he Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Region 11 recovered two of its inmates who escaped at the height of the Kadayawan Festival last Saturday, August 17.

A BJMP 11 administrative staff, who requested anonymity, confirmed to edge Davao that according to their initial reports, two inmates, a male and a female, escaped from the Davao City jail in Maa last Saturday. The woman, called “MJ” was immediately captured while the man, alias Makabalhin, was collared Tuesday morning.

In a television interview, BJMP 11 regional director J/SSupt Amelia Vega said that this was the first time that escapees were recovered this fast.

She said, the escapees could have been subjected to longer sentence if they went into

Still no final report on rat infestation calamity fund

S rat infestation still plaguing the villages in Paquibato district?

This question cropped up as the city government offices handling the P30.51 million calamity fund allocated to help the affected farmers cope with the devastating effects of the calamity have still to submit a final report on the utilization of the fund.

“Technically, these villages are still in a state of calamity,” said councilor Melchor Quitain in a privileged speech during the regular session of the city

council Tuesday.

In February 2011, a state of calamity was declared in Paquibato district after thousands of rats damaged acres of agricultural land amounting to loss in the millions of pesos.

The affected villages are barangays Salapawan, Lumiad, Colosas, Tapak, Mapula, Paradise embac, Fatima and Pandaitan.

AVAO DeL nORTe Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario yesterday called on warring management groups of the Davao del norte electric Cooperative, Inc. (Daneco) to settle their differences to avert the possibility of the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp.

(PSALM) disconnecting Daneco from the grid for failure to pay hundreds of millions of pesos in electric bills.

The disconnection will make more than 160,000 electric consumers not only in Davao del norte but

also in Compostela Valley without electricity.

“It is time for the two conflicting groups, Daneco-neA and Daneco-CDA, to bury the hatchet and think about what is good of the consumers who are real owners of Daneco,” Governor del Rosario said in a text message to edge Davao.

Council wants two Congress representatives C

ITInG it will better serve the city’s interests, the General Santos City council is pushing for the separation of the city from the first congressional or legislative district of South Cotabato and the creation of two congressional districts for the area.

In an urgent resolution, the council specifically asked the house of Representatives to pass a law that will set off the reconfiguration of South Cotabato’s first district and the establishment of the new congressional districts in the city.

“This Sanggunian strongly believes that the interest of the city and its people could be better represented in the country’s legislative branch if it is separated from its current congressional district and reorganized into two districts with duly elected representatives,” it said.

City Councilor Dominador Lagare III, who authored the resolution, said Tuesday the city is now qualified to be divided into two legislative districts as provided for in the 1987 Constitution. he said Article VI, Section 5 of the Constitution provides that “each city with a population of at least 250,000 shall have at

least one (1) representative, and that within three (3) years following the return of every census, the Philippine Congress shall make a reappointment of legislative districts based on the standards provided in the Constitution.”

Lagare said that based on the 2010 national census conducted by the national Statistics Office, the city’s total population already reached 538,086. he said the city is now classified as a highly-urbanized city and that its population figures might have even “nearly doubled as of this time due to steady rise of population owing to high immigration and birth rates.” “notwithstanding the significant count of its populace, however, the city remains integrated up to the present to the first congressional district of the Province of South Cotabato, which also can stand alone as a separate congressional district,” Lagare said.

OReST Park and coastal road are among the big-ticket tourism projects that will soon rise in the Municipality of Carmen which lies between the cities of Panabo and Tagum.

In an interview, Carmen Municipal Mayor Marcelino Perandos revealed a plan to create a Forest Park in a 20-hectare non-productive and

flood-prone land area which he was optimistic of acquiring before his term ends.

“We have no natural attraction here; we conceptualize of developing a forest park as our eco-tourism site,” he said.

The proposed site was flood-prone but Perandos said it could be viably developed into an ecotourism site through cut-

and-fill method to create a land area for trees and wildlife as well for water-based eco-tour adventure. he was looking forward to develop a site for crocodiles, for monkeys and other wildlife species as well as for aviary at the Forest Park where an activity area will also be provided for camping activities of groups such

as the Girls and the Boys scouts.

OVeRnMenT employees and students planted around 3,000 mahogany seedlings in the four-hectare Baltic Tree Park in Barangay Pintatagan, Banaybanay in Davao Oriental last Friday, August 16.

Provincial environment and natural Resources officer-in-charge Dante M. Ganir said the activity marked the continued public support to the provincial government’s advocacy on saving the forest and preserving the environment.

Davao Oriental Governor Corazon n. Malanyaon founded in 2009 the Million Trees Movement which has, since then, been adopted by provincial offices, national line agencies, local government units, the military and the police forces based in the province, and academic institutions, as part of their set annual activities.

“This activity is not just the gauge of our support to Gov. Malanyaon’s leadership and a present for her birthday

(this week), but this also brings into action her vision to preserve and conserve the forest canopy through the Million Trees Movement,” said Ganir.

Ganir cited the Million Trees Movement as a strategy which heightened people’s awareness on the importance of forest to human survival.

Meanwhile, the Million Trees Movement is expected to play a significant part of the Provincial Development Agenda of the Provincial Government in building back the typhoon Pablo-devastated towns of Baganga, Cateel and Boston.

The Provincial Information Office said that the province had set plans to adopt and implement “green projects” to include watershed rehabilitation, replanting activities, mangrove rehabilitation, and coastal clean-up, among other environmental activities which will integrate tree planting. DTI imposes price freeze in Pampanga, Bataan D

ePARTMenT of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Wednesday said a freeze in the prices of basic and prime goods is now in effect in the entire Pampanga and Bataan which have been both placed under a state of calamity due to damages brought by the Tropical Storm Maring-enhanced Southwest monsoon.

DTI Regional Director Judith Angeles explained that “under a state of calamity, an automatic price control is implemented as contained in Section 6 of RA 7581 otherwise known as the Price Act as a preventive measure to avoid chaos that may result from overpricing of goods such as processed milk, canned goods, coffee, laundry soap, detergent, candles, bread, and salt during times of calamities,” hence, the prices of such in the mentioned areas excluding agricultural products should remain at levels prior to the calamity.

Angeles added “upon

declaration of state calamity by the local government, a price control can be implemented for the duration of 60 days unless lifted sooner by either the local sanggunian or by the President of the Republic of the Philippines.”

Also, local governments and provincial DTI offices can adjust prices to reflect additional operational costs or the costs of bringing the products in the market. however, this still needs the approval of either the national Price Coordinating Council or the President. The adjusted prices must be published in newspapers of national circulation.

Angeles warned businessmen of the penalty for profiteering in prize freeze areas – up to P1 million in fines and/or imprisonment of one to five years.

If the case is hoarding, violators can face up to P2 million in fines and/or imprisonment of five to fifteen years. [PIA]

The other reported fatalities were Jeric Sorgello from Barangay Alas-asin, Mariveles, Bataan; Renato Roman Lacsamana, a

resident of Barangay Sta. Cruz, Lubao, Pampanga; Jian Charles Centeno of Barangay Canalate, Malolos City, Bulacan; and Justin Viray of Barangay Sta. Lucia Paguiba, Minalin, Pampanga.

The missing person was identified as Rodrigo Telles, 69, of Barangay General Luna, Carranglan, nueva ecija, who reportedly drowned last Mon-

day.

The RDRRMC data also showed that a total of 143,374 families or 670,186 persons in 38 municipalities or 432 barangays in the provinces of Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales were displaced as a result of the intermittent heavy rains that battered the region since Sunday night. [PnA]

IGaCoS resort owners want PD 1067 provision amended R

eSORT OWneRS in the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del norte want legislation that would allow them to stop the public from gaining free access or ingress and egress from the mainland to the sea and vice-versa through their resorts.

IGaCoS Tourism Council President Araceli L. Ayuste said the resort owners have requested Davao del norte Second District Rep. Antonio ernesto F. Lagdameo Jr., a member of the Floirendo family, to push for the amendment of the law that prohibits structures on the shores that would deny people access to the sea.

Ayuste is referring to Article 51 of Presidential Decree 1067, or the Water Code of the Philippines, which states that “The banks of rivers and streams and the shores of the seas and lakes throughout their entire length and within a zone of three (3) meters in urban areas, twenty (20) meters in agricultural areas and forty (40) meters in forest areas, along their margins are subject to the easement of public

use in the interest of recreation, navigation, floatage, fishing and salvage. no person shall be allowed to stay in this zone longer than what is necessary for recreation, navigation, floatage, fishing or salvage or to build structures of any kind.”

To the more than 50 resort owners who have built structures along the shores of IGaCoS, following the law is tantamount to exposing themselves, their establishments and customers to security risks and will lead to the slowdown in the industry in the city., Ayuste said.

Under the law, resort owners are prohibited from building structures on shorelines within three meters in urban areas and 20 meters in other areas and that they would face a penalty of P10,000 for violating the law.

Resort owners have cited the case in 2001 when an armed group led by a Commander Global believed to have links with the Abu Sayyaf attacked Pearl Farm, a world-class hotel owned by the Floirendos.

The city, whose nearest tip can be reached by boat in less

than 10 minutes from Sasa, Davao City, is considered the primary tourist destination which will soon give Boracay resort owners a run for their money.

Government should protect resort owners’ huge investment in their establishments by allowing them to fence off their resorts and not allowing strangers to pass through their structures, she said.

Ayuste said the public should only be allowed to use shorelines which the city government identified for public use, not in resorts that have been trying to protect their tourists. however, Felix T. Alicer, regional director of the Land Management Services (LMS) of the Department of environment and naturalk Resoruces in Region 11, said that under the provision of the law, resort owners must allow the public to access the shorelines through their establishments.

Alicer added that unlike the resort owners in the city, those in Boracay, considered one of the top destinations, have complied with it. nevertheless, Samal resort owners claimed it would be unfair to compare the city’s situation with that of Boracay because the latter is hard to access by ordinary people. “In the case of Samal, you just need P10 to visit the resorts,” as Boracay was isolated from the mainland, according to Ayuste.

Among these projects include the upgrading of the access road leading to the Rafflesia yard in Bukidnon; the improvement of the Rizal-Dakak-Dapitan coastal loop road in Dapitan, Zamboanga del norte; the upgrading of the Lacson-Lamanan-Inayangan-Megkawayan road in Davao City; the improvement of the Island Garden City of Samal circumferential road; and the upgrading of the Makilalla-Allah Valley Road to Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City.

“These upcoming projects definitely heed the call of Mindanao for better road connectivity among its top tourism sites,” said Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chair Luwalhati Antonino, who also sits as a one of the board members and the chair of the Infrastructure Committee of Tourism Infrastructure enterprise Zone Authority (TIeZA).

Illegal palm oil developments force monkeys to down tools M

acaque monkeys that have developed the ability to use stone tools to open shellfish are in danger of losing the skill because of human development.

Scientists found that illegal palm oil and rubber plantations in Thailand are disrupting the monkeys’ feeding behaviour.

Dogs brought in to

protect the farms are repelling the macaques from the shoreline, which inhibits their tool-using activities.

The study is published in Oryx.

The report in the international journal of conservation comes almost a decade after the first scientific description of tool-use among capu-

chin monkeys in South America. It is a rare skill set.

In addition to chimpanzees in Africa, the Burmese long-tailed macaques are the only primates known to use stone tools.

Researchers have been monitoring these monkeys on the Laem Son national Park, on the An-

daman sea coast of Thailand, since 2007.

On the island of Piak nam Yai, they found that 88% of around 200 adults use stones to crack open hard-shelled invertebrate prey, including rock oysters, sea snails and crabs.

who led this latest study, it is the development of the area in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami that is now threatening the macaques’ rare ability.

“What’s been happening is that over the past six years on the island, we’ve just seen more palm oil and rubber farms being developed in the forest. I’ve begun to notice that the groups that are closest to human activities, just aren’t having kids anymore,” he told BBC news.

Dog days The research team argues that one critical element is the use of domestic dogs to protect the new farms.

The macaques are forced to constantly keep an eye out for dogs on the coast, and the scientists say they are paying less attention to learning how to use tools.

“The monkeys come down to the big rocky coasts and pick up rocks and crack things like oysters and crabs. But if the dogs repel them, the monkeys use the shore less and less and they will stop using tools as much,” explained Dr Gumert.

Asia, there is a growing problem of macaques becoming acclimatised to living around people and becoming dependant on humans for food. They are worried that these skilled monkeys could now go the same way.

“What we’re looking at with these stone-toolusing monkeys is a rare case of truly wild longtail macaques doing their original wild behaviour, unlike most of the other macaques that have had their behaviour destroyed by human development,” said Dr Gumert.

“If we develop right next to them, they will stop going to the coast to feed and go to the local rubbish bin and find food there.”

There is no danger that the macaques will die out but, argue the researchers, if the monkeys lose the opportunity and ability to use stone tools then the scientific opportunity to understand why some animals develop such skills will also be lost.

The palm oil and rubber farm developments on Paik nam Yai are illegal, but efforts to evict the settlers have so far failed.

Earth-like exoplanet found to complete orbit in mere 8.5 hours Artificial reef domes to be

.S. researchers said Monday that they have discovered an earth-sized exoplanet that orbits its host star in the time it takes you to complete a single workday, or get a full night’s sleep.

Located about 700 light-years away, the exoplanet named Kepler 78b is extremely close to its star.

Its orbital radius is only about three times the radius of the star, causing it to complete an orbital year in a mere 8.5 hours, one of the shortest orbital periods ever detected.

Most importantly, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology (MIT) were able to detect light emitted by the planet, a first for an exoplanet as small as Kepler 78b. This light, once analyzed with larger telescopes, may give scientists detailed information about the planet’s surface composition and reflective properties.

While it is about the size of earth, Kepler 78b is most certainly not habitable, due to its extreme proximity to its host star, the MIT researchers wrote in the Astrophysical Journal.

They estimated that its surface temperatures may be as high as 2,760 degrees Celsius. In such a scorching

environment, the top layer of the planet is likely completely melted, creating a massive, roiling ocean of lava.

“You’d have to really stretch your imagination to imagine living on a lava world,” co-author Josh Winn, an associate professor of physics at the MIT, said. “We certainly wouldn’t survive there.”

The researchers also determined that the planet is about 40 times closer to its star than Mercury is to our Sun. The star around which Kepler 78b orbits is likely relatively young, as it rotates more than twice as fast as the Sun, a sign

that the star has not had as much time to slow down.

Keplar 78b was observed by the U.S. Kepler Telescope, which has recently been retired from its planet-hunting mission after U.S. engineers failed to find a fix for its hobbled pointing system. Winn and his colleagues were tasked with looking for earth-sized planets with very short orbital periods.

“We’ve gotten used to planets having orbits of a few days,” said Winn. “But we wondered, what about a few hours? Is that even possible? And sure enough, there are some out there.”

n a bid to restore Sarangani Bay’s dwindling fishery resources, the municipal government of Maasim in Sarangani Province is planning to deploy around 4,000 artificial reef domes along portions of the bay in the coming months.

Rolando Tuballes, Sarangani provincial environment and natural resources office (PenRO) chief, said the local government of Maasim has partnered with a non-government organization and an industrial firm for the massive fabrication of the artificial reef domes. he said the reef domes will serve as breeding grounds and aggregating devices for marine life along the town’s coastal waters.

Tuballes said Maasim Mayor Aniceto Lopez Jr. and officials of leading cement manufacturer holcim and the Conrado

and Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. recently signed a memorandum of understanding to jumpstart the project.

Under the agreement, he said holcim will provide 2,000 bags of cement worth roughly P500,000 pesos for the fabrication of the reef domes.

Such move is part of the corporate social responsibility of the company in upholding its commitment in managing resources responsibly and working with communities to develop sustainable options for their future, he said.

Tuballes said the reef domes will be fabricated by people’s organizations composed of fisher folk, who will be paid by the Alcantara Foundation P50 for each unit. he said 14 of Maasim’s 16 barangays will benefit from the project.

AVe we forgotten ninoy Aquino?

If you are a Dabawenyo, the question is better off phrased this way—does Davao remember ninoy Aquino?

Davao City has streets named after heroes and historical figures, but not a structure or street named after the national hero-father of President noy Aquino.

Other cities have buildings, gymnasiums, highways named after the martyred Benigno Aquino Jr. whose assassination in 1983 triggered a groundswell of protest that eventually culminated in the edsa Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship three years later.

There is no statue of ninoy in Davao City where the Justice for Aquino, Justice for All (JAJA) and Yellow Friday movements led by the likes of nanay Soling Duterte and Jesus “Chito” V. Ayala a.k.a. JVA as the prime movers were among the strongest protest movements. When noynoy Aquino ran for the Presidency, Davao once more unveiled its clout reviving the force of the Yellow Friday Movement to help elect him as President.

Why Davao has none of the iconic symbols of ninoy’s martyrdom remains a puzzle to the young generation who can only recall stories told and retold as well as from personal accounts of their parents and whatever is archived on Google.

Whatever the reason, there is no taking away the love of Davao for the former Senator and journalist who was gunned down on the tarmac of what is now the ninoy International Airport (nAIA), in the afternoon of August 21, 1983, or 30 years ago. It was an assassination in broad daylight that millions watched but no one “saw.” ninoy, in the beating hearts of Dabawenyos, is so much more edifying than if a street was named after him, cast in bronze or stone--or whatever.

Not a foregone conclusion

eneWInG InTeReST On ChA-ChA– Scholars and constitutional experts articulated that no less than the transformation of our political system is in order and this requires the revision of our present Constitution. In a word, our monumental challenge as a nation is to change our present system into a “procedural and substantive democracy.” This is precisely the reason that despite some pretty crucial issues confronting the present leadership, the most noticeable in the long list of priorities in Congress is the idea of reviving the interest on Charter Change or Cha-cha. news stories about reviving Cha-cha continued to brew nowadays.

Despite war on words, a number of political parties have resumed advocacy on charter change. even during the previous administrations the different opposition groups similarly view Cha-cha as a matter of necessity in the attainment of national goals. I could still vividly remember that the precipitating factor behind a Church-led public outburst during the term of President Fidel Ramos was the move to amend the Constitution, which over-bearing church leaders alleged would effectively allow the sitting president to serve a second term. Currently, the president and even the vice president are limited only to a single term of six years. The controversial Cha-cha issue has been on the boil for quite some time with both supporters and opponents loudly making their cases heard in the streets.

Though Ramos has consistently stated that the amendments are extremely necessary to remove defects in the constitution and that he personally does not want a second term, his severe critics and detractors thought otherwise. Ramos then was under constant pressure and the amendment process failed to materialize during his tenure.

hate, distrust and animosity likewise could not dispel a common objective that ironically puts the administrations of Presidents Joseph estrada and Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo and the opposition on the same side of the fence – the desire to change the constitution. Party leaders then proposed the revision of the fundamental laws of the land, not only to eliminate defects, but to make it more responsive to the changing needs of the country’s fast-growing population, long-term societal change and the development of a civic culture of responsible leaders and conscientious citizens.

Moreover, the leaders of different political inclinations agreed on amending the constitution so that the government will no longer be changed at the will or whim of the military and mob rule. They say the move is well within the rights of the leaders and the people to do so. But then again the proposal to amend the Charter during estrada and Arroyo’s term suffered a similar fate. notwithstanding the number of hurdles, party leaders previously believe that the amendments have a good chance of passage. however, Cha-cha Resolution no. 40, which seeks to turn Congress into a constituent assembly or ConAss – a necessary prerequisite for constitutional amendments, enabling legislators to consider nine proposed changes to the Constitution became the center of controversy.

Rabid critics and political detractors insist that none of the proposals specifically

deals with lifting the term limits or allowing the president to run for re-election. Furthermore, more anti-Chacha groups pointed out that one consequence of the proposal would be a de facto term extension for the sitting president because once a constituent assembly comes into being, there would be no stopping it from introducing further amendments and doing away with term limits altogether. Cha-cha advocates as always have a built-in formidable opponent – church leaders and their blinded allies, and political groups with vested interest. But despite the adamant opposition, various sectors in society remained optimistic the amendment process ensures that the proposed changes are not a foregone conclusion.

This time news stories are again spreading around that there’s now a move in Congress specifically in the Lower house to “resurrect” the Cha-cha agenda. Calls to revise or amend the constitution at this stage seem gaining ground even within the ranks of the business sector. nonetheless, this early, the Palace occupant is somewhat reluctant with change in the type of government and seems not open to the idea of holding charter revision during his tenure. his action and body language revealed his true sentiment on Cha-cha. however, top political leaders saw it fit to revise the Charter because in the present set up the executive branch and Congress are often engaged in competition and conflict based on their personal interests in making of policies and decisions. The President and Congress are often locked in a stalemate or gridlock in policy-making. The rewriting of the Constitution and adoption of a parliamentary form of government is the best way to get rid of personalistic politics – politics based on popularity and personalities not on policy alternatives and performance.

Mr. President: join the million man march!

nD while you’re at it, roll that PORK BARReL away… nOW! no one can mistake the outrage being vented on the indecency of Pork and its handlers. Few other items of indulgence in power circles deserve the condemnation and contumely of sovereign citizens of a republic.

Who today can doubt that Pork has corrupted many of our so-called congressmen and senators? They are supposed to be our representatives! But not a one to think of or point to as a statesman. Pork has turned too many lawmakers into hypocritical public servants.

When legislators indulge in shameless thievery, use and misuse public funds, connive with shameless opportunists, or abet dishonesty and other crimes against society, you know that the system we entrusted to them has become rotten to the core.

They bastardize it! And they dare to say that this “baluktot na paraan” is “matuwid na daan”? how dare they make a mockery of local development!

P-noy should no longer temporize. The gathering storm of citizen outrage should drive him to break up the Pork Barrel and roll it away now—or suffer ignominy.

(1st of two parts) the quiet but ever beating heart of democracy—long for integrity, for earnest and honest governance. And they’re quiet no more. They voices rise in tune with the general revulsion towards corruption, venality, and scandal.

Unless P-noy acts decisively, the anger could erupt in unseemly ways, just as it did in the 1960s, culminating in the First Quarter Storm of 1970.

The fury being generated by this issue is but the effect of a long-simmering impatience and disgust with traditional politics and the trapos that wallow in it. People are sick and tired of hanky-panky. They want an end to unlimited political ambition and naked aggrandizement. They are angry.

But there is also anger trained at other people—other Pinoys who allow themselves to be victimized and used by the trapos, who then elect the Lito Lapids, the Jinggoy estradas, the Bong Revillas, and other Pork Barrel opportunists.

Such electors are responsible for keep-

ing the trapos and the cheaters and venal minds in office. Readily misled, bribed, or fooled, they outvote the forces of good sense and proper conduct. It is their political support that got the system stuck on first gear, unable to gain momentum or overcome the debilitating effects of patronage and corruption.

Thus, amidst the rising tide of impatience, there is now a clamor for action. To some it doesn’t matter what kind of action, just as long as it leads forward and away from the ugly reality of greedy opportunism and demagoguery. Questing for decency, honesty, and fairness that the abuse of Pork has bastardized in our society, they want to march to the beat of reform, pledged to do so until the vats of Pork in Congress and Malacañang tilt under the force of insistent, assertive sovereignty and people power.

Sucking the life out of autonomy When you come to think of it, Pork and its cavalier use by Congress has stifled initiative and the enterprising spirit in the community. The culture of dependency that it promotes has sucked the life out of local autonomy. It has stifled resourcefulness and rendered local governments impotent in the face of trapo and dynastic politics.

Who should take the blame?

n July 26, an explosive device went off in a commercial area in Cagayan de Oro, leaving six dead and 28 wounded. On August 5, a car bomb exploded in Cotabato, killing eight and injuring 40 others and on August 7, another bomb exploded early in the morning in Midsayap. Fortunately, it went off prematurely, harming nobody.

All these attacks happened within a span of 12 days.

For several days, news of this spate of bombings was all over the papers, radio, and television. The stories were enough to strike fear, especially among those people living in Mindanao.

The anxiety caused by the consecutive attacks was further compounded when, for the first time in Davao City’s history, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte decided to put the city’s Kadayawan festival on hold.

Who really are the perpetrators of these attacks?

Speculations as to who were responsible for these are widespread and varied but there is the general tendency of some people to link these attacks to the Muslim community.

I beg to differ.

I find it highly suspicious that the recent bombings worldwide are in one way or another connected to the Muslim community.

They seem too convenient to be a scapegoat to be the real people behind the horrifying scenes.

I say this in the light of recent events worldwide, particularly in the Middle east.

On August 1, 2013, Cnn’s Breaking news reported how CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) is engaged in a massive intimidation campaign to keep what happened in Benghazi, Libya a secret. This referred to the attack made on the US embassy in Libya on September 11, 2012 which killed four Americans, including US Ambassador Chris Stevens.

An insider has revealed that CIA is reportedly giving monthly polygraph tests since January this year to the CIA operatives who have been assigned to Benghazi at that time to know whether or not they are talking to the media or Congress.

This is not a normal procedure.

According to former CIA operative and Cnn analyst Robert Baer, polygraph tests are usually done every three to four years, never more than that.

This attempt to force silence on the CIA operatives and prevent them from collaborating with the Congress is therefore unprecedented.

While CIA spokesman Dean Boyd has asserted that the agency is being open to the Congress regarding the Benghazi operation, U.S. Representative Frank Wolf finds the silence and lack of information greatly disturbing.

In light of all these recent findings, I find the spy agency’s actions questionable as well.

If indeed CIA is related to the attack on the US embassy in Benghazi, then it implies that this and other similar attacks such as those that have happened here in Mindanao are merely staged to frame up the Muslim community of crimes they didn’t commit and promote what some people have termed, ‘Islamophobia’.

So is the United States indeed involved in the bombings that have happened recently in Mindanao?

Would they really resort to hurting civilians and framing up people just to justify before the American people their increase in military spending despite the global economic recession?

Are they staging these attacks to justify the war they are waging against terror—wars that ironically still harm the innocent instead of protecting them? everyone, not only those from Mindanao, should be critical of the rising number of terrorist attacks that seem to be so conveniently blamed on the Moro groups.

It is high time that people pursue these questions, for the answers to these could either shatter every illusion that the majority has of U.S. as a savior or prove their views on the Muslim community right.

It would also answer why many bombings here in the country have remained unsolved over the years. not only that, it would also put an end to the discrimination and stereotyping the general public has of the Muslim community.

Someday soon, things will unravel and truth will prevail, but we can only hope that by then, it wouldn’t be too late.

The Department of energy (DOe) and the neA are urging the 160,601 DAneCO consumers in Davao del norte, Compostela Valley, Tagum City, and Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) to pay their bills to the cooperative’s legitimate management in order to avert the specter of disconnection.

The raging conflict which has reached the courts, has confused consumers as to which management they should pay their electric bills. For that matter, a good number of consumers have opted not to pay to either cooperative pending the result of the court battle.

A confused IGaCos Vice Mayor Al David T. Uy told a recent tourism meeting that he himself would pay his bills to one DAneCO management this month and to the other management the next month.

ment conflict erupted, DAneCO was one of the country’s most outstanding electric cooperatives.

The impending electric disconnection has worried governors del Rosario of Davao del norte and Arthur T. Uy of Compostela.

Uy told edge Davao that he was hopeful the impasse would be settled soon.

“Actually, there was a series of consultations initiated by no less than Secretary (Carlos Jerico L.) Petilla of DOe on the problem,” Uy said, adding, “in fact his team will be here next Friday to finally settle the issue between Daneco-neA and Daneco-CDA.” One city and four towns of del Rosario’s province do not have problems with power as they are not serviced by DAneCO. They are Panabo City and the towns of Sto. Tomas, Braulio Dujali, Carmen and Sto. Tomas. The people of these localities had opted in a referendum decades back to be serviced by the Davao City-based Davao Light and Power Company, Inc. (DLPC).

Pilmico gives hope to Sendong victims in Iligan City

ILMICO gives hope to Sendong victims in Iligan City Aboitiz subsidiary Pilmico Foods Corp. gave hope to victims of typhoon Sendong with its 24 classroom donation to Iligan City recently.

The classroom complex, now part of Tomas Cabili national high School, was built in the middle of Bayanihan Village, a 16-hectare, 2,000-house relocation area for families displaced by the typhoon in 2011.

“Our message to the students here: never stop dreaming,” Aboitiz Foundation president Jon Ramon Aboitiz said.

“Students from three barangays in Iligan city that were hit by Typhoon Sendong no longer have to worry about having a place to stay or travel far only to study in congested classrooms,” said Sabin Aboitiz, Pilmico president and CeO. Pilmico and Aboitiz Foundation also turned over an additional 2-classroom building

for kindergarten pupils in nearby Iligan Central School as part of the AGAPP Foundation.

The Aboitiz group has donated 68 buildings or a total of 136 classrooms for kindergarten pupils nationwide as part of AGAPP’s efforts to fill the need for classrooms for young pupils all over the country.

Thousands of families in Iligan City were displaced when Sendong ravaged northern Mindanao in December 2011.

“Pilmico and Aboitiz Foundation, like many others, came to help and provided immediate aid to the affected. But we did not want to stop there. We wanted to participate in Iligan City’s rehabilitation and not just to provide relief. And so while most provided housing, we decided to build the school for the many children of the families affected,” Jon Ramon said.

The Aboitiz group’s presence in Iligan City dated as far as 1962,

when it established the Pillsbury Mindanao Flour Milling Corp..

It has since constructed 57 classrooms

Later this year, more trees will be planted in other riverside areas of Tamugan and Davao rivers in Brgy.

These activities are part of the Tamugan and Davao Riverside Rehabilitation program which is a joint project of DCWD and

The program stipulates that these partners agree to use their collaborated resources and manpower to help conserve and protect the environment by planting and conducting maintenance activities in identified riverside sites.

DCWD, with its

mandate to provide quality and affordable water to the people of Davao City, places on top of its priorities the protection of the city’s main water sources.

The 6-7 native of Luban, Pampanga is not out to take away the basketball royalty title fittingly attributed to nBA superstar Lebron James. By King, he means a future Ginebra King in the PBA. desire to be reunited with former coach and fellow Kapampangan Ato Agustin who now coaches the Kings.

“Any team for me is fine for as long as I am drafted, but if I will have my wish, I want to be a King,” said the lanky left-hander who also starred for nLeX in the PBA D-League.

Sangalang impressed the Davao crowd while playing four games for the hoteliers with his speed and dexterity. “he is fast enough for a big man. he will surely make waves in the PBA,” said Jek Melendres, liaison officer of The Royal Mandaya hotel ballclub.

Breakfast is a must whenever one travels. It is your first meal after a long seven to eight hour sleep, meaning it has to be substantial to be able to carry you through the day especially when it is a day in Hong kong where lots of walking and exploration happens. That is why on this trip, I decided to head on out to have breakfast at the Macau restaurant at tsim sha tsui to have a taste of their trademark pork cutlet sandwich and egg tart.

to be honest, this is not the first time for me to sink my teeth into a crispy pork cutlet sandwich from the Macau restaurant, (I had my first taste of the sandwich at Macau over a year ago thanks to anavi), but this is the first time for me to actually sit down and have a proper breakfast inside the Macau restaurant.

The restaurant’s menu is all in Chinese with a smidgen of english that is actually enough to get around with. Of course if you do not read Chinese, just point to the dish you want to order and expect the unexpected, but thanks to my mom and my (very elementary) Chinese edu-

cation, I can read Chinese characters and was able to understand most of the menu. aside from the crispy sandwich meals for breakfast, the restaurant offered different kinds congee paired with delicious crispy and oily You tiao

(Crisp curlers), wonton noodles and the ubiquitous egg tart.

I decided to go with the classic crispy pork cutlet sandwich paired with a sunny side up egg and a slice of ham (yes more pork). My order arrived after a few minutes with the sandwich still piping hot and beautifully crisp.

The crispy pork cutlet sandwich was just how I remembered wen I first tasted it. a crispy flaky bun met my bite but was soft enough as not to hurt my

teeth. The pork was nice and tender and surprisingly juicy. The fried egg’s yolk served as a dunking sauce for the sandwich adding a creamy savoury layer to an already delicious dish.

OSCOW — A Russian athlete denied on Tuesday that she had intended to show her disapproval of her country’s “anti-gay propaganda” law when she kissed a teammate on the lips on the winners’ podium at the Moscow world championships.

Kseniya Ryzhova said she was insulted that the Russian 4x400m relay team’s victory celebrations on Saturday had been overshadowed by speculation in the Western media that the kiss with Yulia Gushchina had been intended as a protest.

“There was no hidden political motive,” she said of the kiss, shown by television channels around the world.

“Instead of congratulating the athletes, they (the press) decided to insult not only Yulia but the whole (Russian) athletics federa-

tion. First of all, both Yulia and I are married,” she said to applause from Russian journalists.

It is not uncommon for close women friends to kiss on the lips in Russia.

The law against spreading “gay propaganda” among minors is part of the conservative course Vladimir Putin has charted in his third term as president, following protests against his 13-year rule of Russia.

It has been widely condemned abroad, but opinion polls show a vast majority of Russians support it.

Despite calls from gay rights groups for a boycott of Russia’s hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, some Russian athletes have defended the law.

OS AnGeLeS – The testosterone-fuelled world of professional wrestling marked a notable first on Thursday as Darren Young became the sport’s first openly gay active athlete.

The World Wrestling entertainment (WWe) wrestler made the announcement to the TMZ. com entertainment website after being asked if he believed a gay athlete could be successful.

“Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWe superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy,” Young said in Los Angeles.

Young said he believed his fellow wrestlers would have no problems with his decision to be open about his sexual orientation.

“We’re all adults. All sports are physical. When I come to work, I come to work,” he said.

“Some people might not like it, and some people will like it.

“I’m happy with who I am. I’m comfortable with

myself. I’m hoping to be able to make a difference.

It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference doesn’t really matter.”

The WWe later welcomed Young’s comments in a statement on the organization’s website.

“WWe is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWe Superstar,” the governing body said.

Some of Young’s fellow wrestlers also praised his comments.

“That’s a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it,” WWe world champion John Cena said.

WWe, formerly known as WWF, has seen its profile diminish since its glory years in the 1980s but continues to attract an estimated weekly audience of 14 million in the United States.

In the women’s category, holy Cross of Davao College team showed its superiority by grabbing the championship.

The ADDU men’s team is composed of team captain hanzel encabo, Kim Keyonggyu, Jon Soriano, Karlo Valmores, Joseph Yu and Joshua Agawin.

One the other hand, the ADDU women players who placed third runner-up were team captain Aina Balisalisa, Sarah Mae ngo, Karyl Dionglay, Anhelin Abrahan, Jazzy Ordaneza, Alexa Valderrama and June Ramiterry.

Ateneo de Davao’s head coach is Tarhata Gajitos Atienza, while the trainer is Ody Gajitos.

Seventeen-year old Warren Ravanes scored from 20 meters at the middle with a volley shot over PCT-Medvil’s playing coach Ramonito Carreon in the 44th minute of the first half.

Ravanes, however, was substituted by Jeric Taway in the middle of the final half due to leg cramps.

After missing what could be a grand slam title for his Davao ballclub The Royal Mandaya hotel-CMO when the championship games were cancelled on account of reported manipulation of game results that rocked the Mayor Rody-Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Basketball Tournament, the former PBA Best Import awardee shut himself out to a corner and took off his

shoes. he was ready to call it a night when all of a sudden the crowd called out his name, chanting “Corn-ley, Corn-ley.” no, he wasn’t suiting up for the uneventful ballgame—an exhibition with Cebu’s Omega Pain Killer Pro. he was asked by the boisterous crowd to join the slam dunk competition at halftime.

It took a while before the 6-5 Cornley obliged, putting his Air Jordan 13 shoes back on and without warm up took the

three-dunk routine into a breath-taking show. First he took off for a tomahawk, followed by a double pump back-the-basket skimming the rim dunk, then capped it with a above-the rim throwdown that literally hook the Davao City Recreation Center.

Cornley dethroned three-time champion and teammate Devon Sullivan and beat seven-foot giant Greg Slaughter for the contest sponsored by Omega Pain Killer Pro. Towering Mark Andaya, in his first ever slam dunk competi-

The slam dunk contest was a sideshow of the exhibition match between the hoteliers and the Pain Killers after the organizers of the Kadayawan tournament decided to cancel the games after teams failed to agree on a settlement.
