he volume of crimes committed in Davao City during the period from January to August, 2017 showed a decrease of 36 percent compared to the volume recorded during the same period last year. This was reported by Police Sr. Insp. Ma. Teresita Gaspan, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Ofice (DCPO), who passed on the crimes statistics to members of the AFP/PNP Press Corps of Davao. Gaspan said that the DCPO recorded a total of 5,634 crimes from January
to August, 2017, showing a decrease of 2,019 (36 percent), compared to the 7,653 crime incidents recorded from January to August, 2016. The DCPO spokesperson however clariied that the statistical records she cited pertain to both index crimes and non-index crimes which happened during the periods in review. Index crimes refer to crimes against persons and or property. Crimes against persons involve murder, homicide, physical injury and rape, while crimes against
property refer to such crimes as robbery, theft, carnapping/carjacking and cattle rustling. On the other hand, non-index crimes are violations of special laws such as illegal logging, illegal gambling, illegal drugs and local ordinances. The DCPO recorded a total of 5,726 non-index crimes in 2016, these went down to only 4, 491 cases, or a decrease of 1,235 cases or 22 percent. She said, the noticeable downtrend can be attributed to the implementation of
Oplan Iron City wherein the DCPO implemented maximum deployment of police personnel performing patrol operations in strategic places of convergence as we the enforcers’ “relentless campaign against all forms of criminality with the support of the city’s police auxiliaries and other security forces. “The biggest factor in this achievement is the allout support of the city government of Davao and the general public,” Gaspan said.
