RACE yourselves for more than five hours of rotating blackouts daily until Sunday, November 29. Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) yesterday announced a 94-megawatt (MW) power deficit following the implementation of preventive maintenance shutdown (PMS) of the 105-(MW) Unit 1 of Steag coal-fired power plant and the emergency shutdown of one of the 150-MW plants of Therma South, Inc. (TSI) because of damage to its boiler. In a press conference yes-
terday, DLPC president Arturo Milan also said the contracted supply of Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI) of 30MW has been reduced to 19MW due to a PMS on one of its 45MW units. Milan said the Sibulan hydropower plant has also issued an advisory reducing its capability to facilitate an emergency repair on one its units He said DLPC will continue to run its standby 30MW Bajada Diesel Plant and implement the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) in which participating large customers will
use their own generating sets instead of drawing power from the distribution line. “With this situation, Davao Light is left with only 246MW to supply the forecasted demand of its customers of 340MW,” Milan said. “This will result in rotating power interruptions with a maximum duration of three to four hours during peak hours, which is from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and a maximum of 1.5 hours during off-peak, which is from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.,” he said. DLPC started the rotational
power interruption yesterday, November 23, in its franchise areas which include the whole Davao City, Panabo City, and portions of Davao del Norte like Sto. Tomas. “The implementation of the rotating power interruptions will continue until the said generating plants will be back online,” Milan said. It is not only Davao City that is facing tight power supply but the whole Mindanao. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines
