Pursuant to this advocacy, Ambassador Club Davao (ACD), one of the local affiliates of IAC, extended material and cash assistance to hundreds of pre-school children in Yolanda-ravaged Tacloban City, Palo and Tanauan towns in Leyte benefited from material and cash assitanve on January 30 and 31.

Ambassador Club Davao is currently presided by lawyer Isaac “Dodong” G. Robillo Jr., retired judge of the Regional Trial Court in Davao. Ambassador Dodong headed the January 30-31 mission to Tacloban which distributed backpacks loaded with school supplies, slippers and snacks to 240 children

attending five daycare centers destroyed by the monster typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan).

The Davao ambassadors also gave a total cash assistance of P200,000 to three daycare centers in Tanauan, and one in Palo at P50,000 each center observed to have been partially destroyed or totally flattened by the supper typhoon which struck Leyte, Samar and several other provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao in the morning of November 8, last year.

More than 40 preschool kids in barangay Cogon, Palo were also given school bags, although they were not in the Ambassador Club’s original list of daycare centers to be assisted in Palo.

Cogon barangay captain Malvarosa Perote was profuse with thanks. She said 154 Cogon inhabitants perished during Yolanda, including the one whose cadaver was discovered only that day. Sixty of those who drowned were children.

“All of us in the neighborhood just stayed inside our homes during the typhoon,” Mrs. Perote said.

“When it was over and we went out, we were horrified to see the big number

of dead neighbors strewn all over.”

“If only the authorities said it was like tidal wave or tsunami, not just sea surge, which nobody understood, people should have been scared enough to evacuate to safer grounds, thereby reducing the number of fatalities,” Perote said, adding that a cousin of her husband, the wife, son and mother-in-law were among those who died in the typhoon.

Malvarosa had another shocker coming – she later learned that the 37-year old engineer who became barangay captain on October 28 was one of those who drowned, prompting her to assume the continuing heavy responsibility of leading her devastated barangay rise from the ruins.

ported that ambassadors responded overwhelmingly with their donations to the online fund campaign after viewing television news accounts of the Yolanda devastation.

No less than ACI world president Dr. Phil Michael Moerchel, a journalist from Bonn, Germany, made a personal appeal for donations.

Joining Robillo and Nimmo in Leyte last week were Dr. Roy B. Ferrer, former Davao City vice mayor Luis C. Bonguyan and lawyer Leoncio P. Villa-Abrille, all of whom served as Davao and national presidents of Ambassador Club, the couple physicians Anthony and Jeanette Ybiernas and this reporter, ACD immediate past president.

While in Tanauan, the group was billeted in the Welcome Home Pensione, the inn where President Noynoy Aquino stayed

for two nights after the typhoon and secretaries Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government and Voltaire Gazmin of the Department of National Defense for two weeks.

The club will send another delegation to Leyte in two to three months to assess the progress of the repairs of the daycare centers and determine how much more the group needs to donate, Ambassador Robillo said.

Earlier in 2013, under the watch of this writer, the Davao-based club and the Ambassador Club Philippines led by Dr. Ferrer made similar missions to the cities of Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete which were ravaged by typhoon Sendong.

While in Leyte, the group also took occasion in visiting the monument of the Palo Leyte landing of General Douglas McArthur which was also partly damaged by Yolanda, the

San Juanico Bridge, the country’s longest span, and the ship which was washed ashore by the storm surge.

HE Davao City government has ordered the creation of a management board which will oversee the implementation of memorandum of agreement between the city government and a private group on the rehabilitation of the Ma-a slaughterhouse.

Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has signed Executive Order (EO) No. 8 or “An Order Constituting The ‘Ma-A Slaughterhouse Management Board (MSM)’ as Oversight Body in the

Implementation of the Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) Executed by and Between the City of Davao and Bankerohan Livestock Dealer’s Cooperative for the Rehabilitation and Operation of Ma-A Slaughterhouse, Through Public-Private Partnership, Prescribing it’s Duties and Functions, and For Other Purposes.”

The EO states that the issuance aims to implement the partnership ‘efficiently and effectively’ as there is

a need to facilitate the coordination, monitoring and implementation.

In section one of the EO, the board shall be composed of the mayor or his representative as the chairman, the president of Bankerohan Livestock Dealer’s Cooperative as the vice-chairman. The members are the heads of City Administrator’s Office, City Treasurer’s Office, City Economic Enterprise, City Veterenarian’s Office, City Health Office, City En-

gineer’s Office, City Legal Office and two representatives from the private partner.

The second section of the EO states that the board will formulate and adopt policy guidelines and standards in the administration and operation of the slaughterhouse within the framework of the MOA. The board should be “consistent with the provisions of the MOA and, existing laws and ordinances, to

HE City prosecution office has charged a lady driver with homicide through reckless imprudence after she bumped a public utility jeepney that resulted in the death of a passenger last January 31.

Charged by prosecutor Victor Sepulveda is one Analie Te, based on the complaint filed by Alfredo Julian, husband of Delia Julian, who was killed in the accident.

Sepulveda recommended P10,000 bail for the liberty of the suspect who is detained at the Buhangin police station.

Te was driving her vehicle along Buhangin road and bumped the jeepney that caused one of the passengers, Delia, to fall off the vehicle and was run over. .

The penalty is from 4 months to 4 years, 2 months imprisonment.

Reform Davao’s transport system

HE transportation system in Davao City needs to be reformed.

This was the initial finding of the study conducted

by Asia Halcrow Inc. last year which was commissioned by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Department of Transportation and Communication.

Based on the report of Committee on Transportation and Communication of the 17th city council headed by councilor Leonardo Avila III, the factors behind the need for reform the transportation system are rapid population growth, inadequate network coverage of public transportation, volume of vehicles in the city, complex route network and highly-fragmented transport operations and industry’ and weak planning and regulatory framework.

The report said that the city has a population growth of about seven to eight percent every year and in 2007, it has an estimated population of about 1.36 million.

“By 2010, the population had grown by 8 percent to 1.47 million, which further increased to 1.58 million by 2013, registering an increase of 7 percent” stated the report, adding that the city’s population is expected to grow to 1.69 million by 2016 and by 2019; it is projected to further increase to 1.82 million with the estimate above.

There is also an inadequate network coverage in the city as. 20 barangays have no service ‘at all’ while 31 barangays have poor service.

“All in all, these 51 barangays represent 412,000 residents or one-third (1/3) of the total population of planned urbanized area” stated the report adding that there are also too many small public transport vehicles in other areas.

The large number of vehicles makes it difficult to regulate and manage, and itself is often the case of traffic congestion. It is stated that there are 13,985 public transport vehicles; 22 percent of these are tricycles which are regulated by the city government while the remaining 78 percent such as Jeepney/Filcab and taxis are by regulated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“It is aggravated by the inappropriate and inefficient use of vehicles to carry passengers” the report says.

It is stated in the report that the study noted that in Libby Road (near Toril), there were 400 passengers during a peak hour going

towards the same direction on board 130 motorizsed tricycles (approx. 1 every 30 seconds). Then, at the Bankerohan Bridge, there wereb7,850 passengers/ peak hour/direction on board 690 Jeepneys and Filcabs (approx. 1 every 5 seconds).

The city has 7,278 Jeepney/Filcab units covering 6,724 franchises plying 131 routes. There are 51 routes with less than 15 units; and 21 routes with more than 100 units.

“The Sasa -JP Laurel has the highest units at 431” the report stated.

The Halcrow team noted on their study, the lack of a cooperative working, leading to unreliable service; competition for passengers on the street; and the mentality of the drivers/operators that public transport is their source of their “livelihood” and not on public service.

The study pointed out on the committee report that planning on transport is seen only as a national responsibility and the responsibility is spread across several agencies thus resulting to a lack of coordination.

“The planning on transport, while seen as a government responsibility, is inappropriate and relevant agencies are not resourced to undertake the work.

Similarly, at the city level, no single office is responsible” stated on the committee report.

The enforcement is also more on traffic management rather than public transport operations.

The study stated on the report that to address this

problem the city should adopt a sustainable Transport strategy that allows more flexible strategies rather than fixed plans.

“Such strategy shall have operating characteristics that include route network, network coverage, service level, vehicle types, and supporting infrastructure” the report said.

The report said that leadership and involvement must also be proactive in all aspects, from policy to network planning and management to operations.

A highly-prioritized bus system shall also be explored including other transport systems such as conventional bus.

“But given the city’s existing road profile/situation and the indicative cost, the highly-prioritized bus system is the best option for Davao City.”

But before the city will proceed on this system, the report said is should address the social impacts on transport users such as attending to the special considerations on the transport requirements of vulnerable members of

society ( women and children, senior citizens, persons with disability, access modes, infrastructure design and design of public transport vehicles).

Then the impact on the transport providers (drivers and operators) must also be looked into such as the redeployment to other parts of the city’s transport sector; associated training and re-training; assistance to find jobs in other sectors; business support advice programs for those whose businesses are affected, but will still

continue to operate.

“As a last resort, financial compensation packages to those whose livelihood or businesses cannot be sustained by other means” the report stated.

Last week, after a heated discussion on this matter, the council approved the resolution to request DOTC and the ADB to continue their study and look into the financial and social impact viability of the recommended reforms of the study including the most appropriate mass transit system for the city.

More than 1,000 relief packs were distributed by power barge operator Therma Marine to more than 1,000 families displaced by typhoon Agaton in Agusan del Norte provinces. The relief effort was made in response to calls by Gov. Maria Angelica Amante-Matba of Agusan del Norte as well as Nasipit Mayor Enrico Corvera and Nasipit Vice Mayor Dick Carmona. The distribution of the packs were held in affected towns of Naspiti, Magallanes and Jabonga in Agusan del Norte. Therma Marine, a subsidiary of AboitizPower, operates one of its two 100-MW oil-fired power barges in the municipality of Nasipit. It supplies peaking power to more than 20 electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in Mindanao.

‘We are not ready free trade’

HE PHILIPPINE government is not creating a healthy business environment that will promote inclusive growth for the 2015 Asean integration, a business leader said.

Riocardo R. Bioco, president of the Bukidnon Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., (BCCII) said during the consultative dialogue on the amendment of the R.A. 9136, otherwise known as the Energy Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA) that the government is not creating an environment that will enable them to survive the free trade among countries.

“Like VAT, we have ASEAN integration and our province Bukidnon, is very vulnerable because some of the sensitive commodities like sugar will be fully liberalized, meaning they can come in at 5 percent tariff and no need for so much import permit.”

“There’s not much restriction in importing kasi that’s the essence of free trade and yet we are compelled to compete against this imported commodities and yet cost structure is very different from us, “he said.

“We have much a bigger issue which is survival and the government

is not creating that environment for us to survive,” Bioco said. He admitted that as president of the chamber, it is his responsibility to study on the implication of laws.

“So that’s why we are asking the government to rethink, EPIRA is just a small part of this issue.

So we are talking about survival here, EPIRA is just one factor,” he said.

WPF reported installation of 205 AWS in all cities and provincial capitols of the League of Cities of the Philippines and League of Provinces of the Philippines last year.

The roll-out of another 197 AWS were made possible by private donors and site partners

Skylanders claims a trio of sales records

HE Skylanders are quickly becoming one of Activision’s most valuable franchises.

As part of its earnings call yesterday, Activision noted that the franchise has crossed $2 billion in worldwide sales - a mark no series put out by an independent publisher has ever hit that quickly. But that was just the first of the records.

Eric Hirshberg, president and chief executive officer of Activision Publishing, says further checking by the company shows that only one title, in fact, has ever hit the $2 billion mark quicker: Nintendo’s Wii Fit. And, as if that weren’t enough, he adds, if you took the video game out of the equation and looked solely at the sales of Skylander’s toys in the action figure category, it would be not only the biggest in the world - but its sales would eclipse the current number one and three action lines combined.

So, with a feat like that (not to mention massive internal competition for consumers’ at-

tention this year), how does the company top itself in 2014?

“The biggest competition for Skylanders is Skylanders,” Hirschberg tells Plugged In. “I know that sounds like a boxed answer, but we have got to continue to make

people’s eyes pop our of their heads.”

Historically, we wouldn’t have to wait long to hear how Activision plans to do that.

Toy Fair has generally been the time Activision begins to crank up its Skylanders market-

ing machine. This year, though, it has decided to hold its cards close to its vest a bit longer.

Developer Toys For Bob, which created the series, is overseeing the latest installment. And while he’s not giving details, Hirschberg says

fans can expect more than an incremental change this year.

“We want to reinvigorate the franchise each and every time,” he says. “To me, that is how you continue to build success. Our strategy is pretty simple. We feel

like we’ve gotten to this level of success by delivering breakthrough innovation that’s captivating to our young fans. ...And I can assure what you’re going to see is going to be another leap forward.”

Skylanders faced its first real competition in 2013 with Disney Infinity, which has sold 3 million starter packs since its release. And while Hirschberg won’t address the game directly, he points again to the numbers to indicate the impact on Skylanders was minimal.

“Competition is nothing new for us,” he says. “The anomaly was we didn’t have it briefly with Skylanders because we invented the category. What I would say in terms of impact for us is we grew our business in 2013 despite the fact that there was a console transition and competition this time. ... So that makes me bullish.”

If yesterday’s earnings call showed anything, it’s Activision’s suffering from an embarrassment of riches these days.

AVAO City’s public transport system needs reforms.

It’s clear from the initial findings of the study conducted by Asia Halcrow Inc. last year as commissioned by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Department of Transportation and Communication that there is inadequate network coverage of public transportation, there is an increasing volume of vehicles in the city, the route network is complicated and the transport operations are highly-fragmented.

Add to that, the industry’s weak planning and regulatory framework.

The report said that the city has a population growth of about seven to eight percent every year and in 2007, it has an estimated population of about 1.36 million.

The inadequacy of the network coverage in the city is reflected by 20 barangays which are classified as having no transport service “at all” while 31 barangays have poor service.

Other findings make it more alarming. The large number of vehicles makes it difficult to regulate and manage, and is often the cause of traffic congestion.

For the record, there are 13,985 public transport vehicles; 22 percent of these are tricycles which are regulated by the city government while the remaining 78 percent are Jeepney/Filcab and taxis which are regulated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

The Halcrow team also noted the stiff competition among transport operators and the lack of discipline of drivers.

Where does it lead us now? We need to change the system from the jeepney transport to bus system.

We also need to invest in transport infrastructures.

We understand the complexity of this problem.

The solution is not going to happen overnight. Metro Manila is currently investing on a three-year public transport upgrade to solve its traffic problems.

Davao City should have the same foresight.

War vs Panama wilt now in Davao!

T’S A KIND of disease that attacks a banana plantation silently, but with a devastating effect like a super typhoon.

This one comes from the soil and turns the green banana leaves to bright yellow before it slowly turns to brown ---- and die.

As far as I can remember, when I was still working with a banana export company in the 70’s, this banana disease called “Panama wilt” has been attacking banana plantations all over the world since the early 60’s along with another disease called “Moko”.

Banana plantations in the Philippines had been contaminated with this disease many times over the years mainly because we’ve never heard of the word “organic” and fruit growers and farmers had always been using chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides.

I remember it was sometime in the late 70”s when an American banana researcher told me that the “overuse” of chemical fertilizers and pesticides over and over for several decades in the banana industry, “killed” all the nutrients of the soil in banana farms.

Without the nutrients deep in the soil, the roots of banana plants can no longer feed the rest of the plant leaving it to die---starting with the yellowing of the banana

leaves.

This is a GLOBAL problem that had been devastating banana plantations in Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and other countries in Central and South America.

Today, this disease had been attacking plantations in Africa, Australia, Mexico, India, etc that it has become a “global war” against Panama wilt.

Billions of dollars had been invested by chemical companies to supply all the fertilizers and pesticides of the world’s banana industries the past decades to make sure they all produce high quality bananas for export to the world’s banana markets.

Netherlands had been at the forefront of this “global war”, that’s why they’re joining hands here with scientists from UP Mindanao and invited Davao banana growers and farmers for an “International Workshop on Panama Disease : Finding Solutions to a Global Problem” at the Marco Polo Hotel sometime this week.

One question they might discuss this week is : are all banana companies worldwide, “overusing” chemical fertilizers and pesticides which are blamed for killing all the nutrients of the soil ?

Maybe, just maybe, there might be some Davao banana growers who might have found some solutions to fight this plant disease and willing to share with foreign scientists coming over here with Dutch researchers from Netherlands-based Wageningen University.

One grower and exporter, Koronado Apuzen, chief executive officer of Organic Producers and Exporters Corporation, (the trading arm of Farmcoop, an NGO helping agrarian reform banana farmers) is expected to bring the foreign scientists, together with UP researchers to some experimental farms in Davao del Norte sometime this week.

Also expected to report on their own findings are researchers from UP, USEP and SPAMAST (we can’t spell this out because its too hard to remember).

Of course, government researchers from the DA will be there to give some inputs, but we won’t hold our breath on this.

It is most disturbing that the taxpaying public can no longer rely on the police for safety and protection. Some police officers have turned out to be the aggressor and tormentor instead of being the defender of the oppressed. The PNP leadership should move quickly to cleanse the tarnished image and reputation of the organization, – it is facing a serious credibility problem. All this is desired because disregarding reforms will only result in a backlash of resentment and anger from ordinary citizens.

As a matter of principle it’s only the application of common intellect in the small details of police procedures on how to totally cleanse the police ranks of its “poison and toxins.” Indeed, there are the utmost need for an initiative aimed at re-

storing the shattered integrity of the police organization. The starting point must be for our top leaders, President Benigno Aquino III above all, to stop the shenanigans of scalawag cops, put them behind bars and file appropriate charges if they are found guilty of grave offenses.

Police brutality and human rights violations likewise must be stopped and respect for the constitutional rights of citizen must be applied.

Personnel training and retraining and a refresher transformation course specifically for police officers with pending minor violations.

The majority of our people cannot differentiate anymore the honest and trustworthy policeman from a shady and rogue cop. The PNP leadership must move now.

Top officials, lawmakers and the police hierarchy must take cognizance of this, and what it must also do is not dawdle in their decisions.

The rule of law must be applied equitably to all.

To attain this objective the country’s police force needs crucial reforms and, the skeptical public needs them to be sensible, and the sternness possible to meet the people’s expectations.

Perturbing credibility problem

EFORMS IN THE PNP – Radical change and drastic reform are long overdue in the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Police officers must have respect for human rights, always observing the rule of law, transparency and accountability. Many scalawags in the PNP are in cahoots with underworld characters and have been engaged in highly lucrative but illegal activities such as kidnap-for-ransom, carjacking, gun-for-hire operations, drug trafficking and protection racket. There’s so much dishonesty, corruption and bribery in the force. What’s scary is that some scoundrels in uniform are well-organized, armed with sophisticated and high-powered weapons, equipped with modern communications and ready anytime to shoot it out with law enforcers and civilians agents.

Upon his assumption as the country’s PNP chief, Director General Alan Purisima promised to continue the upright work of his predecessor and most importantly purge the police ranks of “rotten tomatoes.” Well said sir, but after almost two years at the helm your leadership is still being challenged by the

VEN more, what financial markets miss, in addition to the factors above, is that this year will see a massive democratic surge around the world. In fact, in a span of several months more people than ever before will go to the polls. In part, that is a natural consequence of more people living on the planet than any other time in history, but between now and this fall, massive democracies will elect parliaments, congresses and presidents.

Many of those countries, in fact, are the ones currently experiencing financial market volatility. Turkey, which has seen a run on the lira and then aggressive action by the Turkish central bank to raise interest rates, will have an election in August to determine the fate of the embattled prime minister, Recip Erdogan, and his Islamist party. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim democracy with more than 250 million people, will chose a new president and parliament over the summer. In October, more than a hundred million Brazilian voters will decide whether Dilma Roussef has earned another term in the midst of questionable economic growth and after hosting the World Cup. And in May, India — the world’s largest democracy — will elect a new government and see whether it can at last break the political knot that has constrained its economic potential.

The sheer volume of this democratic activity is unusual, and combined with the inevitably partisan midterm elections in the United States in November, it is a recipe for some volatility. Democracy, as we all know, is messy, noisy, chaotic, often bitter and frequently inconclusive. It is a perfect recipe for the kind of uncertainty that financial market participants frequently say they dislike.

As such, it also provides the perfect excuse for sharp swings in sentiment and short-term-ism as traders attempt to game outcomes and as longer-term investors sit on the side awaiting the verdict of the polls.

Yet, if you had asked Americans or Europeans in the middle of the 20th century and indeed the parents of the hundreds of millions who will vote this year to define their ambitions for the early 21st century, their dreams would have been the world as it is today: one of democratic inclusiveness, increasingly open markets, rising affluence, and more and more freedom of movement, of economic life and of personal life than ever before, all capped by imperfect but radically improved political systems.

The coming months will see no end of obituaries written for the emerging world, and of the perils they face. There is nothing new about these prognostications, and they all miss the glaring realities of democratic transformation and its sometimes tumultuous consequences. They miss as well the degree to which hundreds of millions have seen vastly increased living standards, and are willing to demand some degree of accountability from their governments. That is a recipe for global security, and longterm prosperity, even if far too many declare the opposite.

ADO Jimenez, best known for co-hosting various noontime shows on ABS-CBN in early 2000s, was among the 14 people killed when a tourist bus fell into a ravine Friday.

Bontoc police chief, Senior Inspector Benjamin Challoy confirmed to Yahoo Southeast Asia that Tado, whose real name was Arvin Jimenez, was among the fatalities. Challoy said the 39-year-old comedian was dead on the spot.

“Mahaba ang buhok at ako mismo and naglagay sa kanya sa black bag. Base sa identification card, Arvin Jimenez ang pangalan niya,” Challoy said.

The accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

On Thursday, February 6, Tado even posted on Instagram that he has a long journey going to Bontoc.

Tado was apparently going to Mountain Prov-

ince for a project, ironically titled: “Life begins at the mountain.”

Tado has four daughters, namely Leidulataja, Katrina May, Indi and Tila. ’40 Mountains Project’ Tado, who’s turning 40 on March 24, was to fulfill his ongoing “life project” in the mountainous province.

On Thursday, February 6, Tado even posted on Instagram that he has a long journey going to Bontoc.

And in his last Instagram post, Tado, true to his nature as a comedian, he was even able to joke about his grades in elementary.

For Dakila, an organization on Philippine collective for modern heroism that Tado co-founded, the comedian will be remembered as a great person.

Showbiz mourns Meanwhile, friends from the industry immediately mourned Tado’s passing.

“Magkakasama lang tayo last week, gulat na gulat ako at nakipag inuman at sinabayan mo pa kami sa kwentuhan. Ang dami pa nating plano at isasama mo pa kami dapat ni waki sa mga adventure ng tour raket mo. Tado Jimenez hindi naman katanggap tanggap etong balita. Napakabuti mong tao at dedicated sa pamilya. Di ko na maintindihan,” says Cooky Chua.

Ronnie Quizon, meanwhile, remembers Tado for his generosity and patriotism.

“Thanks for sharing your talent and your humor... but most of all, for your generosity to help other people, the arts, the environment, and the nation.”

The TV host-comedian was among the celebrities who trooped to Rizal Park on August 26 to join “Million People March,” an effort to protest the misuse of park barrel.

Tado also tried to enter politics twice—in 2010 and 2013—but failed to get a seat in Marikina City council.

Tado also ran a t-shirt design business “LimiTado” with his wife.

Career on radio, TV In 2001, Tado co-hosted magazine show “Strangebrew.” The show was cancelled a year later. He was then launched on radio via Hit FM show “The BrewRATs!” with Ramon Bautista and Angel Rivero.

He has since become a familiar face on TV via noontime shows “Masayang Tanghali Bayan” and “MTB: Ang Saya-Saya.”

He was also a supporting cast in Aga Muhlach and Bayani Agbayani’s hit sitcom “Okey, Fine, Whatever” in 2003.

Tado was last seen in the 2013 film “My Little Bossings.”

OTABATO CITY -- The chief of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) peace panels, Mohaqher Iqbal, has said his group is open to accept Ameril Omra Kato, chair of the renegade Bangsamoro Islamic Liberation Front (BIFF).

Iqbal, speaking during the inauguration of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) main office in Cotabato City, said the MILF has been trying to establish a bridge that would pave the way for the return of Kato to the main guerrilla forces.

“We have been trying to win him back because we are inclusive, but our efforts failed,” Iqbal told Secretary Teresita Deles and Local Governments Secretary Manuel A. Roxas who were special guests of the program.

Also in attendance were Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Toto Mangudadatu.

“We did our best but still we failed,” Iqbal said, adding that the MILF still remained open to accept Kato back.

Chief government negotiator Professor Miriam Coronel-Ferrer had been urging Kato to help bring about peace in Mindanao by joining the peace process instead of using arms to fight the government and displaced thousands of Muslim civilians whom they vowed to protect.

Kato, about 75 years old, broke away from the MILF in 2008 following the botched signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain,

formed the BIFF and continued the struggle for Mindanao independence.

Iqbal has repeatedly called on sectors opposed to the establishment of a new Bangsamoro political entity to support the efforts to resolve the decades-old problem in southern Philippines.

“There’s no other better option but to support the GPH-MILF peace process because it is inclusive,” Iqbal added.

Roxas assured BTC members of Malacanang’s all-out support for the passage of the bill that will eventually create the new Bangsamoro political government.

A proposed bill on Bangsamoro is being crafted by the BTC which is composed of seven representative from the government and eight from the MILF. Deles added that police action against the BIFF will continue even if the peace panels are almost striking a peace deal that would formalize the 14 years peace process.

She said the ceasefire is between the GPH and MILF and not with the BIFF, thus police punitive action will continue.

At least 50 BIFF members were killed when the Army’s 6th Infantry Division launched surgical operations against the BIFF forces who resisted when police-led state forces were serving arrest warrants for the rebels facing various charges.

The week-long fighting also displaced about 10,000 civilians in Maguindanao and North Cotabato, many of whom have refused to return home. [PNA]

2 militiamen slain, 3 others injured in Basilan clash

AMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews/08 February) – Two militiamen were killed while three others were wounded in a clash Friday between government forces and an armed group that harassed workers of a government project in Sumisip, Basilan province.

Lt. Col. Leandro Dacumos, commander of the 64th Infantry Battalion, said the firefight broke out around 6:30 a.m. Friday when the militiamen responded to a report that at least 15 gunmen had occupied a water system project site in Sitio Buhi, Barangay Sukaten, Sumisip.

Dacumos said in a statement Saturday that the gunmen were led by Kotatong Balaman, whose group reportedly engages

in extortion and other illegal activities in Sumisip.

He said Balaman’s group threatened to harm the workers if they insisted on implementing the water system project.

The project will provide potable water to the residents of Barangay Sukaten and is funded by the municipal government.

Dacumos identified the slain militiamen as Duminta Gulinda and Bejo Sampang.

Wounded were Almirin Pantao, Omar Jadjales and Oloy Malanji, all members of the militia force. They were rushed to a hospital in Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

Dacumos said Balaman’s group fled to the hinterlands after the firefight.

Volkswagen Beetle in Global Rallycross Series

OLKSWAGEN is giving its rather feminine Beetle a serious shot of testosterone as it’s poised to enter the Global Rallycross (GRC) series. The “love bug” has worked out for its competitive debut and as a result, develops some 560+ horsepower through its turbocharged, direct-injection TSI engine. Tractive effort is sent to all four wheels.

The German automaker has teamed up with the Andretti Rallycross team (headed by yes, Michael Andretti) and will field in the 2011 and 2012 GRC champion Tanner Foust. Joining Foust is ex-F1 and NASCAR driver Scott Speed. The GRC Beetle will debut at the Summer X Games in Austin, Texas.

However, those following the Global Rallycross series would know that the calendar starts in May. So while the GRC Beetle is being prepped, Foust and Speed will use Volkswagen Polo rally cars instead—the same one that won the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2013. They’ll be modified for use in the GRC. Tanner Foust will drive the Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle (pictured) while Scott Speed will be racing the 7UP liveried GRC Beetle.

Winter Olympics open in glitzy ceremonies S

OCHI – Russia on Friday launched the opening ceremony for one of the most controversial Winter Olympics in history, seeking to convince a sceptical world that the project spearheaded by President Vladimir Putin would be a success.

After a build-up dogged by controversies over gay rights, construction delays and security concerns, the 40,000 capacity Fisht stadium on the Black Sea in Sochi burst into cheers at 2014 local time (1614 GMT) for the start of the twoand-a-half hour ceremony.

Fireworks were set off as a young girl named Lyubov (Love), attached to a harness, appeared to walk in the air of the stadium above a procession of famous Russian landscapes.

There was an early glitch, however, when one of five illuminated snowflakes which were to morph into the five Olympic rings inside the arena, failed to light.

Few Games in recent times have been so inextricably linked with the name of one man.

Putin has championed the drive to host the Olympics in Sochi since before the successful bid in 2007 right up to the ceremony itself.

Putin has welcomed more than 40 other heads of state and leaders for the ceremony, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and embattled Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

However US President Barack Obama as well as the leaders of

key EU states Britain, France, and Germany are conspicuous by their absence, a move seen by many as a snub over Russia’s now notorious anti-gay law.

Some 3,500 fireworks weighing a total of 22.5 tonnes are being set off in the course of the ceremony which involves some 3,000 performers and 2,000 volunteers.

‘Making the world love Russia’ The ceremony aims to tell the story of Russia’s history — from ancient times through the imperial era and the revolution — in a way comprehensive and exciting for both Russians and foreigners.

“The main aim is that millions of people feel our love for Russia,” said Konstantin Ernst, the director general of Channel One who is the producer of the ceremony.

Russian female pop duo Tatu, known for their raunchy and sometimes lesbian-tinged music videos performed at the pre-show concert their hit song “Nas Ne Dogonyat” (“Not Gonna Get Us”).

Although both girls are heterosexual, their involvement could be seen as a coded riposte to Western allegations that Russia is intolerant of homosexuality.

But Ernst insisted that the group was simply being used as it was one of very few Russian pop bands known abroad.

“We can’t boast such popular pop groups like London,” he said.

Given that Russia is best known for its prowess in classical music and ballet, these genres feature more in the ceremony than rock music.

HE Rain or Shine Elasto Painters booked a return trip to the PLDT Home DSL Philippine Cup finals on Friday after knocking out the Petron Blaze Boosters.

More impressively, they did it despite missing coach Yeng Guiao from the bench.

But for Guiao, who watched the game from his home in Pampanga, the win was not about being proven right.

The commentators called Martinez “a highly-talented figure skater” during the coverage of the lavish ceremonies.

He was also the subject of a profile by Nicholas McCarvel of NBCOlympics.com, the website of the event’s American broadcast partner.

The profile detailed Martinez’ journey to the Olympics from “an air-conditioned shopping mall in humid Manila at the age of nine.”

SOMETHING TO LOOK OUT FOR With the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games approaching, Filipinos might be wondering who to look out for in the spectacular event happening in Rus-

sia.

After a 22-year absence, the Philippines will be represented by figure skater Michael Christian Martinez from Muntinlupa. The 17-year old Michael is the first homeg r o w n Filipino figure skater competing in the Winter Olympics.

Initially, he did not expect to qualify for the Olympics this year, but he and his mother took the risk of trying to join.

He is looking to qualify and finish in the

top 24 in the oldest sport in the Winter Olympics.

Olympics this year. JR Celski is competing in the short-track speed skating for the United States. He is looking for a gold medal finish this year after capturing two bronze medals at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Celski, who is born to a Filipino mother and Polish-American father, is considered the face of the US team.

His return to this year’s Winter Olympics is a story of triumph as he suffered an injury months before Vancouver 2010. He participated in the last Winter Olympics and won two bronze medals.

Another Filipino competing is Gilmore Junio, a longtrack speed skater representing Canada. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta to Filipino parents

who immigrated to Canada, Junio is considered “the fastest Filipino on ice.”

According to one Canadian news article, Junio is proud of his Filipino heritage even though many may not know or understand what his sport is in the Philippines. Although he had no relatives who were hit by super typhoon “Yolanda,” he expressed his thoughts and prayers for those devastated by the calamity. He hopes that his Olympic gold will inspire Filipinos to rise above the hardships they are now going through.

Accompanying these images is a film produced

by Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI) and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Peque Gallaga on Botong’s vision and artistry.

Although the exhibit features canvas print reproductions of the master’s works, one can still appreciate the beauty and the artist’s beautiful imagination of the world he observed while he lived in his hometown of Agono as well as his collaborations with fellow artists such as Vicente Manansala, Cesar Legaspi, H.R. Ocampo and Victorio Edades.

The Botong Francisco: A Nation Imagined Travelling Exhibit outreach initiative of AFI’s Arts and Culture Division is a traveling version of the museum exhibition held in celebration of Botong Francisco’s centennial birth anniversary at Ayala Museum in Makati City.

The exhibition showcased over forty actual paintings

by Botong supplemented by a short film that captured his large-scale works and murals commissioned

for public buildings. The film had also been selected for inclusion in the documentary category at the 2013 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Flying the exhibition to various regional locations is in line with AFI’s Arts and Culture Division’s aim in bringing art beyond the museum to new audiences outside Manila.

The exhibit at the Abreeza Mall also coincides with the National Art Month and will be open for everyone to view until the second week of March.

DAVRAA 2014 opens today

ROUND 5000 participants are expected to compete in the 2014 Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet which opens today in Tagum City.

The annual games for elementary and secondary students will be staged mainly at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC) in Mankilam, Tagum City.

Athletes coming from the schools divisions of Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao City, Digos City, Island Garden City of Samal, Mati City, Panabo City and Tagum City will slug it out in 19 sporting events.

Futsal, wushu and wrestling are included READY FOR THE SHOW. The Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Mankilam, Tagum City will be the main venue of the 2014 Davao Regional in the events as demo Athletic Association (DAVRAA) meet which opens today with 5,000 athletes in attendance. The biggest and most prestigious games in the region will serve as the elimination venue for the regional pool to compete in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa slated on May 4 to 10 in Laguna.

Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said DAVRAA has become a potent vehicle in fostering solidarity and cooperation towards socio-economic advancement of the Davao region, being Mindanao’s gateway to the world.

The Durians secured 863 points in the overall team standing in the 2013 DAVRAA meet, with a total of 134 medals. These include 63 golds, 50 silvers and 21 bronzes.

According to the DAVRAA secretariat, the venue for the individual events are as follows: DNSTC will be the venue for athletics, archery, football, swimming, and tennis. Arnis, table tennis and taekwondo will be held at the NCCC Mall of Tagum; baseball and softball at the Energy Park; gymnastics, wushu and wrestling at the Gaisano Mall of Tagum; baskeball elementary boys at Apokon Gym; basketball secondary boys at Rotary Gym; basketball secondary girls at Brgy.

San Miguel; volleyball elementary boys at the Fundamental Baptist; volleyball elementary girls at Magugpo North Gym; volleyball secondary boys and girls at the University of Mindanao-Tagum City; boxing at the Tagum City Freedom Park; billiards at Learn Billiards Hall, Gante Road; chess at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan; sepak takraw at Tagum City Trade Center; and, sipa takraw at Foursquare Church.
