HELPING OUT Japan commits to assist Davao in resolving problems on wastes By MAYA M. PADILLO
T
he Government of Japan has committed to assist Davao City in resolving problems on wastes.
Kitakyushu City Mayor Kenji Kitahashi said it is their aim to assist Davao City in resolving its problems on wastes and that it is their ultimate goal to see Davao City succeed in resolving these issues. “Three years ago I was in the City of Davao to bring sister cities and our aim is to assist Davao City in resolving its problems with processing of garbage and waste materials and we have been supporting each other through cooperation. Our ultimate aim is to see Davao succeed in resolving all of these problems so that Davao City becomes the model not only for the Philippines but for the entire Southeast Asian region,” Kitahashi said in his speech during the opening of the Davao Japanese Community 100 Years Anniversary Expo held at the atrium of SM Lanang Premier on Friday.
Davao City has a sister city agreement since 2018 with Kitakyushu which would provide technical support in the construction of the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facility in Davao. Kitahashi also looks forward of greater cooperation between their city and Davao. During the opening, which was highlighted with an opening of sake barrel, Japanese performers performed a drum presentation called Goheitabayashi and a Yukata show. “The bond between Davao and Japan has fortified through the years. From elementary to tertiary academic institutions to our very own “Little Tokyo” in Mintal, Japanese imprints have become more and more vivid across the landscapes of Davao City,” said Davao City Mayor Sara
