HE staging of the 31st coordinated maritime patrol between Philippine and Indonesian naval forces is timely and may prevent foreign terrorists from sending reinforcements to the Maute Group through the porous Southern backdoor, Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) deputy commander BGen. Gilbert Gapay said.

During the opening of the 31st CORPAT PHILINDO at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Tuesday, Gapay said the joint activity would tighten security along the border of the two countries, known to be the gateway of foreign terrorists to Mindanao.

“There are foreign terrorists who have slipped into our country. They used our southern

backdoor and this border patrol would tighten the security there and somehow prevent further infiltration or incursion of foreign terrorists into our country,” said Gapay, who is also the Martial Law spokesperson for Eastmincom.

“They might, as we all know, they are trying to reinforce some Maute-ISIS terrorists there,” he said.

The Army official was referring to the ISIS-inspired Maute Group which has been fighting government forces in Marawi City since May 23.

He said the naval forces of the two countries also aim to address transnational crimes such as smuggling and piracy in the seas, aside from the threat of global terrorism.

“This shows that the threat of terrorism is a clear and present danger that needs to be addressed by each and every Filipinos,” the vice mayor said in a press statement on Tuesday.

Vice Mayor Paolo said the decision of the high court is also an affirmation President Duterte has the country’s welfare in mind when he imposed martial rule.

One Army sniper said he shot and presumably killed a sniper who was riding a motorcycle in one of Marawi’s empty streets.

Developer sued for violating zone law Mall built inside city residential area

EBU-BASED Taipan Development Inc. is facing charges for violation of Ordinance No. 0546, series of 2013, also known as the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance of Davao City.

The zoning ordinance board filed the charges on June 28 against the Cebu company for constructing its Gaisano Capitol mall in barangay Catalunan Pequiño, Davao City without securing a permit from the city government.

Zoning committee chief Roy Ryan Rigor said that the respondent did not secure a permit from their office and just proceeded with the construction without their knowledge.

“They have not secured our clearance at all,” he said.

“Besides, if they asked for one in our office we won’t give it to them since the location is a residential zone.”

Rigor said that since the location is under a residential

zone, the respondent must seek the approval of the city council for the reclassification of the area from a residential zone to a commercial zone.

Following the process, the management of the 2 storey mall should have asked the approval of the city council for a reclassification before they can get a clearance from the zoning office. However, the respondent allegedly bypassed all the processes and proceeded with the construction.

Without the zoning clearance, the respondent cannot also secure a building permit from the city building office.

“The City Engineer’s Office and our office issued a notice of violation to them when we found out about their case,” Rigor said.

He said that the mall was preparing for their grand opening but they stopped them from operating since they did not secure a permit

EPARTMENT of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said they needed a couple more weeks to determine whether or not they would recommend an extension of the implementation of Martial Law in Mindanao.

He made this statement during the sidelines of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting at the AFP Commissioned Officers’ Club in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City Tuesday.

“We will know in a couple of weeks time, after that we will make our recommendations (as) we are still studying the situation in Marawi, Lanao Del Sur and the rest of Mindanao,” Lorenzana said in Filipino.

President Rodrigo Duterte placed Mindanao under Martial Law in wake of the Maute Group attacks in Marawi City last May 23.

tion, Martial Law declaration in the Philippines is only good for two months unless extended by Congress.

DUCATION Secretary Leonor Briones has expressed great concern over recent incidents of violence against personnel of the Department of Education (DepEd), the latest of which was the attempt on the life of a high school principal from San Jose, Batangas on Tuesday morning.

In a statement, Briones said Emily Mallari, principal of Alitagtag National High School, was driving her car when unidentified persons on a motorcycle fired at her as she was passing Purok 4, Barangay Pinagtongulan, Lipa City.

She said that based on the

NBI to probe resurgence of NBP illegal drug trade

USTICE Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the reported resurgence of illegal drug trade at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntilupa City.

Aguirre issued Department Order No.457 dated July 4, 2017 directing NBI Director Dante Gierran to conduct a probe and case build-up on the resurgence of drug trade and if evidence is warrants, the NBI is also granted the authority to file the appropriate administrative and criminal cases against those responsible.

“We wanted to get to the bottom of the reported resurgence of the drug trade in the NBP. We acted after verifying raw information provided by concerned individuals. I have said it before and i will say it again, we shall be relentless in fighting and eradicating the drug menace.” Aguirre said in a

statement.

Pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act no. 10867 also known as the “National Bureau of Investigation Reorganization and Modernization Act” whereby sections four and five provide for the powers and functions and jurisdiction of the National Bureau of Investigation which authorizes the President of the secretary of Justice to direct the NBI to undertake investigation of any crime when public interest so requires.

Further, Gierran is required to submit a report to Aguirre on its current activities related to the implementation of such order.

Aguirre said he will order a probe on some members of Special Action Force (SAF) who may have been involved in the resurgence of illegal drug trade inside the NBP.

UREAU of Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente on Wednesday ordered its personnel to strictly enforce its policy declaring as off-limits to unauthorized persons its immigration areas in all international airports nationwide and prohibiting the giving of special treatment to passengers.

In a statement, Morente said he has instructed BI port operations division Marc Red Mariñas to relay the said directive to all BI personnel assigned and discipline those who defy the same.

Morente warned that BI employees should desist from escorting or facilitating arriving and departing passengers, either personally or via text messaging or phone calls, for the purpose of expediting the implementation of immigration procedures by officers in

the counters.

The BI chief also reiterated that only BI employees who are on duty, and those who have travel orders, are allowed to be present in or at the premises of any international port entry at any given time.

Morente issued the directive following reports claiming that a well-known businessman, who arrived Monday night from Thailand at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), was seen being escorted by a retired policeman.

HE government targets to issue a national ID system starting 2020 in a bid to further improve the delivery of services and ensure that recipients of state financial aids will securely receive it.

Finance Undersecretary Karl Chua said they target to properly identify the efficient way to have a national ID system within two years and initial holders are poor families who get financial aid from the government.

He said the Department of Budget and Management is considering a P2 billion bud-

get for this program under the proposed 2018 national budget alone while its 2019 funding has yet to be determined.

He said the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is being considered to be the implementing agency for this program, which he said will use biometrics and pictures as well as secured technology.

Issues about security will be ensured under this program, he stressed, citing that people do not question the government for getting their personal details and biometrics in the issuance of the

Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and the Social Security System (SSS) IDs. “So I think majority will be happy about it,” he told reporters after the Tax Reform Forum held Wednesday in EDSA Shang-ri La. With the first package of the proposed tax reform seen to be approved by Congress this year for implementation starting 2018, the government eyes to disburse about PHP2,400 a month for a year to about 10 million poor Filipino households to mitigate the impact of the increase in

excise tax on oil.

Chua said that since the national ID system is not yet in place next year the funds will be disbursed to the intended beneficiaries through the existing system being used under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which is through automated teller machine (ATM) cards issued by the Land Bank of the Philippines (Landbank).

EO No. 30 established the EICC, which will lead and coordinate national government efforts on matters relevant to the development of energy investments in the country, particularly Energy Projects of National Significance (EPNS).

Of the 75 foreigners, 45 of them started training last July 3 and they are expected to complete it on July 14. Meanwhile, the 30 other foreign students will be trained from July 10 to 21, according to TESDA Director General Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong.

For the first batch, the foreigners will be trained on courses such as Network System and Technical Support; Engineering Drawing Using Pro-Engineering and Home Appliance Maintenance. On the other hand, the second batch will learn about Fiber

Optic Technology and Mobile Maintenance and Smart Phones.

The training of foreigners from KSA was an offshoot to the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the government of KSA and TESDA in 2005.

Mamondiong said that up to 725 TVTC personnel have been given training and certification by TESDA since the inception of the program.

This year, TESDA is holding the training in partnership with MFI Polytechnic Institute and the Metals Industry Research Development Center (MIRDC) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

HE government should find out ways of supporting women’s participation in economically productive activities, particularly in running businesses, to increase opportunities for them, according to a study published by state think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies.

The study found that women in the Philippines still do most of the housework, resulting in minimal economic opportunities for them, despite being more empowered than women in other Asian countries.

The authors, PIDS Senior Research Fellow Connie

Bacuyan-Dacuyuy and Lawrence Dacuycuy, attributed this to deep-seated Filipino values that “women nurture and their comparative advantages are in housework,” while “men provide and their place is in the labor market.”

These put women in a relatively disadvantaged position, forcing them to face discrimination in the formal labor market.

With these, they underscored the need to support women’s participation in productive ventures, as they comprise 50 percent of the country’s population and “have an equal role to play in steering

3 Sulu execs charged for SALN violations

T

HE Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the filing of five counts of violation of Section 8 of Republic Act No. 6713, or the “Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees”, against then Sulu Vice Gov. Abdusakur Tan for failure to file his Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

Likewise, facing the same charges for two counts are Maimbung, Sulu Mayor Samier Abubakar Tan and for five counts Lugus, Sulu Mayor AlZhudurie Asmadun.

Records from the Ombudsman showed that then Vice Gov. Tan failed to file his SALN from 2007 to 2011.

Meanwhile, Samier failed to file his SALN for 2010 and

2011, and Asmadun did not file any SALN from 2010 to 2014.

In its resolution, the Ombudsman said that “Section 8 of R.A. No. 6713 clearly provides that regional and local officials and employees shall file their SALNs with the Office of the Deputy Ombudsman in their respective regions.”

“Respondents, as local elective officials, have the obligation to submit, or at least to make sure that their SALNs are submitted. It is imperative that every public official or government employee must make and submit a complete disclosure of his assets, liabilities and net worth in order to suppress any questionable accumulation of wealth,” it added. Probe on DepEd official’s slay in Zambo ordered

DUCATION Secretary Leonor Briones on Tuesday ordered an investigation on the killing of a newly installed official of the Department of Education’s office in Zamboanga del Sur. In a statement, Briones also condemned the slaying of schools division superintendent Marcom Borongan, who was gunned down at the Teacher’s Center in San Jose Heights in Pagadian City during a thanksgiving and turnover ceremony on Monday evening.

“We, at DepEd, condemn all forms of violence, especially as they occur in schools.

We maintain that schools are zones of peace where the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and personnel are of utmost importance,” she said.

“The Department also offers its sincere condolences to the family of SDS Borongan.

We are one with them in this

time of bereavement.”

Sources said Briones has instructed DepEd’s local officials and staff to investigate the matter and to work closely with police authorities.

Briones has also asked DepEd-Region 9 director Isabelita Borres to monitor the developments on the case and ordered the release of monetary benefits.

She said police authorities have also called on the public to prudently identify and arrest the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

“At this crucial time, we enjoin everyone to help safeguard peace and order in our communities. As in other similar incidents, we will work hand in hand with our local officials and law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of our personnel and to maintain peaceful communities for our learners,” she said.

P800-M needed for rebuilding of Marawi schools — Briones

EPARTMENT of Education Secretary Leonor Briones said it will cost around P800 million to rebuild 15 schools in Marawi City, which is affected by the clash between government troops and Maute terror group.

She added that funding requirement could reach up to P2.3 billion if the government will be rebuilding all

132 schools in Marawi.

Since the incident in Marawi is still ongoing, the affected students need temporary learning spaces, furniture and fixtures, books, and laboratory equipment.

ARMM opens P139-M tourism infra projects T

OURISTS visiting this southernmost province will be surprised of the new infrastructures in the two most iconic tourist destination sites -- the Sheik Karim-ul Makdum mosque and the majestic Bud Bongao Peak.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov. Mujiv Hataman led the inauguration on Monday of the PHP80 million in the town of Simunul that included improvement of the access road, Sheik Makdum Cultural Center, and a welcome arc fashioned with a big Quran.

“It is but fitting to im-

prove this area not only for tourism but most importantly to value the place because this is where Islam was introduced to the Philippines,” Hataman said.

The Sheik Karim-ul Makdum is located in Barangay Tubig Indangan, Simunul, a fourth class municipality.

Islam, through Arab merchant Sheik Makdum, was introduced in the country in 1380.

Simunul Mayor Ahmad Abdurrahman said in an interview that they have been receiving a steady visit of Muslims across the country.

“What we are doing right

now is to train our communities on how to handle tourists. The good thing about tourism economy is that it trickles the benefits down to the communities,” Abdurahman said.

Stable inflation to continue for rest of 2017

HE National Economic and Development Authority projects the moderate inflation rate registered in the first six months of 2017 to continue for the rest of the year.

This is following a report released by NEDA-attached agency Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) stating that headline inflation further slowed to 2.8 percent in June 2017 from 3.1 percent in May. This is lower than market expectations of 3 percent, and within the government’s target of 2–4 percent.

Core inflation, which excludes select volatile food and energy prices, also eased to 2.6 percent in June 2017 from 2.9 percent, reflecting the general price stability across goods and services.

Also, slower price adjustments in both food and non-food commodities contributed to the easing of inflation in June 2017.

For food and non-alcoholic beverages, inflation slowed to 3.5 percent in June from 3.8 per-

cent the previous month.

Likewise, non-food inflation slowed to 2 percent in June 2017 from 2.5 percent in May. This follows the significantly slower year-on-year increase in domestic petrol prices during the period, particularly unleaded gasoline (5.1 percent from 9.9 percent), diesel (5.3 percent from 13.6 percent), and kerosene (3.0 percent from 9.6 percent).

NEDA Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and Undersecretary for Policy and Planning Rosemarie Edillon said that keeping inflation stable strengthens prospects of stronger domestic economic activity in the near-term.

“The significant decline in the probability of extreme weather disturbances due to El Niňo and La Niňa until the end of 2017 bodes well for agricultural production and commodity prices moving forward,” Edillon said.

She added however that government should take advantage of good weather conditions

to accelerate the implementation of climate change adaptation measures. “Among the crucial ones are investing in infrastructure like catchment basins, advance atmospheric moisture extraction, and promoting water-savingtechnology. Rehabilitation of damaged irrigation systems and periodic maintenance will also ensure disaster and climate resiliency of the agriculture sector,” she said.

Despite having stable inflation levels, Edillon said possible risks still have to be considered.

«On the external front, domestic prices may be affected as global financial market conditions adjust in response to the faster monetary policy normalization in the United States,” Edillon said.

She added that, domestically, the transitory impact of the proposed Comprehensive Tax Reform Program (CTRP) could push up inflation once implemented.

According to Magnolia Uy, DTI Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Geneva (PTIC-Geneva), the event allowed for the member countries to highlight ITA’s role of

providing households and domestic businesses access to more affordable and higher-quality Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) through tariffs elimination on hundreds of ICT products.

The Philippines, as one of the 82 signatories of ITA, has benefited from the initial ITA signed in 1996 and its expansion of list in 2015. According to the Philippines’ chief ITA negotiator and Board of Investment Governor Lucita Reyes, the country’s ITA membership helped lower prices for key ICT hardware inputs that the BPO industry depends upon. At present, the country’s ICT services exports

account for roughly 70% of total services exports while the ICT goods exports account for more than 35% of total exported goods.

In terms of ICT goods exports, Lachica added that the Philippine semiconductor and electronics industry continues to grow at a steady rate, ranking as the 17th largest exporter of ICT products in the world valued at approximately USD 24 billion (out of USD 29 billion total electronics exports).

Insulting the institution

Y calling his colleagues in the Senate as “lapdogs” of the President, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV has absolutely gone overboard.

The opposition Senator made his sweeping comment out of his sheer hate for the administration of President Duterte. He called his fellow lawmakers in the Senate a rubber stamp of the President. The scathing comment is not only disrespectful to his colleagues but more importantly offensive to the very institution he represents.

Sen. Trillanes must have been so consumed by his dislike of the current leadership but he cannot go beyond the bounds of his emotions to disrespect the Senate itself as he is duty-bound to protect its integrity by the sanctity of the oath he pledged before assuming his office.

Some of his fellow Senators like Sen. JV Ejercity and Sen. Tito Sotto think the institution, not just them as individuals, deserve an apology from Sen. Trillanes.

Sen. Ejercito even went to the extent to cancel any plans of filing an ethics complaint against his colleague for calling the Senate ‘lapdogs’ of the Duterte administration if he says sorry.

over but he maintained he will not demand it from the former Naval officer who staged two foiled coup attempts against the admministration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Sen. Trillanes cannot be made to believe that by acquiescing to some of the policies of the President, his colleagues are already beholden to the chief executive. In the same manner, Sen. Trillanes cannot also force his colleagues to go by his views on issues relative to the policies of President Duterte.

It is foolish, if not ignorant, of Sen. Trillanes to conclude things this way.

The Senate is a dynamic institution of individuals with independent beliefs and views. That is the beauty of democracy--to have contrasting ideas argue on matters at hand guided by parliamentary rules.

The Senate deserves no less than simple apology from Sen. Trillanes. He must come to his senses and show remorse over his statements. He must learn to conduct himself accordingly and not get too much engulfed by his emotions.

Afterall, Sen. Trilannes was elected by the people for the public’s general interest and not his. He must listen to the pulse of the public, not to his personal prejudice.

As 2016 rolled in, they all weighed their bets on Manila’s finest presidentiables. They watched as these wannabes and their running mates filed their certificates of candidacy before the deadline- sans Duterte, as he would make a precedent setting substitution after the deadline courtesy of Bg. Captain Martin Dino.

His campaign roared to a not so impressive start, falling to 10% in initial surveys after the cusswords interpreted against Pope Francis. But as the presidential debates proceeded, his survey

innocently picking out, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

Just as when the mother was going up the stage, Paderewski appeared and quickly moved to the keyboard. “Don’t quit. Keep playing,” he whispered to the little boy.

Leaning over, the master reached down with his left hand and started filling in a bass part.

Soon, his right arm reached around the other side, encircling the child, to add a running obbligato.

Together, the master and the young novice held the crowd spellbound.

Reading the story reminded me the words of Baroness Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke, a Danish author who wrote works in Danish and English. However, she is best known under her pen names Isak Dinesen.

“When you have a great and difficult task, something perhaps almost impossible, if you only work a little at a time, every day a little, suddenly the work will finish itself,” wrote the famous author of “Out of Africa” and “The Immortal Story.”

Arroyo eyes creation of transport security body to address terrorism F

ORMER President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is pushing for the creation of a body that will improve the transportation security of the country to fight the scourge of terrorism.

In a statement on Wednesday, Arroyo said it is high time to create an independent transportation security office that will secure all modes of transportation in the Philippines as a counterterrorism effort both nationally and internationally.

No. 5092, or the Philippine Transportation Security Act of 2017, which seeks the transformation of the Office of the Transportation Security (OTS) under the Department of Transportation into the National Transportation Security Regulatory Commission (NTSRC).

“An independent and single authority performing oversight function the transportation security becomes essential given the network characteristics of international and domestic travel and the consequent accountability

challenges that exist in the transportation sector,” she said.

2 senators keen to back extension of martial law

WO senators on Wednesday said they are inclined to support the possible extension of martial law in Mindanao but are hopeful that it will be limited in scope.

In a Kapihan press conference, Senate Majority Vicente Sotto III said that while he agreed martial law

should be extended, he believed it should be limited to Lanao del Sur and not the entire Mindanao.

He said Pres. Duterte can re-declare martial law on July 23, when the declaration lapses.

However, he said that the Senate should first hold a meeting and be briefed by

national security officials on updates to the situation in Marawi City.

Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito, in a separate press conference, said that he is also “inclined” to support an extension as long as it is “not too long” and that they can “crush the Maute group in the period they are ask-

ing for.”

He said that he sees a month or two as an ideal extension.

“If they can guarantee that they can finish operations in a month or two we can grant it. I’m inclined to vote for it,” Ejercito said.

He said that he understood the situation of the

Maranaos noting that the general sentiment is that they are for martial law and wondered why “people from Metro Manila” were against it.

Moreover, he said that he understood how difficult it was for the military to contain and identify the rebels given the terrain of

Mindanao.

Why should you listen to music?

“M

USIC is a fundamental attribute of the human species,” Harvard Medical School once said.

“Virtually all cultures, from the most primitive to the most advanced, make music.

It’s been true through history, and it’s true throughout an individual’s lifespan. In tune or not, we humans sing and hum; in time or not, we clap and sway; in step or not, we dance and bounce.”

“If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week,” English naturalist, geologist and biologist Charles Darwin admitted. German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein also bared: “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician.” It’s no wonder why Jimi Hendrix called music as his “religion.”

Thousands of years ago, Greek philosopher Plato had already pointed out the importance of music. “Music is a moral law,” he penned. “It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”

Aside from lifting your spirits, music also works as medicine for the soul and body. Several scientific studies have proven this. “There are few things that stimulate the brain the way music does,” one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist said. “If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening or playing music is a great tool. It provides a total brain workout.”

Let’s take a closer look at some of the health benefits you get from listening to music: Music makes you happier: William James once said: “I don’t sing because I’m happy; I’m happy because I sing.” Michelle Millis Chappel, in a website, www. lifehack.org, wrote: “Research proves that when you listen to music you like, your brain releases dopamine, a ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter.”

Chappel cited a study conducted by Valorie Salimpoor, an Australian neuroscientist at McGill University.

She injected eight music-lovers a radioactive substance that binds to dopamine receptors after they listened to their favorite music. It was found out that large amounts of dopamine were released.

Another study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, suggested that listening to hip-hop music may help individuals to understand mental disorders – but that’s another story.

Music lowers stress and improves health: Studies have shown that stress causes 60% of man’s illnesses and disease. One good thing about listening to music is

that it decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress.

“One study showed that if people actively participated in making music by playing various percussion instruments and singing, their immune system was boosted even more than if they passively listened,” Chappel wrote.

In 2009, Heart and Lung published a study that analyzed the effect of music intervention in the stress response to cardiac surgery and found that it helps reduce stress.

Music helps you sleep better: If you have problem falling asleep, why don’t you listen to music? Chappel wrote: “A study showed that students who listened to relaxing classical music for 45 minutes before turning in slept significantly better than students who listened to an audiobook or did nothing different from their noc-

Thomas Hardy once said: “There’s a friendly tie of some sort between music and eating.”

Research at Georgia Tech University showed

It cited a study conducted in 2006 and published in Ergonomics. Fast, loud music, the study said, might be played to enhance optimal exercising on a treadmill until you reach exhaustion levels.

Music relieves symptoms of depression: When you’re down and out, the best you can do is listen to music. “Research suggests the kind of music matters: Classical and meditative seem to be particularly uplifting, whereas heavy metal and techno can actually make depressive symptoms worse,” Christ noted.

Music soothes and relaxes your blood vessels: “Listening to their favorite music for 30 minutes a day improved blood vessel health in heart disease patients,” wrote Lauren Gelman in Reader’s Digest.

She based that statement from a study conducted in 2013 by Dutch researchers.

“Patients who cued up tunes while they exercised experienced the greatest cardiovascular benefits,” Gelman wrote. “Hearing music increased production of nitric oxide, a gas that helps dilate blood vessels, keeping them healthy and flexible.”

Music helps Alzheimer’s patients remember: British neurologist, naturalist, historian of science, and author Dr. Oliver Sacks once said: “The past, which is not recoverable in any other way, is embedded, as if in amber, in the music, and people can regain a sense of identity.”

According to Dr. Lauren Mosqueda, director of Geriatrics at the University

of California at the Irvine School of Medicine, music affects so many areas of the brain that it stimulates pathways that may still be healthy.

“One in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, so odds are you know someone who has it,” Chappel wrote. “To connect with loved ones who suffer from age-related dementia, try playing some of their best-loved music.”

Music improves cognitive performance: More often than not, movies provide background music, especially those kilig moments. In like manner, background music may enhance performance on cognitive tasks.

“One older study found that listening to music allowed test takers to complete more questions in the time allotted, and get more answers right,” Christ explained. “More recent research suggests that whether or not music improve cognitive function depends on whether the music first improves a person’s emotional state.”

Music ease recovery in stroke patients: Many people wrongly believe that strokes afflict only the elderly, but the fact is they can occur at any age. Researchers in Finland found out that when stroke patients listened to music for two hours a day, their verbal memory and attention improved. In addition, they had a more positive mood compared to patients who didn’t listen to audio books.

Gilbert Gapay said.

During the opening of the 31st CORPAT PHILINDO at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Tuesday, Gapay said the joint activity would tighten security along the border of the two countries, known to be the gateway of foreign terrorists to Mindanao.

“There are foreign terrorists who have slipped into our country. They used our southern

backdoor and this border patrol would tighten the security there and somehow prevent further infiltration or incursion of foreign terrorists into our country,” said Gapay, who is also the Martial Law spokesperson for Eastmincom.

“They might, as we all know, they are trying to reinforce some Maute-ISIS terrorists there,” he said.

The Army official was referring to the ISIS-inspired Maute Group which has been fighting government forces in Marawi City since May 23.

He said the naval forces of the two countries also aim to address transnational crimes such as smuggling and piracy in the seas, aside from the threat of global terrorism.
