he planned Davao-General Santos-Bitung roll-on roll-off (R0-R0) service, which is expected to begin in mid-2013, remains uncertain in the absence of a wharf in Davao City capable of catering to such service.

Philexport 11 – Davao is pushing for the Philippine Ports Authority to establish or designate a Ro-Ro port in Davao City to cater to the service, according to Maranon.

A press release from Philexport 11 – Davao states that esporters from Region 11 are called on to be ready and equipped for trade between the region and North Sulawesi, Indonesia through the Davao-General Santos-Bitung roll-on roll-off (R0-R0) service which is anticipated to start middle of this year.

In 2011, Philippine exports to Indonesia amounted to $605,858,000 of top products such as packaging materials, machinery and electronic equipment, dairy products and cereal products, houseware, sugar, rubber and soaping materials, to name a few.

“If the Ro-Ro service pushes through middle of this year, that amount may increase by five to ten percent as trade between Davao City and Indonesia will improve,” according to Maranon’s rough estimate.

The Davao-General Santos-Bitung roll-on roll-off service project was established after a memorandum of cooperation was signed during

the Davao investment Conference held Novermber last year.

It aims to establish a better linkage between ASeAN countries, especially among Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The Super Shuttle RoRo for Davao-Bitung route will operate once a week via its medium size Ro-Ro vessel provider.

According to the press release, the door-to-door cost of the service comes off 20 percent cheaper than conventional shipping, and 70-80 percent cheaper than air travel.

The loading and unloading of goods is also designated to be 2.5 times faster than conventional shipping.

DENR to intensify studies on invasive shrub in South Cotabato watershed T

he Department of environment and Natural Resources (DeNR) in Region 12 is set to launch intensive field studies regarding the proliferation of the invasive shrub buyo-buyo (Piper aduncum) in portions of the critical Allah Valley Watershed Forest Reserve in lake Sebu town in South Cotabato.

Datu Tungko Saikol, DeNR Region 12 executive director, said the initiative is part of the agency’s efforts to control the onslaught of buyo-buyo and other “invasive alien species” (IAS) that pose potential adverse impacts to the environment, especially the forests. he said the watershed area of lake Sebu town was earlier chosen by the DeNR central office as site for pilot study on the control and management of buyobuyo, which was described as a highly aggressive plant that is linked to the degradation of natural forests.

“This (buyo-buyo) has been spreading in some parts of lake Sebu these past years. We will study how we can effectively control their growth and eventually eliminate

them,” he said.

Saikol said the study is a component of a project entitled “Removing Barriers to Invasive Species Management in the Production and Protection Forests in Southeast Asia,” which is funded by the Global environment Fund (GeF) through the United Nations environment Programme (UNeP). he said the DeNR’s Protected Area and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) was designated as the project’s implementing agency.

A project briefer cited that buyo-buyo was not only to the degradation of natural forests but was also found to suppress natural regeneration of forests in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

It was found to have already invaded and colonized vacant agricultural areas, logged-over areas and in gaps within natural forests in the Allah Valley Watershed Forest Reserve.

“It has also invaded banana and cassava plantations and has become a dominant species in regenerating natural forests in the pilot site,” it said.

Saikol said the local implementation of the project “would see

partnerships with local communities in managing the buyo-buyo with techniques in weed management, appropriate biological control, and habitat restoration.” he said they recently held consultations with local officials and

Neri Javier Colmenares said yesterday that Commissioner Sixto Brilliantes has every right to feel dismayed with the Supreme Court as it slapped the CoMeleC with another decision that is contrary to the Commission’s decisions which were done as part of its mandate to administer and oversee the conduct of the elections.

“Commissioner Brilliantes is understandably demoralized after a

string of Supreme Court decisions that went against CoMeleC’s resolutions. The SC decisions are not only against the Commission’s decisions but more importantly, these decisions are remarkably against basic state principles,” he said.

“The first major blow was the Party-list law ruling that made a turnaround against established guidelines and the principle of social justice.

Although we are against or not satisfied with a

number of CoMeleC decisions, the intention to cleanse the party-list is eminent in the Commission’s effort in its recent resolution disqualifying fake party-lists,” Rep. Colmenares said. he had previously expressed that the Supreme Court decision on the party-list is a judicial legislation. “They did not declare that the Party-list law is unconstitutional and yet they reversed the very essence of the party-list system and the

social justice concept.

And with its latest decision, it overstepped a bit too far of its jurisdiction rendering a constitutional commission useless and practically stripping it of its duties and responsibilities. Also, some of the bigger SUCs even have the status of public research universities.

Angara is now working on two fronts to rein in the high college dropout rate. The first is to create the environment for a program called “one college graduate per poor family” to succeed.

The Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, he said, should be reformatted to include a college scholarship for every poor family with a bright kid that cannot go to college because of poverty .

“You tweak the CCT a bit and you can already

expand its programs to include a college scholarship,” he also said.

The second are involves a bill that institutionalizes an expanded Study Now Pay later Plan. one such bill has been filed by Angara in the current Congress but has failed to pass due to time constraints. he said the bill has to be filed anew.

The expanded Study Now Pay later draft law proposes cheap repayment terms for student loans at liberal repayment schedules. An initial P5 billion has been proposed by Angara as the seed fund for the student lending program.

“It puts the candidates in limbo since we don’t know which rule to follow: The old ruling which was per station or the new ruling of the Comelec which is total minutes?” Angara asked.

In a 9-6 vote, SC magistrates issued a status quo ante order against Comelec Resolution Nos. 9615 and 9631 that were handed down in January and February, respectively.

In the resolutions, the Comelec limits national candidates from placing ads that would exceed 120 minutes on all TV networks and 180 minutes on all radio stations.

The same decision also prohibits local candidates from exceeding the 60 and 90 minute limits on ad placements in TV and radio.

In early April, the poll ranked Angara as the 10th biggest spender for TV ads after the several of his political advertisements went on air that ran for a total of 16 min-

utes since February 12.

The new SC decision somehow blurred the boundary separating Team PNoy and the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidates, who crossed coalition lines to air their disappointment on the high Court.

UNA senatorial bet, Zambales Rep. Maria Milagros “Mitos” Magsaysay, questioned the timing of SC decision’s promulgation.

“The imposition of airtime limits on political advertisements brought equality between moneyed and the have nots for those in the senatorial race,” Magsaysay said in a statement.

“Why should the SC change the rules in the middle of the campaign?” she added, explaining this would be very disadvantageous and unfair for those who are running with limited funds.

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro “Teddy” Casiño also assailed the latest Supreme Court ruling, which he noted would favor the wealthy candidates or those backed up by the ruling elite.

The independent candidate also expressed disgust that SC “discarded the tenet of social justice and people empowerment in deciding against Comelec to rein in expensive TV advertisement campaigns.”

cent increase from P77.8 billion recorded in the preceding years.

base as well as by improvements across all key product segments,” said Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, board chair of the Globe Telecom in a report to the Annual Stockholders Meeting held last Tuesday at Fairmont in Makati City.

Ayala disclosed that the company’s mobile revenues, which comprised 81 percent of the total service revenues, also reached a record high of P67.2 billion, a six percent increase from the previous year’s performance.

“This was attributed to the success of the company’s customizable and innovative service offerings for both domestic and international markets, value for money propositions, handset and gadget launches and increased demand for mobile browsing services,” he said.

Globe Telecom’s net income, however, only reached P6.9 billion, a 30 percent decline from 2011.

Ayala said the decrease resulted from the accelerated non-cash deprecia-

tion charges from the decommissioning of assets related to the company’s massive network and IT modernization.

In 2011, Globe Telecom has invested a total of $ 700 M for its network modernization program which is touted as the company’s most significant investment in the last two decades. It includes an all-IP infrastructure, pervasive 3G coverage, doubling fiber optic capacity, 4G and lTe readiness and overall quality and resiliency.

Despite the increase in modernization-related expenses, Ayala said that Globe’s core net income reached P10.3 billion, a two percent increase from the performance exhibited in the preceding year.

Core net income excluded the effects of accelerated depreciation, foreign exchange, market-to-market charges and non-recurring items like the acquisition of new assets, equipment and facilities.

DTI warns consumers anew vs butane canisters filled with LPG T

he Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has warned consumers anew against possible hazards that may be caused by butane canisters filled with liquefied Petroleum Gas (lPG).

Reports have reached DTI that there is a rampant unsafe practice of the use of butane canisters as containers for household lPG. Based on the memorandum issued by DTI-Bureau of Product Standards director lawyer Pedro Vicente C. Mendoza, butane canisters are made of tin and tin canisters are not refillable.

Furthermore, he said, canisters may be filled with products that should be properly identified to comply with Article 77 of the Consumer Act of the Philippines (Republic Act 7394).

Thus, if the canisters contain butane, they should be properly labelled as containing butane.

Phoenix Petroleum, Jr. NBA score 500 in DCWD’s watershed protection project A

total of 500 forest tree seedlings were planted by the Phoenix Petroleum Philippines and players of the Jr. NBA in a tree planting activity conducted last April 3, 2013 inside the Malagos Watershed in Baguio District. The planting was headed by the corporate manager of the Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Beethoven N. Sur and basketball operations director of the NBA Asia, Sefu Bernard.

A total of 40 participants mostly composed of employees of the Petroleum Company and players of the basketball organization went out of their daily routine works and basketball trainings to commune with nature and help in restoring back the watershed in its prime condition.

The presence of large-scale mining and logging operations particularly in our country are proofs. The

natural landscapes are destroyed, many trees are cut down and our lush forests are dying. Not to mention land conversion which transforms our agricultural fields into subdivisions and plantations that alienate the poor people.

As a result, we all have experienced this abnormal changes in our temperature and climate.

Alcantara-owned firm vows to protect Sarangani Bay

T

he Sarangani energy Corporation (SeC), a subsidiary of Alson’s Power Group, assured the public it will not tap water from Sarangani Bay or use the protected seascape as dumping site for its expended water.

This was the assurance made by Nicandro Fucoy, Vice President & Project Implementation head of SeC, during a project briefing held here Tuesday morning.

SeC is the proponent of a 210-megawatt coalfired power plant project in the coastal village of Kamanga, Maasim town, Sarangani Province.

The ground works for the construction of a $450-million power plant project had already kicked off inside the 58-hectare Kamanga Industrial economic Zone.

“The five big banks had already approved our US$220 million (P9.3 billion) loan,” Fucoy added.

The amount will be used to finance the construction of the first 105-megawatt (MW) coalfired power plant, which represents the first phase of the project.

Construction of the second 105-MW power plant is expected to commence within 18 months.

The contract for the construction had been

awarded to a Korean firm, Daelim Industrial Company ltd.

Focuy further confirmed the power plant would go on commercial stream in September 2015.

“For our cooling system, we will not be getting water from Sarangani Bay. Used water will be dumped on our aquaculture pond where we plan to raise cultured tilapia, bangus, etc.,” Focuy said.

Focuy bared that the company would construct deep wells 12 kilometers away from the plant site.

For its deep wells, it will tap water from Siguel river, a potential source of hydro power.

“Aside from our coalfired power plant, we plan to develop hydro power plants in two separate areas, Siguel river (18-MW) and Kalaong river (20MW),” Focus said.

According to him, SeC wants nothing but the best for this power plant project in terms of durability, safety and sustainability.

SeC has already entered into four power sales agreements with South Cotabato electric Cooperative 2 (70-MW), Davao Del Norte electric Cooperative(15-MW), Agusan Del Norte electric Cooperative (10-MW) and Agusan Del Sur electric Cooperative (10-MW). Aquiles Z. Zonio

RIS Aquino, the President’s controversial celebrity sister, is always a publicity magnet. Show business myth had it that when Kris cries on television, she triggers a revolution. She’s a modification of the helen of Troy in some ways that give us the idea of “the tear that launched a thousand cannons.”

What better way for Revenue commissioner Kim henares to hype a tax collection season capitalizing on the sure-fire box office draw of Kris. So last Monday, Kim trumpeted the country’s biggest income taxpayer in Kris.

To the tune of P49.8 million, Kim happily announced that Kris is the top compensation income taxpayer the past tax season, overshadowing the country’s business taipans like henry Sy, lucio Tan and Manny V. Pangilinan, and superathlete Manny Pacquiao.

Kris’ emergence as the top revenue payer made the Sy, country’s richest man, and the rest of the Forbes’ list of billionaires look small-time.

Sy paid only P16.5 million and was ranked a far 15th. If we do the math, that’s not even half of how much Kris paid.

So what’s good for the President’s sister is good for the President. And what’s good for the President and her sister is good for the Commissioner. In terms of publicity stunt,

Kim later explained that there is a difference between compensation income and income derived from assets. That, she said, is the reason why Kris was no. 1 and the tycoons are nowhere near her in tax returns. Then again, what motivated Kim to announce the top 500 list so prematurely without explaining the discrepancy between compensation income and income derived from other sources. Instead, she caused confusion from the taxpaying public.

Again, why make so much fuss about celebrities making it as either a top taxpayer or a notorious deficient taxpayer like the cases of Judie Ann Santos and Solenn huessaff? oh, yes. lest we forget, how else could you get much attention than drumbeat the queen of controversies as the queen of taxpayers?

For obvious reasons, Kim could just be showboating and it’s good for her, for Kris and for the President. Pardon but this latest stunt is cheap.

We’ve seen this lifting-one’s-own-chair antics many times.

heN the State under Bismarck confiscated Church property in Germany during its secularization drive at the end of the 19th century, the State undertook to collect a “Church tax” towards the support of the Church. Today, the Church tax is distributed mainly to the Catholic or lutheran churches, depending on the proportions of the population which declare themselves Catholic or lutheran. The tax income of the churches therefore depends on the number of believers who declare themselves for a particular church.

When I was studying in Germany, I remember feeling very disturbed whenever I would hear of a German “leaving the Church.” A personal protest against the manner in which the Church deals with Catholic relief or with certain theologians thinking “out of the box,” could earn the retaliatory protest declaration of an individual Catholic: “Ich trete aus der Kirche aus.

I am leaving the Church.” I would be shocked whenever I would hear it. how does one who is a Catholic get to heaven if one chooses to leave the Church? Was it not, “outside of the Church there is no salvation”? Was this not one of the major tenets that made the bond of the individual Catholic to the Catholic Church inviolable? If I was born into this Church, am I not to stay here forever? Thinking to leave the Church was simply inconceivable! I didn’t think a policy or political position on any temporal issue could warrant exit by choice from the Church if the cost would be eternal salvation. even in Germany, leaving the Church is serious business, and the local German Church has not been shy about teaching that. on the other hand, I have met a number of Catholics who have “left the Church” for purposes of protest, but who continue to be in active communion with it, i.e., still going to Church regularly and receiving at least some of the sacraments. When I then would then ask them what the meaning of their “leaving the Church” was, they would reply that their leaving the Church deprived the local German Church of their church tax contribution. however large or small this tax was, withdrawing their tax contribution from the local Church was the purpose of their “leaving the Church.” In this case, I can understand how such “leaving the Church” can be compatible with staying in practical communion with it.

When I was in grade school and in high school in the Philippines, on the other hand, my religious education teachers impressed on me indelibly that it was through the Catholic Church that one received salvation. one was grateful for the grace of being part of the Church, and it was inconceivable to want to leave it. We were also taught that it would please God very much if we could lead someone who was out of the Church to baptism. led to salvation through the Catholic Church, that person would be grateful for all eternity – literally.

There was a Chinese lady, Ah Kui, who worked in our household when I was a kid. She worshipped Kuan Yin – the Buddhist goddess of mercy and compassion – and every morning she would pray for some two hours in front of her sacred image. I loved Ah Kui very much. She taught me fundamental disciplines in my life: how to wash dishes and polish floors, to be helpful in our family and parish community, and, by example, to pray. She had her prayer beads and prayer books and Joh stick, but so did I, even if our candles had more flame to them than scent. I think I was around ten years old when I took her aside for a very serious conversation. I told her she had to be a Catholic – so that she would not go to hell or live forever in purgatory, missing out for all eternity on heaven. She smiled, grateful for my concern.

But she replied, “Joe, you have your God. I have my God. In the end: the same God.” her reply went against all the good sisters were telling us in school. But she said so with such conviction and love, there was no way I could contradict her.

The voter’s intent is quite basic. All they want in the future is a clean and honest government administered by young, fresh and talented leaders, not old, unreliable and “recycled” politicians.

The ongoing political campaign actually is humiliating instead of stimulating.

And it is so degrading for the electorate to know that most of those involved in the campaign are not prepared to discuss serious issues and other pressing concerns. Whether aspiring for lower or higher elective posts, candidates ought to have an understanding of state politics – what the state is, what the society is, what government is all about, what their duties to nation are, and what the rights of the people are. of even greater concern is whether candidates, national or local alike who have different political inclinations are qualified to assume public office. one would readily notice that intelligent debates and logical discussions seem rare certainly because Filipino voters, indeed, lap up election politics as much for the candidates’ popularity and entertainment value. The result is that we have a population, even by their mistaken notion, complained of years of bad government. Yet they repeat the mistake by electing candidates who are in no position to give good and reliable government, simply because they don’t have enough understanding.

The “real tragedy” of the country, a renowned political analyst once said, “is that the Philippines is an impoverished country continuously ruled and dominated by the so-called “trapos” or traditional politicians that belong to political dynasties. The few dominant and elite families swarmed with politicians are now called by their new moniker – “recycled politicos” or “repos.” Disillusioned by the current political system, yet leaders were unable to change it, and discouraged by their future, yet unable to escape it, the people have been futile and embittered for so many years. But as long as the “trapos and repos” keep holding and hanging on to power like hungry leeches, the country’s long-standing social and political stalemate between its people and their “recycled” leaders may never be settled.

The people’s frustration has often erupted into rage. The reason for their dissatisfaction is simple. They realized that under the present political structure the candidates with value and reputation sink to the bottom while the worthless and members of political dynasties rise to the top. The unknown but decent ones have no chance of being elected into public office. The prevailing disappointing situation is by no means a voter’s dilemma. except for the “recycled” candidates, perhaps the best thing that can be said of the coming midterm polls is that voters at least do have choices – young and fresh aspirants with potential talent, which is more in number than those seeking to perpetuate themselves in power.

The voter’s problem, however, don’t just end there. Politics in a Philippine setting is almost a game played by the moneyed and the powerful through dubious means if only to ensure or wish to prolong their say in public office. There are encouraging and beautiful speeches from the candidates during their campaign sorties, however, in the end, it all boils down to how efficiently and effectively they allocate resources to the people and build social trust in the event they will successfully make it.

Voters therefore ought to choose leaders who can engender social trust because elected officials who can marshal support from the masses can propagate that kind of trust so essential to our political system and to our remaining as a strong nation. But unless voters’ change their bad habits of committing the same mistake during elections by electing unworthy and undesirable candidates, we do not see great changes in the future.

Aboitiz Foundation extends P27.6M in microfinance loans to cooperatives

BoITIZ Foundation, Inc., the social development arm of the Aboitiz Group, extended microfinance loans worth Php28 million in 2012 to various cooperatives in Cebu, Benguet and Davao, allowing more than 1,200 individuals to benefit from sustainable livelihood projects that were implemented in these areas.

A total of 73 microfinance loans were granted to selected organizations under Aboitiz Foundation’s ABAG (Aboitiz Business Assistance and Guidance), a project under its enterprise development component.

For more than 20 years now, Aboitiz Foundation has been assisting different organizations nationwide to earn additional income, providing access to various income-generating livelihood activities and job opportunities and empowering them to become entrepreneurs in

their respective businesses. During this 20-year period, a total of 381 loan packages worth Php102 million were approved for 16,240 beneficiaries.

Supplementing these loan packages were capability-building and livelihood skills training programs that the foundation conducted to ensure that these livelihood projects become self-sustaining. “our 20 years of existence was able to empower the less privileged individual, who eventually became the catalyst in transforming the lives in their communities. We believe that we have added worth and significance in what we do,” said Aboitiz Foundation executive Vice President Sonny Carpio. “our initiatives in microfinance, capability-building and livelihood skills training help mold, empower and transform these individuals to become better citizens.”

General food distribution for ‘Pablo’ victims extended

T

he Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other international and national humanitarian organizations have decided to extend the relief operations for typhoon Pablo victims until June 30 this year.

In a meeting held at the Grand Regal hotel on April 6, the provincial local governments of Compostela Valley and Davao oriental revealed that relief assistance is still needed by those affected.

“Governor Uy and I share the same thought… we are still hoping that [the Department] would extend the food and cash assistance until June,” Davao oriental Corazon N. Malanyaon said.

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman said, “At some point, we cannot continue providing for the 200,000 plus families. What we will do is identify the families with senior citizens, persons with disabilities, chronically-ill persons, pregnant and lactating women, and child-headed households.”

“Right now it is being referred as unconditional food and cash assistance, which really means we will continue providing the food packs,” the Secre-

Rory Villaluna of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICeF) also proposed for the inclusion of malnourished children in the unconditional food and cash assistance.

“Concern has been raised that the malnutrition rates is getting higher at this time. UNICeF is creating awareness because we still need support along these lines.

We were thinking that until there is a time when families have sustainable livelihoods that will actually ensure that they can afford to buy food or produce food from gardening then there is still some subsidies that have to be provided,” Villaluna said.

Secretary Soliman assures the continuous delivery of the much-needed services, especially to the identified vulnerable groups.

“The commitment of the President is to continue to provide with whatever is needed at the early recovery stage,” she added.

ASEAN Summit won’t discuss Sabah crisis T

he Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday said the Sabah standoff will not be discussed in the coming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASeAN) meeting to be held April 24-25 in Brunei Darussalam.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary and Spokesman Raul hernandez also said President Benigno Aquino will not have any bilateral meeting due to time constraints.

“The President will have no bilateral meetings during the summit.

It’s because of the short period of this summit.

People are busy and this is actually a very short summit and not like the one that we had last November,” said hernandez

Meeting up for dinner at the Mango Tree I love Thai cuisine. I love how all the flavours that tickle the palate are layered on each other much like a beautiful watercolour painting. Unfortunately, most of the time, when Thai cuisine meets Pinoy chefs, things tend to become unbalanced and become sweet instead and the flavours become muddied and lost. That is why great Thai restaurants are few and far in between in the Philippines.

So imagine my surprise to have college friend Karen T. sending me a PM over Facebook scolding me for not visiting her baby, Mango Tree at Bonifacio High Street, during one of my recent visits to the Metro. Unfortunately at that time I was so busy and did not have time to drop by, good thing I was scheduled to be back the following month and after a quick few exchange of messages a date was set.

So the date came and just a quick short stroll from the nearby Seda Hotel, I was finally at the Mango Tree ready for some good eats as Karen promised me.

The Mango Tree is an authentic Thai restaurant and is a franchise of the original Mango Tree restaurant of Thailand.

The restaurant’s modern and stylish interiors lend a sophisticated feel with touches of Thai design to accentuate the space.

Not typically found in ordinary Thai restaurants, the Miang Kham was a delicious starter that is sweet, nutty, salty, sour and spicy at the same time. The betel nut leaf used to wrap and hold everything together give a slight bitter taste that enhances ones appetite.

Mike and Xochi finally arrived after a couple of minutes and we started ordering our entrees.

Karen and I, being more adventurous, went for Kae Yang, delicious chargrilled lamb chops marinated in Thai herbs and served with a flavourful dipping sauce. Mike and Xochi on the other hand went with more familiar Thai dishes like the Pad

Thai and Pineapple Fried Rice.

The lamb chops were fatty and perfectly cooked with the char from the grill and the dipping sauce adding a unique flavour to the meat. Mango Tree’s Pad Thai was in a league of its own, from presentation all the way to the generous amount of shrimp in the dish. The same goes with the Pineapple Fried Rice which had a subtle smoky wok taste that can only be created by skilled wok chefs. And skilled chefs they are, as Karen told me that the chefs at Mango Tree are Thai and were flown especially to keep the consistency and authenticity of the dishes being served.

So as we caught up with each other’s lives while dining at what has to be one of Metro Manilla best new restaurants, it was nice to be able to experience the magic at Mango Tree.

CEB now flies from Cebu to the island of Camiguin

The Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) launched the first direct flights to the island of Camiguin last April 15, 2013.

The thrice weekly service from Cebu utilizes an ATr 72500. The Monday, Wednesday, Friday service departs Cebu at 6:45am and arrives in Camiguin at 7:25am. The return flight will depart Camiguin at 7:45am and arrive in Cebu at 8:25am. Lowest year-round fares to Camiguin start at P588.

CEB representatives along with Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority General Manager Nigel Villarete and DOT region 10 Director Catalino Chan sent off the maiden flight passengers from Cebu, while Camiguin Governor Jurdin Jesus romualdo, Mambajao Vice Mayor James Ederango and DOT region 10 Director Catalino Chan were present when CEB launched the service in Camiguin.

During his speech at the Camiguin Airport launch event, CEB VP for Airport Services Antonio Jose rodriguez said, “Before, tourists used to travel to Cagayan de Oro and take a 3 to 5 hour ferry and bus ride to the island. Now, Camiguin is just a 40 minute flight away.”

“With this new route, Cebu Pacific opens the island of Camiguin to even more foreign and local tourists, by offering a direct service and the lowest fare option to leisure travelers. We hope that establishments in Camiguin are ready for the many foreign and local tourists we foresee we will fly to this island,” he added.

Beefy fuel for the body SPeNdINg my days with my nephews, datu Rashid and datu Norms (miss you datu Hassan), has always been full of surprises. Recently, they opted to take a detour and spend some days in the Metro. Let me tell you, I was all hyped up and at the same time, dead tired every time I am with them. But, at the end of the day, I am all pumped up because of their kakulitans.

In between the chase and the boisterous laughter and voices inside the mall, we do what we do best – we eAT! Yes, we are a bunch of eating machines; always on the hunt for the best food in town.

That’s why I love it when my family are here (parinig!)

On my end, I made my way to the supermarket and opted to cook something while they were here. To make the long story short, I decided to whip up some beef dishes to keep us all beefed up when chasing the kids around! Hope you like them as much they did.

Sautéed Beef Strips in Oyster Sauce, Garlic and Onion Beef Bacon is definitely the next best thing! Aside from the usual crispy and greasy bacon, experiment and have yourself something to munch on.

Remember, your imagination is your limitation!

Ingredients: 6 strips store bought Beef Bacon, roughly chopped 1 medium size white onion, chopped 2 pieces garlic, minced 3 tablespoon oyster sauce 1 tablespoon raw sugar 1 tablespoon lemon zest

cooked. Add liquids and cook accordingly. Add water and reduce.

Serve immediately over hot rice or as it is.

Juice of half a lemon Salt Freshly ground Black Pepper Water extra Virgin Olive Oil Procedure: In a bowl, mix lemon zest, lemon juice, oyster sauce, olive oil and sugar.

Mix well. Adjust according to taste.

In a pan over low heat, sauté onion until translucent. Let the juices from the onion flow and slightly caramelize such. Add garlic and cook accordingly. do not burn. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Stir well.

One Pot Braised Beef ever wondered if you can pull off a one-pot dish in a few? Well, fear not as I have the right dish for you.

Brace yourself though; you’ll be whipping batches another after this.

Ingredients: 500 grams beef chunks, trimmed 1 cup oyster sauce 8 pieces garlic, minced 5 tablespoon raw sugar, packed 1 piece carrot, chunks 1 cup pineapple juice, unsweetened 3 tablespoon garlic powder ½ cup chives, chopped Sesame oil Method: In a bowl, mix oyster sauce, pineapple juice, sugar, garlic powder and garlic. Mix until powder ingredients are completely

dissolved. Set aside.

In zipped bag, pour marinade and add your beef chunks. Lock, shake and rub profusely. This will ensure that the liquids seep into the meat and tenderizes such. Refrigerate. Let stand for two hours to overnight.

In a deep pan over low heat, pour contents of the bag – meat and marinade—and the rest of the ingredients. Cook for a full hour and a half or until meat is tender to the touch or falls off the fork. By simmering, you are sure to have a taste of every bit of the flavors infused in the meat and at the same time, your vegetables will be cooked accordingly.

Once done, add sesame oil and mix. Add the oil at the very end as cooking the oil longer than usual will result to a burnt taste.

Turn off heat.

Serve over rice with chiffoned chives. Serve hot!

ThE Boston Marathon tragedy—in which a pair of deadly explosions rocked the finish line, killing two people and injuring 23— has shaken many, including those who hold the city close to their heart.

Ben Affleck, who grew up in the area and has made the city the setting for his films The Town and Gone Baby Gone, responded to the events on Facebook, saying, “Such a senseless and tragic day.

My family and I send our love to our beloved and resilient Boston.”

And the Oscar winner was just one of many celebs with ties to the city that reacted to the heartbreaking disaster that occurred this afternoon.

oS ANGeleS (AP) -Caron Butler scored 18 of his 22 points in the third quarter, and the los Angeles Clippers routed the Portland Trail Blazers 93-77 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.

Blake Griffin added 16 points, DeAndre Jordan had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Chris Paul had 11 assists for the Pacific Division champions, who finished their home schedule with a 32-9 record. They end the regular season on Wednesday at Sacramento, and another win would ensure the Clippers have home-court advantage to start the playoffs.

Will Barton scored 17 points and Joel Freeland added 13 points for the Blazers, who never led while losing their 12th in a row.

The Clippers were dominant in the paint (4630) and on the boards (5133) while wrapping up the season series 3-1.

They certainly didn’t use up any energy Tuesday night.

DeMar DeRozan scored 30 points, Rudy Gay added 22 and the Toronto Raptors ran all over the playoff-bound hawks, 113-96.

The Raptors made two-thirds of their shots in the first half, sprinting to a 68-51 lead as DeRozan scored 19 points and Gay chipped in with 17. Atlanta went mostly with backups, showing no sense of urgency to claim the No. 5 seed in the eastern Conference. ‘’I’m going to err on the side of caution,’’ hawks coach larry Drew said.

Atlanta fell into a tie with Chicago for the fifth spot. The teams finish the regular season on Wednes-

Kyle Korver led the hawks with 13 points, extending his 3-point streak to 73 consecutive games.

AN ANToNIo (AP) -- The San Antonio Spurs have signed veteran forward Tracy McGrady, adding depth and experience as the playoffs arrive.

The 33-year-old McGrady is a seven-time NBA All-Star drafted ninth overall in 1997. In 938 career NBA games, McGrady has averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.21 steals per game.

In 44 playoff games, he

has averaged 25.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.16 steals. he has played for Toronto, orlando, houston, the New York Knicks, Detroit and Atlanta in his career. he most recently played for Qingdao of the Chinese Basketball league, averaging 25 points and 7.2 rebounds in 29 games.

said they signed a contract for a 126-pound limit against Filipino WBo international featherweight champion Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista.
