eading food manufacturer Universal Robina Corporation (URC) expanded its industry footprint with the inauguration of its new �lour mill in Km. 10 in Sasa, Davao City on Thursday, March 21.

URC spent over a billion for the development and pioneered the �irst and only �lour mill in Southern Mindanao and only the second URC �lour mill in the country.

"As one of the top �lour millers in the country, URC has chosen strategically to locate here when we opened in 1993 and be sole �lour

plant South Mindanao because of our foremost belief in the prospect for growth that will be spurred by developments in this region," JG Summit Holdings CEO Lance Gokongwei, in his speech, said.

The new �lour plant, established inside the sprawling 1.34-hectare complex

of URC plant, is �itted with state-of-the-art equipment designed and supplied by BUHLER using Swiss technology.

From wheat intake to bagged �lour palletizing the process is fully-automated, thus, it increases the new plant's milling capacity from 600 metric tons to 900 metric tons of high-quality �lour per day.

avao Oriental Gov. Nelson L. Dayanghirang reiterated his call for New Peope’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province to return to mainstream society after he paid a visit to a wounded rebel at the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center on Tuesday, March 19.

This was bared by Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesperson Major Ezra Balagtey, on Wednesday, March 20.

Balagtey said the wounded rebel is identi�ied as Randy (not his real name), a member of CPP-NPA Terrorist Group (CNTG), who was rescued by the troops of 28th Infantry Battalion (IB) in coordi-

nation with the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental on March 18.

epartment of National Defense (DND) Secretary Del�in Lorenzana on Tuesday said the Philippines is very lucky as it is the �irst country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to receive excess Japanese defense equipment.

He made this statement during the turnover and acceptance ceremony for the UH-IH "Huey" spare parts donated by the Japan Ministry of Defense, which was held at the Haribon

Hangar in Clark Air Base, Pampanga.

During the event, Lorenzana expressed the country's support to the recent amendment of the Japan Self Defence Force Act that would allow the Japanese government and its Ministry of Defense "the needed �lexibility and allowance" for the Japanese military to play a "greater and increased role" in maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Paci�ic Region.

Number of overseas voters up

T

he number of registered Filipino voters overseas for the upcoming polls has increased by more than 100 percent than the �igure six years ago.

Data obtained by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) showed that 1,822,115 million overseas Filipinos have been registered for the May 13 elections. Of this number, 794,286 are newly-registered.

The �igure marks an increase of more than 100 percent compared to the 737,759 registered voters in the 2013 mid-term elections, and at least 32.4 percent more compared to the 1,376,067 registered voters in 2016 when President Rodrigo R. Duterte won.

In the 2013 elections, the overseas voter turnout was pegged at 16.11 percent or a total of 118,823.

The highest voter turnout came from the Asia Pacific (ASPAC) with 51,361 in 2013, and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) with 162,261 in 2016.

The DFA-Overseas Voting Secretariat estimated a 30 percent to 50 percent -- or about 548,764 to 914,607 -- voter turnout in May. The biggest number of active registered voters are in the Middle East and Africa region with 887,744; followed by ASPAC with 401,390; the North and Latin American region with 345,415; and Europe with 187,624.

While the "decisive votes" are in the hands of those in the country, garnering support from overseas voters is equally important as Filipinos abroad could also in�luence their families back home, political analyst Ramon Casiple told PNA in an interview on Wednesday.

"If we're talking about their direct votes, it's not too signi�icant because we

are talking about a million.

It's good if the votes are solid (to one party) but we don't have a record yet of solid voting," Casiple said.

"But there is a second weather of in�luence -- it's their families. If they can organize themselves and campaign for their candidates among their families, and their families to the community -- it would have a big impact," he added.

But what could woo Filipinos overseas in voting candidates for the Congress? By voting abroad, Filipinos can encourage legislators to look into issues that affect them, including overseas workers' rights.

For Eduardo Lapira, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Las Vegas, Nevada, the US, Congress bets should align their envisioned laws to further protect Filipinos abroad.

"There should be proposals to strengthen punishment against illegal recruiters and sanction against agencies that refuse to protect the abused OFWs," he said.

Other proposals are for the conduct an annual survey in Embassies and Consulates General to monitor and rate elected of�icials, which for him, would show sincerity should they win the elections.

Jenne Martinez, a mother of two and an OFW in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the other hand, said on top of her list are candidates whose platform is focused on assisting their families home.

"As a mother working overseas, I would like to have a representative whose campaign platform promises to reach out to the children of OFWs, especially for those out-ofschool children," she said.

"This initiative may be simple, but I'm certain this would be a great help for Filipino parents working in another country," she added.

Sisterhood agreements bolster trade, tourism

isterhood agreements do not only strengthen the partnership between cities but these also open opportunities to showcase culture, products, and services that would bolster trade and tourism industries.

This was proven during the three-day Sister Cities Trade Fair and Exhibit held at SM Lanang from March 15 to 17, coinciding with the 82nd celebration of the Davao City’s founding anniversary.

The holding of the exhibit was Davao City’s way of helping its local and foreign sister cities promote their products and create awareness about their culture.

“This is an opportunity for Dabawenyos to make new friendships,” Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said.

Among those who joined the exhibit are Quezon City, Marikina City and San Juan City in Metro Manila, Municipality of Liloan in Cebu, Angeles City in Pampanga, Jinjiang City and Nanning City, China and Kitakyushu City, Japan.

ENERAL SANTOS CITY -- A suspect in the killing of a police of�icer in Koronadal City December last year was arrested in Barangay Apopong here Wednesday afternoon.

Police Brig. Gen. Eliseo Rasco, regional director of the Police Regional Of�ice (PRO)-12, on Thursday said suspect Jimboy Relativo, 36, was nabbed at around 1:38 p.m. in a raid at a house in the said village.

He said Relativo, who has a standing warrant of arrest for murder in Polomolok town in South Cotabato, was the No. 2 top most wanted person in the area.

“Incidentally, he was one of the suspects in the murder of Police Of�icer 1 (now patrolman) Diamond Muega,” Rasco said in a report released by PRO-12.

Muega, who was a warrant of�icer, was conducting a surveillance regarding the

presence of a wanted person in Barangay General Paulino Santos, Koronadal City last Dec. 5 when he was gunned down by suspected hired killers.

Rasco said the suspect, who was listed as a laborer and a resident of Salada subdivision, Barangay Cannery in Polomolok, was earlier spotted in Barangay Apopong by concerned residents.

He said elements from the Polomolok municipal police station led by Police/ Lt. Col. Samuel Cadungon, and the Regional Intelligence Unit-12 immediately conducted a surveillance, which led to Relativo’s eventual arrest.

The of�icial said Relativo was nabbed by virtue of an arrest warrant for murder issued by Judge Adelbert Santillan of the Regional Trial Court Branch 63 in Polomolok on Dec. 4, 2018.

MinDA endorses 7 agro ecozones in Mindanao

he Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has endorsed seven pilot Agro-Economic Zones (AEZs) in Mindanao to prospective local and foreign investors.

Joan Barrera, chief of the MinDA’s Development Division, said the selected pilot areas consisted of strategic production hubs and areas for possible economic activities.

“We are inviting in-

vestors to these pilot areas,” she said during Wednesday’s Habi at Kape forum at the Abreeza Mall here.

The seven piloted areas are the Agusan del Sur, Basilan, and Zambo Sibugay as Agro-Process-

ing Zone; Maguindanao as Agro-Economic Zone; Zamboanga del Norte as Agro-Aqua Ecozone; Lanao del Sur, Agri-Industrial and Tourism; and Zamboanga del Sur as Agro-Eco Industrial Park.

Barrera said a Malaysian investor is already doing a feasibility study in Lanao del Sur. Barrera said the establishment of economic activities in the AEZs will

be done through Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

AEZs aim to position Mindanao as a single and highly-integrated economy that is able to leverage and fully participate in economic groupings such as the BIMP-EAGA, ASEAN Economic Community and the rest of the global economic communities, she said. (PNA)

Eisma said that the company has leased a 29,400-square meter property to extend its existing 42,749-square meter facility at the Subic Bay Gateway Park (SBGP) Phase II. “The company plans to use half of the USD6-milllion expansion investment to build another factory building in two years,” she said.

Datian Subic initially invested USD10 million in 2017 for its �irst manufacturing facility at the Gateway Park.

As of February, this

year, the company already employs 3,698 workers.

Datian Subic Shoes, Inc. produces shoes under global brands like Keds, Converse, Sperry, and Vans for the American market, as well as Hugo Boss and Dr. Martens for the European market.

Its Subic factory integrates assembly lines for stitching, rubber compounding, outsoles molding, insoles and arches sponging, rubber gluing, as well as foxing operations.

Company of�icials said the existing factory produces an average of 350,000 pairs of shoes per month.

Eisma also said the SBMA expects more expansion projects among Subic business locators, following the current shift in production from China to other countries in Southeast Asia because of the ongoing trade war between China and the United States.

“The current tax incentives being offered by the SBMA to foreign manufacturing companies is another factor for this expansion surge,” she said.

Eisma pointed out that the expansion projects last year amounted to a whopping PHP25 billion in committed investments from existing business locators. (PNA)

UBIC BAY FREEPORT -- Datian Subic Shoes, Inc., the manufacturer of popular shoe brands like Vans and Keds, has committed some USD6 million to expand its operations in this Freeport.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman and administrator Wilma T. Eisma welcomed the development, noting that the company plans to hire an additional 1,500 employees.

“Although we have experienced a downturn in employment last year because of the layoffs at Hanjin shipyard, we believe that Subic can easily make a rebound because

“The emergence of a new China is creating a world where the lesser have a chance. And more

than a chance: cooperation for mutual bene�it instead of words,” he added.

On the two countries’ cooperation, Locsin and Wang vowed to deepen Philippines-China relations.

Although a lot of work remains to be done, there are “greater advantages” in the two nations’ collaboration across a wide range of areas, Locsin said.

“There is so much to look forward to and accomplish that will be of much greater value to both of us than those differences can ever be to each one,” he noted.

Locsin also assured the Chinese of�icial that Manila will look after the Chinese people in the Philippines.

“You have our assurance that the Philippines will look out for your people in my country as I have seen China look out for our people in yours,” said Locsin, who is in Beijing for his �irst of�icial visit to China.

Prior to his presser with Wang, he met with Vice President Wang Qishan, a stalwart of the Chinese Communist Party, who reaf�irmed China’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with Manila.

With China ODA, gov’t to save P4.2B on Kaliwa Dam project

he Philippine government will save as much as PHP4.2 billion in the construction of Kaliwa Dam with the help of an of�icial development assistance (ODA) loan from China compared to a private sector �inancing.

This was pointed out

by Department of Finance (DOF) Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Tony Lambino in a brie�ing with journalists Wednesday.

He explained that the construction of the Kaliwa Dam has been a government proposal since 1970s but it somehow never materialized until the NEDA Board approved the New Centennial Water Source-Kaliwa Dam Project on May 29, 2014.

He said there have been several proposals on how to implement it and these included an unsolicited PPP (public-private partnership), which were thumbed down by authorities, noting that under the BOT Law projects included in the government’s priority projects shall not be eligible for acceptance

as unsolicited proposal unless it involves a new concept or technology.

He noted that a private entity, Global Utility Development Corporation (GUDC), offered to implement the project through unsolicited PPP but this is only for the Kaliwa Intake Weir, which is only a portion of the whole project.

He said “a weir would have made the project incomplete and unable to address the long term needs and the water shortage problems we will continue to face into the future”.

Thus, in one of the meetings of the Investment Coordination Committee (ICC), which consists of the Secretary of Finance, the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director General, and the Executive Secretary among others, the Committee directed of�icials of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to undertake the project using the agency’s funds.

Rescued NPA rebel grateful to gov’t

AVAO ORIENTAL – A member of the Communist New People’s Army who has been rescued by government troops following an encounter on Sunday has expressed his gratitude to the government for saving his life after being abandoned by his comrades.

28-year-old Randy (not his real name) sustained a gunshot wound on his left knee during the armed encounter between his group and government troops who were conducting Focused Military Operations at the boundaries of Lupon, Davao Oriental and vicinity of Sitio Washington, Las Arenas in Pantukan town of the neighboring Compostela Valley Province.

Not being able to move and keep up with his squad because of his wounds, Randy said his comrades took his M-16 ri�le with them before leaving him then scurrying in the forest to escape. “Left alone and hopeless, I hid in the forest for fear that soldiers will �ind me,” he recalled.

Randy was eventually found the day after by soldiers of the 28th Infantry Battalion

who were scouring the forests in search for items to be recovered.

Hungry, weak, and seriously bleeding, Randy was desperate to get help and was left with no choice but to surrender.

HUMANITARIAN ACT

Despite being identi�ied as the enemy, Randy was not harmed by the government soldiers. Instead, he received a kind of treatment and care he never imagined he would get.

Troops immediately gave him �irst aid treatment before transporting him to safety. He was later given proper treatment and medical attention at the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center (DOMPC) in the City of Mati. “I would probably be dead by now if not for the military troops who found me,” Randy said teary-eyed.

“I was treated very well. They fed me and gave me medicine. The soldiers never hurt me.

Instead they comforted and assured me that I will be �ine,” he added.

No less than Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang overseen Randy’s safe transport and medical

care as he personally visited him at the hospital facility. He assured that the Provincial Government will take care of his hospitalization and has also committed to facilitate his processing and turn-over to the proper authorities.

“He may not be a resident of Davao Oriental, but he is a Filipino and it is our duty to help our fellow Filipino,” said the Governor, adding that “we are helping him because it is the right thing to do.

It is the most humane thing that we can do.”

DECEPTION OF COMMUNISM

Having been in and out of the Communist movement for six years, Randy was swayed to join the movement banking on the promise of a host of bene�its they offered such as livelihood and cash assistance. “But none of those promises ever came true,” said Randy.

“What’s even more disheartening was when they abandoned me that day. They saw me bleeding and crawling, but they just left me there to die. What they say about our bond as brothers is absolutely not true,” he said.

GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE 28th Infantry Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Miguel Ramon said the government troops’ rescue of an enemy is a clear demonstration of the government and the military’s genuine intent for peace.

“The convergence of the local government, the military, police, and other agencies involved also demonstrates that the President’s Executive Order 70 also known as the ‘Whole of Nation Approach to End Insurgency’ is working here,” he said, adding that this is the best way to counter insurgency rather than running after them in offensives.

Tropical depression Chedeng, came and literally did not make a dent. Thanks to the coordination of disaster management agencies from the national level to the local government units. Curiously, it was the fifth time PAGASA used the storm name Chedeng. It also previously used the same name in 2003,2007, 2011 and 2015.

Dabawenyos survived Chedeng chiefly because the region was prepared. Nearly 1,000 families were evacuated and 19 barangays were affected. A bridge in Tarragona, Davao Oriental was damaged by overflowing river. Other than that, the situation was well managed.

Davao City and nearby provinces came through with timely advisories and warnings and the suspension of classes averted adverse effects. Davao City used a plug-in-the-hole free bus transport system in place during the height of the storm in anticipation of the

In Davao del Norte, the use of technology and digital media worked wonders in preventing casualties and heavy damage. Its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) tapped technology-based early warning system in anticipation of flooding. The system was linked to PDRRMO’s municipal and barangay counterparts and other partners. The provincial disaster management office issued timely release of information to the public regarding water levels in major rivers monitored through real-time flood monitoring cameras and radio communication.

They also alerted the people on river water levels by using the social media platforms, mobile phones and computer text-blast system.

Timely evacuation in areas heavily affected by Chedeng like Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental likewise prevented loss of lives.

Indeed, there is nothing like being ahead all the time.

MUJAHID NAVARRA UNDERSTANDING ISLAM

THE NZ TERROR ATTACK: 1 WEEK AFTER New Zealand (NZ) is the second country with the lowest crime rate only next to Iceland.

The deadly terrorist attack on March 15, 2019, Friday surprised everyone. The attacks happened during the time of the Friday Sermons which is the Muslim congregation day equivalent to the Christian Sunday.

With 50 dead and 50 injured, the Christchurch mosque shootings are one of the bloodiest in New Zealand’s history.

The New Zealand government who showed sincere solidarity with the whole world against islamophobia immediately called the attacker a terrorist, unlike the others who were simply called as gunman or lone wolves. The Christchurch terrorist, who may have acted alone, certainly had some backing from like-minded individuals who influenced him to commit the crimes just like how ISIS sympathizers were motivated to commit terror acts around the world making him affiliated to lurking global terror network that targets Muslims. US President Donald Trump again is in the headlines as the most likely influencer due to his relentless Anti-Muslim rhetoric that people point out as one of the catalysts for the global rise of Islamophobia. In this column, the Christchurch terrorist shall be un-

named in accordance with the NZ Prime Minister’s policy of not fueling further notoriety for this criminal.

The attack killed 50 people: 42 at the Al Noor Mosque, seven at the Linwood Islamic Centre, and one who died in Christchurch Hospital. The ages of those killed ranged from 2 to 71. Fifty people have been reported injured with many of them in critical condition.

The Christchurch terrorist live-streamed the first 17 minutes of his attack. Facebook immediately took the video down within minutes of being notified but copies of it have been leaked into different video sharing sites. The New Zealand Office of Film and Literature Classification quickly classified the video as "objectionable", making it a criminal offense in the country to distribute, copy, or exhibit the video, with potential penalties.

During the assault one of the songs that he listened to is the the nationalist Serb song which glorifies Serb political leader Rodovan Karadzic who is now in prison for war crimes against Muslims in 1992-1995, in a series of events collectively known as the Yugoslavia wars.

Scribbled around his weapons are inscriptions of names of fellow criminals from around the world and some historical events, places, and

dates where Muslims have been defeated in battle. These have been called promptly as white supremacist symbols – it couldn’t be anything else.

The largest inscription that could be easily read says, Tours 732 refers to the major Muslim loss in France that halts their European expansion permanently. This victory was led by Charles Martel, whose name is also inscribed.

The Christchurch terrorist divulged in his manifesto titled, ‘The Great Replacement’, that the attack has been planned for two years while targets have been selected only three months earlier. The manifesto was described as replete with anti-immigrant and white supremacist rhetoric that calls the lawful immigrants as invaders. He was also quoted to have been inspired by the ISIS attacks in Europe which make him feel entitled to exact revenge on innocent Muslims too. This is a crusade-inspired terrorist who still think like we are in the middle ages.

The Christchurch terrorist immediately surrendered to the police after firing upon worshippers in the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Center about 5 kilometers away.

He surrendered with almost no resistance alluding to his wish to be imprisoned in a country where there is no death penalty

in order to preach his doctrine of hate in the NZ prisons where he may be able to recruit more people into subscribing to his ideologies which may not be most unlikely as Islamophobia is a common sentiment.

One such person who displayed the most insensitive remark and lack of respect even to the dead is Australian senator Fraser Anning who blamed the Muslims for their getting killed and calls Islam as a religion of violence that is being led by a blood-thirsty prophet.

While being interviewed on TV, Senator Anning head was hit by an egg in the head by William Connolly who does not agree with the racist senator.

When presented at the Christchurch District Court the next day, the Christchurch terrorist faced the media with a remorseless face and an inverted OK gesture which is a known white supremacist gesture.

To summarize, this is a man who bathed himself with hate, suspicion, grandiosity and chauvinism. The Christchurch terrorist was a lazy man who could not find good jobs and was blaming the hard-working Muslim immigrants for having a good life that he failed to have. Violence is the only way he found meaning in life.

This event polarized people around the world between

those who hate Muslims and those who are reasonable enough to believe that terrorism is never a Muslim monopoly.

Mosques around the world including some in the US received added protection from law enforcement agencies in response to possible attacks inspired by the NZ terror attack. Shortly after the event, incidents of attacks on mosques and Muslims were reported in the UK and some other parts of the by people who may have been emboldened by the Christchurch terrorist. It is also feared that the NZ attack is only the first of its kind.

In the end, after the dark Friday, we see a reversal of events. We see people gathering around Muslims and showing sympathy not only to the victims but the Muslims around the world most of all. Vigilance against Islamophobia and hate speech has heightened. A few days after the incident 350 people in NZ embraced Islam and a positive view about Islam is fostered as people become curious about what Islam is.

One of the factors to this is the statement of one of the NZ terror attack victim, Farid Ahmad, who lost his wife in the shooting. He says that he forgives the man who murdered his wife and he harbors no hatred for him.

PROBLEMS IN GOVERNANCE A MATTER OF ATTITUDE As most life coaches and motivational speakers will assert, problems in life as well as in all aspects of living are a matter of attitude.

How a person views himself standing out in the sea of humanity portrays how he will conduct his journey in life.

Let’s face it.

Success is NOT an accident, right?

No one plans to become a mediocre and end up a loser.

That is why, based on this norm, I say that problems in governance are not that difficult – and insurmountable. It is all in the mind.

Look at it this way.

Filipinos would not have realized how deep in the rut we were already in regarding the illegal drugs situation had not Digong launched his anti-drug campaign on his very first day in office.

I tell you, the newly-elected Chief Executive has his own inimitable way of showing his

POSITIVE mindset.

This is his character, a built-in mindset that draws inspiration from his 22 years of practical and hands-on experience as the former mayor of Davao City, once the notorious haven of criminals and lawless elements.

The obstructionist political opposition – already in terrible disarray – had found it convenient to resort to fault-finding. Aimed principally at preventing the President from succeeding – they took the negative stance to preempt whatever could be a herculean triumph for Duterte.

Anytime POSITIVE meets NEGATIVE, the former will always emerge winner.

As PRRD continues to teach and educate the Filipino citizenry, I am reminded of this quote from Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget who wrote: “The principal goal of education… should be creating men and women who are capable of

doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done.”

Whatever his political detractors say, the Duterte “crush the drug movement” has achieved a monumental victory. Thus, you can see how the continuing favorable opinion surveys show the public’s popular support for PRRD’s governance style.

Without really trying, PRRD has educated us all, hasn’t he?

Everyone from all walks of life is giving this incumbent administration a thumbs up.

The tough task of transforming this nation of 110 million of impassive and somewhat inveterate, hardheaded citizens was the greatest challenge the President had to face and surmount.

It is important to note that the Chie Executive has made some difficult and unpopular decisions that his predecessors might have not doing

during their respective terms.

How nice – or complementary - it would be if all the Cabinet secretaries, chiefs of bureaus and agencies, heads of commissions, administrators and the bureaucracy down the line think the same way Pres. Duterte thinks, even at the risk of them being called clones.

Historically, it cannot be said that our ranks of national leaders are lacking in quality and integrity. Our heroes - Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Antonio Luna, Gregorio del Pilar, Emilio Aguinaldo, MH Del Pilar and other notable patriots were dynamic revolutionaries who possessed positive mindsets that were handed down to the next generation of nationalists in the likes of Quezon, Recto, Laurel, Osmena, Roxas, Tanada, et al.

But the question arises: Did we go wrong? Where did we go wrong?

Today, while the Middle

East situation continues to heat up and threatens to blow up into a third world war, we have ignored and given that a shrug because our own domestic struggles are far more important to focus on.

Yes, why cannot we just think alike?

In his last SOTU (State of the Union) address, US Pres.

Donald Trump said: “We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future.

We must choose between greatness or gridlock, results or resistance, vision or vengeance, incredible progress or pointless destruction.”

Can Filipinos even approximate this exhortation?

A matter of attitude, really.

PCSUPT Jose Chiquito M Malayo said that a total of six (6) female cadets composed the Top 10 graduating 201 cadets. A total 47 female cadets of the total cadets of the PNPA SANSIKLAB (SANdigan ng mamayan na may SIgasig na itaguyod and Kapayapaan at ipagLAban and Bayan) Class of 2019 will graduate on March 19, 2019.

She graduated BS Psychology from the UP Cebu then joined the PNPA cadetship program to follow her dreams.

THE ART OF THE CRAFT

IT was a couple years back when I had my first taste of artisanal craft beer and quite frankly, I was hooked on first gulp.

I admit that I am more of a wine and spirit guy but that initial taste of crisp lager which paired perfectly with food broadened my world to the kind of drinks I can pair with food or just enjoy on its own.

Recently, The Mindanao Butchers & Company was the venue for a craft beer appreciation night featuring the beers of Engkanto Brewery and curated by its founder Ian Paradies.

A true-blue Cebuano, Ian shared his early love for beer while growing up in Cebu. While living in Boston and San Francisco, he realised his passion for beer and the opportunity presented by the thriving craft beer culture. “We Filipinos love our beers and the opportunity to create well-made artisanal beers presented itself which is how Engkanto Brewery was formed” said Ian. “The concept behind Engkanto was that the word brings

back forgotten Philippine folklore into the daily lives of the modern Filipino. Growing up, we hear stories of spirits and supernatural beings like Maria Makiling, the Kapre, the Sirena, the Diwente and of potions, spells and elixirs” Ian added.

There were three different craft beers that were made available for tasting at the event.

ASUS PH LAUNCHES ITS FIRST EVER NATIONWIDE MOBILE PHOTO MARATHON ASUS ZenFone’s renowned PixelMaster Master Class, an 8-month campaign that aims to develop the photography skills of budding ZenFone mobile photographers with help from esteemed names in the industry, is coming to a close. What makes a good wedding photographer/videographer?

Jiggie, Ryan, and Jay agreed that the success of their work is defined by the feedback from their clients.

“One the best compliment I got is from the mother of the groom saying that I’ve captured the essence of eternal love through my lens.” Jiggie explained. Ryan and Jay added that getting referrals and turning clients into friends is a testament of good work.

Being able to capture rare and sacred moments and making them look good is not enough for these three. “More than producing memorable photos, I want to make them feel good about themselves, that’s why I see to it that the couple and their family members are relaxed when I shoot them.” Ryan said. “Each wedding is unique and our work as videographers is to translate the different personalities of a couple and make it into a one of a kind ceremony through the SDEs that we produce.” Jay added.

What are some of the important features and specifications a camera for wedding photography should require?

Jiggie Alejandrino who specializes in lighting shares, “For me, the dynamic range system makes everything easier. This feature allows us to capture improved subject visibility even in high contrast lighting or dim lit areas

in the location. The Sony cameras that I use focus more on the image quality and dynamic range with the 42.2-megapixel full-frame sensor transforming the scene and making it into something different.”

Sony cameras are developed with full-frame sensors that produce better image quality at high ISO sensitivity. “From my experience, I believe that besides mastering the gear, behind a great photograph is the power features of the camera itself.” he added.

Another important feature when shooting weddings, considering the constant change of locations, is the weight and the size of the camera. Ryan Ortega who specializes in destination weddings claims that the Sony camera’s portability, compactness, and the full frame mirrorless camera design works perfectly for his specialty. Ryan said, “It is

now possible to shoot destination weddings by myself, without compromising on the quality of the images that are being produced.”

Tobacco goes beyond smoking

hen world explorer Christopher Columbus returned to Spain after discovering America in 1492, one of the things he brought back with him was tobacco. Five hundred years later, smoking has become a worldwide phenomenon, and hundreds of millions of people are now using tobacco in various forms.

History records showed tobacco was introduced in the Philippines in the late 16th century during the era of Spanish colonization when the Augustinians brought cigar tobacco seeds to the colony for cultivation. In 1686, William Dampier visited Mindanao and observed that smoking was already a widespread custom.

These days, tobacco use is likened to “slow-motion suicide,” to quote the words of Dr. Halfdan Mahler, former director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations. “Smoking is hazardous to your health,” the US Surgeon General said.

Tobacco, known in the science world as Nicotiana tabacum, “has always had negative press,” Danny Ebelhar, an American tobacco farmer from Owensboro, was quoted as saying

But there’s more to tobacco than just for smoking. In fact, Ebelhar grows tobacco for Kentucky BioProcessing Llc. not for making cigarettes but to be used for starch and research other than for pharmaceuticals.

In the Philippines, some farmers are �inding tobacco as an ally against pests. Ask 35-year-old Serapion Madidis of Calinan, Davao City. He has been growing corn for almost a decade now. Like other crops he used to plant before, corn is susceptible to attacks of insects and diseases.

One of the problems he encountered lately is the common stalk borer. Corn plants from 2 to 24 inches tall may be attacked. Damage to corn caused by the pest is characterized by wilting and/or dying of the upper leaves or by ragged irregular holes chewed in the newly unrolled leaves.

The characteristic “dead heart,” experts say, is caused by the insect boring into the stalk at the soil level and tunneling upward. The insect may also climb up the plant and tunnel downward into the whorl, creating the ragged holes. A considerable amount of sawdust-like borer feces can be seen in the whorl or coming out of the borer’s entry hole in the stalk.

In the past, he used chemical pesticides to destroy the insects that attacked his crops. But after attending two-day training on

organic agriculture at the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC) in Kinuskusan, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, he found out that there’s a better way of getting rid of the insects.

“One of the best ways to eradicate the insects is by using tobacco spray,” Madidis said. Here’s what he did. He boiled 250 grams of dried tobacco leaves and stems in four liters of water for 20 minutes. After that, he allowed the water to cool and then �iltered it through layered cotton cloth. He added four more liters of water to the solution and 50 grams of bar soap. He then poured the solution into corn funnels to kill stalk borer.

According to MBRLC technicians, the tobacco solution can also be applied as a soil drench around plants to kill cutworms.

It can be used to spray beans to prevent rust disease and also to control aphids, beetles, cabbage worms, caterpillars, grain weevils, leaf miners, mites, stem borers and thrips.

The tobacco solution, MBRLC technicians claimed, is especially effective against biting or sucking insects. When applied weekly with a brush, it is effective against ticks and �leas in cattle.

The Florida-based Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization (ECHO) has developed another kind of tobacco spray. One kilogram of crushed or bruised tobacco stalks and leaves are soaked in 15 liters of water for 24 hours. The solution is then �iltered; and three to �ive tablespoon of liquid soap is added. It is sprayed immediately to plants.

“Use tobacco sprays in the evening to allow them to work in the night,” the ECHO reminds.

“And in general, do not spray potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant or any plant in the Solanaceae family in order to prevent the spread of viruses.”

Another warning: “Do not let people or animals drink the solution, and when spraying, wear protective clothing – especially a mask, or apply solutions with a watering can only. Do not eat vegetables within four days of application and wash them carefully when you do.”

“For centuries, gardeners have used home-made mixtures of tobacco and water as a natural pesticide to kill insect pests,” the Science Daily reported.

A “green” pesticide industry based on tobacco could provide income for tobacco farmers, and as well as a new eco-friendly pest-control agent, the scientists say. They describe a promising way to convert tobacco leaves into pesticides with pyrolysis.

That process involves heating tobacco leaves to about 900 degrees Fahrenheit in a vacuum, to

produce an unre�ined substance called bio-oil.

The scientists tested tobacco bio-oil against a wide variety of insect pests, including 11 different fungi, four bacteria, and the Colorado potato beetle. The oil killed all of the beetles and blocked the growth of two types of bacteria and one fungus. “Even after removal of the nicotine, the oil remained a very effective pesticide,” the scientists who conducted the study claimed.

In the Philippines, the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) of the Department of Agriculture has found that that tobacco dust can help lessen the population of nuisance snails that inhabit �ishponds and �ish cages.

The ef�icacy of tobacco dust has been proven by studies conducted by a team from the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center in Tigbauan, Iloilo. Field testing in �ishponds in Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur con�irmed the validity of the scienti�ic studies.

“Tobacco dust is organic, readily degradable, and environment-friendly,” the NTA said in a press statement. “The absence of pesticide residues contributes to the marketability and exportability of local �ish and ensures consumer safety, aside from being free from chemical residues.”

To some, tobacco may be a killer but to others, it can save lives. “Tobacco, divine, rare super excellent tobacco, which goes far beyond all panaceas, potable gold and philosopher’s stones, a sovereign remedy to all diseases,” Robert Burton once said.

Columbus (from which the capital city of Ohio was named after) noted that dried leaves were carried by a man in a canoe near the island of Ferdinandina because they were esteemed for their healthfulness. Two members of his crew also observed people in what is now Cuba carrying a burning torch that contained tobacco, the purpose of which (it was later known) was to disinfect and help ward off disease and fatigue.

Filipinos have been using tobacco, too, as a medicinal plant. The website of the Healing Wonders of Philippine Medicinal Plants gives brief information: “The (tobacco) leaves are antispasmodic, discutient, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, irritant, narcotic, sedative and sialagogue. They are used externally in the treatment of rheumatic swelling, skin diseases and scorpion stings.

“Wet tobacco leaves can be applied to stings in order to relieve the pain,” the website said. “They are also a certain cure for painful piles. A homeopathic remedy is made from the

dried leaves. It is used in the treatment of nausea and travel sickness.”

Here’s a word of warning: “The plant should be used with great caution, when taken internally as it is an addictive narcotic. The active ingredients can also be absorbed through the skin.”

Tobacco leaves and the smoke generated when they are burned contain over four thousand chemicals. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, people who suffer from mental disorders such attention de�icit disorder, schizophrenia and the like may experience positive effects from smoking. Apparently, doses of nicotine have a short-term normalization effect on the EEG (electrical activity in the brain).

“Nicotine has long been a useful tool for researchers interested in probing the nervous system,” said Dr. Ovid Pomerleau, director of the Behavioral Medicine Program of the University of Michigan.

Nicotine is one of the most studied of all drugs. At the beginning of the century, the earliest research into neurotransmitters involved the effects of nicotine.

The �irst neurotransmitter receptor identi�ied was the nicotine receptor. Nicotine mimics the actions of acetylcholine and has been shown to modulate many neurotransmitters.

Some considerable researches have been made as to the role of nicotine receptors in the central nervous system in human cognitive functioning.

Initial investigations of the effect of nicotinic agents in both normal and diseased individuals have con�irmed the importance of the integrity of these systems for normal cognitive functioning, Dr. Pomerleau said.

There is now some intriguing new data suggesting that very low doses of nicotine can have dramatic effects in controlling the symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome, a rare neurologic disorder characterized by physical tics and uncontrollable vocalizations which are often �illed with obscenities.

“Most patients with Tourette’s syndrome are treated with a neuroleptic (anti-seizure) agent of some sort, and generally respond well to this approach.

But there are a certain number of patients that are not as responsive to neuroleptics and need some further help. Our studies suggest that these patients may be helped by nicotine therapy,” said Dr. Paul Sanberg of the University of South Florida.

From 600 entries last year, Sunrise Events general manager Princess Galura said the �ield swelled 100 percent after a total of 1,200 participants registered for the 5k run which serves as a side event for the main show, the Alveo Ironman 70.3 Davao slated on Sunday, March 24.

Galura said the slots were all sold out 70 minutes after they of�icially opened the registration

during Valentine’s Day. “Binuksan namin yung registration ng 8:00am on February 14, after 9:10am, sarado na,” she said.

Galura, however, said everyone can expect a women-empowered Friday afternoon as women of all age, size and shape will crowd the streets from Azuela Cove to R. Castillo.

Jozim Eugenio, Hiro Takei and Elmer Santiago, however, completes the Herbalife Nutrition triathlon team that will engage in a grueling 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run race that attracts over 2,000 triathletes from 80 countries of the world.

Valenzuela, however, shared that each of their athletes are using the product which makes them more effective not just as ambassadors but also as seasoned triathletes.

For his part, Valencia said the team trained whole-year-round as they identi�ied the Alveo Ironman 70.3 Davao as one of their major races.

"Everybody has really put a lot of effort, put a lot of time in training but the pressure is actually there.

We just try to put it a little bit at the back of our mind and just focus on the best performance that we can," he said, adding that a lot of things could happen during the race day.

he De La Salle University Green Archers annexed the Araw ng Davao Collegiate Basketball League championship with a 73-57 win over the Lyceum Pirates before a jampacked Davao City Recreation Center on Thursday night.

The Green Archers relied on their imposing frontline of of Justine Baltazar, Brandon Bates and Tyrus Hill and the snipings of Encho Serrano, Andrei Caracut and Don Lim to outlast the stubborn Pirates.

Serrano, who was scoring consistently throughout the tournament, sealed the cham-

pionship with a vicious slam, 49 ticks to go.

The tournament, sanctioned by the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) 11, serves as one of the sporting highlights of the 82nd Araw ng Davao organized by the city government of Davao with the backing of The Royal Mandaya Hotel and Matina Enclaves.

SBP 11 regional director and Presidential Adviser on Sports Glenn Escandor thanked the four participating teams DLSU and University of the East from the UAAP, Lyceum from the NCAA and University if Cebu from CESAFI for taking

part in this year’s hoopfest.

“We are grateful to the support of the four teams and the three leagues for responding positively to our invitation,” Escandor said.

He also thanked the Dabawenyos for coming to watch the games even with the inclement weather during the �irst two playdates.

“Maraming salamat sa mga fans, buhay na buhay ang basketball sa Davao dahil sa inyo,” the SBP top honcho said.

The Green Archers topped the eliminations after turning back the Pirates 98-95 on Wednesday night.
