Driven at 11 S ix years ago, the upsurge of the internet and the emerging power of social media triggered an economic downturn in the newspaper industry not just in the country but around the world. This was recession time for newspapers and not a few closed down.

For many newspaper companies, the slowdown provided a chilling reminder that there is nothing “comfortable” about the industry's future.

With increasing competition from digital media coupled with market volatility, the only security in newspaper business comes

from making sure that it is as ef�icient, nimble and innovation-focused as possible.

While many folded up, Edge Davao, as young as it was then at �ive years, decided to make a run for the challenge. From a weekly business paper that is relatively manageable, it jumped into the high

stakes competition of the daily newspaper market. Bold as it was, Edge Davao was determined.

DRIVEN BY DETERMINATION If you want to know what determination is look at the faces of runners who seemed like they were dying in an ironman competition that involved 4km of ocean swimming, 180km of cycling, and 42km of running.

That is determination.

Edge Davao looked at the faces of newspa-

pers who seemed like they were dying in a competition they are about to lose to the dictates of technology. And yet, it decided to be in that race.

The day you reach perfection is the day you have stopped running on passion. Failures are

rom its humble beginning 11 years ago, EDGE Davao has come a long, long way. Started as a business local weekly publication for Davao Region, this community newspaper has ventured has included other stories that shape the island Mindanao. After all, businesses are not the only thing that matter most but also events, people, updates, newsmakers, and histories.

o much have been said about writers and journalism.

“Journalism still, in a democracy, is the essential force to get the public educated and mobilized to take action on behalf of our ancient ideals,” Doris Kearns Goodwin said. Walter Cronkite has the same view: “Journalism is what we need to make democracy work.”

Isabel Allende also stated: “From journalism I learned to write under pressure, to work with deadlines, to have limited space and time, to conduct and interview, to �ind information, to re-

search, and above all, to use language as ef�iciently as possible and to remember always that there is a reader out there.”

We bring news to the people – no matter what. “News is what someone wants suppressed,” Katharine Graham once pointed out. “Everything else is advertising. The power is to set the agenda. What we print and what we don’t print matter a lot.”

Some people think, a journalist is a person who in�luences others. They seem to be right, but journalism is not just about writing or reporting; it is more

than that. “The �irst essence of journalism is to know what you want to know, the second, is to �ind out who will tell you,” John Gunther explained.

Being a journalist is not all glamour and blitzkrieg, it also means living and advocacy. “I think that having a job in journalism,” Ellen Goodman said, “despite all of the changes, is still a fantastic way to be – make a living observing your society and having a chance to use your voice.”

I never meant to become a writer, much less a journalist. When I was a kid, I dreamed

of becoming an illustrator. Much father had a great in�luence when it comes to reading. At night, he brought some comics which he rented from the market.

During the days, we consoled ourselves by listening to radios. There was nothing much to do at night; cellular phones,

No need of any introductions, this man is already an icon in Davao journalism. Tony is every writer's dream editor. He is compassionate, understanding and always ready to provide the needed guidance and yes, some schooling, to all members of the newsroom.

He spends time mentoring young writers even from other media outlets and is well regarded in the media community as a revered veteran who commands respect from fellow journalists to the 'high and mighty' politicians and businessmen. 'He has been around' is what best sums up his jaded career in journalism. And yes, he never gets tired. Still going at age, uhm... forget it. He's an ageless virtuoso.

Tony built the newsroom with that unique mentality anchored at making everyone develop versatility. All he wants is for team members to be in that same page, to learn

and develop writing skills with strong foundation that allows for one to switch assignments with ease. Seamless journalism as he calls it, in the same manner that he epitomized that Edge Davao motto of "Serving a Seamless Society."

In his more than half a century as editor and broadcast executive, Tony has mentored many of the working journalists covering Mindanao and the country. One of his ‘students’ is Emmanuel “Manny” Pinol who wasss an outstanding newspaper editor and broadcaster before becoming a provincial governor of North Cotabato thrice and now secretary of the Department of Agriculture.

Aside from his work in the Edge Davao newsroom, Tony �inds time in being convenor/moderator of the 4-decade old Kapehan sa Dabaw media forum, whose topics he thinks he conceptualizes and speakers he invites.

high school, my plan changed. I wanted to become a writer – after readingReader’s Digest at our library (our English teacher required us to make a home reading report every week!).

“How I wish I can write something for this very informative magazine,” I told myself. I tried to contribute a few anecdotes and stories for “Laughter, The Best Medicine,” but they never saw light. (Not knowing that in 2000, I would start writing fulllength articles for the magazine, but that’s another story.)

I was in college when I started writing for national magazines like Mod, Woman’s Home Companion, Express Week, Mr. and

was an American missionary working in our hometown, just 10 kilometers away from the town proper.

I decided to interview him with the intention of writing a story for a national publication. I did a pro�ile story on him – and had it published in Focus Philippines. I wrote another feature, focusing on the agriculture insight, that was printed in Green�ields.

A month after the publication, I received a letter from Watson if I was interested to join his staff as information of�icer. I was totally caught by surprise, but after some thoughts, I accepted the offer.

Since it is a training center for farmers, I started writing agricul-

nalist.

“Why don’t you write also for Press Foundation of Asia (PFA),” he told me.

“Your articles seem �it for its weekly dispatch called DEPTHnews.”

He gave the mailing address and I started writing for the PFA, also a Ramon Magsaysay awardee just like Watson. (I also had a short stint working for International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, another Ramon Magsaysay recipient.)

As a regular contributor for PFA, I was given the opportunity of attending a workshop for community journalists.

One of those was business and economics reporting for journalists working in various parts of the country. Another one

All in all, I have received 35 journalism awards – and still counting. I bring back the honor and glory to God for all the blessings He has given me. “It doesn’t matter how many times your win an award,” Zinedine Zidane once pointed out. “It is always very special.”

I agree.

And I am glad I am a writer. I can be a voice of change, a catalyst of innovation, and a tool of information. I will write and I will keep on writing.

“Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault,” Henry Grunwald reminded. “It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumphs and the signs of horror are still in the air.”

He became Managing Editor of Edge Davao and was Tony's 'toolbox' which paved the way for the newsroom's culture of

multi-tasking.

When fate set him off miles away to the land Down Under, Neil stayed on and worked remotely like a virtual domotics.

He epitomized a seamless newsroom using the wonders of technology to put the Edge Davao newsroom into automation. For the past three years, Neil kept his virtual presence day after day and deadlines after deadlines. Distance may have rendered him a mere virtual bully, but he still gets things done on anything that's good for the newspaper.

Lean Daval Jr is a selftaught photographer from Davao City. He is the son of proli�ic and well-respected cartoonist, artist and local media practitioner Lan Daval.

Lean started his career rather oddly juggling his time as a wedding photographer and freelance photographer for Edge Davao and other publications. He of�icially joined Edge Davao on February 2012.

Lean is a late bloomer in photography. He never picked up a camera until the age of 36. He was inspired to become a photo-

journalist after seeing the works of con�lict photographers Enrique de Castro, Goran Tomasevic and Jorge Silva of Reuters and Associated Press’ Rodrigo Abd. Not long after, Lean won various awards but the highlight of his young career was when he won ‘singlehandedly’ the Best Photojournalism award for Edge Davao from the prestigious Philippine Press Institute on May 2016 against the more equipped and more complete battery of photojournalists of bigger publications from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

A student of life, Leebai Sinsuat Ambolodto, MBA hoards on details that allow her to enjoy the in�inite surprises that come her way. Not meant to be a writer, she learned to love words and storytelling in the most unconventional of ways. Her foremost repertoire is food features teasing readers to eat and indulge on calories. For Leebai, 'feeding' people's minds with a good food read is her favourite past

time.

At present, she has moved on to the pages of Edge Davao as their resident online and of�line ninja. She continues to write her column The Royal Chef and doubles as the designated deskwoman for the paper's day to day operations as well as man the online and social media platforms of the newspaper.

If anything is worth tasting, anything is worth this royal chef's writing.

This dude is as carefree as a dog. Edge Davao newsroom's newest homie, Adam is learning the meaning of being multidimensional.

Adam admits to having been in a roller-coaster

ride. His tattoos speak for his adventures and mishaps. A father at 21, a rockstar wannabe, he dabbled as medical rep, entrepreneur. Many times he had been refused a job because of his tattoos, he wanted to

be a band vocalist but never had the right voice. But he always �inds a way to bounce back.

When he �irst reported to work at Edge Davao, he came in with his virtual backpack of scorebooks, stat sheets, balls and anything sports as his career took off in sportswriting elsewhere. Little did he know, he would be thrust into a whole new world.

From being used to covering action-packed basketball games, boxing and karatedo, to name a few, Adam was deployed by his new home to sit and record press conferences,

ring police and military of�icials, and roam around City Hall and Sangguniang Panlungsod. He was introduced to the mentality at Edge Davao that is comparable to basketball's position-less system--being able to play all positions.

In this case, being able to write all assignments.

And he is slowly adapting to this unique Swiss-knife culture.

Adam believes, "Something worth having never comes easy." Finding a niche at Edge Davao, this self-confessed "bad boy with a good heart" has just began.

CHRISTIAN LUMAIN The Design Team Behind Edge Davao's powerful words are the men who create the visuals. The men who grapple with the design and layout to come up with the most appealing layout day in and day out.

That's another strength in Edge Davao. The designs are executed with some simple things in mind: to be different, to stand out, and to be ahead.

These two guys who must have been christened on the same day as they bear the same names,

carry out this philosophy as demanded by the standards of the paper.

Christian Jay Rafal is the lead layout artist who also dabbles up as cartoonist.

He is an out-of-this-world artist who can spring a surprise just when everything seems to get boring. Christian Lumain is the 'other Christian' who pinch hits on weekends and works as the back up. The two may have contrasting styles but they too, can be outrageous when spoiled to bring out their ideas.

the Fourth Estate as a bastion of democracy in the archipelago,” it explained in its website. “The importance of a free press and its role in the shaping of a nation cannot be completely undermined.”

The RCM Award was not the �irst. Before that, EDGE Davao has also garnered a total of 11 awards from the Civic Journalism Community Press Awards given annually by the Philippine Press Institute.

In 2010, EDGE Davao received two awards in the weekly category: Best in Science and Environmental Reporting and Best in Business and Economic Reporting.

Only three years old at that time, the paper topped nearly 200 weekly papers of the country in science and environment reporting for presenting a “holistic approach to the reporting of science and technology coupled with environment.

It presents many feature articles and news features on health, science, technology and environment. It is easy

to read and grammatically correct and well-written.”

As for the second award, the jurors’ agreed the “coverage of news on the economy and business and trade” of the paper “has more impact on the business community of the region.” It also recognized its two sections: “Agritrends” and “Entrepreneurs.”

In 2012, when EDGE Davao became a daily, it was adjudged Best in Science and Environment Reporting again “for having a dedicated science and environment section.” The citation reads further: “The paper is outstanding for regularly publishing S and T articles that appeal to majority of its readers” and that it “publishes articles that tackle topics in easy to understand manner and written using popular language.”

EDGE Davao “also gives attention to science news from various parts of the world thus promoting a global mindset and keeping its readers updated on emerging and ongoing issues

and developments in the �ields of science and environment.”

In 2014, Edge Davao was chosen as the Best Edited Community Newspaper in the daily category. The paper was cited for “allowing the readers to arrive with a stand, succeeded in manifesting the conviction of the community members while embodying transparency and excellence in delivering the news to the community.”

EDGE Davao received two more awards: Best in Environmental Reporting and Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting.

EDGE Davao accomplished the same feat in 2017, winning three on its four nominations: Best Edited Community Newspaper, Best in Environmental Reporting, and Best in Photojournalism. It was also a �inalist in Editorial Page.

EDGE Davao has also been a sort of an instrument in winning this author several trophies from various award-giving bodies.

In 2015, a year

after I joined EDGE Davao, I got two awards from the Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) for my features that appeared in the paper. I was cited as Best Reporter in Print for my story on Acquired Immune De�iciency Syndrome (AIDS). My two-part series on Davao City (Then and Now) was judged as Best Investigative Report in Print.

Also that year, the Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation bestowed me my second Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Award (Best Agriculture Feature Story-Regional) for my three-part series on possible solutions for forthcoming food crisis that was serialized in EDGE Davao. food security from. (The previous year, I won the same award but for my national feature story on pig raising, which appeared in Marid Agribusiness Magazine.)

In 2016, the GMEA again recognized my three-part series on the dwindling �ishery resources (“Where have all our �ish gone?”). The online

version of the series was chosen as Best Online Report.

My story on soil erosion (“Topsoil: Going, going, gone?”) was chosen by the Philippine Agricultural Journalists, Inc. as Environment Story of the Year, thus winning my third Binhi Award.

In 2017, I got two major Binhi Awards: Agricultural Journalist of the Year (third place) and Environmental Journalist of the Year (third place). The PAJ cited my stories that appeared in the pages of EDGE Davao.

Last year, I got two more Binhi Awards: third in agricultural reporting and my piece on climate change (which was published by Philippines Graphic) was chosen as Best Climate Change Story.

In October, I �lew to the United States. While there, I got a good news that I was one of the winners of the Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards. I asked our editor, Mr. Ajero, to receive the award in my behalf.

Beware of your personal account info being phished

A

s the year 2019 gets underway, don’t forget to protect yourself and your money against fraudsters and their deceitful activities.

Fraud comes in various forms. Shockingly, fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated in tricking bank clients into revealing their personal information and account details.

One of the methods these fraudsters have been using is called phishing. Phishing is the criminal intent to obtain a person’s sensitive bank information to steal their money. It usually involves sending an email or text message that appears legitimate but will contain links to a fake website requesting sensitive information like username, password, account details, mobile number and one-time passwords.

Once these details are stolen, the fraudster now has access to your account and is free to do money transfers to his/ her account.

Outsmart fraudsters with these tips: 1. Never give out con�idential information such as internet banking username, password, or one-time passwords (OTP).

Banks never ask for these.

2. Do not change passwords through an email request sent by

suspicious senders. The change of internet banking passwords should be done only after customers have successfully logged on to their secure online banking site.

3. Do not click on website links included in suspicious emails.

They may redirect to a different site that looks like the of�icial bank website. Tip: Check if the website address begins

with “https,” which means that information provided will be encrypted.

4. In relation, never click on any link provided by emails to change bank account details.

5. If you suspect that an email is attempting to phish your information, please report it immediately by forwarding the email to ReportPhish@ bdo.com.ph.

6. If you think that you may have responded to a suspicious email, change your account’s password by logging on BDO Personal Online Banking at www.bdo. com.ph as soon as possible.

7. Do not hesitate to call your branch and inform them of the type of incident.
