n her message to dabawenyos on World Earth Day, Senator Pia Cayetano cited the city government for its practice of ecogovernance and urged Dabawenyos to “get greener.”

“Davao City should strive to be greener,” the lady senator told Department of Tourism (DOT) region 11 director Art Boncato moments after she finished a triathlon event in Davao on Sunday at Villa Josefina, Toril.

Sen. Cayetano is a health and environment advocate who is very active in sports as a way to deliver her mes-

sage for Filipinos to be live a healthy lifestyle and keep the environment clean. She hinted at “ecogovernance” as a way of championing the cause for the environment.

Boncato bared that Sen. Cayetano said Davao City should strive to be greener, “Davao is already green but it still has room to be greener.”

According to Boncato, the lady senator is aware how strict Davao City is when it comes to cleanliness, with the anti-smoking ordinance as the best example. The same ordinance will be strengthened further

In intensifying the Solid Management Ordinance, Davao City Environment and natural resources Office (CEnrO) cited the winning barangays yesterday in front of the City hall of Davao.

CEnrO chief, lawyer Joseph Dominique Felizarta bared the following winners at the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw in SM Annex yesterday:, Barangay Dumoy in Talomo under barangay captain Jessie Mar Culaste, second prize with P500, 000 worth for barangay projects; and Barangay Lapulapu under barangay captain Julieto Icoy, third prize with P300, 00 worth

for barangay projects.

Winning consolation prizes were: barangay 14-B; barangay 28-C; barangay San Antonio; barangay Centro; barangay Sasa; barangay Mintal; and barangay Calinan.

“The money will be given to them if they (winning barangays) can submit the design of their project to CEnrO,” he said.

The competiton was launched by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio last year.

“There are 90 barangays who submitted their letter of intent to join the contest and only 33 of them completed the documentary requirements,” he explained.

The selection process was spearheaded by the Solid Waste Management Board composed of representatives from the Department of Environment and natural resources (DEnr) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). (CMP)

These nuns produce herbal medicines T

hEIrS are the hands committed to spread the gospel and at the same time respond to the needs of the poor particularly on health and wellness.

The handmaids of the Christ the King or ACr sisters (referring to the Latin term of their name: Ancillae Christi regis) have ventured into herbal processing to address the growing demand for alternative medicine in the locality.

“We a started the herbal production three years ago through our Archdiocese health Apostolate program. Since we don’t have money to star-up the said venture, we simply make use of available materials in our community,” recalled Mother Superior Concordia Pingoy or Sister Inday as the ACr Sisters fondly call her.

“Our community (ACr sisters) owns three-hectare farm land planted to fruit trees particularly mangosteen, guyabano, malunggay, and herbal plants such as sambong, and turmeric (yellow ginger) which serve as raw materials of our herbal products,” she said.

Today, the ACr sisters are now producing at least 20, 000 mangosteen capsules a week and sells it to as low as P3.00 a capsule in their designated outlet in Tagum City, a situation which is far off from their humble beginnings.

“We used to painstak-

ing produce the mangosteen capsules with our bare hands pounding the dried mangosteen rind into powder with mortar and pestle,” said Sister Elsie Montederamos.

The powdered rind are then put into biodegradable capsules and packed for sale. The proceeds are used as revolving fund to produce more herbal capsules to support their apostolic and charitable activities.

“Through word of mouth, the demand for our product gradually picked up as those who have tried and felt its benefits are ones endorsing it,” said Sister Elsie.

Although the product has now a lot of customers, Sister Elsie who also takes charge of their health apostolate recalled that the process of extracting the fruit’s healing power did not come easy at first.

They did not only endure the laborious production process but has to overcome an ordeal of being summoned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to respond to the complaint on imitation as well as product safety.

“One company has accused us of imitating their products, but truth is we had learned the numerous benefits mangosteen fruit long before we engaged ourselves in our church’s health apostolate,” she said.

Wary about the complaint the ACr Sisters decided to upgrade their facilities and sought the help of their benefactors and supporters.

port,” said Sister Inday.

“The DA through its high Value Crops Development Program (hVCDP) visited our herbal processing and assessed our needs. In just a short time, their assistance keep on coming,” she said.

The ACr sisters said they did not expect that will DA provide them majority of their needs which to them is like the proverbial “manna from heaven.”

The package of assistance provided by the DA-hVCDP were: hammer mill, dryer, and capsulizer which are essential materials not only in increasing

their production but also in ensuring quality and safety of their products. “herbal processing is a value-adding activity where fruits and vegetables are processed into food supplements. however, we must ensure that these products do not compromise food safety concerns. The best way to do it is for manufacturer, in this case the ACr Sisters, must mechanized its production,” said DA-hVCDP coordinator Melani Provido.

“We responded to their request for upgrading us the herbal process-

ing activity does not only provide cheap alternative medicine to poor consumers but also help increase farmers’ income as supplier of their raw materials,” she added.

Sister Inday said their raw materials are sourced out from local farmers.

Mangosteen fruits are bought from P30 – P40 pesos a kilo but could each as high a P500 a kilo during lean months.

hErE’S certainly no idle time for Tagumeño children this summer as the City Government of Tagum and the City of Tagum Tourism Council spearheaded the 5th edition of the EarthFest.

The said festival gathers children all across the city for ten days from April 8-21, 2013 where they were taught on visual arts and dance arts.

On April 22-May 5, 2013, another set of children will be taught on theater arts and music.

Last April 21, 2013, about 159 Tagumeño children conducted their highly-anticipated dance recital and visual arts exhibition at the Gaisano Grand Mall in Barangay Apokon.

One room at the Gaisano Grand Mall was transformed into an exhibition site where the works of children were

artistically hanged, eliciting smiles from both the children and their family members.

Tourism Council Chairperson Alma L. Uy, along with proud and excited parents, witnessed the said event, which literally turned the mall’s atrium into an arena of children’s raw talents.

In her speech, Mrs. Uy the council and the city government remain committed in their collaboration for the total development of children, citing that the City Tourism Office will allocate a portion outside their office where the artworks of children shall be posted all year round.

“Environmental protection is a gut issue because environmental issues matter to our own survival. Funding should be provided in the GAA and in the budgets of LGUs for relocation or for housing, most especially for communities that are in danger. Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction should become part of the DepEd curriculum and there should be mandatory training for LGUs and for frontline agencies,” the Senator added.

The Senator also encouraged Filipinos to adopt an environment-conscious lifestyle.

“We should clean and protect our rivers and lakes. We should push for community-based heritage tourism and ensure that climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction are issues that are understood up until the barangay level,” she said.

Vegetable production generates P34.7M

EGETABLE production in Davao City proved to be one of the most viable sources of livelihood among farmers generating an average P34.69 million annual production value, according to the records obtained from the City Agriculturist’s Office.

Davao City’s top vegetable produce are eggplant, stringbeans, squash, ampalaya and tomato which yielded 4,387 metric tons in combined annual volume of production.

The key production areas of these vegetables covered a total of 620 hectares with squash cornering the bulk 180 hectares followed by squash with 176 hectares and stringbeans with 117 hectares. Ampalaya covered 103 hectares while tomatoes are grown to only 44 hectares.

Eggplant, squash and ampalaya are predominantly grown in Marilog, Toril and Paquibato while the production areas of stringbeans are in Tubok, Toril and Calinan. Tomato is grown mostly in Torial

and Baguio.

Squash topped in terms of production volume with 1,517 metric tons annually but placed third in terms of production value, generating P4.72 million. The prevailing price of squash at the Bankerohan Public Mrket ranges from P8 to P10 per kilo.

Eggplant followed with 1,070 metric tons and ranked second in terms of production value with P7.99 million. The prevailing price of the vegetable in the public market ranged between P20 to P25 per kilo.

Ampalaya ranked far third with 859 metric tons production volume but it topped in terms of production value with P12.12 million. The vegetable has a prevailing price of P30 to P40 per kilo at the public markets.

Strinbeans placed fourth with 522 metric tons production volume and ranked third in production value at P5.22 million.

Selling price of vegetables at the public markets ranged between P20 to

P25 per kilo.

Tomato posted the lowest both in production volume, with 418 metric tons, and in value, with P4.6 million. Tomato’s performance is ex-

pected as it is grown to only 44 hectares.

But a closer look at the data showed that tomato is the second most valuable vegetable in Davao City. A metric ton

Gains in agro-based products growth seen in PHL exports

hE growth of agro-based exports may be sustained with the opening up of new markets for sugar and bananas, according to the national Economic and Development Authority (nEDA).

“In addition to South Korea and India, Indonesia and the Middle East, were also identified as potential market for sugar,” said nEDA officer-in-charge (OIC) and Deputy Director-General Emmanuel F. Esguerra.

The Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC) and the Sugar regulatory Administration identified these markets.

But the PITC is still coordinating with the buyers in these countries on their specific requirements.

The United States (US), russia, China, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India are among the major importers of raw (cane) sugar, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Statistics of the United nations.

A joint Un-habitat and UnEP report launched in nairobi stressed that cities are key drivers of low carbon transition and governments must prioritize greening of critical infrastructure such as housing, water supply and sanitation, transport and energy.

“The design, construction and operation of infrastructures, such as energy, waste, water, sanitation and transport, create a socio-technical environment that shapes the way of life of citizens and how they procure, use and dispose resources,” said the Un report titled “City Level Decoupling. Urban resource flows and the governance of infrastructure transitions.”

The report, compiled by the UnEP affiliated International resource Panel, emphasized that proper urban planning alongside investments in resource efficient technologies will power green growth in cities.

The 21st century has witnessed rapid urbanization and this scenario

presents new challenge to environmental and human health alongside social and political stability in the absence of policy and legal safeguards.

The Un report decried overconsumption of limited resources that is responsible for rampant pollution and carbon emissions in cities.

“Because the majority of the world’s population now lives in cities and because cities are where most resource consumption takes place, the pressures and potentials to find ways to reconcile economic growth and sustainable use of natural resources is greatest in the metropolis,” noted the report.

It reiterated that it is possible to promote urbanization while maintaining ecological health if governments invest in technologies and innovations that scale up green housing, lighting and transport.

“As cities have grown, mainstream thinking on urban development and planning has increasingly acknowledged the link between human and natural environment.

There is need for countries to roll out interventions that help achieve a balance between urban economic development, long-term ecological sustainability and social justice,” said the Un report.

ral resources (DEnr) said the awarding of the financial aid formally put into implementation the EU’s environment program to help accelerate the country’s shift toward sustainable consumption and production (SCP).

The DEnr chairs the steering committee for the implementation of SWITCh-Asia in the Philippines, while the Department of Energy (DOE), the

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the national Economic Development Authority (nEDA) are key partners.

SWITCh-Asia Programme is a regional grant facility funded by the EU. Its goal is to “contribute to green growth, poverty reduction and climate change mitigation in Asia,” specifically by promoting sustainable modes of consumption

and production.

According to Gerochi, the program serves as “an opportunity to reverse the trend of economic development at the cost of the environment through better practices in production and consumption, especially by shifting to producing goods and offering services in an environmentally sustainable manner and patronizing those with less adverse environmental impact.”

Dynamic Eco-leaders ready to Stand (LEADErS) for Environmental Concern” was sponsored by the Davao City Water District in coordination with the Watershed Management youth Council (WMyC) and the Watershed and Environmental Protection Coalition in Davao (WEPCD).

Speakers from different agencies were invited to enrich the knowledge of the youth participants and inspire them to become leaders in their own right and advocates of environmental protection.

In the Philippines, Earth Day was celebrated with the theme “Eco Governance.”

According to its proponents, eco governance is the ecological and economic system of intentions, policies, processes and regulations of organizations and corporations. Eco governance ensures the eco-responsibility of certain individuals and organizations to obtain ecological sustainable environment and real prosperity.

It may sound too technical but in simple terms, eco governance is the amalgamation of all programs involving both public and private sector geared towards a balanced ecology

Davao City is one local government unit which can be said to be operating under the eco governance platform with such regulations like the ban on use of non-biodegradable plastic and the anti-smoking ban. however, there’s a lot left be desired despite the eco activism stance of the city government. The implementation of eco governance is not merely a word of mouth, sloganeering and poster advocacy. It’s not simple a motherhood statement and telltale images of political will. It’s everyone’s serious business and perhaps, the lack of a deeper understanding of eco governance could lead to a lack of attention to details.

Eco governance involves not only a change in paradigm and policy directions but more importantly, a change in people’s attitude and lifestyle.

And yes, even in an eco active locality like ours, that bold change is not done overnight.

USInESS ethics is too bland.

That t h o u g h t crossed my mind during a quite good speech on the topic by Vincent nichols last week at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The Catholic Archbishop of Westminster said many things, but his main idea of how to improve businesses can be summed up in one sentence: “All businesses big or small should be able to demonstrate how they are making the world a better place through providing goods that are truly good, or services that truly serve people, and, by doing so, create employment and fair returns to investors, whilst minimising harm”.

A few moral relativists or free-market ideologues might argue with that, but most business people think they are already behaving as the archbishop thinks they should. They usually see themselves as well-meaning cogs in a basically benign economic machine which provides people with a remarkable array of desired goods and services, and does so efficiently, safely and in a way that is fair to workers and the world.

That self-image is fair. Most businesses in developed economies do work to a quite high ethical standard.

Still, nichols is hardly alone – and not wrong – in worrying that some businesses have ethical problems.

The concern explains why business ethics has become a standard part of the curriculum in MBA programmes, and the existence of numerous initiatives to promote corporate social responsibility and other virtues. The main problem with these worthy efforts is blandness: it’s not clear what business ethics classes are supposed to teach or what, for example, should be the aim of the Westminster archdiocese’s programme “A Blueprint for Better Business”.

One possibility is that ethical instruction should induce qualms.

Moral training might have restrained the captains of finance from excessive bets and pay demands before and after the 2009 crisis, but I doubt it. Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs may have been only half-joking when he said the company he headed was doing “God’s work”. he sees high pay as an appropriate reward for doing a good job in Goldman’s basically good businesses.

If finance is to be made more ethical, nichols and other crusaders will have to offer something more substantial and detailed than eloquent but vague calls for virtue. They will need to offer fairly sophisticated economic and sociological analyses. It is much the same for most other ethical issues in business. The obvious vices – dishonesty, deception, wilful damage, cruel treatment – are already considered unacceptable.

Simple condemnations of greed and calls for solidarity are not enough to deal with problems such as excessive consumerism, irresponsible investing and manipulative advertising.

Caught between the horns of a dilemma

nCE in a while, an incident happens in which two or more issues involving two or more forces collide and force us to confront a dilemma.

Such was the case recently, on the night of April 20 in Gingoog City, when what could have been an ambuscade or a routine encounter (depending on which side to believe) between government and rebels took place. The incident ended with two fatalities and several wounded including Mayor ruthie Guingona of Gingoog City who, fortunately, survived gunshot wounds in her arm and leg.

Mayor Guingona of course is the wife of former senator and vice president Teofisto Guingona Jr. and mother of incumbent senator Teofisto III. She was on her way home from a fiesta in which she crowned the queen, in the course of which she also campaigned for her daughter Stella Marie to be crowned as the city’s next mayor when her third term expires in June. Such are the demands of dynasty-building! next day the rebel spokesperson, Jorge Madlos, was heard on radio saying that it wasn’t an ambush but a routine procedure gone bad at a checkpoint established to ensure that the “policies” of the revolutionary movement are respected and obeyed by all concerned.

Madlos went on to say they had only wanted to “hold” the convoy and talk to the Mayor, and also to disarm her bodyguards because they had no prior permission. Then he issued a warning to all politicians entering their “guerilla zone” not to do so with-

Such is reality in an irresolute society.

In any case, this incident brings to the fore two festering issues that bedevil our society, both in violation of the Constitution, both presenting us with the horns of a dilemma. One, what do we do about the government’s failure to dismantle armed groups, establish peace and order, and protect society? Two, what do we do about officials who blithely defy Article II, Section 26, of the Constitution which guarantees equal access to opportunities for public service, prohibiting political dynasties accordingly?

Both issues create tension and harm national solidarity. In the face of government failure to enforce either constitutional mandate, what can hapless citizens do—the very citizens in whom the republic’s sovereignty reside and from whom all government authority emanates—about such impunity?

Moreover, even as we are threatened by this armed group, the media actually encourages and emboldens them by being complicit in their propaganda. how else to interpret their practice of reaching out to enemy spokespersons for their views on events? When it comes to sensationalizing the news, anything goes!

It taxes credulity that the media,

especially broadcast stations, do not know they are helping to destabilize society when they provide microphones to subversive propagandists free of charge. It costs a lot to do a broadcast if you’re a civilian or a candidate, you know. But for those that seek to undermine our government and destabilize our society, it costs nothing. And how does this square with the media’s avowed Code of Ethics?

On the other hand, what’s a citizen to do about defiant officials, putative public servants, that exploit the law’s infirmity by establishing political dynasties which the Constitution expressly prohibits? We are caught between the horns of a dilemma.

One wonders where the Guingonas and other privileged families get their sense of entitlement to public office, a sense that leads them to defy the spirit of the Constitution by invoking the insufficiency of its letter. What is it that drives people to satisfy vanity or greed even at the cost of destabilizing or bastardizing a democratic order?

One also wonders how our society can promote or institutionalize the virtues of statesmanship in a democracy if leaders themselves defy and dishonor the ideal of equal access to opportunities for public service. Shameless paper in mindless fog

EADLInE writing, especially headline writing at tabloids, is an art. Some of the best headlines to emerge from headline-writing sessions — the ones that pun, make a sly allusion or resonate on a couple of levels — are rejected because they’re too crude, too arcane or just inaccurate.

Few publications write more entertaining headlines than the new york Post, as this 2008 compilation of them attests. Calling bag-carrying bystanders “Bag Men” lives in that tradition. you could regard that headline as inspired if you don’t give a fig about accuracy or about libeling individuals. Evidence that the Post was up to mischief with its headline was detected by Gawker’s Tom Scocca, who noted the tiny, caption-size type on the page that qualified the accusatory headline. It reads, “There is no direct evidence linking them to the crime, but authorities want to identify them.” The Post essentially libels the two guys with big type and takes it back with the small.

(Conclusion) might be places it outside the modern American newspaper tradition and firmly in the British tradition. England is where the Post‘s CEO, rupert Murdoch, helped establish that tradition with his London tabloids The Sun and news of the World, the latter of which he folded in the summer of 2011 after its phone-hacking transgressions were revealed.

The Murdochian tabloid, to give it a more descriptive name, doesn’t care if its readers don’t believe what it publishes. In England, the Murdochian tabloids stir so much BS into print that the Tabloid Watch blog offers almost daily assessments of their fabrications, contradictions and lies. All the tabloid press expects from its readers is their continued patronage, so it doesn’t matter if the readers discount what they read as half true or trumped

up. And readers do discount what they read: In new york, Murdoch’s Post has such a low reputation for accuracy that it scored the lowest credibility rating for newspapers in a 2004 Pace University poll (pdf ).

Although Murdoch ran Murdochian tabloids in Chicago, San Antonio and Boston in addition to new york, his fun-over-facts formula has never really taken root in America, causing his U.S. tabloid portfolio to wither to just the Post long ago. And it’s not like the Post has taken root in new york. It has survived for decades on Murdoch subsidies, which the new york Times recently put at an estimated $110 million a year.

Curiously, the Post’s extreme, almost defiant inaccuracy has united America’s armchair media critics like little else. It can hardly be denied that the racy Post has pointed the way for decades toward an info-entertainment hybrid that many have followed. This week, at least, in its stunning contempt for fact, it has defined the basement into which no media outlet that wants respect wishes to descend.

Two brothers

I

watched with fascination the recent Boston Marathon bombing caper as it unfolded on real time. A good portion of it anyway, losing some sleep in the process. From the twin explosions at the finish line of the race as shown on television over and over again, to the capture of the second suspect (not seen clearly on TV), spiced with the sound and flashes of gunfire in-between, I had my fill of the whole episode.

At one time during the drama, I wondered at the incongruity of it all---close to ten thousand US security forces (policemen,the national Guard,Special Warfare and Tactics (SWAT) personnel, a K-9 unit, etc. in full battle gear, and a police helicopter hovering above arrayed against two bombing suspects, brothers as it turned out--Chechen nationals Tamerlane and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, aged 26 and 19 years, respectively---and presumably armed with hand-guns.

Their bombs had earlier killed three people and injured many dozens more at the finish line and they were later reported to have shot dead a policeman on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus, and wounded another.

Time and again, I would switch from one channel to another and back again to see how various networks were covering the event which gripped millions of viewers all over the world who watched it. I cannot begin to pretend that I understood the whys and wherefores of the whole thing. I even felt a bit sorry for the 19-year old who was caught cowering and bleeding in a tarp-covered boat parked in the backyard of a home owner. I felt at the time, rightly or wrongly, that the younger brother was a victim of circumstances beyond his control and that he idolized his evidently extremely radicalized elder brother and was willing to do his bidding and even follow him to the ends of the earth if need be.

Daray bared that the members can enjoy the following benefits: if they are a member for one month of the SSS, they can avail of funeral claim; if they are a member for three months, they can avail of sickness claim, and if they are a member for 36 months they are allowed disability claim and death pension claim.

Daray said that they will continue to look for ways in order to get the people, especially in region 11, to get secured.

Sex, sabotage and videotape in Malaysian poll campaign M

ALAySIA’S ruling establishment has been accused of resorting to “gutter politics” as a bruising election campaign starts amid outrage over sex videos and opposition charges of sabotage.

The May 5 vote looks to be a typically hardfought and polarising Malaysian election as a 56-year-old regime faces the fight of its life against a rising opposition.

But analysts warn negative tactics in the campaign that officially began on Saturday could backfire on the ruling United Malays national Organisation (UMnO).

Premier najib razak had pledged to oversee a civil election run but advocates for a clean campaign have cried foul over alleged improprieties in what one group has warned will be Malaysia’s “dirtiest election ever”.

A top figure in an opposition Islamic party in the Muslim-majority nation was forced recently to deny involvement over an online video claiming to show him in a tryst with a young woman.

The opposition said more such videos were expected, including one purportedly involving nurul Izzah Anwar, the parliamentarian daughter of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was himself targeted in a 2011 sex video claim.

The affair threw Anwar into the three-party opposition, which he led to its best showing ever in 2008 elections.

Anwar last year was

acquitted in another sodomy case and denies any link to the 2011 video.

“Many in the public do not think that these videos are credible,” Bridget Welsh, a Malaysia politics expert with Singapore Management University wrote in an opinion piece, adding they are “clearly backfiring”.

The opposition was thrown into panic when a government agency on Wednesday refused to recognise the leadership of one of its parties, sowing confusion over whether the party could contest the polls.

After an outcry, the agency reversed its position on Friday but the opposition called it a bid to sow chaos in their campaign.

“If they are prepared to go to this extent, I don’t believe they will stop at this,” said Anwar, who warned of a “tough tumble” for the opposition in the campaign.

Previous elections have been marred by charges of ruling-coalition fraud and vote-buying, and activists warn these polls will be no different. najib’s government insists the vote will be fair, and top officials vow election violence and other violations will be punished.

he Bagobo-Tagabawa, an indigenous peoples community in Sibulan, Davao del Sur, noted an improvement in quality of living since AboitizPower’s wholly-owned subsidiary, hedcor, started operating in their area. The IP group has since benefited from social development projects as well as an annual share in the generation of hedcor’s 42.5 MW Sibulan hydroelectric Power Plant.

Lydia Ang, a community leader in Sibulan recalls the hard living

conditions before the hydropower company developed the Sibulan plants. She describes a community without farm-to-market roads, difficulty of reaching hospitals, limited access to clean water, dilapidated school facilities and lack of educational materials for students and teachers alike.

pled within the hedcor’s 1st year of operations.

As hedcor’s vice president for Business Development Gregorio Jabonillo said, the growth of host communities is inclusive with that of the company’s. host communities, meaning the provinces, municipalities, barangays, and the IP groups, each receive an annual share from the company’s power generation.

This is the third year that communities in Sibulan received their annual generation shares.

According to the police report, “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘Right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am’.”

Sajulga retains Durianman title

EIGnInG champion Felipe Sajulga defended his title in the 2nd Durianman Triathlon crossing the finish six minutes ahead of his closest pursuers in 2 hours and 23 minutes at Villa Josefina, Toril on Sunday.

Sajulga bested a field of more than 130 triathletes from Tagum, Panabo, Mati, general Santos, Bukidnon, South Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Manila and Cebu.

Christoper “Tope” Eyao came in second in 2 hours 29 minutes, followed by another ace triathlete Dexter nonato who came in third in 2 hours 37 minutes.

For the women’s category, former national champion Ani Karina De Leon-Brown came in first in 2 hours 38 minutes, followed by Senator Pia Cayetano who came in second in 3 hours 5 minutes. Marie herrera checked in third in 3 hours 20 minutes.

“She is not that fast in swimming, but she is a very fast cyclist,” race organizer Feline Tadiaman of Triathlon Association of Davao (TriAd) said of the lady senator.

The triathlon, which featured a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicy-

cle, and the 10-kilometer run, was organized by TriAd with the Department of Tourism (DOT) region 11 who co-presented the event for the first time.

Sajulga told Edge Davao after the race that the event is better this year since the course was flatter and the water where they swam is cleaner compared to the waters last year in Queensland Baywalk, Matina. he was grateful to DOT for co-presenting the event, “because they made the event look more festive, especially with the beautiful trophy with a man holding a durian along with a real durian during the awarding ceremony.”

For the women’s category, Brown said she joined the Durianman triathlon since she is from Manila.

She said, “I love the character of the event the trophy and the durian during the awarding ceremony, which gave the eco-sports event a durian flavor.”

“Even the name itself, ‘Durianman’ has great character and this character will definitely be bringing more athletes from out of town,” she said.

This is exactly the aim

of DOT region 11 director Art Boncato who said, “by partnering up with TriAD from the private sector, let us grow the brand since Durianman is a Davao based triathlon.”

“The brand can even go international, in two to three years, we can start inviting foreigners and increase the tourist arrivals here in the city,” he said.

Tadiaman said, “we aim to put Durianman in the Philippine map, when it comes to sports.”

She added that they (TriAD) got the support of DOT just a week before the triathlon and are very thankful to DOT for co-presenting them.

“Finishing the triathlon is already a prize since it can give you the bragging rights, which means it will boost up your confidence,” Tadiaman said.

“Joining a triathlon is a lifestyle that one must be committed to where he or she can develop, discipline and self control.”

“Once you did it, what else can you not do,” said Tadiaman.

The 51.50 Durianman Triathlon is a signature event of Davao City, broke the number of participants last year from 120 to 130.

Dethroned WBO Intercontinental champion rey “Boom Boom” Bautista is not hanging up hs gloves after all.

Bautista, who lost his WBO Intercontinental featherweight title to the rough and rugged Mexican Jose “negro” ramirez on Saturday at the University of Southeastern Philippines gym in Davao City, said

moments after his split decision loss that he is not retiring but instead moving up in weight.

“Panahon na siguro musaka nako ug timbang (I think it’s time to move up in weight),” said Bautista who barely made it to the 126-pound limit in his title defense against ramirez.

Bautista was observed to be wobbly and tense when he tipped the scales a day before

the fight. he heaved a sigh of relief after he was declared 126 and quickly loaded up on a carbo-heavy pasta and boiled eggs.

Some boxing reporters covering the fight said, Bautista is no longer comfortable at th126-lb class. “he’s getting big that’s why he struggled,” a veteran reporter from Cebu City said.

If Bautista moves

up, he will be fighting in the 130-lb junior lightweight division which is loaded with topnotch fighters like WBA champion yuriorkis Gamboa and WBO champion roman Martinez. his manager, Tony Aldeguer of the respected ALA Promotions earlier said after the well-attended fight it was time for Bautista to retire.

The lady senator could have registered a sub-3 hour performance if not taking some minutes away from her time picking up littered plastic along the way. She crossed the finish line holding up the pile of plastic water containers she collected along the race’s route.

Veteran triathlete Ani De Leon, a personal trainer of Cayetano, ruled the women’s race in fast time of 2 hours 38 minutes and 4 seconds.

Cayetano, a staunch advocate of healthy lifestyle and clean environment, also noted the smoke from buses and tricycles along the route during the running phase of the tri-discipline event.

The Durianman is a ‘51.50’ race consisting of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-km bike and

10-km run for a total distance of 51.50 kilometers. however, the lady senator was cordial at the end of the race and still praised the organizers.

“I have been joining local races in the provinces, including marathons, duathlons and triathlons, not only to promote my advocacy for health and fitness, but also to help boost local tourism and encourage local sports organizers,” Cayetano said in a statement sent to EDGE Davao.

She talked to the race organizers shortly after to give her advice on keeping the race environmentally-friendly to which the organizers responded by calling for an immediate clean-up.

Other than the litter of plastic and the smog, Cayetano, who took time out from her busy schedule to join the Davao race said, “I am happy to have placed second in this race, but this to me is just a bonus.
