member of the Davao City Council has appealed to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to allow the city’s fisher folks to fish until 20 kilometers from the shoreline. The appeal was contained in a resolution Councilor Baluran Conrado C. Baluran passed during the Tuesday’s city council session in a bid to improve the catch of local �ishermen and
their situation. “If we continue to ignore the battle cry of our municipal �isher folks, then it is not possible that one day, we only have to realize that we have been deprived of the
very jewels right before our eyes” Baluran said. Baluran said based on latest report by the National Statistical Coordination Board, the poverty incidence of our �ishermen in coastal towns including Davao City is at 41.1 perent or an average earning of P178 a day. “We are moved by the recent survey that says ‘Filipino �isher folks, among the poorest in the country’.
