NO HERO’S BURIAL FOR MARCOS: NGO By TIZIANA CELINE S. PIATOS

GROUP of human rights advocates have written an open letter to President Duterte urging him to change his mind concerning his decision to allow the remains of the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB). Mags Maglana, a human rights advocate from Konsensya Davao, said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw in SM City Annex on Monday, that the President should not ignore the opinion of people who are against his decision to bury Marcos in the cemetery, a place reserved for heroes and public servants. Maglana said that President Duterte must also acknowledge the fact that there are around

16 million people who voted for him, but do not actually agree with him regarding Marcos’ burial at the LNMB, especially those who suffered injustices during the term of the late dictator. She noted that the victims, survivors, and their families should not be subjected to further indignity by one elite family which has remained unapologetic and unrepentant over their patriarch’s past misdeeds. “We do not want them (Marcos family) to gain from the exoneration that will happen soon with a Marcos at the LNMB,” she said. Maglana pointed out that it would be better if President Duterte will adopt the deal made between the Marcos fam-

ily and former President Fidel V. Ramos wherein the remains of the ex-president will be buried in Batac, Ilocos Norte as part of the terms allowing the return of Marcos’ body from Hawaii in 1993. Based on the National Pantheon Law (Republic Act 289) burials at the Libingan ng mga Bayani should “perpetuate the memory of all the Presidents of the Philippines, national heroes and patriots for the inspiration and emulation of this generation and generations still unborn.” Hence, Marcos may qualify on the grounds of being a former soldier and former president. But those opposing his burial there have pointed out that
