AYOR Rodrigo Duterte said he would have allowed Canadian professor Abu Ameen Bilal Philips to speak in Davao City because the latter was here only to promote the teachings of the Qur’an.

“From what I have gathered from the military who heard him because he was tailed, there was a surveillance and I

think they were able to record his speeches,” Duterte said in an interview on Wednesday night.

He said that there was nothing wrong with the purpose of Philips in coming to the city since people believe in the goodness of man.

“Kung ganun lang yan (If that was his only purpose), I would allow him to talk… Because we all

believed in the goodness of man and the words of Holy Qur’an,” Duterte said.

But the mayor said perhaps in other places he visited, Philips uttered words that prompted the authorities to suspect him of having connections with terrorist groups.

Duterte said he learned that the City Council of Zamboanga

City passed a resolution declaring Philips persona non grata (an unwelcome person) because he was heard advocating radicalism and extremism in his talks during his visit there.

S the need for a sport complex rises, the City Government of Davao is planning to progressively fund the construction of the proposed sports complex in a 20-hectare area owned by the University of Philippines-Mindanao Campus.

In an interview at his office yesterday, Davao City Planning and Development Office (DCP-

DO) officer-in-charge Marcelino Escalada said the proposed project will cost the city “a lot” – to the tune of P500 million.

“We would like to address by progressively funding it instead of funding it just once,” he said.

Escalada, who is part of the technical working group for the sports complex, said they envision the facility to be “state-of-the-art.”

“It will have swimming pool, track and oval, and athlete’s quarters,” he said, adding that they already have the project design.

Davao City Sports and Development Office head William “Butch” Ramirez, however, said the proposed facility will not be as sophisticated as the sports complexes of other cities because an ideal sports complex

Ilagan: Place Danao under preventive suspension

ABRIELA Women’s Party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan yesterday said Davao City Police Office (DCPO) director Senior Superintendent Vicente D. Danao should be placed under preventive suspension and not temporary relief from his position.

Ilagan told Edge Davao that Danao’s relief is not enough since theirs is an on-going investigation of the administrative case

for grave misconduct filed against him by his wife.

Danao was temporarily relieved from his post last September 1 after receiving an order from Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 regional director Wendy G. Rosario. He was then replaced by Superintendent Marvin Pepino.

In a recent press conference at The Royal Mandaya Hotel , Pepino said Danao can be the DCPO chief again depending on

the result of the fact-finding mission that is being conducted by PRO 11.

Ilagan, however, said Danao could influence the investigation on him if he is reinstated while the probe is still going on.

“Danao could use his position to make changes in the result of the investigation,” she said.

Rosario had earlier said the fact-finding team was formed to assess if Danao is still fit for his post.

FTER setting up the 10-hectare mixed-use district as its first footprint in Davao City in 2011, property giant Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) is planning to redevelop a 25-hectare plywood factory owned by the Alcantara Group in Lanang District into an upscale mixed-use community.

Laywer and engineer Dominic Joseph Felizarta, officer-in-charge of the City Building Office, confirmed that his office is just waiting for the development plan of the property joint project.

“From what I heard, they said that they will submit the plan by the fourth quarter of the year. After that we will just do an assessment before they can start the construction,” Felizarta said yesterday.

Felizarta told reporters that ALI and the Alcantara Group plan to make the mixed used community almost similar to Abreeza Ayala Mall “but much better.”

“From what I know, they are planning to put a mall and condominiums,” he said.

Earlier reports said the project will involve the development of residential and commercial lots, low- to mid-rise towers, and a retail component.

It is expected to add more than 2,000 condo-

minium units and about 7,000 square meters of leasable space to ALI’s growing residential and commercial leasing portfolio.

Felizarta said he still has no idea what the estimated cost of the total property development will be.

It was in March last year that ALI inked a joint-venture agreement for the project with Alsons Development and Investment Co. (Aldevinco), an investment company of the Alcantara group and one of the leading property developers in Davao City.

Based on earlier reports, the Alcantara group will contribute the land in exchange for 40- percent interest in the project while ALI will control the 60 percent.

The 25-hectare area is currently used for a plywood factory but in a limited capacity. The area is managed and owned by the Alcantara and Aldevinco.

ALI’s existing property development in Davao City was the 10-hectare mixed-use Abreeza in 2010 through a joint-venture partnership with Anflo Management and Investment Corp. of the Floirendo family.

At present, there is an on-going construction of a 26-story condominium within the Abreeza mixed-use district. CRC

ARMM business sector lauds BBL submission T he business sector in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) welcomed the submission

by President Benigno S. Aquino III of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) to Congress last Wednesday.

Datu Haron Bandila, chair of the ARMM Business Council, said they are also hoping that Congress will immediately approve the BBL for the entrenchment of the Bangsamoro government in place of the autonomous Muslim region.

“We are very happy about the submission.

From the very start, we are supportive of the peace process between the government and the MILF [Moro Islamic Liberation Front],” he said in a phone interview.

Bandila said the business sector in the ARMM has taken part in consultations conducted in relation to the GPH-MILF peace process.

He expressed hopes that the agenda pushed by the ARMM business sector—such as the improvement of sea and air ports in the region—will

be addressed by the new Bangsamoro political entity.

“Commitments were made to us by both sides and we hope they will honor them,” Bandila said.

There’s a need to improve infrastructure facilities in the ARMM to make doing business in the area easier and to further attract more investors, he said.

Bandila, who said he has yet to read the draft BBL, noted that businesses play an important role in generating jobs for the people.

Ishak Mastura, chair of ARMM’s Regional Board of Investments, also hailed the submission of the draft BBL, which was handed to Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. in a ceremony at the Malacanang Palace in Manila.

“This sends a positive signal to potential investors to locate in the area,” Mastura said.

Customs cracks down on imported car dealers

HE Bureau of Customs (BOC) has begun cracking down on automobile dealers selling imported vehicles in various auto exchanges and other establishments nationwide following allegations that many of these cars were smuggled into the country.

Personnel from the Bureau’s Enforcement Group and Customs Police began inspection operations last August 27 at two auto dealers in Makati.

The BOC said a total of 39 imported vehicles were checked at the Buendia Car Exchange and the 387 Auto Center, both along Jupiter Street in Bel-Air, Makati, for proof of payment of duties and taxes, Certificate of Reg-

istration with the Land Transportation Office and other documents.

The vehicles inspected include Audi, Lexus, Mercedes Benz and BMW sedans; Hummer and Range Rover SUVs; as well as Porsche and Corvette sport cars.

“While all 39 vehicles our teams inspected in Makati checked out and yielded no negative findings, we will continue to exercise the visitorial powers of the Bureau to ensure that auto dealers and traders are complying with the law and are not fencing smuggled cars,” Customs deputy commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said.

The inspection of dealers of imported vehicles stems from Department Order (DO) No.

32-2014 issued by the Department of Finance in May 2014 which requires owners and operators of car exchanges, garages, auto trades and other similar establishments to present proof that duties and taxes have been paid on the imported vehicles.

The DO also directed BOC to seize the imported vehicle if no proof of payment of duties and taxes can be presented.

Sections 2536 and 2208 of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines empowers the BOC to inspect imported goods outside the ports, to include warehouses and retail establishments with prior authorization from the Commissioner of Customs, and to seize items that are clearly smuggled.

farm produce to the nearest market and the prohibitive cost it would entail due to horrible road conditions.

“The muddy and bumpy road would take us at least two days to bring our products to the market. So why grow other crops such as banana if it would only be damaged during transport?” he said.

But now, Drilon, who is also the village chair, is expanding his farm and growing a hectare of lakatan banana.

He is also looking forward to additional income that would be raised from his nine-month-old banana farm.

Globe implements validation message to curb text scams G

LOBE Telecom implemented this week a new process in which customers doing Share-A-Load transactions will be sent a validation text message.

Customers doing a Share-A-Load or a ShareA-Promo transaction will be asked to confirm their transactions. The step is intended to address the proliferation of text scams that trick customers into doing Share-A-Load transaction without their knowledge.

The validation message reads as follows: “You are about to share PXXX load with 0916XXXXXXX. Reply YES within 5 minutes to proceed. P1/transaction. Report text scams to www.globe.com.ph/ stopspam.”

The validation message would come from 2652xxxxxxxxx in which the last 9 digits are the transaction number.

Globe said replying to the message is free of charge. On the other hand, customers who fail to reply within 5 minutes will receive the following message: “We’re sorry, but

your Share-A-Load/Promo transaction has been cancelled because the response time exceeded 5 minutes. Please try again.

Thanks!”

“We want to continuously protect our customers against these scams.

By putting in place this additional measure, we will help prevent our customers from unwittingly undertaking Share-A-Load transactions,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice-President for Corporate Communications.

She noted that even with widespread communication efforts, some customers are still unaware that by adding the number “2” before the 10-digit mobile number of the recipient, they are actually doing a Share-A-Load transaction.

Dabawenyo children’s book illustrator designs for Brazilian flip-flop brand T

HIS year’s Make Your Own Havaianas (MYOH) returned to Davao with its usual colorful and summery vibe.

On top of the extensive range of colorful soles and straps and attractive pins for flip-flops customization, the seventh edition of the event put the spotlight on the Davao pin.

MYOH, as the name suggests, is an event that allows customers to assemble their own pair of Havaianas flip-flops using soles and straps in myriad hues; pins are also available to accessorize pairs.

The Davao pin, which takes form in an eagle, is specially designed by Davaoeño artist and children’s book illustrator Macky Pamintuan. “[Havaianas’] partnership with Macky is a perfect fit,” said Marga Nograles, managing partner of Martish Marketing Company, the exclusive sub-distributor of the Brazilian flip-flops brand for Southern and Eastern Mindanao. “Not only was he born and raised in Davao, he also lives the same Havaianas spirit of fun through his happy and

colorful illustrations.”

Macky has a BFA in Illustration from San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. He has illustrated for books by publishing giants like HarperCollins, Scholastic, Sterling publishing, Random House, Mcgraw-Hill, and Peaceable Kingdom Press, among others. In this interview, Macky talks about his design for the Havaianas Davao pin, his life as an artist, and his favorite Mindanao summer destinations.

Tell us about the Davao Eagle pin for Havaianas.

How did you come up with a local design that is perfect for a Brazilian flip flops brand?

It didn’t take long to decide on the design. It was important that I chose a Davao icon that is easily identifiable on a tiny pin.

How did this design collaboration come into plan/action?

I was asked if I was interested in doing a pin design late last year. I’ve

had discussions with Havaianas before but things didn’t pan out with our schedules. This time, the timing was perfect. It also helped that it was Havaianas Davao who asked me. Havaianas’ Marga Nograles, who’s an old friend, gave me a call and I gladly said yes.

How did you feel when you first knew you’d be doing a pin design for the brand?

I was glad to work on a piece that would represent my hometown. Havaianas is a well-known quality brand and for them to shine their big spotlight on Davao is a credit to them. I actually own a pair myself. I bring my gray flip flops everywhere and I’m due to get a second pair because it’s only fair I give my trusty old pair a break from time to time.

What other uniquely Davao icons did you consider before you chose the eagle for the pin?

Something that isn’t complicated to look at.

That pretty much brings you to a few options like, say, a durian, the eagle, the Kris dagger or, I don’t know, a 30 kph speed limit

INOY Big Brother (PBB) All-In Season’s Top 2 Maris Racal returned home Tuesday in Tagum City and was welcomed back by the people who voted

for, supported, and loved her.

She was mobbed and cheered by ordinary folk as well as city and provincial officials as she barnstormed the city to

thank them for helping her win in the popular ABS-CBN show.

Maris visited the offices of the Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, Vice Governor Victorio “Baby” Suaybaguio Jr. and of some board members while Capitol employees briefly stopped working to see, cheer for, and have selfies with their newest idol.

She also put City Hall in merry frenzy as she visited the offices of Mayor Allan Rellon and others.

Maris then entertained her schoolmates at St. Mary’s College with three songs.

People along the city’s streets cheered her with shouts of joy as she waved and smiled at them on her motorcade.

“She’s Top 1 for us Tagumenyos, not Daniel Matsunaga (who won the show),” said disc jockey Jonelbin Larawan.

The eagle was an easy choice. I’m a fan of the durian, but a much bigger fan of the eagle.

If you could give the Davao Eagle pin a name, what would it be?

That’s easy: Pith. It’s short for the eagle’s scientific name: Pithecophaga jefferyi.

What inspires you as an artist?

It’s the same as every person out there who likes to express themselves creatively. The usual stuff: curiosity, imagination, maybe boredom. But really, it’s as simple as just enjoying putting pen to paper and seeing where the line takes me.

What design/illustration projects are you currently working on?

I usually handle multiple projects at the same time. At present, I’m working on five books from different publishers. One zoo-themed book that I’ve been working on for almost a year was just recently completed. I also just did some art for kids’ merchandises and a few magazine covers. It’s a fun job and I’m lucky to have

it.

What’s in your artist kit?

For work, I sketch on pencil then paint digitally on Photoshop. That way, it’s easier to send out to clients through the Internet.

For my personal work, I always bring around my old Moleskine sketchbook with a small bag of pencils and pens and draw everything that catches my fancy. If I have extra time, I use my portable water color kit and mess around with it. Sometimes using a cup of coffee residue as a painting medium.

What’s the best thing about your job as an illustrator?

I get to draw for a living. A job my 9-year-old self would greatly appreciate.

What’s your dream project?

There’s still a lot of things that I’d love to do artistically. One of them is to one day do a gallery show here in Davao. I’d probably do paintings with a theme that’s a little different than what I do at work. It’s always good to mix things up.

Describe your perfect summer getaway.

I’d say going to a place full of history and no malls. Probably walking around an old town with a sketchbook as I tell stories to my daughter. Museums, old rocks, colors, strange alleyways and even stranger food. That sounds good to me.

List three of your favorite Mindanao destinations for summer.

I haven’t seen much of Mindanao yet, but I hope to fix that soon.

For now, I have the Butuan museum for the pre-Spanish artifacts and history of Mindanao.

Sunrise at the peak of Mt. Apo for the view. Lastly, Samal island. The island is still largely untouched and without the complications of city life. I hope it stays that way for a long time.

Where have all our Dugongs gone?

AVAO Gulf, with an area of 308,000 hectares, cuts into the island of Mindanao from the Philippine Sea. It is surrounded by all four provinces in the Davao Region and six cities. Samal Island is the largest island located in the gulf while Davao City, on the gulf’s west coast, has the largest and busiest port.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) considers Davao Gulf as one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. Multifarious coral reefs, different mangrove species, cetaceans, and a host of invertebrates contribute to the natural diversity of the gulf.

Along the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Eco-region, Davao Gulf ranks as one of the priority conservation areas, according to WWF-Philippines Vice-Chair and CEO Lorenzo “Lory” Tan. Davao Gulf, he said, is the second most densely populated marine habitat in the Philippines where the only remaining species of dugong and five of seven species of turtles can be found.

Unfortunately, the Davao Gulf is being threatened by the very economic activities it supports. “Environmental exploitation by humans is a consequence of growing poverty,” Tan said. “Fish yields have decreased, leading many to adopt destructive fishing methods in order to

survive. Dugong populations have dwindled due to boat propeller accidents and fishnet-caused drowning.”

Dugong (known in the science world as Dugong dugon) is locally called “baboy-dagat” (pig of the sea). It is one of the only four living members of the obscure mammalian Sirenia or sea cows.

Marine experts, however, claim dugong is more closely related to elephants than to other marine mammals such as dolphins and whales.

Like most marine mammals, dugong is an endangered species. It is listed under such category under the Endangered Species Act of the United States. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) classified it as “vulnerable to extinction” under the 2009 World Conservation Union Red List of Threatened Species.

The Dugong (Dugong dugon): Status Report and Action Plans for Countries and Territories in its Range reported that the slow-moving mammal “appears to have disappeared” or has “already become extinct” in some places, particularly “the waters off Mauritius, the Seychelles, western Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Japan’s Sakishima Shoto Islands, Hong Kong’s Pearl River estuary, several islands in the Philippines including

Zambales and Cebu, and parts of Cambodia and Vietnam.”

A report on dugongs made at the Third IUCN Conservation Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2004 stated that the dugong may have been present around almost all of the islands of the Philippines in the early 1900s. At present, occurrences of dugongs have been reported in Isabela and Quezon provinces, southern Mindoro and Palawan, Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf, northeastern Mindanao, and southern Mindanao including the Sulu Archipelago, Sarangani Bay and Pujada Bay. Since time immemorial, the dugong has been hunted throughout its traditional range for its meat, hide, oil, and bones. Its slow movement and inability to take long dives make it easy prey for hunters.

“Dugong tends to move relatively slowly, with an average swimming speed of 10 kilometers per hour, although it can double this speed if necessary,” a marine mammal expert says. “Unlike other marine mammals, it cannot hold its breath underwater for long periods of time, so dives last only from one to three minutes.”

Dugongs are also highly susceptible to being entangled in fishing nets or hit by boat propellers, which can lead to death or serious inju-

ry. Also, its slow reproductive rate means slow population growth, and a high mortality rate may hasten the decline of the species. Experts claim a dugong sexually matures at age 9 to 10 years or as late as 15 years. The female usually gives birth to a single calf; twin births are rare.

In the Philippines, the number of dugongs has been declining due to a number of factors. Most of these, environmentalists argue, are man-made activities which include hunting, accidental drawing in nets, dynamite and cyanide fishing, and capture in fish corals.

“The dugong’s meat is tasty and can compete with beef,” said one restaurant owner.

“Dugongs are on the verge of extinction,” said the Pawikan Conservation Project (PCP), an implementing arm of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB).

PCP manages and coordinates both the “pawikan” (marine turtles) and dugong conservation efforts of the government and private sector.

In the Philippines, the dugong has been listed as “vulnerable to extinction” since 1982. However, it took nine years for the government to issue Administrative Order No. 55, declaring dugong “a protected marine mammal in the Philippines.”

“The killing or taking of dugong for whatever purposes, except for sci-

entific research, is now prohibited,” the administrative order said in part.

“Any person who shall hunt, kill, wound, or take away, possess, transport, or dispose of the dugong, dead or alive, or its meat and any of its by-products, shall be punished.”

The order also stipulated that vessels or carriers, gears, tools, equipment and other paraphernalia used in the commission of the prohibited acts and offenses including the catch, as instrument and proceeds of the offenses, shall be confiscated in favor of the government.

Today, the dugong is listed as “critically endangered” in the Administrative Order No. 200414 dated May 22, 2004 of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). By virtue of Executive Order 192, DENR is the government agency mandated to formulate and implement plans and programs for the conservation, protection, development and management of the country’s wildlife resources, including the dugong.

The dugongs can’t be saved and protected if the government does it alone, PCP says. Thus, it urges Filipinos to help save the dugongs from extinction by reporting any illegal fishing activities to DENR, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or even to local government units in the area.

Dugongs are called sea cows because they graze on seagrasses. An adult dugong can consume more than 30 kilograms of seagrass a day.

The Philippines has 18 species along its coasts, making the country with the second highest (after Western Australia’s more than 30 species) in terms of the number of seagrasses in the world.

The area covered by seagrasses in the country is 27,282 square kilometers.

“Dugongs and sea turtles serve as lawn mowers of the sea grass beds and they are necessary to maintain a healthy marine ecosystem. If you have clean seagrass habitats, more fishes will thrive in the area and that means a sustainable food supply,” said Gregg Yan, information officer of WWF Philippines.

The PCP appeals to all Filipinos to help protect the habitats of dugongs. They can do so by not polluting the water and by being environmentally-conscious.

“Losses of marine mammals constitute only a tiny portion of the overall devastation, but have caused particular concern because they serve as highly visible indicators of the difficulties other species, including humans, face,” reminds Ed Ayres, a researcher of the Washington, D.C.-based Worldwatch Institute.

HE nation has been shocked time and again by incidents of involvement of law enforcers, police officers in particular, in criminal activities.

The “hulidap” (EDSA kidnapping) of a Dabawenyo businessman who was abducted by a squad of active and dismissed policemen is the most recent one. Before this, a police officer who was arrested for being a drug user confessed to being the triggerman in the murder of prominent racing champion Enzo Pastor.

Before this, a high police officer in Davao was accused of masterminding the murder of a multi-millionaire businessman from Cebu City. The list is endless.

The presence of rogue enforcers in the country’s police organization has a chilling effect. If allowed to worsen, there will be a time when police will cease to be regarded as the protectors of the people. They will just become another group of armed predators preying on innocent and defenseless law-abiding cit-

To be sure, this is not the first time, but not all members of the national police are involved in high-profile crimes. Neither is the problem confined to our jaded country. At various times in history, the United States of America, Hong Kong, and other first world countries had their share of misbehaving police officers.

In the Philippines, the National Police Commission was created partly to address this problem. We now have the police academy. However, the Napolcom and other government agencies, and even special courts like the People’s Law Enforcement Board, the Ombudsman, the Civil Service Commission, not to mention the police internal inspectorates, seem to be not enough to instill discipline in our police officers.

Our national leaders need to focus their attention on this problem once and for all.

EATHERS in the broad wing of time.” That is how Jean Paul Richter describes birthdays.

And they are good for you, suggests Larry Lorenzoni. “Statistics show that the people who have the most, live the longest,” he says.

Well, in a way, a birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun. We better enjoy this trip.

It is thought that birthday celebrations originated in the Roman Empire. And they were largely due to the prominent religion at the time, Mithraism, which was later supplanted by Christianity.

Although you might celebrate your birthday every year, your actual birthday only occurs once every 7 years! Not counting the leap years, the date you were born on moves each year to the following day of the week. This means your annual celebration is actually for your birth date - not your birthday - and in truth your birth day i.e. the actual day you were born on occurs only every 7 years!

Most Filipinos would say, “Maligayang kaarawan sa iyo.” But the Tagalogs usually greet, “Maligayang bati sa iyong kaarawan.” The Cebuanos and other Visayan-speaking people say, “Malipayong adlaw nga natawhan kanimo.” And the Ilongos would declare, “Masadya gid nga adlaw sa imo pagkatawo.”

HE earliest Mindanao contact with the Spaniards was a happenstance. It took place on October 26, 1521 when the depleted crew of Portugal-born Ferdinand Magellan got lost and drifted to Sarangani Islands while in search of a route that would bring them to Maluku, Indonesia. Antonio Pigafetta, the expedition’s Venetian diarist, wrote that while sailing southeast and encountering a squall, they found four islands, namely Ciboco (Sibuco), Birahan Batolach (Birano Batolaki), Sarangani, and Candighar (Balut). The incidental visit had nothing to do with proselytization.

There was not even a Mass that was said because Fr. Pedro de Valderrama, the chaplain of the voyage, was earlier killed on May 1, 1521 in a massacre in Cebu.

Later, several other expeditions were marooned on the eastern coast of Mindanao due to inclement weather. There was the 1524 expedition led by Garcia Jofre de Loaisa (1490-1526), who was dispatched by King Charles V of Spain to colonize the Spice Island via the western route; the 1527 expedition under Alvaro de Saavedra, a cousin of Hernando

But I like the attitude of Robert Browning. The English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse made him famous had said, “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made.”

Recently, my friend Kenneth Dong, a businessman and owner of Liv Superclub, celebrated his birthday in Cebu City. Although I was not able to go, I was told that he did a Party for a Cause in partnership with Quota International Cebu South.

Quota International, which inducted Kenneth as its newest member during the party, is a non-profit organization empowering women, children, the deaf, hardof-hearing, and speech-impaired in local communities around the world.

In an email he sent me days after his birthday, he said that the beneficiaries of the Party for a Cause are the disadvantaged children of Cebu. Soon, a new playground at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center Pedia Department will be

built.

“Instead of having the usual lavish celebration for my birthday in a hotel, I decided to do charity work,” he said.

This was not the first time he did it. In fact, it has become a tradition for my friend to do it every year on his birthday. He believes that blessings should be shared to those who are in need. The recent Party for a Cause, for one, embodied his passion for charity.

Among those who attended the Party for a Cause were television host and actor Edu Manzano (also a member of Quota), Senator Bam Aquino, Congressman Terry Ridon of Kabataan Party List, and Congressman Samsam Gullas.

Singing sensation and award-winning thespian Cesar Montano, a close friend of the birthday man, also graced the event.

In fact, the actor from Bohol jammed with the acoustic band.

Kenneth may be Chinese (he was born and grew up in China) but in a way he represents all that is good about a Filipino: hardworking, honest, humble, and having a strong will to keep going forward despite all odds.

His family moved to the Philippines in 1996 when their business in China was not doing well. He was 12 at that time when he arrived in the country; he saw firsthand how hard it was living in Divisoria, where his family put up a business.

He told himself that one day, he would help those people who are having hardships in life.

Even though he has formal school-

ing, he learned more about life and living from the streets and from the general merchandise that his parents had. Little by little, he built his business and slowly it grew. Now, he has three business enterprises: Asuki Weighing Systems, Inc., A-Linx Events International Inc., and more recently the Liv Superclub.

“I came to realize that weighing scale is a basic need to government, private enterprises, and even to simple households,” explained Kenneth, the vice president for sales and marketing and incorporator of the Asuki Weighing Systems, Inc., an affiliate of a China-based Japanese firm. “We carry a wide range and almost complete of highly competitive digital electronic weighing scales with weights varying from 0.1 milligram to 200 tons,” he said.

Recently, however, his company branched out to construction. Thus, Asuki Development and Construction Management, Inc. was born. Actually, it is an affiliate of Lian.lie Corporation, whose main office is in China and has a satellite branch in Manila. It has been in the business since 2008 and has progressed into one of the most trusted builders and contractors in Southeast Asia.

On why the company opted to join the construction business, Kenneth said: “Construction in the Philippines is on the rise and investments pour in after the transition of the new administration. It is the right time to introduce our technology, which is the pre-fabricated structural steel concept. We believe this is the first in this field and of its kind in the industry.”

Meanwhile, Santiago sailed north to Mexico, while Santa María del Parral, under the stewardship of Jorge de Manrique, braved the Pacific Ocean and was marooned at Lambayon, a settlement between Dapnan and Baganga, where a mutiny took place. Manrique, his brother and Juan de Benavidez were killed in the revolt and their bodies thrown overboard. Sebastian Oporto, a townmate of Magellan, and two conspirators in the uprising were later rescued by the Saavedra expedition, which was sent to investigate what happened to the De Loaisa voyage. Eventually, the galleon Santa Maria de la Victoria reached Spice Islands alone in September, 1526.

On February 29, 1543, Villalobos sailed into Baganga Bay, which he christened Malaga. He also named Mindanao Caesaria Karoli in honor of Charles V of

Spain, the Roman emperor. Strangely, despite suffering from extreme hunger, the team stayed in the area March 31, before he decided to bring the fleet to Masao, Butuan, in search of food, then to Sarangani, where for sometime the crew stayed put despite claims Mindanao belonged to the Portuguese.

Food shortage later compelled Villalobos and his men to sail north in September to find a favorable eastward route in crossing the Pacific. But Villalobos’ flagship, the galiot Santiago, was no match against the raging northeasterly October winds from the Pacific Ocean, which forced the crew to drift to Bahia de la Resurreccion (Mayo Bay, Davao Oriental), where another ship, San Cristobal, joined them after meeting the same contrary winds in the Visayas.

Similar travails confronted the other vessels of the expedition. Finally, they made their final voyage to Maluku Islands where Villalobos was fiercely at odds with the Portuguese; he was arrested and imprisoned in Amboina, and eventually died from tropical fever.

On Monday, the BI issued a deportation order to Philips for alleged violation of Commonwealth Act. No. 613 or the Philippine Immigration act of 1940.

Prior to the deportation order, the BI already issued a black listed order against Philips, but

the latter was not arrested because he arrived before of the issuance of the order.

Philips was invited by the Police Regional Office (PRO)11 last Sunday, considering his status as person of interest in the national security.

quite expensive, we can make our phone batteries’ juice last longer by not over using it. Try putting your gadgets away when you are working on something, gardening or merely meditating.

you meet people on the ground, you will see how they use a multitude of apps that aide and smooth out everyday tasks and transaction of people in San Francisco. So people living there are amongst the happiest, tourists love going there since its user-friendly and commerce is boosted because technology is embedded into

society,” Su said.

His team already built a platform for helping people optimize life called Lifebit and thought of creating apps to optimize city life. That’s where the City apps initiative was started. They partnered with Davao Tourism office to debut the first one. It took them under a month to come up with the app.

They did not just come up with the app for nothing because they have this one noble reason why they are so passionate about it.

“We are really hoping Davao Clubs will change Davao City into something more efficient. Tourists will have a dynamic itinerary thru clubs, easier navigation thru our offline maps. Merchants will have

a hassle-free, no-cost loyalty program available and attract new customers too. Locals will get deals and freebies as well as cinema schedules in one place. News companies and bloggers will get additional traffic and exposure to solidify their brand”, Su said.

There’s more to see in this very useful app. At this very moment, they are talking to the top 20 merchants all over the city to test the Shop. Once it’s running in a few weeks, a small shop like Famous Belgian Waffle can create its own club then make the quests like Buy 5 Banana Waffles and get 50 points.

They can then make a coupon that says “Get a FREE Chocolate for 50 points!”.

Now imagine that for hotels, malls, fashion shops, etc all around the city.

They will also come up with a Twitter account for News and expand Shows to include general events.

AGR bats for Nat’l Sports Training Center for amateur athletes V

isionary Davao del Norte lawmaker Rep. Anthony G. Del Rosario (1st District, Davao del Norte) is pushing for the establishment of a state-of-the-art and highly scientific sports complex that will serve as the training center for national athletes.

Del Rosario introduced House Bill 4906, to be known as the National Amateur Sports Training Center Act of 2014, which appropriates P2 billion for the construction of the sports complex. The amount shall come from the National Treasury.

Del Rosario said sports champions are born out of three contributory factors, namely, training environment that is conducive to psychological and physical preparations, a support system that is holistic and nurturing and adequate international exposures where quality of performances are assessed and measures of skills are tested.

“Our expectations must be coupled with support and action. If we want a brighter future for Philippine sports, we must find ways to improve the competitive edge of our athletes because we owe it to our national athletes to give all the best possible training opportunities so

they can excel in international competitions,” Del Rosario said.

“One major step towards the realization of this goal is through the establishment of a sports training center with a substantial space to accommodate all sports, located in a thinly populated area so the athletes can focus on the training and be free from distractions, has state-of-the-art training equipment and technologies, and capable of hosting adequate number of dormitories with modern amenities,” Del Rosario stressed.

According to Del Rosario, the 86-year old Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) has served as the training and living quarters for national athletes for the longest time.

“The RMSC is the biggest sports complex in the country and the main facility for the development and promotion of grassroots sports as well as multi-sectoral sporting activities. However, with its location at the heart of the City of Manila and all the noise and air pollution, the RMSC has ceased to become an

ideal environment for the well-being of the athletes, Del Rosario added.

Del Rosario also noted that the PSC dutifully supports the national athletes through provision of adequate training equipment, free use of training facilities and monthly stipends, among others, but these efforts have not been enough to make up the whole process of producing champions.

“What is critical and most important is giving the athlete an access to an environment that can provide advanced and scientific trainings. Unfortunately, RMSC falls short of the requirement,” Del Rosario said.

Under the measure, a Board shall be created to expedite the implementation of establishing and construction of the Center, ensuring the compliance with all the safety standards and construction laws and its technicalities as well as complying with the requirements of international standards in building sports facilities.

The board is composed of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as chairman, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as co-chairman, Philippine Olympic

Committee (POC), Local Government Unit (LGU) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) as members.

The proposed establishment of a national amateur sports training center complete with necessary sport s

facilities and amenities that are at par with international standards shall be constructed within a period of 18 months and after a period of planning not exceeding six months upon effectivity of the measure.

The site must be suitable and conducive to high-level training of athletes and preferably located at the outskirts of the metropolis, free from moral obstruction, noise and air pollution.

To finance the maintenance, oper-

ation and management of the Center one year upon completion of construction and operation, the amount of P55 million is also appropriated in addition to the general fund allocated for the Maintenance and Operating Expenses (MOOE) of the PSC under t h e GAA.

Further, all incidental income that may be derived by the Commission in its management and operation shall form part of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), which shall be used solely by the PSC for the maintenance, operation and management of the facilities in the National Amateur Sports Training Center.

The Center shall be exempt from the payment of real estate tax, stamp tax, amusement tax, income tax and or other form of taxes on the properties. (PNA)

AMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan flies to Madrid today to officially accept an invitation from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for him to sit as member of the influential Central Board.

Pangilinan, head of the vast MVP business group that includes telecommunications, electric distribution and infrastructure, will be the only third Filipino to earn the distinction becoming member of the Central Board, the first two being

former Senator Ambrosio Padiila and Gonzalo “Lito” Puyat II. Puyat the longest serving president of the now-defunct Basketball Association of the Philippines from 1969 to 1995, went to serve the world’s governing body in basketball as its president for two terms from 1984 t0 1996.

ADRID -- France will face Serbia in Friday’s 2014 FIBA World Cup semi-final after it pulled off one of the biggest upsets as the reigning European champions knocked off Spain 65-52 in their second shot at the hosts to reach the final four stage of FIBA’s flagship event for the first time ever.

Boris Diaw scored 15 points, Thomas Heurtel added 13 for the French, who were beaten by Spain 88-64 a week ago in the Group Phase.

The French dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Spaniards 50-28, with France big man Rudy Gobert coralling 13 on his own.

Spain struggled offensively, going 20 of 62 from the field (32 percent) and made just two of their 22 attempts (nine percent) from beyond the arc.

Diaw’s three-pointer to start the scoring matched his point total from the first game against Spain. And it started an 8-0 run to begin the game for France.

The home side finally got on the board through Rudy Fernandez’s lay-up with 6:51 left in the quar-

ter before Diaw’s second effort from long range made it 11-2. Spain answered with a 10-0 run for their first lead, 12-11 and the game was tied at 15-15 at the end of the period.

Gobert’s follow-up dunk early in the second quarter gave France a 2117 lead and the cushion grew to 28-21 on a pair of Nicolas Batum freethrows. Les Bleus maintained that seven-point margin at halftime, 35-28.

Urged on by the boisterous Madrid crowd, Spain roared back, scoring the first six points of the second half to close within 35-34.

The French finally scored with 6:44 minutes left in the period through Diaw but the Spanish push continued and they edged in front 40-39 after an unsportsmanlike foul on Florent Pietrus.

France struggled the rest of the quarter but only trailed 43-42 going into the final frame.

Vincent Collet’s men had taken Spain’s punch and were still standing.

The momentum was firmly in their favour as they went ahead 51-45 on Diaw’s three-pointer

with under seven minutes left.

The versatile forward and Heurtel kept the underdogs ahead 57-52 with less than two minutes to play. The playmaker then nailed a three-pointer with 1:04 remaining for a 60-52 advantage and a stunned Madrid crowd.

There was to be no miracle comeback for Spain in the final minute.

Heurtel hit a pair of free-throws for the first double-digit lead of the night, 62-52, with 46 seconds to go.

Sergio Llull then saw his three-point attempt blocked by Nicolas Batum and Pau Gasol fouled, sending Mickael Gelabale to the line. He made both attempts for a 64-52 cushion with 37 seconds left.

Juan Carlos Navarro missed from beyond the arc and Gasol fouled out when he grabbed Gobert who sank one of two attempts from the charity stripe for the final scoreline.

Gasol finished with a game-high 17 points and Navarro was Spain’s only other player to score in double figures with 10.

RANCE upset Spain 65-52 in front of its stunned fans in the quarterfinals of the Basketball World Cup on Wednesday.

After dominating its first six games and blowing out France by 24 points in the group phase, Spain appeared to be the main candidate to dethrone the United States in a possible final that would have been a rematch of the past two Olympic gold-medal games.

But France defended well and rebounded even better to ruin Spain’s quest for a title for a second straight summer.

Last summer, Tony Parker helped France end Spain’s quest for a third consecutive European title.

This time, Spain had several reasons to believe it would avenge that loss.

Parker wasn’t playing for France, and Spain had Pau Gasol back in its ranks, besides playing at home.

“It’s a painful and disappointing defeat,” Pau said. “We had such high expectations and had played so well until now.”

Spain had averaged 88 points per game through its first six wins, all blowouts. But France cut off Spain’s passing lanes and forced it into solo efforts.

Spain’s guards didn’t adjust by looking for Pau and Marc Gasol in the post enough, and then compounded that by missing all but two of their 22 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

Boris Diaw scored 15 points and Thomas Heurtel added 13 for a France team which pulled in 50 rebounds to Spain’s 28.

Pau had 17 for Spain, but his brother Marc and Serge Ibaka each went 1-of-7 from the field to combine for just 5 points.

Serbia awaits France on Friday after it routed Brazil 84-56 in the other quarterfinal.

Ram Reyes contributed with 11 baskets for the Executive Oldies that got 9 from Glen Escandor who made the second to the last deadlock in the wire-to-wire game midway of the final period.

Torrejas top scored for the ABC with 16. Maquiking had 13.

The Executive Oldies surged ahead early, taking a 24 – 17 lead at the end of the first canto.

But the village chiefs bounced back in the second frame to take a 44 – 43 advantage at the break.
