T
HE camp of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte yesterday said his second-place showing in the latest Pulse Asia survey actually represents a 7-percent rise from his standing last September. The survey, taken on December 4 to 11, showed Vice President Jejomar Binay regaining the top spot with 33 percent, a 14-percent rise from his position in September. Senator Grace Poe, the frontrunner in September, dropped to 21 percent, placing her in a statistical tie with Duterte who had 23 percent. Mar Roxas trailed behind at 17 percent while Senator
Miriam Defensor-Santiago stood at 4 percent. Duterte’s second-place position contrasted with the result of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released earlier this month which placed him on top at 38 percent. Duterte’s spokesperson, former councilor Peter Laviña, said the Pulse Asia survey actually showed that the mayor has continued his steady rise in poll surveys. “From 16 percent in September, his support base has risen to 23 percent or a jump by 7 percent,” Laviña said. He pointed out that Dute-
rte’s ratings for Mindanao “show him as the only one with a clear bailiwick.” “And his growing support among those in the ABC class, who abhor cussing, is the highest among the five presidential bets,” he added. Laviña said while the other candidates have been preparing as early as 2010, “Duterte was a latecomer and has not spent for ads unlike the others. He remains the only one in the Pulse Asia Survey to have climbed consistently since his name was included during the first quarter of this year,” he said. For his part, Davao City
first district Rep. Karlo Alexei Nograles said the disqualification cases against Duterte “have somewhat affected his ratings in the latest Pulse Asia survey.” “That is why we call on Comelec (Commission on Elections) to resolve with dispatch this month of December the DQ cases filed by (broadcaster Ruben) Castor and the latest one filed by (Rizalito) David against our candidate Duterte,” he said. Nograles also said Binay’s ratings were boosted when Duterte said he would support Binay if he (Duterte) gets disqualified.
