ORMER Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy laughed off the 82 counts of murder and two counts of frustrated murder filed against him and 28 others before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday. In an interview, Uy said all the allegations are “black propaganda” aimed at damaging his reputation. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed the 30-page complaint for the murder of 82 individuals and
the frustrated murder on two people in Tagum City, Butuan, and Compostela Valley Province from 2008 to 2012. Uy was tagged as the man behind the ‘Tagum Death squad’ (TDS), an alleged group of individuals tasked to kill thieves, snatchers, drug pushers, and other criminals in Tagum City. The complaint said the squad was later used for “contract killings to eliminate business competitors, enemies, and even police officers, who
were threats to them or going against their interest, with the approval of Mayor Uy.” Uy, however, said some of the cases filed against him were already dismissed by the city prosecution office. “Nakakatawa nga (It’s funny), actually some of the cases were dismissed by the local fiscal for being without basis. Hindi siguro sila kontento kaya pina-abot nila sa NBI central office (Maybe they weren’t content with that so they elevated it to the NBI cen-
tral office),” he said. Uy named retired Superintendent Cesar Azares, former Deputy Provincial Director of the Davao del Norte Police Station, as the person behind the propaganda.
