IVE provinces in Mindanao were included in the Tsunami Information No.1 issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) yesterday morning at 7:22 a.m. following the 8.3 earthquake that hit off the coast of Chile. Included provinces in the advisory were Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte,
Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, and Davao del Sur (including Davao City). A “strong distant earthquake” occurred near the coast of Chile yesterday at around 6:55 a.m. Philippine Standard Time located at the 31.5 degree South, 71.9 degree West with a depth of 33 kilometer. The Phivolcs advisory said the quake measured at
7.9 magnitude, but later reports had updated it to 8.3 magnitude. “An earthquake of this has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes of hours,” the Phivolcs advisory said. No evacuation order was issued, and at press
time no tsunami was reported yet in the country. Other areas that were included in the warning were Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Quezon, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. Meanwhile, a person-
