avao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte described Senator Antonio Trillanes IV crazy after he filed a Senate resolution seeking for an investigation of alleged hidden wealth against her and her father, President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

“Trillanes is confused and I think he is going crazy.

I think I’m starting to believe the rumors about his getting hooked on something because there is no explanation of his obsession with President Duterte,” she said.

The mayor said one of the examples of his confusion is the evidence he allegedly got from a certain Joseph de Mesa but he cannot produce the person and

the Anti- Money Laundering Council (AMLC) document which he adverted to previously.

“How come he has in his possession purported AMLC documents,” she said. Duterte, however, said despite of the recent move of Trillanes, she would still not �ile any charges against the senator because she respects his right.

“I respect his opinion

no matter how crazy it is... I believe in democracy ,” she said. “But, I think he is going crazy but I still respect crazy,” Duterte added. The mayor said she would only go to a Senate Inquiry if they will send subpoena to her.

“But, if it’s only an invitation, I don’t think I will attend. If there is a subpoena with a penalty of contempt, I might --- I will go,” she said.

She said she already have a lawyer who will handle the matter just in case the accusation of Trillanes will develop into legal case.

avao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has called on the public to extend its patience during the duration of the upcoming anti-terrorist simulation (SIMEX) called Southern Storm on Feb 26-March 2, 2018.

The activity was moved due to the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) that will be held on February 17-23, 2018.

2 Filipinos reported jailed, fined in Malaysia

ANILA -- While no information was issued yet on the reported incarceration of two Filipinos in Malaysia for possession of fake MyKad or the Malaysian National Identity card, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday assured that legal representation is certain under the DFA-Legal Assistance Fund (LAF).

“Legal representation is certain because we paid for it,” said Raul Dado, Executive Director of DFA-Of�ice of Mi-

grant Workers Affairs in a text message.

As of posting time, no details were released yet from the DFA’s part.

Sara says city ready to host DAVRAA

avao City is now 80 percent ready for the hosting of Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) meet which will be held on February 17 to 23.

This was bared by Mayor Sara Z. Duterte Carpio in an interview yesterday. “We are doing our best to provide them cofort and convenience during their stay here and during the DAVRAA 2018,” she said.

The mayor said the city ready in terms of security, logistics, sporting venues and billeting areas for the young atlhetes who will participate the regional sporting event.

“We are ready to receive them and we are truly honored that we are given the chance to host DAVRAA,”she said.

Duterte said there will be a ‘run-through’ of what they prepared and other needs for the event before the arrival of all delegates in the city.

RP fisheries output dips but aquaculture rebounds

T

he local aquaculture sector rebounded in 2017 from its 6.27-percent drop in 2016, a complete opposite of the entire Philippine �isheries’ performance in the past year.

Philippine aquaculture production rose 1.68 percent from year-ago �igures and accounted for more than half of the country’s total �isheries production, which, on the other hand, fell 1.04 percent in 2017.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed aquaculture’s output hit 2.24 million metric tons in 2017, as favorable weather conditions accelerated sea-

weed harvests in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces in the second semester.

“LGU interventions like distribution of seaweed planting materials and �loaters also supported the growth,” PSA said, adding aquaculture had a share of 51.91 percent to total �isheries production.

The PSA data showed reductions in commercial and municipal �isheries’ outputs of 6.89 percent and 1.05 percent, respectively, weighed down aggregate �isheries production in 2017.

“We’re �latly rejecting the call of the physicians to put an end to the exhumation because the position of the government is we’re in search of the truth, we will resort to autopsy when it’s needed,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace brie�ing.

DICT to agencies: Use social media to promote programs M

ANILA -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is encouraging government agencies to utilize social media to create awareness on its various programs and policies and ensure the participation of citizens.

This as the department has crafted its guidelines on the use of social media for the agencies under the Executive branch of the government.

The proposed Administrative Order on Social Media Use for Government seeks to provide framework for government agencies to manage their social media accounts; establish rules for responsible and safe use of social media by government employees taking into account their right to privacy

and freedom of expression and encourage the use of social media to promote good governance, transparency and accountability, citizen participation and improvement of public service delivery.

“We are encouraging the use of social media for our advocacy, programs and policies. We need to strike a balance on how to use social media to improve productivity and governance and at the same time taking care of public trust and upholding

public interest,” National ICT Governance Service Dir. Maria Teresa Magno-Garcia said during the public consultation with information and communications technology (ICT) organizations and other members of the private sector held in Quezon City Monday.

sent the agency or any of its programs for a speci�ic audience, activity or purpose should seek approval from the social media of�icer or the head of the agency through the social media of�icer.

The proponent must de�ine the following: social media account name; platform; account administrator; target audience; duration of activity/account; and content management plan which involves content creation and publishing approval process, participation and moderation policy and records management.

Posting or uploading of content shall be done only by an authorized personnel including the social media team, legal affairs or head of the agency.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made this statement following reports that President Rodrigo Duterte plans to develop ancestral domain lands with the help of investors to pave the way for the increase of opportunity for work among the IPs. Duterte bared his plan during last week’s Indigenous People’s Leaders Summit organized by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Davao City.

Roque clari�ied that Duterte “did not intend to ask the Lumad to relocate.”

“I do not read din the transcript that he asked them to move. What I read is he will ask investors to come in and my reading is that because you need to encourage economic activity in Lumad’s territory,” Roque said in a Palace brie�ing.

“He (Duterte) is not forcibly removing them from ancestral domains. Let’s not claim a monopoly of knowl-

edge of what the Lumad communities’ problems are,” he added.

Roque explained that the law states that Lumad communities can allow economic activity to take place in their territory subject to the terms and conditions they may impose.

“What he (Duterte) meant perhaps by reclamation is, if there are investors coming in, physical relocation but does not mean they will be expelled from ancestral domains,” Roque said, noting that ancestral domains are not limited to 100 square meters.

He clari�ied that it was only “a suggestion” of the President and assured that the IPs will be consulted as it is in the provision of the law.

“They will have to decide if they will allow foreign investors to begin with if you look at the law. So when the President has a suggestion, that means it will take place within the context of the law,” he added.

The Palace Spokesperson also noted that IPs can also refuse foreign investors.

Bigger events up during 25th Manggahan festival

Guimaras is determined to “level up” activities this year to mark the 25th anniversay of its Manggahan Festival, a celebration of thanksgiving for their bountiful blessing.

The festival will run from May 11-22, 2018.

Guimaras tourism of�icer-in-charge Liberty Ferrer said they were now in the process of making an inventory of their mango production to determine how much they could supply during the festival, which was famous for its sweet mangoes.

Ferrer said they would be strengthening their mango-related activities such as the “all-you-caneat” event and the mango chandelier contest.

Ushering the Manggahan Festival highlights will be the Manggahan sa Kabanwahanan where a cultural presentation will be held in each of the �ive municipalities of Guimaras after the Manggahan caravan slated on April 2.

Manggahan will also host several national sports events such as the biking and the motocross

dubbed “King of Kings”, which is expected to gather the best riders in the country.

A bigger and better cultural presentation, especially that their festival champion—Hubon Manguguma from the town of San Lorenzo—won the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Competition of the 2018 Dinagyang Festival is expected to perform.

Ferrer said they look forward to get the participation of other festivals from outside Western Visayas. Last year, festivals from other provinces in Region 6 joined the cultural presentation.

This major tourist attraction is expected to gather close to a hundred thousand tourists.

Last year, they recorded assisting more than 60,000 guests.

“We target an increase of 15 percent in our tourist arrivals for the Manggahan Festival,” she said.

During the awarding ceremony last January 22, 2018, BOC District XII Collector Atty. Erastus Austria lauded TSI as well as 19 other importers and exporters for their contribution to the agency’s P2.8-billion collection surplus last year.

“2017 is the 90th year of the Port of Davao. This very important milestone has been made extra special because of your contribution to our performance. In 2017, we collected a total of P16.4 billion versus the P13.6 billion target for the year. This resulted to a P2.8-billion surplus in our collection target,” Austria told the awardees.

For Austria, these companies made history as they helped propel the Port of Davao to become the country’s top district in terms

of collection surplus. The last time the district had breached the billion-peso surplus mark was in 2014 with P1.4 billion .

TSI has been regularly importing coal from Indonesia in the operation of the 300-megawatt Davao Baseload Power Plant in Toril, Davao City. The power plant is the �irst in Mindanao to utilize the Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology and is the �irst in the Philippines to be built with a coal dome.

These features help ensure that the plant’s operations have the least possible adverse effects to the community and the environment.

DOF Undersecretary Gil Beltran also said the initial tests on the country’s interconnection with other ASEAN economies, starting with Indonesia via the ASEAN Single Window had been successful, with “development and testing to continue in the next few weeks.”

The ASW is a regional initiative that aims to speed up cargo clearances and promote economic integration by enabling the electronic exchange of border documents among the organization’s 10 member-states. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are already using the ASW to exchange information on customs clearances.

Beltran said the ASW’s interconnection tests will run until May 2018 for newly connected countries Philippines, Cambodia and Brunei.

In the Philippines, a National Single Window was set up by the DOF in partnership with the Department of Infor-

mation Technology through the TradeNet platform, which will involve a total of 76 agencies to make it fully operational.

The TradeNet platform for traders, which will also serve as the Philippines link to the ASEAN Single Window (ASW) gateway, was launched last December and is expected to minimize the costs of doing business and cut the processing time for the issuance of import and export permits, Beltran said.

isted healthcare company Philab Holdings Corp. has earmarked USD150 million for capital spending this year, mostly to build new satellite clinics.

Philab chair and chief executive of�icer Hector Thomas Navasero said USD100 million of the total capital budget would be used to establish satellite clinics called “Philsat” across the country, while the remaining USD50 million would be invested in genetics and pharmaceuticals.

“We will raise that money but I have commitments from speci�ic investors who are very keen on what we are doing. They love genetics, they love satellite clinics,

they love healthcare, they love rural health,” Navasero told reporters.

“If it’s in the Philippines, we are looking at diagnostic pharmaceuticals. Around the world, it has to be health technology, innovation,” Navasero said, saying the Philab group plans to invest more in healthcare.

Last week, Philab invested PhP500 million or USD10 million in a collaboration deal with United States-based Veritas Genetics to expand its operations worldwide, starting in the Asia-Paci�ic region.

In a statement, the telecommunications giant said this year’s capital expenditure (capex) will exceed PHP50 billion and is expected to stay at that level for the next two years.

This will bring the company’s total capex from 2016 to nearly PHP260 billion or USD5 billion.

he House Committee on Appropriations chaired by Davao City Congressman Karlo Nograles has approved the budgetary provision of a measure that promotes honesty in the marketplace, particularly with use of a timbangan or weighing devices.

Given the Appropriations panel’s nod was the currently unnumbered substitute bill to House Bill (HB) No.2957, which is entitled “An Act for the establishment of a Timbangan ng Bayan Center in all markets nationwide, amending for the purpose, Chapter II of Republic Act No. 7394, otherwise known as the Consumer Act of the Philip-

pines.”

“This measure seeks to further improve the protection of consumers by the state. The Consumer Act has been in effect for almost 26 years now, so some of its provisions need to be attuned to the times,” Nograles said.

HB No.2957 was principally authored by former president and now Pampan-

ga 2nd district Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

During a deliberation on its resulting substitute bill last January 17, the Nograles panel recommended that the measure’s appropriations provision (Section 6) indicate that “the amount necessary to carry out the provisions of Section 1... shall be charged against the internal revenue allotment (IRA) and other funds of the local government unit concerned.”

Section 1 of the measure effectively inserts a new provision under Article 62 of Chapter II of RA No. 7394.

The provision calls for the

establishment of Timbangan ng Bayan Centers in all markets in the country “where instruments for determining weights and measures shall be open for and accessible to anyone who wants to verify the accuracy of the quantity and measurement of the products they purchased.”

Security Bank earnings up 20% to record-high P10.3 B in 2017

ecurity Bank Corporation’s (PSE: SECB) net income grew 20% to a record-high Php 10.3 billion in 2017. This was driven by a 22% or Php 3.5 billion increase in net interest income to Php 19.4 billion and a 15% growth in non-interest income to Php 5.7 billion. Trading gains amounted to Php 2.4 billion, up 36%. Service charges, fees and commission income was Php 2.2 billion, up 3%. Total revenues increased 20% to Php 25.1 billion.

For the fourth quarter 2017, net income increased 49% year-on-year to Php 2.9 billion, driven by a 16% growth in net interest income to Php 5 billion and gain on sale of securities of Php 1.3 billion.

Loans increased 28% to Php 369 billion. Wholesale loans grew 25%, of which corporate loan growth was 25% and middle market loan growth was 24%. Consumer loans continued with its tra-

jectory, growing 49%. Consumer loans account for 16% of total loans, up from 13% in 2016. Deposits grew 19%, with low-cost deposits growing 18%. Net interest margin improved to 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2017 from 3.2% of previous quarter and 3.1% a year ago.

Asset quality remained healthy with net non-performing loan ratio (NPL) at 0.02% at year-end 2017, an improvement from 0.11% of third quarter 2017. Provision for credit losses during the year was Php 656 million.

NPL reserve cover increased to 239% at year-end 2017 from 220% of previous quarter.

The cost-to-income ratio was 49.8%. Operating expense growth, excluding provisions for credit and impairment losses, was 19% due to higher gross receipts taxes, a 14% growth in manpower cost, and a 48% increase in

Uy identi�ied them as the following: Garama Sulayman, 21; Omar Jaljalis, 18; and, Marhaban Pael, 34, who surren-

Uy said Sulayman alias Abu Tarik is number nine in the list of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as among the notorious ASG member in Basilan.

AMBOANGA CITY -- The City Council is pushing for the conversion of the two Technical Vocational (VocTech) schools into a city government-owned college.

To be converted into a college are the Ayala and Vitali Technical Vocation Schools which will be named Colegio De La Ciudad de Zamboanga.

Councilor Elbert Atilano Sr. on Monday told the Philippine News Agency that the conversion of the two vocational schools is aimed to bring tertiary education closer to resi-

dents in the far-�lung areas.

The Ayala Vocational Technical School is located in Barangay Ayala which is 16 kilometers west of the city, while Vitali Vocational Technical School is in Barangay Vitali 73 kilometers east of City Hall.

nly recently, the regional health of�ice in Davao City came out with a report that in 2017, one hundred ten cases of leprosy were recorded, or 39.2% higher than 2016. This included the sixty-three patients diagnosed with leprosy at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

If today leprosy is viewed principally as a medical case affecting skin and nerves, close to a century ago, the illness was a political matter that threatened the country’s coconut industry. Certain sectors in Washington wanted the product banned or its importation banned by using it as an excuse in the sprerad of leprosy and other diseases.

A May 1924 article in The American Chamber of Commerce Journal titled ‘Defaming Our coconut Products’, provides a spine-tingling scenario to sabotage the product.

“According to of�icial advices received by the Governor General [Leonard Wood] from Washington, certain interests in the United States have embarked upon a campaign having as its object the barring of the importation of Philippine coconut products on the ground that they are produced under unsanitary and unhygienic conditions and are likely to spread such diseases as leprosy, yaws and dysentery among humans, and foot and mouth disease among cattle.

A news dispatch, released by the Agence France Presse (AFP), said that while cancer treatment improves and survival rates go up, “so too does the number of people af�licted with the deadly disease.”

“The 14 million new cancer cases worldwide recorded in 2012 will balloon to 24 million within two decades, outstripping the increase in global population,” the AFP report said, quoting the Geneva-based World Health Organization.

In 2015, all forms of cancer combined claimed 8.8 million lives throughout the world. This made cancer as the second leading cause of death after heart disease.

“We know how to help avoid it, and to detect it. We’re getting better at treating it. But overall, we’re not making real heady in the �ight against cancer,” deplored Christopher Leroux, head of communications for France’s League Against Cancer.

The AFP report cited several reasons why cancer cases throughout the world are increasing. Ageing population has been singled out as one cause.

The older a person, the most likely he or she gets the disease. “Cancer risk increases with age,” the report pointed out.

The former resent the competition of butter substitutes made of coconut oil and the latter desire to monopolize the vegetable oil market for manufacturing purposes in the United States. So far has this campaign of defamation proceeded, that the matter of keeping out Philippine coconut oil products will be submitted to referendums in the states of Oregon and Washington during the next elections.

“Never has a more unfounded or more untruthful mass of propaganda been promulgated than that which is directed against these Philippine products. Copra, the dried meat of the coconut, is produced by drying in the sun or in specially designed apparatus or kilns. This process alone should be suf�icient to insure sterility. In the making of oil, the copra is ground �ine, then boiled before extraction commences, which is performed at a temperature of between 220 and 240 degrees, Fahrenheit, a heat high enough to kill all pathologic germs and render the oil and oil cake residue absolutely sterile.

“The process is gone through twice, so that there is double insurance against germ infection. It is wholly mechanical and virtually no human contact occurs. The intimation that there is even a possibility of

As a consequence, a legislation was enacted in Washington and Oregon for approval by electors. The central subject of the plebiscite was to prohibit “the sale of edible products manufactured from Philippine Islands coconut oil and copra... [due to] the supposedly unsanitary conditions under which copra and coconut oil are reported made in the Philippines.”

This claim, though, was challenged by local manufacturers who wrote the “State Boards of Health of Oregon and Washing-

ton requesting that proof be furnished of the existence of any pathogenic organisms in Philippine coconut oil”, adding “that Philippine exports of this commodity are the equal if not the superior, as regards wholesomeness and cleanliness, to that produced anywhere in the world, and it is hoped that the electorates of these two States will not be deceived by the instigators of this unjust propaganda. “ The politicization of leprosy was part of the black propaganda designed to put Wood in the spotlight. Eradication of the illness was his �lagship medical initiative, which earned suspicion in the United States instead of being appreciated for its signi�icance.

Even after the governor-general’s death, the campaign to eliminate leprosy continued with the Leonard Wood Memorial Fund for the Eradication of Leprosy, through the assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation. Given the medical inroads of the project, by 1929 the Philippines became the leading country when it comes to treating the once-dreaded skin disorder.

The medical advancement gained in treating was highlighted in the July 1929 article titled ‘Leonard Wood’s Vision: Leprosy Eradication’, which was also publiced in the same journal: “The Philippines are on the way to lep-

Unlike the coconut and its by-products, which continue to gain impact in the world market, the issue of leprosy remains a political consideration among local government units. Especially Davao, it now claims the credit as the most productive coconut region in the archipelago.

“Whether or not there are fewer cases in rural areas is hard to tell. Generally, cancer cases in remote barrios are not reported.”

In the Philippines, the PCSI says 80% of all cancers can be attributed to environmental in�luences, particularly those related to lifestyle practices, especially eating. “About one-third of all cancer deaths may be related to what we eat,” it points out.

As such, the PCSI recommends eating a lot of high-�iber foods like fruits, whole grains and vegetables. “Fiber helps get rid of a lot of toxins and carcinogens from the body because it helps a person digests food and eliminates waste better,” the cancer society explains. Good sources of �iber foods are corn, rice, peas, sweet potato, gabi, kangkong, mangoes, and tomatoes.

Cancer on the rise

Another reason: unhealthy lifestyle. These include smoking, eating poorly, lack of exercise, drinking alcohol and obesity.

Then, there’s that risk of being exposed to carcinogenic industrial pollutants (asbestos to name one) and organic pollutants (dioxin, heavy metals and small air particles that lodge in the lungs).

In 1998, WHO in its report, Life in the 21st Century: A Vision for All,” warned: “Cancer will remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide.”

In the Philippines, cancer ranks third in leading causes of morbidity and mortality, based on the statistics compiled by the Department of Health.

In the top list are communicable diseases and cardiovascular.

For every 1,000 Filipinos living today, one gets cancer. And the incidence is higher among females than males, according to the Philippine Cancer Society, Inc. (PCSI). Ninety-one percent occur between the ages of 35 and above.

Three-fourths of all cancer cases in the country emerge among those between the ages 60 and above. The leading cancer sites/types are lung, breast, cervix, liver, colon and rectum, prostate, stomach, oral cavity, ovary and leukemia.

A book author to watch for

itzie Sanchez, as an author, never rings a bell. She writes romantic novels but not on the style of Nora Ephron. She’s more of Joan Collins, minus the Hollywood movies and television background.

In fact, she could be the Filipino version of British author E. L. James, the person behind 2011’s “Fifty Shades of Grey.” But without those sex tools, for which the book is famous for!

Sanchez is an author who doesn’t use any symbolism. She writes the way it should be; there are no birds and bees and �lowers, but rather she scribes penis, vagina, and sexual intercourse in a manner that there’s nothing much left to the imagination.

In Chapter 7 of her latest opus, the two leading characters

– Pamela and Bryan – �inally tied the nuptial knot. They had done “it” before but the very night after they got married, they made love.

The author wrote: “Bryan stepped out of his shoes and removed the rest of his clothing. They joined the heap of Pamela’s clothes on the �loor. Then he was back behind her. He nipped her ear; kissed her nape then held her breasts in each hand testing its weight as his thumbs circled her nipples. Then one hand glided lower to abdomen, to crotch, and caressed her vulva over the lacy

underwear.

“There’s something sensual about seeing their foreplay instead of just doing it. Feeling his hands over her body and looking at it at the same time only made it more erotic. Pamela felt the warmth emanating from him, from her own body, and their combined heat simmered their blood as desires streamed in their bodies.”

There’s no need to quote further what happened next. You probably get the drift already. The above paragraphs are a little bit tame compared to what you get to read in other

chapters of the book.

But there’s more to the novel than just sex scenes. It is a love story. A story of three people who are in love: Bryan, Pamela and Philip. They had all the chances of being happy but along the way, they lost it.

Bryan had his chances but tarnished his marriage with unfaithfulness. In the novel, he had to make the ultimate sacri�ice to repossess what he had lost.

Pamela, on the other hand, took her chances on rekindled love. All is not lost, however, but she has to face the consequences of her actions and to make amends and keep her promises.

In the case of Philip, he had the chance to recapture the past and be with the woman he truly loves. All is fair in love but he has now to learn to let her go. For the second time.

Can there be another chance in the future?

That is a question that may be answered in the �inal saga of this second chances trilogy. “Lost Chance” is the second part; the �irst part was entitled, “Fair Chance.”

The novel gives us a glimpse of what we done in the past will have an impact today. And how we respond to those impacts shape our future. To err is human, so said Alexander Pope, to forgive is divine. That’s what second chances is all about.

Or to quote the author herself: “Though the past should not determine the future, our past actions or choices and decisions have brought us to our current/present situations. If we have learned from that, then we are in a better position to make decisions or present choices to shape the future.”

Writing the �irst novel was not dif�icult at all, according to Sanchez. After all, it is a story about rekindled love, reawakened feelings and fervent yearnings. But the second novel was totally different; it is about betrayals, secrets, forgiveness and redemption.

What makes the novel interesting is that the author wrote “realistic” situations and yet show the “human sides” of each character: the �laws and admirable things about them. The good and the bad. The human frailties and strengths.

To make the characters more believable, she had to write them as if she was the one doing all those actions. “Internalizing each role was more unsettling than gratifying,” she explained. “I had to place myself in each situation. Portray the role of seductress, and be the betrayed wife in the next chapter. Or empathize with a lover’s longing now, and express the outrage of a husband next.”

Places (where she had been) and songs (which she heard during her growing up years) played a big part in the novel.

Although the novel was a mere product of her imagination, she did some researches and talked with some experts to verify what she was writing happens – even how they behave and dressed.

She also had an intimate talk with her Ob-Gyn to verify regarding what is already known on pregnancy. She likewise looked up in articles about pregnancy and childbirth. “As I underwent one myself, I know some details �irsthand,” she says.

Since one of the leading characters, Bryan, is a lawyer, Sanchez has to talk with real life friends in the legal �ield for certain legal matters and practices.

Dr. Maria Gemima Valderrama, an university professor, edited the novel; she also edited the �irst book. The cover of the second book was conceptualized by Ernest John G. Ulep, a communication art student from the Ateneo de Davao University.

So, who is Mitzie Sanchez? The back cover of the book gives a glimpse: “A graduate of Business Administration major in Management at Ateneo de Davao University, she has always

loved to craft stories to touch other people’s lives. Though she took a business course, the meaningful and desirable plots never left her mind.

“After visiting some places when she worked with a Canadian �irm under a CIDA-funded project and as a Buyer’s representative in the furniture industry, she realized that her experiences and observations of Filipinos working or living abroad, and the intrinsic cultural and lifestyle differences can become the key elements in her story. She depicted them all in her stories in parallel to the lives of the people they’ve left behind.”

Sanchez was born in Glan, Sarangani Province, the seventh girl of seven and the ninth of 9 siblings. She spent three years of her life in this town until her parents brought her to Suop, a small barrio 17 kilometers away from Asuncion, Davao del Norte. She �inished her elementary at Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Elementary School and attended Holy Cross Academy of Sasa for her secondary education.

The author, unlike her Pamela character, is happily married and the union has produced one son. They live in Davao City but she travels every now and then to Canada and the United States.

The �inal words about “Lost Chance”: Love comes from the most unexpected places. It also has many facets and choices. This second book of the trilogy is not only heartbreaking but also heart-wrenching. There is no forever – even in pain. Everyone deserves second chance. Everyone needs happiness. And this novel, written in fast-paced manner and free-willing rhythm, is a journey of taking chances. A must read!

There’s a river mouth break that helps beginners practice their surf basics and a nearby reef break that has a beautiful parola right in front of the lineup.

espite having a quiet year with no new vehicle offerings in the market (or even minor updates at that), Ford Philippines managed to cap off 2017 with a recordbreaking 36,623 units sold. It marks the best year ever for the American carmaker. This year, Ford aims to continue that stellar growth by launching not one, not two, but seven new vehicles for Philippine the market.

Speaking at a media roundtable, Peter Fleet, President of Ford Asia Paci�ic and Bertrand Lessard, Managing Director of Ford Philippines revealed their plans to launch the �irst-ever Ranger Raptor, all-new Expedition, refreshed Ranger, refreshed Explorer, refreshed EcoSport, refreshed Everest, and refreshed Mustang.

Expected to bow in �irst (at least at the regional level) will be the �irst-ever Ranger Raptor—a Baja-racing inspired truck

that features beefed up mechanicals and more aggressive looks. Set for a Bangkok unveil this Wednesday, February 7, the buzz is strong that it will be previewed at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) come April 5.

Shedding 150 kilograms versus the outgoing model, it will offer better performance and fuel ef�iciency. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 also gets paired to a 10-speed automatic with a new electronic limited slip differential and Intelligent 4WD system. It will also gain various driver assistive technologies.

Towards the middle of the year, expect the refreshed EcoSport and Everest to make their way to Ford showrooms.

Between the two, the EcoSport will receive the majority of the changes with an almost entirely new front-end. In other markets, power comes from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine, but it’s more likely that the Philippine model will get Ford’s next-generation 1.5-liter “Dragon” 3-cylinder engine. erwin Ancajas wanted to impress boxing fans in his first fight in the United States.

The Filipino champ from Davao del Norte did just that Saturday night at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas when he dismantled challenger Israel Gonzalez of Mexico in 10 rounds of action beamed live across the USA by ESPN. Ancajas, now 29-1 and 20

KOs, dropped Gonzales early in the �irst and then twice in the 10th to successfully defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Bantamweight title for the fourth straight time.
