“W

E cannot move forward if we allow the past to

pull us back.” This was the opening statement made by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) during the opening of the 17th Congress on Monday, July 25. Duterte’s first SONA, the longest in history, observers said, lasted one hour and 32 minutes. “Finger pointing is not my way,” Duterte said, adding that he will not waste his precious time dwelling on the sins of the

past. He presented the direction of his administration on fighting illegal drugs, corruption and crime, economic policies and governance and reiterated his commitment to fight illegal drugs without letup. “I call on the Philippine National Police, the barangay chairmen, the mayors, governors and all those occupying seats in offices and authority not to lower their guard,” he stressed. He asked authorities to double and even triple their efforts and vowed that “We will not stop until the last drug

lord, the last financier and the last pusher have surrendered or put behind bars, or below the ground if they so wish.” “Do your job and you will have the unwavering support of the Office of the President. I will be with you all the way. Abuse your authority and there will be a hell to pay for you would have become worse than criminality itself,” he said. The president also said that he already ordered the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to hasten the conduct of investigation and adjudication of administrative cases against police officers

involved in criminalities and illegal activities, and conduct lifestyle checks on police officers and members “In this quest, I will put at stake my honor, my life and the presidency itself,” he firmly said. He said his administration will also prioritize the rehabilitation of drug users by increasing the residential treatment and rehabilitation facilities in all regions in the country, saying his administration will also ensure to uplift the welfare of the Filipino people. “My administration shall

WO sons of Mindanao took the leadership of both the upper and lower Houses as the 17th Congress of opened on Monday, July 25. Twenty senators elected Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III as the new Senate President, 3 voted for Senator Ralph Recto while Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, the running mate of President Rodrigo Duterte, was absent during the voting.

Those who voted for Pimentel were Senators Recto, Vicente Sotto III, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Franklin Drilon, Sonny Angara, Bam Aquino, Nancy Binay, Leila de Lima, Joseph Victor Ejercito, Sherwin Gatchalian, Richard Gordon, Gregorio Honasan, Risa Hontiveros, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Manny Pacquiao, Francis Pangilinan, Grace Poe, Joel Villanueva, and Cynthia Villar.
