Air Asia exec says of Duterte government

he chief executive of�icer of Air Asia minced no words about how the Duterte administration has been addressing air connectivity and in promoting tourism in the ASEAN region, leading his company to do its share in the process.

“We believe this government walks the talk,” said Tan Sri Anthony Francis Fernandes, Air Asia CEO in a talk before the 4th Davao

Investment Conference on July 21.

He added that what the company discussed with the Philippine government in Cambodia are already being put in place, with him just getting an update.

He said that with the �irm commitment of the Philippine government, Air Asia has decided to launch ‘much quicker that many would believe’ a direct �light connecting Davao City to Kuala Lum-

pur at only P99.

The �irst �light is scheduled for December 21, 2017.

He said the company has come to this decision after he had a talk with President Duterte last May. The opening of the direct �light was not in the company’s immediate plans but with the commitment the Philippine gov-

ernment showed, Air Asia decided to launch it without any second thought.

He said the company sees a great potential for the tourism and transport industry in the Philippines “because of the many beautiful places that the world needs to see.”

Marawi residents told it’s not safe to return home

N

ational Defense Sec. Del�in Lorenzana announced that it is not yet possible for the government to allow the displaced families to return home since the �ighting in Marawi City is still intense.

The Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) in a statement Monday said Lorenzana made this announcement during a dialogue on Sunday after majority of those in attendance expressed intent to return home stressing that “their lives right at the moment is unimaginably dif�icult.”

The dialogue was held after the members of the Ranaw Ulama-Leaders Conference recommended the return of the residents to their respective homes in areas cleared of Maute group members and

Abu Sayyaf bandits.

The dialogue, dubbed as “I will be back, Wait for Me, Marawi” started at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday. It was held in Iligan City.

Lorenzana said it is not safe for the displaced families to return home since �ighting still continue in Marawi City.

Lorenzana disclosed that nine soldiers were killed while 26 others were wounded during an intense whole day of �ighting on Saturday in downtown Marawi.

“We want you to go back to your homes, but we cannot be sure when, as of the moment,” Westmincom quoted Lorenzana to have told those who attended the dialogue.

ity Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has terminated a joint venture agreement with Mega Harbour and Development Corporation that would have paved the way for a P1.87 Billion development of the Davao coastline.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio statement reads in full: ‘On July 19, 2017, we communicated to Mega Harbour Port and Development Corporation our decision not to proceed with the Davao Coastline and Development Project.

The decision came after about more that a year of careful review and study of the available documents and after weighing out the

intentions of the project against its commercial viability, legal and social implications, and the project’s possible effects to the environment.

Our decision to terminate the joint venture agreement is coupled with a resolve that Davao City can really move forward and answer the call of economic growth by implementing highly sustainable projects, both commercially and environmentally. We understand that there are various legal repercussions ancillary to this decision and the Davao City Government is ready to answer them in the proper forum.

I assure you, all Davaoenos,

that in coming up with this decision, the paramount consideration has been your welfare and the future of Davao City.’

Mega Harbour and Duterte earlier agreed to amend the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA), which her father, Rodrigo Duterte, the former Davao City mayor and now the President, signed in 2016, when he was still mayor.

The younger Duterte had introduced amendments to the JVA particularly on the sharing issue, in which, she wanted Mega Harbour to increase the share of the city in the reclaimed land, aside from shouldering the rehabilitation works of

access roads, coastal barangays and the areas of affected residents. Her amendment would cost the company at least P1.87 billion more.

Mega Harbour, in a letter to Mayor Duterte, said it agreed to her suggested terms and from the original 5.9 hectares of land share, the city would have eight hectares. Mega Harbour also agreed to foot the bill for the rehabilitation of access roads, coastal barangays and areas within the project site from Barangay Bucana to Sta. Ana in Agdao district – where about 3,500 families reside.

ARMM eyes Nestle for cassava production

T

he Regional Board of Investments in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RBOIArmm) Wednesday said the region is prepared to supply Nestle Philippines with cassava and cassava �lour for its P2 billion Protomalt processing plant for Milo health food drinks.

Once a deal is sealed, the effort would help Lanao del Sur and Marawi City recovered economically from the devastation of the on-going armed con�lict since the �irm is based in Lanao and some of its workers are from Marawi City, Armm investment of�icials said.

Recently, Nestle announced that the construction of the Milo malt plant in Lipa, Batangas that started in late 2015 is expected to be completed and operational

by October this year.

Lawyer Ishak Mastura, RBOI-Armm chair, said it was it was reported that Nestle sought the help of the Department of Agriculture to source and increase supply of cassava for its MILO plant.

The main ingredients for the MILO drink processing plant are barley and cassava.

Last year, Armm has recorded the highest produc-

tion of cassava in the country at 423,650 metric tons and contributed 55.6 percent to country’s total cassava output.

“We have discussed with the Armm economic cluster agencies that the Armm has a great economic opportunity with the planned establishment of the Nestle protomalt plant, whose main ingredient is cassava, because we are the country’s biggest producer of cassava,” Mastura added.

“In line with the rehabilitation and recovery of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur after the Marawi Siege and considering that cassava in the Armm is mainly produced in Lanao del Sur, the government can support our cassava farmers to expand their production and encourage new planters by building the logistics supply chain to meet the huge demand from Nestle and other end buyers,” Mastura said.

The top producer of cassava in the ARMM Matling Industrial and Commercial Corporation (Matling) based in Malabang, Lanao del Sur, one the country’s oldest corporations. Founded in 1928, Matling Corporation is the leading cassava plantation and cassava �lour milling.

To lessen the burden and cut cost on travel and processing of papers, BMC plans to set up its own of�ice in Laoag this October to cater to more applicants.

BMC is also partnering with the newly-launched 9.0 Niner Laoag, a review center for International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The English pro�iciency examination is required for non-native English speakers who want to work or study in an English country.

Four sites in Region 12 eyed for USAID-funded project

T

he Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 12 has identi�ied four critical landscapes and seascapes in the region as target sites for the implementation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-supported Protect Wildlife Project.

Reynulfo Juan, DENR Region 12 director, said Monday they are pushing for the rollout of the project at the Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape and Allah Valley Watershed Reservation in South Cotabato and the Sarangani Bay seascape and Busa Mountain Range in Sarangani.

He said the DENR’s Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) and DENR-12 have already completed the assess-

ment of the potential sites and possible partners for the project’s implementation.

The four sites were identi�ied based on the results of the assessment and the recommendation by the BMB, he said.

On Monday, project stakeholders gathered at a hotel here for a joint consultation and planning workshop with DENR-12 and USAID. “We’re here to identify and agree on the set of strategies and major activities for the implementation of the project,” Juan said.

The of�icial said the workshop outputs will be used in the preparation of the project’s work plans.

Protect Wildlife, which was launched in March, is a �ive-year,

P1.2-billion project that seeks to address biodiversity loss and rampant wildlife traf�icking in the Philippines.

Project implementers earlier pushed for its expansion in Sarangani and South Cotabato provinces, which it identi�ied as host to “some of the most biodiverse yet vulnerable natural habitats and species in southern Mindanao.”

USAID and DENR-12 initially gathered representatives from local governments, academe and civil society groups for a workshop to identify various threats to biodiversity in the two provinces, as well as possible solutions.

Among those cited were the need to strengthen wildlife law enforcement, provision of livelihoods to local

communities, and rollout of behavioral change campaigns.

Mt. Matutum, South Cotabato’s highest peak, and the Allah Valley Watershed Reservation are home to various wildlife species, among them the tarsiers, as well as rare �lora and fauna.

These areas were known habitats of the Philippine deer, tarsiers, civets, bats, among others.

He said the project did not meet its original completion target last June 22 mainly due to the delay in the release of the funds from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP).

The project’s construction formally commenced on Dec. 22, 2015 after the city government signed a memorandum of agreement with the LBP for its �inancing.

But Gayosa said the

processing of the loan releases was stalled due to the delayed issuance of the LBP monetary board resolution regarding the project’s �inancing.

He said the resolution was among the requirements set by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to facilitate the release of the city government’s loan.

Aside from this, he said the almost daily rains in the last two months has

slowed down the construction works at the site.

Owing to this, Gayosa said the city government extended the project’s construction period for 120 days or until October 22.

“The extension was in order and there was basis for it since there were works added by the project management team based on its plan,” he said.

outh Cotabato of�icials lauded President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s commitment to pursue more tangible and inclusive development initiatives for Mindanao.

Deputy House Speaker and South Cotabato second district Rep. Ferdinand Hernandez said the President has already accomplished so much for Mindanao since last year and they expect more in the coming months as highlighted in his second State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday.

He gave President Duterte a high rating in terms of the administrations accomplishments for the island,

especially the economic gains.

“I’m rating him very high, around 8 or 9 because we have seen him deliver what he had promised to the people,” he said in an interview over radio station dxKR. Hernandez said he “feels very excited for us in Mindanao” for the major infrastructure projects lined up by the national government for the area.

He speci�ically cited the Mindanao railway project, which will eventually connect key cities in parts of the island.

The project, which will require an investment

of more than P3 trillion, would eventually expedite the development of other marginalized areas in Mindanao, he said.

“If we will have a good year this 2017, we will have a brighter future in 2018,” Hernandez said.

In his second Sona, the President said he will push for more reforms in the bureaucracy, national and local governance and the continued war against illegal drugs, criminality and terrorism.

He also vowed to push for more inclusive governance and to make sure that the economic gains would be felt by the people.

In terms of reforms, Hernandez said the President had made a bold move recently with the issuance of an executive order that reduced the procurement process for vital projects.

He said the move was unprecedented as it assures that there will be no delay in the implementation of major infrastructure projects.

In terms of peace and order, South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance-Fuentes said the provincial government will continue to support the President’s efforts to rid the country of illegal drugs and other related problems.(PNA)

(DOT) revealed that tourism revenues from July 2016 to May 2017 increased by 109.13 percent to PHP 222.30 billion from PHP 106.297 billion receipts during the �irst 11 months (July 2010 to May 2011) of the previous administration.

The report also showed that the Duterte administration’s �irst 11 months welcomed a 71.83 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals at 5.871 visitors compared to 3.416 arrivals during the previous administration.

Citing these feats, the DOT described the tourism industry as a “bright spot” of the

Philippine economy.

“The year-long tourism boom can be attributed to the government’s �irm resolve in dealing with threats, creating a more secure and safe environment and raising tourists’ con�idence,” the DOT report said.

DOT also took the lead in staging various international events, including the 65th Miss Universe pageant in January; the hosting of the 3rd Madrid Fusion Manila, ASEAN conferences, and the recent United Nations World Tourism Organization 6th International Conference on Statistics among other events.

The agency listed “better

relations” with source markets as another accomplishment in its report for inking monumental tourism cooperation agreements with �ive countries namely China, Russia, Cambodia, Thailand and Turkey.

“These agreements have yielded stronger bilateral relations and tourism partnerships between the Philippines and the aforementioned countries in terms of exchange programs for tourism professionals and students, joint promotions, cultural exchange, trainings and tourism investments,” the DOT report said. In its �irst year accomplishment report released Monday, the Department of Tourism

he city government is preparing for the deployment here later next month of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) locally-developed “40-meter train-like bus” dubbed Hybrid Electric Road Train (Hert).

City Councilor Dominador Lagare Jr., chair of the city council’s committee on transportation, said Tuesday they received con�irmation from the agency that the Hert would be arriving in the city before the �irst week of September.

He said the train will be transported to the city through a chartered vessel or barge after it completes its six-month technology demonstration or test run in Cebu City.

It has been serving commuters in Cebu City and the neighboring areas for free since Feb. 15 as part of the test run.

The Hert, which was launched by DOST in 2015, was designed by Filipino engineers and made with locally available parts, an agency briefer said.

It said the “40-meter

long train-like bus” can run at a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour and is mainly powered by hybrid diesel fuel and electric-powered battery.

The electric train was designed as energy-ef�icient vehicle and does not need electricity and suspended cables to operate.

“We’re expecting its delivery before the city’s Tuna Festival on Sept.

5,” he said in a privilege speech during the city’s council’s regular session.

Global smartphone sales reach new record in Q2

lobal smartphone sales had achieved a new record in the second quarter of the year, German market research institute GfK said on Monday.

A total of 346.9 million smartphones had been sold worldwide from April to June, representing a year-on-year increase of 4 percent, the report shows.

Asia led the demand growth with a year-on-year rise of 13 percent, followed by Central and Eastern Europe at 11 percent and Latin America at 10 percent.

Some 110.1 million smartphones had been sold in the Chinese market in the second quarter of the year, slightly more

than the same period last year.

“The record demand for smartphones in the second quarter this year shows that, despite saturation in some markets, the desire to own a smartphone is a worldwide phenomenon,” Arndt Poli�ke, global director of telecom research at GfK, commented.

“Consumers are willing to pay more for their smartphones as they seek a better user experience,” said Yotaro Noguchi, product lead in GfK’s trends and forecasting division, adding that GfK forecasts smartphone demand will continue to see year-on-year growth in 2018. (Xinhua)

WHEN BLOOD CLOTS HAPPEN

ORMER American Vice-President Dan Quayle never knew what hit him. He was trying to promote his memoir, Standing Firm, when he experienced severe shortness of breath and had trouble �inishing his speeches.

He thought it was just bad cold and didn’t bother to see a doctor. It was a bad decision.

On November 27, 1994, he was brought to the emergency room at the Indiana University Medical Center. The doctor’s diagnosis: “walking pneumonia.”

The 47-year-old Quayle was sent home and thought it was over. The following day, however, his breathing dif�iculty worsened and was admitted to the emergency room again. After further tests, doctors re-diagnosed his condition as a “pulmonary embolism” or having a blood clot in his lung.

“You’d be surprised how often a pulmonary embolism is missed, even with most skilled physicians,” Quayle said in a press statement following his release.

“Misdiagnosis is common. I was lucky…very lucky.”

He was indeed very lucky.

According to the US National Institute of Health, more than 600,000 people in the United States have a pulmonary embolism each year, and more than 60,000 of them die. Experts say that most of those who die do so within 30 to 60 minutes after symptoms start.

In most cases, pulmonary embolism is a complication of a medical condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in which a blood clot forms inside the deep veins of the lower legs, thighs, or pelvis. Although there is no single, simple cause, a DVT may be due to injury to the lining of the vein, changes in the pattern of blood �low (like compression, turbulence, and stagnation), and increased tendency for blood to clot and for that clot not to naturally dissolve again.

Health authorities claim DVT is instigated by prolonged periods of physical immobility.

“If a person is just sitting around and not moving, say, during a very long �light, he may risk himself of developing a DVT,” says Dr. Gary Raskob, dean of the college of public health at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Medical science says DVT

starts with blood clots forming in the veins of the legs during hours of immobility (that is, long-haul �lights). When mobility resumes (for instance, once a passenger deplanes) the clots can break free of the vein, and travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism that may result to death.

Almost half the time, DVT strikes without warning. “Up to 50 percent of all DVT cases are unknown – most likely even higher – since most people may not experience any symptoms at all,” says Dr. Walter Fister, whose special interest is on public health and works with the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre in Singapore. “Most likely lots of people get DVT without any knowledge and where the clot forms and dissolves all on its own and they are none the wiser.”

In most instances, doctors misdiagnose DVT. “The symptoms and signs are very ‘non-speci�ic,’ meaning they may be caused by many different medical conditions,” explains Dr. Raskob. “DVT is frequently mistaken for other conditions such as muscle strains, skin infections, heart failure, dependent edema and ruptured Baker’s cyst,” informs Dr. Haizal bin Haron Kamar, associate professor in medicine and cardiology at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.

In some occasions, symptoms may be apparent which include: deep muscle pain, muscular tenderness, swelling or tightness, discoloration of the affected area, and skin that feels unusually warm. “More often than not, these classical symptoms are found in only a minority of cases,” says Dr. Rene De Jongh, South Asia medical director of the assistance services of International SOS in Singapore.

Nature’s way Unlike in industrialized countries, people living in Asia are not aware of the complications of blood clots. “In fact, the public is not aware of the potential health risk of blood clots,” deplores Dr. Haron.

WebMd.com shares this bit of information on what causes the blood to clot: “The process begins whenever �lowing blood comes into contact with specific substances in your skin or in blood vessel walls. When they touch, it usually means the skin or blood vessel wall is broken.”

that form in the arteries have these things inside, too. “If the plaque breaks open, they’ll start the clotting process,” the WebMd. com explains. “Most heart attacks and strokes happen when a plaque in your heart or brain suddenly bursts.”

When your blood doesn’t �low properly, blood clots can also form. “If it pools in your blood vessels or heart, the platelets are more likely to stick together,” the WebMd.com says. DVT is one of the conditions where slowly moving blood can cause clotting problems.

Clotting the blood is “nature’s way of trying to prevent bleeding,” says Dr. Rafael Castillo, a cardiologist and chair of the department of medicine of the Manila Sanitarium and Hospital. When you get wounded, the blood solidify and clump together at the site to help stop the bleeding.

Heart attack But when the body’s protective mechanism goes awry, there is a danger of developing blood clots which can spell trouble. In or around the heart, a blood clot causes a heart attack, the symptoms of which are severe chest pain that radiates into the left arm and shortness of breath.

“A heart attack usually occurs when a blockage in a coronary artery, which supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients, severely restricts or cuts off the blood supply to a region of the heart,” explains The Merck Manual of Medical Information.

“If the supply is cut off or greatly reduced for more than a few minutes, heart tissue dies.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the plaques can rupture during a heart attack and spill cholesterol and other substances into the bloodstream. “A blood clot forms at the site of the rupture,” it says. “If large enough, the clot can completely block the �low of blood through the coronary artery.”

Stroke If blood clots happen in the brain, the �irst symptom may be a stroke or a transient ischemic attack, the World Heart Federation (WHF) says. “The symptoms of these vary in degrees but include loss of vision in one �ield, facial weakness, speech impairment, dif�iculty understanding others, headache, loss of coordination.”

Stroke is the second leading

cause of death in the Philippines after heart attack. Around the world, the statistics on the prevalence of stroke is staggering.

“One in six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime,” deplores Dr. Romulo Esagunde, a neurosurgeon and board member of the Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Clinical Medicine Inc. “Every six seconds, stroke kills someone; and every other second, stroke attacks a person regardless of age or gender.”

There are two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. “Ischemic strokes happen when a blood clot (thrombus) or a fatty deposit blocks an artery supplying blood to the brain,” the US-based WHF points out.

“About 80 percent of strokes are ischemic – due to a blocked artery,” explains The Merck Manual of Medical Information. “Brain cells, thus deprived of their blood supply, do nt receive enough oxygen and glucose (a sugar) which are carried by blood.”

The other 20 percent of strokes are hemorrhagic – due to bleeding in or around the brain.

“In this type of stroke, a blood vessel ruptures, interfering with normal blood �low and allowing blood to leak into brain tissue,” the Merck manual explains.

“Blood that comes into direct contact with brain tissue irritates the tissue and can cause scarring, leading to seizures.”

The most common cause of hemorrhagic stroke is high blood pressure (hypertension). “Too much pressure can cause the bursting of a vessel – especially if that vessel has been weakened by age and the excess pressure of hypertension,” writes Dr. Julian Whitaker, author of Reversing Hypertension. “Hypertension also contributes to atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, the narrowing and stiffening of the arteries that increases the likelihood of blood clots cutting off blood supply. When either of these scenarios occurs in an artery in the brain, the result is a stroke.”

Aside from hypertension, other conditions that can lead to the development of blood clots inside the body are atherosclerosis and some other blood problems. “Thrombosis is the name given to the formation of blood clots,” the WHF says.

Drug war against blood clots Because blood clots can cause so much internal havoc, re-

searchers are constantly looking for ways to prevent platelets from sticking together and to interrupt the clotting cascade at one or several of its stages. According to the Harvard University’s Medical School, there are two classes of drugs that accomplish those objectives: antiplatelets and anticoagulants, respectively. Both are frequently (but not accurately) called blood thinners.

“Clot-busting drugs (thrombolytics) are used in emergency situations to quickly dissolve problematic clots,” the Harvard University explains in its website.

“They are laboratory formula-

tions of chemicals the body produces naturally to dissolve clots, and they’re usually delivered directly into a vein under close medical supervision.”

There are also anticlotting medications — except for a few injectable ones — that are available in pill form. “Remember that any one of these anticlotting drugs — even aspirin — can cause excessive bleeding, so if you are taking one, explicitly follow instructions for use and watch for signs of abnormal bleeding, such as bruising and swelling (without physical injury) or blood in the stool,” the university reminds.

avao has always been proudly bannered as a region that is not visited by storm. For decades, this was the foremost perception among pioneers who had survived the war without the predictable typhoons that ravage the Visayas and Luzon areas on a regular basis.

But this oral history is not entirely correct. For instance, on 27 November 1912, Monkayo, a town under Compostela Valley Province, was devastated by a super typhoon that entered Mindanao via the northern sector of Baganga and south of Cateel, in Davao Oriental, before crossing Agusan River between Jativa (now part of Monkayo) and Compostela town.

Fr. Bernardino Llobera, a Jesuit missionary at Caraga, wrote about the storm in detail, saying by midday of 27 November, the rain gently fell with winds from the north but became intense late in the afternoon just as the steamer Bolinao anchored in Caraga Bay started to sound its whistle. He wrote: “The barometer had then fallen to 751 millimeters. The rain continued to fall, and at about 10 p.m. the wind suddenly changed… and began to blow more strongly every minute.

There is no survey being conducted yet in the Philippines on this but the Pew Research Center, which describes itself as a non-partisan “fact tank,” made a survey in 40 countries among 45,435 respondents in 2015.

The survey, designed to measure perceptions of international threats, considered climate change as the “top concern” by people around the world. “However, Americans, Europeans and Middle Easterners most frequently cite ISIS as the top threat among international issues,” the survey said.

“People in 19 of 40 nations surveyed cite climate change as their biggest worry, making it the most widespread concern of any issue in the survey,” wrote Thalf Deen of the Inter Press Service (IPS). “A median of 61 percent of Latin Americans say they are very concerned about climate change, the highest share of any region.”

Dr. Michael Dorsey, a member of the Club of Rome and an expert on global governance and sustainability, was quoted as saying: “If publics fear climate change more than terrorism, we might have to rethink collective and regulatory approaches for entities responsible for carbon pollution.

“If we accept the fact that carbon pollution drives both human mortality and morbidity, compromises ecosystems, and threatens society, then institutions and firms that produce carbon pollution, as well as those who opt to finance carbon polluters are akin to those who work with entities

Not only that. The coconut palms were twisted, the branches of trees torn off and thrown all around. This continued until dawn when the effects of the storm became visible on all sides. The priest observed that part of the convent’s roof was torn off, the courthouse was without covering, and dozens of houses ravaged.

There was a swath of devastation everywhere.

Fr. Llobera further reported: “The convent at Manay had its roof entirely removed and the church destroyed along with several neighborhood houses. In Santa Fe, the church, courthouse, and more houses collapsed.

At Manurigao and Baculin the story was no different. Baganga was completely destroyed, while �ive houses remained standing in Cateel.”

Fr. Cristobal Sastre, another Jesuit missionary who was in Agusan when the disaster struck, wrote the “typhoon destroyed all the towns of the higher Agusan, especially those between Jativa and Compostela. The two walls of vegetation on each side of river that shut in the view completely have entirely disappeared.

A century later, on 04 December 2012, to be exact, another super howler ravaged the same region, �lattening the towns of Monkayo, New Bataan, Montevista, Maragusan, and Compostela, in Compostela Valley, and the municipalities of Boston, Caraga, Cateel, and Baganga, in Davao Oriental. Up that time, the typhoon, known locally as Pablo (‘Bopha’ in international maps) was the strongest tropical storm ever recorded anywhere on the planet.

Historically, there was another pre-war super typhoon that nearly wiped out all the abaca plantations of Davao; this occurred in on 22-23 November 1928. The American Chamber Of Commerce Journal, in its December, 1929 issue, carried a belated report on this tragic event: “A week ago several of the Manila daily papers carried articles describing a severe storm in Davao that had destroyed some 2,000,000 hemp plants. The dealers and speculators immediately endeavored to get prices up on the strength of this information and were greatly disappointed when it developed that the storm described happened… not in November 1929.”

In other newspaper accounts of the day, the typhoon was reported to have actually �lattened around 2,000 hectares of abaca. This occurred that same year the storm surge from Okeechobee Hurricane, a powerful Atlantic howler, struck the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Florida, USA.

“I refer to climate change, which could bring drought and long dry spells affecting food production in Mindanao, given the fact Mindanao is unusually warming,” he added. “I ask all agencies involved in food production to look into this and act accordingly.”

Hearing those words from the president, Senator Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, commented: “I welcome the President’s mention of climate change and the urgency of implementing measures to mitigate its impacts. Climate action should be a part of the change agenda. More importantly, we should not merely react to the impacts of climate change. We should reduce risks.

Doing so entails a shift in the way we pursue development. We should shun the development that destroys our environment.”

It was Dr. James E. Hansen of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration who first raised the problem of climate change. In 1988, he told an American Senate hearing that the greenhouse

effect “is changing our climate now.”

The greenhouse effect is a natural warming process. During the Climate Change Media Workshop three years ago in Davao City, Dr. Rosa T. Perez said that carbon dioxide and certain other gases are always present in the atmosphere. These gases create a warming effect that has some similarity to the warming inside a greenhouse, hence the name “greenhouse effect.”

Here’s what happens: “Visible sunlight passes through the atmosphere without being absorbed; some are back-scattered.

Some of the sunlight striking the earth is absorbed and converted to heat, which warms the surface. The surface emits heat to the atmosphere, where some of it is absorbed by greenhouse gases and re-emitted toward the surface. Some of the heat

According to Dr. Perez, human activities that emit additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere increase the amount of heat that gets absorbed before escaping to space, thus enhancing the greenhouse effect and amplifying the warming of the earth.

“Although the Earth’s climate has changed many times throughout its history, the rapid warming seen today cannot be explained by natural processes alone,” points out Dr. Perez, who has a PhD in Meteorology from the University of the Philippines.

“Climate change is very simple,” noted Dr. Robert Watson, IPCC Chairman. “We are increasing emissions of greenhouse gases and thus their concentrations in the atmosphere are going up. As these concentrations increase, the temperature of the earth rises.”

Aside from carbon dioxide, the following are also considered greenhouse gases: water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide.

There are also those man-made gases generated during industrial processes like sulfur hexaflouride, hydrofluorocarbons, and perfluorocarbons.

“Our lifestyle has led to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,”

The natural calamity, attributed by amateur weather observers to the sharp mountain drop in regions near the Davao Gulf, in particular the wind from Marapangi, in Toril district, which moves towards the northern sector, �lattened close to 2,000 hectares of banana plants, the equivalent of roughly 3,200,000 banana trees at 1,600 suckers per hectare.

The estate affected by this weather disturbance did not include the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DAPECOL) under a joint venture agreement with TADECO since 1969.

The disaster, which resulted in �inancial debacle, nearly forced the Don Antonio O. Floirendo �irm to close shop.

What saved the day for Tadeco was a loan sourced from its sister company, the Davao Motor Sales (DAMOSA).

Dr. Perez says that the current carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is about 40% more than pre-industrial levels.

“We are emitting a lot of carbon dioxide faster than the Earth can absorb any excess,” she deplores.

As a country vulnerable to climate change, we need to do something about it now.

As Legarda said: “While adaptation is our priority since we are highly vulnerable to climate risks, we should also strive to mitigate or reduce our carbon emissions as part of our aim to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“Our efforts will be to mitigate as we adapt: mitigation as a function of adaptation. For instance, as we plant and rehabilitate our forests to increase our carbon sink, we also help reduce disaster risks, since forests serve as natural buffer against landslides, storm surge and tsunami. We should also start transitioning to a low carbon economy not only by promoting renewable energy sources but also through energy conservation,” she said

of delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Philippines, acknowledged the continuing dif�iculties faced by evacuees whether they are with relatives or in evacuation centers.

Porchet particularly pointed to the “critical situation” faced by evacuee families and their hosts.

“They are also running out of means. They have been very generous, they have shown a lot of solidarity, but as the situation continues, they are getting desperate,” Porchet said.

“Those who are living in those situations, they are desperate to be able to go home,” he added.

Drieza Lininding, secretary general of the Bangsamoro National Movement for Peace and Development, said the Maranaos would like to settle back to areas of the city which government forces have cleared of militants’ presence.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon said that the militants now only control 49 hectares of territory straddling three barangays.

Pimentel and Alvarez during their opening speeches on the Second Regular Session of the 17th Congress, mentioned the BBL on the latter part of their calls for passage of priority bills.

But Duterte’s three short paragraphs made no mention of the urgency of the BBL’s passage. It only dwelt on what is said to be an “inclusive” peace process.

“In our sustained effort to achieve just and lasting peace for a uni�ied nation, we are pursuing an inclusive peace process, promoting the participation of all stakeholders, including those in con�lict-affected areas,” the President said.

“We took steps to promote inclusiveness in the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) by expanding its membership through Executive Order No. 8 which I signed in November last year,” he added.

The third and last paragraph Duterte noted that in “giving representation to Indigenous Peoples, women, the sultanates, and other key stakeholders in the drafting of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, we ensure a Bangsamoro government that truly re�lects the aspirations of our Muslim brothers and sisters as well as our indigenous brethren.”

At the opening of the Second Regular Session of the 17th Congress at the Senate on Monday morning, Pimentel cited six major measures they should give priority to, the �ifth and sixth being BBL and federalism.

First on his list was the tax reform measure, strengthening the anti-terrorism law, national ID system, universal health care and “we will pursue a path to lasting peace in Mindanao by addressing the valid concerns of our Muslim brothers and sisters through the Bangsamoro Basic Law.” Pimentel also called on the

Senate to “empower our regions to determine their development plans, their overall direction, through the shift to Federalism.”

Speaker Alvarez in his speech at the House also on Monday morning cited at least eight other legislative measures before saying, “last but not the least,” the need to “concentrate our efforts in passing two legislative measures that hold the key to lasting peace and prosperity for our country — BBL and federalism.

He said the draft BBL had been submitted the President “and will soon be on its way into our chambers.”

The Bangsamoro law, he said, “will be the basis for creating a homeland for our Bangsamoro brothers and sisters.”

The second legislative measure Alvarez refered to was to “exert additional effort in paving the way for the shift from a unitary to a federal form of government” to address “the structural defects that have hampered our national strategy in pursuit of peace, prosperity, and progress.”

He noted that the youngest staff member in the House of Representatives works in his of�ice and wonders what changes and challenges will her generation meet and overcome, among them, “will her generation still have to deal with �ighting for elusive peace and missing out on progress and development should we fail to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law and – in addition to that – fail to shift our form of government from unitary to federal? I usually bring white sneakers and a nude pair of sandals. That’s it. They have to be comfortable or else I won’t bring them.

Depends on the location I’m going to--if it’s a cold place, I usually wear like a basic pair of wide leg pants, a turtle neck tee, and pair these with a nice warm coat in a bright color. I wear my favorite knee high boots with these if it’s super cold, or just white sneakers if it’s like aircon weather. If I’m going to a warm place, like a beach it’s a one-piece swimsuit, a long cover-up, nice earrings, and comfy colorful sandals. I bring a pair of shorts if I need to go to the market or walk around the city.

ith the production of Tesla’s mass-market Model 3 now underway, electric cars are about to hit the mainstream.

For people driving EVs, it means a raft of changes: plugging in at night instead of hitting the gas station, keeping an eye on a battery meter instead of a fuel gauge, and most importantly, a change in the way they drive.

To get the maximum bene�it out of driving an electric car, the accelerator (you can’t call it a gas pedal anymore!) controls both the speeding up and slowing down. Pressing the pedal makes the car go, as usual, but lifting your foot makes the car slow down, hard, not coast.

It’s a quirk that takes some getting used to. At �irst, it can feel like the parking brake has been accidentally left on. But most drivers eventually prefer it because it makes inching forward in traf�ic much easier than swapping your foot back and forth between pedals.

In a conventional car, brake pads clamp onto a metal disc, with friction converting the kinetic energy of a speeding car into wasted heat.

But when electric cars slow down, the electric motor runs as a generator, recovering some of that previously wasted energy to top up the battery.

Depending on how much regeneration the software engineers allow when designing the car, the

force can be powerful enough to slow the car most of the way to zero, meaning drivers only need to use the brake pedal to come to a full stop.

Most importantly, energy is recaptured rather than wasted, so the range in electric cars is improved.

A boost in the number of electric cars on the roads is going to make it much more common though, and mean a modern generation of drivers is going to have to forget what they know about pedals and learn a new way to stop.

Electric cars now run on one pedal With the production of Tesla’s mass-market Model 3 now underway, electric cars are about to hit the mainstream.

For people driving EVs, it means a raft of changes: plugging in at night instead of hitting the gas station, keeping an eye on a battery meter instead of a fuel gauge, and most importantly, a change in the way they drive.

To get the maximum bene�it out of driving an electric car, the accelerator (you can’t call it a gas pedal anymore!) controls both the speeding up and slowing down. Pressing the pedal makes the car go, as usual, but lifting your foot makes the car slow down, hard, not coast.

It’s a quirk that takes some getting used to. At �irst, it can feel like the parking brake has been accidentally left on. But most drivers eventually prefer it because it makes inching forward in traf�ic much easier than swapping your foot back and forth between pedals.

In a conventional car, brake pads clamp onto a metal disc, with friction converting the kinetic energy of a speeding car into wasted heat.

But when electric cars slow down, the electric motor runs as a generator, recovering some of that previously wasted energy to top up the battery.

Duterte to SC: Stop issuing TROs

resident Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday called on the Supreme Court to look into the matter of the issuance of a temporary restraining order so as not to delay on government projects and programs.

“TRO has become the bane of our (government) projects,” Duterte said in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“It’s time we put an end to practice of some parties resorting in technicalities in our laws preventing the government from doing its mandate,” the Chief

Executive said.

“I will not attribute anything, Maam, to the Supreme Court. Maybe I am at fault so, I am sorry,” Duterte said as he looks to Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who was present in the SONA. Dutere also cited the SC’s TRO hindering the government’s full implementation of the Reproductive Health Law as he pointed out that the measure is already a law that has to be implemented.

“I am not for abortion, I am not for birth control, but certainly I am for giving of freedom

to Filipino families to decide,” he said adding that the subdermal implants purchased by the government will already expire next month.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court in a resolution issued last May, 2017 said that the government can proceed with the implementation of programs under the RH Law because the injunction order issued was not for the entire family planning supplies.

Gov’t forces call on Maute to surrender

C

alls for the ISIS-inspired Maute Gropu to surrender echoed in this city’s con�lict zone on Monday.

“Surrender now! The government knows where you are hiding,” said a call aired through loudspeakers which can be heard among the ruins and gutted buildings.

“Your families are waiting for you,” it continued.

The taped broadcasts were aired in Meranaw, Tausug, Yakan and Maguindanao dialects that are spoken by Filipino Muslims.

The loudspeakers are placed in strategic areas along the battlefront in Marawi City.

Just below the loudspeakers, Philippine Marines of�icers, unmindful of its noise, bunched together studying a map on a table.

The Marines are receiving reports from the �ield on the location of the gunmen.

Staring at the map, an of�icer gave the coordinates to his men who were manning 81mm mortars nearby.

Mortars were then �ired at the supposed positions of the militants, a scene that has become familiar in the city in the past two months.

Pasia said the calls aired through loudspeakers costing some P8,000 each, worked during the 2013 Zamboanga standoff.

Countdown still on for vanishing wildlife

T

he Philippines, touted to be the Pear of the Orient Seas, maybe abundant of natural resources but these may soon be gone if Filipinos will not work together to save them from extinction.

“We have an abundance of natural resources. But all this wealth is at great risk,” said Senator Loren Legarda in a speech delivered during the First National Biodiversity Congress recently.

The Philippines is very fortunate to be one of the world’s megadiverse countries, and also the center of the center of biodiversity, as proven in various expeditions where scientists and researchers have been able to discover new and endemic species in the country.

Dr. Terry Gosliner, of the California Academy of Sciences, led an expedition on the Verde Island Passage – a strait that separates the islands of Luzon and Mindoro – in 2015 and discovered more than a hundred species that are likely new to science.

“The Philippines is jampacked with diverse and threatened species – it’s one of the most astounding regions of biodiversity on Earth,” media quoted Dr. Gosliner as saying in a press conference.

The following year, an expedition in the mountains of northeast Mindanao was done

by Dr. Rafe M. Brown of the University of Kansas’ Biodiversity Institute . The team discovered a total of 126 species, including 40 frogs, 49 lizards, 35 snakes, a freshwater turtle and a crocodile “The terrestrial biodiversity of the Philippines is amazing, and this part of Mindanao is the center of the center of that diversity,” commented Dr. Brown, a herpetologist who is interested in understanding evolutionary processes of diversi�ication in island archipelagos.

Facing extinction Unfortunately, these rich repositories of natural wealth are being threatened.

“Development activities, land degradation, overgrazing and deforestation, pollution,

over�ishing, hunting, land-use change, and the overuse of freshwater, have pushed ecosystems to the limit,” Legarda pointed out. “Our country has become one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots, with a large number of species threatened with extinction.”

In 2012, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) released the 48-page report, Communities in Nature: State of Protected Areas Management in the Philippines.

Since 1992, 113 have been declared through Presidential proclamations as protected areas under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS). However, only 13 protected areas have �inally proceeded to be legislated as such in the more than 20 years since the NIPAS Act was enacted.

Endangered ecosystems Although the country has been active in protecting its biological diversity, much has to be done. “Many scientists have expressed the concern that despite the signi�icant gains in protected areas management, the Philippines is still losing its remaining forest and coastal ecosystems at an alarming rate,” the DENR report said.

In 2010, it was reported the Philippines has 6.84 million hectares of total forest cover, or about 23 percent of the country’s total land area of 30 million hectares. An earlier study showed the country was losing an average of about 150,000 hectares of forest cover annually over the last 100 years.

The country’s coastal and marine resources are not spared. From its original area of approximately 450,000 hectares in 1918, the mangrove areas went down to 140,000 hectares in 1991. It decreased further in 1994 to 120,000 hectares.

In 2002, some of the top leading marine scientists ranked the country as the number one (according to the degree of threat) among the world’s top ten coral reef hotspots. The World Atlas of Coral Reefs, compiled by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), reported that

97 percent of reefs in the Philippines are under threat from destructive �ishing techniques, including cyanide poisoning, over-�ishing, or from deforestation and urbanization that result in harmful sediment spilling into the sea.

“At the rate our ecosystems are getting destroyed, many species may no longer be there when we need them,” deplored Samuel Peña�iel, who said those words when he was still the director of the DENR’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (now called as Biodiversity Management Bureau or BMB).

Tremendous wildlife resources According to the BMB, the country has the highest rate of discovery in the world in terms of wildlife species. The Philippines ranks �ifth in the number of plants species and maintains 5% of the world’s �lora and ranks fourth when it comes to endemic birds.

“The Philippines has tremendous wildlife resources,” wrote Jesus B. Alvarez Jr. in a 1981 position paper. “We have unique and beautiful birds which are in great demand, both here and abroad. We also have rare interesting mammals. Most outstanding are the tamaraw and the Philippine eagle which could be placed alongside the world’s �inest species.”

The Philippines is home to about 170,000 faunal species, most of which are insects and are mostly unidenti�ied, according to the environment department. Twelve thousand plant species and 960 animal species are found in the country’s forests. Of the identi�ied animal species, over 500 are birds and 167 are mammals.

Out of the 500 known coral species in worldwide, about 488 coral species in 78 genera are found in the Philippines. There are only about 50 species of seagrasses in the world. A total of 16 species can be found in the country, and this is the second highest diversity that exists in one country; only Western Australia has more – with 17 species. At least 2,000 �ish species are found in the Philippines.

Almost 100 mammal species are endemic to the Philip-

pines. In recent years, experts have discovered more than a dozen species of mammals in the country seen nowhere else on the planet.

“The number compares with other countries like Brazil,” noted Philippine fauna specialist Dr. Laurence Heaney of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. “But compare their sizes, for such a small area, the Philippine rockets ahead.”

Brazil has a total land area of 3,286,488 square kilometers while the Philippines has a total land area of only 115,800 square kilometers. On the other hand, Indonesia – another biodiversity-rich country – has a total land area of 741,101 square kilometers.

“Hottest of the hotspots” While its biodiversity is among the highest, the Philippines’ ecosystems are among the most threatened. In fact, the US National Cancer Institute lists the entire Philippine archipelago as among the �ive biogeographical areas in the world considered to be the “hottest of the hotspots,” a hot spot being an area whose high biodiversity is gravely threatened.

In 1990s, Dr. Seymour Sohmer of the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii concluded in a study that the Philippines has already lost 40% of its endemic �lora, including waling-waling. The Convention for International Trade of Endangered Species listed 46 wildlife species that were either rare, threatened or endangered. Included in the list were Philippine eagle, Philippine tarsier, and Cebu black shama.

“A few decades ago, the wildlife of the Philippines was notable for its abundance; now, it is notable for its variety; if the present trend of destruction continues, Philippine wildlife will be notable for its absence,”

commented Dr. Lee Talbot, who was once a member of the Southeast Asia Project on Wildlife Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Noted Filipino wildlife expert Dioscoro Rabor echoed the same sentiment. “It is about time that we, Filipinos, stop making ourselves internationally blind to the real status of our wildlife resources,” he said. “We should face the fact that our country is no longer rich in forests and consequently, of wildlife which used to be a normal component of our forests.”

The environment department cites deforestation, illegal trade, lack of political will, and negative attitude toward conservation as among the causes.

“Biodiversity loss is caused mainly by habitat destruction and wildlife trade.

The full force of the law must be applied on all wildlife smugglers, while treading the sustainable development path would help preserve species and natural habitats,” said Legarda.

Protecting biodiversity As such, Legarda urged the government to intensify efforts in protecting biodiversity by integrating biodiversity conservation into the country’s development policies and agenda, recognizing eco-tourism’s potential role in sustainable development.

“Protecting ecosystems -

which involves rehabilitating our forests, cleaning our rivers, and stopping pollution, among other actions, requires action by all sectors and stakeholders including the civil society, the academe and the private sector. Multidisciplinary approach is essential in developing integrated solutions to these challenges,” the staunch environmentalist senator stressed.

She lauded, however, the approval on third and �inal reading the proposed Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS), which she principally authored, during the International Day for Biological Diversity last May 22.

“The proposed ENIPAS Law will secure the remaining protected areas in the country through strengthening access to funding and prosecution of prohibited acts. I hope the House of Representatives would also pass their version of the bill so we can move forward in our efforts to conserve our degrading ecosystems and protect our precious biodiversity,” Legarda said.

Meanwhile, Del�in J. Ganapin, Jr., who used to be DENR undersecretary, shared this thought: “Conserving wildlife is an arduous task.

This cannot be accomplished by one or two government agencies alone. The continued existence of our wildlife rests on the support and cooperation of our people.”

Blatche last joined Gilas in the Seaba Cup in Manila and has since stayed in the US to be with

Libranza needed only two minutes and 35 seconds in the �irst round to stop Romulo Ramayan via a technical knockout and to take the vacant Minproba �lyweight title.

Libranza immediately unleashed his vicious leftright combinations that saw Ramayan turned his back after absorbing the powerful shots mostly on the head and face.

Astrolabio, on the other hand, scored a unanimous decision against a hard-�ighting Joe Tejones of the Wowie Lalanto Stable from Cagayan de Oro City to capture the vacant Minproba bantamweight crown.

attacking him in the �irst two rounds. But Astrolabio was able to defend himself and landed more punches against Tejones in the remaining rounds.

Judges Jaime Mata and Sabas Ponpon Jr. both scored it 98-91 while judge Romy Fordaliza saw it 9693 all in favor of Astrolabio, who remained unbeaten with nine straight wins and seven knockouts.

“We will apply all the lessons we gained from the Seagulls against other teams here in Osaka,” he said. “We will keep on working.

PH volleybelles begin 17-day Japan camp

HE Philippine women’s volleyball team checked into this bustling Japanese city Tuesday, armed with the burning desire to improve its game and bring the country back to international prominence.

It is the second leg of the National’s grueling 17-day training.

Cavs land former MVP Rose

OR the moment, the Cavaliers have one content, proven point guard.

Free agent Derrick Rose agreed on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time) to sign with Cleveland, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Rose, a former NBA MVP who has struggled with knee injuries, will get a one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum of $2.1 million, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the agreement.

The deal is expected to be �inalized and announced Tuesday.

Rose played for the New York Knicks last season and averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists. The 28-year-old Rose’s role with the Cavs is still to be determined. He could be used as a backup or even start depending on what the team does with All-Star Kyrie Irving, who recently asked for a trade.

Rose drew interest from other teams. He met with Cleveland’s front of�ice on Monday, when the team promoted Koby Altman to be its full-time general manger after he served as the interim GM since mid-June.

Rose just completed his eighth since being drafted �irst overall by Chicago in 2008. He was named the league’s MVP in 2011 while with the Bulls.

Rose sat out the entire 201213 season following knee surgery.

Because the Cavaliers are so far over the salary cap, they could only offer Rose a oneyear deal. But the possibility of playing alongside James, who can become a free agent next summer, and to contend for a title will offset any �inancial concerns for Rose.

anman Boxing Club dominated all its bouts against separate rivals to rule the Brawl at the Mall: Collision Course held Sunday night at Robinson’s Place in General Santos City.

Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) Youth super �lyweight champion Jade Bornea knocked out Nicardo Calamba in 2:25 of the second round to remain unbeaten with 8th straight wins and �ive knockouts.

Bornea �irst knocked down Calamba in the early second round with a right hook. Calamba, however, managed to stand up only to be �inally knocked out in a few seconds later.

The “Best Fight of the Night”, however, was the 6-rounder bout between bantamweights Ben Mananquil of Sanman and Kim Lindog of Wowie Lalanto Stable from Cagayan de Oro City.

Manangquil, who suffered a cut on his left eye due to an accidental head butt in the 4th round, landed more telling blows to win by the unanimous decision. Lindog, however, earned the respect and admiration of the huge crowd after showing his brave heart and never-say-die attitude during the exciting brawl.

Manangquil, who launched a non-stop left-right combination in the last 10 seconds of their �ight, improved his record to 14 wins with 3 knockouts against only one loss, while Lindog dropped to 5W-5L-1D, 4 KOs card.

“It was not really his (Lindog)

�ighting weight,” said Lindog’s manager Wowie Lalanto.

In the main event, Engelbert “Aguila” Moralde of Davao City used his quick jabs in scoring a majority decision against Gensan’s Jestoni Makiputin to snap out of a two-�ight slump.

Moralde, who is now 9-50 with 6 knockouts, previously suffered a technical knockout loss to Keita Kurihara in Tokyo, Japan. Makiputin also bowed to Moralde’s younger brother John Vincent Moralde in 2013 at the Magsaysay Park in Davao City.

In the other bouts, Jerwin Mama made a successful pro debut with a stunning �irst round stoppage over Roger Salaton in 1:14 of the 1st round. Mama bombarded Salaton with leftright combinations to score his �irst win as a pro boxer.

His twin brother Jayson Mama �irst turned pro with Sanman and now has a clean record of 6 wins and 2 knockouts with no loss or draw.

Mark Antonio pummeled to submission Elizer Ambon of Maasim in just 57 seconds of the �irst round while Dave Apolinario won by a UD over Rio Golipatan in the four rounders.
