ITH the recent burning incidents of business establishments in Mindanao, the police have alerted business owners in Davao City to be vigilant in order to avoid attacks by lawless armed groups.

Police Regional Office XI Spokesperson Andrea Dela Cerna said that security forces in Mindanao have height-

ened their level of alertness in view of the attacks staged against Lapanday Foods Corporation in Barangay Tigatto, Davao City and the Mil-Oro Mining Corporation in Mati City where some of their facilities and equipment were burned.

“Our regional director has instructed our unit commanders to be more aggres-

sive in securing our areas.

New lead unearthed in woman’s killing

P

OLICE investigators have been able to establish the name of one of the suspects behind the murder of a woman inside an inn along San Pedro St., Davao City Tuesday morning.

However, according to Chief Ramil Macarampat of San Pedro Police Station, the suspect’s name cannot be divulged yet pending the completion of their investigation.

The other suspect’s

identity remains unknown to authorities.

Macarampat said investigators are in hot pursuit operation of the suspects in the killing of Rubinaire Ibara Rabara, 37, from Urdaneta City in Pangasinan.

Rabara was confirmed by her landlady to be a commercial sex worker known to be called “Ilongga” who has, more or less, 14 children from different live-in partners.

300 PMA cadets set to visit Zamboanga T HREE hundred Philippine Military Academy cadets are arriving here for a five-day tour starting tomorrow, Thursday, as part of the “PMA Southern Cruise.”

The arriving PMA cadets are third year students or second class cadets who are scheduled to graduate in 2018.

A series of activities, including courtesy visits at the City Hall, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), Naval Forces Western Mindanao Command, Edwin Andrews Air Base, Task Force Zamboanga and Police Regional Office-9, have been lined up for the cadets during their visit in the city.

The Southern Cruise is an annual activity intended to promote the PMA in the different areas of the country, as the academy seeks to recruit the best, brightest and fittest applicants for the military service.

Task force eyed to tighten security in Boracay after travel warnings

OLLOWING the recent travel warnings in other Philippine tourism sites, the municipal government of Malay in Boracay Island is eyeing to activate a local task force for improved security in this world-famed island.

“The primary purpose of the task force is to provide security and to assure that the island is free from any outside threats and terror acts,” said Rowen Aguirre, executive assistant for Boracay affairs.

He said the Joint Task Force Boracay would be un-

der the Municipal Peace and Order Council chaired by Malay Mayor Ceciron Cawaling.

The preventive measure is necessary to protect the tourism industry of the island saying that travel advisory may create a negative ripple effect, Aguirre said.

“This is a cause of concern for all of us. This travel advisory can affect our businesses,” he said adding that it has a ripple effect on the tourism industry sector as well as in the community.

AVAO del Norte Board Member Shirley Belen Aala on Monday “lambasted in aid of legislation” why some of the provincial athletes who participated in Palarong Pambansa had to sleep on cardboards.

At worst, the athletes were also allegedly left by themselves without being ferried back to their respective places in the province when they arrived in Davao City.

Most of the province’s athletes, some of which are special child-athletes, came

from as far as Talaingod town. Some of them accordingly were not yet fully given their fares.

In regular session attended by invited DepEd Davao del Norte schools division superintendent Dr. Josephine Fadul, Ed.D. and regional DepEd officials, the board member of Tagum City lambasted without naming anyone in particular why the provincial athletes had to sleep on cardboards on the floor of classrooms for several days before getting their mattresses.

She also asked why they were left to fend for themselves when they arrived in Davao City.

Davao del Norte has 57 athletes of the 692-strong Davao Region delegation composed of athletes, coaches, officials and chaperones to the Palarong Pambansa 2017 held at San Jose Buenavista, Antique on April 23 to 29.

“What’s the budget (of the region) in the recent Palarong Pambansa? Did you receive it? Was it lacking? It’s time now for accounting,” Aala asked, adding that she real-

ly saw the athletes on pitiful sight when she was in Antique along with other board members.

HE Save Sulu Movement urged President Rodrigo R. Duterte to declare martial law in six of 19 municipalities in Sulu and urged Congress to conduct an inquiry into the alleged links between local politicians and the Abu Sayyaf.

ILIPINOS working in Hong Kong are thrilled to see and meet President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, a top consulate official said.

In an interview with Consul General of the Philippines in Hong Kong Bernardita Catalla, she said thousands of Filipinos working and living in Hong Kong have long been waiting for Duterte to visit the Special Administrative Region.

“Well, a lot of people, a lot of our OFWs are excited. In fact, they have been clamoring for him to visit,” Catalla said.

Duterte departed for Cambodia on Wednesday to attend the World Economic Forum for ASEAN. From Cambodia, the President and his delegation will proceed to

Hong Kong for a working visit from May 12 to 13.

Catalla said there are around 210,00 Filipinos in Hong Kong, 194,000 of them are Overseas Filipino Workers mainly domestic workers.

She noted that significant number of Filipinos voted for Duterte during the elections saying that he got 66 percent of the 46,000 Filipinos who cast their votes in Hong Kong last year.

She lamented however that the organizers could not accommodate all those who wanted to see the President on Saturday.

Villafuerte also divulged that the cases of dengue from January to March this year have gone down to 462 compared to the first three months of 2016 were there were 1,019 cases of dengue.

In the forum, Tugade said the total airport development of the Philippines consists of two phases -- developing the existing and opening the possibility for

new airports.

At present, there are two airports that serves as the main gateways into and outside the Philippines: the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila and the Clark International Airport in Pampanga.

According to the Philippine Transportation chief, the plan is to develop the terminals at Clark airport, a former American military base, since it has two state-of-theart runways.

“The target to develop the Clark terminal in two to two-and-a-half years. This will be complemented by a railway project which will connect Clark to Manila in just 30 minutes,” Tugade said.

At present, travel time from Manila to Clark and vice versa takes around two to

UPLB to establish campus in Panabo A

N extension campus of the University of the Philippines Los Baños will rise within the 88-hectare Agriya, a mixed-use property development project owned by the Floirendo-led Damosa Land Inc. in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

Ricardo F. Lagdameo, vice president of Damosa Land, told “Wednesdays’ Habi at Kape” that the company donated 31,000 square meters to the staterun institution.

The site will host the UP Professional Schools in Agriculture and the Environment (UP PSAE) with initial classes to start next year at the Anflocor Corporate Center in Davao City.

He said UPLB’s extension campus is one of the components of Agriya’s development that will be completed in about five years. The other components include residential, commercial, institutional, and agri-tourism projects.

The groundbreaking for Agriya’s first phase is scheduled on May 18.

“The timeline they want to achieve is a bit tight because of land preparation. What we offered them they can continue to have classes in our facility here in the city. They can start to bring the students and once finished they can be transferred to the campus,” Lagdameo said.

The construction of the

UPLB campus came after UP and Anflocor, the holding company of Damosa Land, signed a memorandum of agreement at the UP Diliman campus on January 30.

Some of the UPLB faculty will have to fly back and forth between UPLB and Mindanao.

The university will allocate P271 million for the construction of the extension campus.

In a press release published on its website on January 30, UP President Alfredo E. Pascual shared how the “formation of UP PSAE adds to the other efforts of the UP System to bring UP education to other parts of the country,

with previous initiatives seeing the establishment of UP professional campuses in Cebu, Pampanga, Tacloban, and at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. “ UPLB Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, who signed the agreement as a witness, said it is crucial and timely for the extension campus to be established “at the heart of the center of agriculture in the Philippines” with the opportunities and challenges in the 10-country ASEAN Economic Community.

Delay in UMID card production T

HE Social Security System is advising its members that the release for UMID cards applications received starting February 20, 2017 onwards will be delayed.

The delay in the processing of UMID card applications is due to the stoppage of the Central Verification System (CVS) supervised by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). CVS checks biometric

uniqueness.

CVS operation stopped due to high temperature problem in the Data Center of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) where the PSA keeps the CVS. SSS turned over the CVS administration to PSA in July 2015.

With guidance from PSA, SSS will issue another advisory once the CVS processing is restore.

TESDA chief wants more recovering drug users to undergo skills training

ECRETARY Guiling A. Mamondiong of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority has expressed hope that more former drug dependents would avail themselves of skills training, which hopefully could change their lifestyle.

Mamondiong, who was here Wednesday, said that TESDA was already able to provide skills training to nearly 10,000 former drug dependents in the entire country.

But, he stressed that the number who availed themselves of their assistance was “not enough” as the country has around 700,000 drug dependents.

Western Visayas has nearly 200 drug dependents who either have completed or continuously undergoing skills training provided by TESDA under its Trainingfor-Work-Scholarship Program. Majority of them are in Iloilo City.

Mamondiong said TESDA’s currently closely coordinating with the Department of Health and the local government units in the country for their rehabilitation efforts.

“We are asking the LGUs

to rehabilitate their drug dependents because we cannot provide them skills training unless they are rehabilitated.

The role of DOH and every LGU in providing certification that somebody is already ready for the skills training is really important here,” he added.

Aside from skills training, Mamondiong said that they also hope to facilitate employment in the government and private sectors for those who have completed their skills training.

He reiterated that providing skills training and employment to drug dependents was one of the priorities of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“This now being pursued by the President that all drug dependents will be provided with skills training and employment because he knew that one of the reasons why they were addicted to illegal drugs is because they are the people who do not have work; they are the marginalized sector of our society,” he stressed.

The secretary then assured to strengthen its efforts to help more drug dependents in the country. (PNA)

RESIDENTIAL Communications Secretary Martin Andanar on Thursday formally opened discussions on the Philippines’ economic and social development blueprint, otherwise known as “Dutertenomics,” in a forum involving President Rodrigo Duterte’s economic managers and international businessmen and media during the World Economic Forum (WEF) on ASEAN being held at Cambodia’s capital.

The Dutertenomics forum aims to present and drum up support for President Duterte’s ambitious infrastructure plan which Philippine government officials said will usher in “the golden age of infrastructure” in the Philippines.

In his opening remarks, Andanar said the Philippines

stands in the brink of a dramatic transformation.

“We are emerging from our cocoon with a rapidly growing economy and a young and hardworking population. We have enjoyed positive growth every year for the last 19 years,” he said.

“It is now time for us to level up and take the next big step in our national development,” Andanar said.

The big step, he said, is “Dutertenomics” which underlies the Philippine government’s development plan to accelerate poverty reduction, and transform the Philippines into a highto middle-income country to be among the largest economies in the world by 2022.

“To do this, we will invest USD 160 billion in physical infrastructure. We plan to ‘Build, Build, Build.’ We will

also invest heavily in our people, our human capital, through better education and social services,” Duterte’s Communications Secretary said.

Dutertenomics is also known the Build, Build, Build program.

Andanar highlighted to the foreign investors and media the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) projections ranking the Philippines as the fastest growing economy within Southeast Asia for this year and next year.

“With Dutertenomics, with your support and participation, we will meet and perhaps even exceed IMF’s expectations. The Filipino people have waited long enough and they deserve no less from us,” Andanar said.

During the Dutertenom-

ics forum, senior members of the economic team of the Philippine Cabinet will discuss their respective mandates under the program.

These include Public Works Secretary Mark Villar, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, and Bases Conversion and Development Authority chair Vince Dizon.

Meanwhile, DCWD is still processing the procurement of water tankers which will haul 800 cu. m. of water per day from Dumoy WSS to its Cabantian reservoir. Unfortunately, two rounds of bidding on March 22 and April 27, 2017 have failed because suppliers have not complied with all the prescribed legal requirements. Another round of bidding is scheduled on May 16, 2017. Assuming that this bidding is successful, the addition of water supply to the Cabantian reservoir will start by first week of June 2017. ITH the advances in technology, time and distance barriers have been rendered virtually inconsequential these days. It is not new anymore to find many Filipinos work from home and earn even more than the traditional office work. At a time when traffic eats up a lot of time travelling to and from work, it makes sense to be working at home.

There is a bill in the Senate that seeks to promote work-fromhome policy for Filipino employees and by far, it has taken a step forward at the floor after lawmakers finished the period of interpellations on Senate Bill No. 1363 last Wednesday night.

S.B. 1363 seeks to promote work-from-home by encouraging the employers to allow telecommuting or the partial or total substitution of computers or telecommunication technologies for the commute to work by employees. The bill is authored

by Sen. Joel Villanueva, chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment, and Human Resources Development and is due for third and final reading before the last day of session on May 31.

The bill pushes for Filipino workers to have a meaningful work-life balance by encouraging employers to explore telecommuting as a way of allowing work flexibility, according to its author. Other than promoting work-life balance, the bill also seeks to address traffic congestion and its tremendous effect on the country’s economy.

Sen. Villanueva cited a study by the Japan International Coordination Agency which says traffic costs Metro Manila nearly P2.5 billion in lost productivity per day.

In the final reckoning, the biggest benefactor of the workfrom-home scheme is the family which, at the end of the day, does not sacrifice valuable family time which is usually eaten up by hours spent at work and in traffic.

AMADHAN will begin roughly about 2 weeks from now, so it’s high time that you learn something about it. What Ramadhan really is and what Ramadhan isn’t.

To begin, Ramadhan isn’t the Muslim Holy week. People make the analogy because Christians fast during Holy Thursday and Good Friday but this isn’t the case. Ramadhan is holy and important to Muslims for other reasons that we will discuss today.

Also, Ramadhan isn’t penitence.

People make the analogy that avoiding food is similar to physically harming one’s self like the flagellations penitents did during the holy week.

In Islam, one’s forgiveness of his sins is by repentance and no penitence is required.

RAMADHAN IS THE MONTH OF FASTING Allah said in the Quran, “So whoever witnesses among you the month, then he should fast in it, and whoever is sick or on a journey then prescribed number should be made up from other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, so that you’d complete the prescribed period and that you glorify Allah for what He guided you so that you may be grateful.” ~Quran 2:185 A Muslim fasts by not doing anything that invalidates fasting such as, eating, drinking and sexual intercourse with his or her spouse from the time of the dawn prayer until the sunset prayer. Just a few days ago, one of its sons, the retired army general Roy Cimatu of Bangui, Ilocos Norte was sworn in

by President Duterte as acting secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources—replacing the feisty Gina Lopez who tried but failed to sway the Commission on Appointments to retain her as DENR czar.

One can read Cimatu’s appointment several ways. But perhaps President Duterte has seen something there that convinced him it would be to the advantage of this country to appoint another general, and another Ilocano at that to the cabinet.

And with the impending takeover of armed forces chief of staff Eduardo Ano to the Department of Interior and Local Government, that makes the Duterte cabinet a rainbow coalition of strange bedfellows to include its share of Amboys, leftists and rightists.

The choice of Cimatu as DENR secretary was unexpected, considering that his name was nowhere near those supposedly being considered for the post. Yet he might be what the doctor has prescribed all along

Fasting is physically difficult for the Muslim and in many circumstances may affect his health. That is why Allah has given permission to travelers and the sick to break their fast and simply fast on some other days when they are no longer travelling or when they are feeling well.

Pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding may choose not to fast if they think that fasting may affect them or their babies.

RAMADHAN IS MONTH OF THE QURAN “The Month of Ramadhan is when Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of the Guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong).” ~Quran 2:185 Prophet Muhammad was made a prophet and messenger of Allah when he received the earliest revelations which happened during the month of Ramadhan in the year 610 CE. Muslim try to read much of the Quran during the month of Ramadhan. A special voluntary prayer which is called the Salatut Tarawih is done in congregation in Mosques during the evenings of this month.

~Quran 2:185 The main wisdom of fasting during the month of Ramadhan is for a Muslim to attain piety. Piety is uprightness of actions with sincerity that one’s good deeds are done only for the pleasure of Allah alone. Fasting is superior to other good deeds because it is a good deed that no one could see except Allah. A Muslim may see another person make Salah or give charity. But only Allah truly knows who is fasting because a Muslim may be known publicly to be fasting but when he is alone by himself may drink and eat during the fasting hours of Ramadhan. Because of this Allah has a special reward for fasting compared to other good deeds. Allah said, “All of the actions of the son of Adam is for himself except fasting because it is for Me and I will be the one

to reward it.” ~Narrated by Imam Al Bukhari and Imam Muslim in a Hadith Qudsi.

Fasting is also not only about the struggles of the stomach from hunger or the throat from thirst. The tongue of the Muslim should be fasting too.

Prophet Muhammad said, “Whoever does not abandon false speech and ignorance and acting upon it, Allah does not have a need for his abandonment of his food and drink.” ~Narrated by Imam Al Bukhari.

Above all, the Muslim’s heart should fast because the heart of the Muslim is where piety resides.

RAMADHAN, THE MONTH OF SOCIAL JUSTICE Yes, Ramadhan is when the rich and the poor feel the hunger, thirst, and weakness together. The richest Muslims such as the King of Brunei and poorest farmer in Bangladesh feel the same ordeal. No one is exempted from fasting because of his social status.

RAMADHAN IS BEING HEALTHY PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY There have been studies that prove that fasting may boost the immune system if you do it even for a day. So what about doing it for a whole month? Much more, Ramadhan is a month to be spiritually healthy by constantly doing acts of worship and remembering Allah while seeking His reward.

HOW DO WE KNOW THE COMING OF RAMADHAN Islam follows a lunar calendar called the Hijri Calendar. Year 1 of the Hijri calendar starts in the year 623 CE which is the year of the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah. It is lunar, so it’s based on the revolution of the moon around Earth which is one month. A year is composed of 12 of these cycles. A Hijri year is different from a Gregorian year that is used in the Philippines and around the world. This year is 2017 in the Gregorian calendar and 1438 on the Hijri calendar.

Since the Hijri calendar is lunar, you may observe that Ramadhan this year is about two weeks earlier in the Gregorian calendar than the Ramadhan last year. A whole lunar Hijri month may have 29 or 30 days in it.

Ramadhan is established to have arrived upon the witnessing of the New Moon for the month of Ramadhan. If it is not sighted due to weather conditions such as cloudiness or haze, the Muslim authority in the Philippines will declare the month before Ramadhan which is Sha’ban as 30 days and the first day of Ramadhan will automatically come after that.

But he owes no one his position considering his impeccable credentials.

He comes from the province of Benguet that is devastated partly by corporate mining. It also hosts three of Asia’s largest hydroelectric dams (Binga, Ambuclao, San Roque). Their presence notwithstanding, the province remains one of the provinces in the Philippines where most of the population live in poverty. To date, some villages have yet to avail themselves of electricity. But probably that is another story.

But considering time constraints, he said the government would prioritize what could be easily done and what could easily be handled -- improving the present.

Proof to that are the four Baroque churches in the country which are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. And if you roam around the country, several stunning churches are scattered in the different regions of the country. But the Philippines is not just home to amazing churches. If you travel to Mindanao, some of parts of the island boast some of the most strikingly beautiful mosques in the country. Although these structures are places of worship, one can’t resist of admiring of how these Islamic structures are designed and constructed.

Having gone to the different parts of Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, here I compiled 10 of the most strikingly beautiful mosques in the country – they’ll all found in Mindanao.

The Grand Mosque of Cotabato City The Grand Mosque which is also called Masjid Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is the largest and said to be the grandest mosque in the Philippines. It is located along Tamontaka Bubong Road in Cotabato City. The construction of this grand structure is funded by the Sultan of Brunei to whom the Masjid was named, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

The Pink of Mosque of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao Known for its strikingly bright pink color, the Pink Mosque of Datu Saudi Ampatuan in the Province of Maguindanao is the most popular and most photographed mosque among the many mosques in the Autono-

mous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Named after Datu Saudi Ampatuan Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom who initiated the construction of the structure, the Pink Mosque was painted in bright pink to represent peace and love.

Bacolod Grande Mosque of Bacolod, Lanao Del Sur In the Mid-1900’s, this stunningly magnificent mosque is said to be the “Little Mecca of Lanao Del Sur”. This is the Bacolod Grande Mosque located in Barangay Lama, town of Bacolod-Kalawi, Province of Lanano Del Sur. The structure is painted in dark green colors. Like other mosques painted in green, the color green is a traditional color of Islam and has represented Islam for centuries. Masjid Al-Nasser Abpi of Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao About 30 minutes from downtown Cotabato City, another town of the Province of Maguindanao boasts of its imposing white Mosque called Masjid Al-Nasser Abpi. This is situated in Magelco in the town of Datu Odin Sinsuat. This is a newly built mosque and painted mostly in white. The color white is perhaps the second-most associated color with Islam symbolizing purity and peace.

Hja. Sitti Raya Mosque of Talipao, Sulu In the province of Sulu, another quaint town boasts of its uniquely designed and painted mosque – this is the Hadja Sitti Raya Mosque of the Municipality of Talipao, about an hour ride from the Capital of Bongao. Unlike other mosque painted with one single or two colors, Hadja Sitti Raya Mosque is painted in different colors with different patterns. This is built the former local chief executive of the town Mayor Sitti Raya Tulawei for the people of Talipao.

In the island provice of Tawi-Tawi, its biggest mosque is situated in the quiet town of Panglima Sugala. It is called Masjid Kapunan located in Batu-Batu, Panglima Sugala and said to be the most beautiful mosque ever built in the whole TawiTawi Province.

Buluan Mosque in Buluan, Maguindanao The capital town of Maguindanao, the town of Buluan is also home to one of the beautiful mosques in the entire Province. Named Buluan Mosque, it is built by the family of Maguindanao Governor Toto Mangudadatu for the people of Buluan. This magnificent structure is located in Barangay Maslabeng.

Buadi Sacayo Masjid in Marawi City There are plenty of beautiful mosques scattered in the many parts of Marawi City, the capital of the province of Lanao Del Sur that I have yet to visit and see. For now, one of those that attract me most is the Buadi Sacayo Masjid located in Barangay Bangon.

The White Mosque by the Sea of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi In the small village of Bongao in Barangay Tubig Tanah, a tiny white mosque gleams just a few meters from the seas of Tawi-Tawi. Despite its tiny size, there’s something about this mosque that visitors love about. Some even describe it as an igloo-inspired mosque. But what I love

about this mosque is its quaint setting sitting quietly by the bay amidst the blue sky on a clear day, a manicured Bermuda grass and old tall coconut trees around.

Sheik Makdum Mosque of Simunul, Tawi-Tawi It may not be as grand as the Grand Mosque of Cotabato but the country’s oldest Islamic worship site situated in the island town of Simunul in the Province of Tawi-Tawi is a sight to behold – this is the Sheik Karimul Makdum Mosque, named after the first Arab missionary to set foot in the South to propagate Islam. What’s amazing about this mosque is the four columns found and preserved inside it believed to been erected since the mosque was built in 1380 – that means they’re 636 years of age. Amazing!

The events held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California and at the Kings Theatre in New York were the first international shows headlined by Alden and Maine (Yaya Dub), popularly known as AlDub from Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye.

They were joined by the comedic trio of Jose Manalo (Lola Tinidora), Wally Bayola (Lola Nidora), and Paolo Ballesteros (Lola Tidora).

ECENT studies have shown that Filipinos’ coffee-drinking habit is on the rise. Of course, the same trend is evident for coffee shops. While most are likely built just for profit, there is one that was built for peace.

Located at One Oasis Davao, Coffee for Peace Bistro is a coffee shop borne to provide coffee farmers from high-conflict zones of Mindanao a venue to sell their products.

The CEO, Ms. Felicitas “Joji” Pantoja, said “One cannot discuss peace when one is hungry. In 2006, when our Peacebuilders Community (PBCI) group was having a peace-building mission for the government and MILF, a conflict arose between a Muslim landowner and migrant farmer. During the discussion, I noticed that they were serv-

ing coffee. And I thought that maybe peace and a sense of community can be attained if they joint forces in learning how to grow coffee and turn it into their livelihood. We transferred the skills for growing coffee to the farmers in Mindanao. It takes 3 years for a tree to bear fruit. In 2008, we need a shop to brew and sell coffee so Coffee for Peace was first opened at Matina, Davao.”

Fortunately, it turned out that the coffee beans had a grade of “premium” and “specialty” when brought to US and Canada. With no surprise, the premium quality attracted coffee lovers, making the first Coffee for Peace café always packed with customers.

Tagum City’s emergency response capability boosted with 2 new cars

HE city government of Tagum on Thursday commissioned two newly-acquired vehicles to boost the emergency response capability of its rescuers and emergency responders.

Mayor Allan Rellon said the funds used for the purchase of the two vehicles, amounting to PHP4.1 million, were taken from the 2016 calamity fund of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO).

Rellon said the additional vehicles will greatly help the CDRRMO in responding to emergency situations.

“This will also enhance our agenda for genuine peace, safety and security under the EAGLE WINGS Program,” Rellon said.

The EAGLE WINGS program is the development blueprint of Tagum City and the centerpiece of the governance agenda of the administration of Rellon and the members of the city council.

HE story below was shared by the famous French author Victor Hugo: It was during the French Revolution in 1700.

A mother and her two children were driven from their home.

They wandered through the woods and fields for several days, living on roots and leaves. On the third morning, they hid in some bushes but two soldiers flushed them out.

The officer saw they were starving, so he gave them a long loaf of French bread.

The mother grabbed like a famished animal, broke it into two pieces, and gave one to each child.

One officer saw that and asked the other, “Isn’t that mother hungry?”

“No,” replied the captain, “it’s because she’s a mother.”

The anecdote reminded me the words of Shannon L. Alder. She said, “The greatest heroes in life are those that never give up on someone. They stick it out and make it work.

They sacrifice things in their life, in order to help others grow. They give up what they want because someone needs it more.

They work hard and overcome adversity. They fail for a moment, but get back up on their feet to show

others they don’t have to stay down.

“They show their loved ones that love is not ‘proved’ by conformity. They teach others that having a voice is a sign of courage, and they will not stay silent to make people feel comfortable. They are fearless and will do whatever it takes to bring about the greatness in the ones they love because doing so brings them peace. Their name is -- MOM.” The famous American novelist Washington Irving said it right: “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

More often than not, the best place of a mother in the house is the kitchen. That seems to be her turf. Unknowingly, not all mothers love the place. Here’s a glimpse of a conversation between a mother and daughter, as penned by Kyung-Sook Shin in Please Look After Mom: “Mom’s eyes held

yours for a moment. ‘I don’t like or dislike the kitchen. I cooked because I had to. I had to stay in the kitchen so you could all eat and go to school. How could you only do what you like? There are things you have to do whether you like it or not.’

“Mom’s expression asked, ‘What kind of question is that?’ And then she murmured, ‘If you only do what you like, who’s going to do what you don’t like?’”

But mother knows best, so goes a saying.

They know the secret of turning a rascal kid to do what she wants the child to do by praising the little one. It was the great English writer and painter, John Ruskin, who said that some of the greatest successes of the human race have been caused by love of praise.

“This is especially true in childhood,” Jack Denton Scott wrote in Reader’s Digest. “But all too often parents turn children away by pointing out only their faults and mistakes.

A wise parent makes it a point to praise a child when he or she deserves it. It can work wonders.”

Scott proved this by the story of a woman he knew well. She completely transformed her son’s dislike of drying dishes by

a word of praise to him.

The story goes this way: One night, the mother and son were doing the dishes together, much to his dislike, when suddenly he dropped a large meat platter. There was silence after the crash.

Then his mother looked at him and said, “You know, Robert, of all the times you have dried dishes for me, this is the first time you have ever dropped one. I think you have set some kind of record.”

Fear left the boy’s face and he broke out into a smile. Forever after that, drying dishes was fun.

How true was the statement of a psychologist who said: “Praise virtue and you will find few vices to condemn.”

Perhaps the only woman who never had a mother-in-law was Eve, the first woman. But she did become a motherherself -- to Cain and Abel.

Lounsbrough wrote: “Being a mother is not about ‘birthing a child into the world.’ Rather, it is about repeatedly ‘birthing into the child’ a steady sense of their inestimable worth, a prized understanding of their authentic self, a conviction that the impossible is largely the stuff of myth, and an utterly unwavering belief that cold actions of men never represent the warm heart of God. Cavs, Warriors on collision course A

S the sports world salivates while awaiting a seemingly inevitable NBA Finals, Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue is keeping his undefeated team focused on its next unknown opponent.

And keeping an eye on the Warriors. ‘’I’m always watching,’’ Lue said. ‘’I’m watching everybody.’’

But maybe that Northern California team a little more.

With both Cleveland and Golden State at 8-0 in these playoffs and on a collision course toward a potential third straight Finals, there has been heated debate about whether Cavaliers-Warriors 3.0 is good for basketball.

It’s the first time two teams have swept through the first two rounds, and with the way the Cavaliers and Warriors are playing, it doesn’t seem to matter who they’ll face once the conference finals get going.

Lue isn’t overlook ing Boston or Wa sh i n g ton, one of which will play Cleveland next, but he isn’t buying into this notion that a third helping of Cavaliers vs.

Warriors is somehow a hoops overindulgence. ‘’I think a lot of people wanted to see Boston and the Lakers back in the day,’’ he said. ‘’I think nowadays, a lot of people want to see Golden StateCavs. And it’s not a problem. Right now, it’s two of the teams playing some of the best basketball.

So, two of the teams that have been in back-to-back Finals, so, why not?

LAYING in the Garden has brought out the Boston Celtics’ best basketball this postseason.

Wednesday night it was home to one of the best nights of Avery Bradley’s career.

Bradley scored a playoff career-high 29 points, and the Celtics beat the Washington Wizards 123-101 to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

After being thoroughly picked apart in losses at Washington in Games 3 and 4, Boston shared the ball in Game 5, and again resembled the team that entered the game having won seven straight and 11 of 13 in the Garden against Washington.

Al Horford added 19 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Isaiah Thomas scored 18 points and handed out nine assists. ‘’We’re a team. And it’s going to take a team effort to beat the Washington Wizards,’’ Bradley said.

Game 6 is Friday night in Washington, where the Wizards easily won their two games. If the Celtics win, they would move on to host the Cleveland Cavaliers to open the Eastern Confer-

ence finals.

Game 7 would be in Boston on Monday.

Boston led by as many as 26 points, negating Washington’s physicality by spreading the floor and knocking down 16 3-pointers.

John Wall had 21 for the Wizards, who haven’t won a playoff game in Boston since 1982.

The Wizards scored the first four points of game, but that was followed by 16-0 run by the Celtics. ‘’The great start kind of got us going on both ends of the floor,’’ Bradley said. ‘’Tonight we saw if we’re able to start the right way, the game’s in our control.’’

It marked the fourth time in the series that one team has had a run of at least 16-0, including three times in the first quarter.

Washington had a 16-0 spurt to start Game 1, a 22-0 run in Game 3 and 26-0 burst in Game 4.

During Boston’s first-quarter spurt Wednesday, the Wizards missed eight straight shots before it was ended by Otto Porter’s basket.

Boston did a good job of sharing the ball, getting assists on 12 of 13 baskets in the opening 12 minutes.

Thomas had five assists, more than Washington’s entire team (four) in the

period.

The Celtics also outrebounded the Wizards 4845, after being outrebounded by 26 boards through each of the previous two games (95-69). ‘’They were the more physical team today,’’ Wall said. ‘’Throughout this whole series, whoever’s the most physical team has won every game.’’

The Wizards responded with more energy after halftime, but each of their mini-runs were quickly beaten back by Boston, which continued to share the ball and take advantage of their fast-break opportunities.

The Celtics’ lead grew to 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Thomas said one thing that became apparent in watching film from the Celtics’ losses in Games 3 and 4 was that he had to adjust his game with three or four defenders guarding him.

He said he’s found maturity to step back and not force plays that he might not have had earlier in his career. ‘’Now I’m seeing the game differently,’’ Thomas said. ‘’But at the same time, that’s not going to stop me from being aggressive and trying to make plays, not just for myself but for my teammates as well.’’
