Davao City Treasurer Rodrigo Riola said Friday via phone denied unconfirmed reports that he would quit his job. He He said, he even met with other city hall heads the whole day Friday, which means, he has no intention of leaving his post.

He did not, however, confirm whether the reports were due to certain city treasurer’s office collectors now under investigation.

He said he ordered his assistant, Anastacio Jardin, to investigate the issue and that there are no results yet.

The issue with the col-

lectors was published in a local daily newspaper June 20 that there were 5 CTO employees being probed for allegedly using remittance money as their personal rolling capital, and that P8 million-worth of remittances were issued late.

Jardin told Edge Davao that not all five collectors are involved in the controversy crime and that there is no basis for the P8 million figure.

He said that they investigated three collectors, and are yet to interview the rest.

As long as investigations are going on, he could give further details on the mstter, he said. EJF

HE 10,000 job orders and contract service workers whose work contracts expire on June 30, may now heave a sigh of relief, because most of them will be re-hired, according to mayor-elect Rody Duterte’s office.

Duterte’s personal assistant Lawrence “Bong” Go texted Thursday Edge Davao, “most of them will be rehired,” when asked about the fate of the 10,000 job orders of the

city.

He said the exact number of employees who will be retained will depend on the needs of each government office.

Human Resource and Management (HRMO) head Erwin Alparaque had told members of media in the iSpeak forum last June 13 that 10,000 job orders and contract service workers will be terminated on June 30.

He said that it would be up to mayor-elect Rody

Duterte to decide whether to retain, add to, or subtract from the current number of employees of the city.

Duterte sdaid through Bong Go that most of the 10,000 will be rehired, since according to Civil Service rules and regulations, the outgoing mayor, Sara Duterte, has no power to decide who will be retained or removed.

RESIDENT Benigno Aquino recently signed into law stiffer penalties for the sale of ‘botcha’ (double-dead) and ‘hot meat’.

It is called Republic Act 10536, or An Act Amending Republic Act 9296 or The Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines to protect people and animals from meat-borne infections.

The term “hot meat” is defined as a carcass or parts of a carcass of food animals that are slaughtered by unaccredited meat establishments and thereby skipped inspec-

tion.

Under the law, the carcass or parts of a carcass of food animals which are slaughtered at unregistered/unaccredited meat establishments and have not undergone the required inspection will be classified as “hot meat.” It also includes undocumented, illegally shipped, and unregistered carcass, parts of carcass and meat products coming from other countries and those that are classified as “hot meat” by the National Meat Inspection Service FHIGHER PENALTIES, 10

N exactly one week, Ms Sara Duterte-Carpio will bow out of office as Davao City’s first lady mayor.

At 33, she is also the youngest ever to occupy the highest government office of this 76-year old city with a daytime popu-

lation of 1.44 million people as of 2012.

How did she fare as leader of this burgeoning melting pot with kingsize problems just like any other growing city of the country?

After it was known that the young chief ex-

ecutive was no longer seeking reelection as mayor late last year, Edge Davao decided to conduct an opinion survey to find out how Dabawenyos rate Sara as city mayor.

The paper sought out 100 people and asked them the question: “In a scale

of 1 to 10, (10 being the highest), how do you rate the overall performance of Sara Duterte-Carpio as city mayor? If you rate 6 or above, you may explain your reason/s for publication.”

The assessment was overwhelmingly in favor

of Sara. She was rated “8 plus,” with many survey respondents rating her “9” and “10”. The survey respondents were generous in showering the lady mayor with superlatives as to her firmness as a leader, excellent choice of members of her team

and several other positive attributes. Curiously, of the 100 asked for their assessment, only 5 people requested anonymity if their comments would be published.

“Because of the good history of Hedcor, the LGU of Mountain Province is in full support of its hydropower project in the community. We are also hoping that this project is the start of more projects in the province,” Mayaen expressed in his speech.

Indigenous people leaders were also given the floor to speak in the ceremony reiterating their gratefulness in choosing Sabangan as the project’s host.

The ceremony includes unveiling of the power house perspective by Hedcor’s Vice President for Business Development Boy Jabonillo and Vice president for Engineering and Construction Chris Sangster. Ceremonial placing of hand prints on a tablet participated by the Hedcor’s president, Mt. Province governor, Sabangan’s vice mayor and Namatec’s barangay captain was undertaken representing lasting ties between the company and community. The tablet will soon be placed at the constructed power house.

The Sabangan hydropower plant utilizes a runof-river scheme that will

harness the waters of Chico River. The project will have a total installed capacity of 14MW that is expected to produce a total of 55 million kW-hour of clean and renewable energy per year.

This is the company’s answer to the government’s advocacy in increasing the renewable energy portfolio in the country. The hydro plant is expected to be operational in 2015.

The community will benefit from the project through its Corporate Social Responsibility focusing on education, health, safety, environment and livelihood. More over, job opportunities will open to the locals during the construction phase and hiring of the locals will be prioritized when the plant becomes operational. To top it all, the host communities including the barangays and the tribal community will be given share from the generation sales of the plant.

Hedcor is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AboitizPower developing run-of-the river hydro power owning 19 plants across Benguet, Ilocos Sur and Davao generating a total of 155MW. It is currently constructing two plants in Davao del Sur.

Mindanao fish canneries owe workers P53M—DOLE

EVERAL fish processing companies in Mindanao found to have violated labor standards were ordered to pay their workers benefits amounting to P52.9 million.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said in a statement released by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Region 12 here that the agency conducted a rapid audit on fish canning companies in the island to ensure the rights and safety of their workers.

“A total of 14,635 workers of 17 fish canning companies in Mindanao, specifically in Regions 9 and 12, will benefit from the Department of Labor and Employment’s rapid audit,” she said.

DOLE’s Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Center conducted the audit recently.

“We wanted to ensure

that our workers receive the benefits due them and that no labor standards and occupational safety and health standards are being violated, and to ensure that the workers are safe while performing their tasks at work,” Baldoz said.

“Most importantly, we would also like to assist these companies on how to voluntarily comply with labor laws,” she added.

Baldoz said that 10 fish canneries in Zamboanga City in Region 9 and seven others in General Santos City in Region 12 were audited to determine the level of compliance of these companies to general labor standards and occupational safety and health rules.

The BWC initially reported that nine fish canning companies have committed labor standards violations such as non-payment of holiday pays, overtime pay, rest day pay and service incentive

leave pay, underpayment of COLA or Cost of Living Allowance, unauthorized wage deductions and inefficient recordkeeping of employment-related documents, according to the statement.

Two companies have been identified violating provisions on the wage of piece-rate workers, payments of night shift differential, anti-child labor law and non-coverage of social welfare benefits, it added.

On safety and health standards, the initial audit report revealed that some fish canning companies also failed to comply with some of the occupational safety and health requirements such as the establishment of safety and health committees at the workplace, employment of an accredited safety and health personnel, provision of adequate personal protective equipment, and administrative reporting to the DOLE, the statement said.

Baldoz did not identify the erring companies, however.

She said that the DOLE offices in Regions 9 and 12 are assisting the companies to effect corrections of the findings and to immediately facilitate the award of the monetary benefits amounting to P52.9 million due to the affected workers of the companies found to have committed the violations.

Baldoz said that representatives of the fish canning companies, during the exit conference with the DOLE, have signified their willingness to restitute their violations on labor laws and safety and health standards.

Reviving the authentic ‘Hilot’

ORE and more massage parlors are sprouting up in Davao City, most of them offering Thai, Swiss, or many other foreign massage techniques.

“Hilot,” an authentic traditional Filipino massage technique, is rarely found in these massage parlors.

“It is time for Filipinos to believe in something that’s our own,” said Gerry Sy, owner of the Shui Hilot Naturopathy Cure Spa, which opened barely three weeks ago on the second floor of the Matina Town Square.

His massage parlor offers the ‘real deal’ as far as “hilot” is concerned.

Those who have tried the “hilot” massage technique, know that it is not the simple massage you get from the usual spa.

With this massage technique, they have to undergo excruciating pain from

the deep, long strokes delivered by the masseur before they experience the rejuvenating feeling of health and wellness.

This is the kind of service that Sy’s spa offers.

And more. Which is why customers of his massage parlor say “Saruy” after every session. This term is a combination of the words “sarap” or “it feels good” and “aruy” a Filipino expression when one feels pain.

He advocates “Hilot” to become a mainstream massage technique among Filipino clients and for it to have a more standardized definition.

Another advocacy that he has is to give back to the deaf-mute community by hiring these persons with disability (PWDs) in his spa here.

He also has Hilot Spas in Makati, Libis, Quezon City, and Puerto Princessa City, Palawan, but only he

hires deafmutes in Davao City.

“Hilot” is actually a traditional healing method practiced by our ancestors since 2000 years ago. Gerry Sy and his organization have travelled all over the Philippines to acquire skills and techniques from different “manghihilot” of every region.

“Manghihilot” the traditional term for masseurs using this technique, looks for the “panuhot” in a patient.

“Panuhot” is a Filipino term for irregularities in the human circulatory system.

Gerry Sy and his organization partnered with the Depart-

ment of Health to have a more standardized definition for this term, since there are some non-believers of “panuhot” and “hilot.”

He said that “panuhot” is actually lactic acid that develops in the circulatory system of the body due to lack of activities and exercise.

The body is made up of 70 percent water, and it will undergo a state of shock when it enters a cold atmosphere from a warm one, which in turn develops lactic acid in the body system, or in the colloquial term, “panuhot.”

“Hilot” in the old days was passed down from a patriarch to his eldest son from generation to generation, but today it can be learned, Gerry Sy said.

The “manghihilot” in his spa will first scan the customers back three

times.

The first scan is to dteremine the temperature of the body.

The second scan determines which part s are too warm or too cold. Too warm means the area lacks blood circulation while too cold means the energy in that area is blocked.

The third scan is to check for “panuhot,” and if there are irregularities in the bone formation of the body.

Therapy would then be formulated, especially for the condition of the patient as determined by the scan.

After the session, clients are diagnosed to determine what is the ailment or sickness the patient is facing, and how these problems can be cured.

“More than relaxing, it is healing, and that is the Filipino hilot,” Sy said.

VERYONE in Davao’s media community became curious after Davao City police chief Ronald Dela Rosa came out with a revelation that a member of the media is into the illegal drugs trade.

All of a sudden, members of local media jumped into the guessing game, employing various modes of discovery from connect-the-dots to elimination process. Credit it to Dela Rosa’s shocking leak which exploded in front of our faces.

Dela Rosa did not name the mediaman, but he did give some clues to the identity of the suspect.

The three hints: 1. He is a male reporter. 2. He is from the print media. 3. He is allegedly a shabu pusher.

The unnamed suspect’s identity became everyone’s obsession like the game craze “Four Pics One Word.” Only, this is three pics one name.

For the curious media, this could be one exciting trivia, feasting on the subject matter not unlike that of a showbiz blind item.

But while the media badgered Dela Rosa to reveal the guy’s identity, the city police director remained firm in his stand not to spoil the mounting suspense he himself had triggered, thus prolonging the agony, as it were, by remaining coy about it all as of presstime Saturday night. He would only say that the important thing is that he has talk-

ed to the reporter and advised him to cease and desist – or else! Dela Rosa has put an end to the issue, opting to keep what he knows about the suspect’s illegal activities in the secret chambers of his “tok-hang” (toktok-hangyo) operations.

This leads us to speculate on whether this shocking revelation is the result of a legitimate intelligence report or a mere spin designed to weave intrigue in the ranks of the media profession in Davao City. We will not tolerate bad eggs in the media, especially if it involves heinous crimes like the illegal drugs trade.

However, it is also an affront to the media if a serious accusation such as this one is hurled against a member of the profession and dismissed just like that as if the tarnished reputation could be washed off by a simple trip to the shower.

Dela Rosa has not put closure to the matter and leaves it hanging in the air. Meanwhile, the real ethical question is whether or not the police should reveal their factual intelligence report on suspected drug syndicates, regardless of who they are and not merely shake this particular industry with rumbling revelations that lead to nowhere despite the significant publicity mileage it carries.

Please pass the Freedom of Information bill please. And hurry.

Cost-saving and pollution-free

ROVEN ANTI-SMOG MEASURE – With traffic bad and getting worse, government is eyeing more pedestrian lanes, additional roads, and immediate ways to clear the air and most importantly look into the health concerns of the public. Engineers, urban planners and structural experts are increasingly convinced there is a way out of the urban centers’ vehicular smog. There are, of course, studies and various research, and the results are proven to be disgusting: about 70% of pollution in the big cities and other bustling metropolis is caused by vehicular emission.

What is really the main cause of air pollution in the urban centers? The problem is the vehicle fuel itself. Currently Davao City also has its own share of the country’s problem on pollution.

Thousands got sick every year from inhaling noxious vehicle emissions and fumes from factories. Countless are reportedly suffering from pollution-related allergies and lung ailments in the city even if the pollution problem is not as serious compared to Metro Manila. Engineers and machine experts set emission standards similar to those in other Philippine cities and different countries as well in pursuing an ambitious strategy to reduce noxious emissions from vehicles especially from 4-stroke motorcycles that emit 10 times of hydrocarbon produced by cars.

They are promoting LPG-powered (liquefied petroleum gas) vehicles.

Many taxi units particularly in Davao City are overhauled to run on LPG. The readily available fuel burns more cleanly than does the gasoline and diesel fuel that currently powers taxis, or

even buses and could reduce smoky airborne particulates. LPG conversion is a common and proven anti-smog measure.

More than 400 LPG-powered taxi units are now being used in the city or perhaps several thousands more throughout the country and close to five million in 30 countries, according to latest studies. LPG-powered taxis have been on the road in many countries notably Japan for almost 40 years.

Still, Davao City is continuously conducting trial and test on taxi units – in part to convince private cab companies that using LPG actually won’t hurt profits. The bill to convert a unit from gas to LPG could only run a minimal cost.

Likewise dozens of refueling stations throughout the city would also have to be well-equipped to dispense LPG fuel. Fleets of LPG-powered and other types of eco-friendly vehicles like the electric-driven cars may someday banish the choking haze that shrouds bustling cities. To an environmentalist, the switch sounds probably like an answered prayer. LPG-powered vehicles mean almost zero emission. We always have to bear in mind that attitudes are fast changing. In coming years millions of people all over the world are expected to join the motoring public: logically prices of gasoline and diesel fuel and other refined petroleum products should rise along with the demand.

As fast-developing urban centers like Davao City disappear under a gray blanket of choking smog and greenhouse gases that deplete the ozone layer, government will be pressured to respond with stricter clean-air regulations. Taxi units and other means of transportation are angling to be perceived as part of the solution, not part of the problem. Moreover, engineers and experts are desperately seeking ways to get a technical jump and will cite the conversion process as slowly advancing. Analysts think LPG-powered cars may ultimately turn out to be an interim process – a bridge to cost-saving and pollution-free solutions in the future. Nevertheless, skeptics may provoke the conversion process pointing out those government think-tanks and concerned agencies are moving at snail-pace just like the traffic.

However, officials of many developing nations like the Philippines presumed that they are faced with a choice between cleaning up the air and pursuing economic development. In fact, it should be possible to do both. First, government should set strict emission control standards with corresponding stiffer penalties similar to those in well-developed countries. Secondly, promote LPG-powered or electric-driven vehicles. We should not wait the air in our surroundings to get worse that someday residents will be encouraged to stay indoors. Given that kind of responsibility, top government officials down to the local government units (LGU) should all take a deep breath – and work seriously on improving the air and protecting the environment.

The price of ignoring climate change

E are now taking important steps to help poorer nations cope with climate change. Indeed, federal agencies, from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Environmental Protection Agency, to the Agriculture and Defense Departments, support adaptation strategies in the developing world. We provide financing to support construction and hardening of physical infrastructure. We make available technology to improve weather forecasting and irrigation techniques. While these physical adaptation programs are crucial, the crisis of climate change also requires political and diplomatic adaptation.

This is the mission of the State Department’s Environment, Science and Technology and Health (ESTH) officers. These officers engage on both a bilateral and a regional basis to promote good environmental governance, enable sustainable trade practices, advance resource and wild-

This is the underlining philosophy of the new PhilHealth Law (Republic Act 10606), says its principal sponsor in the Senate, Sen. Pia Cayetano, Chairman of the Committee on Health and Demography.

“With this new law, we seek to identify and enroll the poorest segments of the population, numbering to about 25 million Filipinos, under the National Health Insurance Pro-

gram.”

“In the past, there was a gap in the law because the poorest of the poor were not covered by PhilHealth unless their local government units or their Congressmen sponsored the payment of their premiums. Only those who could afford to pay the premiums were able to benefit from Philhealth and these would primarily be the formally employed,” Cayetano said.

“Unfortunately, not all LGUs had the capability to sponsor the PhilHealth en-

rolment of their poor constituents, while other LGUs do not see this as a priority at all. And so we were left with a situation where the poor were, by-and-large, left out of the national health insurance system when they should be its primary beneficiaries.”

“This measure addresses a shortcoming in the implementation of the original PhilHealth law (RA 7875) by ensuring that the poorest of the poor, including the indigents, unemployed, self-employed, and

awardees got more than a hundred percent rating for having a smoke-free environment.

Eleven local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao won Red Orchid awards, along with 15 government offices and 11 government hospitals.

Among the LGUs, Ezperanza (Sultan Kudarat) got a rating of 101 percent, Dipolog City 100, Tupi, South Cotabato 99, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Norte, Panabo City, and Makilala, Cotabato, all got 94, Kidapawan City 91, Oroqueta City 85, Bislig City 72, and Marawi City 54.

Among government offices, the 68th Infantry (Kaagapay) Battalion, 210 got a rating of 105 percent, Department of Budget and Management, Region 10 got 103, Misamis Occidental Provincial Health Center and Civil Service Commission Region 12 both got 102, Land Transportation Office, Region 10, Department of Education, Misamis Occidental, and Compostela Provincial Capitol all got

“This is a good start to avoid diseases caused by the double- dead meats to the consumers,” she said.

Double-dead meat comes from pigs that died from disease which are illegally cut up for sale where its meat has a dark hide and the hairs of the skin remains stuck to the fat even if it is dipped in boiling water.

Double-dead meat is usually pale in color with a greenish-gray tint, sticky, foul-smelling and cold which is a sign that the meat has been frozen. It also commands a lower price when compared to fresh meat.

Consumption of double-dead meat is a health hazard and may result in diarrhea and food poisoning.

ITHOUT much fanfare but replete with subdued and dire warning to perpetrators of cross-border crimes, a landmark bilateral agreement on exchange of trade data was forged recently between the Philippines and the United States.

Signatories to the Trade Transparency Agreement held (June 20) at the US Embassy in Manila were Bureau of Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, Deputy Director of the Office of Internal Affairs for ICE Homeland Security Investigations David A. Thompson and Deputy Assistant Director Joseph A. Gallion.

This accord in the continuing partnership of the two countries marks a milestone in combating the multi-faceted global menace of trade fraud, money laundering, contraband smuggling, tax evasion, international terrorist financing, and other transnational crime.

Under the agreement, which is part of the Mutual Assistance on Customs Administration pact between the US and the Philippines that was signed on July 27, 2000, the US will help the Philippine government develop a Trade Transparency Unit (TTU) at the BOC. The TTU, which shall be manned by BOC per-

sonnel trained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), shall monitor 24/7 the movement of cargoes and transactions at the BOC to detect suspicious trade and financial transactions susceptible to exploitation by criminal and terrorist organizations.

Biazon said, “The cooperation between the Philippines and the US through the establishment of the TTU will mutually benefit our two countries in terms of helping enhance our fight against illicit trade, smuggling and money laundering, among others.”

“Moreover, with the new data sharing agreement between the US and the Philippines, coupled with the new technologies that would be infused in the TTU, ordinary Filipinos could just as well benefit from this agreement through the tighter control of our borders against the entry of anti-social goods and contrabands.”Biazon added.

As a backgrounder, the first TTU was created by the ICE in 2004 and, since 2005, it has partnered with other countries such as Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and now the Philippines, in its global war against the “the rise in complex and sophisticated financial and trade crimes around the world.” (PNA)

LOGGED drainage and overflow of a huge river in Maguindanao led to flooding Saturday in this city’s seven low-lying villages after a heavy downpour overnight.

The Catholic-run Notre Dame University (NDU), situated in the borders of Barangay Rosary Heights 2, Rosary Heights 5 and Poblacion 4 was submerged with knee-level water due to a heavy downpour overnight and the overflow of Rio Grande de Mindanao from the Maguindanao marshland.

Last week, flooding affected eight Maguindanao towns and eight North Cotabato municipalities.

Fr. Eduardo Tanudtanud, NDU president, was forced to declare suspension of classes Saturday as flood water covered the roads leading to the university and its compound.

Officials blamed the floods in Barangay Rosary Heights 3 to clogged drainage system and the overflow of Kakar River, a tributary east of the city

which served as diversion of floodwater from Maguindanao.

Also flooded were the villages of Rosary Heights 6, 7, 8, Poblacion 3, Poblacion 4, Tamontaka 1, 2 and 3, all situated east of Cotabato City facing the Maguindanao marshland.

The situation was worsened by the high tide with seawater meeting with the freshwater from Maguindanao marshland.

Cotabato City, considered six feet below sea level, serves as the catch basin of flood water from Rio Grande de Mindanao where water from Bukidnon, North Cotabato, South Cotabato and Davao del Sur flows en route to the Moro gulf.

Aside from clogged canals due to garbage, tributaries criss-crossing the city were also clogged with huge cranks of water hyacinths.

Public works personnel from the city engineering office are now declogging the canals and social welfare officials attending to the needs of affected families. (PNA)

Power lunch with Celina Le Neindre Is she Asia’s next apprentice?

By Kenneth Irving Ong AXN’s Apprentice Asia is making waves all over Asia and one Dabawenyo face with the Dabawenyo gung-ho attitude stands out in the crowd, and that face is that of 29 year old model and business professional Celina Le Niendre.

I was fortunate enough to have a power lunch at her family’s French restaurant, Claude’s Cafe de Ville for some catching up and to talk about her experience on The Apprentice Asia.

Celina revealed that it started out as a way for her to put her competitive drive for business as a professional and her modelling and hosting skills together. “I started watching the episodes of The Apprentice online and I liked it and so I said to myself ‘let’s apply!’” beams Celina, although her portfolio is already impressive in her own right.

Trying out in the world’s toughest job interview is no small feat in itself. “You had to download a tenpage essay type interview with lots of very personal questions.” said Celina, “have you lied, have you cheated for business, have you gotten anyone fired on purpose to elevate your

position in life. Of course you have to submit your resume and submit ten referrals with numbers so they can call each of these persons” From 30,000 applicants, the field was whittled down to the final 100, then a final 30 and eventually the twelve applicants actually made the show.

On Tony Fernandes “He is imposing, but not like Trump.” says Celina of Tony Fernandes “Imposing because you know he is a very successful man and he is so sharp. He is very sharp.”

Her first impressions on Mr. Fernandes were that he was intimidating.

“Intimidating because you know a lot of the usual tricks will not work to seduce this man.” reflects Celina, “No flirting. You know that complimenting him will not work. You know that it will be really based on how you are

performing. He was really himself” There are also funny moments off camera as Celina talked about how Mr. Fernandes would say how his F1 or football team lost and joked that he was in a bad mood and will fire everybody who gets on his bad side.

On the challenges “Everything was given on the day itself.” says Celina on the weekly challenges. “We did not know what to expect. Like in the first challenge, we were only given three hours to sell the fish. And this was already in the middle of the day.”

Celina explains that everyone had to work hard for the challenges although you can see different characters develop as the season progresses.

“There is a lot of drama and the different cliques that formed during the show.” says Celina, “but in the end, beyond the game, I would love in real life, to have friends such as these (contestants). They are winners in my eyes. They

are all amazing personalities with amazing backgrounds and resumes.”

Celina reveals that she still keeps in touch with all of the other contestants of the show, “We have our own chatroom and every time an episode comes out we are like laughing and chatting.” laughs Celina.

“We are all in touch.”

When prodded on her chances of winning The Apprentice Asia, Celina just gave a confident laugh and a quick quip, “You will just have to watch and see.”

DM9, Smart project garners top honors in prestigious Cannes Lions

A campaign that used mobile technology to literally lighten the load of public school students won for the Philippines its first ever Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the highest honor given by what is considered in the industry as the Oscars of advertising.

The initiative called Smart Txtbks, spearheaded by creative agency DM9JaymeSyfu and wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc., beat a hundred other entries in the mobile category of the 60th Cannes Lions, which included submissions from Adidas, Google, McDonald’s, and Nike.

Smart Txtbks involved the conversion of textbooks and workbooks into SIM content that could be read by public school chil-

dren using affordable analog phones. The SIM cards replaced the voluminous school books the children had had to carry every day, which caused back problems and physical deformities in some of them.

DM9 proposed the idea of condensing book content to Smart in late 2012.

They collaborated with book publishers to load materials into SIM cards provided by Smart. These were then distributed to several public schools all over the Philippines.

The results: In the participating public schools, students’ bags became lighter by 50 percent, school attendance rate was at a high 95 percent, and average test performance hit 90 percent.

In an interview with online publication AdAge, Cannes Lions jury member Xavier Laoureux said what was “interesting about [Smart Txtbks] is that it’s the best way to

show you can have a mobile idea without pushing the technology side of it. It was not using technology as the end.”

Smart Public Affairs Head Ramon Isberto said Smart Txtbks shows how mobile technology, even “low-tech” analog phones, can help improve people’s lives.

“Smart Txtbks is relevant in a country where majority of the people still use feature phones, and where many families cannot afford e-book readers and tablets. We are happy that our partnership with DM9 has brought pride to the country, and has helped make learning easier for thousands of Filipino children,” he said.

Merlee Jayme, partner and chief creative officer at DM9JaymeSyfu, said: “Our happiness comes from the fact the country’s biggest telco got the biggest global award. Plus, you can’t help but feel

“Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month,” the network says in a statement.

Last month in a video deposition that was part of $1.2 million lawsuit filed against her by a former employee, Deen admitted to using the N-word and to telling what could be perceived as racist jokes.

“It’s just what they are— they’re jokes...most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks...Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don’t know—I just don’t know what to say,” Deen reportedly said to defend herself.

“I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person.”

Deen also skipped out on a scheduled appearance on Today, an act that she also issued an apology video for, claiming she was “physically unable” to make it to the interview.

“I was invited this morning to speak with Matt Lauer about a subject that has been very hurtful for a lot of people,” she says in the video. “And Matt, I have

to say, I was physically unable this morning. The pain has been tremendous that I have caused to myself and to others, so I’ve taken this opportunity now that I’ve pulled myself together and aim able to speak to offer an apology to those I have hurt.”

Paula Deen has been with the Food Network since 1999. No word yet on whether her son Jamie and Bobby’s relationship with the channel will be affected by the controversy.

Bret Michaels survives another bus crash BRET Michaels is one lucky guy.

After a string of health scares and another bus accident back in 2009, the singer has escaped serious injury again, after his tour bus hit several deer on the way to his show in Biloxi, Miss., Friday morning.

“Except for some bumps and bruises I am thankful there were no serious injuries,” Michaels told Celebuzz.

“It is unfortunate for the deer, but thankfully due to modern RV technology and a steel firewall we are all OK. I have every intention to make tonight’s show in Biloxi and the tour will continue.”

The former Poison frontman only sustained minor cuts and bruises, according to the site.

This is just the latest in a series of scares for Michaels.

SM Davao celebrates Phl Independence

SM City Davao Mall Administration at the Giant Flag for a cause. The campaign gathered hundreds of assorted school supplies which will be given out to less fortunate kids.

This year, SM City Davao marked the 115th Philippine Independence with the parade of 115 Philippine flags, flag hoisting and the turnover of the Giant Flag for a Cause to the City Social Service and Development Office last June 12.

The Flag hoisting ceremony at the Annex Event Center was graced by delegations from the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Education, Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Commission for Indigenous Peoples, Department of Foreign Affairs, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School Boy Scouts, the City Social Service and Development Office, and the mall tenants and administration staff.

The Davao Girls’ Choir led the singing of the national anthem. The group also performed various OPM numbers at the main mall atrium to entertain the shoppers along with the Royeca School of Ballet.

Earlier in the month of June, SM City Davao with the Philippine Veterans Bank and the Veterans Federation of the Philip-

pines opened the War of our Fathers exhibition.

The award-winning travelling showcase features World War II photographs and memorabilia.

A collection of traditional and contemporary Philippine ternos were also showcased in the Filipiniana Exhibition. It featured works of Davao’s fashion czar Alfonso Boy Guinoo, celebrated Davao designers Emi Englis and Junnie Artajo, and masterpieces of promising Davao artists.

On June 9, shoppers were treated on a solid Filipino musical explosion with one of the country’s most influential rock bands Rivermaya.

It was truly a meaningful Independence Day celebration at SM City Davao.

IAMI – They plopped themselves on the edge of the stage, under a hail of NBA championship confetti. Dwyane Wade cradled the Larry O’Brien Trophy. LeBron James held the Finals MVP award.

This was the plan three summers ago, a unification of two mega-stars (well, three, but we’ll spare discussion of that for the time being) and a run of championships they might start piecing together here in South Florida. The clumsy announcement of “The Decision,” the obnoxious pep rally prediction of “not four, not five, not …” titles, the entire sense of entitlement had made this team so easy to root against and, in the end, produced the very fire of criticism that drove it to these heights.

For LeBron, it was 37 points and 12 rebounds.

For D-Wade, 23 and 10.

Miami 95, San Antonio 88, four games to three, second straight title for the Heat.

And so there they sat in a shared state of euphoria trying to look around and soak it in, wearing goofy hats and broad smiles borne of challenges met as much as championships won.

It’s funny how the journey turned out to be more important than the destination.

“Oh man, man, man,” Wade said. “This is sweet. This is the sweetest one by far because of

everything we’ve been through.”

“The vision that I had when I decided to come here is all coming true,” LeBron echoed.

There’s probably never been a team this great, a duo this dominating, that’s been so ripped apart. Each loss delivers doubt. Each failure produces giddiness from critics. Legacy is constantly being defined and redefined, debated and re-debated – especially on LeBron, despite the fact that he’s just 28 years old.

Heavy is the head that calls himself the King, and, so, yes, that’s all part of it. The Heat bring it on themselves at times. But if it’s fair to demand so much from those given so much, then let them have their moment when Wade rises up through sore knees in such a critical stage. When James simply takes the game over in the moments that demand greatness.

Both produced nights built not simply from natural ability but from hours and hours of work and toughness, both physical and mental. Wade never made his knees an excuse, never sat, never stopped.

He just kept pushing and pushing, even pleading with them, he said, to give him one more night.

“I told them, I said, ‘Listen, both of you guys, y’all give one more great game,’” Wade laughed at his conversation with his knees.

And there was LeB-

ron, draining jump shots – making five of his 10 3-pointers – because the Spurs worked so hard to keep him off the blocks and out of the paint. This was long the weakest part of his game, a skill acquired rather than a strength he was born with. This was forever his effort in the gym, offseasons and off days.

When you’re making shots like that, LeBron was asked, you’re totally unstoppable.

“Yeah, I am,” he said with a laugh. “You said it … I just trusted all the work that I put into my game. And to be able to come through for your teammates in the biggest moment on the biggest stage makes me more satisfied than anything in the world.”

This was a moment for these two.

And not the mom e n t maybe they ex-

pected. Oh, winning consecutive titles was always the plan, always the inevitable they figured.

Only the entire thing has been t o u g h e r,

harder, meaner than they could have foreseen.

Nationally, fans didn’t embrace this marriage the way they thought. Locally, a super team excited the city, but this was still a fan base that saw thousands bail out of Game 6

with 30 seconds remaining, no faith in their heroes.

And especially across this last month, back-toback seven-game slugfests, the road to the title was tighter than ever.

They needed every ounce

of muscle to fight through Indiana. They needed a miracle comeback to stave off elimination Tuesday. They needed their own greatness and an unexpected 18 points from Shane Battier to prevail Thursday.

coach on winning the NBA championship the second year in a row.

Obama called Coach Erik Spoelstra on Friday afternoon. The White House says Obama pointed out the team’s relentless determination and noted it was a

historic season for the team and for its MVP, LeBron James.

The White House says Obama told the coach that he’ll have the team to the White House to congratulate them in person on their victory.

Miami won its third NBA championship Thursday night, topping the San Antonio Spurs 95-88 in Game 7 of the finals.
