omeowners of Monteritz Classic Estates, a middle-class subdivision in Maa, Davao City, oppose the construction by the government of a portion of the Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) which passes through Phase 1 of the subdivision.
The group’s opposition was explained during yesterday’s presentation of the Kapehan sa Dabaw media forum at SM Annex. Jesito V. Villamor, president of the Monteritz Classic Estates Homeowners Association, Inc. (MCEHAI), together with Dr. Anthony Alberto C. Angala, MCEHAI director,
told reporters their group was not consulted about the proposed alignment of the MRP, particularly the Tagum-Davao-Digos segment of the railway project. Villamor explained that during the dialogue between the representatives of the Department of Transportation (DoTR)
and its project consultant (ARUP) and the board of directors of MCEHAI last January 22, the members of the board of MCEHAI noticed that DoTR and ARUP made some adjustments in the railway project’s alignment due to objections and/or reactions from certain landowners from other areas like in Cabantian, Davao City to save a part of the subdivision and in Mintal, Davao City to save a subdivision with a golf course. In the case of MCEHAI, instead of saving the subdivision, the railway alignment somewhat condemned the subdivision, when DoTR
and ARUP realigned the railway, from the original plan of passing through a soon-to-be constructed Monteritz Town Plaza to the middle portion of Phase 1 of the subdivision, which already has townhouses and residential houses. Villamor said that 40 homeowners and 67 lot owners would be affected if the new plan pushes through and he believed it could adversely affect the quality of life of the subdivision’s residents. “We’re looking at the emotional cost that cannot be quantified because imagine the over 100
