Dads to BOC: Why ignore mayor’s request?

avao City lawmakers want to know why the local Bureau of Customs is not acting on the request of the Peace and Order Council and the City Tourism Council to reopen the P250-million x-ray machine facility at the Sasa Port as part of the city’s move to improve its security.

Davao City Councilor Danilo C. Dayanghirang said he is mulling the idea of calling Davao Customs Collector Erastus Sandino Austria to a city council session to shed light on the status of the costly x-ray

machine in Sasa Port which has been rendered inutile for more than seven years now due to a legal dispute between the Bureau of Customs and the owner of the container yard where the x-ray machine is mothballed.

The expensive machine has become a white elephant for years. (“While elephant” is idiomatic term for a property or possession that is useless or troublesome, especially one that is expensive to maintain or dif�icult to dispose of, according to Oxford Dictionaries).

The x-ray machine was

installed in the Designated Examination Area (DEA) inside the Aquarius Container Yard of businessman Rodolfo Reta pursuant to a contract (memorandum of agreement) signed by him and the then BOC commissioner sometime in 2009.

In February 2010, however, the DEA was suddenly closed by the then acting Customs Anju Nereo Castigador, an unexpected move which was questioned by Reta in court. He �iled administrative and criminal cases with the Ombudsman, against the BOC of�icial,

who was eventually dismissed from the service with another local Customs employee.

Two other Customs examiners charged by Reta was slapped by the Ombudsman with suspension orders.

Among the cases lodged in court was the insistence of the BOC that the MOA with Reta had been validly terminated.

However, Reta maintained that the MOA has been rescinded and went to court. He was granted favorable rulings in the Regional Trial Court and the

hilippine Catholic bishops say they are not out to undermine the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte by offering sanctuary to several policemen allegedly linked to drug-related killings.

Still no motive in Vegas killings

S authorities have analyzed more than 1,000 leads into the Las Vegas mass shooting investigation but they still lack a motive for the crime, Las Vegas Police Department Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said during a press conference on Friday.

“To date, we have run down well more than a thousand leads in this investigation,” McMahill said. “While some of it has helped create a better pro�ile into the madness of the suspect, we do not still have a clear motive or reason why.”

McMahill also said that US authorities have found no link between the mass shooting and the Daesh (also referred to as ISIS or ISIL) terror group that has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“We’re also aware, of

course, that ISIS has repeatedly claimed responsibility, which today I can tell you that we have no known nexus to,” McMahill added.

Stephen Paddock, 64, opened �ire on a country music festival from his room on the 32nd �loor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino last Oct. 1, killing 59 people and injuring more than 500 others. He killed himself before police entered the hotel room.

Police say that the gunman had spent years stockpiling weapons before Sunday’s attack. He had also stored more ammunition and explosives in his car at the time of the attack.

PSA pressed to provide data for ‘Ambisyon 2040’

he Philippine Statistics Authority has been challenged to more provide more sophisticated data that will be used as baseline for the government’s Ambisyon 2040.

National Economic and Development Authority Under Secretary Rosemarie G. Edillon, hurled the challenge on October 6 to the PSA during the opening ceremony of the 28th National Statistics Month at the Pinnacle Hotel.

Edillon said the government still do not have the statistics to

support its baseline needs.

“Our data shows that 21.1 percent are still poor and 8.9 percent if I’m not mistaken belongs to the hungry but we do not have data in other indicators,” said Edillon.

The National Statistics Month is celebrated on the month of October to raise awareness the statistics. “We need statistics to be able to come up with policies, programs and project and we are all part of the statistics community so data producers, data sources and as

data users.

The statistics month is celebrated in all state college and universities to generate the awareness and appreciation,” she added.

She said statistics show that only 40 percent of adults have savings account as urged students and young adults to open savings account for their future.

sent the measure out for plenary debate and approval.

“The exclusion is unfair to compensation earners who for years have endured the burden of paying for the lion’s share of all personal income taxes,” Atienza, former three-term mayor of Manila, said.

Atienza has been batting for the passage of key measures seeking to assure employees a rising standard of living, including a bill that proposes to require all corporations to distribute at least 10 percent of their annual net income to their workers as pro�it share.

Under the proposed Pro�it-Sharing Act, the

amount handed out by a corporation as the 10-percent pro�it share of its employees shall be treated as tax credit that may be used by the �irm to pay for its income tax obligations the following year.

The shared pro�it shall not affect or diminish in any way the salaries, 13th month pay and other existing statutory as well as collective bargaining agreement (CBA)-speci�ied bene�its enjoyed by employees.

“Our proposal is a great way to give employees a sense of ownership in the business, and for corporations to keep workers highly driven and productive,” Atienza said.

Senate scored for nixing P100T employees bonus

uhay Rep. Lito Atienza has slammed the Senate for throwing out the House’s initiative to increase to P100,000 the aggregate amount of 13th month pay, Christmas bonus and other bene�its that may be received tax-free by employees every year.

“The whole point of the higher ceiling for tax-exempt bonuses and other bene�its is to help as many employees as possible. The higher the limit, the greater the number of potential bene�iciaries,” Atienza, the seniordeputy minority leader, said.

40 bodies buried in Marawi, mostly of ISIS-Maute fighters

A

uthorities buried 40 bodies of mostly ISIS-Maute �ighters who were killed in four months of �ighting here.

Col. Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of Task Force Ranao, said 25 of the remains were believed to be ISIS-Maute �ighters killed in the operations to retake Marawi.

He said 15 of the bodies were recovered around Dansalan College and the Bato Ali mosque where government troops encountered the �iercest resistance from the �ighters.

“Many of them were found wearing black shirts and had ammo bandoliers indicating most likely they were ISIS-Maute �ighters,” Brawner said.

Amer Rashid Mindalano, head of the Marawi City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Of�ice,

said the Malaysian Embassy sent them a copy of a picture of Dr. Mahmud Ahmad, a known militant.

“It was an unof�icial request to identify if the Malaysian militant was among those killed,” he said.

Mindalano said they failed to identify Ahmad because the bodies were beyond physical recognition.

Forensic experts from the PNP Crime Laboratory have conducted DNA tests on the bodies in the past two days.

Bukidnon village chief surrenders guns, ammo

A

village chief is facing charges for allegedly possessing several �irearms and ammunition, which were con�iscated by authorities after raiding his home, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-10 (CIDG-10) said Saturday.

Arrested was Eliazar Ebona, chairof Barangay Gango, in Libona, Bukidnon, by operatives of the Martial Law-Special Action Group (ML-SAG), on Friday (Oct. 6).

Seized from Ebona’s possession were an M16, an AK47, and two M22 ri�les; a caliber .45 pistol; bullets; a bulletproof vest; and an estimated �ive kilograms of sus-

pected ammonium nitrate, said the ML-SAG, composed of personnel from the CIDG10, Phil. National Police and Phil. Army’s 4th Infantry Division.

The raid ensued after complaints from Ebona’s neighbors who accused him of threatening them. The suspect is allegedly involved in illegal mining activities in his village, a known mining area in Bukidnon.

SPO4 Noel Oclarit, chief investigator at CIDG-Cagayan de Oro, said the village of�icial will be charged with illegal possession of �irearms and ammunition (RA 10591) and illegal possession of explosives (RA 9516).

Oclarit said the suspect has been seen several times carrying long �irearms in his village, prompting the CIDG to conduct surveillance operation.

He said most of the seized �irearms are unlicensed, while the others have yet to be veri�ied at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame.

Oclarit said they have reason to believe that the ammonium nitrate-commonly used as a component in fertilizers but also in making improvised explosive devices-seized from the suspect was being used for mining activities.

In an interview with reporters, Ebona maintained his �irearms were all licensed and that these were his means of defense against the threat of the communist rebels. He said he used to be a member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU).

For his part, Libona Mayor Leonardo Calingasan said he did not expect that Ebona would be arrested since the suspect was a law-abiding person.

Calingasan said Ebona is even the president of the town’s Association of Barangay Councils and one of the mayor’s partners in Libona’s anti-drug campaign. (PNA)

Visayas region economy seen to outpace PH GDP

T

he Visayas region economy is projected to outpace Philippine economic growth over the next �ive years, as the government is working to disperse development to the regions to reduce inequality and foster inclusive growth.

During the general membership meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines-Visayas Chapter in Cebu City on Thursday, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said the region’s growth is expected to be between 7.7 and 8.3 percent.

Economic growth in the region is projected to be driven by the industry and services sectors, which make up more than 90 percent of regional economies.

As identi�ied in the Philippine Development Plan 2‎ 017-2022, growth in country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to strengthen at 7 to 8 percent in the medium term.

Pernia, also National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director-General, said Visayas plays an important role in national economic growth, citing Concentration, Con-

nectivity and Vulnerability Reduction as its strengths.

“In terms of concentration, Visayas has the only copper smelting plant in the country, a major producer of geothermal energy, and is also a top producer of major agricultural and �ishery products. In terms of connectivity, Visayas is the major link between Luzon and Mindanao,” he said.

He added the Visayas region would be able to contribute to improving national Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation measures, following its experience from typhoon Yolanda.

“The Philippine economy appears robust now, but inequality across the regions remains and chronic poverty persists. Thus, the government will shift investments away from Metro Manila and into the regions especially in Visayas and Mindanao,” the NEDA chief added.

The country’s GDP remains concentrated in the National Capital Region , CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and Central Luzon. These three regions collectively account for almost two-thirds of total GDP. (PNA)

Business as usual for Caraga mining firms

I

t’s been business as usual for all mining companies in the Caraga Region.

This after all of them have exhausted all legal remedies to counter the suspension and closure orders, according to Engr. Roger A. de Dios, the regional director of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)-Caraga.

Former Environment Secretary Regina Lopez had suspended 15 mining companies in Caraga mainly for siltation of river and coastal waters and destroying watersheds.

Aside from the suspension order, closure orders were sent to these mining companies, who are extracting nickel ore, shipped mostly to Japan and China.

“They have �iled an appeal and motion for reconsideration so all of them were not affected,” De Dios said noon Thursday during a press conference held at Philippine Gateway Hotel on the occasion of 4th Caraga Mining Symposium and Safety Competition.

Seven of the Caraga mining �irms ordered closed are operating in Dinagat Islands, four in Surigao del Norte, and three in Surigao del Sur. The seven companies ordered closed in Dinagat Islands, which has been a mineral reservation area since 1939, are AAMPhil Natural Resources Exploration, Kromico Inc., Libjo Mining Corporation, Oriental Synergy Mining Corporation, Oriental Vision Mining Philippines Corp., SinoSteel Philippines H.Y. Mining Corporation, and Wellex Mining Corporation.

Five of seven mining companies operating in Surigao del Norte are up for closure – ADNAMA Mining Resources Corp., Claver Mineral Development Corp., Platinum Group Metals Corp, Hinatuan Mining Corp., and Claver Mineral Development Corporation.

The three mining companies in Surigao del Sur in the list are CTP Construction and Mining Corp., Carrascal Nickel Corp., and Marcventures Mining and Development Corp.

Last February 22, De Dios suspended Century Peak Corporation (CPC), a “recidivist” mining company in Dinagat for several violations, bringing the total to 16 mining companies. CPC engaged in extracting nickel ore in the town of Loreto.

Lopez, who was rejected by the Commission on Appointment (CA) last May 3, was replaced by former Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Roy Cimatu, who got the con�irmation before the CA on Wednesday.

The anti-mining group Caraga Watch is upset on this development.

“The way MGB and the mining [companies] respond to the government sanctions only proves how inutile and bankrupt our mining laws and policies are,” Rev. Pio Mercado, chairperson of the Caraga Watch, told MindaNews via text message Thursday.

“We are happy but this is not enough,” said former Surigao City Councilor Edgar Canda, who is among those

organizing anti-mining protests here. “They should stop operating immediately and start to do genuine rehabilitation of the environment,” he stressed.

“While the sanctions were in effect under Sec. Gina Lopez, the mining [companies] had openly de�ied such orders. [They] had mocked the secretary then and so with the appointing authority which is the President,” Mercado added.

Early this year, several anti-mining protesters were happy on the stance of the former secretary.

Canda said the mining companies should attend to the massive siltation in the rivers and seas and pay the people affected by the damage on the environment.

“Despite this sad development, we should continue to �ight against the wanton destructive activities wrought by mining companies in the region and protect the people’s interest, especially the marginalized,” he said. (Roel N. Catoto / MindaNews)

MMDA is eyeing to reduce more than 3,000 vehicles heading to the malls during morning rush hour along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).

There are 25 shopping malls on major roads in Metro Manila, 16 are located along

EDSA alone. Major traf�ic contributors are located in Quezon City Central Business District, Makati Central Business District, and Pasig Central Business District.

The agency has earlier stated that the number of vehicles passing through EDSA is to increase from 6,800 vehicles per direction to 7,500 vehicles as the Christmas season draws near.

Mall hours reset from 11 AM to 11 PM effective Oct. 15

o ease traf�ic congestion in Metro Manila with the onset of the holiday season, mall operations will start from 11 AM to 11 PM effective October 15, 2017 to January 15, 2018.

This was agreed upon in a meeting of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) with mall operators Friday at its main of�ice in Makati City.

Deliveries will also be conducted from 11 PM until 5 AM next day to reduce the number of delivery trucks traversing

Boost Mindanao economy to achieve PH growth-WB

T

he World Bank is urging the Philippines to adopt a strategy on Mindanao to support sustainable peace and development and job creation, which are deemed crucial in pursuing sustained overall economic growth in the long term.

“Mindanao is an important part of the Philippine inclusive growth story. It is no coincidence that Mindanao, which produces a large share of agriculture output at around 40 percent, also has a lot of poverty,” said WB research analyst Kevin Cruz in a press brie�ing on Thursday.

Cruz said raising Mindanao’s agricultural productivity could further increase domestic output and reduce prices of food and other goods across the country.

Mindanao accounts for 40 percent of the country’s total agricultural output and 60 percent of all agricultural exports. However, only 16 percent of Mindanao farmers produce a marketable surplus and more than half of farm households are poor.

Mindanao is estimated to have 25 percent of the coun-

try’s population and 37 percent of the country’s poor.

A WB report pushed for strategies for job creation, focusing on raising agricultural productivity and improving farm-to-market connectivity; boosting human development through greater investments in health, education and skills; and building effective institutions in con�lict-affected areas for better service delivery.

WB Lead Economist for the Philippines Birgit Hansl is optimistic the Philippines could achieve its goal of becoming an upper middle-income economy in the medium term, given its growth path.

The Bank projected Philippine growth at 6.6 percent in 2017 and 6.7 percent in 2018 and 2019.

“For (the) medium term, there will be no doubt that this is (an) achievable result but this is dependent on policies that make growth that is continuing to happen more inclusive,” said Hansl.

She said an increase in public spending on infrastructure building is expected to boost investment growth.

In a statement Friday, BOI said the new production line in CPAVI’s facility in Barangay Tambler, Calumpang, Purok Lansong in General Santos City targets to produce 15.3 million kg. of coconut milk annually for export to Malaysia.

It partnered with Llanco Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., producer and supplier of coconut-related products in Malaysia, for the export of CPAVI’s coconut milk to the neighboring country.

Numbers game

he legal team of embattled Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno believes that the magistrate’s fate will not be a numbers game.

Unfazed by the 25-2 voting from the House of Representatives Justice Committee on the impeachment commplaint against Sereno, the Chief Justice’s camp boldly said “numbers cannot overwhelm truth and justice in efforts to oust their client in the House of Representatives dominated by allies of President Duterte. The congressional committee found suf�icient grounds to impeach Sereno by that overwhelming margin.

That vote by the House committee on justice cleared the way for the next step to her impeachment—the determination of probable cause.

The next step is mustering one-third of the 293 members of the House which would send the impeachment complaint to the Senate for trial.

But while the Sereno legal team submits that Congress is a numbers game, they insist that truth and justice is not a numbers game.

However. while it is true that the ends of truth and justice will be the ultimate goal of the impeachment process, numbers will still be the determinant. History will tell us that numbers also decided the fate of her predecessor, the late Renato Corona.

In this jurisdiction, numbers always matter whether in politics or in justice. The Supreme Court, for one, is a body of numbers. Voting whether en banc or by division is determmined by plurality. Numbers do matter. That is why it cannot be denied that voting in the highest court almost always go by the the af�iliation of justices as identi�ied by their appointments.

N my childhood days when I became politically conscious, I have never heard nor read of a Philippine president who displayed as much fatherly concern as what PRRD has thus far shown for our AFP personnel.

As Filipinos recently commemorated “Father’s Day” nationwide, it becomes �itting that “Tatay Digong” be tagged as such by millions of his adoring supporters, fans and followers here and around the world who praise his paternal actions visiting the hospitals where wounded soldiers lay in recuperation.

He has also displayed his uncloaked sincerity by physically mourning and grieving with the families and heirs left behind by a KIA, condoling with them during vigils in the hometown of the fallen soldier.

“Tatay Digong” is the only sobriquet that can appropriately describe who the real Rodrigo Roa Duterte is. Nothing else comes close.

If it were not too much even to suggest, “Tatay Digong” should be the symbol of Father’s Day celebrations in the

hese days, people are talking more about climate change and disasters (�loods, earthquakes, and volcano eruptions). It seems no one pays attention anymore to ozone layer depletion.

But thirty years ago, the international community gathered together in Canada and came up with what is now known as Montreal Protocol to save the ozone layer, a minor constituent of the atmosphere, comprising only a few millionths of its total volume. Today, 197 countries have participated in the treaty and resulted in the phase-out of 99% of nearly 100 ozone-depleting chemicals.

“Thirty years ago, the world proved it can come together and tackle a global problem with global resolve,” said Erik Solheim, head of the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), of what is touted as the most successful international environmental treaty in history.

The Philippines is among those that signed the treaty. “The Montreal Protocol is clear proof that despite formidable odds, transformative results can be achieved through concerted global efforts,” said Senator Loren Legarda, the UN Global Champion for Resilience.

These words of assurance are not mere rhetoric.

“Tatay Digong” has proven every doubting Thomases wrong.

Yes, those who detest “Tatay Digong” for his cussing simply swallowed their snickering saliva because despite his propensity to utter un-printables every now and then, “Tatay Digong’s” credibility remains high.

So, if the royalty in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the Middle East receive him on a red carpet and accede to his diplomatic requests, who are the stupid opposition to deserve the people’s attention?

In the present political atmosphere, those who continue to deride and debase the executive actions and leadership of “Tatay Digong” will one day

pay dearly when the reckoning comes.

Thanks to the social media platforms available today, Filipinos here and abroad are enabled to discern the truth from media spins, to separate the chaff from the grain as the cliché goes.

That the Metro Manila-based mainstream media continue to discriminate against “Tatay Digong” because of his “probinsiyano” custom, proves that radical change of constitutional in�irmities be pursued and �inished during his term of of�ice.

Parliamentary federalism, it is.

In 1976, it was found that the concentration of chlorine in the atmosphere – which were released from CFCs – was 1.25 parts per billion (ppb). The number doubled in 1989.

“Although the �igures may sound like a ridiculously small amount, CFCs are about 15,000 times more ef�icient at producing greenhouse effect. So, a little means a lot. About 20% of global warming is attributed to CFCs,” wrote H. Steven Dash�hersky, author of “Environmental Literacy.”

It was then that scientists became alarmed as the effects could be lethal.

UVB (the higher energy ultraviolet radiation absorbed by ozone) is generally accepted to be a contributory factor to skin cancer and to produce Vitamin D. In addition, increased surface ultraviolet leads to increased tropospheric ozone, which is a health risk to humans.

Another form of skin cancer – malignant melanoma – is much less common but far more dangerous, being lethal in about 15–20% of the cases diagnosed. The relationship between malignant melanoma and ultraviolet exposure is not yet well understood, but it appears that both UVB and UVA are involved.

There are also studies suggesting the association between ocular cortical cataracts and UVB exposure. In

the Philippines, 400,000 Filipinos get blind because of cataract, whose global cost of blindness is approximately 25 billion dollars annually in lost productivity.

“When a cataract happens, the amount of light that can enter the eye is reduced and the patient complains of blurring of vision especially in bright sunlight when the pupil gets constricted and also glare at night when driving,” says Dr. Manuel Agulto, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. “These complaints are progressive and by the time the cataract has become matured (noticeable by its white color) the patient is already blind.”

Ozone depletion can also have devastating effects on the environment. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), depletion of the ozone layer could reduce crop yields and seriously disturb the balance of the ecosystems of the oceans.

Had the depletion of ozone layer continued, the world would be at least 25% hotter today. “That additional heat energy would have provided ‘fuel’ for today’s extreme weather events like typhoons, �loods and droughts,” said Dr. Rolando Garcia, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Ozone at the ground level, at the bottom of the troposphere is a harmful pollutant. One of the greenhouse gases, it is actually a result from the exhausts of automobiles and other vehicles and other sources.

After troposphere comes stratosphere, which continues from 10 kilometers to about 50 kilometers. Most commercial airline traf�ic occurs in the lower part of the stratosphere. It is in this layer where the ozone shield is found.

“If all the ozone contained in the atmosphere from ground level to a height of some 50 kilometers could be assembled at the earth’s surface, it would comprise a layer of gas only about three millimeters thick, weighing some 3,000 million tons,” a science scribe wrote.

Why is there so much ado about ozone layer? Nothing except that existence of humans and other terrestrial being depends on the presence of ozone. Studies have shown that depletion of the ozone layer would allow more ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth’s surface.

Reta also succeeded in thwarting two attempts of the BOC to take the x-ray machine out of the DEA inside the container yard owned by him. In both instances, the court sided with Reta, according to Dean Manuel Quibod of the Ateneo de Davao University college of law, who is one of the lawyers of the embattled businessman.

In a press conference, Customs Collector Austria was quoted to have said that the x-ray machine cannot be reopened in its current location —inside the container yard of Reta because it is the view of a former solicitor general that the BOC’s contract with the businessman has been rescinded.

This view of Austria was contradicted by Dean Quibod, Reta’s lawyer, who argued that the Solgen’s opinion is just an opinion and it has no controlling effect because the Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the issue.

Quibod also expressed surprise why Austria is invoking the opinion of former Solgen Francis Jardeleza when past Customs’ commissioners and Davao Customs collectors have not invoked it, knowing that it has no controlling effect.

In a separate statement, Mayor Sara D. Carpio, who heads both the CPOC and City Tourism Council, expressed exasperation over the inaction of Austria on the city government’s urgent request to have the x-ray machine reopened.

“Our point with CPOC is to use the x-ray machine because of the urgency of the security threat,” Mayor Sara told a lady reporter in a text message.

During the recent Cancer Awareness Lay Forum which was held in observance of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical experts from the region have shared to Capitol employees and health professionals, who were participants in the forum, salient information on two of the most common cancers among women – breast cancer and cervical cancer.

Dr. Sharon Lilly Valdez, Regional Cluster Head on Non-Communicable Diseases and Prevention revealed that based on the 2015 data of the Philippine Health Statistics, breast cancer has been ranked as number one cause of cancer deaths among women in the Philippines. In Davao Region, she said, breast cancer still ranks number one in the top causes of mortality among women while cancer in the genital organ which includes cervical cancer ranks second.

She said there is an increasing trend of women getting the disease over the recent years. She listed tobacco use, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, physical inactivity, and harmful use of

cal cancer, explains Dr. Gaye Emerald Oribello, Ob-Gyn Consultant from San Pedro Medical Center. Currently, the Department of Health conducts cancer screening programs readily available for the public in health centers. These diagnostic procedures for cervical cancer are the Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Papanicolaou test commonly known as papsmear. For advanced stages, biopsy is identi�ied as the most reliable diagnostic procedure.

A devastating disease, cancer not only causes physical and mental distress but also leads to deep �inancial exhaustion among patients and their family. In order to save lives, the government is keen at empowering people in terms of prevention through education. Nutritionist Eleonor Burgos underscored that adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle choices, as well as the prevention of stress, are still the most effective measures in preventing cancers. issan Philippines Inc., through its partner Gateway Motors Group, the largest multi-brand car dealership in Cebu, has opened its Nissan Retail Environment Design Initiative (NREDI) concept showroom in Tagum City.

The �irst in Mindanao, the NREDI concept showroom is an upgraded version of dealership, offering visually and technically all aspects, from sales, to service to �inance, to meet consumer expectations.

“This dealership is what we call NREDI dealership, which is a new design that all our dealers in the next two years will implement. anny Pacquiao could be on the verge of retirement, although Bob Arum con�irmed recently that a rematch with Jeff Horn, who defeated the former eight-division world champion by controversial unanimous decision in July, is still a possibility for 2018.

Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KO’s), 38, was slated to �ight Horn in a rematch on Nov. 12 at Suncorp Stadium, but pulled out of the bout due to his senatorial duties in the Philippines. However, some speculated that “Pacman” just didn’t want to �ight in Australia again,

Cagefest highlight DEBC 2nd anniversary

he Davao Engineers Basketball Club (DEBC) celebrated its second anniversary with another tournament held at the Davao City Recreation Center on October 3.

The tournament was staged with the partnershp of DEBC and Davies Paints.

DEBC and Davies Paints continue their partnership which established an innovative, sustainable and integrated city wide programme that promote and increase physical activity, healthy lifestyle and key life skills among Davao City basketball enthusiasts from different sectors of the society.

Previously the group was

known as PDBC, and has been formed to develop a worthwhile and enjoyable skills activity which promote physical growth and headed to the development of a partnership working using sport and active recreation as a common interest thus, produced three basketball league’s with eight teams last year. Due to requests and vigour public demand, the club increased its members forming ten teams this year namely: Felizarta Team, Palban Team, Malnegro Team, Trangia Team, Castillo Team, Barcelo Team, Alcantara Team, Menchavez Team, Villalba Team & Bitangga Team with more than 130 active members and mostly civil en-

gineers.

Highlight during the 2nd DEBC Anniversary was the “All Star Exhibition Games” which was played by two champion teams last year. Team Felizarta members were: Engr/s Atty.
