'pag walang brand na ime-mention kasi lahat tatamaan. Sa totoo lang hindi kami maka-respond.

Wala kaming hawak [na impormasyon]," he added.

(It's very unfair if no brand is being mentioned because everyone will be hit. In truth, we can't respond because we don't have any information.)

He appealed to the Bureau Of Animal Industry, "Let's respect each other,

kami po ang bigyan ninyo [ng impormasyon], kami po ang apektado."

The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) �irst monitored the report on Facebook and the agriculture department con�irmed it to them, said the group's chairman Rosendo So. PAMPI imports "90 to 95 percent" of the meat used in its products from ASF-free countries that meet international standards, said Agarrado.

The Bureau of Customs, however, only inspects pork shipments brie�ly, claimed So. "Iyong checking ng kargamento, hindi ginagawa sa pier. Nagbubukas lang sila, sarado aga tas inilalabas na. Dapat sa �irst border pa lang, chini-check na ito," he said.

PCC probes players involved in rice distribution amid high prices

T

he Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) is looking deeper into “middle phase transactions” in rice trade as retail prices remain high despite the falling farm gate prices amid surging importation following the passage of the rice tarif�ication law.

PCC Commissioner Johannes Bernabe is referring to the involvement of middlemen, traders, millers and wholesalers in the distribution and facilitation of distribution of rice to the end users.

“If there is concentration, if there are players who are in a dominant position in certain markets for this middle phase transactions, then is it worsening the gap between farm gate prices and retail prices. If some of them are in a dominant or, worse, if they are engaged in cartelistic behavior, then they will exacerbate between farm gate prices and retail prices,” he told reporters Wednesday on the sidelines of a competition policy forum.

Bernabe noted there are certain relevant geographic markets which seem to indicate that it is “worth pursuing” whether there are some anti-competitive behaviors going on.

“Primarily, the ones who have leverage in this value chain appear to be the middlemen. At this point, we don’t want to say anyone is liable, that there are any guilty parties. It’s just that in the PCC, it behooves us to try and narrow down who it is we should be prioritizing in terms of examining behavior or conduct,” he said.

He believes that farmers are not in a position to abuse what they have because they are not organized, and do not have any leverage in imposing prices at levels which are sustainable.

Bernabe said it is dif�icult to state if there is a cartel among all middlemen in

the whole country because of its archipelagic nature.

“You have to reduce it to: is it happening in Luzon? Is it happening in Visayas or Mindanao? Or is it happening within subregions? Is it happening, for instance, in Central Luzon?

In this particular case, we have tools at our disposal to request for information from entities who may not be liable, who may not be suspected of doing any wrongful acts. As part of our mandate in our law, we are empowered to request for information from them,” he said.

Bernabe added the PCC’s enforcement of�ice can conduct inquiries or investigation, surveillance and monitoring if these are necessary and appropriate.

“If we are able to establish that there is anticompetitive behavior going on, whether it is in the form of cartel or abuse of dominant position, then the Philippine Competition Act kicks in. In that case, we will have to enforce the full force of the law and sanction those conduct, those acts,” he said.

PCC chair Arsenio Balisacan said that “if turns out there are cartels, administrative and criminal. If it’s criminal, cartel, that comes with administrative �ines or (it) could be imprisonment”.

The PCC and the Department of Agriculture (DA) have sealed a partnership to investigate the possible manipulation of rice prices in the country.

“That’s the basis of this undertaking, we want to understand where that is coming from. Is it because of too much imports or production is too much relative to the demand of the millers? Why has farm gate price fallen sharply? (It is) not as easy as it seems, you have to understand the dynamics. DA has been accumulating info(rmation) about that,” Balisacan said.

PLDT invests P7 billion for new trans-Pacific cable to US, Japan

elecommunications giant PLDT Inc. is investing $136.7 million or P7 billion in a trans-Paci�ic cable system linking to the US and Japan.

In a statement on Wednesday, PLDT said the telco has �inalized the technical and management agreements with a consortium of international providers that will "further increase its international capacity and resiliency of its direct undersea �iber links to the United States and Japan through the trans-Paci�ic cable system called 'JUPITER'."

The consortium includes global companies such as Amazon, Facebook, SoftBank, PCCW Global and NTT Communications.

The new undersea cable project spans 14,000 kilometers and will connect to PLDT’s cable landing station in Daet, Cama-

rines Norte.

The project will provide additional capacity of more than 22 terabytes per second (Tbps) from the Philippines directly to and from Japan, and 17.6Tbps to the West Coast in the US, the telco said.

The new cable system is expected to be completed and operational by third quarter of next year.

It will use new technology that will allow PLDT and other consortium participants to quickly upgrade capacity in response to growing data traf�ic and customer data usage, it added.

“This investment is of strategic importance given that a signi�icant amount of content are downloaded by data users from servers abroad, particularly from the United States and Japan," PLDT chief revenue of�icer Alfred Panlilio said.

Organized by the PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority (PIA) and PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental-Special Economic Zone (PIEMO-SEZ), the summit intends to speed up the industrial development of Mindanao by establishing connections and dialogues between private and public sectors.

“I am sure there are a lot of companies here in Davao that also want industrialization. I am so impressed with MX3. Whoever thought of using the husk of mangosteen will give health bene�its and no entrepreneur has able to convert that into action.

Aside from the Japanese and Chinese Consulates in Davao City, the summit is also supported by the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philip-

pines (ECCP), Philippine News Agency (PNA), and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

The primary goal of the conference is to help local and foreign industries de�ine and design their integral role in the industrialization programs of the country.

“For private individuals and captain of the industry on the same page while they are competing with each other perhaps they may have forgotten that the role of each of them has a very important contribution in making an Industrial Philippines,” Quijano said.

The holding of the summit also correlates with the recent implementation of Administrative Order No. 18: Accelerating Rural Progress through Robust Development of Special Economic Zones in the countryside. The law seeks to hasten the development of human capital, infrastructure, and special economic zones in rural areas.

“This is the �irst Philippine Industrial Summit in Mindanao. We need people to answer the question: what is your imagery of modern industrial Phil-

ippines? This time I hope that we will be participated by captains of the industries those who really matter in de�ining the prosperity of our country,” Quijano added.

There will be dialogue among leaders of the industries, private sectors as well as various leaders from the government bureaus, policymakers, and media practitioners in creating a shared vision and recommendation about the Philippine industry future direction.

Participants may suggest and formulate possible courses of action to address issues and prepare for the globalization of the Philippine industries.

“This is an opportune time because our President is very friendly to all nations. There is a trade war going on between.

US and China. We cannot help but ask: what will we do to bene�it out of this trade war? The trade was is simply preventing some goods coming from one country to go from another country,” he said.

Why do people love to see family feuding? excited and interested. They ogle at every single post on social media by those involved and follow every word uttered. This by far has eclipsed all telenovelas combined in terms of interest. It’s a simple formula. If everything is all too peaceful within a celebrity’s life, it is considered boring. No publicities. No following. No business.

The other side of the Barreto feud that understandably got people relate is that celebrities, who are looked up to by ordinary folks , are humans afterall. Despite their status, they are capable of mishaps, shame and scandal. It would be hypocritical to vilify their disrespect for family and their dead, and gloat at their not so moral lives. The Barretos are also mortals. They also live normal lives.

This is not a rivalry where one needs to take sides and cheer from the sidelines. Those taking advantage of the feud for business interests-obviously for airtime dominance and social media footprints which all equate to money, must stop feasting on.

Instead of helping a beleaguered, dysfunctional family--especially at a time of grief--self interest and gossip mentality is getting the better of what should be a compassionate society.

This real-life drama involving the Barreto siblings is pure trash.

Why this pile of dirt is being accorded primetime attention by giant news organizations from broadcast to online is just unbelievable. At least in the normal sphere of society.

But there must be a reason.

The Barretos are not under the description of normal individuals in terms of their status in the community. They are celebrities. In fact, they are perhaps the Philippines’ version of the Kardashians of Hollywood.

First, the story of the Barreto sisters is not at all inspiring, nor is it �illed with values children can learn from. Neither do the characters make for good role models. Theirs is a story reeking with episodes that are unacceptable to the normal standards of morality. And yet, either sides are eliciting reactions from compassion and sympathy to negative, horrible comments--all that because they ate up hours and gigabytes of media space. Why? Because most Filipinos get excited to see celebrity families �ighting.

BEING MUSLIM IN THE MODERN WORLD Throughout the march of civilizations, we have seen how people changed the way they dress, travel, eat and others.

Changes that are brought about by modernity which had impacted humans the most usually last longer until a better innovation arrives that is completely impossible not to adopt. There are also shorter changes in human taste or culture and this is what fad is, an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities; a craze. A fad, unlike things that are adopted due to necessity are more �leeting and are less accepted universally.

For the most part, Muslims accept every form of progress that is generally bene�icial. In fact, Muslim scientists have made their signi�icant contributions to science and technology. During the Dark Ages which the Muslims call as the golden age of Islamic Science, Muslims preserved the world’s knowledge of the pillaging of the barbaric tribes in Europe after the fall of Rome.

And they did not only preserve it by having the works of Aristotle, Plato and others translated into Arabic in order to be translated back into the European languages during the

renaissance. Muslims made signi�icant contributions such as Al Khwarizmi, the father of Algebra; Ibnu Khaldun, the father of Sociology; Ibnul Haytham, the father of Optics and the modern camera; Al Jazari, the father of Robotics and Sharif Idris, the father of Geography.

Non-Muslim writers, historians and scientists would not call these �ive great men as fathers of their own respective �ields if they did not sense in their work any sort of pioneering and foundation laying during the times when most European homes do not even have toilets or running water.

Baghdad in Iraq is named as the capital of Medieval Muslim science and technology houses the Grand Library of Baghdad.

Founded in 754, the Grand Library of Baghdad, also known as Darul Hikmah or the House of Wisdom also serves as a public academy and intellectual center where scientists gather, debate or collaborate to further their scienti�ic endeavors.

Muslim Spain or Al Andalus is a Muslim territory that �lourished between 711-1492, in the Iberian Peninsula where Spain and Portugal are currently located. Muslims also made a lot of progress in this realm of Muslims that rivals the Caliphate in Bagh-

dad politically and scienti�ically.

But Al Andalus is more known for its architecture that remained the envy of Europeans until the present time.

PROGRESS VS DECADENCE Even during the modern times, Muslim countries are some of the most advanced countries in the world. But many people are quick to ask that if Muslims are scienti�ically aware and are educated enough, then why Muslims have to stick to medieval practices such as the conservative way of dressing for women and keeping the beard for men. If Muslims are really not anti-science, why do they have to keep praying the same way their prophet prayed 1500 years ago.

Why is there polygamy, capital punishment and others.

As Muslims, there is a simple answer to all these, there is a huge difference between progress and decadence. Progress is de�ined as moving forward in methodology, technique or even way of thinking and this is something that Muslims have no dif�iculty adopting. In fact, Islam encourages the Muslims, both male and female to educate themselves both in the religion and in the physical sciences. That is something that Muslims have no trouble adopting since the time of Prophet Muhammad up to the

time of the Ottoman Empire, the last Muslim superpower, when the Muslim cities and armies are considered as the most advanced in the world.

But the thing that Muslims fail to adopt is decadence which lead people to conclude that Muslims hate progress because their women do not dress like the ‘progressive’ modern women as they say. They say that Muslims hate progress as the men keep their beard on their faces and their genitals get circumcised in what anti-Muslims call as a form of genital mutilation. They say that Muslims hate progress Decadence is de�ined as moral or cultural decline as characterized by excessive indulgence in pleasure or luxury and that is something that the Muslims have been trying to protect themselves against. Muslims believe that this world was meant as a testing ground for Allah to know who would believe and be righteous in his or her own deeds. Islam has already laid down the moral and spiritual foundation that no Muslim who is in his or her sound mind and religion would want to deviate from.

Muslims stay away from vice as Muslims know that each and every kind of these is from the traps of Satan that is meant to

cause mischief in the land and pain and suffering to the doer of this vice. They say there are some bene�its in some of the vices such as alcohol and gambling but Allah said in the Quran, “They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and [yet, some] bene�it for people. But their sin is greater than their bene�it.” And they ask you what they should spend in charity. Say, “The excess [beyond needs].” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.” Quran 2:219.

Progress or modernity are two different things from decadence. When the Roman Empire built roads and other infrastructures, that was progress, but when they build coliseums to have gladatiors and wild animals �ight to the death in it in order for the masses to forget the ailments of the society - that is decadence.

The modern world have been neck deep in trying to entertain the people while forgetting its self-preserving priorities in protecting life, religion, property, honor and sanity of the public.

These �ive things have been called as the Maqasidush Shariah or the goals of the Shariah where Muslim ideologies, belief and choices revolve even in the modern world.

DECIPHERING LOVE “Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all.” – Alfred Lord Tennyson in In Memoriam *** There was this story, told

by Willi Hoffsuemmer, about an intelligent young king who ordered all the learned professors of his kingdom to gather and write down all the wisdom of the world.

The professors got right down to work and forty years later, they had a thousand books packed with wisdom. The king, who had already reached sixty years of age, told them: “I cannot possibly read a thousand books.

Reduce all that wisdom to basics.”

Another ten years elapsed and the professors were able to reduced the world’s wisdom to a hundred volumes. “That’s still too much,” the king said. “I’m already seventy years old. Condense all that wisdom into absolute essentials.”

So, the wise men, as they were now called, tried again and squeezed all the wisdom of the world into just one book. But by that time, the king was lying on his deathbed. So, the leader of the committee of the wise men condensed the thousand vol-

umes of wisdom down to just one sentence: “People live, they suffer, they die. The only thing that outlives them is love.”

Ah, love. It seems everyone has his or her own idea about it. Some de�ine it from the point of view of a poet. Others hear it from the sounds of a musician.

There are those who see it from tragic endings. Yet, it is impenetrable. It is inscrutable. It is unde�inable.

Yet, everyone likes it. No one tires of hearing it, knowing it and reading it. “I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,” wrote Pablo Neruda in 100 Love Sonnets. “I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”

You have never experienced love unless you have experienced it. Intriguing if not perplexing? “Have you ever been in love?” asked Neil Gaiman in The Kindly Ones. “Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable.

It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and

mess you up.”

You never know what hits you when you are in love. “I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her �laming self-respect,” award-winning American author F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote.

“And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.”

Love is so confusing. “There is never a time or place for true love,” writes Sarah Dessen in The Truth About Forever. “It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single �lashing, throbbing moment.”

Love is full of contradiction.

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own,” said Robert A. Heinlein in Strangers in a Strange Land. To which Jodi Picoult seemed to agree. “You don’t love someone because they’re perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they’re not,” she wrote in My Sister’s Keeper.

Love brings the best out of a person – even if it means goodbye. “We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created,” wrote Nich-

olas Sparks in The Notebook.

“For me, love like that has only happened once, and that’s why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory.

I’ll never forget a single moment of it.”

In love, opposite attracts.

Despite all differences, the lovers stick with each other. “No relationship is perfect, ever,’ Dessen wrote in This Lullaby.

“There are always some ways you have to bend, to compromise, to give something up in order to gain something greater... The love we have for each other is bigger than these small differences. And that’s the key.

It’s like a big pie chart, and the love in a relationship has to be the biggest piece. Love can make up for a lot.”

Now, if you want to know what true love, just read the Bible. I Corinthians described it in this manner: “Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or sel�ish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins, but delights in the truth.

It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.”

Now, allow me an anecdote of unrequited love from the pen of Bert Balling: There is a German poem about a Chinaman, named Ming, who had a beautiful garden. He fell in love with the big water lilies on his �ish pond, with one in particular, whom he named Catherine.

But Catherine had eyes only for the gold�ish named Wu. She loved to have him swim by and touch her leaves. But otherwise, the gold�ish never returned Catherine’s love. Because he was thrilled at the sight of a little chicken named Shooshoo.

But then the little chicken loved only one thing: the gardener named Ming.

And so, it went: the gardener Ming loved the waterlily Catherine; Catherine loved the gold�ish Wu; Wu liked the red chicken Shooshoo; and Shooshoo loved the gardener Ming.

A complete circle of love except that no one loved in return.

Now, I remember the song sang by Sharon Cuneta: “Mahal kita, mahal mo siya. Mahal n’ya ay iba. Mas mapalad ka, mahal kita, sa akin walang nagmamahal.”

What a way to end a piece on love!

SECTION 3. TIME FOR PAYMENT/PENALTIES FOR DELINQUENCY – All rental fees for the stalls and spaces shall become due and demandable within the first twenty (20) days of the month. Failure to pay the rental fee within the period required herein shall subject the lessee/ occupant to a surcharge of twenty-five percent (25%) of the amount of the rental fee plus an interest of two percent (2%) per month not to exceed thirty-six (36) months.

SECTION 4. COLLECTION – Collection of the abovementioned fees and charges shall be the responsibility of the City Treasurer. To ensure that such responsibilty is properly and effectively discharged, all collectors, including other personnel involved in the collection function at the Davao Food Terminal Complex shall directly be under the control and supervision of the City Treasurer for collection performance and accountability.

SECTION 5. SEPARABILITY CLAUSE – If, for any reason, any section or provision of this Ordinance is declared unconstitutional or invalid, other section or provisions hereof not affected by such declaration shall continue to be in full force and effect.

SECTION 6. REPEALING CLAUSE – All other city ordinances, Executive Orders and rules and regulations, which are inconsistent with this Ordinance are hereby deemed amended, repealed or modified accordingly.

SECTION 7: EFFECTIVITY – This Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon approval and publication in a newspaper of general circulation in the city of Davao.

ENACTED, on the 26th day of February, 2019, by a unanimous vote of all the Members of the Sanggunian, there being a quorum.

Kawhi brings dominance to dangerous Clippers

ore than an hour after Tuesday's season-opening showdown between the NBA's two Los Angeles teams, a crammed room of reporters awaited the man of the hour – new Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.

Leonard �ittingly arrived well after any other players, just as he had last June when he lifted the NBA Finals trophy with the Toronto Raptors.

This time, Leonard got the best of a juicy match-up against LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the cross town Lakers, scoring 30 points to guide the Clippers to a 112-102 victory.

With respect to James and his well-earned "King" moniker, Leonard reminded that it is he who currently wears the league's crown.

For the two-time NBA champion, dominating has become business as usual.

"This is my ninth year in the NBA. I've been leading teams for about four, �ive, six years. It's the same game," Leonard told reporters.

"It was just different for me tonight because I've got a different coach, different play calls, different defensive structures. Other than that, it's just basketball."

It certainly felt like much more than 'just basketball' at the Staples Center where two title contenders, and their opposing fans, are positioning for elbow room.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel pointed to the throng of media that awaited him before the game and acknowledged: "This feels different than a regular season game."

"It de�initely felt bigger," Clippers Croatian centre Ivica Zubac told Reuters. "You have two teams that are going to compete for a championship and the fans were really into it."
