Mother of massacre victim harassed anew

He mother of one of the journalist victims in the ampatuan massacre has reported that suspicious persons have been asking her neighbors of her whereabouts.

The chilling part of the inquiries, her neighbors told her, is that the suspects were showing them her picture.

In an interview Tuesday, Catherine Nuñez, mother of uNTV cameraman Victor, said that around 9 a.m. Thursday last week, four men riding in tandem aboard two motorcycles asked her neighbor (name withheld for security reasons) they were looking for someone in the area.

“They then showed (my neighbor) a picture of me and asked if he knew me and where I lived. my

neighbor said the men were speaking in the dialect but had a peculiar accent,” said Nuñez, who was still visibly shaken.

Fortunately, her neighbor is aware of the ongoing ampatuan massacre case and denied knowing her.

Nuñez’s neighbor told her the four men left their neighborhood with a white Isuzu D-max pickup, with no license plate, trailing behind the two motorcycles.

“Before, when suspicious persons asked my neighbors if they knew a certain Cathy, I still managed to laugh it off. But now, they have a picture of me. I fear for my life,” she added.

He Department of science and Technology (DOsT) is pushing for the development of a strategic plan that would help transform mindanao into a prime science and technology hub in the country and in southeast asia.

Prof. Fortunato dela Peña, DOsT undersecretary for science and technology services, said they are currently working with various sectors in the island for the creation of the strategic plan that would fully develop mindanao’s science and technology sector as well as its vast resources. “we’re mainly looking at helping mindanao

realize its full potentials through science and technology,” he said.

Dela Peña said the proposed plan will initially concentrate on the upgrading and enhancement of existing research institutions, facilities and projects in the island.

He said it would work for the strengthening of research and development activities and programs of colleges and universities through partnerships and collaborations with the agency and research institutions abroad.

Dela Peña, who graced the mindanao cluster celebration of the National science and Technology week, said the plan will in-

clude strategies that would help establish product niches for mindanao based on its available resources and technology strengths.

“It will also set the required investments from the government and the private sector in terms of engineering and science and technology facilities, projects and scholarships,” he said.

Dela Peña said the strategic plan would set mechanisms that would help determine whether the adopted strategies are doable or not.

The official said among the technology-based sectors and industries in the island that would benefit from the plan are rubber

processing, Halal and agricultural biotechnology. rubber production and processing is mainly concentrated in North Cotabato province but plantation expansions are ongoing in south Cotabato and sultan kudarat provinces.

DOsT opened last year a satellite Halal laboratory in Cotabato City but the agency is presently constructing a full laboratory and testing facility in koronadal City.

General santos City, south Cotabato and Bukidnon provinces host field testing sites and research facilities for genetically-engineered Bacillus Thuringiensis or Bt corn of international seed companies.

Gov. Mendoza asks armed civilians to register firearms N

OrTH Cotabato Gov. emmylou “Lala”J. Taliño-mendoza is asking armed civilians to register their firearms, saying that there may be no longer be reason to invest in firearms following the signing of the Framework agreement between the

Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the moro Islamic Liberation Front (mILF).

The GPH and the mILF have committed to work in partnership for the reduction and control of firearms and the disbandment of private armies and other armed groups in the Bangsamoro area, as stated in the Framework agreement of the Bangsamoro signed monday.

“In mindanao, the first investment of a person is firearms because of the situation. That’s why there was an amnesty conducted two or three years ago to register guns.

Hindi naman binabawal na may baril, pero gawin mong legal (It’s not that possession of firearms is being prohibited;

just make it legal),” the governor told mindaNews in an interview saturday. she said by registering firearms, the bearer will be more responsible and the government, particularly the police and the military, will be accountable as to who should be allowed to possess firearms in the locality. similarly, mayor Loreto Cabaya of aleosan, North Cotabato told mindaNews during an interview in his town last Friday that with the Framework agreement, there may be no need for people in mindanao to bring firearms. along with his people, he hopes that both GPH and mILF will follow all the provisions in the Framework agreement because, he said, “If we

can see that the government is sincere to ensure the safety of everyone, maybe there is no need to have weapons.”

Cabaya said the local government is looking at disarming the Civilian Volunteers Organization (CVO) and paramilitary units, considering that many people in aleosan, especially in Bagolibas Village, have firearms to protect themselves.

In the same manner, he added, almost everyone in moro communities have guns because it is part of their culture to protect themselves.

Cabaya pointed out that after resolving the conflict between the GPH and mILF, there are still other things to consider, such as threats from

final screening.

He said the three-minute film was directed by Charles andrew Flamiano, a fourth year high school student of NDDu-IBeD, and was assisted by classmate alyanna Pauline Tambuli, who developed the script.

Fellow students Georgianne eve soledad did the editing while eda Carillo handled the cinematography along with Flamiano and Tambuli, he said.

Pasuelo said Flamiano and his group were recipients of the training programs on filmmaking earlier launched by the city government as part of its enhanced sHeeP- Computer Literacy Program (CLP).

“Now they’re considered as among the best amateur filmmakers in the world,” he said. sHeeP stands for social Transformation, Human empowerment, economic Diversification, environment security and regeneration and Participatory Governance and Transparency, which are the city’s main development thrusts.

Ix penguins have died following an outbreak of malaria at London Zoo. The birds contracted the avian strain of the disease from mosquitoes and died in august.

Zookeepers had increased the birds’ anti-malaria medication due to fears that the wet weather would let the insects thrive. avian malaria cannot be passed on to humans, nor can it be passed from bird to bird, and the zoo says the remaining penguins are “healthy and well”. ‘sad occasion’ a spokeswoman for London Zoo said avian malaria is “endemic” in the uk’s wild bird population.

Preventative measures, including anti-malaria medicine were in place on a daily basis to prevent this “very sad occasion” from happening again, she added. avian malaria in penguins is not uncommon and outbreaks have been recorded as far back as the 1920s, according to Dr stephen Larcombe, who studies the disease at Oxford university’s edward Grey Institute.

The sasa wharf, in particular, is considered to be the biggest in mindanao in terms of the volume of cargo handled.

The award was received by FILPOrT officials led by its president, Henry Lopez-Chua, during cocktails ceremony at the waterfront Insular Hotel Davao last night. according to Lopez-Chua, the IsO award is symbolic of the company’s long-time devotion to quality management as well as a dedication to professional and systematic approach to its operations.

Lopez-Chua pointed out that the international recognition likewise means that FILPOrT’s management system meets the requirements of the IsO 9001:2008 standard.

Organized in 1976, FILPOrT officially started its operation on February 16, 1977 as the sole and exclusive cargo handling operator tasked to provide services to all domestic sea vessels calling at the government port of sasa wharf and the sta. ana pier.

The designation of FILPOrT at the sasa wharf and sta. ana Pier in February 1977 was in response to the Philippine Ports authority administrative Order No. 13-77 mandating that only one cargo handling contractor will operate in every port. Prior to this date, stevedoring and arrastre services for coastwise or domestic cargoes loaded on and/or in inter-island vessels calling at these ports were being handled by several multiple cargo handling operators in Davao City.

He amount of exports generated by the province of Davao del Norte has increased by up to 653 percent from $0.66 million

from July to september 2011 to $4.97 million during the same period this year.

DOST affirms depleting fish catch in Davao Gulf a

N officer of the Department of science and Technology (DOsT-11) confirmed the research findings regarding the general depletion of fishery resources in a study conducted in ten locations surrounding Davao Gulf from 2000 to 2010.

DOsT 11 regional director Dr. anthony sales said the depleting fish catch can be attributed to factors like water pollution, destroyed fishing habitat, diminishing sea grass, conversion of mangrove planting areas to recreational resorts and poor fishing practices.

The declining fish catch impacts on the poor fisherfolks, consequently making them insecure of fishing as their primary and only source of livelihood, sales stated at the opening program of the 49th Fish Conservation week Celebration held monday at the Grand regal Hotel.

He said the situation makes

them consider other alternative sources of income and better livelihood activities. “many respondents express willingness to explore other sources of livelihood aside from fishing as the catch gets smaller,” he added. sales recommended strict implementation of waste management laws to minimize water pollution.

He said it is necessary for local government units to look at the discharges from the resorts and to ensure that no establishment stands within the 30-meter radius from the shoreline.

“Human activities on the coastal area contribute to the quality of our marine resources,” sales stated.

He said that DOsT can also provide alternative source of livelihood to affected fishing communities through the agency’s small enterprise upgrading Program where aqua-culture

and fisheries are considered priority projects. sales said their agency can provide financial and technical assistance to fisherfolks in the region to lessen the depletion of the fishery resources. “we prefer that the proponent is an organization or cooperative, though we also provide to individual enterprises, as long as they have legal personality. at the region, we can give as much as P1-million and up to P2-million at the central office,” he said.

The study was a collaborative effort of the Bureau of Fisheries and aquatic resources, local government units and the DOsT 11.

It covered research sites such as Barangay Cagangohan of Panabo City and Barangay aDeCOr of the Island Garden City of samal, both of Davao del Norte; and Barangay Tuban of sta. Cruz and Barangay Tubalan of malita, both of Davao del sur.

The other areas included Ba-

rangay Poblacion of Lupon and Barangay Tibanban of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental; and Barangay matina aplaya and Barangay Daliao, Toril in Davao City.

The study was dubbed as “strengthening Governance and sustainability of small-scale Fisheries management in the Philippines: an ecosystem-based Fisheries management approach in Davao region.” a total of 265 fishers were surveyed in all of the barangay sites, most of them male with ages 40 years old and above who spent 11-20 years as fishers.

The fishers usually make a weekly income of ₱1,067 in fishing and ₱1,845 in other non-fishing livelihoods. earlier, Dr. Della Grace Bacaltos bared that the danggit catch in sta. DOLE declares GenSan village as child labor-free He Department of Labor and employment (DOLe) has declared an urban barangay in General santos City as child labor-free as it intensified its efforts to eliminate the incidence of child labor in this city and several other areas in region 12 or the soccsksargen region.

Labor secretary rosalinda Baldoz declared Barangay Bula on monday as child labor-free following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (mOu) between the agency and local stakeholders for the promotion of child labor prevention and elimination initiatives in the area.

“This part of our ongoing intensified efforts to liberate all the country’s barangays with high incidence of child labor and make them child labor-free,” Baldoz said.

The mOu calls for the stricter enforcement of child labor laws, strengthening of advocacy campaigns against child labor and exploitation as well as the provision of alternative employment for the families of the area’s child workers.

It was signed by officials of Barangay Bula, the city government, Department of education and the marcellin Foundation.

amsuNG electronics on Friday unveiled a compact version of its flagship Galaxy s III smartphone, with a touch screen sized to match that of arch-rival apple’s new iPhone 5.

The Galaxy s III mini has a four inch high-definition touch screen, compared to the 4.8 inch version on it’s larger samsung sibling, but the size reduction is offered at a technical price.

The display has a lower resolution of 800x480 pixels compared to 1,280x720 pixels, the camera is five rather than eight megapixels and the s III’s dual-core 1.5GHz processor has been downgraded to 1GHz. “It can be an optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones,” samsung said in statement.

The company gave no details on pricing or an eventual sales date.

The mini’s screen is the same size as the iPhone 5 launched last month by apple, but its reduced fea-

ture set makes it more of a corner man in the heavyweight clash between the iPhone 5 and the s III. samsung and apple are currently embroiled in a bitter legal battle spread over 10 countries over alleged patent infringements.

Initial reactions to the new samsung product were underwhelming.

“The only iPhone it may be capable of beating is the 3Gs from 2009,” said a review in the Los angeles Times, which said the mini’s inability to connect with 4G net-

works w a s “unacceptable for any phone trying to be a major player”. wired magazine bemoaned the lower resolution on the touch screen and said the final product was a “big compromise in a small package”.

But some industry analysts said comparisons with the features boasted by top-end smartphones were missing the point.

“This is a lower-end product and it is not really a competitor for iPhone 5,” said James song, a tech analyst at Daewoo securities.

The mini does boast many of the same software features as the s III. It is powered by the latest android 4.1 Jelly

Bean operating system, packed with s Voice, a language recognition software, and smart stay which keeps the screen lit as long as you are looking at it.

Other features include direct call, which enables you to automatically dial a call simply by lifting the phone to your ear when reading a text message from your friend. s Beam allows the user to share music files between Galaxy s III series and Galaxy Note II devices simply by tapping the phones together. shin Jong-kyun, who leads samsung’s IT and mobile Communications Division, told reporters earlier this week that the mini was aimed at meeting strong demand in europe for smartphones with four inch screens. “some people call the new model a lower-end version of the Galaxy s III but we prefer the mini tag,” shin said.

aHOO! announced it had nabbed another key Google executive, naming Henrique de Castro as chief operating officer.

De Castro will report directly to chief executive marissa mayer, who came from Google in July to help turn around the struggling Internet pioneer.

“Henrique is an incredibly accomplished and rigorous business leader, and I’m personally excited to have him join Yahoo!’s strong leadership team,” said mayer.

“His operational experience in Internet advertising and his proven success in structuring and scaling global organizations make him the perfect fit for Yahoo! as we propel the business to its next phase of growth.” mayer tweeted that monday’s announcement came on her “first full day back in the office” following just two weeks of maternity leave.

De Castro said in a statement that Yahoo! has a potential to use its “outstanding user experience and its massive reach to bring tremendous value to users, advertisers and partners.”

“This is a pivotal point in Yahoo!’s history, and I

believe strongly in the opportunity ahead,” he said.

“I can’t wait to join marissa and the team and get started.”

De Castro was vice president of Google’s worldwide Partner Business solutions group, where he was responsible for advertising platforms and services for Google’s publisher and commerce partners.

Prior to that, he led Google’s media, mobile and platforms organization. He has also worked at Dell and the consulting firm mckinsey.

De Castro will join the company by January 22, “or as soon as he has satisfied his obligations to his current employer,” Yahoo! said. according to a regulatory filing, de Castro will receive an annual base salary of $600,000 and a one-time retention equity award. some $18 million will be in the form of restricted stock units and another $18 million in performance-based stock options. He will get a $1 million bonus for leaving Google.

Yahoo! has been trying to reinvent itself since the once-flowering Internet search service found itself withering in Google’s shadow.

T the time when original inhabitants of Luzon and the Visayas has relatively limited community activities, the muslims of the south were already booming trading partners of neighboring mighty empires.

Tawi-Tawi, for example, came from the malay word “jauh”, meaning “far”, used by the continental asian traders to describe the place. Lakan Ipentun, once chieftain of kumalarang in Basilan, was first recorded to visit Chinese emperor Yung Lo and was proclaimed as a vassal king (“wang”) of the Chinese empire. The sultanate of sulu once covered sabah, over which the Philippines has a dormant territorial claim. The malaysian government, through its manila embassy, still pays a measly rental to the heirs of the dead sultan. Independent kingdom of Butuan and few sultanates in mindanao traded with the great empires of madjapahit and sri Vijaya. The muslims in mindanao successfully retained their independence from foreign domination. It was only during the american colonial regime that many of them were finally subjugated. soon, the american masters were replaced by their “little brown brothers” from Luzon.

It was a proud history. The Filipino nation emerged only when neighboring villages ruled by datus and rajahs united to confront a single enemy. Only then did a common consciousness emerged, hence the birth of a single nation. Technically, Lapu-Lapu was not a Filipino. He was a mere datu somewhere in the Visayas, with no notion of Filipino nationhood. Our country is even named after a Catholic king of spain. when Filipino revolutionaries in Luzon and the Visayas waged war against the conquistadores, mindanaoans remained largely untouched. The muslim struggle for nationhood began not in the late nineteenth century but centuries before that. The earliest recorded fight was the Battle of Tampakan.

Captain esteban rodriguez de Figueroa was slain by rajah silongan of Bwayan, now called Gen. santos City. Tampakan sits on a multi-billion dollar copper and gold reserves and is now embroiled in another battle, environmental struggle this time. Then senator richard Gordon proposed another ray on the sun to represent Zambales, in addition to the first eight Luzon provinces to rise against spain. Gordon, by the way, is from Zambales. For others, the Gordon proposal was designed to appease the muslims. well, the ninth ray is an inappropriate representation. The crescent moon is. symbols are essential ingredients of a culture, the soul and identity of a people.

They empower imageries and encapsulate cherished ideals of a people. Charles Pierce, originator of the symiotic theory of symbols, considers signs as representations of something else. Language, he argues, is the perfect symiotic system. Given the same cultural or linguistic background, a symbol conveys a uniform meaning to a group of people. when aguinaldo ordered for a flag to be made and presented during the declaration in kawit, the design used was largely an idea of Luzon-based revolutionaries. The Visayans had their own flags. Zamboanga was also a different republic then. It was in sta. Barbara, Iloilo, the land of my forefathers, where the Philippine flag was first raised outside Luzon. For the muslims, they saw no need to join the revolution. They had no need to regain their independence.

They still had it. They only needed to defend it. Thanks to direct importation of american-style public administration, a mere replacement of a window pane required approval from manila. Before that, manila was just a swampy outskirt ruled by a less powerful rajah.

The crescent has long been associated with Islam, despite the symbol’s pagan origin. International organization and many muslim countries have crescent on their flags. even singapore and Nepal, where muslims are a significant minority only, have theirs too. There is nothing wrong making adjustments to our flag. after all, it must represent the ideals of this country and its people. If the flag is intended to represent best, it must evolve. The us flag does that. and so are those of other entities and countries, like uN, uk, somalia, Italy, Germany, russia, etc. Of course, symbols are not ultimate solutions to grassroots problems. They only freeze moments of a proud history in time and space. Given their limited yet powerful role, they should represent well and represent best. a crescent on our flag will do just that.

Mindanao peace process: Not too fast

NDeeD, the signing of the initial peace agreement between the Philippine government under President Benigno aquino III and the moro Islamic Liberation Front (mILF) was historic although not an unprecedented one.

In the 40 years of internecine war in most parts of the southern and western parts of mindanao, there were two peace agreements reached and another that almost got under way.

These agreements, the 1976 Tripoli agreement and the 1996 Jakarta Peace accords, were between the moro National Liberation Front (mNLF) and the marcos regime and the mNLF and the ramos government respectively. The botched memorandum of agreement on ancestral Domain would have been the third of this kind, but the first involving the mILF. Past Philippine presidents have always regarded the mILF as a breakaway group from the mNLF that can easily be dealt with militarily until the total capitulation of misuari in 1996. when the 1976 Tripoli agreement was signed in Libya with deposed strongman muammar khaddafy as its principal broker and backer, many field commanders and senior leaders of the mNLF saw the accord as a ruse and a trap.

The late salamat Hashim wasted no time in seceding from the mNLF to form the mILF and pursued a path to more radical solution to the centuries-old mindanao conflict. salamat would later be vindicated as the marcos regime made a sham of the Tripoli agreement, prompting mNLF chair Nur misuari to resume fighting against the government.

By the time misuari realized he fell into the trap laid out by the deposed dictator, the mILF had already made significant headway in recruiting disgruntled senior mNLF commanders and young ideological muslim scholars.

In 1996, misuari finally settled for the 1996 Jakarta Peace accord for which the mNLF was promised greater autonomy.

But like the 1976 Tripoli agreement, the Jakarta Peace accord was never meant to give the Bangsamoro the right to full self-determination. They still were left to the mercy of a Congress dominated by landlords and big business who saw any political accommodation of the moro people as threat to their continued reign in mindanao. The promise of genuine autonomy was reduced to the granting of ministerial powers that only went to the traditional adversaries of the moro rebels, the moro warlords and politicians. misuari, after serving a term as governor of the autonomous region in muslim mindanao, would eventually lose his pre-eminent role in the Bangsamoro struggle.

President Fidel ramos also tried to reach out to the mILF by initiating peace negotiations with the moro rebel group that had already surpassed the armed strength of the mNLF with whom he signed a peace agreement. But ramos ran out of time.

His successor, former President Joseph estrada, instead of pursuing peace, chose a path of destruction by ordering an all-out war with the mILF. President Gloria macapagal arroyo, who succeeded him, did the same only tocave in to pressures for a negotiated political settlement with the mILF. In 2008, the arroyo government and the mILF were close to signing the mOaaD. But it came at a time when President arroyo’s credibility ratings were at their lowest and suspicions that she was using the peace pact as a medium to amend

the Constitution and perpetuate herself in power only reinforced the position of the anti-moro block in Congress as well as local government officials.

The well-intentioned mOa-aD did not even get past the supreme Court where its opponents sought legal relief.

It was declared unconstitutional and its defeat immediately plunged parts of predominant muslim mindanao areas to the brink of civil war.

The botched mOa-aD signing also drove a wedge inside the mILF with senior mILF commander ameril umra kato forming his own Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (BIFF).

The mILF has come full circle.

On monday, the mILF agreed to a Framework agreement on the Bangsamoro (FaB). Far from being a peace deal, however, the initial agreement is largely a broad stroke document where the mILF practically left the future of its struggle for self-determination in the hands of Congress although the creation of Bangsamoro to replace armm is already a moral victory for the mILF as the word literally means “moro nation.”

The organic act that will create the new autonomous political entity (NPe) to embody the aspiration of the moro people, unfortunately, is within the realm of political reality where their previous leaders have failed before.

How the present mILF leadership will be able to reverse the history of capitulation, surrender and betrayal that led to the failures of their past struggles is a task Chairman murad al haj ebrahim and the rest of the central committee members cannot afford to fail.

The FaB is just the first step to a long journey for peace in mindanao. ending the war is way easier than achieving a just and lasting peace.

Now the hardest part of the quest for peace begins.

Bringing opportunities to farmers

He dragon fruit is a very popular product in Ilocos region because of its medicinal value and other by-products that promise sure income for farmers. edita aguinaldo Dacuycuy has the largest dragon fruit plantation in Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte with around 15,000 fruit-bearing plants in her 10-hectare farm. a visit to her farm by several members of the local media from Iloilo for a study tour to some agriculture-supported programs in selected provinces of regions 1 and 3 over the weekend revealed the potentials of the product.

Her discovery of the wonder fruit was purely accidental -her daughter is a cerebral palsy special child. The dragon fruit was given to them by a friend who learned about her daughter’s constipation problem. “we tried it on her and it did work like magic; it was really effective. It was a general cleansing fruit and not just for constipation.

The fact that it is a cleansing fruit it cleanses the whole system thus allowing the normal and effective functions of the body,” she shared.

They started a backyard garden with 15 poles, four plants are tied in every pole, to have a ready source for their child. “when we got started we realized there are some other people who needed it to. There are those who also suffer from constipation, thus we decided to move into a small farm,” she said.

Propagating dragon fruit is not labor intensive because it is a desert plant, she claims.

It belongs to the cactus family, thus it thrives, especially during summer but it can also withstand rains.

“I always encourage every family even the grade schools they can manage to have their dragon fruit plant,” she said.

The farmer has to invest once in planting materials and poles. There is not much of a land preparation, she said. It has a life span of 50 years or even beyond depending on how

You just lay down the measurement where you will place your poles at a distance of 2.5 x 2 meters, she said. The area where the poles will be placed is the place that you should clean.

The plant is expected to bear fruits at the maximum of 16 months; eight months to one year for big planting materials; and one year and a half for smaller planting materials.

The fruit-bearing season starts in april and ends in November. The peak season is between may to July.

The return in investment is felt on the third year while the first two years will probably be on the interest of the capital spent, she said. each pole or post (with four planting materials) can produce around 30 to 50 kilos in a year. with the case of Dacuycuy, they have 15,000 fruit-bearing trees and they harvest around 10 to 12 times annually.

Their cooperative agreed to sell the fruit at P150 a kilo. meantime, they are currently looking at adapting a technology in Vietnam that will allow them to have a year-round production, she disclosed.

The fruit may last up to 15 days but for a longer shelf-life, it is advised to have it wrapped in newspaper and place in chiller.

The fruit in pink or white color is about similar in size to the apple guava but when opened, its softer and yummier. Its seeds are also smaller compared to that of a guava.

Dacuycuy admitted that even with their vast plantation, still they could not meet the demand of their traders in manila and Baguio. They have already gone to as far as Visayas

promoting the dragon fruit.

“For the moment, we cannot export because we don’t even have enough to supply our traders,” she said.

The fresh fruit is not only good for constipation but also for prevention of heart disease, stress and hypertension, she cited.

Its by-products include ice cream, cookies, lumpia, candy, tea, wine, vinegar and soap, among others, made from the various parts of the plant.

Currently, her farm grew initial 11 varieties but added another 19 from California when she got her award as ‘Female Innovator awardee’ during the asia Pacific economic Cooperation (aPeC) women and economy summit held sept 13-16, 2011 in san Francisco. meanwhile, amador s. sadumiano, provincial center chief of the Department of agriculture in Ilocos, stated that the dragon fruit is considered an emerging high value commercial crop (HVCC) in their area.

Their provincial government, he said, is very supportive of the endeavor.

However, their province could not seal an agreement with an interested foreign market because their production could not meet the required monthly volume requirement, he added.

On the other hand, Juvy Gaton, chief of the regional agri-Fishery Information Division (raFID) here in western Visayas, said that several private citizens in this region have embarked on dragon fruit but only in their backyard, specifically in towns of Badiangan and san miguel. she said the Da is optimistic that these best farming practices of other regions will also be replicated in western Visayas to uplift the lives of farmers. she added that the regional office here is willing to provide inputs and assist them in looking for market should farmers decide to propagate dragon fruits. rGaNIZers of the 36th National milo marathon, the country’s biggest footrace, is looking to set a new attendance record this year with 13,000 runners in their radar.

The race’s 36th edition is set to take center stage once again on November 11 for the Davao leg beginning and ending at the oft-used course in roxas avenue.

This year’s run also aims to promote its advocacy of providing more footwear to underpriv-

ileged school children.

The race hopes to share 10,000 pairs or more than twice the number it gave away last year. “we are proud to do the run again this year for milo and this time we look forward to a tremendous response from our running community,” said kenneth sai, the local race organizer, who will have his hands full again this time with the enormity of the technical requirements to hold the biggest race of the year.

For the Davao leg,

13,000 runners are expected to participate in the country’s biggest, longest and most prestigious running event which will feature the following categories: 3k kiddies run, 5k Fun run, 10k run and the centerpiece 21k Half-marathon. Complementing these are other side events like the Cheerdance competition, Inter-school running competition and the biggest delegation. registration fees are as follows: P50.00 for the 3k kiddie run the

In my cosmopolitan kind of jungle, I’d say everyone has an animal instinct when it comes to fashion. Donaire deserves P4P ranking

ONITO “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s dominant performance against Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka in their super bantamweight clash last saturday justifies his ranking as one of the top poundfor-pound boxers in the world.

This, according to esPN boxing analyst Dan rafael. rafael was impressed with Donaire’s ninthround technical knockout victory over Nishioka, who was a former super bantamweight champion and one of Japan’s top fighters.

“Fight after fight, Donaire has taken on quality opponents and won easily. He did it again against Nishoka, a serious opponent,” rafael said.

“For Donaire to dominate such a quality opponent the way he did tells you just how good he is, and that he is well deserving of his place in the pound-for-pound top 10,” he added.

Donaire is currently ranked seventh in esPN’s pound-for-pound list, and fifth in The RING poundfor-pound ratings.

“Nishioka was no joke,

even though he fought a disappointing fight. He came into the bout regarded as Japan’s best fighter and he had the credentials to warrant that status, in addition to inclusion on the esPN. com top 20 pound-forpound,” rafael wrote.

But Nishioka fought very cautiously against Donaire, throwing only eight punches in the opening round and keeping his right hand up nearly the entire time.

He was knocked down in the sixth round by a left uppercut, which spurred him into greater action.

Once Nishioka opened up, however, Donaire was able to show his counter-punching ability.

Pinned against the ropes in the ninth round, “The Filipino Flash” countered Nishioka’s flurry with a perfect counter-right. The fight was stopped moments later.

“This was an excellent victory for Donaire, who said he thought it was his biggest win,” rafael said. meanwhile, in a story on Grantland, rafe Bartholomew – the author of “Pacific Rims” – noted that “Donaire’s opponents quickly go from

fighting to surviving.”

Bartholomew said that since he brutally knocked out Fernando montiel in February 2011, “Donaire hasn’t had an opportunity to put on a dazzling performance.”

“The fighters Donaire has faced all take on the instincts of a pill bug once they feel his power. we rarely see the full range of Donaire’s skills, such as counter-punching and defense, because his foes don’t give him much reason to use them,” he wrote.

“Instead, we see him chase guys who just want to avoid getting knocked out, and we judge him based on how artfully he stalks them,” Bartholomew added.

Bartholomew asserts that if this trend continues for Donaire, then fight fans may have to change the way they judge the best boxers in the world.

“Is the best fighter in the world the guy who shows the most complete and sublime skills, or is it the guy whose speed and power is so scary that it convinces professional fighters that against him, the last thing they want to do is fight?”
