DOH: Refrain from giving invalidated info on meningococcemia case

ealth agencies of the government advised the public to refrain from spreading unvalidated information regarding a reported Meningococcemia-related case in a hospital in Davao City on Friday, August 30.

This issue sparked after several posts circulated online alarming the public of a 4-year-old child's death caused by the dreaded disease at the Brokenshire Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon.

The viral post read: "CONFIRMED! A boy from Davao City died from Meningococcemia. Let's be careful. Sa Bangkal nag school ang bata. Very alarming.

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD PRRD wants infra projects completed before term ends

resident Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he wants the major government projects under the Build, Build, Build program �inished before his term ends in June 2022.

He said the Sangley Point International Airport should be �inished in two years, according to Malacañang.

“Whatever your plans, do it fast,” Duterte told Cavite local of�icials and companies involved in the airport project during a courtesy call at the Grand

Hyatt Hotel in Beijing, China. Duterte is currently visiting China until Sunday.

Involved in the project are Cavite Holdings, China Communication Construction Co. (CCCC) and China Airport Construction Group Co. Ltd. In a separate courtesy call on Friday, construction

industry delegates from the Philippines met with Duterte to express their full support for the administration’s Build, Build, Build program and suggest that a law be crafted to ensure continuity in the implementation of major government infrastructure projects.

They also told Duterte that China is a source of new technologies including techniques on improving quality and minimizing wastage.

The construction delegates also want the administration to have a multiyear program to sustain the Build, Build, Build program and streamline programs using wide use of electronic data.

According to Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, who was present during the courtesy call, having a law institutionalizing government spending will ensure continuity of big-ticket infrastructure projects.

‘Meningococcemia boy’ had high fever: Report

T

he four-year-old boy who died due to suspected meningococcemia had high fever prompting his parents to rush him to the hospital. He expired later of what is an apparent case of the dreaded disease described as rare but serious bacterial infection.

A neighbor, who requested anonymity living a few steps from the boy’s residence, told Edge Davao that he personally learned the boy was rushed to Brokenshire Integrated Hospital Ministries Inc (BIHMI), on Friday, because of high fever.

On Saturday, the team of Dr. Cleofe Tabada, chief of the Department of Health’s (DOH) Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) inspected the boy’s school, Leap of Faith Learning Center, Inc. (LOFLC) at SM Village, Bangkal.

The administration of LOFLC issued a statement earlier assuring that the school is in constant communication and closely coordinating with the LOFLC parents, guardians, faculty and school personnel as well as concerned agencies such as DOH and City Health Of�ice of Davao (CHO).

The school also reminded the students to consult their family physician as soon as possible as meningococcemia is considered as medical emergency.

The school administration is also asking for the public’s cooperation by respecting the family’s

privacy and appeals to everyone to refrain from sharing photos and posting comments on social media that may give any more undue distress to the family concerned.

The meningococcemia scare came after a netizen posted on social media regarding the child’s death at BIHMI. However, BIHMI denied in a statement about a meningococcemia outbreak in the city.

According to BIHMI, the patient was a suspected case who exhibited signs and symptoms same with the case de�inition of of the disease.

The collected specimen has been sent out to the microbiologist for con�irmation and infection Control protocols were immediately instituted.

The ER and the hospital has been cleared by the Infection Control Committee and is now safe and operating normally as usual.

Meanwhile, the CHO clari�ied in a statement that there is no absolute data available now that con�irms the child died of meningococcemia as blood samples were taken for examination and con�irmatory tests.

CHO added that the hospital has strictly observed and conducted measures based on standard medical protocols to control possible infection and spread.

While waiting for results of the investigation, the CHO encouraged the public to keep calm, be cautious, and to refrain from spreading unnecessary information.

Matriarch appeals for respect from squabbling Yanson kids

livia V. Yanson, the 85-year-old matriarch of the Yanson Group of Bus Companies, appealed to her children to honor and respect her as their mother and co-founder of the bus conglomerate as she has only a few years to live.

"If you go out of your way and spend hours to be with your friends, why cannot you spare just 30 minutes a week and spend it with me? If I call your phones, you would not answer. When I visit you, you would give all reasons not to see me," she said.

"Am I asking too much from each one of you? Many of you have not even visited me in my house since your father died. My pillow is full of tears every morning because of all the pain you are giving me. I think I don't deserve this after I have sacri�iced my life for each one of you. My only wish in the twilight of my life is to see all you as a family and not �ighting one another," Olivia said.

"Your father and myself made sure that each one of you would live more than comfortably but instead of counting your blessings, you turned against each oth-

er. If you continue to �ight each other, there would be nothing left for the next generation. Be reminded that you are only stewards of this business for the next generation and your actions would determine their future. What more do you want?” she said.

“Each one of you has already more than enough, so set aside your anger, jealousy and greed and instead work on forgiving each other so that the next generation and the generations to come can also enjoy the blessings we have left behind,” the Yanson matriarch said.

“I pray that Emily, Celina and Ricky will see the light and listen to the call of their elder brother Roy that there is no point in all these madness and at the end of the day no one wins because we are �ighting our brother and sister," Olivia said.

Olivia, together with

her late husband Ricardo Vallacar Sr., established the Yanson Group in 1968 and oversaw its growth to become a bus conglomerate that now employs 18,000 individuals who provide transport services to 700,000 passengers across the country daily.

A nurse by profession, Olivia helped her husband manage the business from the ground up. "I remember before Ceres became a successful enterprise, we could even hardly buy food and to feed all our children," she recalled.

Ceres Liner is one of the bus brands of Vallacar Transit Inc. (VTI), the largest company under the Yanson Group.

Olivia reminded her children about the hardship that they went through as a family before the success of their business divided them, instead of bringing them together.

"We could hardly afford to buy medicines when our children became sick, or ensure their milk supply. I often stayed up all night so no mosquitos would bite them. Yet today, after

more than �ive decades of tirelessly working for the success of the business, I got into this stage of seeing some of my children going against me and leaving me with nothing after all my hard work alongside their father,” she said.

“Precisely, I worked so hard so they did not have to endure what we have endured and that I would not beg money from them. It feels so sad that they have forsaken the hand that fed them," Olivia said.

"Now that our business has �lourished, it is very painful on my part as a parent, painful to a mother like me that I have to go through all these. I have sacri�iced so much and done things beyond the capabilities of a nurse, performing functions outside my core skills like being assigned to manage the warehouse, handle �inances as well as ticketing," she said.

Olivia handled the administrative operations of the company, including the management of the group's thousands of employees.

he Philippine Medical Association is supporting the World Health Organization in its recommendation on the use of the dengue vaccine among other preventive measures, as the number of dengue cases continues to rise in the country.

“The Philippine Medical Association supports WHO current recommendations on the use of the dengue vaccine as a supplement to other preventive measures particularly on vector control and early detection and appropriate treatment,” it said in a statement.

“Clinical trials and studies have shown that dengue vaccine will help individuals who had previous dengue infection from getting severe disease,” it added.

The PMA also recommended the following: Only persons aged 9-45 years old with evidence of previous dengue infection would be vaccinated.

Prior to vaccination, serological screening using Dengue 1gG ELISA or rapid diagnostic tests should be carried out.

The dengue vaccine may be given to individuals who are interested, willing and aware of the bene�its and possible risk of the vaccines.

The Department of Health declared a national dengue epidemicthis month as the number of dengues cases continue to rise.

The Philippines at present has the highest dengue fatality ratein all of Asia with 720, with the DOH recording a total of 167,607 dengue cases as of July 27.

This was 98% higher than the number of cases recorded in the same period last year.

The spike in cases came as debates continued on the use of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia, with

PRRD to Chinese Premier: WPS code is least of US concerns

he code of conduct in the South China Sea is the "least" of the United States concerns, President Rodrigo Duterte told Chinese Premier Li Kequiang Friday.

Duterte made the statement during his bilateral meeting with Li, saying he has been receiving "so many requests" on the progress of the sea code.

"The biggest urgency really comes from the Western world and I would like to tell you now, in front of the media and all, that the passage of the code of conduct by China and everyone is the least concern of America," the Philippine leader said of the country's long-time ally.

Duterte's latest remarks are far from his earlier statement that China could be delaying the talks for the much-awaited agreement to manage tensions in the disputed waters.

“They are delaying it

and it’s causing so many incidents and one day it will --- one mistake, a miscalculation there and mahirap na bawian ‘yun (it's dif�icult to take it back),” he told reporters earlier this month.

China and Southeast Asian countries with con�licting maritime claims agreed in 2017 to start talks on a sea code, seen to replace the non-binding 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the West Philippine Sea. The Philippines, as country coordinator for the dialogue partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and China, is is tasked to handle negotiations between the regional bloc and Beijing for a binding code of conduct until 2021.

inancing company Aeon Credit Service Philippines opened its �irst branch in Davao City and is eyeing to capture driver-members of a Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) in this city.

Lawyer Dennis Siapno, executive vice president of Aeon Credit Service said they are targeting customers that are unbanked and undeserved like the tricycle drivers to help them improve their lives.

“Aeon Credit is a �inancing company in the Philippines with head of�ice in Japan, we actually offer consumer loans meaning retail loans to customers.

So unlike credit cards or the traditional we do cater to those who actually do not have any bank accounts. It is very dif�icult to borrow if you don’t have any credit history but for us we took the risk and we really support the government’s �inancial inclusion.

That is the vision of Aeon even in Japan. We wanted everyone on board through �inancial services that eventually improve their lives and provide them source of livelihood like the tricycle drivers,” Siapno said.

Aeon Credit is located at the second level of the Davao Finance Center.

Siapno said a tricycle driver could avail a loan as high as P150, 000 with an interest of 1.5 percent that they can pay for four to six months or two years.

When it comes to the tricycle loans, Siapno said their approach is to course it to the TODA organization and from there, they present it to the entire organization.

“TODAs in the Philippines are very organized.

They have one set of leaders and members report to their leaders. The approach is not on the TODA mismo who will actually avail of the loan but individuals,” he said.

Michael Tabanay, Vice President for Business Control Division of Aeon said presently, they are working with over 30 TODAs in Davao City and their goal is to cover as much as

a hundred. He said in Davao City, they are strong in the motorcycle brand RE (rear engine) Bajaj.

“We want to go as far as Tagum City. Within the year we will be going to General Santos City. We have a very good connections with tricycle drivers here in Davao City. Like in Buhangin, we �inance Bajaj motorcycles,” he said.

Tabanay said they have a sales target of P40 million to P50 million a month in Davao City. “ We are aiming to achieve that by working with the TODA presidents.

We want to partner as much as many todas as possible. Secondly, we want to work closely with Emcor, which is a staple already when you want to buy a motorcycle,” he added.

Siapno said with Aron Credit TODA drivers no longer rent their tricycles, but own them. “These are people who don’t have source of income, which is only the tricycles but we took the risk and so far we are doing very well.”

he Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Friday announced its plans to start construction of the Duterte administration’s �irst shipbuilding facility next year to bolster the country’s shipping industry.

In a press conference following the conclusion of the Maritime Safety Summit for Domestic Shipping here, PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago said they have already completed the feasibility study for the 10-hectare facility project.

“We have already identi�ied the location. But we apologize that we cannot disclose the actual location because we don't want to

encourage speculations dun sa (in the) landholdings,” Santiago said.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade said the plan has been eight months in the making, and the facility would not only build passenger ships but leisure vessels as well.

Initially, the PPA chief said the facility aims to build only one design or one type of passenger vessel, a roll-on/roll-off vessel or a fast craft, and produce these as much as possible to replace old and unsafe vessels such as wooden-hull bancas which the DOTr hopes to fully retire as soon as possible.

“We want to be able to

deploy as many passenger vessels as possible during the time we are retiring or decommissioning vessels that are unacceptable for the safety of our passengers,” Santiago said.

Following the conclusion of the feasibility study, the PPA said it is now deliberating how the project would commence – either it would be government-initiated through public-private partnerships, or through solicited proposals.

“We will also look at the appropriate vehicle, either an (operate and maintain contract) or some other arrangement with experts.

Initially, we are looking at inviting manufacturers in-

Beyond Meat Philippine representative Dr. Andrei Udal Friday met with Secretary Emmanuel F. Pinol at the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) of�ice in Davao City to relay the keen interest of the company in sourcing non-GMO and healthy cassava, mushrooms and soybeans from Mindanao.

He was referred to the MinDA chief by his daughter, Dr. Maria Krista Piñol-Solis, now a member of the Provincial Board of North Cotabato.

A check with wikipedia showed the following entry: “Beyond Meat is a Los Angeles-based producer of plant-based meat substitutes founded in 2009

by Ethan Brown. The company’s products became available across the United States in 2013.

“In May 2016, it released the �irst plantbased burger to be sold in the meat section of grocery stores, on an international basis.

The company has products designed to replace beef and pork sausage” When informed that the Indigenous Tribes of Mindanao have been growing the highly edible local cassava variety, Dr. Udal said the company will prefer to engage with the tribal farmers.

Sources for mushroom and sobeans which are non-GMO were also identi�ied by the MinDA for Beyond Meat.

Dr. Udal said a technical team of the company will visit the sources of the food materials to ensure strict adherence to safe farming practices and ensure healthy products.

President urges Chinese to invest in Philippines

resident Rodrigo Duterte on Friday assured Chinese businessmen their investments will be protected in a corruption-free environment as he urged them to invest in the Philippines.

“Let me thank our Chinese friends for the interest to be part of the Philippines’ growth story. We are encouraged by your vote of con�idence in our economy,” Duterte said during the Philippines-China Business Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Beijing, according to Malacañang.

He told the attendees the Philippines has had one of the fastest growing economies in the region and the world, and the administration has embarked on the Build, Build, Build infrastructure program to sustain the positive trajectory.

"We have grown for the past 82 consecutive quarters and recorded above 6% annual growth rate since 2012," Duterte said.

The Build, Build, Build program welcomes more Philippine-China cooperation, he said.

Malacañang said the country has a Construction Industry Roadmap for 2022 until 2030 designed to increase the value of the construction industry.

Philippine construction delegates had its �irst mission to China to benchmark on digital building technologies and ways to deliver quality construction ef�iciently and effectively, the Palace added.

It also said Philippine construction industry players are looking forward to partnering with their Chinese counterparts in having new and sustainable construction technologies and solutions.

The said project will enhance the Philippines' capacity to produce by 2030 high-quality and reliable steel products, Duterte said.

Duterte also said there are opportunities in the manufacturing, agriculture and services sectors.

"The Philippines and China agreed to develop industrial parks where Chinese investors and manufacturers can set up factories," the Palace said.

Duterte said construction for the �irst industrial park is scheduled to start in the �irst half of 2020.

"I am pleased to note that the construction... and all others...investors... to utilize this platform and harness our growing domestic market of more than 100 million people,” he said.

Duterte also said Chinese businessmen will be well-positioned to invest in the country with the Philippines' young and skilled workforce.

Meningococcemia, who?

Friday’s viral scare after the death of a 4-year old boy suspected of having meningococcemia, which spread like wild�ire on social media, must serve as an awakening for people to be fully aware of the dreaded disease and how to detect and avoid it. For once, spreading unvalidated information in the internet does not help. It only causes undue panic.

Nevertheless, the viral post has served its purpose and now people are googling meningococcemia than just sharing the post.

It is best to know what this disease is all about and that way, it can be avoided.

According to medical journals, “meningococcemia is a rare infection caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. This is the same type of bacteria that can cause meningitis. When the bacteria infect the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, it’s called meningitis.

When the infection remains in the blood but doesn’t infect the brain or spinal cord, it’s called meningococcemia. It’s also possible to have both meningitis and meningococcemia at the same time. In this case, the bacteria appears in the bloodstream �irst and then passes into the brain. Neisseria meningitidis bacteria are common in the upper respiratory tract and don’t necessarily cause illness. Although anyone can get meningococcemia, it’s most common in babies, children, and young adults.”

the random post and sharing cannot be blamed for sheer lack of deeper knowledge, rather it is a knee-jerk reaction to this medical emergency status of the disease.

So what is the mode of transmission of this disease?

People spread meningococcal bacteria to other people by sharing respiratory and throat secretions (saliva or spit). Generally, it takes close (for example, coughing or kissing) or lengthy contact to spread these bacteria. Fortunately, they are not as contagious as germs that cause the common cold or the �lu. People need to understand that we do not catch the bacteria through casual contact or by breathing air where someone with meningococcal disease has been.

Sometimes the bacteria spread to people who have had close or lengthy contact with a patient with meningococcal disease. Those at increased risk of getting sick include: people in the same household, roommates, and anyone with direct contact with the patient’s oral secretions, such as a partner of the opposite sex.

And for the prevention, people with close contacts of someone with meningococcal disease should receive antibiotics to help prevent them from getting the disease. It is called prophylaxis.

However, it must be made clear that people who are in contact with those af�licted with the disease do not necessarily have the disease.

Getting a prophylaxis is a mode of prevention.

In case of doubt, it helps to speak with a doctor if one believes he is at risk.

WHAT MAKES THE DAVAO ECONOMY TICK The abundant table of fruits greets the visitor to the Davao region, and signi�ies the richness of its potentials.

The DAVAO region, which enconpasses the 5 Davao provinces and Davao City has been growing at a strong pace well above the country’s 6% growth over the last six years.

The 8.6% growth it clocked in 2018 shows consistency that has gotten many investors interested in its potentials. True enough, its growth is higher than many Southeast asian countries.

Apart from growth, the other numbers likewise provoke interest: a population of almost 6 million, about as large as Sweden, with unemployment at about 4% for Davao, lower than the country’s 5.3%.

These among other �igures indicate robust growth unaffacted by political noise in Metro Manila. Visible signs include continuous construction activities and a boom in inbound �lights from various Philippine and international destinations.

In the past year, it welcomed direct �lights from Doha, Hongkong and Fujian.

Many have asked why such is the case when its location in Mindanao is supposed to deter investment due to the perception of violence snd instability it evokes.

Three reasons come to mind.

For one, consistent high growth gives con�idence to investors that their investments can generate good returns. After all, the large number of employed individuals constitute a big market for consumer goods.

Second, the consistent implementation of rules

by the local government creates a more level playing �ield that gives con�idence to investors. This has attracted investments through the years,and created a business environment that has largely been a proactive partner of the city in keeping the business sector attractive to new entrants.

Visiting business groups note the strong relationship and synergy between the city government and business groups led by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This has encouraged many

of them to set up shop in the city.

Third, tough law enforcement has made Davao safe despite the stubborn perception of Mindanao as a violent, poor area of the country. The once virulent threat of insurgency has since abated, with few major rebel activities over the last two years.

These three factors are but some of the many reasons for a vibrant, constantly humming economy. In the end, a strong economy is boosted further with the warmth, passion and creativity of the people.

MUJAHID NAVARRA UNDERSTANDING ISLAM

CLEANLINESS IN ISLAM Cleanliness is next to godliness. This is perhaps one of the �irst quotes that we learned from school.

Legend has it that this was �irst recorded from a sermon by John Wesley in 1777 but its roots could be traced back to many different cultures way before modern Christianity.

1500 years ago, Prophet Muhammad said the same thing, ‘Cleanliness is part of faith.’ And just like the golden rule, this tenet that Islam shares with the rest of the world only proves that humans have been created by Allah to have natural inclinations towards the good and beautiful.

CLEANLINESS OF THE BODY Muslims are enjoined to perform acts of cleanliness in order for them to keep their bodies healthy.

Prophet Muhammad said, “Among the practices which are the characteristics of the natural disposition of human cleanliness is circumcision, shaving the pubic region, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short.”

Although these acts of cleanliness are all physical, Muslims do these in hopes of getting a reward from Allah by obeying the example of Prophet Muhammad.

Circumcision is a unique ritual that is done by Muslims for hygienic and religious reasons. Some other people or culture may do it also but it is never done for the sake of being part of one’s faith but for mere hygienic purposes. In fact, in the Philippines, we are the only Christian country in the whole world that regards circumcision as a tradition that could never be neglected. We even look at not being circumcised as taboo unlike in other Christian countries like Europe and the United States where it is perfectly �ine not to be circumcised. And the truth about circumcision in the Philippines is that it is a tradition that we have inherited from our Muslim ancestors.

Shaving the pubic region or the area around the private parts is also a Muslim religious tradition that is practiced by some other people for cosmetic purposes in order to wear a swimsuit and others. In the earlier times, human sanitation issues arose especially among sailors and others that they get infected with lice even in their pubic hairs. Doctors at that time prescribed the application of medicated powder to the affected areas when it could have been

easier to simply shave the pubic hairs altogether.

Clipping the nail, although mundane in most part of the world is in fact very healthy because germs could easily stay within the �ingernails and be transferred easily and could even be consumed.

Trimming the moustache is also another Muslim hygienic tradition as thick moustaches could get in the way of eating and contaminate the food that one is eating. The beard, although legislated for Muslim men to be left to grow does not interfere with eating such as the moustache.

Prophet Muhammad even instructed the Muslims further by setting a time limit that each act of puri�ication should be done every forty days. Friday, the day of congregation is good day to practice these traditions as it is easier to perform.

GENERAL CLEANLINESS Muslims are encouraged to keep their houses and living spaces clean.

Muslims are required that they should be kept clean at all times as the jinn or evil spirits that have the ability to harm humans are known to live and thrive in �ilthy places such as dumpsters and toilets. It is even

discouraged for Muslims to speak, recite the Quran or mention the name of Allah inside the toilets.

When using the toilets, Muslims are advised to be careful so that urine or feces do not come in contact to their skin and clothing that will negatively affect some of our major acts of worship.

PURIFICATION FOR ACTS OF WORSHIP Puri�ication is also a prerequisite in many different major acts of worship. In the �ive daily obligatory prayers for example, it is important that the Muslim’s body, clothing and place of worship are free from �ilth such as human and animal blood and excrements. Any evidence of the presence of such �ilth such as smell, color and texture shall require that such �ilth must be removed �irst and foremost before the performance of the prayers. The presence of �ilth may invalidate any act of worship that require puri�ication.

Muslims are required to keep themselves clean after they clean themselves. That is why it is prescribed for Muslims, male and female to urinate and defecate while sitting in order to protect themselves from any �ilth that

gets scattered. They are also advised to clean themselves thoroughly. Muslim women, during their menstrual periods are prohibited in performing the prayers and they must clean themselves properly after their menstruation.

INTERNAL PURIFICATION Perhaps the most unique way that Muslims understand puri�ication and cleanliness is that Muslims put great emphasis on internal or spiritual puri�ication. Muslims believe that physical purity is important but spiritual purity is even more important. Spiritual purity of the Muslims is the purity of their belief in the oneness of the one and only true God that is worthy of being worshipped – Allah.

Any form of belief that is harbored in the heart that is contrary to the oneness of God is considered as spiritual �ilth.

Polytheism or the worship of other gods other than Allah is the primary �ilth that will nullify the purity of one’s heart. Belief in sorcery, superstitions, omens, showing off, hypocrisy and ill-feelings against fellow Muslims and human beings such as envy and jealousy affect the purity of the human heart.

game.

"Nadala po kami sa gigil namin tapos sinabayan po ng kaba."

Their coach Jethra Diaz, on the other hand, said the girls could have won the gold medals if they were able to shrug off the errors earlier.

Almazan, a Davao Chong Hua High School student, expressed her gratitude to her school for fully supporting her campaign, and most especially her parents.

Montañez, likewise, thanked her family for believing in her.

The pair has never lost in the elimination round and winning their rivals in a dominant fashion.

The tandem of Harlene Claire Herbabuena and Janinah Panisales secured the bronze medal in the girls doubles 13 years old and below division of the same event.

PDBF RETURNS TO INTERNATIONAL PLAY After 8 years of conspicuous absence, the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) �inally returned to action in the 14th International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Nations Championships in Pattaya, Thailand last week.

Once considered as one of the top teams in world dragonboating, the PDBF were regarded as the darlings of the tournament in its 2007 and 2009 editions, taking down such heavyweights as China, Canada and Hungary.

They were the world’s record holders in the showcase sprint event of the Games - the men’s standard 200m - as well as the mixed standard 200m. Revered and treated as the rock stars of the decade, the squad was so popular that the team’s jerseys were always a priced souvenir for players and fans alike.

Alas, fate would play a cruel joke on this team. As much as they were idolized and emulated by other foreign squads, it would take their own coun-

trymen - not other foreign teams - to sink their glorious run. Back at home, sports politics would deal a fatal blow.

At that time, Peping Cojuangco had just been re-elected President of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) by the slimmest of margins. The PDBF had not voted for Peping, and it came as no surprise that upon his re-election, Peping would move to eliminate the PDBF and place dragonboating under the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation (PCKF).

Despite their splendid credentials as world champions, despite the fact that the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) is recognized as the world governing body in dragon boating, Peping would succeed in his devious plan to remove the PDBF’s status as a regular National Sports Association (NSA), scuttling the team’s chances for gold medals in the 2010 Asian Games and beyond.

In removing the PDBF, Peping would cite an International Olympic

Committee (IOC) directive to place dragon boating under Canoe Kayaking.

This is �lawed in so many ways. Chief among them is the fact that no other country in the world had received such a directive. For there was never any directive from the IOC to place dragon boating under Canoe Kayaking. Second, the International Canoe Federation (ICF) itself has admitted they are not the world governing body for dragon boating. The ICF, for that matter, had categorically stated its disinterest in the sport way back in the mid-2000.

Performance-wise, the ICF’s dragon boating competitions have always paled in comparison with that of the IDBF. To the canoe-kayak community, dragon boating is just an afterthought; hence not much value is given to their competitions. For that matter, the IDBF World Championships in Pattaya this year brought in more than 3 thousand participants from 30 countries, while the ICF-initiated World Dragon Boat

Championships in Gainesville, USA last year brought in less than 600 participants from only 11 countries. Thus the competition - and the talent pool - clearly favors the IDBF. When the PDBF lost its NSA status, and along with that the fund support for its programs for local and foreign activities, things became dif�icult for the Federation. In 2011, a smaller team would be sent to Tampa, Florida. Instead of defending their crown in the standard races, the team would have to content themselves by racing in the newly-introduced ‘small boat’ category, where a crew of only 10 paddlers would compete. Still, they managed to salvage a few golds. However, these achievements would slowly dwindle as well, as fund support for foreign forays would eventually dry up.

But the PDBF never reneged in its advocacy to propagate the sport in the far corners of the country. Despite the lack of support, the PDBF opened

up new frontiers in the far reaches of Visayas and Mindanao, and even produced a strong team of differently-abled paddlers from Cebu.

Last week, the PDBF �inally returned to the World Championships.

The newly-elected President, Tikboy Factolarin, had vowed he would try to bring back the PDBF to its former prominence. Noting that the Games would be hosted by nearby Thailand, Tikboy brought in a huge contingent to the Pattaya Games, to signal the country’s determination to return to the fray.

Thus the PDBF, after years of absence, returned to the world arena. And to the pleasant surprise of many, produced 4 golds, aside from other podium �inishes. The golds were courtesy of the PADS para-dragons, who dominated the newly-introduced paralympic side.

It has been a long, dif�icult journey back for the PDBF. But certainly, a rewarding and exhilarating one. Not bad after a long lay-off. Not bad indeed.
