rom a hard lockdown status, the city government of Davao has shifted to a selective lockdown in Barangay 23-C effective 12:00 noon of July 20, 2020 covering only the affected purok and households.

In a statement, the city government said it has decided to lower restriction in the said barangay after a series of Covid-19 RT-PCR tests were conducted from July 15 to July

17 across seven puroks in the area. The test results resulted to the recommendation that the more than two weeks enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) be downgraded to purok or household lockdowns, targeting only the actual locations of the positive cases.

resident Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law adjusting the school calendar amid the prevailing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11480 on Friday (July 17) but a copy of the law was released on Monday (July 20).

RA 11480 amends Section 3 of RA 7797 also known as “An act to lengthen the school calendar from 200 days to not more than 220 class days.”

The law allows the President, upon the recommendation of the Education Secretary, to set a different date for the start of the school year in the country in the event of a state of emergency or state of calamity. “…the deferred school opening shall apply to all basic education schools,

including foreign or international schools,” the law read.

Under the law, the Education Secretary will determine the end of the regular school year, taking into consideration the Christmas and summer vacation, and the particular circumstances of each region.

The Education Secretary may authorize the holding of Saturday classes for elementary and secondary levels for public and private schools.

The Department of Education (DepEd), in consultation with regular stakeholders, will issue the necessary rules and regulations for its effective implementation within 30 days after the effectivity of the act.

It seeks the detention of suspected terrorists for up to 24 days sans a warrant of arrest.

It also allows a 60day surveillance with an allowable 30-day extension that can be conducted by the police or the military against suspected terrorists.

The law also imposes a 12-year jail term on a person who voluntarily or knowingly joins a terrorist organization.

Andolong also said other Duterte contributions to the country’s security include the whole-of-nation approach in creating lasting peace, the National Defense Strategy which ensured the protection of the Filipino people and the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Part of this is the establishment of the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) and the implementation of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

The NTF ELCAC came into being after Duterte signed Executive Order 70 on December 4, 2018, which institutionalizes the whole-of-nation approach against communist insurgency.

While E-CLIP is the flagship program of the Duterte administration that seeks to effect social healing and national unity and provides social equity to former members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front and the Militia ng Bayan by devising a different modality of giving benefits and services to the former rebels, in order to reintegrate them into mainstream society.

avao City has opened an additional Covid-19 facility in response to the recent rise in cases.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Monday said the Dumoy Satellite Facility of Davao Doctor’s Hospital (DDH) is now accepting Covid-19 cases with 20 beds including two in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Mayor Sara said the opening of the said hospital will help address the increasing confirmed Covid-19 positive cases in Davao City.

“After several months of collaboration, we are proud to say, GenAmplify version 2, the country’s very own PT-PCR test kit, is finally ready for commercial use,” the DOH said in a statement.

DOH lauded the Manila Health Tek team for their “commitment to excellence and safety, as they worked closely with our independent laboratory expert panel

in addressing key issues of version 1 of GenAmplify.”

Earlier, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said the test kit passed the confirmatory testing conducted by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Committee on Laboratory Expert Panel.

Dela Peña added that the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development created the test kit.

“As with other medical products and devices, performance of the kit will be regularly monitored,” DOH said.

hen news broke out on Friday that KalooKan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David will serve as Acting President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) while its President, Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, is recuperating from a stroke, Davao City parishioners were the most surprised: there had been no announcement in the city that the Archbishop had fallen ill.

Msgr. Paul Cuison, the Archdiocese’s Vicar General, broke the silence on Saturday, in a statement posted on Facebook: Valles is now recuperating at the Bishop’s Residence after his confinement in a hospital from May 23 to July 6 or 44 days.

Cuison, in a post shared by the Davao Catholic Herald as the “official statement” of the Archdiocese, said he received a text message from a friend in Manila a day earlier, asking about Valles’ health condition.

“As a close aide of the Archbishop, I am happy to let you know that he is getting back to his normal self in an almost miraculous way, with only a slight problem of his physical movement which is also showing great improvement,” Cuison wrote.

He said Valles was admitted in a hospital which he did not name, evening of May 23 and was discharged last July 6.

“The prolonged days in the hospital was due to some complications like the hospital-acquired pneumonia. But he has longtime been declared by his physicians as stable. In fact, he had already celebrated a private mass on his 69th birthday last July 10. I am optimistic that it would just be a matter of days and he will be back to celebrate public masses with the faithful,” Cuison said.

He added that social media has been “flooded with prayers for healing and ex-

pression of support from all over” and that it is “heartwarming to know that there are so many people who are showing deep concern and sincere love to our dear Archbishop.”

Until November 30, 2021 Fr. Francis Lucas, President of the Catholic Media Network Corporation announced on Friday, according to a GMA News report, that Bishop David, the CBCP’s Vice President, will be Acting President while Valles is recuperating.

Valles was elected President of the CBCP in July 2017 for a two-year term effective December 1, 2017.

By tradition, the CBCP President is reelected for another two-year term. Valles’s term as President ends on November 30, 2021. As will David’s as Vice President.

David has been vocal about his criticisms of the bloody war on drugs of the Duterte administration and of late, the Anti-Terrorism Law and the denial by Congress of ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal.

Valles’ predecessor was also vocal. Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas who was at loggerheads with President Rodrigo Duterte, openly criticizing him for alleged extrajudicial killings in his anti-illegal drugs campaign and for his campaign to restore the death penalty.

Valles, on the other hand, has not issued public statements against President Duterte on the controversial anti-illegal drugs campaign and alleged extrajudicial killings or on the death penalty. Friends of Valles say he uses a “diplomatic approach.”

PALremindspassengersofint’l, domestic travel requirements F lag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Saturday reminded domestic and international passengers about the latest travel requirements applicable to their respective destinations, as well as at their points of origin.

In a Facebook post, PAL listed the new travel regulations although it noted that changes may arise from time to time.

Below are the travel requirements that took effect recently: Travel to Davao (Domestic Travel) Passengers traveling to Davao City are required to submit a negative COVID-19 RT-PCT test result, issued within 48 hours from date of departure, before they could be allowed to board their flight bound for Davao.

This new requirement from the Davao City local government takes effect on July 20, 2020.

Travel to Duba (International flights from the Philippines) Dubai authorities

now require travelers to obtain a COVID-19 negative certificate (PCR test results) no more than 96 hours before departure.

Presenting the COVID negative certificate is a prerequisite for boarding a flight bound for Dubai.

This new requirement is already in effect.

Travel to the Philippines (International flights from other countries) Only the following are allowed to travel to the Philippines at present: Filipino citizens, including their spouses and children who may be foreign citizens (If the foreign citizen spouse is traveling alone, proof of marriage must be presented) Foreign diplomats and officials of international organizations accredited to the Philippines Uniformed personnel for official business, especially those transporting medical supplies, laboratory specimens, related to COVID-19, and other

humanitarian assistance.

PAL noted that the Philippine government’s rules are expected to be revised on August 1, 2020 to allow some foreign citizens to enter under certain conditions.

Likewise, the airline said the Philippine government is implementing mandatory quarantine and testing procedures for all arriving passengers, such as: Upon arrival, all passengers will undergo a swab test (RT PCR COVID-19 test) to be performed by trained government personnel.

While awaiting test results, passengers must stay either in a government-designated mandatory quarantine facility or in an accredited quarantine hotel.

Payment for accommodation in a government-designated quarantine facility shall be shouldered by the traveler, except that the cost for Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) shall be shoul-

dered by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (for land-based OFWs) and by MARINA or the local manning agency (for sea-based OFWs).

Travelers whose test results are negative will be allowed to go home.

Travelers with positive test results will be transferred to a designated hospital for further medical management.

The airline reminded international travelers to check the government website of their respective destination country, as well as their country of departure, for the latest updates.

URC eyes production of pharma grade alcohol

C

onsumer snacks and beverage giant Universal Robina Corp (URC) on Monday said, it was eyeing the production of pharmaceutical grade rubbing alcohol to aid in the fight against the coronavirus.

URC seeks to amend its article of incorporation “to engage in the business of producing and manufacturing pharmaceutical grade alcohol and other similar products...” it said in a disclosure to the stock exchange, adding it will “leverage” its sugar distillery facilities for this purpose.

URC under its Sugar and Renewables group operates five mills and three refineries across the Philippines, with a combined milling capacity of 31,000 tons of sugar

cane, according to its website. Its distillery division meanwhile, produces “fuel-grade anhydrous ethanol” suitable for gasoline blending.

URC said its sales and operating income in the first quarter were steady from a year ago despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 crisis, but net income declined due to foreign exchange losses.

URC said in the first three months of the year, its net sales came in at P33.5 billion, while its operating income came in at P4 billion, both up slightly by 0.4 percent versus the same period last year.

Net income, meanwhile, declined 32 percent “due mainly to non-operating foreign exchange losses on balance sheet items,” the company said.

Twitter attack was work of young hacker pals: NYT

ackers involved in the high-profile hijacking of Twitter accounts earlier this week were young pals with no links to state or organized crime, The New York Times reported Friday.

The attack, which Twitter and federal police are investigating, started with a playful message between hackers on the platform Discord, a chat service popular with gamers, according to the Times.

The paper said it had interviewed four people who participated in the hacking, who shared logs and screenshots backing up their accounts of what happened.

“The interviews indicate that the attack was not the work of a single country like Russia or a sophisticated group of hackers,” the Times reported.

“Instead, it was done by a group of young people one of whom says he lives at home with his mother - who got to know one another because of their obsession with owning early or unusual screen names, particularly one letter or number, like @y or @6.”

The massive hack of high-profile users from Elon Musk to Joe Biden has raised questions about Twitter’s security as it serves as a megaphone for politicians ahead of November’s election.

“Based on what we know right now, we believe approximately 130 accounts were targeted by the attackers in some way as part of the incident,” Twitter said in a tweet.

“For a small subset of these accounts, the attackers were able to gain control of the accounts and then send Tweets from those accounts.”

Posts trying to dupe people into sending hackers the virtual currency bitcoin were tweeted by the official accounts of Apple, Uber, Kanye West, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and many others on Wednesday.

Twitter said it appeared to be a “coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.”

Original Gangster’ accounts Fraudulent posts, which were largely deleted, said people had 30 minutes to send $1,000 in cryptocurrency bitcoin, promising they would receive twice as much in return.

More than $100,000 worth of bitcoin was sent to email addresses mentioned in the tweets, according to Blockchain.com, which monitors crypto transactions.

The young hackers interviewed by the Times said a mysterious user who went by the name “Kirk” initiated the scheme with a message and was the one with access to Twitter accounts.

They contended they were only involved in commandeering lesser-known Twitter accounts, particularly to swipe coveted short handles such as an “@” sign and single letters or numbers that could easily be sold, according to the report.

The young hackers maintained they stopped serving as middlemen for “Kirk” when high-profile accounts became targets.

Some hackers are “obsessed” with hijacking “Original Gangster” social media accounts staked out in the services’ early days that have short profile names, according to Brian Krebs of Krebs on Security.

“Possession of these OG accounts confers a measure of status and perceived influence and wealth in SIM swapping circles, as such accounts can often fetch thousands of dollars when resold in the underground,” Krebs said in a post.

Hackers involved in the attack on Twitter advertised account names at an OGusers.com website, asking for payment in bitcoin, according to the Times report.

SEC declares cease and desist order vs. CROWD1 permanent T he Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has made permanent its order stopping CROWD1 Asia Pacific, Inc. from soliciting and accepting investments from the public under a scheme disguised as a digital marketing business.

In a resolution issued on July 2, the Commission denied the Motion to Lift Cease and Desist Order Ad Cautelam filed by CROWD1 for lack of merit and thereby declared the cease and desist order permanent.

“A careful review of the Motion to Lift will show that except for its general denials, CROWD1 failed to present any evidence in support of its claim that it is not engaged in the sale and/or offer for sale of securities in the form of investment contracts,” the resolution read.

The SEC issued a cease and desist order against CROWD1 last May 12 after finding that the entity has operated “a fraudulent investment scheme consisting of the sale and/or offer of inexistent securities in the form of investment contracts to the public.”

CROWD1 has solicited and accepted investments from the public by offering what it describes as educational packages for a minimum of P6,000 and as much as P240,000.

To entice the public to invest, CROWD1 has promised member-investors five different bonuses: streamline bonus, binary pairing bonus, fear of loss bonus, matching bonus, and residual bonus from games and gambling apps.

CROWD1 has likewise

touted a pairing incentive payable in euros to encourage member-investors to recruit new members.

Representing itself as a digital marketing business, CROWD1 has claimed that it generates income from online games and facilitates the generation by its members of residual income from its affiliate gaming companies such as AFFIGLO and MIGGSTER. The SEC ruled that CROWD1’s scheme involved the sale and/or offer of securities in the form of investment contracts and, thus, required a secondary license under Republic Act No. 8799, or The Securities Regulation Code (SRC).

The Commission also ruled that the act of CROWD1 of publishing and making presentations on its investment/ business scheme through its website, Facebook, YouTube and on-ground events, and inviting investors constituted a public offering as defined under Rule 3.1.17 of the 2015 IRR of the SRC. Section 8 of the SRC provides that securities shall not be sold or offered for sale or distribution within the Philippines, without a registration statement duly filed with and approved by the SEC. CROWD1 neither secured a secondary license to operate as a broker/ dealer, registered as issuer of mutual funds, exchange-traded funds or proprietary/ nonproprietary shares, nor registered any securities pursuant to the SRC. CROWD1 only registered as a corporation for

the primary purpose of engaging in business process outsourcing services.

The SEC emphasized that the certificate of incorporation granted to CROWD1 explicitly prohibited the corporation from soliciting, accepting or taking investments or placements from the public as well as from issuing investment contracts.

Accordingly, the Commission directed CROWD1 to cease and desist, under pain of contempt, from engaging in activities of selling and/or offering for sale securities in the form of investment contracts or other similar schemes without prior registration and permit to sell.

The SEC also ordered CROWD1 to cease from promoting its investment scheme in social media and other online platforms.

Furthermore, the Commission prohibited CROWD1 from transacting any business involving funds in its depository banks, and from transferring, disposing, or conveying in any manner all related assets for the benefit of the investors.

The cease and desist order covers the corporation’s operators, partners, directors, officers, salespersons, agents, representatives, promoters, and all persons, conduit entities and subsidiaries claiming and acting for and on its behalf.

In its Motion to Lift, CROWD1 argued its operations were limited to business processing, with affiliates marketing products and shares in the earnings of the organization. It also

argued that the educational packages it was selling to the public was allowed since its objective is to educate the affiliates of the organization on possible wealth to be gained from marketing products and services.

The SEC, however, sustained the evidence presented by the Enforcement and Investor Protection Department (EIPD) showing CROWD1, its officers, agents and representatives were soliciting investments by enticing people to avail of its educational packages and recruit more investors to receive commissions.

The Commission noted: “As correctly pointed out by the EIPD, people avail of the so-called educational packages for the purpose of securing for themselves the guaranteed high yields promised by CROWD1. Thus, we agree with the EIPD that the marketing of CROWD1’s investment products is actually a public sale and/or offering of securities in the form of investment contracts. We also agree with the EIPD that CROWD1 acts as a conduit of funds. CROWD1’s allegation that it is not authorized to market nor receive payments from investors is belied by the receipts it issued to the investors which is under the name of a corporation which owns 40% of CROWD1.”

The SEC also found CROWD1’s investment taking-activities ultra vires or beyond the authority it was granted, in violation of Section 44 of Republic Act No. 11232, or the Revised Corporation Code of the Philippines.

PRESIDENCY IS DESTINY Destiny is fate.

This is the shortest definition that usually a layman knows.

In the dictionary, destiny refers to “events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the untold future.”

Or “the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future.”

Destiny as the hidden power, - which I’d like to believe - is God. If we all agree in this premise, then God controls the future, does he not?

The recent emotional pronouncements that PRRD made in a speech were centered on the presidency.

As we already notice, the 2022 presidential elections are just a “mile’ away.

Narrating his difficult sailing in the rough political waters, the President in a fatherly sort of way, sent a discouraging message to Mayor Inday Sara who, various unconfirmed reports say, is interested to take a shot at the presidency should the opportunity beckons.

I don’t know – I am not sure – if Mayor Digong is merely floating a trial balloon and is anticipating a torrent of oohs and oops. Or an avalanche of fault-finding, critical diatribes from the political opposition.

Or expecting a sign or a movement from the majority coalition and a shifting of loyalties and alliances.

Or a quiet march of funding support from you know who.

Could be anything or anyone of the above, who knows.

Definitely, the circle of political thoughts – political operators, in fact - must be in a frenzy because there is this so-called pre-positioning among presidential wannabes.

I think I heard Mayor Sara say a while back that she will cross the bridge sometime in January 2021, virtually just 15 months to the date of the balloting.

The father has described his tenure as a great struggle. Although he stated his comments in rather mea-

sured and fairly normal tone, his facial expression and tenor reflected regrets over having thrown his hat into the 2016 presidential derby – and won, to his eternal surprise.

The presidency, if I may, is a thankless job.

As the Chief Executive – you are expected to do right – it is your solemn duty to steer the Ship of State to safe waters.

Anything short of it, your dissatisfied constituency gives you a passing 75 mark and dismisses your performance as “lackadaisical.”

These are the realities of political life in our country.

Filipinos seem not too eager to appreciate the difficulties of managing a nation peopled by undisciplined, highly polarized, bi-partisan citizens belonging to multi-ethnic tribes and groups.

The President’s “discouraging” advice not to “go for the presidency because it is a thankless, tiring, wearying job,” I find to be a sound one.

Who is the father who

would want his son or daughter to get mired in the political quicksand of helplessness when the convenience of living a simpler life becomes a better choice?

Who is the father who would want her son or daughter to sacrifice his/her personal and family life because he/she aspires to get hold of the most coveted position in the land?

Well, they say, different strokes for different folks.

To be sure, there are already clear movements from the respective camps of presidential aspirants.

Although only Sen. Manny Pacquiao has so far exposed his aspirations for a higher office since some time ago, the body languages of other “dreamers” are also showing, although tacitly.

The CoVid 19 pandemic actually put a damper in the political fever that should have increased to much hotter temperature as it does normally after the mid-term elections.

As this was being written, it is six months away

from January 2021 where the good Davao City lady mayor said she hoped to make up her mind.

Whispers and hushes that this and that political group or party may break away from the majority coalition are now surfacing because developments in the political terrain are making some personalities to feel the itch and stake a claim for a major piece of the presidential pie.

Time is of the essence. A wise leader knows that time is a precious commodity that has to be utilized properly.

You cannot recover lost time and with it – lost opportunity.

If you believe you can, you are already halfway there.

ESCARIO STREET, DAVAO CITY In prewar maps, Bonifacio Street, the road that links Legaspi Street (now Pelayo, Sr.) to Claveria Street (C.M. Recto), traversed by Bolton (Paciano Bangoy), Ponciano Reyes (Cay-etano Bangoy) and Anda (Feliciano Iñigo), was officially known as Escario Street.

Escario is honored in city streets in the same breath as Spanish conquerors Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro, Miguel López de Legazpi, Fernando Magallanes, and Jose Oyanguren y Cruz, and governor generals Simon de Anda y Salazar and Narciso Claveria y Zaldua.

In Spanish, writing names starts with the first name, then the father’s last name, and the mother’s maiden surname.

Conversely, in American tradition, the sequence is different, i.e., first name, second name or mother’s surname, and father’s family surname. Following Span-ish custom, Escario’s full name is written as Federico Garcia y Escario. Who was Escario?

A Spanish army officer,

Escario started his military career in the Philippines. He returned to Spain in 1872 to join the Third Carlist Civil War (1872-75) and was wounded in action in Puente la Reina, earning him the rank of lieutenant. He also took part in the battle of Lácar and Lorca 1875) and in the siege of Bilbao, Spain. Twenty-three years later, as a colonel, he was sent to Matanzas, Cuba, where he vigorously fought the Cuban rebels.

The Encyclopedia of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars (2009) described Es-cario’s military exploits in detail: “On June 22, 1898, he led a column of 3,752 Spanish soldiers from Manzanillo… to rein-force Santiago de Cuba, then under Assault by U.S. expeditionary forces. This march, under-taken under adverse conditions, covered 160 miles of extraordinary difficult terrain in 11 days.

En route, the column fought more than 40 skirmishes with Cuban insurgent forces and

suffered a 10 percent casualty rate from combat, disease and 68 soldiers wounded. Escario arrived with his men at Santiago on the night of July 2.

“Although Cuban insurgent Maj. Gen. Calixto Garcia y Iniguez had wanted to send 2,000 of his men to intercept the column, U.S. V Corps commander Maj. Gen. William R. Shafter had insisted that the insurgents maintain adequate strength in the Santiago area to protect the American flank while at the same time guarding the Manzanillo Road.

While Garcia or-dered Gen. Salvador Hernandez Rios to intercept Escario’s column, Garcia lacked the re-sources to do that and protect the American flank.

“In order to have prevented the Spanish reinforcement, he would have had to break con-tact with the American right flank. In any case, the insurgents had managed to delay the ar-rival of Escario’s column until after the Battle of San Juan Hill. Nonetheless, Shafter’s unwar-ranted

charges created some ill will and served to undermine U.S. confidence in the insurgent forces.”

Col. Escario’s military contingent in the Spanish-American War was the Regimiento de Infanteria “Isabel la Catolica” No. 75 (Infantry Regiment “Isabel la Catolica” Nr. 75). It con-sisted of two battalions and a staff detachment, with each battalion comprising of 83 officers and 2,004 men.

After the Cuban campaign, he was promoted to brigadier general.

Later, he served as commissioner and was instrumental in the negotiation that led to the signing of the Santiago de Cuba Agreement.

Repatriated to Spain after the conflict, he served as military governor of Alicante Province, in Spain, and was elected member of the Cortes, the Spanish parliament.

It’s unclear what year was Escario honored with a street in Davao. What is clear, though, is that the road that carried his name was origi-

nally an extension of Cortes Street, a long thoroughfare stretching from Quezon Blvd. to Legazpi Street. For some reason, this old street was cut into two and the section that runs parallel to Rizal Street was renamed as Bonifacio.

In the 1944 American military map, Bonifacio did not denote a street but referred to the littoral areas collectively known as Piapi. The boulevard that traversed this shoreline region was still known as Washington, commencing from the Magallanes-Claveria junction and ending at present-day J.P. Laurel Avenue.

At the time, Frank W. Carpenter Street, named after the American governor of the De-partment of Mindanao and Sulu (1913-20), was the original name of Tomas Monteverde Av-enue. It was only later that Carpenter Street, now Leon Ma. Garcia, Sr., was conferred on a short stretch commencing from Monteverde Avenue up to Lapulapu Street.

OS ANGELES -- Jon Rahm became the first Spaniard since Seve Ballesteros in 1989 to hold golf ’s world number one ranking, fending off a late challenge Sunday to win the US PGA Memorial tournament.

Rahm holed out an amazing 31-foot chip shot at the par-3 16th and, despite a two-stroke penalty that turned it from a birdie to a bogey, took a three-stroke victory over American Ryan Palmer that boosted him over Rory McIlroy atop the rankings.

“I don’t know how to describe it,” Rahm said. “It has been a goal since I was 13-, 14- years-old.”

Rahm was among the Spanish youth inspired by the feats of Ballesteros, a five-time major champion who died in 2011 at age 54 of brain cancer.

“Seve is a very special player to all of us, and to be second to him, it’s a true honor,” Rahm said. “Anytime I can join Seve at anything, it’s incredible.”

Rahm said the moment was difficult to comprehend in part because his thoughts

UDAPEST, Hungary -- Lewis Hamilton equalled one of Michael Schumacher’s many records on Sunday when he delivered a classic drive to become the first driver to complete a hat-trick of Hungarian Grand Prix victories.

The defending six-time champion, who won at the Hungaroring in 2018 and 2019, enlarged his overall total of Hungarian triumphs to eight, drawing level with Schumacher’s eight wins at the French Grand Prix, the most by any driver at a single race venue.

Driving with exemplary concentration and aplomb, Hamilton controlled a tactical race from lights to flag, making light of changing conditions to deliver his 86th win, five short of Schumacher’s record total of 91.

KO’D BY COVID Dabawenyo boxer Moralde tests positive for coronavirus: report

A

breakout stint at the ‘Bubble’ in Las Vegas turned into a nightmare for Davao City’s John Vincent Moralde.

The Dabawenyo prizefighter’s Top Rank bout with Alexis Del Bosque of Mexico at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last Friday (Thursday in the United States) was called off after he reportedly tested positive for the Covid-19.

Philboxing.com’s Teodoro Medina Reynoso reported Moralde’s admission in an online chat on Saturday night with The Manila Times and was published in a report on the boxing news website. The fighter nicknamed ‘Mulawin’ reportedly told Reynoso that he was asymptomatic.

The report said the 26-year-old prospect, who is now on quarantine in a Las Vegas hotel, was scheduled to fight in the same card that also saw another Filipino Mark John Yap disqualified for failing the weight limit.

It was a ring double whammy of sorts as the

two Pinoy fighters had their scheduled potentially career boosting bouts in the US cancelled for health and medical reasons. Yap failed to meet the limit for his featherweight bout against three time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga that would have headlined Top Rank on ESPN last Wednesday also in Las Vegas after tipping the scales at 136.7 lbs or nearly nine pounds over the contracted weight.

Yap who had fought as bantamweight just a couple of years ago blamed the short two weeks notice and a faulty personal weight scale for failing to meet the weight.

Moralde, a lightweight prospect with an impressive record of 23-3-0 with 13 KOs, was hoping to showcase a brilliant performance versus Del Bosque after coming off an impressive knockout triumph against Chilean Matias Arriagada late last year. Beating Bosque was seen to boost the former’s chances

for the world title.

“This is an important fight at this stage of my career. I don’t want to spoil the chance.

I want to bring home another win,” the Sanman Boxing Promotions standout said prior to the cancellation. “I have been grinding in the gym all this time.

Thanks to my team for giving me this opportunity. I am so lucky to book a fight in the midst of this (coronavirus disease 2019) crisis.”

Moralde was supposed to be the third Filipino from the Sanman stable to see closed door action.
