Doctor nabbed in buy-bust sting

A

surgeon of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) was arrested in a buy-bust operation early Tuesday morning.

The Sta. Ana Police Station identi�ied the suspect as John Perret Herrera, 33, physician of SPMC, and a resident of New Matina, Gravahan in Davao City.

Police report bared Herrera was arrested after he sold a sachet of Shabu worth P1,000 to a police agent who acted as poseur buyer in a police operation along Suazo Street, around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

rnel S. Villegas, a Davao City-based visual artist-photographer whose works have been exhibited in New York, Paris, Busan, South Korea and most on the nation’s capital cities, opens his 15th solo exhibit tonight at the 3rd �loor of Ayala Abreeza Mall.

The exhibit, called “Images 5”, is a collection of Arnel’s recent pen and ink drawings staged by Ayala Abreeza in cooperation with United Durian Artists for the renovation of Archidiocesan Church of St. Jude Shrine.

Opening reception will be at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit will run up to October 30.

The Forest Images 5 are carefully drawn “observa-

tions, nostalgic glimpses and memories of a lush and �leeting natural beauty.”

“These are loving depictions of rapidly vanishing forests and rural scenes, fast becoming memories due to the ravages of logging and mining, and invasions by subdivisions and all that has to do with land development and expansion,” says the artist in a handout about the exhibit.

“The exhibition will hopefully enhance aesthetic as well as ecological awareness for besieged nature, and awaken in us a commitment to love and protect what remains of our natural environment,” he said.

he Davao City Prosecutor’s Of�ice has indicted three employees of the Union Bank of the Philippines and two others over the alleged use of a client’s time deposit policy, accessing over P21 million without the latter’s consent and knowledge.

In a joint resolution, Prosecutor Faizal Padate charged Laurice Fuentes, SME Banking Solutions Account Of�ice; Racine Cajoles, relationship manager of Union Bank Rizal Branch; Paul William Ancheta, relationship manager of the bank’s Quirino branch; Emeterio Ancheta Jr., father of the latter; and Girlie Divinagracia who was used allegedly by the employees in the activity after the management of the bank �iled a case against them.

In a �ive-page joint resolution, Fuentes was charged for 262 counts of violation of Republic Act (RA) 8484 Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998

and quali�ied theft, while Cajoles is also indicted for quali�ied theft.

Ancheta was charged for violation of Article 18 (accomplice) and his father for Article 19 (accesory) of the Revise Penal Code (RPC). Divinagracia was also indicted of violations of Article 19 of RPC and two counts of Presidential Decree 1612 or the Anti Fencing Law. Court records bared that a bank client, whose name is withheld due to security reasons, lodged a complaint on December 11, 2018, claiming that Fuentes used her time deposit policy to avail a credit line agreement (CLA) on their favor.

The CLA was granted on December 18, 2014 with an amount of P16 million without her consent and knowledge. The credit was signed by Fuentes along with Ancheta and Divinagracia as witnesses.

Along with the loan documents, Fuentes allegedly submitted a letter under the client’s name requesting that all the statement of the accounts for the credit line should be sent to Cajoles.

The client averred the documents used by Fuentes, Cajoles and Ancheta were spurious and she just learned that she already had a loan when she received a statement of account for the month November 2018.

In a separate complaint executed by the client, it stated that the document submitted by the three employees were falsi�ied in order to get a loan.

The client said the signatures appeared in the documents were just forged by the employees

just to get the loan without consent.

The victim went to the bank upon learning of the incident to get copy of the loan but the management refused to give. The savings account of the client was also affected since she could not withdraw it due to the pending case.

Records showed, Fuentes made ATM withdrawals 262 times with a total amount of P3.2 million, based on the copy of Close Circuit Television Camera footage submitted by the bank.

There were three checks worth P5.082 million deposited to the account of certain Shiela. Another three checks worth P1.9 million were also deposited to a certain Ryan. Divinagracia, on the other hand, encashed overthe-counter the two checks worth P650, 000.

During her State of the City Address (SOCA) last October 14, Duterte has called out to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) central of�ice for the speedy process of the documents that will pave way for the construction of the bridge.

Escobal is new PRO 11 chief Construction of Davao-Samal bridge to start within 3 years

This after Police BGen Filmore Escobal, the outgoing director of Police Security Protection Group (PSPG), of�icially assumed on Monday, October 22, the post as the acting regional director of the of�ice.

In a turn-over of command ceremony held at the Bagani Hall of Camp Quintin M. Merecido in Catitipan, acting police director general, LtGen Archie Francisco Gamboa administered the change of command in PRO 11.

Gamboa appointed Escobal as the new acting

director of the PRO 11, replacing director BGen Marcelo Morales effective last Sunday, October 21.

Morales, who served as the Davao regional police chief for over a year, took over Escobal’s vacated post as the director of the PSPG in an acting capacity.

Technically, the two high-ranked of�icials only swapped of�ices.

Escobal is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Sambisig” Class of 1991.

he clamor is high for the construction of the bridge that will connect Davao City to Island Garden City of Samal which makes it the most anticipated project to be implemented in the Duterte administration.

The delayed implementation of the bridge has caused disappointment among tourists and locals who frequented the island for its beaches and inland resorts.

The question now remains, will it be implemented or not?

For Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, optimistic is an understatement. But she promised that efforts

are ongoing for the construction of the bridge.

“How optimistic I am?

I don’t want to talk about positive levels but we are doing our best efforts na masugdan na siya within the next three years, “ Duterte told media.

She said in her talks with the contractors, a 1.5-kilometer (Davao-Samal) bridge is easy to build due to the availability of the technology that will be used in connecting islands.

where the WTE will be located. Kana pa lang ang na trabaho nato Karon and ang atong papers naa pa sa Department of Finance because apparently kailangan pa muagi sa DoF padulong sa DENR,” Mayor Sara Duterte told media on Tuesday.

The mayor said she wants to move forward from one agency (DoF) to the next agency that will process the documentation of the said project.

During her SOCA, Duterte nudged DoF for the approval of the city’s WTE with documents still pending at the Finance department.

A

37-year-old man who attempted to sneak in a P1.1 million worth of illegal drugs was arrested at the Task Force Davao checkpoint in Barangay Sirawan, Toril.

Task Force Davao commander Col. Consolito Yecla identi�ied the suspect as Aiveen Rey Alimpoos, a resident of Km 12, Balinao Site, Barangay Sasa.

Yecla said Alimpoos was riding his motorcycle from Digos City, Davao del Sur, and when he stopped in the said checkpoint, one of the TF Davao personnel noticed something in the behavior of the suspect who was seen throwing an object on the ground.

He said the personnel immediately asked the assistance of Toril Police Station to frisk the suspect but Alimpoos attempted to resist but was later on subdued.

Authorities recovered from Alimpoos's possession 17 sachets of shabu weighing around 69.79 grams.

Alimpoos is now facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165 Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Yecla bared a total 242.92 grams of suspected shabu worth P3,600,840.00 were seized this year either in their checkpoints or joint buy-bust operations with the Davao City Police Of�ice.

Signing of ‘Sagip Saka’ Act IRR to enhance agribusiness: Dar

griculture Secretary William Dar on Monday said the signing of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act No. 113211, or the “Sagip Saka” Act, will further enhance agribusiness in the country.

“I thank the authors of RA 113211 as this can concretize, and support the new programs and projects of the Department of Agriculture (DA) because of the inclusive agribusiness system that we would like to pursue beyond just increasing productivity,” Dar said during the signing of the IRR held at the DA central of�ice in Quezon City.

“The value chain system is in place and this gives us now a way forward in terms of broadening the interventions, such as the ‘bagsakan’, tooling (the) packaging centers, so that before farmers can transport their produce, these are well packed,” he added.

Dar said the signing of the IRR also paves the way to identify additional measures where inclusive agribusiness “will really be the way to enhance the services of the DA, including our partners -- the local government units (LGUs)”.

“I have said time and again, there is only one system, one nation. I have talked with DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and DOST (Department of Science and Technology) secretaries. I told them this is the time to converge and synergize, and harmonize everything anchored on inclusive agribusiness system with value chain as the guide,” Dar said.

“I am hoping that the

agribusiness mechanism is a way with which we can further enhance the capacities of the farmers through their associations or cooperatives in transforming themselves towards inclusive agribusiness,” he added.

The Sagip Saka Act, which was signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte on April 17, 2019, establishes the “Farmers and Fisherfolk Enterprise Development Program”, which refers to “the comprehensive set of objectives, targets, and holistic approach in promoting the establishment of enterprises involving agricultural and �ishery products”.

The program shall be integrated and be made consistent with the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Plan, and the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Plan.

The law also entails the creation of the “Farmers and Fisherfolk Enterprise Development Council” to oversee the proper implementation of the program.

It shall be composed of representatives from DA, DTI, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Finance (DOF), as well as representatives from the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), farmers’ and �isherfolk’s organizations, and agriculture/food/restaurant/business sector.

The law likewise provides that activities and funding support for Sagip Saka would be included in DA’s annual plan and budget proposal. (PNA)

Eating out, personal care help decelerate PH inflation rate

P

hilippines’ in�lation rate continues to decelerate since peaking to 6.7 percent in September and October 2018, with Filipinos’ love for food and dining out as well as personal care keeping the overall in�lation a�loat as of September 2019.

Rate of price increases in the Philippines dropped further to 0.9 percent last September from monthago’s 1.7 percent primarily due to slower annual in�lation rate of the heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages.

For one, rice, a staple food, registered 8.9-percent contraction.

The major contributor to in�lation was the restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, with a rate of 3 percent. This particular group, which is one of the 11 major commodity group, accounted for 45.8-percent of the overall in�lation.

Speci�ically, meals eaten outside home posted a 3.2 percent in�lation and 67.7 percent share; personal care, 2.8 percent in�lation and 28 percent share; and personal effects, 2.1 percent in�lation and 3.2 percent share.

(RCBC) lead economist Michael Ricafort told the Philippine News Agency that sustained drop of domestic in�lation rate, along with people’s increased purchasing capacity, is the reason for the rise in the restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

He explained “lower in�lation effectively increases the disposable income and spending power of consumers.”

This “thereby (is) a catalyst in spurring greater economic activities and faster economic/GDP (gross domestic product) growth,” he said.

“Since consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the economy, (this development) thereby makes growth more inclusive since lower in�lation has a positive effect on practically all consumers, as they can purchase more goods and services than otherwise,” he added.

The economist expected domestic in�lation rate to bottom out either last September at 0.9 percent or this month at “slightly less than 0.9 percent due to the high base/denominator effects.”

How LGUs can maximize gains from local tourism industry

By JONALLIER M. PEREZ onsider these scenarios. Case 1 has 1,000 tourists visiting a destination in one day, spending P500 each per day. That would be a P500,000 contribution to the economy. Case 2 involves only 500 tourists visiting in one day but spending P1,000 each per day---the same amount of money being contributed to the economy. But the second scenario has half of the carbon footprint compared with the �irst case. It also means half amount of wastes and half demand on scarce resources. Since the local service frontliners will be serving fewer people, it can be presumed that service quality will be better. There will be less congestion in the destination, perhaps resulting to better tourist experience.

There remains a continuing challenge, particularly in rural areas in the country where primary tourist attractions are fragile ecosystems and vulnerable culture. This will be more pronounced as the Philippines has been identi�ied as one of the most vulnerable in the world because of climate change.

Weather disturbances are becoming more severe

and frequent, putting at risk many ecotourist destinations scattered in all regions in the Philippines.

According to data shared by the Climate Change Commission, 98% of coral reefs in Southeast Asia will die by 2050. Approximately one million hectares of grasslands in the country will be prone to �ire in the future. Around 60% of the local government units are

found along the coastal regions. Increase in the sea level---observed sea levels in the Philippines is 60 cm at its highest, about three times higher than the global average of 19 cm only--will put at risk 62 coastal provinces, 822 municipalities and 25 major coastal cities. This will result in the relocation of around 13.5 million Filipinos.

So, if you are local chief executive, say a mayor of a rural town, eager to reap bene�its from the booming tourism industry in the country, but sentient of concepts such as “sustainable development”, “climate change”, etc., you would rather put more emphasis on tourist expenditures than on tourist arrivals. Climate change affects tourism and tourism is also a contributor to climate change.

This brings to the fore the issue of economic leakage in local tourism scene.

There are many forms of economic leakage in the sector, particularly in rural areas. The most common is when tourists spend most of their money outside the destination. To illustrate, say a group of South Koreans visited the Tbolis in

he Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) on Tuesday refuted the allegation that around 600 private hospitals have threatened to sever ties with it next year for supposed unpaid claims amounting to billions of pesos.

"We �ind these allegations strange and amusing... I think it's the other way around. These hospitals do not want to cease their accreditation with Philhealth," PhilHealth

president and chief executive of�icer Ricardo Morales said in an interview.

According to the group, the PhilHealth owes PHAP unpaid claims amounting to P2.5 billion.

The torch that will be lit up to signal the start of the 30th SEA Games was revealed on August 22 to mark the 100-days countdown to the sporting event scheduled to be held from November 30 to December 11, 2019. The ceremonial torch relay will kick off around a month before the biennial sports conclave once the previous torch arrives from the 2017 SEA Games host country, Malaysia. The relay will start in Davao, going over to Cebu, and eventually, Manila. The torch was designed by renowned Filipino metal sculptor Daniel dela Cruz. Organizers explained that the torch signi�ies “the Philippines’ goal of lighting the way towards a higher level of organizing the biennial games which is on its 30th year.”

It is not acsertainable at this point if the designs of the torch and other symbols of the Games were consulted with Dabawenyo chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission William “Butch” Ramirez, with Senator Bong Go, or Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, or if it was discussed with President Rodrigo Duterte. It can only be surmised that just like the controversial SEA Games logo, it was decided within the organizing committee level.

Games torch represents the Filipino passion for excellence while being a cooperative nation in the region. Sampaguita or the Philippine jasmine is said to symbolize humility, simplicity, purity, a promise to love, warm welcome, and adoration.

It recently gained global attention when Miss Universe Catriona Gray wore a jumpsuit out�it inspired by the national �lower during her homecoming parade. The Sampaguita is also used in the world-awardwinning Filipino ARC Botanical Gin. Incidentally, Davao’s Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana), which was proposed to be the second national �lower some years back, was not in the discussion for the torch design.

Based on record, the Philippine Senate passed a bill declaring walingwaling (Vanda sanderiana) as the national �lower alongside Sampaguita in February 2013. A similar bill in the House of Representatives was passed a year earlier in 2012. Former city councilor of Davao Peter Laviña also authored a resolution endorsing the declaration of Waling-waling as national �lower.

In the end, the proposal was shot down.

While under normal circumstances the bill would become law after being signed by the President, the fate of Waling-waling was ultimately ended when it was vetoed by President Benigno Aquino III.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Pope Francis has encouraged port welfare workers and chaplains to continue with renewed ecumenical spirit their efforts to protect and safeguard the rights of all people of the sea, particularly seafarers and �ishermen.

Pope Francis quoted portions of Pope St John Paul II’s 1997 Apostolic Letter, Stella Maris, on the maritime apostolate as guidance for port welfare workers to “strive to see that the people of the sea are provided abundantly with whatever is required to lead holy lives; to recognise and promote the mission which all the faithful - and in particular the laity - are called to exercise in the Church and in the maritime world in accordance with their speci�ic state.”

Pope Francis emphasized that the port welfare workers must “help the people of the sea to know Jesus Christ and to live according to His teachings”.

Pope Francis was shown during the opening ceremonies of the World Conference of the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from October 21-25, 2019.

“With compassion and discretion, you give them a chance to pour out their hearts”, Pope Francis earlier said In another statement adding that listening to the people of the sea and to their material and spiritual needs is part of the ministry.

Pope Francis said that without seafarers, the global economy would come to a standstill; and without �ishermen, many parts of the world would starve.

The international shipping industry is the life blood of the global economy as it is responsible for the carriage of around 90% of world trade.

However, Pope Francis said that they face the seafaring dangers of storms and piracy, long periods of time away

from their families and working conditions that are often harsh and low-paying.

ICMA is a free association of 29 charitable organisations working for the welfare of seafarers, �ishers and their families. These organisations represent various Christian churches and communities that operate in more than 400 seafarers’ centres in more than 100 countries. ICMA was founded in 1969 to encourage collaboration and mutual assistance among seafarers’ ministry organisations.

The 2019 World Conference theme is “50 Years of Working Together for Seafarers, Fishers and their Families” attended by more than 250 guests from ICMA member organisations around the world engaged in the welfare of seafarers, �ishers, and their families.

In a fragmented and divided society, it is the mission of ICMA to promote unity, peace and tolerance as it is the duty of every chaplain and welfare

worker to serve the stakeholders regardless of nationality, religion, culture, gender or ethnic origin.

The Philippines earlier hosted in 2016 the ICMA “Training and Immersion Course” for workers serving seafarers from the Philippines which allowed participants to gain a �irst-hand knowledge of Filipino seafarers’ social and cultural background and other institutions in the Filipino maritime sector.

Due to the high number of Filipino seafarers who visit port based welfare centres around the world, the course gave ship visitors and port based welfare providers the opportunity to learn more about the community of Filipino seafarers so as to better serve them.

China, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Russian Federation and Ukraine are estimated to be the �ive largest supply countries for all seafarers (of�icers and ratings).

To date, the Philippines is the biggest supplier of ratings while China is the biggest supplier of of�icers.

It is estimated that there is one Filipino seafarer for every four to �ive complements on board a vessel at any time.

The estimated 337,502 deployed Filipino seafarers in 2018 remitted $6.14 billion or around P318.55 billion.

The sea-based sector’s remittances comprise at least 22% of the total dollar remittances of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

DREAMS DO COME TRUE We all dream. Whether you are young or old, you go into that mysterious world when you sleep. “Dreaming is an act of pure imagination, attesting in all men a creative power, which if it were available in waking, would make every man a Dante or Shakespeare,” H.F. Hedge once said.

“Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives,” dream expert William Dement tells us. Dr. Edgar Cayce considers dream as “today’s answers to tomorrow’s questions.” And from the TV hit series, ‘X-Files,’ comes this quotable quote: “Dreams are answers to questions we haven’t yet �igured out how to ask.”

We have known some great writers who took their inspiration from dreams. “I’m sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for (H.G.) Wells and (Jules) Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I’m rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books.” So said Arthur C. Clarke while addressing the US Congress in 1975.

Yes, he was the same guy who wrote Technology and the Future. In the said book, he penned: “The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.”

Remember the words of The Impossible Dream, the theme song of the 1972 movie, Man of La Mancha (portrayed

by Peter O’Toole, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance). The �irst stanza goes this way: “To dream the impossible dream / To �ight the unbeatable foe / To bear with unbearable sorrow / To run where the brave dare not go.”

Joe Darion, who wrote the lyrics, scribbled the second stanza with these words: “To right the unrightable wrong / To love pure and chaste from afar / To try when your arms are too weary / To reach the unreachable star.”

Many years ago, there lived a very old man in North China. His house faced South and right in front of his door stood the two gigantic peaks of Taihung and Wangwu. They blocked his way to the south.

So, he sat down with his sons and made a solemn promise

and then got out his hoe. They made up their minds to hack away those two mountains.

A neighbor saw them set to work and shook his head.

“How stupid can one get?” he told the father. “It’s absolutely impossible for you to carry away these might mountains.”

The old man smiled and replied, “Well, when I die, my sons will carry on the work.

The Bible states, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God” (Luke 18:27). This must be the reason why French novelist (1957 Nobel Prize for

Literature) Albert Camus commented, “We turn toward God only to obtain the impossible.”

“Impossible is a word only to be found in the dictionary of fools,” commented French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. “I love those who yearn for the impossible,” admitted German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible,” Walt Disney, pioneer of animated cartoon �ilms, declared.

History is replete with impossible stories. Demosthenes stuttered. He �illed his mouth with pebble and walked the seashore shouting at the waves until in spite of his handicap he became Greece’s most famous orator.

To England, Horatio Nelson is the greatest naval hero.

Yet, he never conquered the seasickness which assailed him the �irst time he took to the water and kept recurring all his life whenever he boarded a ship.

What grander symphonies were ever written than Beethoven’s? And yet the master melodist was deaf and never his own immortal music.

Glenn Cunningham, who hung up new records for the

mile in running, had both legs so badly burned that he was expected never to be able to walk again. Against all odds, he defeated the impossible.

If you think you cannot do the task, don’t quit. You know somewhere and somehow, you can do it. As American editor and writer Elbert Hubbard puts it, “No one ever gets far unless he accomplishes the impossible at least once a day.”

SECTION 3. TIME FOR PAYMENT/PENALTIES FOR DELINQUENCY – All rental fees for the stalls and spaces shall become due and demandable within the first twenty (20) days of the month. DAVAO CITY is known for the king of fruits--durian--which, admittedly, is not the best-smelling scent in a fruit anyway. But you can always pinch your nose and forget about the smell of durian.

Let’s talk about scents in the real scent of the word. Now what happens if a scent so fragrant as French parfums is concocted in Davao City?

Grasse has had a prospering perfume industry since the end of the 18th century. Grasse is the centre of the French perfume industry. Yes, Grasse, a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department (of which it is a sub-prefecture), on the French Riviera. The town is considered the world’s capital of perfume.

According to Wiki, it obtained two flowers in the Concours des villes et villages fleuris contest and was made “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (town of art and history).

mmaculate Heart of Mary Academy (IHMA) shone brightest at the close of the 1st Samboukan Festival Mati Taekwondo Sparring League held at the grounds of the City Hall of Mati over the weekend.

The IHMA jins dominated the competition hauling a total of 10 gold medals, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals to claim the overall champion title.

Davao Oriental State University, which produced the most valuable player in the men’s category in Edzel Elijah Beloria, struck for 3 gold medals, 3

silvers and 2 bronzes good for second place, followed

by Matiao National High School with 3 gold and 2 silver medals.

Mati National Comprehensive High School, on the other hand, �inished fourth with 1 gold, 2 silvers and 1 bronze medal while Davao Oriental Regional Science High School placed �ifth with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Athena So�ia Vicente delivered the lone gold for the Davao Oriental Regional Science High School as she pocketed the women’s most valuable player award.

Sunbeam Christian School of Mati, meanwhile, had 1 gold to rank at sixth overall in the event part of the 2019 Palaro sa Sambuokan which formally opened Monday morning, October 21, at the City Hall Compound during the �lag raising ceremony.

Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat graced the opening ceremony of the week-long sports festival.

2019 Palarong Pambansa bronze Medalist Aljon Jimenez also attended the opening rites along with Mati City councilors.

In her message, the

lady mayor urged everyone to “promote camaraderie and sportsmanship thru sports”.

Jimenez led the Oath of Sportsmanship for some 200 participants.

The event was followed by the Parade of the participants after the Flag raising Ceremony. Among the sports included in the Palaro sa Sambuokan 2019 were Boxing, Basketball, Volleyball, Taekwondo, Chess, Billiards, Duathlon, Freesbie and Football.

Hostilities formally reeled off at 10:00 in the morning at the Emmanuel Pelaez Activity Center.

ewly-crowned Amateur Asian Boxing Association (AIBA) World Women Boxing champion Nesthy Petecio is eyeing a return to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games with a bang on December even as she prepares for the Olympics quali�ier in February next year.

“Kailangang makabawi (We need to recover),” said Petecio on Friday at the University of Baguio (UB) athletics of�ice prior to her courtesy call to University president Javier Bautista and at her department, the School of International Tourism and Hotel Management.

Petecio, a native of Davao City, is a �irst-year college student.

The tourism student won the gold in the AIBA world championship last October 13 in Ulan Ude, Russia when she beat Russian and hometown pride Liudmila Vorontsove in three of the �ive judges' cards.

The 27-year-old ended the country’s seven-year drought in the world championship with teammate Josie Gabuco last winning it in the light �lyweight division against China’s Shiqu Xi. Now, Petecio is eyeing gold in the SEAG on December 2 to 7 hoping to erase the stigma of the 2015 edition in Singapore where she lost against a Vietnamese foe in the �inals.

“I really want to get back and win the gold this time in the SEAG,” said Petecio, who missed the 2017 SEAG. After that, it will be the Olympics quali�ier somewhere in China where she hopes to land a seat in the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

Petecio is actually seeded in the quali�ier but needs to get at least a bronze medal to qualify.

To accomplish both, she needs to �ly with the Philippine boxing team to Gold Coast, Queensland in Australia to train for at least three weeks.

“She needs to �ly there

so she can train with female boxers her size. We do not have many boxers of her size here,” national team assistant coach Rey Galido said.

Petecio is �irst �lying to her hometown of Davao for a �lag-raising event with Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte on Monday and will return to Baguio on October 26 to get her stuff for the Australia trip.

But she is also expected to grace the unity run for the SEAG with possibly Hidilyn Diaz and fellow boxer Eumir Marcial.

“Though I am not really sure if they will be there since they have a busy schedule, with the SEAG fast approaching,” she said.

Fellow gold medalist Carlo Yulo, who grabbed the limelight a day before Petecio when he won gold in gymnastics, has already �lown to Japan to continue his training.

Another Olympics quali�ier EJ Obiena is also out of the country for training, “so I am not really sure if they can make it,” she added.

But for now, Petecio is contented with her windfall, a total of PHP3 million and counting.

She received PHP1 million from the Philippine Sports Commission upon her arrival, a PHP1 million from President Rodrigo Duterte and another PHP1 million from the MVP Foundation. She is expected also to get a similar amount from Senator Manny Pacquiao.

Baguio is also set to give her an amount for winning in an international competition.

“May pampagawa na ng bahay namin, siguro matatapos na namin (I have now the means to have our house �inished),” said Petecio, who as a small child saw her family evicted from their house in Davao City and has to move back to her father’s hometown in Davao del Sur. “I can also �inish a regular degree here in UB after �inishing my associate arts studies,” she added. The short but stocky boy who ruled the artistic �loor exercises in the 49 kgs reminds us to never stop dreaming.

News videos of Caloy’s rise to prominence and success showed his humble origins. From being an innocent seven-year-old wide-eyed boy just looking to have some fun tumbling here and there inside an almost decrepit gymnastic venue to the welladorned foreign competition sites, Yulo has achieved where

others of his ilk have failed.

I have been a long-time fan of gymnastics, enamored so much by the gentle heroics of a tenyear old Romanian lass Nadia Comaneci many Olympic seasons ago.

I have often chatted with the late GAP president Sotero Tejada in the 90s after the PSC saw birth in 1990. He was very patient with his wards, hoping that a day will come when a world gymnastics champion would emerge from among his wards.

I remember him telling me – half-jokingly - that gymnastics was best �itted for “Lilliputians” like us. He often redundantly mentioned Comaneci’s Olympic

feats as if he was already conjuring up an image of a Filipino world gymnastic champion right out there.

He was happy the PSC came into being as it afforded his sports association to hire much-needed foreign coaches for the girls’ and boys’ divisions. I saw and met several foreign coaches – from China, Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries - who all had sterling credentials, both as former athletes and coaches.

Success is indeed not an overnight thing.

It took gymnastics to produce a Carlos Yulo nearly thirty years to the day the PSC was legislated. It was like planting a tree,

watering and nurturing it with fertilizer before harvesting its full-grown, ripened fruits.

The diminutive Caloy was just as humble as when he was declared winner at the podium, not profuse with language but exceedingly aware that a Filipino can be the best provided he exudes positive con�idence in himself.

Yulo can be said to be an “experiment” in the same manner as those who came and went before him. The difference was probably that Caloy arrived at the most opportune moment when there were more foreign training and exposures available and the best of the foreign coach-

es were hired.

I am certain Caloy would not know fear anymore. Nor would he be intimidated by the opposition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Instead, he will stamp his winning form, establish his integrity and capability as a world titleholder, conscious of the mantra that a Filipino surely can.

I pray the PSC – always suffering from fund lack – will not be too a spendthrift to grant Yulo the necessary funding.

Cor Jesu Red Lions rise up from rubble with first win

ising from a horrible earthquake experience that damaged one of its buildings, the Cor Jesu College (CJC) of Digos City Red Lions displayed resiliency by securing its �irst win in the ongoing Collegiate Sponsors League (CSL) Escandor Cup on Sunday, October 20.

The Red Lions devoured the St. John Paul II College of Davao (SPCD) Saints 79-68, in its home soil in their debut game held at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Rendey Jan Relacion posted a double-double �igure of 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Red Lions who will next face the rookie-laden San Pedro College (SPC) Stallions on October 26.

CJC supposed to play its �irst game last Thursday but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Davao executive program of�icer and league chairman Ronel Leuterio opted to postpone the match considering the damage caused by the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Davao Region and certain areas in Mindanao.

In another action, Redyn Arellano lifted Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors once more as they out drowned Davao Merchant Marine Academy College of Southern Philippines (DMMA) Mariners 76-67.

Arellano secured his second SPC-Mandarin player of the game after scoring a double-double composed of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Holy Cross College of Sasa (HCCS) Spartans, meanwhile, won over Brokenshire College of Davao via default.
