aVaO City second district congresswoman Mylene albano-garcia has filed a resolution in congress for legislative inquiry in connection with the Cebu Pacific air flight 5J 971 mishap sunday night, which shut down the Davao City International airport (DIa) for two days.

The congresswoman told this reporter that she filed the resolution “in aid of legislation” to know what really happened from the technical aspect to airline and airport manage-

ment issues.

To avoid this incident from happening again, also included in the investigation are, “emergency disaster preparedness of the airline and the airport, as well as the inadequacy of the Civil aviation authority of the Philippines’ (CaaP’s) response to the incident.” according to a Cebu Pacific advisory, runway no.

Beijing’s police urge women to cover up on public transport P

OLICe in the Chinese capital have warned women not to wear miniskirts, hot pants or other skimpy clothing on buses and subways during the hot summer in order to avoid sexual harassment, Chinese media reported on Wednesday.

Women should also shield themselves with bags or newspapers, and sit or stand in lower areas rather than in raised seats to avoid being surreptitiously photographed, according to guidelines issued by the traffic department of the Beijing Public security Bureau and cited by the official China Daily.

Women often complain of groping and other harassment in Beijing’s crowded buses and sub-

ways.

Most buses in the capital do not have security cameras so it is difficult for authorities to collect evidence of harassment, police officer Xing Wei was quoted as saying.

The heaviest penalty for sexual harassment is 15 days in detention, according to Xing.

Women have been guaranteed broad equal treatment under Chinese law since Mao Zedong, the founder of communist China, declared that women “hold up half the sky”.

This conference intends to promote the Philippines as a viable investment destination for local and foreign businesses in the sectors of agri-business, information and com-

munications technology (ICT), support to tourism, health and wellness, and manufacturing, particularly fresh and processed tropical fruits, processed food, rubber, coconut, aqua-marine, and poultry.

“Investing in Priority Industry Clusters for sMes: a Conference” will be held from June 25 to 26 at at the sMX Convention Center, sM Lanang Premiere in Davao City.

The conference will

also putting up exhibit which will showcase 19 priority industry clusters and investment projects, business matching which will have a one-on-one business session between suppliers and potential investors, and break-out sessions in which industry experts will talk about opportunities among the industry clusters.

Part of the conference are experts from the Deutsche gesellschaft für Interna-

tionale Zusammenarbeit (german agency for International Cooperation) to introduce ValueLinks or value chain methodology as a tool in industry development.

ValueLinks development plan was drafted during series of industry cluster development planning workshops held in Central Visayas, northern Luzon, southern Luzon, and southern Mindanao last year.

“Our global environment remains increasingly vulnerable, as the issues of nuclear terrorism and nuclear safety cannot be confined within national borders. Hence, avenues for strengthening regional and international knowledge-sharing, networking, capacity-building, and cooperation are vital to confront these pressing challenges,” he said at the opening of the 5th arF Inter-sessional Meeting on non-Proliferation and Disarmament in Makati City.

He said the peaceful use of nuclear technology is a “legitimate right” of all parties to the nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty, but also has corresponding responsibilities.

Co-chairing the meeting, which focused on peaceful uses of nuclear technology, were the Philippines, australia and Japan.

The peaceful use of nuclear technology is one of three pillars in the work of the arF on nuclear matters. The other two are non-proliferation and disarmament.

arF is a venue for multilateral dialogue on regional security issues in the asia-Pacific region. It marks its 20th anniversary this year. also attending the event were representatives from 23 countries and from international organizations, including: International atomic energy agency (Iaea) Comprehensive nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Preparatory Commission global Initiative to Combat nuclear Terrorism (gICnT) Council for security Cooperation in the asia-Pacific (CsCaP) The DFa said the participants exchanged views on the applications of nuclear technology in various fields, including environmental protection, food and agriculture, and health.

It said they also discussed Iaea standards on nuclear safety and security, preventing nuclear terrorism, and steps to improve nuclear safety worldwide.

The forum coincides with the recent commemoration of the completion of the Bataan nuclear Power Plant (BnPP) almost 30 years ago. a group of journalists and bloggers headed to Morong, Bataan, to visit the BnPP on the anniversary of its completion on May 28, 1984.

The visit was organized in an effort to jumpstart renewed interest in nuclear energy as a viable source of power for the country.

Sta. Cruz, DENR ink public land titling partnership agreement

He Municipality of sta. Cruz, Davao sur and the Department of environment of environment and natural resources (Denr 11) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Partnership agreement (MOPa) to expedite public land titling activities specifically in sta. Cruz.

This is the first MOPa entered into by the Denr in terms of public land titling in region 11. sta. Cruz Mayor atty.

Joel ray Lopez said that the signing of MOPa is the first step towards the commitment of the municipality to improve its land administration and management. He further said that sta.

Cruz recognizes the importance of establishing partnership with the Denr to increase its land administration capacity. according to Denr

11 regional executive Director Joselin Marcus e. Fragada, this agreement is also in consonance with Department administrative Order (DaO) no. 2011-06 which prescribes the guidelines for the implementation of public land titling in partnership with the local government units.

Fragada further said this partnership will serve as a check and balance mechanism on how the Denr, particularly the Lands Management service (LMs), fares in terms of land titling. “generally, this is beneficial to the Denr and the LgU as will as to the constituents of sta.

ess than three years after it started commercial operations, CJ Toyota Tsusho Philippines, Inc. has formally an-

nounced it will cease operations “due to sever capital impairment”.

The multi-million dollar-capitalized firm is one

of the biggest complex established in the economic zone in sta. Cruz, Davao del sur. It is engaged in the manufacturing and export-

ing of natural sweetener extracted from coconut shell.

In a statement, CJTPI president and managing director son Dae Ho said the firm tried to avert the crisis by way of reducing cost of operations and increase market share but the effort failed to address the problem. CJTPI Board of Directors, in a statement, said that it will close its business operations effective June 30, 2013.

The cessation of operations of what is bruited about as the biggest manufacturing complex that produces natural sweetener from coconut shell was confirmed by anflocor Chairman antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo, Jr. through a text message from new York City. anflocor is the domestic partner of CJTPI. The

natural sweetener from coconut shell is known as xylose. It is considered as the best alternative for diabetics because of its low glycemic index of 35 compared to other natural sweetener which has an index of 80. alcohol derived from xylose is known in the market as xylitol. It is used worldwide in the making of toothpaste, chewing gums and mouthwash as this deters bacteria from invading the teeth and therefore prevents cavities.

CJTPI invested about $55 million (roughly P2-billion) for the manufacturing complex which was projected to produce about 15,000 tons of xylose annually. The company is expected to formally inform the securities and exchange Commission about its dissolution after complying with the publication requirement prior to closure. The regional office of the seC through Vivian Florete said it has yet to receive formal notice from the company.

Inflation remains stable in May 2013 H

eaDLIne inflation remained stable at 2.6 percent as most commodity groups recorded slower growth of prices in May 2013, according to the national economic and Development authority (neDa).

“The stable general inflation rate in May 2013 relative to the previous month was a result of the slower price increases of major commodity groups counterbalancing the higher growth in prices of selected food items and lower cutbacks in domestic petroleum prices,” said socioeconomic Planning secretary arsenio M. Balisacan.

The headline inflation is of the same rate as in april 2013 but lower compared to the 2.9 percent rate in May 2012.

“This still leads us to an average inflation rate of 3.0 percent for the first five months of 2013, exactly at the low-end of the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC)’s inflation target of 3.0 to 5.0 percent for 2013,” the Cabinet official said.

Through the anti-red Tape act survey of DILg via the national Barangay Operations Office (nBOO)and globe which was implemented by the Philippine Center for Civic education and De-

mocracy (PCCeD) six month ago, it showed that technology plays a key role in linking barangay leaders with their constituents.

The pilot study utilized Delph. io, a survey tool developed by globe Telecom’s wholly-owned subsidiary Kickstart Ventures,

Inc.. Questionnaires were sent out to 1,000 recipients of globe sIM cards nationwide who were identified by DILg. The survey questions centered on the responsiveness of local government units and the general public awareness on the existence of services delivered by their local governments.

“We were able to reach almost 400 respondents for the DILg-arTa survey within a few hours. By using technology, we were able to shorten the survey process and make information-gathering more efficient,” shared reynald Trillana, executive Director, PCCeD. The project results provide DILg with valuable information on the actual performance of barangays to ensure that they are delivering services with efficiency and effectiveness.

“By sharing innovative information communications technology (ICT) solutions such Delph.io and the globe BridgeCom sIM card which provides a less expensive means of communication with DILg, globe is able to help ordinary citizens have their voices heard and aid in improving transparency and accountability towards good governance,” said Yoly C. WWF launches ‘Seize Your Power!’

ITH a global call to action urging governments and financial institutions to increase investments in renewable energy (re) to at least Us$40 billion (approximately PHP 1.68 trillion) over the next year, the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) today launched its new international campaign under the slogan seize Your Power!

“We are running out of time. If we continue to rely on fossil fuels, we will face a future of worsening air pollution and an increasingly inhospitable climate.

It is our collective responsibility to commit to the future we want. We’re calling on political and financial decision-makers to seize their power and make the switch to sustainable, clean and renewable energy sources to finally end the inertia brought about by decades of reliance on coal, oil and gas,” declares WWF International Director general Jim Leape.

The campaign was launched on World environment Day and generated a plethora of online activity. The main call-toaction centred on signing a pledge to enable supporters to call for increased

re investments and phase out coal, oil and gas investments.

The pledge, which can be found at www.panda. org/seizeyourpower, calls on both financial institutions and governments to act immediately by making stronger commitments to increase financing for re technologies and policies.

Wake up call

or what it’s worth, the airport mishap that sent the Davao City reeling into losses estimated at P250 million in two days that the airport operations were jeopardized—was a wake-up call to all of us Dabawenyos.

Davao City International airport, despite its worldclass tag, is far from being world-class in emergency response.

The Cebu Pacific Flight 5J971 exposed the deficiencies of the airport—lack of firetrucks, ambulances, medical team and equipment, X-ray machines, closed circuit television cameras, and infra-red cameras.

Other than the material deficiencies, the incident also exposed the abject lack of training in emergency response of both airport personnel and airline crew.

We asked if the airport management has a copy of the CCTV recording of the incident, airport manager Fredrick san Felix could not show one. It relies on footages of media networks as reference videos but from its end, it has none. There were also no CCTV cams positioned at the runway.

an ordinary feature of today’s must-have mobile phone, it is almost a crime not to have a camera at anytime of the day to record important events and memorable moments. an international airport without a runway CCTV camera is like an iPhone without a camera.

What on earth is the business of an international facility sitting like a lame duck while an aircraft is in distress?

This is Davao City and for a city hyped as one of the top next cities in the world, what a black eye this airport boo-boo must be. It’s like a right hook delivered by a Floyd Mayweather. no wonder, Mayor sara Duterte is fuming mad.

While the city government is moving heaven and earth to put Davao City into its lofty status in the tourism and investment market, here come some people sitting on their world-class chairs while the rest of the facility is like a bridge waiting to collapse.

Like Mayor sara said, heads should roll at the DIa. Yes, it’s time for some heads to roll, and they better roll out of the airport and not get stuck in the runway mud to stay there until another mishap comes along.

LaBOr InTensIVe anD MarKeT-DrIVen FIrMs neeD MOre eFFeCTIVe COnTrOL – In recent years, several fashionable foreign direct-marketing giants have entered the Philippine market in a big way, eventually producing a modern market-driven system. These companies, which sell cosmetics, beauty and hair care products, food supplements, soap and detergents, footwear, underwear, brassieres, clothing lines and accessories, employ several thousands of sales staff throughout the country.

The market-driven companies even hired beauty consultants and sales strategists by the hundreds to explain how to use their products – and sell them. They clearly have high hopes for the Philippine market and like other business entities it had substantially invested and tied up with local beauty and skin care specialists and manufacturers to make their products locally. as a matter of fact, the vast majority of the thousands of direct marketers in the country including Davao City are employed by some hundreds of new home-grown direct-marketing companies. With so many scrambling for a cut of the burgeoning business, scams are not only unavoidable but virtually definite. such shenanigans should be the pri-

mary concern of government because direct marketing it seems was growing faster than its ability to control or regulate abuses such as fraud, racket or “pyramid” sales schemes, in which some tricky home-grown direct-sales firms spend more time recruiting sales people than selling products. remember, a pyramid scheme, although sort of a financial cunning rather than sales brought to the collapse of some previously popular homegrown direct marketing establishments.

Under such circumstances, the natural “buyer beware” instincts of consumers have been dampened by decades of life under a striving economy. Therefore most of the consumers’ concerns can be addressed through more stringent government regulations. Pyramid scheme, scams, and fly-by-night direct-marketing operations are distinctive to unscrupulous local entrepreneurs. government regulators can refer to the experience of other governments, including the Us and some well-developed nations that have learned to make distribution channels more transparent to spot and prosecute scams, and to distinguish legitimate, professionally conducted direct sales from pyramid schemes.

The government could also strengthen consumer-protection agencies by

directing some lackadaisical officials to just not merely present broad smiles and wide grins during media interviews.

There is nothing really inherently alien about the concept of direct-market selling. Filipinos have been carrying their goods from house-to-house since the first peddler learned to put wheels on his cart. Indeed, direct selling is part of asia’s economic fabric, from our very own so-called “Tupperware ladies” of old, to the door-to-door hawkers in China and stockbrokers in Japan.

Ultimately, direct marketing is a necessary part of the country’s own economic transformation. Direct selling is labor intensive – and workers are plentiful in the Philippines. In other countries, for example, thousands of direct-sales ladies dealing in cosmetics, beauty and skin care products make up many company’s domestic workforce. Moreover, a major worry of government in the coming years is to find enough jobs for the new unemployed graduates, not least to forestall social unrest. any government does not want to prohibit business activities that can provide jobs. But product distribution in the country has always been a problem because of some scheming and greedy entrepreneurs. nevertheless, it can be solved in part by the activities of thousands of hustling but thoughtful businessmen moving products all over the country. The crucial answer to the abuses and excesses they commit is more factual and effective supervision, not sweeping prohibition.

Children from the neighborhood would come to the trees to pick up many pieces of the fruit scattered under the thick foliage. They also try to bring down some of the pinky-red tambis fruit with long bamboo sticks. I like to watch them every time these kids come to the trees to pick fruits by climbing them or shooting them down with a sling shot.

It reminded me of my own childhood, sixty-six summers ago at Jovellar street in Zamboanga City when I would climb our own macopa tree in front of our nipa thatched house beside the rice field that stretched all the way to Tetuan village near Pasonanca hills. I was just six years old and like any neighborhood kid, would spend the whole day, either climbing trees or running along the foot path of the rice field, chasing away the

mayas to keep them from plucking and eating the palay grains still waiting to be harvested.

It’s the same kind of joy I felt when I spent weekends with my son sean anthony in april this summer swimming in the shallow, crystal sea waters of Camp Holiday beach resort at samal Island. I always look forward to crossing the narrow channel of the Davao gulf on that white-colored rOrO vessel to spend another summer day at this beach resort.

I missed my childhood days in Zamboanga when I would play and swim with my neighborhood friends at the beach beside Fort Pilar in the 1950’s--that explains my eagerness to spend the day at the beach with my son, even if I do it just lying on my back inside a bamboo open-air Mandaya hut at this resort, watching my 10-year old son put on goggles over his eyes, dip his head beneath the clear waters and imagine himself a scuba diver looking for the sunken ruins of the Titanic. and just by watching my son create worlds of his own, I see myself in him, also creating a whole new world in front of me, even if it takes place only on a summer day…

The summers of my childhood

IgHT aCrOss the dusty, screened window of our apartment at Palosapis st at nova Tierra Village in Lanang, you could see three big, tall trees, all fruit-bearing trees : tambis, avocado and a mango tree.

I don’t know how they got there. I reckon the occupants of the bungalow house beside the trees threw a lot of garbage over the fence which included seeds of tambis, avocado and mango several years ago when we weren’t watching.

These trees remind me of the seven summers I had in this apartment located just beside a big mosque here which faces the east. at dawn, when the orange sun is still creeping behind the hills of samal island, which is visible from here, a motley group of birds in this village ---- that include sparrows, sandpipers, swallows, maya, plovers, etc--- would flock over to a grassy vacant lot beside our apartment near the three tall trees that dominate the area here.

The chirping of all these birds, to my ears, is like a symphony I love to hear, together with the crowing of the cocks early in the morning while I’m still lying in bed, my eyes half-closed and catching a glimpse of the growing light from my window. I knew the birds are feasting

How I lost and got back my iPhone

O U k n o w t h a t horrible feeling of realizing you lost something valuable?

That’s what I felt when I couldn’t find my iPhone 5.

It was a present from my husband Carlo, and on top of the monetary value, it was the idea of losing a gift from him that mattered most to me.

I asked a colleague to call my number. Louie said it was ringing but nobody was picking up. I traced back my steps and realized that I had left it in the taxi.

My other office mates had heard of the news. It was Melot who said we could track my iPhone through iCloud (apple’s cloud storage) and sai immediately logged in. I said a silent thank you that I had set up the ‘Find My iPhone’ app in my device, because that would allow us to find it. iCloud showed us a map with the location of my phone, represented by a tiny green circle. It was positioned over a cluster of houses along Diversion road and I realized I would have to knock on each door. What are the chances of complete strangers admitting they had my iPhone? not relishing the idea of getting disdainful looks from strangers, I told myself to let it go. But unlike me, Melot and sai had not given up. sai enlarged the map and the green circle repositioned itself just outside the cluster of houses.

That was better!

That gave me some hope but still a part of me wanted to just let it go—it was all too much effort for a cellphone.

But Melot prodded me to ask for help from another colleague, argie, who had a vast network in the police, and to go to the location on the map.

I was so grateful to argie for his sense of urgency and willingness to help; he did not make it difficult for me to ask. We immediately went to Diversion road and argie pointed to the approximate location of my phone. We saw a taxi headquarters, but instead of going there directly, argie thought it was best to ask Danilo Quia-eo, OIC of the Maa police substation, to accompany us. a woman at the Makulay Taxi base asked us why we were there, looking a bit wary at the sight of the police. after argie’s introduction, I told her what had happened and showed her the map. since there was no other establishment nearest the green circle, I said my phone was definitely within their compound.

To cut the story short, she gave me back my iPhone. The taxi driver, elpedio Oroyan, had found it in his cab and heard the calls and text messages (sent by my other colleague, Marlo), but he didn’t know how to use an iPhone so he couldn’t answer any of them. He decided to drop it off at their base in case someone came for it.

I couldn’t believe my luck. The police were also as amazed as us, marvelling at what technology could do. after a while, I felt sheepish for bothering them at all, but definitely grateful they obliged to our request.

I was puzzled when the woman told me she read a text message on my iPhone asking the finder to call my office phone number. I wondered how she was able to read the message when the device was locked with a PIn code.

Unbeknownst to me, Melot and sai were able to send a text message to my phone through iCloud. It appeared like a pop-up so the finder was able to read it even if the phone was locked. The app will also allow you to remotely lock your device or—if recovering it is already a nil possibility—remotely erase your content.

I felt embarrassed for inconveniencing a lot of people over a material thing such as a cellphone. But the relief I got for not having to tell my husband I had lost his gift to me was more compelling. so I said a silent thanks to technology and profound thanks to my colleagues who cared enough to help – Melot, sai, Louie, Marlo, and argie. so, what are you waiting for? they will be filing the two charges—one against Cebu Pacific for breach of contract of carriage based on the Transportation Laws of the Philippines and another against Cebu Pacific pilots, flight crew and ground personnel for torts. “eventually, the tort case will affect the airline company as principal,” De Leon said.

On Tuesday night, some 40 passengers of the flight that skidded into the runway of the Francisco Bangoy International airport laid the groundwork for a class suit by officially bonding into an organized group calling themselves as “Flight 5J-971 Victims.”

The group is led by andrew Bautista as president, Jun narciso as vice president, and Dr. Jess Delgado as spokesperson.

The three along with a Law school student of ateneo de Davao University and a businesswoman comprise the five-man board of directors who will act as incorporators for the purpose of registration with the securities and exchange Commission (seC).

CLas sUIT, reQUIsITes Under the rules on Civil Procedure, a class suit is resorted to in order to obtain relief for or against a large number of persons as a group or integral entity and not as individuals with rights and liabilities separate from each other.

The requisites of a class suit are: (1) Many persons have a general or common interest in the subject matter of the case; (2) The persons are so numerous that it’s not practical to join them all as parties;

and (3) The parties actually appearing before the court are sufficiently numerous and represented that their interests are fully protected.

In a class suit, there is a single right of action pertaining to numerous persons.

DaMages De Leon said they have not agreed on the amount of damages they will be seeking from the airline company but said they are open for a settlement if Cebu Pacific makes an offer.

“If I were Cebu Pacific, they should make an offer,” De Leon said.

The passengers’ counsel said they are now collating all affidavits of the 165 passengers. “Once we can have it, we will file the complaint with the rTC,” De Leon said.

Bautista, for his part, said they wanted to make it clear that they are filing the case separately from the Davao City government, who on Tuesday also announced its move to file charges against the airline and airport officials.

“We do not want this to be affiliated with the city, we are filing it under our name,” Bautista told this writer in a separate phone interview.

Unlike the city’s recourse to sue also the airport officials, De Leon said they are not filing a case against the officials of the Francisco Bangoy International airport. “not as of the moment but we are asking them for a copy of CCTV recording,” De Leon bared. another phone call to De Leon late yesterday confirmed that he has already sent a request letter to the FBIa management for a copy

of the CCTV recording.

De Leon admitted that the CCTV recording could be a vital piece of evidence in building up their case.

CaaP Has nO CCTV FOOTage On FLIgHT MIsHaP In a separate interview, the Davao International airport (DIa) admitted that it has no closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on what happened during the touchdown of flight 5J-971.

Civil aviation authority of the Philippines (CaaP) Davao airport manager, Fredrick san Felix, said that they only have CCTV cameras in the terminal, but they don’t have any CCTVs positioned in the runway. according to san Felix, the CCTV cameras and infrared devices on the runway are on their wish list “since way back.” However, he said it did not materialize because of lack of budget.

He added that CaaP has made a proposal to install CCTV cameras starting from the parking area of DIa and other strategic airport facilities including the runway. san Felix admitted that their runway footage of the incident is sourced from television reports.

Most of the footages of the mishap were provided by Bautista who took footages from his mobile phone including that of the aircraft pilot window showing an emergency ladder where the pilots were believed to have exited ahead of the passengers.

Bautista also showed footages of passengers alighting through the emergency slide.

With the theme, “Kalamboan ug Kauswagan sa Hiniusang Tribo,” the Davao City Federation of Tribal Councils (DCFTC) will serve as advisory council in the selection of Indigenous People (IP) representative in the city council. republic act 8371 or the Indigenous Peoples (IP) rights act of 1997 requires for a mandatory representation of IPs in local legislative councils and policy-making bodies. It also allows IPs to maintain and develop their own indigenous political structures.

The selection of an IP representative to lo-

cal legislative and policy-making bodies, as provided by the national Commission on Indigenous Peoples (nCIP), shall be in accordance with local guidelines adopted and promulgated by concerned IPs. The IP representative is expected to work on legislative measure which focus on promoting and protecting rights of the IPs, recognize and promote their customs and traditions and enhance their economic and political system to make them productive participants in progress and development.

The IP representative in Davao City is selected on rotation basis among the ten tribes in the

city such as ata, Matigsalug, Ovu-Manuvo, Klata-Djangan, Tagabawa, Tausog, Maguindanao, Maranao, Kagan, and sama.

AzAAR finds are but the next best thing to shopping. For someone who loathes lining up in malls, I am most happy when I am somewhere more subdued and quiet. With the Tienda del Mercado just right around the corner, I frequent (as much as I can) the place to find something new.

That fateful night, I found the best looking and scrumptiously tasting cupcakes, my palate has ever tasted. No doubt, it was more than I have ever tasted. Yes, I cannot even find the right word to describe how luscious and tasty their cakes are.

Meeting and talking with Pastry Chef/Owner Mom and Daughter duo, Maritess and Karla, I found out that their passion for pastries exude the façade of sweetness and goes deeper into the realm of love – love for the craft and love for each other.

Maritess, being the artsy one, taught herself to bake and explore the depths of flavors. With her gusto for making beautiful pieces, she got well into her explorative phase and explored her kitchen and passion for baking. Nowadays, she is into mix and matching flavors into her tiered cakes and cupcakes in order to have more varieties with her products.

In addition, she aims to perfect and make available a different kind of cake decorating to the people of Davao – so, watch out for it.

Karla, on the other

hand, verily handles the marketing side of their business. Finding her way into the world wide web, she socializes their products to a wide niche as possible. Not to mention, Royal Bites consumers have escalated even beyond the archipelagic border of the country. Talk about reigning supreme.

Karla’s Dad, whom I was able to meet, also is supportive of their passion that he accompanies them in bazaars. He may not be battling it in the kitchen, but certainly, he is a third of the dynamic team that produces nothing but the best pastries in town.

Personally, I fell in love with their Red Velvet Cupcake at first bite. Kept the cupcakes at room temperature, it was so light even after a day of purchase. The cream cheese makes you cringe for more as it delectably covers your palate with that oh-so-yummy taste.

Honestly, I cannot sum up a list of my favorites. I love them all. I am not just saying that for publicity sake, but that it the truth.

subtle, you cannot help but have bites after another.

Another personal favorite is their Mint Flavored Cupcake that soothes your palate after every bite. I was taken aback as I felt

the ‘minty kick’ in my mouth after I took a bite.

I loved the way it played with my palate – really, at that. Add the Grenadine Cupcake and your styling it up Gatsby style!

Their Chocolate Overload is one helluva of a cupcake. It was chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate filling -- a magnitude of choco-loco haven in a bite. Another must try is their S’mores Cupcakes, you’d feel the adrenaline in the streets with this one.

Their cupcake version of New York Cheesecakes (Oreo, Blueberry and Manggo) falls under the must-try category. If you have, bless you. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? Light, smooth and firm to the bite – perfect as snack anytime of the day.

One other is their bowls of Chocolate Mousse. Yes,

that delectably rich chocolate goodness taste in every spoonful is addictingly satisfying. I was in definite cloud 9 with every bite.

Notwithstanding the rich taste of chocolates, they too serve a cheesier than usual Cheese Cupcake. Ever the cheese lover, I was munching on these babies early in the morning. Though oozing with cheese, it was not overpowering and did not have that umay taste.

What started, as a school requirement now became one of Davao’s most sought after pastry shops. From one royalty to another, Royal Bites is surely here to stay!

All ‘pho’-ed out

I

love it when it rains, it cools down the environment and makes one crave for soup. Be it Bulalo, Japanese ramen, rich and sticky Makimi, or the clean flavours of Vietnamese Pho, soup never fails to hit the spot whenever you crave something to warm your belly.

One such craving popped up on a recent trip to Manila while walking around Greenbelt with my friends. Even though it was bright and sunny outside the craving for soup got to us. We all wanted something light yet flavourful without the heavy sauces and that is why I decided to go Vietnamese n the form of Le Pettite Camille.

The interior of the restaurant was airy and cozy with cute lamps and an eclectic mix of different colonial French inspired chairs.

Wanting our meal to stay light, we decided to start with some Beef and Vermicelli salad and some Vietnamese Spring Rolls.

Tips on how to make perfect pho.

The beef of the salad was nice and tender, the fish sauce vinaigrette added layers of flavour to the salad while a dash of sriracha sauce (a Thai chili garlic sauce) added a little spice and heat to the dish. The spring rolls with shrimp were also good, the peanut sauce added a sweet and savoury that enhanced the flavours of what would have been a flat tasting roll of noodles and lettuce.
