OTE buying in the OFWrich Dubai is reportedly rampant with offers ranging from AED 500 to as high as AED 1,000. Dubai currency Arab Emirate Dirham has a current exchange rate or P12.80 as of yesterday. That means, votes fetch from P6,400 to P12,800. According to a Dabawenyo Dubai-based safety officer who requested anonymity, some Filipinos reportedly receive offers from two presidential candidates. The source told Edge Davao in a private message that offers reportedly from UNA presidential bet Vice President Jejomar Binay amounted
to AED500 (P6,400) while the offers from administration candidate Mar Roxas amounted to AED1,000 (P12,800). The source added that those who agree to “sell” their votes are given a Comelec form already filled up for the candidate. “Daghan ang nidawat pero dli na man matabang ang supporters ni Duterte diri. Gidawat lang nila ang sapi pero pagabot sa sulod mukuha sila ug laing form,” According to the source, about 80 percent of OFWs in Dubai are for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. “Duterte man ang mga OFW diri 80% pero dili jud
nato mawala sa isip na buhaton tanan tikas pra mapildi si Digong (Duterte),” the source said. Filipinos in the United Arab Emirates are migrants or descendants of the Philippines living in the United Arab Emirates. More than 700,000 Filipinos live in the UAE, of which 450,000 live in Dubai, and they form 21.3% of the population of Dubai. Dubai is home to the largest population of Filipinos in the UAE, followed by Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. In 2007, Filipinos in the UAE sent more than US$500 million in remittances back to the Philippines. Filipinos in the United Arab Emirates are primari-
ly migrant Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) employed in the architecture, construction, cargo shipping design engineering, energy, information technology, marketing, medical, real estate, retail, telecommunications, and tourism sectors or as domestic helpers. The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment also has two Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) in the UAE, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These offices, as well as agreements between the Filipino and UAE governments, have set the monthly minimum salary for OFW’s at US$400. Because of the high
