Dr. Raquel Montejo of DOH Region 11’s health planning and medical specialist, said during a consultation meeting on school-based adoles-

AYOR Rodrigo Duterte urged the New People’s Army unit behind the abduction of five soldiers at Paquibato District in June 17 to treat them accordingly. He believed the rebels would not torture the soldiers in the same manner that they treated previous captives humanely. Duterte pushed for the rebels to observe the proper conduct of treating prisoners by observing the pro-

visions of the Geneva Convention. He admitted that the welfare of the soldiers is one of the concerns that have been bothering him since he assumed office since Monday. Duterte said he does not know yet where to look for the beleaguered soldiers. “I do not want to talk to the military about this because I do not want to be controlled,” he said.

And the newly-constructed Pampanga Village is of big help since it caters 150 families who are typhoon victims. Shelter Cluster Lead and Provincial General Services Officer Arceli Timogtimog also shared that aside from their Village donation, PLGU-Pampanga also handed a P2.5 Million cash donation intended for the aid of the typhoon victims, in which P400,000 was for the PLGU and the rest for the 5 identified mostly affected municipalities. DAPTING to climate change and becoming resilient to disaster risk are challenges that Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo P. del Rosario is bracing for, in his last three years as governor. He called attention to the “veritable challenge” of transforming human development programs “to be climate change adaptive and disaster risk resilient.” He pushed for such

move as he warned of possible loss of development gains that his administration had worked for, to the adverse effects of global climate change. While he cited Davao del Norte to have ranked among the fast-growing provinces in the country in the last 46 years, he revealed the geo-statistics study of the Department of Agriculture (DA) which found out that 66 percent of Davao del Norte’s land area or 205,000 hectares,

is vulnerable to flood, drought and landslides. “This means, the hardearned gains we have today are likely to be swept away in a blink of an eye,” he said. Del Rosario related his concern to the implementation of Climate Change Act (CCA) and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) which he viewed as twin major policies of President Benigno S. Aquino III that would redefine the

global and national priorities. “We must be able to align to these priorities to be able to catch the windfall of public investments,” he said. While noting the typhoon path to have moved closer to the Davao Region, Del Rosario pointed out the need to strengthen the positive behavior and the culture of safety among his constituents. Manhunt on vs teens who shot dead 15-year old boy

P

OLICE authorities have launched a manhunt against two teenagers who allegedly gunned down a high school student and wounded two others Monday afternoon. Insp. Marvin Silvestre, Shariff Aguak police chief, yesterday said the victims, all minors were walking for home when their attackers who were riding tandem on a

motorbike blocked their path and opened fire without provocation using cal. 45 pistol. The lone fatality, 15-year-old Al-Dasher Rajah Tandak, has died from gunshot wounds in different parts of his body before he was rushed to the hospital by bystanders. His companions, also high school students, were rushed to the same

hospital and are now recuperating. Police withheld their identities being minors. After the shooting, the two suspects fled using the same motorbike toward Ampatuan town, also in Maguindanao. Witnesses said the gunmen, about 18 to 20 years old, wore crash helmets so it would be difficult to identify

them. They also used a motorbike without license plate. Silvestre said investigation is still on going and as a precautionary measures he ordered the deployment of policemen near public school premises around Shariff Aguak. Police said the shooting of Tandak could be related to gangsterism. [PNA]

New guns for PNP personnel P

RESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday personally led the distribution of brand new 22, 603 units of Glock 17 Generation 4 pistols at the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City. In symbolic ceremonies, President Aquino, assisted by Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and PNP Chief Director General Alan Purisima, handed over the Glock 17 safe-action 9mm pistols to PNP personnel who were pre-selected to receive the new service firearms. President Aquino said that when he assumed office in 2010, almost 50 percent of PNP personnel didn’t have service firearms provided by the government. “Sa matagal na panahon, para bang sinasabi nating, “Tungkulin n’yo ang mabilis na pagsugpo sa krimen at banta sa seguridad, pero kapag kapakanan n’yo na ang nakataya, magtiis kayo’t ‘wag nang umasa,” President Aquino said, adding that police officers may have just relied on amulets, or prayers since they were unarmed. He also commended the PNP personnel for being able to still carry out their duties despite the situation. “Isipin n’yo, wala man bibit na baril o kulang man sa armas, nagagawa pa rin ninyong magpaki-

tang gilas. Paano pa kaya kung mayroon nang sapat at modernong kagamitan ang inyong hanay?” the President asked. He particularly acknowledged the work of Police Officer 2 Edlyn Arbo and Police Officer 2 Felipe Moncaar who both carried out and accomplished their duties even when they were unarmed. “Tapang, pananagutan, at kasanayan bilang pulis ang tanging sandata . . . Saludo ang buong bayan sa inyong katapangan at pananagutan; at sa buong hanay ng ating kapulisan na walang pinipiling sitwasyon at pagkakataon upang maglingkod sa kapwa at bansa,” President Aquino said. With this procurement —the “biggest” gun deal entered into by the PNP in recent years—officers who haven’t been provided with their own service firearms are to get one each as soon as all 74,879 units are delivered. The PNP has finalized a distribution list for the initial delivery of 22,603 Glock 17 pistols that arrived in February and May. The Glock safe-action pistol is currently in service in almost 60 percent of national police forces and law enforcement agencies in Europe, America and Asia. The Glock 17 Gen 4 successfully passed the

series of functional and operational tests conducted by the PNP including the 20,000 rounds endurance firing test. Purisima gave orders to prioritize issuance of the new handguns to PNP units stationed in major tourist destinations and urban centers, including the 254 graduates of PNPA Class 2013.

Purisima said that only personnel who have passed training on firearms proficiency and firearms maintenance are eligible for issuance of the Glock 17. He said the latest addition of 59,904 handguns to the PNP’s current inventory will ensure an unprecedented 100 percent fill-up in the

EPUTY Majority Leader of the 15th Congress and former Iloilo Rep Janette Garin will be joining the Department of Health (DOH) as its new undersecretary. President Benigno Aquino III confirmed her appointment on Tuesday, July 2, on the sidelines of a Philippine National Police (PNP) event. Aquino said Garin’s

“extensive practice and knowledge as a medical practioner,” added with her legislative background, makes her the perfect fit for the post. Garin was an ally of Aquino in the House, and a co-author of the Reproductive Health Bill. The passage of the controversial RH Bill has been hailed by the Aquino administration as one of its major achievements. Garin, who belongs to

a political family in Iloilo, allied with the Liberal Party in the 2013 elections. Meanwhile, Aquino brushed off questions about offering Liberal Party member and former Quezon Rep Erin Tañada a possible Cabinet position. He said he has not yet talked to Tañada, who he said is busy dealing with questionable election results in his home province.

Garin joins other former lawmakers who have been offered positions in the government by Aquino. Former senators Ping Lacson and Francis Pangilinan are expected to join Aquino’s Cabinet, although Aquino said they have not finalized anything. “The devil is in the details… [but] I’m in touch with both of them,” he said. OST parts of the country will have fair weather except for Mindanao due intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) that will continue to induce rains, according to Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday. PAGASA said an ITCZ is

a merger of winds from different directions, which is also a breeding ground for low pressure areas (LPA). In its advisory, PAGASA said that the regions of Caraga, Davao and Soccsksargen will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. It added that the rest of the country, including

Metro Manila, will be sunny with partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers mostly in the afternoon or evening due to localized thunderstorms. PAGASA added that moderate to strong winds blowing from the southeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and its coastal waters will be mod-

SIA-PACIFIC security talks opened on Tuesday with Beijing under pressure over its South China Sea claims while Washington and Moscow were to meet amid disagreements on Syria and their tug-of-war over US fugitive Edward Snowden. The annual regional forum hosted this year by Brunei began a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry closed ranks with Southeast Asian nations in urging substantive talks on the disputed South China Sea in comments targeted at Beijing. Concerns have been rising that actions by China to increase its grip on disputed islets in the sea, a key corridor for regional and world trade, could lead to conflict with rival claimants.

On Sunday, the Philippines told a gathering of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that China was engaging in a military buildup at sea that threatened regional peace. ASEAN has been pushing a reluctant China for talks on a set of rules governing conduct at sea meant to avert unilateral actions that could spark trouble. “We very much hope to see progress on a substantive code of conduct to help ensure stability in this vital region,” Kerry told his ASEAN counterparts Monday. On the final day of a flurry of back-to-back diplomatic events in the sultanate, Kerry also was to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. [AFP]

BIMP-EAGA intensifies hybrid rice and corn seeds production O

FFICIALS from the four-country grouping Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) have pushed for massive hybrid rice and corn seeds production in a bid to become food self-sufficient by 2016. Members of the BIMP-EAGA Agribusiness Cluster have convened in Puerto Princesa recently to discuss the status of agribusiness-related projects and map steps to further boost their contribution to the sub-regional cooperation. The BIMP-EAGA agribusiness cluster, which is presently chaired by the Philippines through the Department of Agriculture (DA), falls under the sub-region’s food basket and food security pillar. “Achieving food security is one of BIMP-EAGA’s top priorities,” said Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chair and Philippine-EAGA Signing Minister Luwalhati Antonino. She cited that moving along the sub-region’s food basket initiatives, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has identified an initial 30,000 hectares in Mindanao and Palawan, for production of hybrid rice. She added that the promotion

of hybrid rice by DA is an integral part of the Aquino government’s thrust on food security to attain sufficiency in rice and other major staples. “A food and logistics corridor development program is also being developed to propel BIMP-EAGA’s growing agribusiness industries,” said Antonino while adding that “through this corridor, Mindanao’s contribution to the sub-region will focus on food products and agribusiness development.” In hybrid rice farming, a one-hectare farm is expected to harvest about 10 tons of rice, which is estimated to yield an average profit of about US$4,000 per hectare at a rate of US$400 per ton, for every planting season. Inbred or regular rice farming however is expected to produce a maximum yield of about four tons per hectare every planting cycle. Rice production has an average of two planting cycles in a year. “Since hybrid rice offers higher yield factor, the production of the variety strategically supports BIMP-EAGA’s food basket strategy,” said Jonathan Miral, MinDA international relations chief. In a related development, the Asian Hybrid Inc., a company

based in the Philippines has already passed Indonesia’s hybrid corn seed standards and is now operating a 2,500-hectare demo farm in Jember District and another 4,000 hectares in the district of Malang, both in Java.

“The company is closely working with its Indonesian counterparts to identify more production sites particularly in the country’s BIMP-EAGA focus areas, which include Sulawesi,” Miral said. [MinDA]

The Inauguration I

N some jurisdiction like the United States, it’s called the Inauguration. It is where a major political leader begins his term of office, usually by being sworn in to office and making his inaugural speech. It is traditionally a lavish ceremony held before a huge crowd. In the Philippines, it goes by simply as oath-taking ceremony. As June 30 marks the beginning of the term of office of the country’s elected officials, our own elected officials celebrate the beginning of their term in public service by taking their respective oath. They all came with their finest barongs and ternos, tuxedoes and gowns. They are surrounded by their loving families and supporters typical of Pinoy culture—tightly-knit and arms locked in unity. A few minutes or hours after they

By Lean Daval Jr. walked by in their glamorous and dignified garb, it’s time to roll up the sleeves for the men, let the hair down for the women and buckle down to work for everyone. To the next three years, let’s get the talk to walk.

Serious work means tackling the vital challenges being faced by the various communities they govern. In reality, most of these challenges are problems that they promised to solve during the election campaign. When it comes to challenges, nothing more takes priority here and now than climate change. As a people, Filipinos, wherever they are, have had a bitter taste of a disaster or two associated with this crazy climatic pattern. All the speeches delivered by newly-inducted public officials indicate a degree of concern over the phenomenon and their plans on how to prepare for and mitigate the horrific effects

that it brings. In the Davao region, none of the political leaders made light of the subject, most especially governors Arthur T. Uy of Compostela Valley and Corazon N. Malanyaon of Davao Oriental, who vowed to lead their constituents out of the misery that they have suffered and are still suffering as a result of the unprecedented battering they got from howler Pablo last December. Indeed, climate change is the greatest challenge faced by the newly sworn in officials of the country -- – how they will be able to rally their constituents in preparing for disasters spawned by this natural abnormality and in restoring their battered communities and lives if calamities do recur. Climate change is really about human survival here in our country and elsewhere in the world.

Tough action is a Duterte trademark

OTENTIAL STABILITY IN BUSINESS, BUREAUCRACY AND POLITICS – There is certainly plenty of reason for the Dabawenyos to be oddly optimistic that the wheels of government will continue to turn in an orderly fashion in Davao City’s highest office. The motivation is that newly-installed City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte now is the man at bat. After serving three terms as city mayor, one term as congressman and another term as vice mayor, aside from being a city prosecutor prior to joining politics, Mayor Rody is now back where he rightfully belongs. His comeback was a reminder that after almost two decades in government service, Duterte still has much to do to develop the city – socially, politically and economically. This, plus the robust economic development initiated by his daughter former city mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio – which still intensified the need for more dynamic leadership. As everyone knows, tough action and strong words is a Duterte trademark and it is obviously appreciated by the city’s more than 1.4 million populations. The solidity of public support for Duterte leads to a potential stability in local business, the bureaucracy and politics. Indeed, many see in him a leader who has mastered the art of the possible in Davao City – and could push for real change. He is seen as a leader willing to take necessary action and cracks the whip if need be to eliminate corruption and other misconducts in the city government. He is not all talk either and much has been made of his levelheaded views. Any major initiative on the economy, social and political development had to wait until he is in charge. Well, now is the appropriate

C

VANTAGE POINTS

time to make all that aspirations come true. Moves to match words with action have become more and more urgent. Immediately right after his assumption, Mayor Rody has been notified through survey results about the four major prevailing problems confronting the city populace. These priority concerns are: severe flooding, sickening monstrous traffic snarls, rampant squatting and waning peace and order campaign. As far as the Dabawenyos are concerned, Duterte is an achiever and no pen-pushing government executive who rarely endeavors out of his scented and air-conditioned office. If he has something important to do, one day people might see him on the riverfront discussing plans to relocate illegal settlers, replacing encroaching housing structures with walkways and park areas. Although the scheme will displace families who have been squatting and living there for decades, the welfare of the majority must take precedence over the interest of the few. And the next day, he might be on the other side of the city checking on the progress on the construction of a flood-control and drainage system, looking on the traffic situation or maybe examining the crime index to determine if the rules and procedures on peace and security are strictly carried out to the letter. Clamping on litterbugs, clearing

the squatters’ areas, cleaning clogged canals and waterways and easing out traffic jams is one thing. Transforming a bustling and sprawling city like Davao into a peaceful and livable metropolis is another. Since the time he became city mayor, Duterte already sees Davao City as a role model. It used to suffer from lawlessness and anarchy, but it has a couple of advantages – he was able to tame the street bullies and thugs then and more so now that he is back into action. Will Duterte retain his anti-crime and pro-business fervor? The total war against crime is the “single most important” factor in the city’s socio-economic development. His legion of admirers and supporters say the forces that have driven him to pursue the crackdown on lawlessness are at the core of his character forged by his righteous belief and his experiences as a long-serving public servant. However, he could not please everybody. His political detractors and adversaries have accused him of circumventing the law – in many occasions. They are trying to throw as many skeletons into his cupboard designed mainly at diminishing his status and image before the eyes of the people. A reputation for bold, compelling action and passionate words, so unlike the typical politicians, people always have high expectations of their comebacking mayor. What he has done – that’s being decisive; the substance is in the decisions that he actually makes. It’s not for him to project himself as strong, dominant, tough and a resolute leader. It is for the people to decide. In the next three years and beyond, Davao City may be for some real action during Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s reign.

peers. From a population of less than one million several decades ago, today it is home to some 1.4 million souls, give or take a million or two. It is a city where thriving businesses are racing against each other to develop more satellite communities as extensions of the downtown area. High-rise buildings are going up like mad and the end of all this rush among investors oozing with billions of what some wags jokingly describe as the “root of evil (money)” to outdo each other. Where and when will all this “sweet madness” come to an end? Nobody knows. In fact, nobody dares to even think it will all end. Perhaps, only when worlds collide. For now, everyone is gung-ho over Davao City’s transformation eversince seven-term mayor, Rodrigo R. Duterte, appeared on the city’s horizon following the fall of the Marcos dictatorship and was appointed OIC city vice mayor. From there onward, the former otherwise unassuming assistant city prosecutor’s public image gradually loomed large in the public’s mind after winning the mayoralty race in

1988. From there, there was no stopping his rise to political prominence. Perhaps, it was his experience handling criminal cases as a prosecutor that made him realize that among society’s enemies, aside from grinding poverty, is criminality. Under his watch, the war against criminality had become somewhat of an obsession with Rody Duterte. As long as he could have his way in the campaign against these dregs of society, there would be no let-up in seeing to it that Davao City would remain comparatively safe for its peace-loving inhabitants. And a dangerous place for criminals. I was once interviewd by the crew of a Manila-based TV network who were in Davao to cover a rally held by some members of local media to protest the ambush-killing of a radio commentator and the killing of crime suspects by members of the so-called DDS (Davao Death Squad). The question was simple and to the point: “Is it true that there is a reign of terror in Davao City?” My reply: “Yes. Criminals are being terrorized.” Mayor Rody Duterte called a spade a spade when he publicly announced time and again: “Criminals have no place in Davao City! They can leave it vertically, or horizontally.” I don’t think he was referring to infrastructure. Was he?

Who’s terrorizing who?

RIMINALS come and go, but crime incidents of various types--petty, heinous, and the in-between kind-somehow remain. That’s because the incarceration, death or even complete rehabilitation of criminals do not extinguish crime itself. As long as there are human beings on planet Earth, there will always be a need to survive hunger and loneliness, hence there will always be a struggle for food and someone to share it with and someone to love for one’s personal happiness. That’s when trouble begins brought about by man’s struggle for survival, which in turn spawns selfishness, greed and the need to be strong and powerful. That has always been the case throughout the history of mankind. All the wars fought on this planet had been about ultimate survival of the race--whatever the color of skin, be it white, brown, or yellow. Haven’t you ever wondered why, despite the creation of the United Nations at the end of World War II, the most devastating of all wars in terms of the number of people killed, maimed, orphaned and the destruction of entire cities, communities, infrastructure, agriculture, economies, there have always been little wars, big wars at any given time somewhere in the world? Which brings us back to where we began this piece. Criminality. Dabawenyos take so much pride in how their city has prospered in good times and bad and today finds itself the envy of many of its

The Fountain of Youth

W

HERE can we find the fountain of youth? T h e question presupposes that there is a fountain of youth. Is there really such a fountain? Whenever we mention that fountain of youth, the first thing that comes to mind is Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer and colonizer who founded Puerto Rico in 1508 and discovered Florida in 1513. Ponce de Leon, was the first high-ranking European to have heard of the fountain of youth, and logically, led the first organized search for the fountain. But before we join De Leon’s expedition, let us first know what is this fountain of youth. There are two legends surrounding it. First, is the European legend which is about the miraculous waters –or body of water – in the New World that preserve life and renew vigor. (Hello, Ram baby). The second legend is the Semitic (Afro-Asiad) legend that speaks of a river of immortality. Through the passage of time, these two legends were fused, and this gave birth to the belief in an earthly paradise or golden age in which human beings or mortals would be free from diseases and the effects of old age. After serving as military governor of Puerto Rico, Ponce de Leon led a privately-funded expedition in search of Bimini Islands where the fountain of youth was believed to be located. (Bimini is a group of islands northwest of the Bahamas Islands off the Straits of Florida.) This was in 1513. A month later in April, Ponce de Leon landed on an island which abounded in flowers and greenery. He named it Florida. The expedition sailed further north and explored the west coast, then returned to Puerto Rico. He then went to Spain to secure the title military governor of Florida and Bimini. With the title of military governor, he returned to Florida, but was rudely welcomed by unfriendly Indians. He suffered arrow wound and had to go back to Havana where he later died. History is silent on whether he found the fountain of youth. And so, to this day, 500 years after the failed search for the fountain of youth, no explorer or adventurer of the high seas, has ever come out to claim that he has found the fountain of youth. But wait. Here’s good news to all SCCP – Senior Citizens Conference of the Philippines – a Filipino who has never sailed the Seven Seas, has declared during his 79th birthday celebration, that the fountain of youth is right in Metro Manila. He said he has found it in a girl named Zsa Zsa.@

Transport leader.. FFROM 1 suspect then walked to a waiting motorcycle and rode towards the Times beach area. It may be recalled that Petalcorin had earlier filed a case against Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) director Benjamin Go and Carlos Cirilo. In a radio interview, Marilyn Petalcorin, wife of the victim that she had entrusted the

life of her husband to God even as she recalled the death of Emilio Rivera, chairman of the Matina Transportation Corporation (Matransco). Emilio Rivera, 45, resident of Purok 2, Paquito Gumalang in the city’s Baguio district was shot dead on the corner of Mc Arthur Highway and Tahimik Avenue in Bangkal last January 28.

Mrs. Petalcorin said her husband had planned to go to the LTFRB office when he was shot killed. “Nanglaba ko atong higayuna sa balay ug nakabati ko ug tulo ka sunod-sunod nga buto,” she said in a radio interview. Davao City Police Office (DCPO) chief Ronald dela Rosa said the investigation is ongoing.

reprimanded some of the councilors who were walking around and talking to fellow councilors while the inaugural speeches were delivered on the floor. “It was meant to remind them to respect and listen to those who were speaking, after all, it is in the plenary rule to listen,” he said in vernacular. After banging the gavel to begin the session, the first termer vice mayor-son of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte looked like a veteran on the bench, keeping a cool composure and speaking in commanding orders like he has mastered the rudiments of parliamentary procedures. His longer stint as barangay captain, however, surfaced in some occasions calling a council member “Kagawad” which is the official designation of a barangay legislator. But he took it in stride, laughing at his own mistakes

and in times when he could not keep his poise going, he banged the gavel for recess. There were a number of times he called recess of one to two minutes during the entire proceedings. Among the major strides the 17th council passed yesterday were the adoption of the rules of the previous council save for some minor amendments like moving the session time earlier from 2 pm to 10 am every Tuesday and the division of the previously joint Committee on Energy, Transportation and Communication into two committees—one for Energy and another for Transportation and Communication. Vice Mayor Paolo sent out a strong reminder to the councilors that if they do not come early, he would adjourn the session and mark everyone absent. All councilors were

present in yesterday’s session. Other major developments in the first session of the city’s august body were the election of councilor Tomas Monteverde as floor leader with 15 votes over councilor Bonifacio Militar who got 10. Councilor Militar was elected assistant floor leader. Councilor Bernie Al-ag was elected president pro-tempore, after Jimmy Dureza withdrew his nomination to “save time.” Meantime, Vice Mayor Paolo said he is negotiating with a certain TV station to telecast each session, through a program called “Pulong-pulong ni Pulong.” This would be discussed next week. He said, this program will have the committee head of the concerned committee to present the issue at hand to the TV Program, so that it will be easier for the public to know.

Duterte revealed during his initial talks to the rebels not to hurt the soldiers. He said he will one day go to the rebels’ lair to talk to LeoncioPitao alias KumanderParago about the situation of the solders. He said saving the soldiers is a winding pursuit. “The armed people may be the ones who held the soldiers, but there is also a need to talk to the National Democratic Front which controls the overall situation,” Duterte said. He also assured the family of the soldiers that the captives are being treated well. Duterte said he has

KumanderParago’s commitment not to hurt the soldiers. “I have the word of Parago. He is a man of his word. We deal with honor here. Until then, we will find ways to link up with the rebels,” he said. Duterte remained hopeful that the soldiers will be released eventually. Corporal Emmanuel Quezon, Privates First Class Ronald Gura, Bernie Padilla, and DonatoEstandia and Private MartenianoPasiagas, Jr., all members of the peace and development team under the 60th Infantry Battalion were going to the market to buy food supplies for their scheduled feed-

ing program when they were held by the rebels who were manning the roadblock. On the soldiers’ commanding officer was spared after he jumped off the motorcycle unto a ravine, when he noticed the unusual behaviour of the armed group manning the barricade. Families of soldiers sought the help of the church group, “Sowing the Seeds for Peace,” to facilitate the freedom of the kin. The group facilitated the soldiers’ families with Duterte who assured the soldiers’ safety even in the hands of the rebels. [PIA 11/ Joey Sem G. Dalumpines]

Saudi extends grace period for undocumented workers

H

EEDING appeals from the Philippine government and other labor-sending nations, Saudi Arabia has extended until November 3 its amnesty period for undocumented workers, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday. “Undocumented Filipinos are advised to take advantage of this extension and immediately proceed to the concerned Saudi government agencies or seek the assistance of our embassy and consulate in Saudi Arabia for their repatriation or the regularization of their status,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez told a press briefing. Hernandez also advised

Filipinos in Saudi to cooperate with the embassy and consulate “to make the repatriation and regularization procedures more efficient.” The crackdown against illegal workers, which led to thousands of arrests and deportations, started on March 28 because of the “Saudization” policy, which encourages the employment of Saudi nationals in private firms. Saudi King Abdullah first ordered a three-month delay to the arrests of illegal migrant workers last April 6. A four-month extension was again approved by the Saudi King following appeals from the Philippines

and other countries with undocumented workers in Saudi Arabia - home to more than one million Filipinos. The previous crackdown forced hundreds of illegal Filipino workers to set up camps outside the premises of the country’s consulate in Jeddah and the embassy in Riyadh, hoping their presence near a diplomatic mission would give them protection and prevent their arrest. “We are happy the King extended the grace period so that all those who want to be repatriated will be repatriated and those who would like their papers to be legalized can stay,” Hernandez said. the Ateneo de Davao University. Ramirez has been with ADDU as sports director for three years after a failed candidacy in the 2010 local elections where he ran for city councilor. Should he return to government service, it could be a little complicated for Ramirez. One, civil service law requires he has to terminate his employment with Ateneo. Two, there have been published reports Ramirez allegedly has a pending case with the Sandiganbayan involving his stint as PSC chairman, although he has not commented on this. Ramirez ended his stint with the PSC in January 2010 and returned to Davao City to seek public office. He failed in his first try and later accepted a consultant’s position with the city government under then Mayor Sara Duterte. He later on worked as athletic director of

thePhilippine Women’s College before hooking up with ADDU in 2011. The surfacing of Ramirez as possible sports chief was met with mixed reactions from the sports community in the city. Veteran sportswriter Charles Maxey of Sunstar Davao said Ramirez is a good choice. “He is the right man for the job. The city needs a competent sports leader like (him).” Davao City Sports Council president Ben Sur said: “He is the perfect choice. He has the leadership to help and push the sports program of Mayor Duterte. He is an old hand in sports who knows how to manage and get the cooperation of the sports community.” Sur added that the DCSC will support Mayor Duterte and Ramirez. There were also those who believe otherwise.

A sports association head who requested anonymity said he objects to the system of “recycling” leaders. “Patay, samot wala mi makuha na support. Okay lang private sponsors lang gihapon mi (We’re dead. The more we will not get any support. It’s okay though, we will still have private sponsors),” the sports association head said. Another wellknown sports personality said: “Wala na bang ibang magaling diyan? Pweda ba yan na may kaso pa siya with PSC? (Are there no other choices? Is it possible because he still has a case with the PSC?)” Lito Delos Reyes, president of SCOOP Davao said, “I just hope he will also revamp and make big changes in the office and remove or transfer the old and unreliable faces. Walang kapamilya o kamag-anak.”

students in the city will receive a booster dose of Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) and Tetanus-Diphtheria vaccine that will be administered by DOH and Deped. “Before immunization day, the DOH vaccination team will conduct an orientation for teachers and students of different schools, after which a screening of students will follow to make sure students readiness to undergo immuniza-

tion,” Montejo said, adding that a parent’s consent is required of female students. Montejo said that it is important for the female adolescent to receive the vaccine to protect not only themselves but the health of their future children as well. “Immunization is essential not only for children but also for adults and this will prevent neonatal tetanus in newborn infants,” she explained.

Adolescents make up a significant proportion of each country’s population and significantly contributed to the labor force of the country. Considering that they represent as the most active group, they are the most vulnerable to vaccine preventable diseases due to risky behavior and potential for outbreaks in school and community, especially of measles and diphtheria.

Cyber espionage, Android malware dominate in 2013 K

ASPERSKY Lab, a leading secure content and threat management solutions, said that an increased number of alleged state-sponsored cyber-attacks were recorded by the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN). KSN is a distributed system that collects data about existing threats in real time. It also effectively identifies unknown threats and their sources and reacts quickly to protect users against them. According to Kaspersky Lab’s latest report called IT Threat Evolution: Q1 2013, the first three months of the year turned out to be full of incidents, especially when it came to cyber espionage and cyber weapons.

(Advanced Persistent Threat), allegedly composed of Chinese hackers, has also become a major threat. Kaspersky Lab cited a report from cyber-security company Mandiant that emphasized APT1 has been operating since 2006 and has since managed to steal huge amounts of data from around 141 organizations. Kaspersky Lab also noted that these massive attacks could not be possible without real support from hundreds of people and a developed, modern infrastructure. Denis Maslennikov, Kaspersky Lab Security Expert and author of the report, said that, China has faced accusations of its involvement in cyber attacks against govern-

Cyber espionage and cyber weapons Among the most persistent cyber espionage network was the global operation known as Red October, which targeted various government offices, diplomatic offices and companies worldwide. Kaspersky Lab reported that Red October has been active for at least five years and have expanded their network of infected systems over 60 domain names spread across several host servers across the world. Red October’s techniques have also expanded to infecting and stealing through USB devices and smartphones. Another group, APT1

ment agencies and organizations in countries around the world. “There is nothing particularly surprising about the Chinese government’s firm rejection of the assertions made in the Mandiant report,” Maslennikov added. Another group called TeamSpy has been seen to target high-ranking politicians and human rights advocates in Eastern Europe and commonwealth of independent states (CIS). While not as sophisticated as other cyber attackers, many of the attacks from TeamSpy were mostly successful. It also reported that there were cyber attacks against Tibetan and Uyghur activists.

The perpetrators used Mac OS, Windows, and Android as platforms for these targeted attacks.

Mobile threats Kaspersky Lab reported that mobile threats have also been increasing with Android as a leading target platform. Over the last three months, Kaspersky Lab has found 20,000 new modifications of popular mobile malware. This is nearly half of what KSN found in the whole of 2012. Kaspersky Lab added that 99.9 percent of all new mobile threat detections targeted the Android operating system. SMS Trojans are still the most prevalent category of mobile threats accounting for 63.6 percent of all attacks. Among the most dangerous programs for Android are FakeInst, Plangton, Opfake, Agent, AveaSMS, Walien,

Trackplus, Copycat, Fav, Penetho, SMSReg, and FaceNiff. Kaspersky Lab also found new mobile mal-

ware called Perkel, a banking Trojan and MTK Botnet, which has allegedly infected over one million Android devices mostly in China. “The number of apps for Android is constantly on the rise, and it is often a challenge to gain popularity with users — which is why these illegitimate tactics are becoming all the more common,” said Maslennikov. Statistics on attacks The report noted that at least 1.3 billion threats were detected and neutralized by Kaspersky Lab. It also indicated that the US (25.1 percent) remained as the most targeted country used to seed malware, followed by Russia (19.2 percent), The Netherlands (14.4 percent), Ger-

many (11.5 percent), Ukraine (3.3 percent), and Great Britain (3.0 percent). Other countries only contributed around 1.8 percent or less. Countries with the highest risk of infection from malware is topped by Tajikistan followed by Armenia, Russia , Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Georgia, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Greece, Italy, India, Algeria, Lithuania, and Latvia. Likewise, KSN said that there are countries considered “safe zones” against malware infection. These are Japan, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Switzerland Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and Norway. Fight against mobile malware, cyber espionage Jimmy Fong, Chan-

nel Sales Director for Kaspersky Lab Southeast Asia said that while the Philippines seems relatively safe from major mobile malware and cyber espionage, he warned that attacks against government institutions and corporations is possible. He added that recent news reports of massive denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against a number of government websites could be used as indicators of what could possibly happen. “These attacks can be dangerous for any institution especially now that the Philippines is linked to other countries via broadband Internet connections. Security even in the virtual world is the responsibility of everyone and putting in place the best security solutions is paramount,” according to Fong.

ANOTHER ERUPTION. Bong Go fired 32 points for CMO in a win over IBP during the “Pasasalamat ni Mayor Rody” basketball exhibition games at the DCRC on Monday night. Lean Daval Jr.

HE barnstorming Champions for Christ (CFC) defeated Matina Enclaves-City Mayor’s Office, 67 – 56, in the first outing of their scheduled two-game exhibition series before a capacity crowd at the Davao City Recreation Center Almendras Gym on Monday night. The US-based missionary basketball team staged a late onslaught to pull away with the victory in the initial meeting with the Enclaves of basketball patron Glenn Escandor in the event dubbed as “Pasasalamat ni Mayor Rody Duterte to the People of Davao”. The bible-preaching Champions closed out the game with an incredible, 15 – 2, run in the final four minutes as Matina Enclaves, formerly known as The Royal Mandaya Hotel, found no strategy to stop the rampaging Americans. The Champions scored 13 points as Cornell, Flowers and White had nine baskets each for CFC which shrugged off a poor third period performance. The Americans, bannered by two seven-foot US NCAA players, were leading in the entire first half, taking a 34 – 29 lead at the break. But the Matina Enclaves-CMO broke loose in the third canto with former PBA standout Nino Gelig sparking a run that gave

them a 47 – 43 advantage going to the final period. The Christopher “Bong” Go-managed Matina Enclaves-CMO squad gained control in the early going of the pay off period but it was short lived as the Americans bounced back relentlessly to clinch the win. Gelig topscored for Matina Enclaves-CMO with 16 baskets. Jumabon Bulac, a JMC King stalwart, and Dabawenyo PBA player John Ferriols had 11 and 10 points respectively. Marcel Antonio Melendres, Escandor Group Basketball Operations Executive Officer, said the team will not leave any stone unturned to “level the score” at the end of the two-day exhibition games. “We suffered defeat by the breaks of the game. Hopefully, it would go our way next time around,” said Melendres, who played a key role in the formation of the Matina Enclaves. The team took the services of other PBA players Eddie Laure and Benedict Fernandez. Former pro’s Poch Junio and Mark Andaya were also in the team. The Americans previously came out victorious in the series of exhibition games in the country, beating the likes of Global Port of the PBA and the MP Pacman Warriors of Sarangani Province. (RB)

Go sparks CMO win over IBP

C

HRISTOPHER “Bong” Go steered the City Mayor’s Office (CMO) to a 76 – 71 victory over Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in the preliminary game of the “Pasasalamat ni Mayor Rody Duterte to the People of Davao” basketball event that mainly features the visiting US-based team versus the Matina Enclaves-CMO. Go erupted for 32 points, including five triples, to carry CMO on his shoulders before a packed Davao City Recreation Center. The spitfirish executive assistant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte scored eight straight points, uncorking three pointer after three pointer, midway of the second period to spark a pivotal run that set the tone of the

game. His back-to-back treys and the other one from Escandor Group of Companies boss Glenn Escandor marked the dominating second period that ended with CMO up by 17, 46 – 29. Joel Aberilla contributed 12 baskets for CMO that outscored IBP, 28-13, in the second frame. IBP mounted a comeback in the pay off period behind Kenneth Flaviano and Warren Cloribel but it was held off by the CMO to seal the victory. Flaviano scored 22 baskets for IBP which stayed in step for a quarter and a half before CMO’s outburst in the second canto. Cloribel had 16. CMO was only up by 2, 18 – 16, at the end of the first canto. (RB)

WOMEN

Party of pink It’s amazing how creative and imaginative kids are nowadays. Even at a very early age, they are capable of visualizing scenes, putting together ideas and turning them into one big event. Take 4 years old Adriana “Yana” Recto, for example. “She conceptualized her own birthday party. She was the driving force behind all the planning and preparation. She chose the color, theme, cake, and even the design of her dress. She had all these ideas of what she wanted to see and share with her

friends,” explained mommy Chiqui. Every little girl deserves a great party, and every able and loving parent will do everything to make it memorable and special. Yana’s 4th birthday party 2 weeks ago was a hit among little girls and

mommies. The Hello Kitty theme brought back memories of childhood, even to me (who was one of the many moms playing a supporting role during the party games). Hello Kitty is one of the most relatable characters among women of various ages. Imagine

the excitement inside the room when Hello Kitty was called in by the host.

Cameras started clicking from all directions as little girls ran to welcome the mascot. The entire ballroom was frosted with pink, just as Yana wanted. Even the party guests wore pink. Yana was wearing a full princess gown made by John Belandres of Atelier 115. “Surprisingly, she’s not wearing her tiara today. To think, we usually see her walking around the house wearing something sparkly on her head,” quipped the doting mom. “Yana was so anxious about the party and I had difficulty putting her to sleep the night before. Let’s just say it was sugar rush that kept her wide awake. Not that she needed to get a small taste of her Hello Kitty cupcakes to fire up her energy. The mere sight of the cute Hello Kitty cupcakes made by Joel Rodri-

guez of Osvaldo’s got her all hyper and ecstatic.” “Motherhood can be sweet, challenging, beautiful, frightening, overwhelming but fulfilling. I really try and give my best when it comes to my kids. Yana deserves this little funfair because she is such a good daughter and sister to her little brother. She has such a strong character and well-rounded personality. She’s talented, bubbly, assertive, and reasons out to get her ideas heard. My husband and I are blessed to have such wonderful kids. I want our friends and family to take part in this joy and celebration life.” “To my dear Yana, I wish you all the best in life. I hope and pray that you will grow up to be the kind of person God wants you to be and that all your dreams will come true.”

M. Lhuillier celebrates Environment Month

Donates 222 old mobile phones to Globe Telecom recycling program IN celebration of the environment month, leading non-bank financial services provider M. Lhuillier donated 222 old mobile phones, batteries and chargers to Globe Telecom recycling program to help promote proper e-waste disposal and educate the public about the potential environmental harm of improperly disposed electronic gadgets.

This also coincided with Globe Telecom’s twoday recyclables collection event which encouraged employees to convert their trash to cash for a clutterfree environment. Proceeds from both activities will go to the protection of the Philippine tarsier and its habitat through the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Inc., the primary beneficiary of the recycling program. “We decided to participate in this program as we support a better and cleaner process of disposing the defective units to protect the environment for the future generation,” said MLFSI’s Executive Vice President, Mr. Charles L. Lhuillier. The old cellular phones and accessories were used as service units of M. Lhuillier branches. “Being a company committed to environment sustainability, Globe takes

We continuously create initiatives as part of our commitment to care for our planet such as energy management, reduction of greenhouse emissions and waste recycling. This program, should serve as a reminder to everyone on the importance of responsible disposal of old mobile phones and its impact on the environment,” said Yoly C. Crisanto, Head of Globe Corporate Communications. Talking more about the rationale for the program, she added: “We want to ensure that old cell phones are not unnecessarily dumped to our landfills to minimize their potential environmental impact. Old cell phones and their

batteries have toxic components such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury as well as plastic parts with brominated flame retardant which can pollute our environment and harm our health.” Aside from preventing environment pollution, recycling also has other benefits since precious metals and plastics are recovered from re-manufacture. By recycling, less energy is used than mining virgin metals and producing virgin plastics. It also saves on landfill space. So far, a total of 3,850 mobile phone have already been collected nationwide and about P500,000 was donated to the Foundation.

Pierce Brosnan’s daughter dies of cancer at 41 PIERCE Brosnan has suffered an eerily familiar tragic loss.

The actor’s daughter Charlotte died Friday at 41 after battling ovarian cancer, the same disease that claimed her mother, Cassandra Harris, in 1991. “On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer,” Brosnan said in a statement obtained by E! News. “She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean.” He continued: “Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.” Charlotte, who died in London, was one of Harris’ two children from a previous marriage whom Brosnan adopted after their father passed away in 1986. He and Harris had another child together, son Sean, and he has two sons, Dylan and Paris, with wife Keely Shaye Smith. Brosnan, who plays a widower dating a woman battling cancer in his latest film,

To watch someone you love have their life eaten away— bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease— becomes an indelible part of your psyche. It certainly did for me and, of course, when I received this script, the challenge of playing this part was not lost on me.” There is no indication in the story that he revealed what his family was again going through at the time.

Chrissy Teigen’s sexy GQ photo shoot outtake SERIOUSLY. When it comes to pics of Chrissy Teigen, is there really such a thing as a so-called outtake?

Well, believe it or not, the answer is yes. Although, in this case, that’s not a negative. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! Yep. GQ has just released several new photos that didn’t quite make the cut when the magazine was putting together its July issue featuring John Legend’s 27-yearold fiancée in various states of undress. In this shot, for instance, Teigen is seen seductively lounging on a bed with a sheet barely covering her naked bod. While the pic doesn’t have her posing completely naked like that other GQ photo unveiled last month, we’re certain-

Of course, Teigen is not one to stay silent. “Really tired of men being such critical pricks,” she tweeted on June 22. “Seriously. All day I just get jabs about my face and body from men.” Teigen later wrote, “I know it seems so stupid but reading s--t like this all day every day. F--k off, already,” later adding, “It’s easy to tell someone not to care. But the fact is,

it gets to me. Sigh. Rant done.” Meanwhile, Teigen was doing anything but ranting to E! News last month when talking about preparing for her and Legend’s upcoming nuptials. “I’m not going to do very much. It’s a wedding dress,” she said. “I don’t think too much about it. If anything I’m like, ‘OK, I gotta get my arms on point,’ but I don’t care much about anything else. I just want to have a good time.” E! News Online

GLOBAL RESPECT Neymar sets tone for 2014 World Cup

NEW LEADER. After leading Brazil to the Confederations Cup, Neymar has established that he has what it takes to lead the Brazilians at the 2014 World Cup at home.

R

IO DE JANEIRO -- After a strong showing at the Confederations Cup, Neymar showed Brazilian fans that he has what it takes to lead the national team at the World Cup next year. The 21-year-old Neymar was voted player of the tournament and was decisive in Brazil’s 3-0 victory against Spain in Sunday’s final at the Maracana Stadium. He arrived at the World Cup warm-up tournament after a series of lackluster performances with the national team, but is leaving acclaimed both in Brazil and abroad. The Confederations Cup marks the coming of age for Neymar, giving him his first title with Brazil’s senior team just before he makes his much-anticipated move to European soccer to join Barcelona. ‘’It turned out to be even better than I expected,’’ Neymar said. ‘’I’m really happy to have played well and that the Selecao came out with the title in the end.’’ Neymar has been touted as the future of Brazilian soccer for some time, but until now he hadn’t been able to replicate his

club success with the national team. That raised doubts about whether he could be considered the player carrying Brazil’s hopes for a world title at home next year. Neymar was among the players loudly booed by more than 50,000 Brazilian fans after a disappointing draw in a friendly with Chile two months ago. He had been mediocre in the other two competitions he played with Brazil, the 2011 Copa America and the 2012 Olympic tournament. ‘’I’m really happy with the way things happened,’’ Neymar said. ‘’I hope it can continue like that, but I have to take it one tournament at a time.’’ Neymar was selected the man of the match in four of the five Confederations Cup matches, including in the final at the Maracana. He was in the play that led to Brazil’s first goal by Fred just two minutes into the match, then scored the second with a powerful left-footed strike from inside the area and set up Fred’s last goal without even touching the ball. He also made the move that led to Gerard Pique’s red card in the

68th minute, forcing the defender to commit a foul to stop him from breaking through for what could have been an easy goal. Neymar had scored remarkable goals in each of the team’s first three matches in the warm-up tournament among continental champions, finishing with four in five matches. But before Neymar is back with Brazil for the World Cup, he will have another challenge in Spain. Within a couple of weeks, he will be reporting to Barcelona, joining many of the players whom he beat on Sunday. ‘’It was an honor to play against them,’’ Neymar said. ‘’Obviously it’s going to be a big change, but it’s for the good, I’m joining one of the greatest teams in the world, a team with great players, so I’m happy and I hope to adapt as fast as possible and then play really well in the World Cup next year.’’ While Brazilian players were still celebrating after the final whistle, Neymar took the time to go across the field to compliment many of his new Barcelona teammates. He never hid that he had

a lot of admiration and respect for the Spaniards. ‘’I just told them they had a good match,’’ he said. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari had said before the final that ‘’Barcelona must be beaming seeing what (Neymar) has been doing here.’’ Before traveling to Spain, Neymar will join Lionel Messi for a charity game in Peru on Tuesday, and on Friday he is expected to undergo tonsil surgery.

CP3 stays, Howard has 3 suitors C HRIS Paul’s answer was brief, just like his time on the free agent market. ‘’I’M IN!!!’’ he wrote Monday on Twitter. He will be staying with the Clippers, the longtime losers he helped turned into a division champion in just two seasons. Dwight Howard will need more time to think. Free agency opened Monday in the NBA with the focus on the pair of Los Angeles All-Stars, though Paul took himself off the market only hours after shopping

season started. Agent Leon Rose confirmed Paul’s return, which had been expected after the Clippers signed Doc Rivers as their new coach. The Clippers can pay the two-time Olympic gold medalist around $108 million for five years. Howard can make even more by staying with the Lakers, but that won’t stop him from looking elsewhere. He met with the Houston Rockets early Monday, the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks also are interested, and the Lakers have

said repeatedly they want to keep him. The Rockets got the first crack at persuading him to leave. With Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler joining its contingent, Houston pitched Howard on joining All-Star James Harden. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey wrote on Twitter that it was a great meeting with Howard and that having Olajuwon and Drexler there ‘’made it obvious how (Howard and Harden) could be the next (great) big/ wing combo.’’

SHOCKING

SERENA

Lisicki stuns Williams in 4 round th

F

OR all her brilliance and experience and that bloody-minded determination of a champion, there were two things Serena Williams simply could not overcome at Wimbledon on Monday. One was Roundof-16 opponent Sabine Lisicki, who produced the performance of a lifetime to clinch a stunning upset – 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. The other was age. Williams’ astonishing form throughout 2013, good enough for a 34-match winning streak of imperious dominance, was such that she had begun to seem timeless. Yet it must be remembered that Williams is now 31 years old and the exception rather than

the rule in what is increasingly a young woman’s game. While all her advantages in terms of technique and power and court smarts are too much for most of her out-matched opponents to deal with, those capable and brave enough to stick to a certain plan may increasingly find positive traction against her. Lisicki was game to try to wear Williams down, confident she could stick around long enough for the American’s legs and spirit to get weary. She moved Williams around Centre Court, attacking Serena’s ferocious forehand with wide slicing serves and whipping groundstrokes deep

into each corner. It was a tactic that looked ultimately destined to fail when Williams took a 3-0 lead in the deciding set, before Lisicki dug deep once more for a final revival that saw her reel off six out of seven games. At the end, Lisicki sunk forward to her stomach, sobbing in delight and disbelief at the finest moment of her career. The 23-year-old German reached the 2011 semifinals at Wimbledon, and this win continued her extraordinary streak of having beaten the reigning French Open champion at Wimbledon on four occasions.

match.” Williams had no excuses and found some gracious words for Lisicki at the net and some more during her post-match press conference. “It’s not a shock,” Williams said. “She plays really good on grass and has a massive serve. Sabine played really well, she always plays really well at Wimbledon. “Every time I step on the court I am the favorite so I have grown to get used to that. You know it is not going to be an easy match against her. I need to do better. She played a super-aggressive game. When you have absolutely

Djokovic in 17th straight Slam QF

L

ONDON -- In 2011, Novak Djokovic figured out the grass at Wimbledon and found himself holding the trophy at the All England Club for the first time. This year, by his own estimate, ‘’I’m actually playing better tennis on grass than I played two years ago.’’ The top-seeded Djokovic defeated No. 13 Tommy Haas 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Monday to advance to his 17th straight Grand Slam quarterfinal. He still hasn’t lost a set in the tournament. ‘’I feel good about myself in this moment,’’ Djokovic said. ‘’I’m No. 1 in the world. I have no reason to be concerned about my game.’’ Despite falling be-

hind a break in the second set, then enduring a few tense moments in the third, the Serb was never really in trouble as he moved a step closer to his seventh Grand Slam title. In the second set, he got broken to fall behind 3-2, then lost one more game before winning the final four to close it out. In the third set, he failed to serve out the match at 5-3 and wasted a match point in the next game before closing out the tiebreaker with a forehand winner on his fourth match point. He has yet to drop a set in this tournament. ‘’It was a great match from my side,’’ Djokovic said. ‘’Minor setback in the third

set. I allowed him an opportunity to come back to the match. But a great tiebreak and I’m really glad to finish in three.’’ On Wednesday, Djokovic faces No. 7 Tomas Berdych, who reached his first Wimbledon quarterfinal since he was the runner-up in 2010 by beating Bernard Tomic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

But nothing was bigger than this, a triumph over a living legend who was seeking to match the longest winning streak on the women’s tour since the turn of the century. Serena’s sister Venus Williams won 35 straight in 2000. “I am shaking,” said Lisicki. “I am so happy. Serena is such a tough opponent and it is an amazing feeling to w i n t h i s

nothing to lose you can play with so much freedom and you can be so loose.” At certain times in her career Williams’ conditioning has been called into question, but that had nothing to do with this loss. All those years on tour might have taken a step off her speed, but throughout this year she has kept in exceptional shape. This was a defeat as simple as an inspired opponent and the cruel sands of time. Even after 16 Grand Slam titles Serena is not done yet, not by a long shot, though this was a reminder that in the coming months and years her age may be a tougher foe than most of her supposed rivals.
