resident Rodrigo Duterte reactivated the El Niño task force earlier this week in light of forecasts that reduced rainfall may persist until the end of August.

Memorandum Order No. 38, signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Tuesday but was released to the public only on Friday, reconvenes the Presidential Task Force to mitigate the impacts of El Niño.

"The recurrence of the El Niño phenomenon calls for the implementation of both short and long-term solutions to ensure food, water, and energy security; safeguard livelihoods, and improve the country’s disaster and climate resilience," the memorandum stated.

he decommissioning of 12,000 members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) armed wing will be from September 2019 to March 2020, with around 1,100 combatants and 900 weapons decommissioned on September 7 in ceremonies that will be attended by President Rodrigo Duterte, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez said.

Galvez told the conference on “Walking and Working Together for Healing and Reconciliation” at the Ateneo de Davao University last Wednesday that the 12,000 represents 30% of the 40,000 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) that will be decommissioned under Phase 2 of the fourphase process.

The September 7 decommissioning will be in the same venue where Phase 1 was held four years ago, at the gymnasium of the old provincial capitol in Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Under Phase 1, 20 crew-served weapons and 55 high-powered �irearms were turned over to the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) on June 16, 2015 and 145 BIAF members were also decommissioned that day in ceremonies witnessed by then President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. The Annex on Normalization of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), the peace agreement between government and the MILF signed in March 2014, provides under Phase 2 that 30% of the forces and weapons would be decommissioned when the Bangsamoro law is rati�ied.

The Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or Repbulic Act 11054 was rati�ied during a plebiscite on January 21 this year.

Elections on January 25, 2019 proclaimed RA 11054 rati�ied by majority of the people in the proposed core territory of the new autonomous political entity touted to be the “last chance” for peace in the decades old struggle of the Bangsamoro people to establish a government of the Moro, by the Moro and for the Moro, inclusive of the non-Moro settlers and Indigenous Peoples as provided by the law.

Galvez told MindaNews on Thursday that the decommissioning of the 12,000, representing 30% of the 40,000 BIAF members, would be until March 2020.

He said there will be eight decommissioning sites “and we expect to �inish (processing) our 12,000 combatants from September (2019) to March (2020).”

“Our benchmark is that we can decommission more or less 200 per day per site in series, not simultaneous,” he added.

On September 7, a total of 1,060 BIAF members and 920 �irearms will be decommissioned. Also to be formally decommissioned are 225 BIAF members who are undergoing training as members of the Joint Peace and Security Teams (JPST).

Galvez told the conference that the 225 will be “makakasama ng police, ng armed forces sa paghanap ng terrorists at the same time sila po security during decommissioning” (will join the police and armed forces in the search for ter-

rorists and at the same time they will provide security during the decommissioning).

The trainees’ basic military training started August 1 and will end on August 26.

Already listed for decommissioning on September 7 are 1,060 BIAF members plus 225 already training under the JPST or 1,285, and 920 �irearms.

Galvez told the conference that decommissioned combatants and their families “will be assisted in making the transition to becoming peaceful and productive civilians” and the ri�les they have been carrying for years would be replaced by ploughshares, �ishnets and other implements to earn sustainable incomes.

Reckoning 30% On January 18 this year, after the Peace Assembly where President Rodrigo Duterte campaigned for a “yes” vote to ratify RA 11054, MILF chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim told MindaNews they had “30,000 to 40,000” regular members of the BIAF that “will be subject for decommissioning.” He said they were “not necessarily all armed but all are under the of�icial roster of the BIAF.” Murad said the MILFowned weapons were only 6,000 to 7,000 and they were reckoning the 30% to be decommissioned after the rati�ication from this number. Thirty per cent of “6,000 to 7,000” is 1,800 to 2,100 weapons.

Ebrahim explained their three categories: 6,000 to 7,000 weapons owned by the MILF itself; but there are other weapons owned by individual members and they were conducting a survey on it; and weapons of sympathizers.

Four phases Phase 1 of the Normalization process is “from the signing of the Annex

on Normalization up to the completion of the veri�ication and validation conducted by the IDB.” The Annex was signed on January 25, 2014.

Phase 1 included the ceremonial turn over of 20 crew-served weapons and 55 high-powered �irearms in June 2015. Phase 1 also included starting the process of redeployment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from former con�lict areas and the submission of the report of the Independent Commission on Policing, among others.

It should also have established the National Agency Task Force for the Disbandment of the PAGs (private armed groups) and Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Commission.

These two bodies are still in the process of setting up.

Phase 2 is “from the completion of validation of MILF forces up to the rati�ication of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL)” which will then involve the decommissioning of 30% of MILF forces and weapons; Phase 3 is “from the rati�ication of (RA 11054) up to the establishment and operationalization of the police force for the Bangsamoro,” which will lead to the decommissioning of 35% more of MILF forces and weapons or a total of 65% by then.

Phase 4 is “from the operationalization of the police force for the Bangsamoro up to two months prior to the signing of the Exit Agreement, provided that the evaluation of the panels with the participation of the Third Party Monitoring Team and Facilitator that all the commitments of the parties, except the remaining stage of decommissioning, has been completed.”

Sotto: Discomfort over sharing restrooms must be considered

enate President Vicente Sotto III said on Friday the discomfort over the sharing of sex-separated public restrooms with transgender people must be considered in the discussion of having equal access to such social space.

In a text message to reporters, Sotto argued that access to public bathrooms must be based on biological sex.

"I am all for respecting rights. But how about the sensitivities of women who are uncomfortable with transgenders using women's restrooms; or straight men donning women's clothes," Sotto said.

"Restrooms are biology-based. Lesbians cannot stand in a male-only urinal.

The transgender bathroom controversy cropped up after Gretchen Diez, a transwoman, was barred from using the women's comfort room of a mall in Cubao, Quezon City and was even handcuffed and arrested by police personnel.

When asked for his position to put up a third restroom in commercial establishments for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community, Sotto said it may be possible but it would be dif�icult to make it ubiquitous.

Go, accompanied by actors Philip Salvador and Robin Padilla, met with the �ire victims in Purok Cherry, Kalye Putol, Barangay Poblacion and handed over �inancial aid and food items.

Daisy Gaviola, Kidapawan City social welfare and development deputy head, said four houses were destroyed by the mid-morning blaze while 17 others were damaged, affecting about 110 individuals.

Eyes completion by August next year

ndak-Indak sa Kadayawan 2019 contingents Sindac Anib Performing Ensemble of Bislig City, Sta. Ana National High School, and Catalunan Pequeno National High School emerged grand winners in the open category, champion circle category, and Davao City school-based category respectively.

Hailing from Bislig, Surigao del Sur, the Sindac Anib Performing Ensemble, dressed in a daring traditional Obu Manuvu costume, wowed the judges and the spectators with their colorful act.

The Bislig-based group also won the best music and best artistic design awards in the open category.

Sindac outperformed other contingents namely Elizalde National High School of Maco, Compostela Valley; Mati National Com-

prehensive High School, Lupon National Comp. High School of Davao Oriental, and Kablacan Integrated School of Sarangani Province.

The group’s movement director Mark Hingco, in an interview, said the win came as a great surprise given the fact that they had a limited time in rehearsing their presentation.

"Our production was not so vivid and talagang inspiration lang namin is our every day lives," he said.

He said the last time the

group joined the Indak-Indak was 12 years ago when they won fourth place.

"Indak Indak is the best festival we joined," Hingco added.

On the other hand, Sta. Ana Performing Arts Guild bagged the champion’s circle category crown after 10 years of chase. The group received a cash prize worth P1.2 million and also won the best music and best artistic design plums of the category.

"We didn't expect it but we already claimed it in our hearts kasi sobrang effort and malaki yung time namin to prepare," said Mary Ann Dela Cerna, Sta. Ana Performing Arts Guild artistic director.

The group outshined Mabini National High School-Special Program in

the Arts, and Sining Sayon Dawet Cultural Ensemble of Davao City National High School who placed second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Catalunan Pequeño National High School improved their fourth place �inish last year to clinching the Davao City school-based category title over Magallanes Elementary, Buhangin District Performing Arts Guild, Don Juan Dela Cruz Central Elementary School, and LapuLapu Elementary School.

The group received a prize of P1 million cash and a music award.

US ban on Huawei being largely ignored in SE Asia

T

rade tensions between the United States and China have sent a shiver across Southeast Asia, a region that depends heavily on both sides for its economic health, but when it comes to 5G, many countries in the region have shrugged off a US ban on Chinese telecommunications equipment.

Their responses to Washington's on Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co. vary in line with their different levels of economic development, their aims in deploying next-generation 5G networks, and the state of their political relations with the United States and China.

What has made it dif�icult for countries to ignore Huawei is not only its edge in the development of 5G but also the fact that it has in recent years cultivated strong and close business ties with many countries in Southeast Asia.

"It has to be acknowledged that Huawei is a very established telecommunications player with strong brand equity and substantial ties to the Southeast Asia region," said Mansur Khamitov, an assistant professor at the Nanyang Business School, part of Singapore's staterun Nanyang Technological University.

"When a dominant company like this which has grown into a technology giant attempts to penetrate a certain market, it is typically very hard for key business, government, and consumer stakeholders to resist such efforts, particularly if we talk about developing countries," he said.

"This is likely what's happening with several Southeast Asian countries still choosing Huawei in spite of the US warning of cybersecurity concerns and staying away from Huawei," he said.

The Philippines' Globe

Telecom Inc. last month launched Southeast Asia's �irst commercial 5G �ixed wireless internet service in the Philippines to provide high-speed home broadband to more households by using Huawei's equipment.

Its relationship with Huawei harks back to 2011 when it roped in the telecom giant as its technology partner for the implementation of a US$700 million network modernization program. In 2015, Globe signed a �ive-year contract with Huawei for the planning and design of a wireless broadband network, as well as the creation of a wireless innovation center.

In Malaysia, for example, Huawei was appointed an adviser to the government in developing the local talent pool for the info-communication technology (ICT) sector.

In 2016, it opened an ICT innovation hub and center of excellence to accelerate digital economy transformation in the country.

Despite Western countries' warnings about cybersecurity risks, the Huawei booth to promote its technology for safe cities at the Interpol conference in Singapore recently attracted a steady stream of Southeast Asian delegations.

"Their technology is nice. Technology comes �irst, they have intelligent cameras," said Daniel Dela Cruz, a consultant for the security and command center in the provincial government of Pangasinan in the Philippines.

"Our concern is disaster management and crime prevention. International concerns like the trade war between the United States and China are not really our concern," he said.

TRMH proposed 3rd tower eyed as mixed-use dev’t

he Royal Mandaya Hotel is planning to build a mixed-use third tower.

TRMH General Manager Benjamin Banzon told Edge Davao that the Escandor-owned hotel recently acquired the 250 square meter property beside the hotel which brings the entire area to 1,600 square meters where the third tower will be located.

“There is no con�irmation yet on the compositions of the proposed third tower but the board is considering to develop it as a mixed-use building. But we really cannot �inalize it yet how the tower would be developed, which is which?

Is it be another hotel or a condo? Or commercial?

Banzon said they are still doing in depth studies for the proposed 3rd tower.

He said they cannot determine yet how many �loors the tower will be having.

tobacco supplies has been part of the inventory of its commissary and catering supplies. An allegation that said alcohol and tobacco supplies has been used as commissary and catering supplies is just an allegation,” the CTA decision read.

“Not all importation of alcohol and tobacco product will automatically privilege petitioner from the payment of excise tax. Petitioner [PAL] has the burden to prove that the same were exclusively used and part of its commissary and catering supplies. Without any other evidence to substantiate that the imported tobacco and alcohol products were exclusively used for petitioner's transport and non-transport operations, the said pieces of evidence are not suf�icient to establish petitioner's compliance,” CTA argued further.

Likewise, the CTA said

that the testimony of its manager of In-�light Materials Purchasing Division citing the prices of imported tobacco and alcohol products with the local price list of Philippine Wine Merchants, Future Trade International, and as provided by Revenue Memorandum Circular 90201238 was not proof that the list of prices of Philippine Wine Merchants and Future Trade indeed represented the local market price for the subject goods in 2012.

“We cannot conclude that the petitioner's comparison of the price of its imported wines and liquor is deemed suf�icient as the price lists of two suppliers do not represent the local market price of the subject goods. Likewise, no valid comparison can be made between the prices of the imported goods and locally available goods,” CTA said.

Court of Tax Appeals denies PAL's P8.98-M tax refund bid

he Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) denied Philippine Airlines' (PAL's) P8.98 million tax-refund bid over imported goods due to lack of merit.

In a 24-page decision dated August 8, the CTA explained that, though the Supreme Court ruled in a previous that PAL was exempted from paying excise taxes on its imported wines, liquors and cigarettes, this exemption would only apply if PAL could prove that the imported items: were to be exclusively used in its �light and non-�light operations and other incidental activities; and the articles, materials or supplies should not be locally available in reasonable quantity, quality or price.

The upcoming tower will become part of the existing two towers of Mandaya Hotel with �irst tower of nine �loors and second tower of eight �loors.

The 181-room TRMH has also allocated P50 million to improve its facilities including the function halls, ballrooms, and the rooms.

Banzon said they will be adding a gym while the spa will be renovated in the same area. Currently, the pool area is undergoing renovation.

In 2017, TRMH, one of the oldest and biggest in the city, made an announcement to build a third tower with a three-level parking area.

During the announcement, Banzon said the third tower would be the place that will address one of the weaknesses of the hotel, which is the parking area because they will be putting three �loors depending on the requirements of having the numbers of rooms against the available slot for the parking.

“Things happened at the right time at the right place and we already started doing plans for the third tower,” he said.

Economist optimistic of 6% GDP in 2019

n economist of ING Bank Manila is hopeful that Philippine economic growth will hover about six percent this year despite the weak output in the �irst half, citing government efforts to boost the economy.

In a report, ING Bank Manila senior economist Nicholas Mapa noted recent Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announcement that utilization of notice of cash allocation (NCA), or the DBM-issued disbursement authority to cover government agencies’ cash requirements, has reached 93 percent of this year’s program as of end-July.

As of last July, NCA utilization amounted to PHP1.569 trillion, almost near the PHP1.688 trillion

that has been released.

DBM has said it released 89.1 percent or about PHP3.263 trillion of this year’s PHP3.662 trillion obligation program as of end-July.

“With the latest DBM release showing the government’s resolve to boost growth via expenditures, we can expect growth to �inish the year on a strong note,” Mapa said.

He also said government spending on maintenance and operations in the �irst half of the year rose nine percent yearon-year amid the delayed approval of this year’s PHP3.7-trillion national budget.

required by the city government, aside from violating the National Building Code and related City Zoning Ordinance.

The city government unit as the law implementor should now file the necessary court charges if only to teach the violators and other developers that it does not pay to violate the law.

Cortez, however, said that while the violators are aplenty involving mostly small developers, the so-called big players have faithfully complied with the law.

Well, maybe a city ordinance giving rewards and incentives to law-abiding deelopers is in order.

HELLO AND GOODBYE! “There comes a day in life, when you have said all that you ever wanted to say to someone.

But that someone is still waiting.

Waiting for words to come out.

And that’s when you know there is nothing much left. It is time to say goodbye.” – Anushka Bhartiya *** Every time you greet someone with “Hello,” the last word you’ll say is “Goodbye.” Remember the song popularized by the British group band, Beatles?

Perhaps “Goodbye” is one of the hardest things to utter. First used in 1575, it is actually an alteration of “God be with you.”

Actually, there are four ways of spelling the familiar parting expression: “goodbye,” “good-bye,” “goodby” and “good-by.” The Associated Press Stylebook prefers “goodbye” and expressly rejects “goodby.” The Chicago Manual of Style, however, favors the hyphenated version “good-bye” listing “goodbye” and “goodby” as variants.

In The Winter of Discontent, author John Steinbeck wrote: “Good-by is short and �inal, a word with teeth sharp to bite through the string that ties past to the future.” On the other hand, Charlotte Bronte in Jane Eyre penned: “Then you and I should bid good-bye for a little while?”

If there are so many songs written about love, there are also hundreds of songs which tackle the end of a relationship. Kenny Rogers, in A Love Song, crooned: “Why do people cry when they hear the word goodbye in a love song?”

Telling someone “goodbye” is hard and hurtful. As Rogers said in his song, “Tears are sure to fall…”

Breaking up a relationship is indeed a hard thing to do. When that happens, men usually drink as if there is no tomorrow. Women, on the other hand, cry silently or loudly. They generally have a hard time moving on.

Australian-born singer and actress Helen Reddy seemed to be speaking for most broken-hearted women when she sang: “I can’t say goodbye to you no matter how I tried. You’re such a part of me, without you, I will die. Deep in the heart of me, I know that you and I were meant to be together. I can’t tell you goodbye.”

Authors have written so many scenarios about goodbyes – some are memorable but most are tragic. Traci Chee, in The Speaker wrote: “He shook his head. ‘Goodbye, my dear. I’m afraid the next time we meet, we’ll be bitter enemies.’ She clasped his hand.

‘Then, I hope we never meet again.’ Then, with a wave of her hands, she vanished.”

Here’s another one – from Nicole Douglas in Afraid to Fall: “Now boarding Flight 266.

‘That’s you,’ Kyle whispered into her hair. On that note, she gave him one last squeeze and broke their embrace. She took off her glasses folded them up in her hand and looked him straight in the eyes. ‘Goodbye Kyle.’ A heartbreaking �inality rang in her tone.

‘Goodbye Jessie.’”

Here’s one more from City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare: “‘Simon,’ said a voice at his shoulder, and he turned to see Izzy, her face a pale smudge between dark hair and dark cloak, looking at him, her expression half-angry, half-sad. ‘I guess this is the part where we say goodbye?’”

Allow me to share the thought of Pascal Mercier (the author behind Night Train to Lisbon) about those goodbyes between lovers: “For that is the meaning of a farewell in the full, important sense of the word: that the two people, because they part, come to an understanding of how they have seen and experienced each other. What succeeded between them and what failed.

That takes fearlessness: you have to be able to endure the pain of

dissonance.

“It is also about acknowledging what was impossible,” he continued. “Parting is also something you do with yourself: to stand by yourself under the look of the other. The cowardice of a farewell resides in the trans�iguration: in the attempt to bathe what was in a golden light and deny the dark.

What you forfeit in that is nothing less than the acknowledgement of your self in those featured produced by darkness.”

If honesty is “such a lonely word,” then goodbye is a word most people detest. “I do not say goodbye,” wrote John Green in Will Grayson, Will Grayson. “I believe that’s one of the bullshitiest words ever invented. It’s not like you’re given the choice to say bad-bye, or awful-bye, or couldn’t care-less-about-you-bye.”

Of course, you have seen it.

And even before you have seen it, you have read it. I am referring to Peter Pan, a �ictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie. A free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can �ly and never grows up.

One of the popular statements in the book were these words: “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forget-

ting.”

Being forgotten is, to most people, unbearable. In The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks explains: “The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected. Maybe they always have been and will be. Maybe we’ve lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we’ve found each other. And maybe each time, we’ve been forced apart for the same reasons. That means that this goodbye is both a goodbye for the past ten thousand years and a prelude to what will come.”

Even if you abhor saying “goodbye,” time will come that you really have to say it. Claudia Quigg states, “Saying goodbye feels hard, for sure, but I am con�ident that it is a door through which we walk to bring us to another good chapter in our story together.”

Or, as Jamie McGuire wrote in Something Beautiful, “Sometimes good-bye is a second chance.

Clears your head. Anyway, missing someone makes you remember why you loved that person in the �irst place.”

The famous author Paulo Coehlo said it all: “If you’re brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello.” – ###

DAVAO’S VANISHING BOWLING ALLEYS At a time when the Philippines was known as home to four international champion keglers, Davaoeños took to duckpin and tenpin bowling with gusto. As a result, bowling lanes, excluding candlepin, sprouted in many urban locations and Davao was not spared from the euphoria.

The sport craze, in particular, was attributed to the enthusiasm the following icons created: Cebuana Lita dela Rosa was four-time world champion in tenpin bowling; she earned her �irst gold in the Bowling World Cup in Bogota, Columbia in 1978. Arianne Cerdeña, meanwhile, won for the country the �irst gold medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Bong Coo, four-time world tenpin titlist, is the �irst Filipina athlete in the Guinness World Records and one of the ‘greatest international bowlers of all-time.’ Rafael ‘Paeng’ Nepomuceno, in contrast, is four-time World Cup of Bowling winner and honored as ‘Athlete of the Millennium by Fédération Interna-

tionale des Quilleurs (FIQ), the governing body.

In September 2003, Liza del Rosario, Liza Clutario and Cecilia Yap made bowling history by setting two new world records in the women’s trios in the 15th World Tenpin Bowling Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The �irst automatic tenpin bowling alley in Davao City was the Astrobowl, built in the 1970s by Gonzalo Puyat & Sons, Inc. in Lanang, Davao City but closed shop less than a decade later due to lack of patrons given its remote location and higher than usual per-game fees.

Three similarly categorized bowling hubs surfaced in later years. These are the 8-lane tenpin bowling alley at Rancho Palos Verdes Country Club in Mandug, opened to the public in 2009; the 3B Entertainment Centrum at NCCC Mall, launched in 2003 but burned down on December 23, 2017; and the SM Bowling Center at SM Premier Lanang, launched on September 28, 2012.

Dominador Vergara owned two duckpin centers at any given time. He �irst opened Dover Mega Lanes 1 at the top of Gaisano (now Southmall) along Ilustre Street but later closed it down. He transferred it to a lot between Aldevinco Shopping Center and Avon Products along C.M. Recto Street but later also had to close shop. The other alley is Dover Mega Lanes 2 at corner Bonifacio and Gomez Street, which survives to this day.

Then there was Double R Bowling Lanes at Quimpo Blvd., Matina, owned by the Laingo family; the Insular Lanes at corner Emilio Jacinto and Ponce Streets; and Fair Lanes Bowling Center, the oldest surviving, at Florentino Torres Street.

The oldest bowling alley in town was on the ground �loor of the old CYO Gym, inside the Holy Cross of Davao College campus at Santa Ana area. Former world boxing champion Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde, as a young boy, used to work there as pin boy while learning the rudiments of boxing in the gym on the

other section of the sports center.

Elsewhere in the city, there were other bowling centers lost to time, namely: the ones at Agdao, just across the public market; beside the defunct Funeraria Villa along Monteverde Street; inside the old ‘Y’ Gym that is now home to a Chinese school; and at Bajada, just across where a four-star hotel now stands.

Outside the city, there is the Ultra Bowl in Panabo City, in the north.

Today, only three bowling alleys exist: the one at SM Lanang Premier, the Dover Mega Lanes at Bonifacio, and the iconic Fair Lanes at Torres Street.

A testament to the enduring interest Davao sports a�icionados display towards bowling are the numerous dynamic clubs, chie�ly af�iliated with national bodies, that have been organized. Three of these are Davao City Bowlers Association (DACIBA, 1977), Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (DATBA), and Metro Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (METBA, 2017).

Outside their comfort zone, the Davao bowlers have also shown exceptional skills to make it to the top. For instance, in 2014, 2-year-old Tessa Dianne A. Galendez, setting aside opposition from veteran bowlers, won the �irst-ever SM Millionaire’s Cup in Mandaluyong.

A Business Management graduate from Ateneo de Davao University, he cornered the P2-million top prize and a brand-new Chevrolet Sonic car in the country’s biggest and richest bowling tournament. In the 1st Cebu International Invitational Tenpin Bowling Championships 2019 held on June 16, 2019, she also emerged champion in singles ladies.

In September 2018, the six-member DATBA took home a total of 13 gold medals, seven silvers and a bronze from the Asia Paci�ic Masters Games 2018 tenpin bowling competition in Penang, Malaysia. The bowlers were James Young, Crystal Chavez, Tans Bernas, Manny Nierra, Al Langkuno and Absalon ‘Rommy’ Serrano Jr.

facility in a public hospital that houses desk representatives from the DOH, DSWD, Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Of�ice.

The government of�ices’ representatives attend to the needs of patients, through their relatives, such as �inancial assistance from DSWD, medicine from DOH, and documents from PhilHealth, without having to leave the hospital.

Early on, the local government unit (LGU) of Kidapawan also distributed food packs and other basic items -- hygiene kits, blankets, mats, and canned goods -- to the �ire victims.

LAST August 2, 2019, Jinyi Import & Export Trading Co. Inc. (JINYI), a heavy equipment, materials, and spare parts distributor in the Philippines, opened their newest office in Davao City. Previously located in Matina, Davao City, the office located in Panacan features a bigger show room and a new office building.

The official opening and ribbon-cutting was led by Mr. Jacky Fong, the General Manager and CEO of JINYI, Ms. Alice Fong, the Operations Manager of JINYI. Also cutting the ceremonial ribbon was Consul Li Lin of the Consulate General’s Office of China, Mr. Liu Jian Sen, Vice-President of XCMG International, Atty.

Held at Ayala Malls Abreeza on August 9, Habi Kadayawan 2019 is the third installment of the annual heritage design competition launched by the Kadayawan Festival Executive Committee and the Davao Fashion Design Council in 2017. Previously limited to fashion accessories and open only to Davao Region-based designers, this year, Habi Kadayawan widened its scope to feature a luxe apparel category and welcome applicants from all over Mindanao. Aspiring contestants were tasked to design pieces inspired by the 11 indigenous tribes of Davao, many of which trace their roots to other corners of Mindanao.

Over a hundred applicants tried their luck this year, from which 10 were announced as finalists in the Luxe Apparel category and five each competed in the Fashion Accessory Professional, Hobbyist, and Student categories. Out of the 25 finalists, 10 hailed from Davao City, with the rest coming from Pagadian City, Cagayan de Oro City, South Cotabato, Butuan City, Digos City, General Santos City, Isulan, Davao de Oro, Marawi City, Surigao del Sur, Mlang, and Kidapawan City.

Taking the top honors for Luxe Apparel were Mark Pabon of South Cotabato as Grand Winner, also named Philippine Airlines Colors of Kadayawan special awardee; Shine

Casiño of Cagayan de Oro City as first runner-up; and Jun Artajo of Davao City as second runner-up.

Pabon went home with P150,000 in cash, while Casiño and Artajo received P75,000 and P50,000, respectively.

For the Fashion Accessory categories, emerging as Grand Winners were Stephen Azarcon of Surigao del Sur (Student category), Dennis Almoroto of Davao City (Hobbyist category), and Patrick Gabutina of Cagayan de Oro City (Professional category). Each brought home a cash prize of P100,000.

PH Muaythai athletes eye four golds in SEA Games

T

he Muaythai Association of the Philippines (MAP) hopes to do well and contribute to the success of the country in the coming 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

By doing well, MAP means “winning at least four of the nine gold medals at stake in the biennial competition scheduled Nov. 30-Dec. 11.”

“There’s no doubt we will do well (in the SEA Games). Walang duda dyan na kaya natin (There is no doubt that we can deliver),”said MAP secretary-general Pearl Managuelod said, during the 35th “Usapang Sports”

presented by the Tabloids Organization Philippine Sports (TOPS) at the National Press Club in Intramuros, Manila on Thursday.

“Sigurado ako (I’m sure) we will have medals in all nine events in the SEA Games, pero sa gold hindi ko masasabi (but I’m not certain about the golds),” added Managuelod, who is taking a break in her Sports Psychology studies at the University of Ottawa in Canada.

Managuelod, however, did not reveal the names of the Muaythai athletes who will most likely win gold medals for the country for

Messi-less Barca vows to Athletic Bilbao, 1-0

arcelona lost its opening Spanish league match for the �irst time in a decade on Friday, falling at Athletic Bilbao, 1-0, as Antoine Griezmann couldn't make up for Lionel Messi's absence.

Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz scored from a spectacular overhead kick a minute after coming off the bench in the 88th minute, handing Barcelona the loss after 10 straight opening league wins.

Griezmann, Barcelona's biggest offseason signing, was held scoreless in his competitive debut after joining from rival Atlético Madrid for €120 million euros ($133 million). It was a lackluster performance for the France forward whose only signi�icant scoring chance came

with a header in the �inal minutes.

"The ball didn't go in, and in the end that's what matters the most," Griezmann said. "We have to keep working hard to improve and to rebound as soon as possible."

Griezmann didn't have Messi by his side because the Argentina star is nursing a right calf injury, and he couldn't count on Luis Suárez either after the Uruguay striker had to be replaced in the �irst half because of an apparent muscle injury at San Mamés Stadium.

Managuelod is also con�ident about the future of Muaythai in the country under the leadership of his father, retired police general Lucas Managuelod.

She claimed that a vibrant and strong program is in place in Muaythai since 2014.

“We are very strong, very aggressive in our grassroots development program. May (we have) regional championships, national championships.

When asked about the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia, Managuelod admitted the team did not perform well.

“In 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia, there were only �ive events and we were able to get only one bronze medal, but in other international events, we always won medals,” she said.

uated from the University of the Philippines, also takes pride in attracting more women to join Muaythai since 2014.

“Ang maganda kay (The good thing about) (PSC chairman Butch) Ramirez is he created PSI. Merong group of psychologists at nakikita kong natutulungan naman talaga ang mga athletes. Skill-wise, nandun na tayo. Ang kulang na lang yun sa mental part (There is a group of psychologists who really help the athletes. Skill-wise, we have it. What we are lacking is the mental part),” Managuelod said.

his was a week of wake-up calls for USA Basketball, some provided by unheralded G League players in practice and now more offered up by the Spanish national team.

The Americans learned from both.

Donovan Mitchell scored 13 points, Khris Middleton added 12 and the U.S. topped Spain 9081 on Friday night in a warmup exhibition in advance of the FIBA World Cup that starts in China on Aug. 31. The Americans shot 55 percent from the �ield, 58 percent from 3-point range and held a commanding 42-20 edge in rebounds. ''It was a good chance to jump in the fray and see what this is all about,'' U.S. coach Gregg Popovich said after his of�icial debut as Mike Krzyze-

wski's replacement with the national team. ''It was like a baptism for us. New group, players, coaches, all that sort of thing. It was a real experience.''

There was much he liked, such as the rebounding. There was plenty he didn't like, such as committing 23 turnovers that Spain turned into 27 points. And the score wasn't all that relevant to him, though it did extend USA Basketball's program-record winning streak to 77 games and counting.

That run goes back to the bronze medal game of the 2006 world championships, now called the World Cup, and has continued on through the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, the Olympic runs in 2008, 2012 and 2016 and the World Cup titles in 2010 and 2014.

Most of those 77 wins have been one-sided. Only nine have been by single digits, and Spain has been the opponent in four of those contests. ''It was good to see the level and the standard that they're going to set physically,'' said Spain veteran and Toronto center Marc Gasol, who led everybody with 19 points. ''It was good for some of the guys that haven't played against NBA type of athleticism. It was good to see.''

The U.S. led virtually the whole way, had its lead trimmed to eight on a 3-pointer by Spain's Sergio Llull with 4:10 left, and responded with an 8-0 run over the next minute to restore order quickly. Joe Harris made a 3 to start the �lurry, Derrick White got a runner from the lane to fall and Jayson Tatum's 3-pointer from near the

Alapag reiterates it's all business as SMB gets one at the expense of TNT

ittersweet is the feeling for Jimmy Alapag as he, now an assistant coach for San Miguel, bested his old squad TNT in six games of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals.

But everything stays on the court for him as he acknowledges that at the end of the day, it's all business.

"It doesn't matter who it is. My job is to help this team continue to win. It just so happened that this se-

ries happened to be against a team that I was with for the long time. There's a job to be done," he said.

This is Alapag's second championship as a part of Leo Austria's staff, but what made this series

more interesting was helping the Beermen �ind ways to be effective against some of his old teammates.

But even though Alapag deserves part of the credit for the success guys like Terrence Romeo, Chris

Ross and Alex Cabagnot had against the superb play of Jayson Castro throughout the series, the 2011 PBA MVP said that it won't change his treatment to his old peers in the KaTropa.
