avao City police director S/Supt. Alexander Tagum called on parents to remain vigilant in keeping their children away from possible rapists lurking in the vicinity of their homes. “This is because most rape incidents happen in the victim’s home, where in the suspects are either family members or family friends,” Tagum told the AFP-PNP press conference on Wednesday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel. He said majority of the victims are from the vulnerable
ages below ive to 12 years old. He said there is need for the public to pay close attention to their children and to stay vigilant. “Our Davao City Mayor Hon. Sara Duterte Carpio, during our recent City Peace and Order Council meeting had noticed and observed the increase of rape incident this year, so there is really a need to closely monitor our children,” he said. He said that the suspects are taking advantage of the vulnerability of the children, their familiarity with the victims, and
the trust given to by the family to the suspects. He added in most cases, the suspects are within the family who maybe stepfather, uncles, neighbors or considered family friends. Some suspects are neighbors who are involved with illegal drugs and some are jobless. The DCPO cited an increase in rape cases for the year 2017, with 58 recorded from January to October 2017 compared to 54 cases last year. Last week, eight cases of rape were recorded with the
seven suspects arrested and slapped with charges. One suspect is the subject of man- hunt operation. “We are enhancing our public awareness campaign and community empowerment program to ensure that all our residents of Davao City will be secured in their respective home, security concern is not just a concern of the security personnel and law enforcement agencies but primarily we should all stay vigilant,” said Tagum.
