HIGHER POWER BILLS DLPC explains reasons for increase in monthly bill

WITh the disturbing brownouts, why is our power bill higher?

That is the nagging question thrown by some residents of Davao City after being surprised to find their monthly power bill increase instead of going down with the long rotational brownouts.

Davao Light and Power and Company (DLPC) yesterday explained the cause of the possible increase in consumers’ power bills despite the interrupted consumption due to the rotating brownouts.

DLPC assistant vice president for corporate communications and branding Ross C. Luga admitted that there will be a possible increase in generation charges resulting to increase in power bills with the electric company using expensive sources of power.

According to Luga, there

will be an estimated increase of .45 centavos per kilowatt hour on generation charge for the month of May since this month has the longest power interruption and the DLPC took their supply from the fuel-fired power plant which is expensive compared to hydroelectric power.

“A typical customer, ang average sa atong consumers sa residential is 175kwh 175kwh multiplied by .45 centavos... So, comparing May and February mga about P78.75,” Luga explained referring to the possible additional payment on that will appear on their electric bill for this month.

Dads asked to reconsider stand on mining industry

AvAo City councilors are asked to reconsider their stand on mining by taking into account the much needed taxes and employment opportunities that can be gained from the industry, said vicente T. Lao, chair of the Mindanao Business Council.

Together with representatives from the Mindanao Miners Association, he appeared before the committee hearing committee hearing conducted by city council committee on environment and natural resources on the proposed ordinance banning of all mining activities in Davao City except sand and gravel quarrying.

“The city government

does not need to close the avenue for mining in the city,” Lao said, adding that potential areas for mining in the city are located in Marilog and Paquibato district, the areas identified as an agricultural zone under the amended Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP).

Lao said that mining companies nowadays are equipped with technologies that mitigate the destruction of environment, pointed out that mining firms practice and adopt “responsible mining.”

71% of Davao folk unaware if their place is disaster-prone A

T least seven in 10 Davaoenos are not aware if their area is prone to disasters, according to a survey by the Ateneo de Davao University.

The results of the survey administered by the school’s Social Research, Training and Development office were released last week by the University Research Council.

The city-wide survey, conducted from April 9 to 16 on 632 adult respondents, found that despite their experiences with natural disasters, 71% of Davaoenos don’t know if they are living in a disaster risk area.

It said 69% were not worried about environmental catastrophes with 77% having experienced calamities.

Flooding topped the list of

disasters that residents were commonly worried about, followed by earthquakes and storms. Landslides and mudslides were barely considered as concerns, while cyclones and tsunamis were last on the list.

The survey noted that 71% had knowledge and awareness of storms due to the attention given by media especially during typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

As for household preparations for emergencies, most respondents mentioned flashlights and candles, followed by food and water, and listening to news updates on the radio. only 45% are aware of disaster early warning system while 52% claimed they are aware of disaster response

system, 76% are unaware of the emergency evacuation drill, and about a quarter actually attended disaster preparedness training, said the survey.

Nine in 10 respondents strongly agreed that when it comes to climate change that there should be cooperation within local initiatives.

Meanwhile, 82% of the respondents coming from the city’s three districts and 12 sub-districts considered themselves on the poverty line with 26% claiming that their income was not enough for actual daily expenditure.

When asked to project their financial situation in the next three months, 29% of the respondents said they will earn less than what is spent while 49% said they

will earn just about the same amount.

However, 20% of the respondents were optimistic about earning and saving.

Family savings topped the list of the main sources of income (95%) for the participating households, reliance on loans (74%), assistance from private persons and institutions (44%) and reliance on government support (9%).

“The Chinese market is still the biggest market for our Cavendish banana given its large population and growing economy,” he added.

Bright prospect awaits banana industry

RIgHT prospect awaits the players in the local banana industry with the global market price expected to remain high in the coming months.

Ferdinand Y. Marañon, chief-executive officer of Sagrex Corporation, a company involved in exportation of processed cardava banana to United States, Canada and China said that buying price of Cavendish banana in the global market is expected to reach $6 per box in the next two months.

The projected price is higher than the $ 3 last year, a time when the local banana industry in Davao Region was still also reeling from the damage brought by the devastating typhoon Pablo.

“In the past four to five months the price doubled or tripled,” Marañon said, emphasizing that this is the best time for banana growers and processors to intensify their production.

Last month, the buying priced even reached $10 per box but it plunged to $8 this

LoBAL port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc., (ICTSI) will invest P8 billion for the development of a 10.3-hectare Hijo port located in Barangay Madaum, Tagum City.

Razon has started the construction of the international port this quarter and set to be completed in three years’ time. once operational, it will cater to shipments from and to Australia.

It was earlier reported that that during the company’s recent stakeholder’s meeting, ICTSI plans to transform the dilapidated port into country’s second largest container port, next to Manila International

Container Terminal.

ICTSI’s P8-billion investment is the biggest to enter the region during the first quarter this year. other investments only totaled around P1 billion mostly poured in for housing development and plantation expansion of banana companies.

Last year, BoI-Davao recorded P31-billion worth of investments.

“The bulk of last year’s investments are into power,” he said. These include the 300MW Aboitiz-owned coal fired powerplant in Toril and the 600MW coal-fired power plant of San Miguel Corporation in Malita, Davao del Sur. Both projects are expected to operational on or before 2016.

Dureza expressed optimism that that the region will surpass last year’s total investments.

F the government will return to power generation it won’t solve the brownouts happening particularly in Mindanao.

This according to energy Secretary Jericho Petilla during the inauguration of the 14-megawatt Tudaya Hydropower Plant in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur held yesterday.

Petilla said that building a power generating plant takes about four years or longer. If ever government decides to go back to building power plants it won’t solve the ongoing problem.

He said that additional power plants will go online by 2015, this will include the 300 Megawatt Aboitiz Coal Plant in Davao.

Petilla admitted that there is a great pressure for the gov-

ernment to return to power generation. electric Power Industry Reform Act (ePIRA) signed into law in 2001, prohibited the government from engaging in power generation.

Currently the Mindanao grid has a system deficiency of 232 megawatts (as of May 13, 2014), which results to hours of rotating brownouts in many places in the region.

Petilla said they are moving heaven and earth to extract power from different sources but the problem is the lack of power generation facilities.

“We want the city to put in place programs that will prevent malnutrition among children, instead of merely treating them,” villafuerte added.

DOLE to set-up Regional Skills map e

ASY location and quick job matching of skilled workers and professionals can be done once the regional skills map is established.

This is the aim of the Department of Labor and employment in Davao Region as it starts to put up the Davao Regional Skills Map, another innovative facility to hasten matching of employers and jobseekers in every barangay across Davao region.

“With this virtual mapping of skills, we can easily locate and identify the number of carpenters, plumbers, other skilled workers, and professionals in the respective barangay and link them with employers looking for specific skills among the manpower supply,” said DoLe-Davao regional director Joffrey M. Suyao.

The project is part of the DoLe’s National Skills Registry project (NSRS) a system aimed to create a roster of jobseekers and their skills and competence.

Davao region is now on its fifth and last wave of launching the SRS programwhich started in 2011 in Davao City.

The towns covered in the fifth wave included: Montevista and Compostela valley in Comval Province; Sarangani, Kiblawan, Sulop, Magsaysay and Jose Abad Santos in Davao del Sur; Caraga, Banay-Banay, and Cateel in Davao oriental and New Corella, Talaingod and San Isidro in Davao del Norte.

A complete set of desktop computer, printer scanner and NSRS forms were given to support the registration of jobseekers in the municipality. “once the system is established, we can assist jobseekers in finding possible job placement. This could also aid the planning and decisionmaking of local chief executives since the system could provide relevant data as to skills availability and training needs in the respective areas,” Suyao said. “ In close coordination with the PeSo, we will send job vacancies from major cities to LgUs (Local government units) so that based on the registry they could refer employment opportunities to their constituents,” Suyao added.

Security Bank posts 17% growth in 1Q, net income at P 1.43 billion

oR Immediate Release. Security Bank Corporation (PSe: SeCB) earned Php 1.43 billion in net income, representing 17% year-on-year growth. This was driven by 42% year-on-year growth in net interest income to Php 2.8 billion, which was anchored on the expansion in loans and investment securities. Net interest margin improved to 3.54% in Q12014, up quarter-on-quarter from 3.33% in Q4-2013 and slightly up from 3.49% average in 2013.

Non-interest income contributed Php 790 million.

Fees and commissions was at Php 361 million, up 11% quarter-on-quarter. Trading gains was Php 320 million in Q1-2014.

Security Bank’s total operating income increased by 17% year-on-year while operating cost (excluding provisions for credit losses and impairments), grew by 4.1%. Pre-provision-and-impairment income was at Php 1.84 billion, representing 32% year-on-year increase.

The Bank made Php 133 million in credit provisions.

The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio was at 0.06% in Q1-2014, down from 0.11% at year-end 2013, which is among the lowest in the banking industry. NPL reserve cover was at 198% in Q1-2014, up from 195% at year-end 2013, which is

among the highest in the industry.

Security Bank’s total resources increased by 46% year-on-year to Php 377 billion as of March 31, 2014. Loans grew by 39% year-on-year while deposits increased by 49%. The loan-to-deposit ratio is at 78.8%. The investment securities portfolio increased by 132% year-on-year and 57% quarter-on-quarter.

The Bank’s return on shareholders’ equity was at 13.8% and the return on assets was at 1.6% in Q1-2014.

Globe Telecom sustains robust growth in 1Q; posts 9% rise in core net profit g

LoBe Telecom sustained robust growth in the first quarter of the year, delivering a core net profit expansion of 9% to P3.4 billion from P3.1 billion a year earlier, driven by strong performance of its business segments.

Consolidated service revenues of the telecommunications provider reached P23.2 billion in the first three months of the year, representing a 9% increase from the P21.4 billion in the same period of last year. Solid revenue gains were driven by strong contributions across all business segments given the growth in both mobile and broadband customer bases, the sustained demand for data connectivity and the introduction of market-relevant promotions during the quarter.

Business group to power firms: Follow schedules of brownouts P

oWeR utilities should stick to their posted schedules of power interruptions to prevent further losses on the part of employers, the Philippine exporters Confederation (Philexport) said.

In an interview Monday at ”Kapehan sa Dabaw” at SM City Davao Annex, Philexport president Ferdinand Maranon said their members have complained that the power interruptions have not been followed.

These have resulted in higher production costs as their workers have been asked to report at a certain time but do not get to work, he said.

Maranon said that his frozen banana export business itself is directly affected by the rotating brownouts, as the microwavable products require refrigeration along the production process.

His clients come from as far as the United States, Australia and Canada.

So far, he said there have not yet been reports of clients backing out from export products that have been delayed because of power interruptions.

“I hope they stick to a regular schedule, even if it takes

eight hours. The businesses are being affected,” he said.

Maranon said their members could already have incurred losses of at least P1 million from the rotating brownouts. “I hope this changes soon,” he added.

The Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) in a statement said there were no rotating power interruptions during off-peak hours (12 midnight to 8am) from May 8 to 10.

This was due to the increased power supply allocation from National Power Corporation as one unit of the Steag coal plant was successfully put back online, adding 105 megawatts to the grid, the statement said.

DLPC also maximized other available power supply, such as those from Hedcor Sibulan and Talomo Hydropower plants and TMI and Bajada Power plants.

DLPC attributed the changing power interruption schedules to deteriorating power supply and its “very volatile behavior.”

DLPC said it was “not in the position to implement this” as it is only a distribution utility, with the government being tasked to invest in alternative energy sources.

He latest collection performance of Davao City Treasurer Rodrigo S. Riola and his team in so far as the real property taxes are concerned has impressed Councilor Danilo C. Dayanghirang, chairman of the City Council Committee on Finance, Ways and Means and Appropriations.

Councilor Dayanghirang learned during a meeting with Treasurer Riola last Monday that the City Treasurer’s office (CTo) collected a total of P560.4 million in real property tax (RPT) in the first quarter (January to March 2014). This is equivalent to 88 percent of the total collectable RPT for the year 2014. To be able to collect 88 percent of the whole year’s target in the first three months is indeed a remarkable achievement.

Riola’s collection record assumes added significance because lately, he declared his intention to retire, but this was rejected by Mayor Duterte who wants him to continue serving the city. This was taken to mean that Riola still enjoys the confidence of the mayor. This despite the recent tirade that he had received from certain city councilors, who claimed that he (Riola) was underperforming. The accusation seems to be a dud, when one considers his impressive RPT record in the first quarter of 2014.

Happy Despite Brownouts

N this season of rotational brownouts and frayed patience, it is difficult to hurdle daily life with equanimity.The Facebook account of Davao Light shows various expressions of annoyance and disgust. When it was posted onlline that no rotating brownouts were implemented from May 8-10, netizens also expressed appreciation though with the awareness that this was just a respite from the ongoing energy crisis. A comment I found especially amusing was by someone who said that Davao Light cannot even stick to the schedules of rotating brownouts they themselves made, how much more run a multimillion power company. This article is, however, not about the failings of our energy provider, but about how we are reacting in times of such inconvenient power outages.

I was reminded of Akira Kurosawa’s movie, Dreams, when the brownouts began. The last part of the movie was about a village of the watermills where the people forsook the polluting influence of modern technology and decided to live with the bare essentials in nature. The people were able to build thriving lives despite the absence of electricity. I wonder if we can do that what with all our attachments to gadgets and conveniences. I was especially disturbed when kids were complaining to their mom that they were bored

because they had no internet connection.

What happened to a summer of playing on the streets, reading, or just plain hanging out with friends?

I believe that only boring people get bored; and when children get bored easily because of the absence of electricity, then something is truly amiss. Are we cultivating citizens that find meaning from being connected online to the detriment of personal relationships? A school administrator commented that one good thing about these brownouts is that people are forced to have face-to-face chats without the interference of gadgets.

Many businesses are losing revenues.

It is reported that Php30M per hour is lost in Mindanao as a result of the daily power outages. This is the harsh reality of brownouts. This is the economic side of things.

More than that, there is a need to look into ourselves and our lifestyles. Can we still lead and live meaningful happy lives without electricity? It will be very difficult

for most as can be seen from the thread of comments on Davao Light’s Facebook account. Do we still consume uncaringly because we think that what we do does not really matter in the larger scheme of things? Insider information from the Korean community here in Davao reveals anxiety about the looming power shortage. They know that the local government will be hard-pressed to address the crisis.

They are, thus, taking matters into their own hands by securing the arrival of high quality Korean generators and alternative sources of power. They have to take care of their own if their host country cannot.

I used to think that brownouts were a great equalizer. Not anymore. once again, economics comes into play. Those who can, buy generators. Those who cannot, make do. It sucks if you have to make do but let this not suck joy out of life. To those who can buy generators, please do not post pictures of your new generators on Facebook and brag about it. It is tacky and tasteless, even if you buy a branded one and not the cheaper China model.on a lighter note, there is this generator model which is named eU10i. It sounds kinky especially if you punctuate it with the “ay” at the end. This is how we can still laugh during brownouts. Perhaps we can enjoy the power outages for a while and do our own eU10i.

Not surprisingly, in recent surveys the President’s popularity and net performance ratings have plateaued, and might be on the decline. But the President shrugged off the bleak reports and repeated over and over again during media interviews that his leadership is still on track. The question is: where is the track leading?

Despite the President’s vehement denials, there is a continuing public perception that his is losing a tight grip on the presidency. No one, of course, said being the President of the country would be easy – though he has at times made it look so. Political analysts and persistent critics are one in their observation that what President Aquino was guilty of may simply be political inexperience and ineptitude.

Small wonder that he has committed a string of political and diplomatic faux pas that have eroded his popularity during the past few months. The President has likewise taken a large measure of blame for the slip-up. Most damaging for the President, a self-declared corruption fighter were the incomparable financial scandals – PDAF and DAF scams

involving not only some members of the opposition but also several of his aides and party mates.

The string of corruption charges spark the first hints by opposition lawmakers that the fund scams would serve as “pain in the neck” for the President, and give his would-be anointed bet a slim chance of winning in the 2016 presidential elections. Moreover, the flurry of financial scandals would intensify uncertainty surrounding the 2016 national polls seen as crucial to restoring some credibility and stability to the Aquino administration.

Nonetheless, the President’s loyal supporters and party mates are blaming the whole mess on what they see as a cynical maneuver by power-obsessed political opponents. Many others notably those who still have faith in the present dispensation shared that sentiment. But the opposition group is quick enough to retaliate stating that the President is culpable for the partisan hostility that has putrefied the country’s political system.

There are pretty heavy issues needed to be address posthaste, but crucial socio-economic measures have been relegated to the backburner by the legislature because it is in political infighting and the PDAF controversies where all their energies go. Faced with mounting criticism over the financial scandals and other interlocking problems, it would be easy to conclude that the series of unpleasant events would eventually bump off the presidential bid of President Aquino’s chosen predecessor.

Large measure of blame

HoRT PoLITICAL TRICKLe – The bureaucracy must focus on its core functions and do them well to be able to do more with less exertion. We want a government that is efficient and cost-effective in the performance of its functions and the delivery of its services.

Having a clean, honest and efficient government provides a society of opportunity rather than dependency.

We must therefore ignite in each individual a sense of personal responsibility for the development of the country – giving them the opportunity to excel in every endeavor, taking pride in their productivity and capacity to contribute to national prosperity and returning to them their identity as Filipinos.

FINANCIAL SCANDALS INTeNSIFY PoLITICAL UNCeRTAINTY – New problems and new controversies continue to brew, and the Aquino administration is under constant pressure. A frowning President Benigno Aquino III would not look out of place accompanying a summary of the country’s current state of affairs.

Crime seems to be increasing at accelerating pace despite claims by police authorities and other law officials to the contrary. Public anger stemmed in part from the fact that delivery of basic social services is too slow. Unemployment rate continues to rise while the shelter program is nowhere near adequate.

There is certainly plenty of reason for the masses of our people to howl protests actions: widespread corruption and rampant smuggling continue unabated, food shortage led to rising pric-

oR Japan, staying in lockstep with the Americans on the east China Sea is important. When it comes to Russia, however, it’s highly problematic. Abe has put considerable effort into repairing ties with Russia; since taking office in December 2012, he’s met with President vladimir Putin five times. He’s made significant advances in mending territorial spats and normalizing their bilateral relationship. But when Tokyo unveiled new sanctions against Russia in April, Abe puts these gains at risk. of course, it’s hard for Japan to say no to the Americans directly — and it needn’t do so. Instead, Japan should work closely with european allies to push obama to ease the pace and extent of new sanctions. The fallout between the West and Russia will make Russia look east economically, with China set to benefit most. Japan has a real opportunity with an eastward-facing Russia and needs to maintain it.

There is another avenue for Japan-eU coordination: wrapping up a broad trade agreement that would encompass roughly one-third of the global economy. on Monday, Japan and the eU agreed to complete the agreement by 2015.

As India wraps up the largest democratic election in world history, Narendra Modi’s likely victory will offer Japan a new opportunity. Modi will have a mandate to use partnerships with advanced industrial democracies to build support for internal market reform. To Japan, India is a sound choice for a partner because the South Asian giant is sufficiently ruffled by China’s rise, and too big to get sucked into China’s orbit. over the last five years, trade between Japan and India increased 80 percent. But it still stands at a meager $18 billion — compared with China-India’s $67 billion and China-Japan’s $334 billion in 2012 — allowing a lot of room for expansion.

5. Pursue U.S.- tied multilateral strategies.

Tokyo must push forward with the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, even if sectors like agriculture will fight to protect themselves from tariff cuts on imports. Passage would lead to hundreds of billions of dollars of economic gains for the 12 participating countries, through liberalizing tariff and non-tariff barriers.

A successful TPP deal could lead to better Chinese trade behavior over time: rather than shutting the door to China, TPP members could encourage Beijing to adopt certain rules and norms — like heightened rule of law to protect foreign corporations’ interests or intellectual property in China — in order to gain entry.

Japan should also go one step further, and start laying the groundwork for a deal with the U.S. and its Asian neighbors that revolves around security instead of trade.

A multilateral security agreement could set rules of the road for maritime conflicts and territorial spats in the east and South China Seas; it would put regional players’ mutual anxiety with a rising China to good use.

But it’s critical that Japan, the U.S., and their Asian allies leave the door open for China to join if it changes its tune. Why would China ever join a security pact organized in response to its rise? over time, China will have more exposure to turmoil in the Middle east. That’s because the Chinese are becoming more reliant on Middle eastern energy, even as America weans off of it. We could see a “security swap” take place: in return for playing a security role in the gulf, the United States would beseech China to adhere to ground rules for more stable behavior in Asia Pacific. That would help Tokyo — and the global economy more broadly.

But, Luga clarified that the increase did not come from DLPC but passed on from their supplier.

ang atong supply from 280 nahimo na lang 180. Diha dayon nawad-an tag 100MW na supply,” he explained.

He further explained that on April 29 the supply given by NPC to DLPC is only 120MW. This time the DLPC implemented a four-hour power outage during peak hours and one hour on the off peak.

Last May 7, the supply of NPC was again reduced to 102MW forcing DLPC to implement another hour of power outage during the off peak hours.

In a related statement, DLPC explained that there are two factors affecting the electricity bill. “one is the amount of energy consumed and the other is the electricity rate. The electricity rate is made up of three main components i.e. generation rate, transmission rate and distribution rate,” the statement said.

According to the state-

ment, the energy consumption should be compared first and the number of days covering the electricity bill should be considered since there are months with 28/29 days, 30 days or 31 days. Another way to measure if there is an increase in energy consumption is to compare the averages or daily energy consumption (dividing the energy consumption for the month with its corresponding number of days).

“The normal tendency when hit with rotational brownouts is for the energy consumption to go down but it is not always the case since some might use electricity more during the periods when it is available to compensate or to do the activities they have not done or completed because of the brownouts,” the statement explained.

Transmission and distribution rates, according to the DLPC statement, do not change very often and usually

remain relatively constant for about a year. The generation rate changes correspondingly to the change in the generation mix. generation mix is the mixture of the different rates of power.

“Distribution utilities’ revenue is driven by the energy consumption of their customers. It doesn’t make sense then for distribution utilities to resort to brownouts as a way to increase distribution rates when the adverse effect of brownouts is the slowing down of economic activities which can lead, most likely, to negative growth,” DLPC said.

“If we can develop this by the end of the year, there’s no doubt that the Agusan Mill, with their P500 million investments on the development of milling plant, will enter the province,” Laborado said.

Dureza said the BoI has yet to set the target amount of investments for 2014 but added that they are now serving two to three foreign investors per week.

He House of Representatives approved, on Third Reading, House Bill No. 577 which seeks to establish the Land Transportation office of Compostela valley Province, during its plenary session on May 12, 2014.

The proposed measure is principally authored by Rep. Maria Carmen Zamora of the first district of Compostela valley Province.

“This is truly a timely approval. For the longest time, our LTo sub-office in Nabunturan has been serving the needs of our motoring public, with minimal support and great budgetary difficulties. With a regular Land Transportation office for the province, Comvaleños’ can look forward to greater convenience and better facilities in the acquisition of driver’s licenses, registration of motor vehicles and other transport-re-

lated services. The new and hopefully expanded office is expected to have increased operations to curb illegal activities concerning the conveyance, transfer, sale or possession of motor vehicles,” said Rep. Zamora.

This bill was actually also passed by the House of Representatives on 3rd Reading during the 15th Congress, but it was not acted upon by the Senate due to time constraints.

“With the bill’s early passage and approval in the House, we expect that there will now be ample time for our colleagues at the Senate to deliberate upon, and approve the measure so that it will finally see enactment into law,” added the Representative.

The House has recommended the immediate transmission of HB No. 577 to the Senate for its consideration.

Dr. Zenaida Hadji RaofLaidan, DoST Region 12 director, said the initiative will mainly highlight the 2014 Regional Invention Contest and exhibit (RICe), which is slated on May 27 to 28 at the Phela grande Convention Center here.

She said the activity will feature scientific and technological innovations developed by inventors, manufacturers, researchers and other concerned enthusiasts within the region.

“There will also be showcases of breakthroughs and inventions from our academic and research and development communities,” Laidan said.

The 2014 RICe, which is supported by the DoST’s Technology Application and Promotion Institute, is an annual competition for amateur and professional inventors who wish to highlight their ingenuity and craft through their research

works and creations.

In Region 12, the competition in the past several years has led to the uncovering of a number of inventions and innovations like machineries and equipment for food processing and agricultural uses.

Also known as Soccsksargen, the region comprises the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of general Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.

Laidan said the upcoming regional showcase will serve as the qualifying round of the National Inventions Contest and exhibits (NICe) that will take place later this year.

Patterned after the national competition, she said the 2014 RICe will focus on six categories: invention, utility model, industrial design, creative research, research for high school students and creative research for college students.

She said the three winners will be declared for each category, with the top selection earning the right to represent the region in the 2014 NICe. [MindaNews]

Celebrating motherhood I

t’s that time of the year once again when mothers take center stage and all families unite in giving thanks to moms across the globe. This year, I not only pay tribute to

my mom (who passed away in 2005), but also everyone around the world. I feel so blessed that I was given this column which celebrates moms and all our beautiful differences and triumphs. I’ve come to know more women and learned from their own challenges and experiences.

From single-moms to mompreneurs, there really is so much to share and understand about the many facets of motherhood. I, for one, consider myself a work in progress and I am happy that I get first hand tips from other experienced moms.

It’s amazing how much motherhood changes one’s life for the better. Things that used to rock your world would later on turn out to be a spec you can shrug off your shoulder.

You’re able to endure all wounds and take in all the cruelties of life, as long as those are thrown only at you and not your child.

Your happiness doesn’t revolve around you anymore neither does it solely depend on anything that’s temporary and tangible.

A simple smile or giggle injects energy into your system, relieving you from momentary worries and troubles. You acquire the heart of a lion, braving all odds just for the safety and comfort of your child.

Motherhood is just as challenging as it is rewarding. As much as anyone would wish that there’s a step by step guide in being a good mother, there really is no perfect formula in becoming one. Each mom has different challenges, different abilities and skills, and certainly different children. Imagine a mom of five, managing five different personalities and temperaments. You’d never know whose needs you have to prioritize first, but moms are able to rise above the endless tantrums and whining and provide all that’s necessary. Motherhood is like a rollercoaster

ride that doesn’t end after a few rounds or when fuel runs out. Your duties and responsibilities go beyond the usual routine… sometimes, even transcending on to family’s the next generation. Day in and day out, mothers face on different surprises on the battlefield, wiping sweat and tears and nurturing the future champions and icons. While there is more to motherhood than what meets the eye, sometimes the beauty of it can get lost in all in all chores, sleepless nights and noise. A mother’s love goes beyond words, and no amount of sweat and tears can put an end to their giving, loving, and caring. to all fellow mothers, I salute you for your hard work, great love, resilience and selflessness. It’s sad that I don’t get to spend and share Mother’s Day with my mom. I am forever grateful to have been raised by such a gracious and selfless one. I can only wish to be half the mother she was, and I am still trying and learning. Motherhood is one of the greatest gifts I’ve been privileged to have, and I am proud to be a mom to one beautiful child who continues to understand and love me immensely despite my shortcomings and flaws. When motherhood gets tough, I try to remember the day it all began, the change it brought and the new experiences and opportunities it presented. I always take a step back and remember that moment when my daughter, tatiana, was born --- the moment when

I’ve come to know the meaning of unconditional love simply by the touch of my baby’s hand. All that I am now and hope to be, I owe it to my mom and my daughter.

Wildcard finalist John Raspado hailed as first-ever ‘I Am PoGay’ grand winner WilDCArD finalist John raspado of Baguio City was hailed as the first-ever grand winner of “it’s showtime’s” beauty pageant for gay men, “i Am PoGay,” beating 22 other finalists during its grand finals on “it’s showtime” saturday (May 10).

John won P300,000 and also won the “Brusko ‘Day” award for being the most manly-looking finalist. Ciudades Tierra Series: Trail Run with Nature

oN sIGHt, participants were mentally taking notes of the possible challenges ahead. As the sun rose to its peak, one by one, they lined, consoled, took a photo and prayed for their run.

Armed with determination and race kit numbers embedded with time chip that records their time, participants for the 12k were first to go followed by those who braved the 6k and the excited 3k– with minutes interval, that is. As the gunshot was fired by team Posible Coach and race director Gado Pelingo, the excitement of what lies ahead tripled by the second.

The recently concluded Ciudades tierra series is a first of its kind in Davao where runners, enthusiasts and pros, battled with themselves and their threshold for the great outdoors. With its luscious green fields expanding from all ends, it was more than a ‘laid-back

run’ but an adventure that made everyone expect the unexpected.

From a 15 ft man made Anarchy Wall, race Wall and wet Mud Pit, participants raced with time to surpass each obstacle strategically placed and organized by IroK Adventures that truly highlighted the vast wonders of Ciudades.

Cavs fire Brown again C

LeveLAND (AP) -- Cavaliers owner Dan gilbert felt he made a big mistake when he fired Mike Brown as his coach in 2010.

Brown’s second shot with the Cavs ended Monday after one just one season as gilbert dismissed the only Cleveland coach who has ever made it to the NBA finals.

Brown had been re-hired last April by gilbert, who regretted dismissing him four years earlier.

While the Cavs’ record improved and they made strides defensively under Brown this season, the club missed the playoffs again and gilbert decided it was time to make another change. ‘’This is a very tough business,’’ gilbert said in a statement. ‘’It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown.

Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction. Although, there was some progress from our fin-

ish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best.’’

In addition to firing Brown, gilbert announced he’s retaining David griffin as the club’s fulltime general manager. griffin had been the interim gM since Feb. 6, when gilbert fired Chris grant one day after the Cavs lost to a Los Angeles Lakers team which finished the game with just five eligible players. gilbert said griffin would lead the search for Brown’s successor. It’s not known what input griffin had in Brown’s firing. griffin has ties to former Phoenix executive Steve Kerr, who is one of New York president Phil Jackson’s top choices to take over the Knicks. griffin also has worked with Mike D’Antoni and Alvin gentry. other coaches who could get consideration for the Cavs’ opening include Mark Jackson and george Karl.

He numbers of the Manny Pacquiao versus Timothy Bradley rematch are in and Bob Arum is not ecstatic about it. The first fight between Pacquiao and Bradley generated 890,000 pay-per-view buys. With the revenge card in play for Pacquiao, the second fight was expected to do more or at least equal the sales of the first one.

“We’re between 750,000 and 800,000. Sure, it’s a disappointment,” Arum told Dan Rafael.

Promotions added that Pacquiao’s numbers took a hit because he was against a non-Hispanic opponent.

“The absence of Mexican or Hispanic opponent hurt,” Arum added. “If you had a challenger like, for example, Marquez, the fight would do over a million buys. Tim is a great fighter but he’s not Hispanic and he we tried everything to energize the black community without that much success. But we all made money on the fight. We did oK.” With the disappointing

numbers in pay-per-view buys in the United States, Arum bared that Pacquiao could return to Macau for his next fight later this year.

“Having (future Pacquiao) fights in Macau makes so much sense because we can do huge site fees and we want to launch pay-per-view in China,” Arum explained.

“We couldn’t get it up and running for the [Brandon] Rios fight but we will, and then, between that and the site fee, we won’t be so reliant on the pay-per-view in the United States.”

Barrera: Manny will beat Floyd

eXICAN boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera thinks Manny Pacquiao will beat Floyd Mayweather if the fight the world wants to see happens.

In an exclusive interview with edge Davao during the Pinoy Pride 25 world championship card press conference, Barrera, who won numerous world titles in three different weight classes, said he likes the style of the Filipino who beat him twice before retiring.

However, he clarified that his analysis is based on the perception that Marcos Maidana had actually beaten Mayweather in their fight two weeks ago. The flamboyant American escaped with a points win over the gritty Argentine fighter.

“If Maidana had the right strategy against Floyd, Pacquiao will beat Floyd,” Barrera predicted. “I believe Manny can beat him. If people say Maidana win, I say Pacquiao can win against Floyd.”

Barrera picked Pacquiao to beat Mayweather because he liked the aggressive style of the Filipino. “I like the style of Manny Pacquiao. I don’t like the style of Floyd.

In Mexico that’s not the way we fight,” he said.

Mexican warriors like Barrera are known to fight fearlessly and engage their opponents. However, Barrera paid tribute to Mayweather.

“Floyd is a very intelligent fighter, he moves fast.

Floyd knows Manny Pacquiao could put pressure on him,” he added.

All that, however, will be put to naught if the fight does not happen.

For Barrera, he believes Mayweather should fight Pacquiao and end the debate on who between them is the greatest active world champion.

“I want to see the fight.

I want to see the fight because it is a good fight. Floyd is the best right now and with Manny Pacquiao back, I think this is going to be a very good fight,” Barrera said.

Asked if he thinks Pacquiao has lost his power and speed, Barrera said he thinks Pacquiao simply evolved and adjusted to the situation.

“I think it’s different.

Timothy Bradley did not put pressure on Manny. He moved all the time. For that Manny Pacquiao changed tactic, put pressure and moved very good,” he explained. “Yes, that is what Manny Pacquiao did. He changed strategy.”

He said that if the fight happens, it is the people who will be the ultimate winner.

“The people who want to see the fight will win.”

The Mexican legend, who was in town with his protégé Moises Fuentes for the WBo light flyweight championship fight against Filipino titlist Donnie Nietes, is a former two-time WBo super-bantamweight,

Lineal/The Ring featherweight, and WBC/IBF super-featherweight champion.

Barrera ranks no. 43 on eSPN’s 50 greatest Boxers of All-Time.

The highlight of Barrera’s record included two fights against Pacquiao. on November 16, 2003, Barrera was defeated by Fil-

shiftier against Fuentes on Saturday night at the MoA Arena for his defense of the WBo belt. Most significantly, he has more fuel on the tank this time compared to his last fight with the Mexican in Cebu City which ended in a draw after Nietes lost steam towards the last few rounds.

“There are still some weaknesses we need to work on,” Curson said.

Pursued by this writer to reveal the “weaknesses”, Curson ducked. “No, I cannot tell you now.”

Nietes showed tremendous improvement against Fuentes whom he sent to the canvas three times in the ninth before referee Robert Byrd called it a night for the marauding Mexican, a protégé of the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera.

ident Mike Aldeguer considered Nietes’ performance last Saturday one of his best fights ever and credited the improvement to Curson. “Nick did a good job on Donnie. No doubt about that.”

Curson is the strength coach of Donaire who was at ringside to work on the television coverage. It was Donaire who signaled Nietes to throw an overhand to the head of Fuentes after Nietes softened the Mexican with a barrage of blows to the body.

The day after the fight, Curson was fetched

by Donaire’s SUv. Before boarding, he told edge Davao he will be awaiting the decision of ALA Promotions if he will continue to work on Nietes.

Strength coach says Nietes could still get better

IveN more time to work out on WBo light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes, strength coach Nick Curson says he could correct “some remaining weaknesses.”

Curson, who was loaned by world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire to ALA Promotions to personally work on Nietes, revealed to edge Davao that the Filipino champ still has some aspects of his conditioning to be ironed out.

“I worked on him for three months for the (Moises) Fuentes fight and look at the changes on Nietes?

He was amazing tonight,” said Curson in an exclusive interview after Nietes scored a resounding ninth round stoppage over the Mexican interim world minimumweight champion.
