fter a snail-pace canvassing stymied several times by technical glitches and a hypertensive head of the canvassing body, Davao City’s three reelectionist members of the House of representatives along with 16 of the 24 council members were formally proclaimed last night. representatives Karlo Nograles (first dist.) Ampoloquio dares: ‘File protest’

A

s they say, a woman just changes her mind.

Less than 24 hours after she graciously conceded defeat in Davao City’s second district congressional race, Joji Ilagan-Bian was in a fighting mood again yesterday morning joining some 200 of her supporters who staged a protest rally in front of the Sangguniang Panlungsod building where the canvassing of votes was being held inside the session hall.

“In the morning yesterday, I said elections is over, I accepted the decision, but in the afternoon yesterday, dili na mayo ang pamaagi (the manner (of canvassing) is not good),” Bian said referring to her official statement conceding to reelectionist rep.

Mylene Garcia, who was officially proclaimed winner late last night (see separate story).

Bian’s supporters massed at around 10:00 a.m. right in front of the SP building to protest over the

antics of city board of canvassers (CBOC) presiding chair Aimee Amploquio.

Asked to comment on Bian’s statement, Ampoloquio quickly retorted: “Let her file a protest if she has doubts.”

Bian’s supporters lamented Ampoloquio’s handling of the canvassing proceedings.

On tuesday, Amploquio interrupted the canvassing twice in the afternoon after she complained of nausea and numbness. Her blood pressure was reported as 140/90 and 140/100 in both occasions. She was taken to a hospital by an ambulance of the city’s Central 911, came back after more than two hours but again called off the canvassing. earlier, she declared on the floor that she will be showing the results of the congressional race which was placed at 90 percent complete. the results were not shown and instead, she called it a night.

Ampoloquio’s appar-

ent penchant for taking her own sweet time in the canvassing irked the supporters of Bian who admitted they were on the brink of protesting late tuesday night.

“I want to pacify the people on the ground, in the afternoon, Ampoloquio was active, later on she is sick already,” Bian said.

She bared that she heard reports, that Ampoloquio went out of the session hall with lawyers of her rival rep. Garcia.

“Now the question is Ampoloquio promised that before the night will end, she will flash the results on the screen, but she left without doing so,” Bian said. “Dili lng na para sa akoa, para pud sa mga konsehal, transparent baya dapat ta.”

Bian lamented Ampoloquio’s adamant stand to stay on as presiding officer.

“Ampoloquio knows that people are waiting, she should have been

According to Bian, she saw irregularities in Ampoloquio’s action.

Bian had already conceded as early as tuesday morning to Garcia and offered a hand in reconciliation. However, yesterday’s rally has changed all that.

“I’m now recalling my

decision to concede yesterday, im continuing the fight because this is no longer a transparent process,” Bian said. “I conceded based on the perception that there will be a transparent process.”

Asked if she will be filing an election protest, she said “it’s too early for that.”

“We will accept the decision of the Comelec as long as it is honest and clear. they know that Bian and Garcia fight is very close, they should have

finished the canvassing early,” she added.

According to a Bian supporter, each time Bian takes the lead in the counting, Ampoloquio would give reasons to delay the canvassing, like problems with the Cf cards and her health. the supporters did not elaborate their basis for claiming that Bian was leading in the counting. the group later retreated inside the San Pedro Cathedral compound.

Ilagan-Bian who earlier conceded defeat to rival Mylene Garcia is hurling charges of irregularities at the Board of Canvassers.

Joji Bian withdrew her concession to the lead of incumbent representative Mylene Garcia citing the low turn-out of the results from the second district.

She said she changed her mind after hearing reports that she is leading in the count, and the slow progress of the canvassing of results as the poll body calls for recess every now and then. Bian said she will eventually accept the result of the election after all the returns in the latest political exercise have been accounted for. Bian supporters gathered at the Sangguniang Panlungsod to show support to their candidate.

Senior Inspector Gretchen Cinco, deputy spokesperson of the Police regional Office XI said a total of 128 persons have been arrested for violation of the liquor ban. 122 in the area of responsibility of the Davao City Police Office, two in Davao del Norte and four in Davao del Sur. No violation was reported in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental. All cases would be filed regularly as an election offense. Apprehension on the gun ban violations from January 14 to date: 252; 127 cases filed, a total of 153 firearms confiscated.

Comelec to hold special election in ComVal town t

He Commission on elections (Comelec) has decided to hold a special election in Compostela, Compostela Valley as the two mayoral candidates are in a tight race.

Comelec regional director Wilfred Jay Balisado said they are set to conduct a special election in the polling precincts in Gabi elementary School as more than 800 bal-

lots were interchanged with the ballots that were meant for a barangay in Baguio City. “the votes are still very significant because of the tight competition among the two mayoral aspirants,” Balisado said.

Mayoralty candidates Lema Bolo and Dolfo Ang were in a tight competition, with Bolo having a very slim advantage of six with 13,093 votes over

Ang’s 13,087 votes.

Balisado said there is no difference between the regular midterm election and the special election. “the board of election inspectors will follow the same guidelines and voters will still undergo the same process. the election officers in that polling center has already requested the municipal board of canvassers to wait for the results

of the voting in Barangay Gabi,” he said.

Balisado is also relying on Air 21 to transport the official ballots as soon as possible so that they could start with the voting process in the said polling center by thursday.

He also reminded the mayoralty candidates to avoid initiating any campaign schemes while waiting for the official ballots to arrive. [PNA]

Darlene blames brownouts for upset loss

eNerAL Santos City Incumbent Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio has blamed the prolonged brownouts here in the past months and the public’s “unfounded” perception that the city government has done nothing to address the crisis as among the reasons behind her failed reelection bid in the May 13 elections. the mayor acknowledged that her popularity and those of her party mates in the administration-backed Liberal Party-Achiever’s with Integrity Movement (LP-AIM) had nosedived when the daily rotational brownouts in the area reached seven hours in March.

She said her critics and some residents misjudged her over the outages. Stalwarts of rival camp People’s Champ Movement-United Nationalist Alliance (PCM-UNA) highlighted the issue on the brownouts and the power crisis in their campaign.

“I think it was really the issue of the brownouts (that cost my reelection),” the mayor said in an interview over tV Patrol Socsksargen.

On tuesday, the city board of canvassers (CBOC) proclaimed Custodio’s challenger, top councilor ronnel rivera of the PCM-UNA, as the duly elected mayor. rivera garnered 93,535 votes while Custodio only received 79,053 based on the final and official count released by the CBOC. rivera’s running mate, incumbent Vice Mayor Shirlyn Banas-Nograles, won by landslide over LP-AIM vice mayoral bet eduardo Leyson III. In the city council race, only five LP-AIM incumbent councilors are returning for another three-year term ¬– elizabeth Bagonoc, richard Atendido, Vivencio Dinopol, Marius Oco and eduardo Leyson IV. the five other LPAIM incumbent coun-

cilors – Nepthale Natividad, Dante Vicente, Margareth Santos, remos de Claro and Virginia Llido – lost their seats to PCM-UNA stalwarts.

Aside from issue on the brownouts, the mayor said their party’s chances took a big hit with the endorsement by bloc-voting Inglesia Ni Cristo of the candidacies of rivera, Nograles and seven PCM-UNA city council bets. the religious sect, which had fully backed the LP-AIM in the 2010 elections, only endorsed five members of the latter’s city council slate.

Custodio said they also gathered some evidences that their rival party turned to vote-buying schemes during the homestretch of the campaign. “that is quite known among the people,” she said, without further elaborating.

But overall, the mayor said she has accepted the results of the elections and vowed to

move on.

She said their group had not seen any problem with regards to the canvassing of votes from the city’s 298 clustered precincts. “the people voted for their chosen candidates for whatever reason and that was the result,” the mayor said.

Custodio complimented rivera for his win and challenged the latter to work on his promised changes to the city and unite the city’s constituents.

“I would like to congratulate mayor-elect ronnel rivera. the people have spoken and they have elected you on the basis of change. the election has gone past and politics is over. the city will not move forward if we’re not united. the city is bigger than both of us,” she said. the mayor added that she will focus on taking care of her family when her term finally ends on June 30. Vista Land sees P5B earnings in 2013 L

ISteD Villar-led Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc., the country’s largest homebuilder, expects to generate P5 billion in core net income as it targets to launch P30 billion worth of residential projects in 2013.

Chief executive Officer ricardo tan Jr. expressed optimism of hitting higher revenues this year after the company’s net income rose 29 percent to P1.34 billion in the first quarter in 2013 from P1.04 billion last year. “this reflects that the real estate market is really strong,” he said in a press briefing. tan said the country’s growing population estimated at 100 million and 12 million filipinos working abroad earning to buy a home provide huge opportunities particularly in the lower-end market. the company’s revenues rose 21 percent to P4.86 billion for the

first quarter of this year compared to the P4.02 billion last year.

Manuel Paolo Villar, president and chief executive officer, said the company launched 11 subdivision projects in the first quarter with aggregate value of about P6.4 billion.

Of the total, eight projects are in the low and affordable while three in the middle income segment.

eD by its fully-customizable postpaid plans and the most competitive smartphone offers, Globe telecom’s postpaid business sustained momentum with double-digit growth in subscriber base and revenues in the first quarter of 2013, with postpaid customer base nearing 2 million.

As of end-March 2013, Globe postpaid subscribers totaled 1.9 million, a 21% increase from previous year’s 1.5 million with gross acquisitions soaring to a record-high of over 205,000 in the first quarter, up 35% and 40% against the same period last year and last quarter, respectively. PSCALe developer Landco Pacific Corporation posted a 15.3 percent growth in its sales performance at Q1 of 2013, significantly higher compared to the same period last year. from January to March 2013, total sales amounted to P805 Million while total sales for the same period in 2012 were at P698 Million.

Dabawenyos of all walks of life trooped to the city’s 6,214 precincts to cast their votes and translate a democratic right into a statement—in this country, the ordinary masses decide who will lead them in government.

Of course, that may be a motherhood statement sans all the political linings of the election, Philippine-style.

Monday’s elections was the second in Philippine history using automated machines called PCOS which has a familiar sound like our own currency. the PCOS was undoubtedly the star of the 2013 elections—whether it is by playing the role of a fast-counting and fast-transmitting hero, a villainous and menacing non-functioning bug, or a comic blinking technology flop.

He law establishing the “K plus 12” educational Program in the Philippines has been signed President Benigno Aquino.

Simply put, the program aims to improve the quality of basic education so that its graduates would be prepared for gainful employment and live a productive life. “K plus 12” will look at the possibility of specialized education such as a high school which will focus on the arts or agriculture. the plan adds one more year to both primary and secondary levels after kindergarten. the law’s approval will not altogether stop the debate between those in favor of it and those who are not. the argument has to do with the financial capacity of parents, the number of schools and classrooms, the number of teachers, and even the availability of books and other school supplies.

es or the perennial oppositionists and the professional hecklers will continue to be negative about the new program.

However, it matters little now that it is a law. the period of debate has long ended and what really matters is how the government will implement it and prove to all and sundry that it will work.

If the K-12 education Plan succeeds, then the Philippine education system would be at par with those of other countries in the world.

Clearly, the key to success is to have sufficient government funds to address the above mentioned basic problems that have bedeviled the country’s educational system year end and year out.

Added to these is Internet connectivity, a must in modern-day learning systems.

Another serious problem that needs to be solved is malnutrition among schoolchildren due to poverty. everybody and his uncle knows that this is behind the high dropout rate in our grade schools and the reason why many of our pupils are slow-learners.

In sum, there is no doubt that K-12 is a program worth trying.

NTi-EuroPEANS often fudge the question of whether they would like Britain to quit the single market as well as the eU. they should be invited to clarify precisely what they mean.

Quitting the single market would be extremely bad for the economy, since about half of Britain’s trade is with the eU. this wouldn’t all vanish.

But all sorts of barriers would make it much harder for companies to do business across frontiers, leading to a big rise in unemployment.

Britain has the world’s third-largest stock of foreign direct investment after the United States and China. But multinational companies, which have used Britain as a hub in part because it has access to the single market, would curtail their investment if that was no longer so. the City of London, the UK’s most successful industry, would also suffer if it was cut off from its european hinterland.

Not surprisingly, many eurosceptics don’t want to quit the single market. they think they can have unfettered access to this market without the rules and regulations that irritate them. the idea that Britain can have its cake and eat it is naïve. the rest of the eU might well allow it access to the single market – and even then not on an unfettered basis – but only if the UK abided by its rules. What’s more, it wouldn’t then have a vote on those rules, putting its business at a disadvantage. that’s the position Norway, which is not in the eU, finds itself in. It also has to pay almost as much on a per capita basis as Britain for the privilege of such second-class status. the anti-europeans are fond of lambasting Brussels bureaucracy. they also point to misguided policies such as the Common fisheries Policy, which results in dead fish being thrown back into the sea, or the planned tobin tax, which will gum up financial markets. these attacks are fair, even if they don’t snuff out the case for staying in. But Britain has a golden opportunity to help reform the eU. this is because the main solution to the euro zone’s crisis is to make it more competitive. It’s a misconception to suppose that the euro zone is charging towards political, fiscal and banking union – as Germany is just not willing to pay for it.

Instead, the single market needs to be properly extended to services. free trade needs to be promoted with other blocs such as America. And capital markets should be boosted as a solution to europe’s banking malaise.

Cameron needs to start pushing this agenda now. Achieving it would not just be good for Britain. It would increase the chance of persuading the electorate to vote yes in any referendum.

HILe the 2013 midterm elections was marked by tension, violence and allegations of fraud in some places of the country, that was not the case in Davao City which has maintained a reputation for holding relatively peaceful polls. I saw the televised concession of defeat by Davao City’s losing congressional candidates Luis C. Bonguyan (1st district, and Joji Ilagan Bian (2nd district).

Losing a bitterly fought election campaign that was at times marked by personal insults and yet find the courage and grace to publicly accept defeat and sound the call for unity is a laudable trait.

All over the country, thousands of tons of campaign materials littering the landscape from Aparri to Jolo are mute testimony to the Pinoy’s love for politics and elections, bar none. As the countdown to e-Day narrowed, the Pinoy became more feverish by the day, and the more campaign propaganda materials he ground out. Now that it’s all over except for a few laggard BeIs here and there, the only feverish Pinoys left are the losers. Imagine the unpaid bills they still have to reckon with, a bitter pill to swallow. Nobody loves a loser, as the saying goes. But don’t expect him to collect all the campaign trash he left behind on the campaign trail. the city environment and natural resources (Cenro) is one government agency that has no love for elections.

U.S.-Russian initiative on Syria

He recent U.S.-russian initiative on the Syria issue and the agreement reached by the two powers on the necessity of an international conference on Syria increase chances for a peaceful resolution in the conflict-stricken country, political experts said.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has recently paid a visit to Moscow and agreed with his russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to hold an international peace conference on Syria. the intended conference is meant to revive a previous one held in late June 2012 in Geneva and sponsored by the two powers, which called for immediate ceasefire between Syrian fighting parties and launching inter-Syrian dialogue for a transitional government. “this is a point of balance reached in the positions of russia and the United States,” said Mohamed al-Saeed edrees, head of the Arab and regional Studies Department at Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. edrees told Xinhua that the situation in Syria has reached a point “that does not tolerate pursuing a military solution,” particularly in light of the recent escalations including the Israeli airstrikes on Syria and the exchange of accusations between Syria’ s regime and opposition of using chemical weapons,” which is U.S. President Barack Obama’ s red line.” “these escalations took the United States to a dead-end while it does not want to clash with regional and international powers such as russia and Iran, especially that China is also against a military solution to the crisis,” edrees explained.

Kerry also sent U.S. Ambassador to Damascus, robert ford, to Istanbul to meet with Syrian opposition representatives to prepare for the proposed peace conference.

Arab affairs, noted that the United States reaffirmed from the beginning that it was against a military interference in Syria. “the change is that the United States has become more concerned about the growing Islamists from Nusra front and the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in Aleppo,” Khallaf told Xinhua.

He said that turkey also warned the United States that if Syria fell, the Kurdish groups in Syria might secede and seek forming their so-called “Greater State of Kurdistan” with their fellows in Syria, turkey, Iran and Iraq. “the concern about growing Islamists is behind the relative change of the U.S. position,” Khallaf said. the ex-diplomat said that the proposed international conference on Syria could be “the suitable mechanism for the interests and positions of all parties concerned and it would be stronger if sponsored by the United Nations, not by the two big powers.”

If successful, the conference would help set up a transitional government and might require “full-fledged” UN peacekeeping forces in Syria to ensure commitment of all parties, Khallaf said. the new invitation for “an international conference” shows that the United States and russia are interested in bringing all related international and regional parties together, including China, the Arab League, the european Union and even Iran.

“It is a new approach that must be used and invested by all parties, not only the Syrian regime,” Khallaf concluded. the Arab League has recently welcomed the U.S.-russian initiative when Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi made it clear that “All Arab states support an international conference in Geneva based on the recent U.S.russian agreement.” [PNA/Xinhua]

Comeback: America’s new economic boom COMMENTARY

OW Chemical has compiled a list of 108 new energy-intensive manufacturing projects (which includes plants by more than 80 companies) either under construction or in development, with a total planned investment of almost $100 billion. About a third are under way or due to start construction this year; 60 percent are scheduled to start construction by 2015. A census of energy-intensive industries, including chemicals, steel, fertilizer, paper and refining, among others, by economists at the American Chemical Council, using a model like Yergin’s for direct and induced employment, suggests that growth in just those industries will generate 1 million new permanent jobs by 2017 and some $342 billion in additional annual GDP (yet another 2 percent). the energy bonanza comes on top of powerful trends already flowing in America’s favor. A ferocious Chinese trade assault in the first half of the 2000s decimated U.S. manufacturing employment. But China’s great success has been transforming its own economy. Chinese and U.S. labor costs, when adjusted for worker productivity, are rapidly converging, according to the Boston Consulting Group and others, even without the energy bonus. Chinese worker productivity is still growing at about 8 percent a year, an extraordinary rate — but worker compensation is growing more than twice as fast. from 2000 to 2010, wages in the Yangtze delta, a manufacturing hotbed, jumped from 72 cents an hour to $8.62. that brings U.S. and Chinese costs close enough to parity to highlight the aggravations, including long delivery lead times, that come with offshoring. the U.S. cost advantage over Japan and europe is even higher — Boston Consulting puts it in the 25 percent to 45 percent range, and the U.S. may also have the world’s best trade logistics capabilities.

Just within the past year, Japanese and Korean automobile companies have been expanding their U.S. plants, or building new ones, to service the european market. Siemens has begun producing gas turbines in Virginia for export to Saudi Arabia. “re-shoring” has become a mantra at U.S. business schools.

Official economic forecasters, however, like the Congressional Budget Office and the Organization for economic Co-operation and Development, still foresee only a long twilit road to nowhere, with the United States limping painfully along at 2 percent to 2.5 percent growth to the farthest horizon. they point to a shrinking and aging labor force, and the drag of debt and deficits. But growth only at the U.S. average since 1950 — 3.3 percent a year — quickly puts debt and deficits on a downward path as a share of GDP. Labor force shrinkage has also been exaggerated by the sharp drop in male labor force participation, particularly among men without a college education.

Consider, half all manufacturing jobs lost since 1979, the peak year of U.S. manufacturing employment, were lost from 2001 to 2007. Still-fresh shocks like that drive workers to the sidelines. As jobs open up again, however, participation rates can be expected to rise.

He city environment and natural resources office (Cenro) has deployed 350 street sweepers, including park maintenance personnel, tuesday evening to ‘go bayanihan’ in cleaning up election materials such as posters and tarpaulins, around the city.

Cenro chief Joseph Dominic felizarta told edge Davao that the estimated timeframe for the cleanup is two weeks which will consist of removing election paraphernalia posted in public places. “this is a continu-

ing effort, we will not wait for the political candidates to clean up their mess because it keeps raining and these materials may cause clogging of canals,” he explained, adding that some parts of the downtown area, toril, Calinan and Mintal are already clean of election materials.

He Department of education (Deped) 11 hailed the signing of the enhanced Basic education Act of 2013, commonly known as K+12 Basic education program, into law by President Benigno Aquino yesterday.

Students will now undergo kindergarten plus 12 years of basic education (six years Primary education, four years Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]), before going to college.

With this, students will be provided sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

It includes seven learning areas under the Core Curriculum. these are: Languages, Literature, Communication, Mathematics, Philosophy, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.

jects are also embedded in the SHS curriculum.

Jenielito Atillo, spokesperson of Deped-11, told edge Davao yesterday that Deped sees a bright future in the education system of the country.

“Before this program was signed into law, we really pushed it to have a better education program in the country.

Now that our dream has come true, we are very happy,” Atillo said.

He added that the program will provide more knowledge, skills

and opportunities which further equip students as far as the demands of life are concerned. “this will certainly help them in acquiring work even after they finish secondary education,” he said.

reSIDeNt Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday, May 15, signed the enhanced Basic education Act of 2013 into law, more commonly known as the K-12 program.

WIth the law passed, students will now undergo “Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]), before heading into higher education.” this adds two years to the basic education system in an effort to further prepare students for the world ahead.

In a speech by President Aquino on the signing of the K-12 law, he noted the strengths of implementing the K-12 law.

Of the implementation of universal indergarten in public and private schools and and other initiatives for basic education up to junior high school, Aquino said, “tinitiyak nating sapat at kapaki-pakinabang ang kasanayang naibabahagi sa ating mga magaaral (We ensure the what is taught and imparted to students is adequate and beneficial to them).”

Of having a senior high school track in the

He province of Davao del Norte successfully defended its crown in the National Population Quiz when Kate Gizelle Samsona clinched the 2013 competition held in tacloban City, recently.

Provincial Health Officer Agapito Hornido said 16-year old Samsona, who just graduated valedictorian from the Sto. tomas National High School, bested 16 other contestants after garnering 24 points in the contest.

Samsona received a P15,000 cash prize, medal and a trophy in the competition, which started in the late 70s as an advocacy tool primarily aimed at increasing awareness and interest of the youth on population issues and concerns that affect their lives.

Hornido said this is the second consecutive victory of the province, since Allin Joy Camile, who came from the same school, bagged the national contest held in Ilo-ilo City last year.

Both Samsona and Camile were trained by Coach Leah Navarez, with the support of Provincial Population Officer Camilo De Guzman.

Class 1 are caves with archeological findings and are for scientific and educational purposes only. these caves can also be utilized for exploration, mapping and photography.

Class II are caves with wildlife that cannot be disturbed, hence visitors with cave guides are allowed only to a certain point of the cave.

Class III are caves where the whole part is

allowed for spelunking (with cave guides). these are the caves most appropriate for ecotourism purposes. the caves found in Davao del Norte are: Okbot cave, Alina cave, Kapunit cave, Kambal cave, Underground cave, Gitgitan cave, Sayaw cave, Otso cave, Gr cave, all in the municipality of Kapalong; Mangitngit cave in San Isidro; Borja cave, tibyun cave, Gayas cave, Paradise cave, rickton cave, roman cave, Bongsit cave, all in municipality of New Corella; tamburong cave, Manan-ao cave, Sion Bat cave, Bandera cave 1 and 2, Linggasakan cave, Baga cave, Garcia cave, Baong cave, taclobo cave 1 and 2, Pandan cave and Santol cave, all in Island Garden City of Samal. for Laak, Compostela Valley Province, the caves are Sto. One fine gastronomical feast First out was the seafood paella negra, which was so fragrant; you cannot help but dig in.

UsUally, we would meet after class to enjoy a buffet or chitchat over coffee in one of Davao’s places to be. This has been our routine. Coined as the ‘Thursday group or OD group’, we would always convene even after a tedious battle with sanity. That was how I spent my last semester as an MBa student.

For some, graduation marks the end but for me, it was just the start. I can verily recall how my mom kidded, ‘it is your third time to graduate, what do you want to do with your life?’ Really, that was the third time I donned a hood and marched. By the time I took my walk, it hit me. Do I further my studies or get a life? ha-ha Nowadays, I can say I love the pressure and the messy organizer/planner that came with it. I feel blessed to have taken the big leap outside the ‘school premises’ and into the world of the employed. although there are days that I feel spaced out, I still thank the many assignments, tasks and opportunities that mold me to be better than the best.

More so, I am thankful for having friends who understand my schedule – even if I cannot understand it. They know that I need to ‘clear things out’ before I can say yes. However, this time it was different. It was an ambush-after-work-dinner that took place. and I feel so blessed to have taken the first step of not looking at my schedule!

last time I checked, I was craving for their cake and he was not able to get me one. This time, Dennis Molina, Freah Ramos and I sat as we anticipated our meal. stuck by their insanely large menu, we panicked and ordered—more than, as usual. Well, what’s new?!

While waiting for the food, we chatted about life (not ours! He-he) and reminisced the many corners of the academe. Ultimately, it was our usual animated ill-filled and curse on the side ‘talk’ –normal.

First out was the seafood paella negra, which was so fragrant; you cannot help but dig in. The lemon made it more aromatic. The seafood was just right, the rice perfectly cooked and you can truly appreciate the explosion

Paella Negra. of flavors in your palate. It was a symphony of flavors, I must say.

Next came the stewed chicken in tomato. We cannot help but appreciate the big pieces and the sauce that you could smell from across the table. It was unbelievably juicy -sarap to the bones! With or without rice, it was perfect --something that I would definitely have again. last came the fish ala pobre. Not much of a fish fan (choosy when it comes to fish dishes) but this one made me believe in love again. It was tender and the potatoes complimented the contrasting texture of the ingredients. It was a haven of textures in the palate! Try the fish without the sauce or rice even and you’ll never look back.

The merrymaking continued until dessert was served. Dennis went on to order their yema cake while Freah, who has been craving for their cake, got the Braso de Mercedes cake. I, on the other hand, got the best of both worlds – they told me not to get one. as usual, their cakes were to-die-for. It was delectable by eyes more so by taste. It was pure bliss.

I would not spoil your curiosity, you have to have them to know what I’m talking about!

Angelina Jolie reveals having double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer ANGeLINA JOLIe has always been adept at taking people’s breaths away— but, we admit, she just knocked the wind out of us.

The Oscar-winning mother of six reveals in an op-ed coming out in Tuesday’s New york Times that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy in February after doctors told her that she carried the “’faulty’ gene” BrCA1 and had roughly an 87 percent risk of contracting breast cancer.

“I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive,” writes Jolie, 37. “So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together.

We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer.

And it has.”

And, from the sound of it, Jolie’s intention was to make more than her immediate family feel comfortable and capable of dealing with such a challenge.

“I choose not to keep my story private because there

are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer,” she writes. “It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.”

She admits that the decision was “not easy” but she is “very happy” with it, and her risk of breast cancer has dropped to “under 5 percent.”

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.”

The actress also revealed that she was told she has approximately a 50 percent risk (the actual number varies based on the individual) of developing ovarian cancer, of which her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at only 56.

But, Jolie writes, she “started with the breasts” because the process was more complex.

She describes the multipart ordeal of having the double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, all of which she just completed on April 27. (And doesn’t it seem as if she was still traveling the world throughout that whole period?)

Because she was, for the most part, marveling how waking up “with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts...does feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery you can be back to a normal life.”

“During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work,” Jolie acknowledged.

“But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.”

And for sharing her story, many women will surely be thanking her in the morning.

The veteran actor added, “I think she is quite magnificent in the way she is handling this. She is taking care of things. She does careful diligence and she has this courage to gather information and make decisions from it. It has been very successful and I heard she was able to travel soon afterwards.”

fection for his daughter seems to know no bounds.

“She is an amazing person.

She is also an extraordinary mother. She includes them [her children], when she can without scaring them, and makes it understandable to them,” he told e! WITH a spurt of growth, with new hotels and malls sprouting all over Durianburg, you can be sure that the dining scene in Davao is fast changing as well.

I was lucky enough last week as to be able to experience the newest and probably the most chic dining establishments to open lately is seda abreeza’s Misto that is located at the hotel’s ground floor.

Misto, which is Italian for “mix”, is an all-day dining concept that is interactive, casual and relaxed.

Being located right beside the hotel’s lobby and elounge, it is easy to see that the restaurant is designed for people coming in and out of the hotel to mix and mingle.

The Conrad Onglao designed interiors of Misto reflect a sophisticated yet cozy ambience that is immediately familiar and feels genuinely Filipino.

restaurant, but it is in the food where Misto shines. able to seat up to 90 diners comfortably, Misto (true to its name) serves a mix of international and local cuisines. Given that each seda Hotel has their own Misto restaurants, with their own locally inspired dishes, it was tasked to seda abreeza’s Executive sous Chef, Giovanna Flores to come up with unique eats to tickle the Dabawenyo’s choosy palate.

abreeza’s General Manager Jeffrey Enriquez “that is why aside from the standardised items in the menu like our steaks and pasta, we also made sure that each Misto had its own different local fare. so the local dishes you see at Misto at Centrio are totally different from the local dishes you will taste here at abreeza.” so wanting to taste the unique flavours of Misto at seda abreeza, I got started with their Pla Dib, Chef Flores’ fusion dish of native Davao kinilaw with coconut milk sprinkled with crushed chicharon executed in a Thai spicy flavour. I loved the fresh taste of the fish coupled with the rich coconut milk.

The added chillies and the salty crunch coming from the tuna chicharon added heat and a unique texture to the dish.

I also had a swipe at their sisig samosa, a fried wonton pocket of rich and fatty pig face meat paired

with tangy native spiced vinegar. The vinegar added a sharp punch that cut through the fattiness of the dish.

For the main course, I had Misto’s Grilled Tuna Belly Teriyaki. The rich fattiness of the tuna belly paired well with the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce.

The grill added a delicious smokiness to the dish that is reminiscent of a day spent at the beach. and what is a meal without dessert? I had two, Misto’s Tiramisu (which is served with a shot of Kahlua) and their Chocolate Mouse which uses Valrhona chocolate and fresh strawberries, both were simply divine! so when in need of a gustavian adventure in Davao why not mix it up at Misto?

KNICKS LICKED I NDIANAPOLIS (AP) -the Indiana Pacers finally figured it out.

When given the chance to take command of a playoff series, they can’t give it back. On tuesday night, they didn’t.

George Hill scored 26 points and Paul George had 18 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, leading the Pacers past the New York Knicks, 9382 and to within one win of their first conference finals appearance since 2004. ‘’We wanted it,’’ George said. ‘’for us to come out with that edge, still, after being up 2-1 and being on our floor for Game 4, for us to be up and ready and have an edge to play, it just speaks to how focused we are right now.’’

It was a far cry from what Indiana experienced a week ago in New York. Or last year at home against Miami.

Last week, the Knicks rallied from a Game 1 loss, using a 30-2 run to blow out Indiana at Madison Square Garden and even the series.

A year ago, the Pacers

held a 2-1 lead over Miami but gave away Game 4 and never won again. Miami went on to win the NBA crown.

So the Pacers went into tuesday night determined not let it happen again, certainly not with former stars reggie Miller and rik Smits in the house watching their old team hand it to their old rivals. ‘’I just think that our focus has been better than it was,’’ Indiana’s David West said. ‘’We might have surprised ourselves going in there and getting Game 1. Naturally, we may have had a little letdown, but we talked about maintaining our home court and our focus in these two games and we were able to accomplish that. Our next goal is to compete hard with an opportunity for a close-out game in a tough environment.’’ the Pacers were strong defensively again, had another big rebounding advantage (54-36) and never really let the Knicks challenge them in the second half. they can wrap up the series thursday night in New York.
