3,000 cops undergo surprise drug tests

T

he spotlight has shifted to the 3,000-member Davao City Police Office after its police director decided to subject his personnel to random drug tests, beginning Thursday morning.

Initial results of the ongoing drug test were not made available to reports as of Thursday afternoon.

DCPO director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum bared that the drug test sought to ensure that the whole city police is free

from the use of illegal drugs.

“We are receiving text messages that are not validated, maybe to ruin our police’s reputation, that is the reason why we are conducting this drug test to validate those reports,” he said.

He said there are about

100 personnel who are being ordered to undergo drug testing to validate the reports the of�ice received.

Tagum said the surprise drug tests being conducted will also discouraged his personnel to use or be involved on illegal drugs.

He said all personnel of all departments of DCPO excluding the police station, have undergone the drug testing yesterday. Tagum said he already ordered all station com-

manders in the city to conduct surprise drug tests to their stations.

He said anyone who will be found positive on the use of illegal drugs will be automatically relived from their of�ice and be investigated. Tagum said during the relief of the personnel, a con�irmatory drug text will be conducted to the personnel who found positive, and if found positive again the police will be dismissed

enate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III on Wednesday said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should resolve the issue on the tons of garbage dumped in the Philippines four years ago before making comments on the human rights issue.

“I think the Canadian Prime Minister should comment on a much relevant issue that Canada needs to answer for,” Sotto said in a press statement.

Taxi driver yields passenger’s wallet

A

taxi driver in Davao City on Thursday returned a wallet containing P5, 000 and five dollars or a total of around P5, 254.42.

Ronel Rubias driver of Shammari Taxi No.1838 discovered that a passenger left the wallet at the backseat of his taxi on Thursday early morning.

The wallet also con-

tained SSS ID and a calling card, identifying the owner as one Eduardo Lindo.

“I didn’t recognize his face but in his wallet there is a calling card that identi�ies the person as working with

the Luzon-based Freight International Logistic INC,” said Rubias. “It is possible that I dropped off this passenger at the airport.”

Rubias said that he did not have any intention to keep the money.

He said the moment he saw the wallet, he immediately went to City Hall to report the lost wallet of his

passenger.

During the Ispeak on Thursday his presence was acknowledged, describing him as an honest taxi driver.

There were no other details about Rubias as to his residence, status and length of service as a taxi driver.

It is also not known if the wallet was returned to Lindo as we go to press.

DLPC: power interruptions up

arts of Davao Del Norte will experience 15-minute power loss on Nov. 17 due to line upgrading works.

Davao Light and Power Co. said the areas included Davao Penal Colony, TADECO up to Tanglaw, Panabo proper. Davao Light has apologized for the inconvenience but gave assurance electric service will be restored once the works are completed.

It said it will exert all efforts to restore electric service as scheduled or earlier. However, there may be instances where restoration may extend beyond the

schedule due to unavoidable circumstances.

Davao Light also assured full service to SM Lanang and SM Ecoland with of�ice hours to be shortened on November 18.

Both establishments will have shorter of�ice hours on Friday, November 17.

Regular of�ice hours, which are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM will resume the next day, November 18.

Inquiries maybe coursed to Davao Light’s Call Center Service at 229-3572 for any power interruption that will fall outside the given indicated schedule.

BCDA, Chinese bank in $4.5-B infra tie up

he Bases Conversion and Development Authority and China Development Bank will establish a cooperation framework to determine the best �inancing option for the USD4.5-billion infrastructure projects under the government-owned and controlled corporation.

This, after BCDA Chairman Gregorio Garcia III and CDB Chairman Hu Huaibang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), witnessed by President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, on Wednesday.

The MOU forges BCDA and CDB to collaborate in determining the most cost effective and ef�icient �inancing option for the GOCC’s projects in Metro Manila and Clark in Central Luzon in the next �ive years.

CDB also intends to partner with quali�ied Chinese enterprises in the form of investments, feasibility studies, independent consultancies, detailed engineering design, equipment procurement and construction, among others to implement the projects.

he Davao City Police Office has assured the wife of the slain PO3 Wilfredo Garol that charges of murder and robbery are being readied against her husband’s assassins once their identities have been established.

he Davao City Water District assured it has not let up in implementing service improvement to ensure a 24/7 water supply in the city.

But DCWD said customers may experience low water pressure to no water during emergency water service interruptions caused by emergency leak repairs and power interruptions affecting DCWD’s facilities.

he Philippine peso remained strong Wednesday but the Philippine Stock Exchange index succumbed to foreign selling as the December meeting of the Federal Reserve nears.

The local currency �inished the day 14 centavos better at 51.04 from 51.18 Tuesday.

It opened the day �lat at 51.20 and traded between 51.02 and 51.23, resulting an average of 51.11.

Volume for the day reached USD566.8 million, up from the USD476.78 million.

PSEi, on the other hand, shed 1.27 percent, or 106.20 points, to 8,273.44 points, which a trader partly traced

to foreign selling.

All the other indices followed, led by the broader All Shares, which ended the day at 4,864.15 points, down 1.01 percent or 49.76 points.

Biggest loser among the sectors during the day is the Mining and Oil after it declined by 2.12 percent followed by the Holding Firms, 1.49 percent; and Property, 1.26 percent.

Financials went down by 0.95 percent; Industrial, 0.82 percent; and Services, 0.38 percent.

Volume for the day reached 1.42 billion amounting to Php5.9 billion.

Bello hopes ASEAN will protect migrant workers

D

epartment of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III is optimistic that the agreement signed by the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on the protection of migrant workers will be observed in the region.

He was referring to the signing of the ASEAN Consensus on the Protection and Promotion of Rights of Migrant Workers on Tuesday at the end of the three-day 31st ASEAN Summit and related summits held in the country.

“Hindi ka naman pipirma (you won’t sign) for the sake of signing, but you will sign with the intention that you will comply with the provision that

you are going to sign,” the DOLE chief said in a television interview.

Bello is hoping that although the accord is not legally binding, countries in the region will follow its provisions, which include allowing migrant workers to join unions and prohibiting employers from con�iscating their workers’ passports.

On Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte announced the signing of the pact.

grew by 6.9% in Q3

Sustained growth attained in 2nd half of 2017

T

he Philippine Statistics Authority revealed that Gross Domestic Product grew by 6.9% in the 3rd Quarter of 2017. This level of economic expansion is well in line with the government’s full-year target of 6.5% to 7.5% GDP growth.

It also sustains the strong growth posted by the Philippine economy, which grew by 6.4% and 6.7% (upward revised as of the most recent data) in the �irst two quar-

ters of the year, respectively.

On the demand side, government spending continued to be a robust driver of growth contributing 0.9 percentage points to growth.

On the supply side, public construction also posted a 12.6% growth rate. The high contribution of government spending can be attributed to the expansionary �iscal policy of the Duterte Administration, particularly to �inance investments in public infrastructure and human capital development.

These included the Financing Agreement on Chico River Pump Irrigation Project and New Centennial Water Source – Kaliwa Dam Project; Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Jointly Promoting the Second Basket of Key Infrastructure Projects Cooperation; and the MOU on Jointly Promoting the Philippine National Railways South Long Haul Project Cooperation.

Under the �inancing agreement, China will provide soft loans estimated at USD 234.92 million for the Kaliwa dam and USD 72.49

million for the Chico River irrigation facility.

The two projects were included under the �irst basket of infrastructure projects presented by the Philippines for possible Chinese �inancing.

Meanwhile, the MOU on the second basket of key infrastructure projects cooperation will jointly identify and study an indicative list of key projects for possible Chinese �inancing.

Among the proposed projects under the second basket are the development of the Subic-Clark Railway, Davao City Expressway, and Panay-Guimaras-Negros Inter-Island Bridge.

PH trade mission leaves for US visit

P

hilippine trade delegation is set to visit the United States at the end of this month to meet their counterparts in the US Trade Representative .

Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo said the Philippines and the US would have a bilateral strategic dialogue this month under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement .

Rodolfo said the Philippines would push its interest for a free trade agreement with the US. The trade talks will come after the Philippines

raised its intention to have an FTA with US during the bilateral meeting of President Rodrigo Duterte and President Donald Trump at the sidelines of the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

Trump has welcomed the interest of the Philippines for a bilateral FTA. Rodolfo added that the Philippines’ interest for FTA is to have better access to US market for its textile and garments industry.

he government is expected to have the capability to become the third major player in the local telco industry once its newly launched broadband infrastructure, which would help improve Internet speed and accessibility in the country, becomes operational by 2019.

The project, dubbed Strategic Engagement and Collaboration to Undertake a Reliable and Ef�icient Government Internet (SECURE GovNet), will build an ultra high-speed information highway that would improve speed, affordability, and accessibility of broadband internet throughout the country.

It will facilitate the implementation of the National Broadband Plan, free public WiFi program, National Government Portal and other

information and communication technology (ICT) projects of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

“This project is an integral part of the National Broadband Plan, which will signi�icantly reduce Internet costs and improve Internet speed. It will ease the implementation of DICT’s connectivity programs, such as the Free Public WiFi where we plan to have around 250,000 sites nationwide and the National Government Portal,” DICT Of�icer in Charge Undersecretary Eliseo Rio said during the signing of the High-Speed Internet Infrastructure Landing Party Agreement with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and Facebook at the Bonifacio Global City Wednesday. “Notwithstanding the continued political noise and the terrorist activity in Marawi, which President Duterte had decisively addressed, the economy managed to perform well in the third quarter as the government posted a double-digit increase in public investments and pursued initiatives to further improve �iscal health and boost investor sentiment,” Dominguez said on Thursday in

response to the 6.9 percent economic expansion over the July-September 2017 period, as announced by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

“Expect a more riveting growth narrative in the fourth quarter and onwards as the Duterte administration shifts to higher gear its unparalleled investment and stimulus program on the strength of the government’s greater absorptive

capacity and its resolve to advance its ‘Build, Build, Build’ infra program as the main driver of the economy,” he said.

Dominguez expressed con�idence that the domestic economy is on track to meet the of�icial full-year expansion target of 6.5-7.5 percent as the government accelerates spending on infrastructure, which has the highest multiplier effect on growth, and on human capital formation, which is essential to achieving economic inclusion for all Filipinos.

He assured the public that “Malacañang would be able to maintain �iscal discipline despite the escalated public spending on the Duterte watch owing to its commitment to provide a steady revenue stream for

its P8.4-trillion ‘Build, Build, Build’ program through Of�icial Development Assistance (ODA) packages and the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN) bill, which the Congress is expected to pass this fourth quarter.”

The admiration of President Duterte’s stewardship of the regional body is not solely of this writer alone. He also earned praises from neighbors in the Asean and from US President Donald Trump. This, despite the controversial stature of the Philippines’ leader before the world on issues regarding alleged human rights violations and the bloody drug war.

It is high time to see the bigger picture. To have a look at the entire forest instead of the trees. President Duterte is coming to fore as a man of vision who knows how to play his cards well in the arena of global diplomacy in his very own way--unorthodox but highly effective.

For yet another time, President Duterte walks away with a tucked grin.

Mayor Sara kept in the dark in the bungling of RA 9003

L

et us face it. The implementers of R.A. 9003 in the city have bungled their jobs with the revelation that leachate, probably laden with heavy metals, has been �lowing to the Matina Pangi river for some time now from the supposed environmental sanitary land�ill in barangay New Carmen.

And this means that for some time now, the leachate has been �lowing to the sea, rendering Mayor Sara’s Bantay Dagat program irrelevant and this city’s clean air act achievement insigni�icant.

It is also possible that for some time now, leachate has been escaping the ESL largely untreated, contaminating the river and the Davao Gulf while concerned agencies looked the other way.

Proof is that Tugbok residents themselves will say that tilapia and other marine life which they used to �ish along the river has long since disappeared when the ESL began to discharge the untreated liquid emanating from mixed wastes, in the manner of water seeking its own level.

Heads should roll in this era of ‘inclusive growth and change.’

Charges should have been �iled

he 1960s, at a time when the dollar-peso exchange rose from 1:2 to 2:4, was a decade to remember. This was the period when your P0.10 was enough to purchase a bottle of softdrink, pay the auto calesa fare, or buy three boxes of Rizal-brand matches.

Cigarettes were bought by packs and rice sold by ganta, the equivalent of more than two kilos.

Cost of rice per ganta was P0.80 while corn per ganta.

Marlboro 20s cigarettes in �liptops cost P0.60 a pack, while the longer ones in soft packs could be bought for P0.80 a pack. Other equally popular smoker’s choices were Chester�ield, Camel, Stuyvesant, Parrot, Bataan, Balintawak, and Philip Morris.

The then famous repacked Vergara vetsin (monosodium glutamate or MSG) was �ive packets for P0.10. Early morning coffee was the repacked Good Morning found in nearly every home; it cost P0.10 for �ive packets.

The most popular rubber shoe at that time was the Elpo, a brand that competed with another equally popular shoe name, Marcelo.

Only few know what the name stands for; actually, it’s short for El Porvenir Rubber Products, Inc., the shoe manufacturer. Among the leather shoes, everybody was

It is a big let-down for a city that is regarded by most LGUs as the template of good governance: peace and order, Clean Air Act implementation, Anti-Smoking, Organic Agriculture Act, speed Limit among other innovative ordinances or policies.

This is not to say that Davao City is alone in so far as the bungling of RA 9003 is concerned. Imperial Metro Manila has been the �irst to abuse its ESL in San Mateo, Rizal by turning it into an open dump as it did Payatas since when Mayor Jejomar Binay headed the MMDA in the 1990s.

In Bicol, the open dumps have been the eyesores that were negating the attraction of Mt. Mayon. In

Baguio City, after it was forced by a Writ of Kalikasan to close its Irisan dump site, City Hall has deemed best to ship its garbage to the lowlands, in the manner of a resident sweeping his dirt towards somebody’s backyard.

But considering that Davao City is being looked up to as an LGU model in more ways than one, I believe Mayor Sara should take this opportunity to show how it can be done correctly once for all.

The ESL in Tugbok, for all in-

tents and purpose, can no longer be saved, considering the mixed wastes that it has accumulated. But the leachate that is squeezed from overloading can still be treated before more harm is done.

The allocation of another P100 million to purchase land for another ESL site strikes me as a sensible move. But having committed itself, the city government under Mayor Sara should now do it right by complying with what the law requires: segregation at source, re-cyle, reuse, compost---with only the residuals to be trucked to the ESL. The bulk of the garbage which is 60% biodegradable should be composted at the barangay level, with the city providing the �inancial support as incentives for barangays to segregate at source. Some rural areas in Japan are doing this and to our credit as Filipinos, we have some barangays (in northern Luzon) implementing this over the past 10 years at their own level.

The ESL, for all intents and purposes, is perfect for Davao City that is still primarily agricultural or rural. It is perfect complement to many pro-environment laws this city has enacted. Hand in hand with

composting, it can prove effective in alleviating climate change and (together with waste segregation) in producing the organic fertilizer that can sustain food production. It is a sharp contrast to the open dump that produces leachate and dangerous gases as proven in Payatas and elsewhere.

Mayor Sara herself has elicited praises for thumbing down a P40-Billion Davao coastline and development project because of the possible harm it would in�lict on the environment. This cemented her reputation as one who would do to ride the river with in protecting the environment.

A properly managed ESL is her best legacy to this city, in the process providing the catalyst that has so far escaped the Philippine landscape on a municipal or city level. It offers a window of opportunity in making whole the attraction of this city as a community of law-abiding, peace-loving, innovative and enterprising people.

Mayor Sara owes it to the pioneering spirit of those that developed Davao from a former swampland into what it is now--- to lead the way.

But it was in the tin pan alley, i.e., the music scene, that a kind of revolution erupted.

In Visayan charts, names like Pilita Corrales (Rosas Pandan), Elizabeth Ramsay (Waray, Waray), Jimmy Salazar (Inday, Pinangga Ko Ikaw), Al Comendador (Pangandoy). Before Yoyoy Villame and Max Surban took over the airlanes by storm, Salazar was unassailably the king of Visayan novelty songs, his naughty lyrics were the favorite of early risers.

Meanwhile, the jukebox churned out popular Tagalog hits sang by Eddie Peregrina (My Pledge of Love), Helen Gamboa (Together Again), Vilma Santos (Sweet Sixteen), Manny de Leon (Dear Someone), Eddie Peregrina (Mardy), Edgar Mortiz (My Pledge of Love), Tirso Cruz III (Maria Leonora Teresa), and Nora Aunor (Help Yourself), to name a few.

Taking the Philippine music world were foreign singers whose songs remain the center for nostalgia among senior citizens. Who would have forgotten the musical icons like the Papas and the Mamas, Celia Black, Lulu, Connie Francis, Beatles, Cliff Richard, Pointer Sisters, The Hollies, Righteous Brothers, The Everly Brothers, Isaac Hayes, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como,

Sue Thompson, Brazil 66, Commodores, and Elvis Presley?

Ask any car enthusiast, chances are he will tell you the best cars, not the muscle type, were also from that era: Road Runner, Camaro, and Mustang. Joining the list of models are the Ford Falcon, Chevrolet Corvair, Plymouth Valiant, Lincoln-Mercury, Comet and Dart.

And then there was Buick Special, Oldsmobile F-85, Pontiac Tempest, Rambler American, Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, Chevy Corvair, Chrysler, Pontiac Tempest, Oldsmobile Toronado, Lincoln-Mercury Cougar, and Barracuda.

Many of the styles popularized during that era were copycats from Hollywood fashions, as if we were not yet drowned in being heavily westernized.

A shining shimmering THE CHRISTMAS SEASON is definitely in high gear as SM Supermalls in Mindanao held their ceremonial mall lighting ceremonies last week.

The annual spectacles started last November 8 with SM Lanang Premier taking Dabawenyos on a whirl of wonder with a grand 58-foot tall Christmas Tree taking over the atrium of the mall.

COMICS RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY ALTHOUGH “COMICS” ARE AS INDEFINABLE AS LITERATURE and film as a medium, it has nevertheless been a staple for expressing information throughout our society’s history. This should come as no surprise to anyone, since creating a set of comics is the easiest, most unique and fun way of producing personalized art— even if it is done with just stick figures.

From official newspaper editorials to your child’s crayon-filled notebook full of doodles and weird characters, comics have some underlying and psychologically important ideas to communicate— it’s just done in the most seemingly unimportant and hilariously entertaining kind of way. And with the advancement of digital technology and today’s “Millennial Fever”, it is not long before scrolling through your social media page and you’ll come across different cartoon/ illustrations that serve as a mini-break from celebrity gossip or your friend’s selfie feeds.

With today’s trend of comics (with the exception of the more traditional “Marvel” kind or graphic novels) practically serve as a visual journal of the artist, that pause will most probably deliver you themes like existential crises, dealing with anxiety, and/or awesome puns.

Because as we all know or noticed ste-

reotypically, if traditional artists are to “tortured souls”, then illustrators/ cartoonists are to being “adorkable” and “quirky”—if today’s digital art strip is a genre or a person, it could be basically called: “Zooey Deschanel.” Although the informal characteristics of illustrations and comics give them the impression of being non-Metropolitan Museum of Art-worthy, they are in every shape and form a legitimate piece of art and are even capable of eliciting specific types of emotions at glance—with or without dialogue.

If like me, you enjoy hours of “LOLing” (a.k.a. short bursts of air through the nose) by stalking through the Instagram accounts of witty comic artists like, Sar-

ah Andersen (@sarahandersencomics), Adam Ellis (@adamtots) Gemma Correll (@gemmacorrell), and Loryn Brantz (@lorynbrantz) to name a few, then I am sure you will find Xiao Prieto’s comic illustrations gleefully endearing, especially since she features familiar places and even faces that we all Dabawenyos can relate to.

“I decided to join an art club but soon realized it was not for me, since the artworks I see there are very similar: mountains, rice fields, or trees, etc. It wasn’t

until sixth grade when my classmate showed me her older brother’s drawings—it was a notebook filled with Sailor Moon artworks. That was the first time my interest in art sparked. I started buying Sailor Moon text cards and bought myself a drawing notebook. I filled it up with drawings copied from cards and I haven’t stopped honing my skill since,” the artist shares.

Xiao eventually fell in love with her first graphics tablet and was heavily influenced by the “deviantart” online community. “If you share your experience with riding a jeepney, it is different when you show it through drawing than by just telling someone. Art adds flavor to my everyday life and has helped me channel my emotions to a more creative pursuit.

One of them has already been materialized: “Alleycat”.

I wanted to have a cafe of my own where creatives and like-minded people can meet, and where local artists are being supported through our events like “Print Ta!”. Another long-term goal of mine is to be able to produce enough quality content to be able to publish a book. I have this idea of a graphic memoir showing drawings of different districts/places in Davao City—its means of transportation, food, and the locals. Koronadal gives incentives for organic farm produce Z

he city government of Koronadal South Cotabato has increased its incentives for organic farm products in a bid to encourage more local farmers to practice and venture into organic farming.

Emelita Miguel, city agriculture of�icer, said Wednesday organic producers in the city may now receive cash incentives of as high as P10 per kilo for validated produce reaching the local markets.

She said they offer an incentive of P3 a kilo for organic rice and P10 per

kilo for vegetable products, except for squash and cucumber that are set at P2 a kilo.

Producers of organic chickens will get P10 a kilo and P5 per kilo for organic eggs as incentives, she said.

This includes organic pork meat products, which City Mayor Peter Miguel had promised to provide an incentive of P20 a kilo.

“Our goal is to develop more organic farming practitioners and further expand our organic farms,” she said.

Since the program started about �ive years ago, around 200 organic farming practitioners in the city’s 27 barangays al-

ready received cash incentives, initially offered at P2 a kilo for organic rice, from the local government.

Earlier this month, 13 farmers received cash incentives ranging from P3,000 to 16,000 for their organic produce.

Around 100 farmers are currently growing organic rice, vegetables and into swine farming that covers over 50 hectares of farmlands.

The road train, which arrived here late last month following a six-month test run in Cebu City, will cover a total of 17 stops along the national highway from Barangay Tinagacan to the city �ishport complex in Barangay Tambler.

It will take off at 4 a.m. in front of the Tinagacan Elementary School and will mainly cater to teachers, �ishport and tuna canning workers in four round trips daily, with two in the morning and two in the afternoon.

AMBOANGA CITY -- Indonesian and Malaysian troops covered by the Trilateral Cooperative Agreement (TCA) on Wednesday ended their three-day port visit in the province of Tawi-Tawi.

Brig. Gen. Custodio Parcon, Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi commander, said the visiting forces from the two countries aboard Navy frigates arrived on Monday at the Naval Station Juan Magluyan in Barangay Batu-Batu, Panglima Sugala municipality.

Parcon said the delegate of the Royal Malaysian Navy is headed by Capt. Zahari Bin Samsuri and the Tentara Nacional Indonesia headed by Col. Nanan Isnandar.

They were welcomed by the men and women of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi.

Parcon said the visiting Indonesian and Malaysian forces have engaged in series of activities in their three-day port visit from Monday until Wednesday.

cardinal from Mindanao has condemned the Oct. 9 desecration of a chapel in Barangay Labo-Labo, Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao, the second attack on a Catholic place of worship by unidenti�ied men in Maguindanao and North Cotabato provinces this year.

In a statement, His Eminence Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, OMI, DD, grieved on how unidenti�ied men set ablaze the chapel and “maliciously” destroyed religious statues.

“This criminal act is an

abhorrent desecration of a place of Catholic worship,” Quevedo, the country’s second cardinal, said.

Why do we dream?

ll men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible” – T. E. Lawrence

“When Jacob reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.”

As chronicled in Genesis 28:11-12, we can surmise the dreaming has been with us since time immemorial.

Greek philosopher Socrates looked on them as representatives of the voice of conscience. French historian Voltaire dismissed them as random products of physical indispositions. Sigmund Freud called them “the royal road to the unconscious.However one feels about dreams, they are an enduring source of fascination. “Dreams are true while they last,” penned British poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. “Dreams are a way for the subconscious to communicate with the conscious mind,” writes Michael J. Weiss in an article which appeared in Reader’s Digest.

What most people don’t know that we dream when we sleep – between 3-6 times per night, according to studies.

Each dream lasts between 5 to 20 minutes. “Around 95% of dreams are forgotten by the time a person gets out of bed,” wrote Hannah Nichols in an article published in the website of Medical News Today (MNT).

Although science has made a great progress since Biblical times, the answer of why we dream is still elusive as ever. “The question is easy to ask but very dif�icult to answer,” admits Dr. Ernest Hartmann, a professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and the director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Newton Wellesley Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

“The most honest answer is that we do not know yet the function or functions of dreaming,” Dr. Hartmann told Scienti�ic American. “This ignorance should not be surprising because despite many theories we still do not fully understand the purpose of sleep, nor do we know the functions of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is when most dreaming occurs.”

There are �ive phases of sleep, according to the MNT feature. In Stage 1, described as light sleep, our eyes move slowly and the muscle activity slows; it forms 4-5% of total sleep.

Stage 2 takes place when eye movement stops and brain waves (�luctuations of electrical activity that can be measured by electrodes) become slower, with occasional bursts of rapid waves called sleep spindles. This stage forms 45-55% of total sleep.

When extremely slow brain waves called delta waves begin to appear, interspersed with smaller, faster waves, stage 3 starts. It takes about 4-6% of total sleep. Stage 4, which forms 12-15% of total sleep, happens when the brain produces delta waves almost exclusively. It is very dif�icult to wake a person during stages 3 and 4, which together are called “deep sleep.”

It’s when someone undergoes stage 5 or REM that dreams occur. In this stage, breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow, eyes jerk rapidly in various directions, and limb muscles become temporarily paralyzed.

Heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, and males develop penile erections.

“When people awaken during REM sleep, they often describe bizarre and illogical tales – dreams,” wrote Nichols of the stage which forms 2025% of total sleep time.

Although science cannot gives us the exact reason on

why we dream, several theories are being explored. In an article published in Psychology Today, Dr. Michael J. Breus listed several theories about dreaming that are currently being studied: · A component and form of memory processing, aiding in the consolidation of learning and short-term memory to long-term memory storage. · An extension of waking consciousness, re�lecting the experiences of waking life. · A means by which the mind works through dif�icult, complicated, unsettling thoughts, emotions, and experiences, to achieve psychological and emotional balance. · The brain responding to biochemical changes and electrical impulses that occur during sleep. · A form of consciousness that unites past, present and future in processing information from the �irst two, and preparing for the third. · A protective act by the brain to prepare itself to face threats, dangers and challenges.

“There is not likely ever to be simple answer, or a single theory that explains the full role of dreaming to human life,” Dr. Breus surmised. “Biological, cognitive, psychological – it’s very likely that dreaming may serve important functions in each of these realms.”

Recent studies have shown that dreams are often distorted re�lections of our daily lives – not necessarily symbolic pictures of unconscious wishes, as Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud believed, or random, nonsense images caused by brain signals.

Many sleep experts now believe our dreams are so related to our waking lives.

Ask Stephen King, American author of nightmare-inducing horror novels. In an interview, he told writer Naomi Epel:

“ W h a teve r ’ s going on in our daily lives trickles down and has some sort of in�luence down there (meaning dream).”

After research carried out two decades at the Washington State University, investigators concluded that dreams fall into three categories, namely: “tension dreamers,” “social dreamers,” and “reward dreamers.”

“Tension dreamers,” researchers say, were people who re�lected anxiety, hostility, or frustration, hypochondriacs who could not concentrate on their work. “Social dreamers,” on the other hand, always dreamt of pleasant relationships with other people: having good times at parties, always getting the best and always being the center of attraction. Researchers reckoned that such dreams were compensation for the people concerned who, in real life, were invariably shy and retiring.

In the third category, “reward dreamers” are those having visions of winning the lottery, getting an acting award or a recognition from his or her peers. According to the researchers, people who have this kind of dream are self-con�ident individuals with dominant personalities.

Their dreams simply complemented their actual living characters.

The nature of dream activity has been characterized by many clinical and laboratory studies around the world. “These studies show that dreams are more perceptual than conceptual,” says Dr. Hartmann. “Things are seen and heard rather than being subjected to thought.”

In terms of the senses, visual experience is present in almost all dreams; auditory experience in 40-50%; and touch, taste, smell, and pain in a relatively small percentage. A considerable amount of emotion is commonly present – usually a single, stark emotion such as fear, anger, or joy rather than the modulated emotions that occur in the waking state.

According to Weiss, dream emotions can help real therapists treat patients undergoing traumatic life events.

In a study of 30 recently divorced adults, Dr. Rosalind Cartwright tracked their dreams over a �ive-month period, measuring their feelings towards their ex-spouses. She discovered that those who were angriest at the spouse while dreaming had the best chance of successfully coping with divorce.

“If their dreams were bland,” pointed out Dr. Cart-

wright, chairman of the psychology department at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, “they hadn’t started to work through their emotions and deal with the divorced.”

Men and women differ genetically – and even when it comes to dreaming. “It’s biology and social conditioning,” explains the director of Bethesda Oak Hospital’s Sleep Center in Cincinnati, Ohio of the difference.

In a study of 1,000 dreams, half from each sex, Robert Van de Castle, author of Our Dreaming Mind, found that men more often have action-oriented dreams involving strangers, identi�ied mostly by their occupation. Usually these dreams are set outdoors or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Women, on the other hand, dream more of emotional one-on-one struggles with loved ones (husband or children), usually in indoor settings.

Unknowingly, dreams affect our attitudes. Studies

by University of Pennsylvania professor emeritus Aaron Beck show that angry people act out their anger in their dreams. Other research shows that depressed people sometimes dream they’re victims of rejection, humiliation or abandonment. People with “thin boundaries” – unusual openness, vulnerability, dif�iculty standing up for themselves – are likely to suffer from nightmares.

Creative people often harness their dreams to solve problems. According to author Epel, when some writers, artists or scientists go to sleep, they ask their subconscious for a dream that will help them with unresolved issues. “Your unconscious knows things your conscious doesn’t,” Epel says. “It can be an ally with new insights.”

“Dreams are the touchstones of our characters,” wrote philosopher and naturalist Henry David Thoreau.

In one of his writings, he explained: “I have learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances con�idently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Yes, dreams do come true.

The Book of Lists scanned the yellow pages of history and came up with a list of people who put their dreams to work. One of them was British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. History’s most celebrated episode of dream inspiration occurred on an English summer day in 1797, when the young poet dozed off while reading a history book about Kublai Khan.

An opium addict, Coleridge was probably in a pleasantly drugged state when the immortal verses came to him.

Waking up, Coleridge began to write feverishly. He had reached the �ifty-fourth line – one-sixth of the poem as he envisioned it – when the infamous “person on business from Porlock” interrupted him. An hour later, when his visitor had left, he had forgotten the rest of the poem.

Another case was that of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. He read entire imaginary books in his sleep and traveled to distant places, but most important, he received visits from what he called his “little people.” They dictated stories to him, “piece by piece, like a serial,” especially when he needed money.

Sometimes, Stevenson dreamed stories without their help. According to his wife, Fanny, “In the small hours of one morning, I was awakened by cries of horror from Louis.

Thinking he had a nightmare, I awakened him. He said angrily, ‘Why did you wake me?

I was dreaming a �ine bogey tale.’” The bogey tale turned out to be the classic, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Can our dreams foretell the future? In some instances, they can! In the weeks prior to his assassination, Abraham Lincoln reportedly dreamed he heard people sobbing, and wandered downstairs to �ind out what was going on. In the East Room, he saw a cof�in and a corpse whose face was covered.

“Who is dead in the White House?” Lincoln asked a soldier standing nearby. “The President,” the soldier answered. “He was killed by an assassin.”

Denson Franklin declared: “When you let your dreams die, something dies within you.”

Homeboy Conlan ready to upstage Davao’s Ancajas G OING in as the underdog on Saturday night will make becoming world super-�lyweight champion even sweeter for Jamie Conlan.

Crowd favourite Conlan takes on IBF champion Jerwin Ancajas at the SSE Arena as a 9/2 outsider on home turf while the Filipino is a 1/8 sure-thing to make the third defence of his title.

Unbeaten Conlan (19-0) is well worth a punt at those odds and is determined to make his dream come true by dethroning the Manny Pacquaio protégé on the chief support (10.15pm) to Carl Frampton’s long-awaited ring comeback.

“It makes it even better that I’m the underdog,” says Conlan.

“There’s zero pressure on me. I’m a big underdog, the bookies don’t expect me to win and people have me beaten already but they don’t want to say it.

“This �ight can be go one of two ways – it can be a complete chess match or it can be an all-out brawl. I’ve prepared for both in camp, you have to cover all the bases and we’ve done that.

“He’s a quality operator, he’s world champion for a reason and he’s very, very good in every department.

He doesn’t make many mistakes but we’ve gone over and over him and we’ve devised a plan to get round him.”
