T
he City government of Davao has assured all visitors of the city’s security during the forthcoming Kadayawan Festival next month.
The assurance came amidst reports of terror threats in the city. Local tourism officials have also been participating in the campaign to ensure public safety since the Kadayawan festival has always been a local tourist attraction. “Peace and order is the most important thrust of our Mayor and the assurance is really making sure that our police is up to their toes and they are not taking any raw or unverified threat lightly. Threats are not possible to completely avoid for any city in that matter, but we are not in control of travel advisories from consulates informing the public about our security status,” Lisette Marques, City Tourism Officer, said during the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw media forum at the SM City Davao on Monday. Even if these reports are raw and unverified, the City Tourism Office (CTO) refuses
to take form of terror threat for granted in cooperation with the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and Central 911. DCPO and Central 911 officials will be stricter as security is expected to be even tighter compared last year. We also have groups that have signified their commitment to come to the city. They just want a

The amateur boxing tournament last July 5 in Compostela Valley which turned tragic after a 15year old boxer was forced to fight through the distance and eventually died is a “colorum” event. Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) Region 11 director Gene Rose Tecson told Edge Davao yesterday that the tragedy-stricken boxing tournament is illegal and not sanctioned by the country’s amateur boxing governing body.
“We don’t have a club in ComVal. Somebody tried to form one there years back but it didn’t take off. Problem now are the people who started the tournament or whatever it was with utter disregard for the safety of the amateur boxers,” Tecson said. “These people kasi always think na okay suntukan lang naman yan. They should be jailed and beaten up para marealize nila what it’s like if walang rules.” Tecson said some people are treating the sport
like cockfighting. “Kung sa sabong pa, tigbakay,” she said. Gerry Estubo died after he was knocked down twice in a three-round fight of a barangay boxing match in Barangay Magading in Nabunturan town in Compostela Valley province. GMA Davao, the first to report the incident, said in a report on Tuesday that Estubo was allowed by the referee to fight even if he was already floored twice
