SPECIFIC TARGET: DAVAO Palace: Terrorism threat is limited to Davao City

PRESIDENTIAL Spokesman Edwin Lacierda yesterday said military intelligence reports indicated that the terrorism threat was specifically directed at Davao City.

“The information we have is that it is limited to Davao City,” he said, adding “(there’s) no threats in Manila,” he was quoted in a Philippine News Agency (PNA) dispatch.

Still, Lacierda said that police and military forces in Metro Manila are in “full vigilance” mode even as the terror threat in Davao City is not expected to spill over to the metropolitan area.

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma stressed that it is normal procedure that when a place is under threat, other places are on full vigilance mode as well.

HE three men accused in the killing of Cebu-based hotel magnate Richard L. King will face trial at the Regional Trial Court (RTC) following the resolution of the City Prosecutor’s Office finding probable cause.

Prosecutor Panfilo Junior Lovitos of Davao City Prosecutors’ Office, indicted Paul Dave M. Labang, Rommel E. Dela Cerna and Rodel Dela Cerna for murder based on the complaint of the victim’s brother

In his two-page resolution approved by assistant city prosecutor Victor C. Sepulveda, Lovitos found probable cause to charge the three based on their admission stated in its sworn statement submitted to the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor recommended no bail on the charge filed against them.

The resolution stated that Labang was apprehended for illegal possession of firearms last June

22 at Team Davao Shooting Range in Ma-a Diversion road, Davao City.

It stated that pending the investigation of the murder case involving King and after he was submitted for inquest proceeding on June 23 for gun possession, Labang confided to the police authorities on his involvement on King’s slay.

The resolution said Labang voluntarily submitted himself to police custody for investigation of the case.

He executed his extra-judi-

cial confession claiming the responsibility as the trigger man who gunned down King last June 12.

It is stated that in his confession he was assisted by lawyer Ben Joseph O. Tesiorna and the alleged trigger implicated Rommel Dela Cerna who served as the look-out, Rodel Dela Cerna as the driver who drove the getaway motorcycle and Superintendent Leonardo A. Felonia, head of the Regional Intelligence

Coco farmers to go on hunger strike if government ignores 10 demands

OCONUT farmers in Davao Region and elsewhere in the country will go on a hunger strike starting September if government will not grant their 10 demands.

This was learned from Jerry dela Cerna, convenor of Davao Coconut Farmers Regional Consultative Assembly, during the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Annex yesterday.

Dela Cerna said that leaders of coconut farmers agreed to ask for the establishment of a coconut farmers development foundation that “shall

manage the coco levy funds and assets” as the first demand.

The non-stock, non-profit foundation will be controlled by the government and participated in by elected representatives of all coconut farmers that will focus on the development of the coconut industry like the establishment of coconut university and planting of additional one million hectares of coconut lands. The other demands are: (2) recapitalization of the United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB).

ONLY 6 OUT OF 45 CASES

Anti-trafficking drive nets few convictions M

ORE than a decade since Republic Act 9208 or Anti-trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 was implemented, only 6 of the 45 cases filed in various courts in Davao region got conviction.

Lawyer Antonio B. Arellano, regional prosecutor said in a presentation on the update of human trafficking in the region that only 13 percent conviction rate was netted since the implementation of the law in 2003 until the second quarter of 2014.

In the national level, there were only 62 convictions of the total 1,519 cas-

es filed in courts all over the country. The performance represents a conviction rate of only 4 percent.

“This small number of conviction in the past was attributed to the weak case build up that leads to the dismissal of cases due to insufficiency of evidences,” Arellano said, describing the performance as “dismal.”

Arellano said that when personnel of the Regional Prosecutors Office was asked to assess human trafficking cases in the region, they found out that “ most cases are dismissed

DSWD holds orientation on community-driven program

HE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) recently conducted a three-day orientation on the Kalahi CIDSS-National Community-Driven Development Program (NCDDP) for local chief executives and LGU personnel.

Present were LGU officials from Boston, Tarragona, Manay, Monkayo, Maco, Nabunturan, Cateel, Caraga, New Bataan, Nabunturan, Cateel, Caraga, Compostela, New Corella, Governor Generoso, San Isidro, Pantukan and Kapalong.

The orientation covered program background, size of block grants to eligible LGUs, and conditions for LGU participation.

A flagship poverty alleviation program of the National Government, Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP is the scale up of Kalahi-CIDSS. The goal of this program is to help barangay/communities of targeted municipalities become empowered to

achieve improved access to services and to participate in more inclusive local planning, budgeting and implementation and to support community-driven post-disaster response and development in disaster-affected municipalities.

To be implemented from 2014 to 2019, Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP has P9.3 billion project cost nationwide. Of this amount, US$479 million is from a World Bank loan and US$372.1 million comes from the ADB Emergency Assistance Loan.

Eligible to participate in the NCDDP are 4th to 6th class municipalities with poverty incidence higher than the national average of 25% based on the 2009 small area estimates of NSCB (National Statistical Coordinating Board), 1st to 3rd class municipalities with poverty incidence of 40% higher, and Yolanda-affected provinces. Christmas came in June for pupils of two hard-up schools in Marilog district when AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South brought joy boxes from the US to hundreds of pupils. The boxes came from Christian Light Foundation, a partner of the Aboitiz Foundation Inc. The boxes contained toys, school

supplies, hygiene kits even love letters from American kids who packed the boxes themselves. More than 150 pupils from the Lumondao Elemntary School and the Marahan West Elem. School received the boxes.

DPWH won’t implement PDAF

LL identified road and other infrastructure projects funded under the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of congressmen in Davao Region will not be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 11.

“We don’t have plan to implement all of the projects, unless it has already started,” DPWH regional director Mariano Alquiza said last Thursday during the MindaNOW Enrichment Summit at Gran Menseng Hotel.

He said that even the present proposed projects will not prioritized.

This was after PDAF was suspended by the Supreme Court last year September in the midst of the P10-billion pork barrel scam linking senators and congressmen from all over the country.

“Ginagawang political railway ng congressmen natin ang PDAF,” he said.

Alquiza said that before the court decision on PDAF, congressmen have identified various roads, buildings and

other infrastructure projects.

Most of the projects proposed for funding under PDAF were the construction of barangay hall, city roads, barangay roads, municipal roads and farm to market roads (FMR) with costs from P200, 000 to P1 million.

Alquiza said one of the problems in the proposed road projects is the inability to create a road network as these are not connected to national roads.

He however assured that all PDAF projects that already

started will be finished.

“We included these projects in our priority projects this year. These should be finished,” he said.

As of June 30, DPWH 11 completed all the three projects originally funded under PDAF in the region totally amounting to P5-million. Two of these are in Compostela Valley and one in Davao Oriental.

HE government on Monday reiterated that distribution of land to farmers continues despite the expiration of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms (CARPER) on June 30.

“Patuloy po ang land distribution. So the end of CARPER does not mean the end of land distribution. We are in the process of distributing lands based on those properties, based on those land holdings that have been issued Notices of Coverage (NOC),” said Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda in a press briefing.

Lacierda said Agrarian Reform Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes is committed to pursuing and to issuing the NOC. “In fact, naka-issue siya until today, last day na ngayon ng issuance of Notice of Coverage. Yes, there have been

significant improvements on the amount of land holdings being covered by CARP,” he said.

An NOC initiates the compulsory acquisition and distribution of private agricultural lands, one of the modes of distribution under the CARPER. “The early part of CARP, ang kina-CARP kasi natin ‘yung mga huge government holdings na walang problema sa taumbayan because these are government lands.

President Benigno S. Aquino III signed del Rosario’s appointment as RDC-XI Chair last May 16, 2014, making him the fourth Chairperson since the Council’s establishment in 1986.

Del Rosario vowed to fulfill his mandate as head of the highest policy-making body that sets the direction of all the economic and social development efforts in the Davao Region.

He revealed that he will hasten the imple-

mentation of the updated Regional Development Plan, which charts the Region XI’s development until 2016.

The plan paves the way for attaining the region’s vision as the nation’s rising global frontier.

At the opening of the week-long Kadagayaan Festival 2014 in celebration of Davao del Norte’s 47th founding anniversary, Del Rosario also told members of the media that he would call for the review of all the plans and projects proposed in the Council since two decades ago.

The governor said he will push big ticket projects that are deemed indispensable to the growth of the region, such as the proposed bridge linking the Island Garden City of Samal to Davao City.

He said he will press the conduct of the feasibility study of the bridge, which is touted to boost tourism and investment in the island.

Y love story with Mt. Hamiguitan began in 1965 when an old Mandaya chieftain, DarambaBago, visited me countless times so I could write about the beloved forest of his youth.

It was not until I was elected mayor of San Isidro in 1992 that an organized team of 35 municipal officials and employees explored Mt. Hamiguitan for a week, so that it could be included among the 12 identified tourist spots of the municipality, amidst criticism from my detractors who then believed that the funds allocated for the mountain exploration was a waste of money, which should have been better spent to distrib-

ute rice for our poor sector.

The majestic Mt. Hamiguitan showed off her magnificent assets… the numerous rare flora and fauna… the unending winding rivers and cool water falls… the thick mossy forest one could only squint one’s eyes to see the sunny skies above… the more than 100 species of butterflies in the hidden garden… the rare carnivorous pitcher plants whose shapes, sizes and colors can only be found there… the Philippine Eagle family hovering over the forest kingdom… that includes the Pygmy Forest or Bonsai Field.

mountain for the benefit of the people of San Isidro… by mining the millions of tons of high-grade minerals in the bosom of Mt. Hamiguitan… and also by cutting first class Philippine trees along the mountains buffer zone…Yes, all in the name of development and progress!

But the people of San Isidro fought against the lure of mining money… we fought against the temptation to cut our trees along the buffer zones of the mountain for progress sake!

Foe we, the people of San Isidro, know what we want for San Isidro’s future…

San Isidro does not want to disturb Mother Nature. We found doors and will continue finding doors… that will lead to a San Isidro that will contribute to sustain our contribution in conserving our legacy to the world… and for all the generations to come.

After 49 years, my personal love affair with Mt. Hamiguitan bore fruit and gave birth last June 23, 2014 upon its inscription by UNESCO as the country’s 6th World Heritage Site, Wildlife Sanctuary Category at Doha, Qatar.

I am grateful to the people who believed in us, the people of San Isidro… who showed concern for San Isidro’s forest. To Vice President Noli de Castro, whose program Magandang Gabi Bayan in 1998 showed to the world first photos of what’s inside Mt. Hamiguitan. It was his crew who went up there

HE Department of Energy (DOE) in partnership with the City Government of Tagum conducted an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on The Downstream Oil Industry, on June 27, 2014 at Molave Hotel, Tagum City.

The one-day event was primarily aimed at enhancing the level of awareness of the industry stakeholders, consumers and other concerned agencies on the pertinent government agencies rules and regulations, safety and standards including concerns that currently confronting the oil industry.

The topic discussed during the forum includes the Overview of the Downstream Oil Industry, LPG Cylinder

Standards, Household LPG Rules and Regulations and Consumer Safety Tips, Liquid Petroleum (LPP) Retail Rules and Consumer Tips, LPG in Butane Canisters, and ended with an Open Forum.

DOE Undersecretary Donato D. Marcos said in his message that this campaign will elevate social awareness to give ethical standard to consumers and dealers and also enjoins them to sustain the information and interaction in this field of industry.

Close to 200 persons attended which came from different sectors of oil industry and businessmen from Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental and other LGUs from the different provinces.

Smart developer evangelist Paul Pajo addressed an audience of Asian and European developers at the GSMA’s Mobile Asia Expo and said that they could localize their apps for the Philippines’ 100-million strong English-speaking market.

TRTA 3 embodies the long-standing partnership between the Philippine Government and the European Union for promoting trade as key to poverty reduction and inclusive growth. As one of the project components, the NQI serves to be the interconnected and harmonized strategy for standards, testing, certification, accreditation and

metrology that is directed towards the integration of the Philippines’ industries in world trade. The NQI Platform is being organized through a convergence of National Government Agencies that also include the Department of Health-Food and Drug Administration (DOHFDA), the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) together with private sector organizations.

This workshop in Davao has been preceded by similar trainings held in Manila and Cebu.

More capacity building exercises will be provided by the TRTA Project 3 to contribute to the Philippines’ integration into the international and regional trading and investment system.

Oil prices down in Asian trade

IL prices eased in Asia Monday, June 30 on softer US demand, but tensions in the Middle East where jihadists have declared an Islamic state straddling Iraq and Syria will likely keep prices high, analysts said.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August delivery was down 26 cents at $105.48 a barrel in late-morning trade and Brent crude dropped 22 cents to $113.08.

Analysts said investors are concerned after data last week showed that consumer spending in the United States, the world’s biggest economy, rose by a mere 0.2% in May after flattening in April.

US jobless claims, another barometer for the giant American economy, totaled 312,000 in the week ending June 21, down just 2,000 from the week before.

Barista organizer says drinking coffee can keep one healthy

ERE’S a new beat to the health-conscious: drinking three to four cups of coffee a day keeps the doctor away.

Yes, that steaming, hot cup of flavorful and aromatic brew has very beneficial effects that include the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver cirrhosis, type 2 diabetes and even cancer.

Leo de Leon, president of Allegro Beverage, distributor of coffee products and equipment, revealed the benefits of drinking coffee and the high-revenue potential of engaging in coffee business.

Guesting in the FAST Fridays media forum held at Archipelago 7107 (Barrio Fiesta) at SM Lanang Premier, De Leon gave a few reasons why it would be wise to get into the coffee business.

“First of all, it’s very popular. In this mall alone there are about six coffee shops. Other than that, it’s addictive and habit forming without being illegal nor harmful to your health, it has good effects on your metabolism and it’s an antioxidant, and it’s very, very profitable.”

De Leon revealed that coffee has been around for

centuries and it is the second most sought after commodity in the world. The coffee industry is then very promising and it’s proven by the fact that coffee has been consumed for centuries now. Coffee is not a fad that’s going to go away anytime soon.

“Unlike alcoholic beverages, coffee doesn’t come with a warning that says that it may be hazardous to your health even though it may be addictive. Just take it in moderation.”

De Leon admitted that coffee is addictive and habit forming but the benefits of drinking coffee is that it will not affect one’s health when taken in tolerable amounts.

Coffee also is a very profitable commodity. De Leon said that for every cup of coffee people buy for a hundred pesos, the cost of capital is around P15.

“Mura lang ang puhunan diyan. Wala pa yang refills and there’s also no table service. Talagang it’s very profitable,” he said.

Mindanao supplies a large amount of the coffee in the Philippines. Among these rare varieties is the Civet coffee produced from the feces of Civet cats. Sold at around 100 dollars for 100 grams, Civet coffee is

one of the world’s most famous types of coffee.

Though the Civet coffee industry in the Philippines has a limited future because the Civet cats need to be in the wild for them to be able to really pick the best cherries off the coffee trees instead of being captive in farms because it just doesn’t work, the outcomes are different.

The Philippines is capable of producing around 20 thousand metric tons while the demand is at 100 thousand metric tons.

It’s a good decision to get into the coffee business because the world’s commodities have gone up by about 50 percent because of the drought in Brazil.

It may take 5 years for coffee to grow commercial-

ly but once you’re harvesting commercially, you’re already earning. De Leon says he hopes that the government will encourage more farmers to grow coffee.

Deadly bridge

T

HERE’S a very famous bridge that had killed more than a thousand desperate people who jumped to their deaths from the span. It is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge which has commanding views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Aside from being a favorite place of millions of tourists who visit California every year, it had been the destination of people seeking to end their lives.

A recent dispatch by the Associated Press indicated that since the bridge opened in 1937, or 77 years ago, a total of 1,400 people have plunged to their deaths, including 46 suicides last year alone.

However, Americans were euphoric last week, when bridge officials approved a $76-million funding package for the construction of a suicide barrier system. The bridge district board of directors voted unanimously to fund a steel suicide net that will hopefully prevent people from jumping to their deaths.

The vote made many Americans shed tears, including board member and former bridge district director John Moylan, whose grandson, Sean Moylan, jumped off

We are talking about the Golden Gate Bridge only.

What about other bridges in the world, particularly in countries where the suicide rates are very high, even much higher than the U.S.?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States ranks only 33rd in suicides of various kinds with an average of 12 suicides per 100,000 people per year. Topping the list is Greenland where an average of 83 people per population of 100,000 committed suicide in 2011.

Next to Greenland, the other suicide-prone nations are Lithuania, South Korea, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Poland, China, Slovenia, Hungary, and Japan in that order.

Mercifully, the Philippines only ranks 90th among 110 countries, either because Filipinos are a happy people, or they simply love life very much, no matter what.

Daunting task

T

ERRORIST THREAT– Security measures have been stepped up in Mindanao, especially in Davao City, because of a possible terrorist attack. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte voiced his concern over the report which prompted law enforcement agencies to issue a “red alert” status. The military and police units likewise tightened security in all entry points of the city.

Public areas, entertainment centers, shopping malls, schools, parks, airports, sea and land transport terminals may be the more vulnerable targets. How easy it is to walk over to these “soft targets” teeming with people. The explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) the previous year in a popular recreation complex in Cagayan de Oro is one grim reminder of how a terroristic activity can disrupt life in a city known for being peaceful and orderly.

The CDO explosion that killed eight innocent civilians and injured many more was simply cruel. The terrorist, possibly accompanied by a lookout left a backpack loaded with explosives fitted with rudimentary timer and simply walked away – and the unexpected happened.

The bad news is that “soft spots” are easy targets even for ordinary criminals. What make these places useful and functional is what make them devilishly hard to secure: high volume of people, many doors and exits, and lax security procedures. This is really worrisome is that barely two weeks after the CDO incident, another incident believed to be a car bomb explosion rocked a commercial area in Cotabato City killing another eight people and maiming 30 others.

Police probers investigating both bombings are facing a blank wall. Government forensic experts and intelligence agents were picking through the rubbles and smoldering ruins for clues, but up to now the perpetrators and the motives are still unknown – either part of a terrorist network or perhaps a local clone. But because public places were the targets, intelligence agents are looking hard at other angles. There is also a possibility that the recent bombings have something to do either with politics or personal grudge. After the CDO and Cotabato bombings, another explosion rocked a commercial area in Midsayap, North Cotabato followed by simultaneous bombings of two cinemas in Davao City. There were no injuries in those two incidents and experts suspect it was only meant to instill fear in minds of the public.

What’s more, the previous bombings came in the midst of a global security alert issued by the U.S. government which closed their embassies and consulate offices particularly in the Middle East and some parts of Asia including the Philippines for a time. Are we going to presume that the series previous of bombings and possible new terrorist threat have something to do with the US warning? Or is

there really a terrorist threat and how accurate is the intelligence and surveillance network of our authorities? It appears that offenders can hit anyone anytime and the threat to the US and its allies is real. And global.

For the nth time Islamic extremists have explicitly warned U.S. allies, governments of Asian nations, including the Philippines. against sending troops to help the U.S.’s rebuilding and polishing efforts in some war-torn Arab countries making them potential targets for anti-US jihadists. Some people say it is virtually impossible to really secure public places. That’s wrong. Our police and military, and intelligence network should do their best and never to give up.

The Philippines is among the Asian nations plagued with insurgents and extremist groups like the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah that are known to be linked with the Al-Qaeda terror group.

For extremists who have no qualms about killing a large number of innocent people, public places offer an ideal venue.

However, security experts worry that the current taste of terrorists for soft targets might be intended to divert attention. Terrorist threat is a dilemma for countries rich and poor. In the Philippines for example, keeping a million people safe every day in public places is a nightmare to our peace and security officials and intelligence specialists. It’s a daunting task authorities cannot do without the support and cooperation of the people. In the light of the previous bombing incidents, assurances from authorities seem frighteningly unconvincing.

Abolish pork barrel system

LMOST a year has passed when the Napoles pork barrel scam was exposed and the twin calls for the abolition of the pork barrel system and the full accountability of all those involved reverberated across the country.

We are indignant that until now, the graft ridden pork barrel system remains intact while only select members of the opposition are being prosecuted. Malacanang must bring everything out into the open, expose all, as it is now being accused of massive cover up of high administration official and allies linked to the scam.

Despite its ruling on the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), the Supreme Court has failed to abolish the pork barrel system. Congress has created a new mechanism for handing out pork to its members via a discreet referral and recommendation system even as it has kept intact the President’s gargantuan pork barrel funds, including the P132 Billion Malampaya fund, the President’s Social Fund and the P449 billion Special Purpose Fund. Meanwhile the Court is dragging its feet on the petitions against Pres. Aquino’s and Budget Sec. Abad’s Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).

The President, Congress and the Supreme Court have failed the people. It is time for the people to take matters into

their own hands and abolish the pork barrel system themselves.

Today we formally announce the creation of the People’s Initiative Against the Pork Barrel (PIAP) that will be bringing the anti-pork barrel struggle to a new arena – a people’s initiative to abolish the pork barrel system.

We maintain that the pork barrel system -- whereby the spending of billions of lump sum, public funds are delegated to the President, individual legislators or any other public officer is a major source of corruption and political patronage.

This corrupt system is an undue delegation of Congress’ power to appropriate public funds that undermines the system of checks and balances and is anathema to the principles of transparency and accountability.

We have jointly come up with a proposed bill to abolish the presidential and congressional pork barrel; prohibit lump sum, discretionary appropriations; and penalize violators. We are in the process of reaching out and forging unities with all forces, groups and individuals to build the broadest possible unity for this people’s initiative.

Today we formally announce the formation of the People’s Initiative Against the Pork Barrel (PIAP), a national coalition of various groups and individuals.

We will be bringing the anti-pork barrel struggle to a new arena – a people’s initiative to abolish the pork barrel system – as we vow to continue and escalate protest actions against this corrupt and unjust system.

The reasons for holding the people’s initiative are the following: 1. The pork barrel system remains intact which according to one study amounts to P932B. 2.

There is a need for a law that will directly criminalize those who enact lump sum discretionary funds and are involve in any way with creating and dispensing pork barrel.

3. There is a need for a law that will require line item budgeting, transparency and accountability and auditing procedures to make it difficult to steal people’s money.

In this light, we are pleased to announce that we will be holding a People›s Congress on August 23, 2014 in Cebu City. The People’s Congress will finalize and approve the people›s initiative bill and serve as the official launch of this nationwide education and signature-gathering campaign to abolish the pork barrel system.

IKE the country’s little boys and girls who need protection from child abuse, men and women in their senior age or twilight years also have to be protected from maltreatment by others.

Sad to say, there seems to be no adequate laws or policies that will protect older persons from institutional, community and domestic abuse and violence during these fast changing times as can be gleaned from the views expressed by various groups during a Forum on Elder Abuse held two weeks ago in Quezon City.

In essence, the need for bolder steps toward the prevention of neglect and abuse among elderly persons was underscored during the forum attended by representatives from various sectors of the society at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Bldg. along Visayas Ave. It was facilitated through the partnership of the PIA, the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHRP), Coalition of Services for the Elderly Inc. (COSE), and Confederation of Older Persons’ Associations of the Philippines (COPAP).

In his speech, PIA Director-General Jose Mari M. Oquinena said the forum was a venue for the elderly to express their concerns about the existing reality that many senior citizens are experiencing abuse and neglect which should not be ignored.

According to him, it was their way of expressing support to the advocacy that will promote the welfare and protection of the elders against any form of maltreatment that they should not experience in their twilight years.

“A nation that does not take care of its elders loses its soul and will not find its way to the future. Let us be a better generation that supports their welfare, for one day, we will all cross the path where they are right now,” he stressed.

Oquinena said “these elders who are more matured than us..., who shared with us their wisdom at some point in time, can become ‘angels’ that will watch over us one day when we die, if we will also be like ‘angels’ to them now by taking care of their ‘rights’ which are being violated whenever they are being neglected, abused or maltreated.”

The forum participants noted the sad reality that there are elderly people who are suffering from abuse and choosing to keep it to themselves is undoubtedly happening in Philippine society for a long time.

According to Fransiskus Kupang, executive director of the Coalition of Services of the Elderly (COSE), the existence of elderly abuse is clearly happening and yet only a few are being publicized and voiced out.

“Most elders are afraid to come out or just hide in silence because the perpetrators itself are within their family circle. They fear that their privacy will be lost,” Kupang said in an interview with the Philippines News Agency (PNA).

Kupang noted that elderly abuse is the gravest experience that the elders suffer and yet many refuse to reveal or talk about their plight for reasons that they do not want to divulge to the public the sad fact that more often, the perpetrators are either their very own spouses, children, grandchildren and other people taking care of them due to their old age.< Dr. Deana Santos-Ringor, a Health Director of Bantay Matanda Inc., an organization geared toward the welfare of the elderly, cited that there are reasons why most elders refuse to report or there is under-reporting of the abuse.

Facebook manipulated users’ ‘emotions’ in study A

STUDY detailing how Facebook secretly manipulated the news feed of some 700,000 users to study “emotional contagion” has prompted anger on social media.

For one week in 2012 Facebook tampered with the algorithm used to place posts into user news feeds to study how this affected their mood.

The study, conducted by researchers affiliated with Facebook, Cornell University, and the University of California at San Francisco, appeared in the June 17 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (http://www.pnas.org/ content/111/24/8788. full.pdf).

The researchers wanted to see if the number of positive, or negative, words in messages they read affected whether users then posted positive or negative content in their status updates.

Indeed, after the exposure the manipulated users began to use negative or positive words in their updates depending on what

they were exposed to.

Results of the study spread when the online magazine Slate and The Atlantic website wrote about it on Saturday.

“Emotional states can be transferred to others via emotional contagion, leading people to experience the same emotions without their awareness,” the study authors wrote.

“These results indicate that emotions expressed by others on Facebook influence our own emotions, constituting experimental evidence for massive-scale contagion via social networks.”

While other studies have used metadata to study trends, this appears to be unique because it manipulates the data to see if there is a reaction.

OVERTIME, must-see suspense movie of the year GMA Films is geared up in taking movie-goers on the edge of their seats with OVERTIME, a suspense movie starring Richard Gutierrez and Lauren Young.

According to GMA Films president Atty. Annette Gozon-Abrogar, the audience can expect something new in this suspense movie because it has a fresh and young approach. “The story centers on the two leads (Richard and Lauren) and it brings the audience on a fast-paced, cat-and-mouse chase. The directors infused a different approach in storytelling.”

She also added that the vision and inspiration in making a suspense film like Overtime is that GMA Films wants to start producing films with a new feel using exciting and upcoming directors and filmmakers.

“We believe that the Filipino movie audience has embraced these types of films and we want to support the new creative blood as well.”

AVAO City Councilor Jimmy Dureza thanked world-renowned evangelist Pastor Apollo Quiboloy for leading the revival of professional boxing in Davao by staging the initial boxing promotion of his Sonshine Sports Management Inc. last Saturday night at the Almendras gym.

“This is a very good move of Pastor Quiboloy. We really need this one to help revive boxing here in Davao,” said Dureza after watching the

fights together with his golfing buddies, who also paid the VIP tickets, each worth P5,000.

Dureza was also requested by City Mayor Rody Duterte to represent him atop the ring during The Boxing Revolution I last Saturday night at the Almendras gym to award the golden belt to the new ABF bantamweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro of the Philippines, who stopped Indonesian Ichbal Tobida in the 5th round via a technical knockout.

OWERHOUSE Barangay Una-Panabo City boxing team of Congressman Anton Lagdameo will not be fielding a team in the PLDT-ABAP National Championships slated on July 1-7 at the Digos City Gymnasium.

“We don’t have a team.

Bosh follows James, Wade to free agency A

LL-STAR center Chris Bosh informed the Miami Heat on Sunday that he will exercise an early termination clause in his contract, following teammates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade into free agency.

IO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Regulation time doesn’t seem to mean much at this stage, judging by the way Netherlands, Costa Rica and Brazil have advanced through the first of the World Cup knockout rounds.

The Dutch needed a penalty deep in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 comeback win over Mexico and advance to a match against a Costa Rica lineup that beat Greece on penalties later Sunday to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. The Costa Ricans had to play for almost an hour with 10 men, and just had the legs to win 5-3 on penalties after the match finished level at 1-1 after extra time.

That was the second penalty shootout of the weekend, following Brazil’s narrow win over Chile on Saturday.
